Fantasy Sports w/Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello there and welcome to another fantasy sports chat! I am Eric, you have questions, so let's get right to it...

Jeff (Seattle)

I was offered Westbrook for Adrian Peterson? Who would you rather have?

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

Wow, these are the two best players in fantasy right now. Honesty, if I was drafting today, LT would be third. I think I would go with Peterson first overall. And the Minnesota QB change today to Gus Frerotte actually helps him.

amanda (nassau)

Tristan h Cockcroft is very high on jay cutler- he said in the morning chat that he would sit McNabb and start Jay cutler this week. what do you think about sitting romo vs GB D for cutler facing NO D ? Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

Tristan is a wise man! The ESPN Fantasy rankings are up and I have to say, the way Cutler is playing we all would play him over McNabb. I ranked Cutler No. 1 at QB this week. McNabb has a tougher game. I put Romo second.

Rob (Santa Monica)

Will you take a Hoops question? I was going to hold Gilbert Arenas over Carmelo. Should I rethink that with Gilbert's latest knee issues?

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

Yes. Man, I am so tired of Agent Zero and not only his injury problems, but his attitude. In our hoops draft kit I ranked Arenas 16th, the worst of the four rankers on staff. Now he's out of my top 25, easy. Maybe my top 50. I don't want to deal with another season like this again. Carmelo is 25th for me. So yes, Melo over Zero.

Marc (Toronto, Canada)

Why are you so down on Wayne this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

I wouldn't say that. I ranked him seventh at WR. That's good, isn't it? Only 6 WRs better! I don't know why nobody is worried about the way the Colts have (or have not) moved the ball so far. Addai looks awful. Manning hasn't been good. And the Jags have a beaten up o-line. The defense is fine.

Tim (Towson)

What's more valuable, a solid RB4 or a solid WR starter?

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

Trick question! I have to say the starter, but of course RB depth is vital. Both are valuable, but you can win with 2 really good WRs.

Steve (NY)

Should I rethink dropping Berrian for my Week 4 bye week Def now that Gus is QB or should he be dropped regardless?

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

Wow, people are already looking ahead to Week 4 byes. Good job! I thought Berrian would have a good season, and now that Frerotte is the QB, he should improve. I would not drop him yet.

Whats up with the #24 ranking of MJD this week? Colts run D is soft and it just got softer with the loss of Sanders.

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

All true, but the Jags o-line is still a mess. I don't trust any Jags on offense yet. I really think this Colts-Jags game is like 10-6 or something like that. Be careful here.

kosh (Y-town, Ohio)

alright eric, gotta very tight match-up against another team thats 2-0 in my division, so i need a win. Who do u go with Kitna coming off that 2 td 3 Int perfomance or Delhomme getting S. Smith back

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

I go with Kitna, easily. I have him in the top 10, and Delhomme well behind. I do like Smith returning, but Kitna is an underrated fantasy option.

Rob (CLE, OH)

Who do you like this week, Favre or Cassell?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

Can you believe this question is actually a reasonable one? I knew Cassel would play well, and now I think we shall see some better stats. I have Cassel at 11 this week, and Favre at 12. So there!

Aaron (NY)

Am I actually going to sit Braylon Edwards for Justin Gage this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

That I wouldn't do, but I don't like the Edwards matchup or that entire Cleveland team.

Xavier (Seattle)

EK! Trying to optimize the bench - Drop Ray Rice for S Morris, M Bush, L Jordan, D Ward or Hightower? Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

All could be interesting this season. We still don't know yet about Fargas, and if he is out then Bush would be behind only a rookie. I still think for now Morris is the guy in New England. McGahee is back and ready to go, so Rice has little value.

Mark (State College)

Should I be worried about Shockey? He was supposed to improve with Colston being out, right?

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

Well I didn't rank him any better, but a lot of other people expected him to suddenly become Antonio Gates apparently. Shockey is overrated. Still borderline top 10 TE, but nothing special no matter who his teammates are.

Travis (Annapolis, MD)

Need your help Eric. I'm worried that you're down on Addai because I'm trying to trade for Addai, in exchange for DeSean Jackson and Julius Jones. What do you think?

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

I think that's a reasonable trade, but buying low on Addai might not be applicable if he continues to struggle and share carries. In retrospect, the way he looks, he should not have been top 5 overall. And J.Jones will get a lot of carries, but let's not go overboard.

Bob (Madison, WI)

I noticed your rankings of Marc Bulger are way above everyone elses. Why so confident in the lowly Rams?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

Yeah, I found that odd as well. I don't really like him, but there are a number of QBs I wanted to move down and not play, like Palmer, Derek Anderson and Hasselbeck. So it's kind of faint praise. Plus, Rams-Seahawks could be a shootout since each team is bad.

Joey (Boston, MA)

Eric, I'm 0-2 out of the gates and I need a win this week. I have Gore as my #1 rb, but who would you start as my #2: Jonathan Stewart or Jamal Lewis?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

Joey, you could be 0-2 or 2-0. Nobody ever wants to lose! I have Lewis rated a bit better than Stewart. He's not sharing carries. Stewart still is. And Gore will have a big week!

