Sorry I'm a minute or two late. Had to go back through the drive thru twice since they gave me curly fries instead of regular. I know, life's tough. Fire away.
Are we seeing Junior under more pressure this year? And is he handling it worse than in the past?
Wow. An Earnhardt Jr. question right off the bat. Why am I not surprised. There is more pressure to a degree because he's got the best equipment and people expect him to do well. But I don't think that has anything to do with the way his radio conversations with Tony Eury Jr. have gone isf that is what you are aluding to. He has always talked that way to his cousin.
I am tired of K. Kahne missing the chase by like 1 good race. He always starts off the best possible he can then flops for 5 races and comes on strong in the end just to miss it by this much. It is hard on my blood pressure, lol, my question is what has to happen for them to be a dominating team?
Kasey has proven to be good when he has a good car under him. I would have to say the engineering isn't quite as good as the guys at Toyota, Ford and Chevy and the engine package is outdated. They're working on a new engine that should be ready soon.
When will Kasey Kahne actually finish a season in the chase?
Hard to say. When Dodge gets its act completely together and Kasey finds the consistency it takes to be a championship contender.
do you think it took for reed going to gem to see him do a 360
Not sure I am following your question. Please clarify.
Hey David! What is the lastest with A.J. Allmendinger and Scott Speed? I really don't want to see AJ leave Red Bull, he has made many great strides this season.
It's a good sign that Jay Frye is returning at GM. He'd like to keep both. I believe you'll see Red Bull run two and a half cars next year. A.J. may come out on the short end of that one, though.
Thanks the conversation that was released sounded like, well, Hendrick is right Junior needs to let it roll off quicker than he does. Most of the time he sounds pretty calm. Yet from what you just wrote he can be like his old man sometimes on the radio. I heard his dad on the radio when I went to Bristol for the spring race. Colorful, yes it was.
Fan from Hawaii. How's the wearther there. The difference between Junior and his old man as you say is his old man always seemed to get better as the race went along. Junior isn't, and that may go back to communication.
what I ment was since reed has a new home for 2009, he has done better
Oh. Perhaps the pressure is off and he's just relaxing and driving.
Tis is stupd...wy Bush wins the seeson and is alredy losing by big point...I thinks the reglar seeson needs to be more importent...maybe lock the chase cars into the top 12 positons of eech race basd on the way they finshd the seeson? so fo wining the seeson, bush gets the pole for all 10 chase races...jus an idea bc the 10 bonus point just ain't enuff!!! thoughts?
I've got mixed emotions. Maybe give wins more, then a regular season like Busch's will be better rewarded. But going back to even to start isn't unusual in sports. The Patriots started the NFL playoffs even with other non-wild card teams. NBA regular season champion have to win their playoff series just like a team that finished second or third. So while it seems unfair, it's really not.
Why is Tony Stewart so mad at all the time? He takes everything out on everybody, even his pit crew is not safe.
It's just his intense desire to win. Some people handle it well. Others not so well. But you can't fault him for being passionate.
Nice and warm here. Love the ocean breezes. So, is it that Senior communicated better to his team than Junior about what each wanted or wants in the car during the race?
So jealous. I won't see the coast again until my honeymoon in December. As for the Earnhardt's, I'm not going to compare. One has seven titles. The other has none. Not a fair comparison.
How comes Jeremy Mayfield's name is NEVER mentioned when they list the list of avaiable drivers?. Jeremy has 5 cup wins, 2 Chase Berths, 96 top 10's, 12 pole positions. is an experienced driver, takes care of equipment.Jeremy can get the job done.
David - who wins this weeken and who is a dark horse that could sneak a top 10 or top 15.
You'd have to say the usual suspects are favorites. Biffle has run well at Dover. So has Gordon, Johnson and Busch. As for darkhorse, how about Martin Truex Jr. He's not in the Chase, but he's done well at Dover.
Honeymoon? Didn't know you were available.
LOL. I'm not.
Good enough and fair enough answer. Have a great Honeymoon.
