Chat with Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Ok, let's kick it off.

Angel (Brooklyn, NY)

Hey bill, great work on the AFC West... anyway what is the latest status regarding Justin Fargas, and are the raiders looking into a more sure handed receiver than Ronald "Stonehands" CUrry to help the confidence of Jamarcus Russell

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

Thanks, Angel. Fargas will likely not play Sunday in Buffalo and McFadden is nursing a turf toe. Could be interesting. As for receivers, there just isn't anyone out there who would make a major difference at this point.

Ryan (America's Finest City)

Two weeks in a row the Denver WRs have exposed Deangelo Hall and Cromartie as the OVER-RATED corners that they are. Does Mike Mackenzie make it three weeks in a row?

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

That's what is so amazing about Denver's start. They beat up soem pretty good pass defenses. The Broncos earned those 80 points.

Paul, Boulder CO

What do you think Jay Cutler's chances are for NFL MVP this year? With weapons like Marshall and Royal, I would put him in one of the top spots.

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

If Cutler keeps up this pace, yes he is a real candidate. Who has been bettter in the first two weeks?

PT (Franklin, NC)

Do you think the Raiders have a chance this week against Buffalo, and who will see the most carries Mcfadden or Bush?

Bill Williamson
  (2:07 PM)

McFadden will likley get the initial carries but if his toe fatigues, Bush will get plenty of carries. As for Oakland's chances, it needs to make a lot of big plays. Buffalo is a tough place to play and the Bills are playing very well.

Chris: (Broomfield, CO)

Bill..love your blog. 2 questions: 1)What is your prediction on my Chargers vs. Jets? 2) I know we missed Lightouts, but why's our defense suck so bad? I'm thinking we rank 30th or 31st as of now

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

Thanks Chris, I think the Chargers really need this game, that's what I think. Yes, the defense has been bad which was unexpected. The Chargers are 0-2 because the pass defense is not very good right now.

Brendan (Baltimore, MD)

Looks like the Broncos made the right call in picking Royal over DeShowboat Jackson, eh? Where is the respect for Shanahan's recent drafts? Clady, Royal, Scheffler, Cutler, Marshall...all studs in the last three years!

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

They relaly liked Jackson early but they fell in love with Royal. Yes, the recent drafts have been very good after a terribe drought in the early part of the decade.

Jake (SLO, CA)

Bill, word out of SD is that Dobbins is likely going to take Wilhelm's starting MLB spot. Is this a change that had to be made, and will it help shore up their run D?

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

I don't know if that's the answer or not. But the Chargers need something. Remember, Stephen Cooper returns in two weeks. That will help.

tom (hackensack)

the battery charges espn just reported on brandon marshall....is this a new thing?

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

It was an existing case.

Ben (Los Angeles)

Bill, I have the greatest question ever. Where would you rank Denver's 2006 draft class among all time? Think about it, we have 2 possible hall of famers in Cutler and Marshall (you said so yourself), and 2 fantastic players in DE Dumervil and TE Scheffler. And let's not forget that Domenik Hixon is doing great things, eventhough it's not for the Broncos.

Bill Williamson
  (2:15 PM)

Wow, that's interesting, Ben. In fairness, I can't go ahead and say that right now without studying other classes. But yes, it was one big-time class.

ray GORDON REID gainesville FLORIDA

QUESTION TO BILL WILLIAMSON AT 2,15 PM HI BILL VIKINGS OR PANTHERS

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

Vikings

Tito (Brooklyn, NY)

Hey Bill, Any chance that my brooklyn boy Al Davis supports kiffin, or is that relationship just too strained to be salvaged?

Bill Williamson
  (2:17 PM)

They'd need some major league counseling to get that marriage repaired.

Wes (San Diego)

What is this the Denver blog??? Who should start in fantasy? Sammy Morris, Eddie Royal, or Lee Evans. This week. The way this chat is going a Royal pick would not suprise me. Thank you.

Bill Williamson
  (2:17 PM)

Royal

Almar (San Jose,CA)

Does it look like the Raiders defense stepped it up a notch last week or was it because the KC Chiefs offense was too confused from their 3 headed QB rotation?

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

Yes, the Chiefs are not good right now. The Raiders played OK but I wouldn't get ovelry excited about that win.