Kevin, Aurora, IL

Eddie Royal or Chad Johnson...Holt burned Giants deep can Johnson do the same or too big of risk?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

It's Ocho boy, definitely. People don't realize why Royal was able to go off in Week 1. Last week until the final minute he had all of three fantasy points. I probably ranked him too well this week as it was.

Brian (Wake Forest)

Wow, that's sad ... Eddie Royal or Chad Johnson actually being a close call. Isn't this the DEFINITION of "buying low"? I mean, if you could get Chad Johnson for Eddie Royal, that'd be the steal of the century, right?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Mike (NY)

Why do you keep taking so many questions that people could answer for themselves if they just looked at your Week 3 rankings? It's frustrating, and a complete waste of everyone's time.

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

I'm looking for other questions, really I am!

Jen, DeLand Fl

I offered Bolden for M.Lynch, he has Warner. Fair? He countered with Felix Jones. Bad etiquette?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

Not really, but if you don't like the counter, either counter again or walk away. I think Boldin will have a monster year. I think Lynch will be very good as well. Jones has talent, but he's a backup at this point.

Jason (St Louis)

Pick a side: Randy Moss and Jamal Lewis or Andre Johnson and Reggie Bush.

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

Wow, normally I wouldn't hesitate to take the Moss/Lewis side, but ... OK, I still have to, but I don't feel as sure about it. Isn't it amazing in one week all the safe feelings about Moss have changed, and now people like Welker? People, both will be fine. Cassel will be fine.

Matt (Villanova, Pa)

For the rest of the season Aaron Rodgers is a top _______ quarterback

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

Packers. OK, what you probably mean is a number. I can see him being a top 10 QB, kind of where the preseason ranking of Derek Anderson was. Rodgers looks legit, though he can't play Detroit every week.

Eric (FL)

Baseball question! In a keeper league with no keeper restrictions, when one or more owners accumulates a monster set of keepers and consistently wins with them, if you are one of the other teams in the league, do you still keep players conservatively (most consistent and durable) or is it better to take some risks (keeping a Mat Gamel and/or Yovani Gallardo) to try and buck the trend? Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

I would take a risk or two, but not with a Gamel type. I'd want to be sure he's going to play every day and emerge. Keeper leagues can still be won in the draft, and by trades, even if a team has great keepers and you do not.

Kevin (Deep in the heart of Texas)

Baseball Question...I'm in the playoffs and I have to cut one of these OFs.. Which 3 would you take during the playoffs? Pat Burrell, Phi Shin-Soo Choo, Cle Elijah Dukes, Was Lastings Milledge, Was

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

Tough one. I don't think I would cut Burrell yet, and his is the one name struggling. Maybe Dukes. At least Milledge runs.

Bo (Boston)

Ok, what do you make of Delhomme for the rest of the year. Last year was going gangbusters until he got hurt and it seems like he's fully recovered from Tommy John surgery PLUS he has the distinct advantage of being the QB who gets to throw to Steve Smith. Would you be at all suprised if he cracks the top 10 in fantasy points at the end of the year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

Sounds legit to me. But let's not try to learn anything from last season. It was a few games. If those were tougher matchups, that shouldn't matter either. I think Delhomme won't end up top 10, but he will be useful.

Kyle (Los Angeles)

Care to commment on why you have SF DEF ranked so high? Especially if you think Jax/Indy will be a 10-6 type game.

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

I look for potential turnovers, and clearly I have been ranking defenses different than the others, which is fine. Kitna turns the ball over. And the SF D has been OK so far, underrated.

Zack (Albany, NY)

How would you feel about your team if you were playing matchups with Cassel and Edwards for the rest of the year? And true or false, Jay Cutler finishes the year as the top-ranked QB.

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

I would like to improve on Edwards for the duration of the season, that's for sure. Cassel isn't a lock for stardom, but could be a decent starter. And I say no on Cutler, but I do think he ends up top 5. Right now my top QB for the 2008 season would be Romo.

Sean (Atlanta, Ga)

I was wondering if i should accept this trade: Braylon Edwards for DeSean Jackson, I have Desean Jackson.

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

Yeah, I would make that deal 10 times outta 10. I'm an Eagles fan, and DeSean's level of cockiness is starting to get annoying. He's good, but due to come back to earth soon.

Anthony (Philly)

Why does Matt Forte keep getting no love in the rankings? Is it just that he's sitll unproven?

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

I ranked him 15th, so I think that's pretty good. He's not a RB1 really, not yet, and he is still a rookie you know.

Quincy (Cemetery, ND)

Can I drop Maroney now? I'm so sick of him.

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

It's your team, if dropping him makes you happy, good for you. I wouldn't cut him yet, but I do have serious doubts the Pats want to ever give him 20 carries or something near a goal line.