Thanks. Just don't think it's fair to put the pressure of Earnhardt Jr. to live up to his dad's accomplishments.
can kyle busch shake off the week one chase struggles? or will he completely implode like he has in the last 2 chases he was in with hendrick
That will be interesting to see. My guess is he'll come back like gangbusters and make a statement, but you never know.
Honestly David, these guys know that part of the gig is the media and fans. Shouldn't they carry a little bit of kindness with them, i know emotions run high, but geez.
Hey, I agree with you 100 percent. Guys that leave the track in a huff because they had a bad day disappointment me. They want the attention when they do well, but don't want to be bothered when they struggle. You can't have it both ways in my book.
The Pats get a huge advantage...a week off and home field throughout the AFC playoffs...except for the super bowl (trying to remember if they won that one), they get a huge advantage. I think the pole for the reg season points leader is fun...also satisfies Stewart to a degree on his desire to get the chasers lumped together. I think Tank is on to something!!!
i said they start the same as other non-Wild Card teams. But they entered last year's playoffs 16-0 and had to play the same number of games as other division winners. No advantage.
What about a NASCAR old timer's race? Only guys over 50 with at least a few cup wins can enter...20 laps in similar cars (IROC style of everybody driving the same thing)...I'd love to watch Rusty v. Waltrip once more???
I love that idea. Problem is getting somebody to pay for the cars. But it would be cool to see David Pearson, Buddy Baker, Bobby Allison and maybe even The King go at it again.
How about an snwer for her Mayfield Question???
Pretty sure I answered it.
looking on to 2009 do you think mark martin will have a solid shot at his first title. Also do you think he will have a great shot at the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard, it would be awesome to see him win all of those things that he has never been able to accomplish in his great career. Also do you know if Cassill will be driving full time nationwide next year and if so do you think he is good enough to run with the big dogs in that series?
Here's Martin's problem. He's a good driver, but he's still the third best on his own team behind Johnson and Gordon. There also are guys like Kyle Busch that are better now. Can Martin win? Certainly. But a lot has to go his way.
Uhhh, no you didn't...
Think I said because teams may be wary of his past relationships with owners and are simply looking for new blood. I can't think of another reason, because Jeremy has proven to be better than many guys that have rides.
And if this is Jeremy, what do you keep behind your house?
The Pats got to play their games at home? I know my Giants went 4-0 on the road in the playoffs, but come on...the NFL rewards its teams well...playing a championship game @ home versus the other top team in the league is a BIG advantage...the advantage in the chase isn't much at all.....
I agree, home field is an advantage. But they still start with the same score, 0-0 in each game.
I think the chase is a joke, if NASCAR wants a real system it is going to take time to develop it. Nascar use to be awesome, now there is all kind of modifications to prohibit any kind of speed at all, and the last three races I haven't even watched, these short tracks are all that are interesting to me, the medium tracks i dont even turn on anymore.
You're welcome to that opinion, but I thought the race last weekend was interesting. And as I've argued before, go back 15 or 20 years ago and there often were only one or two cars on the lead lap. Snore.
who will be the first to get a W this year, Jeff Gordon or Tony Stewart? Tony has been close, probably could have done it last week if he wouldn't have had some bad luck but it has just seemed like gordon has been off for a majority of the year.
Tony has been in position more to win and led more laps, so I guess you have to go with him.
Hi David, You know the rumor mill is throwing a party for Scott Riggs and AJ Allmendinger, but seems to have closed up shop on Jeremy Mayfield lately, seems like I haven't heard his name at all in recent weeks. I like Mayfield, he's a good guy, he's got 5 more wins and 2 more chase appearances than anyone else can claim, but nobody's talking about Mayfield anymore. What do his prospects look like?
Any word on DEI Sponsorship for Aric Almirola and Regan Smith?
Nothing at all, except I heard Army is leaving the 8 to go to Newman at Stewart-Haas.
Everything I buy on the cheap and fix up to sell
I was looking for goats.
I know/suspect that KyleB and Tony were not happy and that is why they left the track. Should NASCAR require them the drivers to be available for interviews - even if it requires a cool down time right after the race?
