Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (1:01 PM)

Matty Dubb here to some serious chatting today. We can discuss anything you want. Let's get rolling.

Mike (Boca Raton)

I don't mean this sarcastically, but why would anyone want to coach the raiders?

Matt Williamson
  (1:02 PM)

I can't think of any good reason whatsoever. None.

Jimmy NH

Matt, what is the deal with Shockey in NO? Is he not getting thrown to?

Matt Williamson
  (1:03 PM)

That entire passing game/offense was in a funk last week. I think it was an adjustment period to not having Colston-which is certainly somewhat worrisome. Remember, although he was somewhat quiet about it Colston caught a TON of balls in his first two years in this league. His absence will take some getting used to and I am also not sold that Shockey is 100% or 100% in tune yet with this O. It will come.

Dave (Denver)

How surprising the O-Line in Denver?

Matt Williamson
  (1:04 PM)

Rather surprising, but having all those weapons and Shanny's running scheme helps them perform better than many expect. Still, that is a good point. A weakness a year ago looks like a strength. Clady is for real at LT.

Karl (Chicago)

Matt, can Brandon Jackson become the featured back for the Packers if Grant continues to struggle with the hammy injury?

Matt Williamson
  (1:06 PM)

I believe so. Before last year-his rookie season-most expected Jackson to be the #1 guy. He took a little while to adjust to the game at this level, but looks like everything he was cracked up to be-and probably more-as a 2nd round pick coming out of Nebraska.

Ricky (San Antonio)

Its early, bu with Brady out and Peyton struggling, does this open the door for Romo to be league MVP?

Matt Williamson
  (1:07 PM)

Great QB on the best team in the league. Good recipe for MVP in my book. There will be a ton of great candidates as usual, but Romo has to be on top of the list right now.

Chad (Cascade, MD)

When will troy smith be back? how big of an impact can he be?

Matt Williamson
  (1:08 PM)

I haven't heard for sure, but he lost a LOT of weight and a LOT of very valuable playing time-game time and practice reps-so I would not hold out hope that he will come in and make an immediate impact in the very near future.

Dan (Buffalo, NY)

MW, if the Browns go into the bye at 1-3 or 0-4 will they be coming out of the bye with a new coach?

Matt Williamson
  (1:09 PM)

That organization isn't the most stable, so anything is possible. However, that wouldn't be a good move. Who do you hire for one thing? Let Crennell do everything he can do to right this ship.

Eric (Sioux City)

Could the Chiefs get a 2nd rounder for LJ next offseason? The guy is a malcontent, and Jamaal Charles is going to be very good once KC gets an oline and Stafford next year.

Matt Williamson
  (1:10 PM)

That sounds about right. There isn't a huge need around the NFL for RBs right now, but moving him would probably be best for both parties. Also, remember that LJ is making an awful lot of money and is a big cap hit-use that $$$ on a guard!

Dan (Chicago)

Kyle Orton missed receivers open downfield all day against carolina. He doesn't make mistakes, but you gotta hit the HR once in a while. Who is better for that team, Orton or Grossman? As a bears fan I'm actually sitting here wishing we had Griese back.

Matt Williamson
  (1:12 PM)

I never did understand moving Griese since they didn't get a whole lot back in return. I would Orton os best over Grossman for the reasons you touched on-doesn't make crucial mistakes. Let the D and Special Teams (with Hester) keep the game close and see what happens. Not a believer at all in Grossman...can't say that I love Orton either. That postiion will hold them back this year and it must be upgraded this offseason. Must be upgraded.

James: Chicago IL

Have you heard the latest rumor that T. Jackson benched, Ferotte to start? Smart move at this point?

Matt Williamson
  (1:13 PM)

It would be a smart move. Like the Minny situation, I don't love either guy, T Jax is holding that team back. Just such poor accuracy. Frerotte will throw the ball better, which is a start.

Jason (Michigan)

When will the Raiders turn J. Russell lose and let him air it out?? Seems like the way they run the ball there should be some open chances down field??

Matt Williamson
  (1:14 PM)

You would think that, especially off play action. But...big but here....I don't like ANY aspect of their passing offense. The protection stinks. Russell may end up being great, but has a very long way to go. The WRs are sub par on a good day.