Geoff (Newport Beach, CA)

Eric, I was looking at the composite WR rankings and noticed that Steve Smith was nowhere to be found. Then I noticed that you ranked him 36th, while your colleagues all had him at 12 or 13. What gives?

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

I should have ranked him better, but I don't merely place players where I think they should go. Smith will be moved up by me later in the week, but not to 12 or 13. The Vikings did a great job with Peyton Manning, I think they can defend Delhomme as well.

Bryan (Seattle)

You have Brees as #3 QB this week but Patten as his top WR at #40. Do you really think Brees can live on Bush alone for his points?

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

I think he can spread the ball around enough. The Saints have WR depth, but fantasy owners will never know which week if it will be Patten or Devery or Meachem. The QB and the WR don't always go hand in hand, in fact they seldom do.

Ben NY

Im confused, You guys have Willie Parker listed as the number #9 back this week but the projection have him earning 4 pts, which one should i go by? Thank Eric

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

I didn't look at our projections when I ranked players. Someone else did the projections. I trust Parker, and have all offseason. I ended up with Parker and Turner on a bunch of teams.

Tim (Towson)

Hey Eric, do you think it's ever a good idea to cycle tight ends in and out like defenses? You know, play the match-ups?

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

If you don't have one of the good ones, sure. I generally do not do this until the playoffs, because in a smart league with wise owners, everyone wants the same ones.

Dave (LA)

What do you think of this season of Entourage so far?

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

Terrific show. Love it.

Ryan (Dover)

Marques Colston vs. Dwayne Bowe - who'd you rather have on your team for the rest of the year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

Colston. Should be back in two weeks.

Keith (Danbury CT)

I'm tryin to unload Sproles on an LT owner... Colston a good target to go for?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

Yes, very nice. Smart move. Sproles had a huge game, but there's no guarantee that will happen if, say LT sits this week. I'll view Colston the way I do Steve Smith this week. Cautious for a week, then I'm all in.

Matt (Dallas)

C'mon, Eric, round out the top 5 at QB behind Romo!

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

OK, why not? Romo first, then Manning, Cutler, McNabb and Brees. I could see that.

Dan (PA)

Flip side of the Sproles question: I'm an LT owner; is offering Sammy Morris for Sproles too much?

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

No, I don't think so. But here's the thing if you own LT: Would Sproles be a sure fire play? Do you have better RBs? Handcuffing in this case is wise, but not a necessity.

George (Florida)

Is Holt a starter based on match-ups only?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

I did downgrade him a bit this week, but he's still Torry Holt. He's not a matchups guy yet, he's still a starter, a top 20 WR. I think the panic on Holt and Steven Jackson is premature.

Brick (Mass)

Yeah, I have Romo as my starter and drafted Jay Cutler as a backup for when Romo had a bye...but I did not expect this should I do with Cutler?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

Well, now seems like a really smart time to see what you can get for Cutler, while he's the No. 1 scorer in fantasy. You should go for a top 5 RB or WR. Romo is safe, and with Manning looking old, the best QB in our game.

Justin (Islip, NY)

EK, Why dont u & keith Lipscomb have ur own podcast? you guys had a great chemistry in the EA Madden podcasts

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

Totally agree. We don't make the rules!

Jim (Detroit, MI)

Eric, please address this ridiculous trade that was accepted in my league: Team A gets Gates and Portis. Team B gets Fasano and Rhodes. Am I right to call Balderdash?

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

I think you know the answer.

Eric (Boston, MA)

Thoughts on Larry Johnson? 70+ yds v. the Pats wasn't terrible, but 22 v. Oak was? Should I panick if I own him? KC seems to have an easy schedule.

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

Can't give up on someone with that much upside yet. LJ just needs to whine sometimes to get the touches he wants. I still see a 1,200-yard season for him.

Steve (KY)

Basketball keeper question, Eric! I've got King James and Deron Williams protected, of course, but do you think I should hold onto Rudy Gay or get a 3rd round pick? Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Keep Rudy. General rule is where would you need to draft someone to get him back, and Rudy is worth that pick. I ranked him in the top 20.

shawn (cincy)

To early to panic on LT? Looking a lot like Shaun Alexanders downward trend.

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

No, I do not agree. Not yet. LT will still be good, he's just dealing with a bad toe. First week he nearly hit 100 yards. By the way, I would not be shocked if Alexander signs with the Lions or Bengals. And soon.

Adrian (Libertyville IL)

They are saying 3 more weeks on Colston. Worth picking up and waiting or wait until the last minute to grab?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Get him now. Don't let someone else beat you to him.

Chris (Tampa)

Hello Eric. One word answer is fine - Graham or Forte the rest of the way?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Graham, barely. Might change my mind in a week or two though.

Paul T. (Cincinnati)

Brett Favre on MNF or his replacement on SNF? Which do you see having the bigger game?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Rodgers this week. Both are worthy starters now.

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

OK, looks like our time is up. Thanks for the questions and best of luck in Week 3 of the season... thanks