Ryan (America's Finest City)

New article on ESPN states that misdemeanor chargers were just filled against Marshall on Sept 10th. Could Marshall be facing another suspension?

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

I have to check but the league was aware of this pending issue, I believe.

Bryan (Wichita, KS)

Bill, I absolutely enjoy your blog. Thank you for your efforts. Question is, everyone knows the Raiders are going to struggle this season especially with the off the field issues clouding the organization. From a realistic standpoint, considering the dollars spent in the offseason and the realitively weak schedule, where do you see them ending up. Are 6 to 8 wins completely out of the question?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

Yes, the Raiders can a win 6-8 games because the schedule is fairly easy. We will get a good read on the Raiders this weekend in Buffalo.

Mitch (Little Rock)

Are the Chiefs really doing the right thing with thier youth movement? And should they bring in a veteren QB as a field general?

Bill Williamson
  (2:22 PM)

Yes, because the youth Kansas City has is talented. I think they have to stay young evrywhere, including QB, at this pont.

Almar (San Jose,CA)

It seems that Lane Kiffin has not heard or talked to Al Davis in weeks, Has any media gotten a chance to speak with Al personally either or is he just MIA with everybody?

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

He keeps a pretty low profile.

Alan (San Diego, CA)

will i ever be on this

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

You're on.

Bro (Boulder, CO)

I've always wanted to know what a compensatory draft pick is given out for. Losing players to free agency?

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

Yes, it's based on free agent departures.

Matt (New York)

I got a little debate on my hand at the QB spot. Would you start McNabb or Warner

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

McNabb.

Ryan (DSM)

Isn't a little early to be rating draft classes? Maybe we should wait until one of them makes the Pro Bowl

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

That would help.

Mark (NC)

Why the Vikings? The Panthers are playing really well and getting Steve Smith back only makes the more dangerous.

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

Vikings have their back agaisnt the wall. if they lose, its lights out.

Ryan (America's Finest City)

Brett Favre loves playing on MNF. Any chance he breaks the hearts of Chargers' fans like he did to Denver fans last year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

If I was a Charegrs' fan, I'd be very nervous this week. That's a tough game. San Diego will be crushed if it is 0-3, but Favre will be crushed if he falls to 1-2. This is a very interesting game. I can't wait to get out there for it.

Rick (New York, NY)

Bill, when Al Davis says 'Kiffin is not the same guy I hired', do you think it's possible he actually means that, in that he forgot who he hired in the first place?

Bill Williamson
  (2:29 PM)

I'm not sure on that one at all.

Brendan (Baltimore, MD)

Who has the best pass rush in the West? Seems to me everyone has struggled early on...

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

Good quesiton. No one has exploded yet. But each team has potential there. The Chargers do miss Merriman, though, of course.

Jim.D(Colorado)

Is this the year that Broncos DE Elvis Dumervil makes the ProBowl?

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

He needs 13-15 sacks to go to Hawaii.

Vijay (New York)

Broncos' kick coverage problems seem a major Achilles heel on the team. Can they do anything to improve?

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

They've been trying. That Sproles return pushed San Dieog right back into the game.

Jordan (San Jose)

This whole Al/Kiffin incident is really too bad. The Raiders DO have a pretty good team. The players seem to be behind the coaching staff, including Kiffin. I'm sorry to say but the only way the Raiders are going to be playoff-calibur is if Al leaves.

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

The situaiton is unneccesary. I think Kififn can coach a little bit. But if Al wants him gone, he should just do it. There needs to be resolution there for the players' sake.

Eric (OC, CA)

Who could Al possibly expect to hire next season after how much Kiffin has revealed about what a coach goes through in Oakland these days? Even Rich Gannon has sided with Kiffin...

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

That's the point. Good coaches will be scared off of that situaiton. No coach wants to go through what Kiffin is going through.

Ryan (DSM)

I like your post on the Chiefs fans wanting Quinn. As our insider, have you heard anything from the Chiefs organization concerning picking up another QB?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

For this season?I don't think so, too late. But don't be surprised if getting a franchise quaretrback is the focus on Kansas City's offseason.

Ryan (America's Finest City)

Will Bush give the Broncos the same problems Sproles gave them?

Bill Williamson
  (2:38 PM)

I can see that, yes.

Ryan (Arlington and Va)

Are the Chargers two losses the worst two losses back to back ever??