Robert - Vegas

Matt - if the game passed by the great Joe Gibbs, then it must have flown past Teddy Cottrell (Chargers DC) at warp speed, just like it did Walsh & Shell...the man was retired for a reason and should do so again. That said, SD lacks a pass rush & leadership on D, so why don't they sign Colvin who is available?

Matt Williamson
  (1:16 PM)

There must be more wrong with Colvin than we know. He was unemployed for quite a while before Hous took a chance on him-then released him. As for Cottrell, I simply do not get how you can have your D sit back and get thrown on like that without changing something up. Bring some heat!!!

Aaron (Cincinnati)

Two assumptions from Cincinnati...let me know if this sounds right. 1. Marvin has to go either during the season or after. 2. Like the Raiders job no respectable coach will want the job due to ownership.

Matt Williamson
  (1:16 PM)

1. True 2. True

Ryan (America's Finest City)

Alright, I take back what I said about Jammer but it looks to me that Cromartie is the OVER-RATED one!!

Matt Williamson
  (1:18 PM)

Fair enough. However, Cromartie was VERY close to getting his hands on a couple of those throws. I know it didn't happen, but if he grabs one there is a good chance he is quickly turning it into six for SD and that game is much different. Still too much of a risk taker and his route recognition needs a lot of work, but he can start for my team any time. Remember, this guy only played one true season at Florida State and is still a puppy.

Columbia, Mo

Everyone keeps talking about getting rid of L.J so Jamall Charles can start...where have the thoughts gone about Kolby Smith? He filled in GREAT last year when L.J was hurt. I don't see what everyone else sees in Charles..yeah he is fast, so was J.J. Arrington.

Matt Williamson
  (1:19 PM)

I have no problem with K Smith either, which made the Charles draft pick a little disconcerting. But Charles does have big play ability and this O is short in that department-understatement of the year. I wouldn't want Charles or Smith as my everydown guy, but together, they might be fine, esp considering you could potentially add an extra 2nd rounder and a free agent or two with the $$$ KC is paying LJ.

Jeff (KS)

I now its a rebuilding process, but it is pathetic for the Chiefs to give up 300 rushing yards to a team that they know can't pass. I thought Dorsey was supposed to have an immediate impact. He looks worse than Bunkley his rookie season.

Matt Williamson
  (1:20 PM)

I can't argue that. Dorsey is very surprising to me. The degree of KC's awfulness is not.

Ken (Tarzana, CA)

I know that very few in the media are giving the Cardinals any credit after starting off 2-0. But how many in the media have actually watched all or part of their first two games?

Matt Williamson
  (1:21 PM)

I have no idea. They were my AFC West preseason pick to win the division. Believer here. MUCH better D than many realize and this team is far more than just Boldin and Fitz.

CJ NY NY

How is Romo a great QB on a great team that has not won a playoff game since 1993, please.

Matt Williamson
  (1:22 PM)

You do realize that Tony Romo has not been the starter in Dallas since 1993, right? I am not going to blame the guy for their troubles in the late 90s. He will win playoff games. Many of them.

James (Corona, CA)

Is there any hope for the Lions D or do they need to blow it up and start over with players who haven't played for Tampa at one point?

Matt Williamson
  (1:23 PM)

That DL needs a lot of work. I like Redding, but all the others are rotational/backup types. They need a S Rice/D Freeney type. Of course those guys don't grow on trees, but the entire pass D is predicated on getting to the QB with the front four. They can't do that...nor can they stop the run.

Pete C (Newark DE)

Matt, if any team is in a must win week 3 situation who is it?

Matt Williamson
  (1:24 PM)

Clev comes to mind. Such a tough schedule that they really cannot afford to get too deep into a hole right off the bat.

Majeed

How does Jake Long look?

Matt Williamson
  (1:24 PM)

Like a rookie. Like a big strong talented rookie who will take a year before he starts to pay dividends. However, he will pay dividends.

Ben (St Paul Mn)

It's official. Frerotte is starting on Sunday. Will this give the passing game a boost in your opinion? It's my opinion that if nothing else it will free up some room for Peterson as Frerotte has demonstrated at least some ability to throw the ball in his career. Jackon has never done so. Ever

Matt Williamson
  (1:26 PM)

Good move. Should see a few less 8 or 9 man fronts, but still, every DCoordinator in the league is going to try to make Minny beat them through the air. Berrien should see one on one attention, as should Rice. While neither is great, when they do get seperation there is now a much better chance that the ball will get into their hands.