If they're in the Chase I believe they should be available, expecially this early in when everybody is in contention.
Congradulations on your up comming marriage. Do you think that Jeremy Mayfield will get a ride with the talk of all these mergers going on?
If he were going to get a ride my guess is he'd already be hired. It's not like he has to get out of a contract or anything.
I think it is because he's a mean crybaby, not to sound childish, I met him at speedweeks in New Smyrna, he was a complete disappointment in his attitude, wow I thought he would be cooler than that. I just see his attitude and the way he complains on the track about people driving reckless, and he is the main one trying to wreck people, i wish Kasey ahd the fortitude to put him in the wall.
Thanks for the commentary.
Why leave the 8 team who is up alot higher in points to go to and unproven team in Stewart-Hass.
Newman is a proven driver, a Daytona 500 winner. Aric is a rookie. Guess they feel they'll get more exposure.
David, with his aggressive nature-some would call it a bad temper-Do you think Stewart will succeed as a driver-owner? Thanks
He's succeeded as a track owner and a USAC Midget owner, so why not?
What I can't understand is why people have a problem with the point system of the Chase. Nascar simply has made a playoff system and sometimes (i.e. most of the time) the best regular season team doesn't win in the playoffs. Look at other sports: the NY Giants are Superbowl Champions, wild-card teams routinely win the World Series, and rarely does the #1 seeds in college basketball ever win March Madness. How is the Chase any different?
You make my point. Thanks.
Comparing racing to football? Come on people. Racing is pretty much all out all the time except for yellow flags. Football is what 10 seconds of action with 40 seconds in between each "play"? It took me a while to adjust to the chase. It appears about as fair/level as it can be right now. In order to win in racing (and football) you have to finish. Unless you want to be a Red Cross on the Regular Season Points leaders car and rule that no one can bend that car's metal for any reason it will not happen. Each race is a new race and KyleB or anyone else has to take their chances just like the next driver. Giving KyleB the pole for every race? What if his car is junk and causes a wreck on the first lap?
So Keren, do you get enough racing coverage in Hawaii?
Now that Greg Biffle won round one, is it possible that he has enough in the tank to go toe to toe with Edwards and Johnson, or was this win a fluke? His history at 1.5 mile tracks is very good, but Martinsville and Talladega are not. Any chance he sustains to Homestead?
He definitely has what it takes. He lost the 2005 title by only 35 points to Tony Sewart. Five of the remaining tracks are 1.5 miles, which Roush cars dominate. He also has a great track record at Dover. He's definetly a threat.
Where do you think Smoke will finish after homestead. Other than those 2 mishaps on pit road, he was doing the best driving in New Hampshire. I think he will follow in the foot steps of Biffle and get his first win of the season very soon if not this weekend at Dover.
I can't see him finishing much further back than fourth or fifth unless he has tremendous bad luck.
whats up newton, i won't harass ya about about junior being overrated this week haha. But realistically what do ya think Tony & Co. will be able to accomplish next year, do you think they can at least get one win? or will the season be a total disappointment because the team will still be getting up on its feet, but that just seems hard to imagine with hendrick equipment and some of the guys tony has already brought in like Grubb
Honestly, despite Hendrick support, I believe it will be a struggle. Of course, I thought Toyota would take half a season to get on track at Gibbs.
People love me today!
Yeah. Sure you're not behind this?
Blount gave us his top five drivers going into Homestead. Which 5 do you pick?
Johnson, Edwards, Biffle, Hamlin and Busch. What did Terry say?
Hey David, do you see Matt Kenseth leaving Roush Fenway after next year and is it possible he could end up at Hendrick Motorsports once Martin finshes out his 1-year stint with Hendrick?
Never thought about Hendrick for Matt. He is good friends with Junior. My guess is he'll stay at Roush or move into the Yates shop next door. I'm betting Truex Jr. finds a way into the No. 5 unless he has a remarkable seasona at DEI next season.
How bout RCR this year, Bowyer is looking great in both Divisions, right?
He's doing well in both. Not sure I'd say great.
Ganassi-MWR rumors more fact than fiction?
Fiction from what I've been told.