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

Well, they are historic. The Chargers became the first team to lose back-to-back gams after leading with 30 seconds to go. Amazing, huh?

John (Culver City, CA)

Don't you think the Chiefs would be better served going after Jeff Garcia? He's got to be a better option than Tyler Thigpen

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

Yes, but the Chiefs really don't want to add players over 29.

Taylor (Nebraska)

Steven Jackson or Darren Sproles, Who should i start this week for my fantasy team?

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

I am a big Sproles' fan.

PT (Franklin, NC)

It seems like the Raiders will stay within the organization and promote someone like Rob Ryan or James Lofton, thoughts?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

If a move is made, it will very likely be an in-house. Candidates would b eLofton, Tom Rathman, Rob Ryan.

Alex (Durango, CO)

Bill, after 2 weeks who do you see winning the AFC West? I won't hold you to your prediction! Just curious.

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

That's letting me off the hook. Remember, this is how I had it: San Diego, Oakland, Denver and KC. I have to live with what I picked.

Steve (Syracuse, NY)

What do you think of the Haynesworth plan- playing both VY and KC? Isnt that similar to what they did at the start of VY's rookie season and it failed miserably?

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

I think Haynesworth would make a good senator.

Pants Cortez

Bill! We really miss your work from the Denver Post, you were solid brosef. Question: what are the Broncos going to do about Karl Paymah? Dude is getting burned more frequently than a Britney Spears cigarette. You think they regret trading Foxworth? Where from here? Too early to promote Jack Williams? Thanks pal, love your work...

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

Thank you very much, kind sir. Yes, Paymah needs to tighten the ship or Williams will take over as the nickel. By the way, Denver really likes Williams. he is a playmaker.

Steve (Syracuse, NY)

what do you make of rumors that Lane Kiffin is the next coach for Syracuse? Think he would make a good college coach?

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

First, Kiffin has be no longer the Raiders' coach and then Greg Robinson has to be out. Too much speculating at this point.

Todd (South Dakota)

Can the Broncos make the playoffs relying only on the offense making plays, because from what I have seen the defense is going to struggle again, even with the new additions.

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

No, the defense has to come through for this team to make a real run.

Dylan (Garrison North Dakota)

Can anyone stop Dallas this season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

The Cowboys sure do look good. At least one half of my Super Bowl prediciton is putting in work.

Kyle, Aurora, CO

Jarvis Moss playing this week, Good or Bad?

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

Check in next week on that one, Kyle.

john-Dallas

Does kiffin even want to coach the raiders anymore?

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

Would you?

Dylan (Garrison North Dakota)

With Oregon's QB out, does Boise State have a chance this weekend in Eugene?

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

Have we gotten to this point, people?

Jaron (STL)

Is L.T. better off sitting out a week?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

You know, Jaron, maybe but the Chargers are in no posiiton to keep out their best player. He needs to fight through it and he will.

Stephen (Miami, FL)

Looking forward to seeing Ryan Torain play with Denver, I guess he's meant to be the main RB there since they kept a roster spot open for him?

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

Me too, they love that kid. He should be a factor in the second half of the season. If he's the real deal, that offense will really be something to watch.

Graham Simmons (Owensboro)

Seeing how Aaron Rodgers has played so far are the Packers looking like a Super Bowl team?

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

Sunday night will give us some answers.

Chris (NJ)

Yes, we've gotten to this point Bill. Did you see The Dark Knight?

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

No, any good?

Anthony (Villanova U.)

Is the broncos safety tandem (Manuel and McCree) the worst in the league???

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

It is an area of concern in Denver.

Pat (los angeles)

What do you see from Russell this year as the Oakland QB? He's off to a slow start despite having a solid running game to work with.

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

Yes, but he doesn't get great protection and his receiving crew is not good. GIve the kid some time.

Ryan (Arlington and Va)

IF the Chargers do not make the playoffs, what other teams in the past would this collapse be close to??

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

Plenty of teams fall flat. But I have a feeling the Chargers are going to rebound.

Anthony (Villanova U.)

followup to the safety question: does denver have any answers to it this year, or is it more of a wait until the draft kind of thing??

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

Yep, the draft.

Ryan (America's Finest City)

Any chance John Lynch regrets leaving the Broncos?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

I asked him last week. He feels good.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

That's it. Another great hour. Thanks everyone. Talk to you next week. Enjoy Week 3.