Ryan (America's Finest City)

Has Scouts Inc changed their views on which team has the better WRs? Chargers or Broncos?

Matt Williamson
  (1:28 PM)

It wasn't a Scouts, Inc view. It was a Matt Williamson view and it was a very tough decision before that game to put a check mark in a box for one of those two teams. I still would put that check mark in SD's box however. Marshall is a superstar and MUCH better than any SD WR, but Gates is also a fantastic player-a game changing player who DCoordinators stay awake worrying about. SD has a deep and talented group of WRs. Scheffler is the real deal, as is Royal. Not an easy decision.

Dan (Chicago)

In college, I once went down to the tunnel and booed Jay Cutler off the field at half time and called for the back up (hey vandy was in the middle of blowing their only shot at a bowl in 25 years). How dumb do I look now?

Matt Williamson
  (1:29 PM)

Pretty dumb. We all make mistakes. When I was watching high school tape at Pitt, I didn't think AJ Hawk was good enough to play for us. Thought he was an overrated recruit. Everyone who watches players long enough has a few of those to tell.

len (oakland)

Matt, how is it that the lions continue to suck and Millen still has a job? Does Millen have the goods on the Fords to keep his job?

Matt Williamson
  (1:29 PM)

That is the only thing I can see. Makes no sense.

Mike (Boca Raton)

do you think that Santonio Holmes is one of the better wrs in the league? although not 'elite', he sure looks like a nice weopan to have and is only getting better.

Matt Williamson
  (1:31 PM)

Very true. I wouldn't call him a true #1 NFL WR though and honestly, I don't throw that title around easily. He doesn't demand the ball like TO-who by the way, is the best WR in the game today-or others like Andre J, S Smith, etc. Holmes is very good though and only getting better.

Eric (Akron, OH)

How much worse does Derek Anderson have to play before Brady Quinn gets a shot?

Matt Williamson
  (1:31 PM)

A fair amount worse, but I predicted that Quinn woud become the starter in Cleveland around Week 8 to 10...feeling good about that prediction now.

Ryan (WI)

How funny is it that (in a hypothetical situation) Lane Kiffin being fired in Oakland and hired in Detroit would be considered positive career progress? Or is that a sad implication as to how far the Raiders (read: Al Davis) have fallen?

Matt Williamson
  (1:33 PM)

If I were Kiffin, I would much rather have the Lions job. Neither is ideal-don't get me wrong-but there would be less meddling.

Dan (Buffalo, NY)

Hey Matt, is it possible that you could be more of a homer?

Matt Williamson
  (1:34 PM)

Dan, Why's that? From Pittsburgh here. What have I said that is SO Pro-Pittsburgh? I like Santonio Holmes but don't think he is a true #1? Yeah, that is some serious Homer-ism. I am all ears to hear your rebuttle.

Evan (West Palm)

I have Bulger on my fantasy team and he blows. Can you recommend a young QB that will actually get me some points. What about Gus Ferotte?

Matt Williamson
  (1:35 PM)

How about O'Sullivan? I would much rather have JT than Bulger. Tough to recommend guys when I don't know who you have to chose from. Frerotte is less than exciting for FF reasons.

Jeff (Orange, Tx)

Is it too early to put Felix Jones on the rookie of the year ballot?

Matt Williamson
  (1:36 PM)

There are a TON of good looking candidates for that title. Will be interesting. In the preseason, I picked J Stweart. He looked great this past week, but so do a lot of other rookies. Forte?

Mike (Boca Raton)

Please prove you are a homer by commenting on the great and underrated Pittsburgh Steelers TE Heath Miller. We haven't talked about him at all this year. His catch against Cleveland Sunday night in those weather conditions was CLUTCH!!!

Matt Williamson
  (1:37 PM)

One of the best players at his position. Does it all and does it all well. Tough. Smart. Great size and knows how to use it. Sticky hands. Reliable. Above average blocker in both the run and pass game. Would catch more passes on many other teams. Still, he doesn't threaten a D like Gates or some of the other top notch TEs like K2 or Witten. Exceptional player though.