If it's so expensive to build cars and hard to get advertising than why are all these crappy teams/drivers still racing? I just to see the 12 left in the chase do their thing. The other teams/drivers just clutter the track and cause a bunch of wrecks.
Yeah, but having the rest of them out there makes it a lot more interesting.
how did you get engaged, if you don't mind verblizing
So romantic. Pouring rain. Front porch. Dog slobbering. Cat looking through window. Wash't how I planned it, but what is?
Blount picked Edwards, Johnson, Busch, Biffle and Junior. I like his pick better because I'm a Junior fan!
Terry is a Junior fan as well. You can't leave Busch off, though.
Last week the question was ask as to what tracks you?d add/delete from the Chase. You gave your top 10, LV being listed first?why? But also, what?s wrong with our track here in NH, why is that not in your top 10, hmmm?
Maybe I should go back and add NH. I was totally impressed with the attendance on a dreadful day. As for Vegas, just think the lights and glitter set the perfect mood to kick off the Chase.
What ever happened to my attempt to become a NASCAR driver...I raced a couple of truck races, but I've been in a fog since...you know?
Keep on trucking.
What's goin on with Yates racing, or should I say Yates/Roush racing? Is it safe to say that Colin Braun and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (development drivers) are in line for these two rides at some point when Jack see's them ready.
Yates is doing just find with the lack of sponsorship. As for future drivers, too early too tell. You may be on to something, though.
Any sponsorship news for Yates? I think Kvapil has done a good job in that 28 ride.
Theyr'e still plugging away, but you're right Kvapil has done a good job.
Newton what are my chances this weekend at dover, and can i stay on a roll through miami, my guys have done it before, what do you think?
You'll crash on lap 48 and then return 48 laps later and finish 43.
Why does Mayfield have goats behind his house???
Good question. They were a gift from his wife. Plus they keep the mules and dogs company.
What do you think of drivers being able to throw out one race in the chase, would that be too much of a hassle. It stinks to see a driver taken out when its not his fault.
It would be too much of a hassle. We might not know the champion until an hour after the final race.
here is the difference between a great driver and a driver with a good car. Great drivers tell their crew chiefs what they want in the car and give good input. And they don't cuss like sailors throughout the whole race. Drivers with good cars (like jr.) just complain their car is tight or loose and don't really give any feed back other than that, and spend their whole race cussing and complaining rather than trying to figure out their issue to make them faster.
Can't totally agree with you. Kyle Busch rants a lot about his car, but he's proven to be great this season. But I agree that drivers that communicate the best tend to fare better on the track.
what are the chances we see ryan newman get one more win for old man penske before he leaves to Stewart Haas?
I'd be surprised. That has been an average car most of the year since Daytona.
Is it unusual for an owner to get on the radio and tell his driver to stop whining and give his crew chief the information he need to fix the car?
You don't hear it every day. Give Mr. Hendrick props for taking charge of this situation. If Junior were to win the title you can look back on that and say it played a role.
how do you see jj, edwards, and busch finishing this weekend?
Somewhere in the top 10.
If there was a senior league, you think sponsors like Tide (Waltrip) and STP (King) will pony up money to get on the cars?
I doubt it. This couldn't be an every weekend deal. Maybe 10 races throughout the year, if that meny.
Dave...do you think that nascar will let more sponsors be able to sponsor where needed...like let in a few more phone or insurance companies...since it's mighty tight for sponsors now?
NASCAR has shown no signs of backing down on keeping those companies out with Sprint as the sponsor.
In your opinion, minus Joey Logano (jgr), which team has the next real deal when it comes to up and coming drivers ready to make some noise in Sprint Cup?
Maybe Richard Childress' grandson, Austin. He'll get good equipment, which is key.
I fear your answer to this question. With the way the economy has been and fear with companies putting their money in NASCAR, is it possible that the 2009 Daytona 500 may not have a full field?
I can't seethat ever happening. Teams will go to Daytona hoping to make the field because the payoff even for last is better than most tracks.
Well, guys and gals, I have to run. Thanks for all the questions. Chat with you next week.