Jeff (St. Louis)

Matt who should the Rams take with the 1st pick? A tackle, Monroe, to replace Barron? Crabtree to help the passing game? Or Stafford; and cut Bulger and his ridiculously undeserved contract.

Matt Williamson
  (1:38 PM)

It is a smidge early for that conversation, but any of those three would be fine additions. All are huge need positions. Need a high chaarcter guy to build the O around.

Tim (San Diego)

Matt, providing there are playoff implications for both teams, what are your thoughts on the SD-Denver rematch week 17 in SD?

Matt Williamson
  (1:39 PM)

Ask me 14 weeks from now. I was apart of the Power Rankings that is on our NFL front page and did rank SD slightly ahead of Denver.

JL (Hoboken, NJ)

With Bob Sanders out for 4-6 weeks, among other injuries, are the Titans now the favorites to take the AFC South crown?

Matt Williamson
  (1:40 PM)

Wow, that is tough to say. Jacksonville is in big trouble and I can't see them going to the post season this year any more. Hous isn't as bad as they looked in Week 1, but probably are not a playoff team either. Sanders being out is huge and that run D already is terrible. It will now be worse. However, Peyton Manning. Peyton Manning. Hard to bet against him. Tenn might run for 250 against the Colts though.

Tony (MI)

Who would you start this week?Chotchery, S. Holmes or E.Royal pick two.

Matt Williamson
  (1:41 PM)

Holmes-cant' bench him. Will have some lean weeks, but he is an every week starter. Cotch would be the other. Favre likes him and he is an underrated football player. Nothing wrong with Royal, but his targets are sure to deminish a bit.

Benjamin Plattsburgh

I still say Kenny Phillips will be rookie of the year, giants dont start rookies till around week 4 to prevent them from hitting the rookie wall late in the season

Matt Williamson
  (1:42 PM)

I was talking OROY for that last post, but on the other side of the ball Phillips has a great shot. Rivers does as well in Cincy. Mayo could make noise. How about Lofton in Atl? Some guys will pop up.

Joseph (Sacramento, CA)

If you had a brand new franchise and could take any player in the NFL right now to build your team around who would you take? One for offense and one for defense. Thanks.

Matt Williamson
  (1:45 PM)

Extremely dificult decision, but the player woould have to be young and of strong character. And of couse at a very important position. I think it comes out tomorrow, but all of us Scouts, Inc guys had to rank Romo, Eli, Rivers, Cutler and Roethlisberger. I ranked them: 1. Be 2. Romo 3. Eli 4. Cutler 5. Rivers. Along those lines and to properly answer your question, I would probably take Roethlisberger. He is the type of QB who can take hits and can create plays on his own. Joe Thomas would be a consideration. On D, I want a Defensive Lineman. Maybe Mario Williams. Certainly open to suggestions.

Jeff (Orange, Tx)

After Monday Night's game, who is your NFC favorite?

Matt Williamson
  (1:45 PM)

Still the Boys. Picked them to win it all a couple months ago. Sticking with it.

Mike (Boca Raton)

do you think cleveland and jacksonville overreacted by signing their respective qbs to fairly big extensions in the offseaon?

Matt Williamson
  (1:46 PM)

No to Garrard and DA's contract is very Browns-freindly in that they can cut him after this year without a huge cap hit. Both make sense to me. Garrard is good enought to win it all with and had a fantastic season in 2007. I don't blame him for that O's problems.

Jim (Austin)

So give us your take on Sunday's Packer/Cowboys matchup? Are the Packers outmatched or is this going to be a close game?

Matt Williamson
  (1:48 PM)

GREAT game. I told you guys that I ranked Dallas #1 in the power rankings. I think I put GB at #4. Big time teams. I do like Dallas to win it, but should be a battle. Dallas excellent-and huge-OL is where their best advantage lies. Keep pounding Barber and wear that D down. Slip in some Felix and bombs to TO.

joe (philadelphia)

now i KNOW everyone at ESPN is up in arms about the cowgirls but how about some respect for the eagles?

Matt Williamson
  (1:48 PM)

They were #2 overall in my power rankings. That is as high as I can go on them and probably had him ranked higher than anyone else who put together a list-just a hunch.

Matt Williamson
  (1:49 PM)

I also picked Phlly to edge out PGH (I am such a homer) this upcoming week and also picked them to go to the Super Bowl in 2007-they peaked too late last year. Big Biridie Believer here.

Steve (MA via East Hartford)

Patrick Willis on D?

Matt Williamson
  (1:50 PM)

Immediatly thought of him and this isn't his fault, but if I am building a D, ILB is the last position I address. Much like RB on O. Build everything else and then plug a playmaker in there afterwards. DL makes the world go around.

Justin (St Paul)

How much do you think Bradshaw and Ward will cut into Jacobs numbers this year? It seems like a RBBC to me.

Matt Williamson
  (1:52 PM)

I agree-but Jacobs will get hurt at some point. He has to running like he does with his high pads. He always does. Good to have three RBs for them. Of the three, Ward impresses me the least and would be "Just a Guy" on a team that didn't have such a good run blocking OL or ability to throw. Still, not a bad player, but I could see his touches dropping until Jacobs gets hurt.

Harry (Florida)

How about Ed Reed on D?

Matt Williamson
  (1:52 PM)

Not so young any more. Some injury concerns creeping in.

len (oakland)

you see any light in Miami?

Matt Williamson
  (1:52 PM)

Oh yeah. The men in charge of that HUGE rebuilding project are the right people for the job. There is light...but it isn't close by.

Jake (NY, NY)

Do you think the Vikes can turn it around and make the playoffs?

Matt Williamson
  (1:54 PM)

I do, but didn't pick them to go before the season started. Wouldn't pick them now either, but the QB change is the right move. Still, it could happen. That D is excellent and I expect them to get even better on that side of the ball. Peterson is a rare rare species.

JL (Hoboken, NJ)

Who will take care of return duties if Hester is out for a few weeks? Bennett looked good in the preseason

Matt Williamson
  (1:54 PM)

Yeah he did-so did Manning. That team stresses special teams and are consistently excellent in all phases. Same with Buffalo. That goes a LONG way. I wouldn't worry too much.

Benjamin Plattsburgh

I could cry but if you asked me before middle last season I would have said Sean Taylor, pure God body the most physically talented safety to ever play the game. Even as a Giants fan I could appreciate that.

Matt Williamson
  (1:55 PM)

I had to post that one

Mike (Boca Raton)

does Miami LB Joey Porter have anything left in his tank or were your stillers sage-like in getting rid of him?

Matt Williamson
  (1:56 PM)

Sage-Like. Harrison is double the player that Porter is at this point. Porter isn't done quite yet, but he certainly is not the long term answer. Big mistake by the last regime in thinking they were much closer than they were. Now, he has no trade value since he was so expensive.

MJ (Boston)

Did you see Cromartie get torched in Denver? Is he even the Chargers best corner?

Matt Williamson
  (1:57 PM)

I did and he isn't. Talked about him a few posts ago-scroll back. I still like him a lot.

Harry (Florida)

Does Miami need to draft a WR at the top next year? Totally goes against Parcells' history, but obviously Ginn ain't cutting it. He's not even returning kicks anymore. WHAT A JOKE!

Matt Williamson
  (1:58 PM)

I am not ready to kill Ginn yet, but yes, a STUD WR in the Top 5 makes all the sense in the world. A superstar OLB wouldn't be terrible either or a shut down CB like Jenkins. Still, WR is the best move to grown with Henne.

C (Orlando)

Demarcus Ware??

Matt Williamson
  (1:58 PM)

REAL tough to argue that one. He is a better player by a substantial margin than Mario right now. S-T-U-D.

JB (Charlotte)

Considering how Carolina has come together without Steve Smith, can getting him back be a bad thing?

Matt Williamson
  (2:00 PM)

Oh-I don't think so. Heard an interview with S Smith on M Irvin's radio show. He said for the first time he can remember, he doesn't feel like the weight of the O is on his shoulders. He was ALL they had for a long time. Now, he can just do his thing, make plays and make a very good O even much better. That group is going to put up a LOT of points.

Matt Williamson
  (2:00 PM)

Well everyone, I am out. This was a blast. If you didn't know, I hold this chat every Wednesday from 1 to 2. Stop back.
