Greetings Fight Freaks to our weekly chat. Today's notebook is already up, so make sure to check it out along with this week's blogs (plus a random thoughts blog that will be up this afternoon) and new p4p and divisional rankings. Let's get right to it.
First - RIP Oscar Suarez. Rafa, the Nov 1 PPV is shaping up to be very solid, but could you give me a little insight as to the skills of Moruti Mthalane other than he's the mandatory?
Yes, sad news indeed about Oscar Suarez. He was a good man. I hope you take time to read today's blog when it is posted in which I recount a fond memory of him. As for Nov. 1, Donaire's opponent is not a scrub. He's pretty solid and is coming off a win over Hussein Hussein.
Won't Paul's insistence on campaigning anywhere between 147 and 168 for the right fight unnecessarily muddy up the process of contending for belts outside of Welterweight? I mean, Henry Armstrong did all that (and more), but he was a supernatural talent and also fought more than three times a year.
I think Williams is simply looking for major fights and there is nothing wrong with that. He's got a body that seems capable of handling weight up to 168, certainly at 160. But he's keeping his options open in case something big breaks at welterweight, where there are money fights.
Come on Dan.. I'm getting tired of all this Haye non-sense. Shut up and fight someone already. He claimed it would be a top 10'er, now it seems he's exhausted the top 20'ers..ENOUGH!
Couldn't agree more.
Any word on who Duddy is fighting next?
Duddy will take an interim bout most likely in November in Ireland. I wouldn't expect it to be anyone threatening and then move into a January fight with Ronald Hearns, which I think is very interesting.
Guzman really impressed me for 2/3 of the fight against Soto, then ran for the final third. Now he royally screws a stand up, fan friendly champ like Campbell. Dan, how hard will his road back to prominence and respectibility be?
A long way. He's a man who has drawn the ire of fans, media and Showtime. He doesn't make great fights and has zero fan base and expects high purses. He also doesn't have a weight class. That all adds up to a long road back unless he's willing to commit to a division and willing to fight more regularly even if his opponents are not big names.
Who is Gamboa fighting on Oct. 4th and what can we tell me about his oponent?
He's fighting Marcos Ramirez, who is undefeated but never fought anybody.
Do you see this multiple weight fighting becoming a trend in boxing? We have Pac-man, DLH,Calzaghe, Pavlik, and Williams all campaigning at different weights to make big fights. It seems to me that this could be a positive in generating mainstream interest in the sport.
I agree. You go to the divisions where the best fights are.
Did you think Marquez will be able to knockout the durable and steady Casamayor ?
I picked Marquez to win a close decision but the late KO didn't shock me.
But on the upside, now we get Torres/Holt 3 on 12/5.
That fight is not a done deal. It is, as I reported, just in the discussion stages, so just settle down.
Dan-o apologize if this is a dumb question, but Nate Campbell - is that usually how it works - an opponent not making weight and not fighting equals 0 dollars all around?
There's an old saying in boxing, authored by the legendary Chris Dundee from what I understand. It goes like this: When the bell rings, you get paid.
dan, any word on what's next for Tua?
Great news to hear Oscar Diaz came out of his coma after two months. Hopefully he can make a full recovery and live a normal life.
Dan, I know Oscar and Manny are beginning light training, but is there any word on when their 5 city press tour will begin? Any idea if they are making a stop in Philly?
The tour will start early next month and I believe they are planning six cities, but I do not think Philly is part of it.
Waz up Dan? How you think Victor Ortiz will be moved at GBP? I think they should take there time with this kid as he is only 21 and has ALOT of talent.
I agree, but they have very high hopes and expectations of him. But I agree in that he shouldn't be rushed. He still needs to face some more veterans-types before he's matched in a major fight. You want him to be ready for that kind of fight.
Ray mercer, JD Chapman? Is Haye kidding. What a joke! Mercer got beaten by a medicore Rossey a few months ago. Chapman ahsn't fought one halfway decent opponent!
Thankfully, those moronic matches aren't going to happen. The latest on Haye is that it's down to Eddie Chambers or Monte Barrett. Neither thrills me but both are better than those two names you mentioned.
I geuss the latin fake was just a one hit wonder, huh? What is your take on Mora?
Mora is a good fighter, but not a consistent championship level fighter.
I hope Joan Guzman gets Herpes!!!
Tell us how you really feel.
Hey Dan--Last month Paul Williams was not in your top 20 p4p, but this month is rated 14th even though he has had no fight. I don't disagree with that ranking, but I was just curious as to your reasoning.
After talking it over with a variety of people who thought I had made a mistake in not ranking him I reconsidered and realized they were right. I can admit it when I make a mistake and I made a mistake by not ranking Williams, so I hope that error has been fixed.
So what will it be? Two years before Guzman gets another shot on HBO or, especially Showtime? Three?
Dan, I know it's still a week away, but what percent chance do you give Mayorga? I see Shane by KO in under 6.
I don't think Shane will stop him early like that but I do like Shane to win the fight.
For those not aware the notebook is up and is a must read to avoid questions already answered in it.
The Freaks appreciate the reminder.
How did AC Slater get a job as a commentator for Golden Boy promotions?
Mario Lopez is a huge boxing fan and follows it. He's known Oscar and he has experience doing commentary on many of Top Rank's international feeds of fight cards. So when Golden Boy put the show together they wanted a host and he fit in well.
Peace DR. With Margarito and Cotto in works on having a rematch next year, where does that leave Clottey? Which options does he have now? Oh, and now I am thankful that the Haye fight won't be televised.
Clottey is in a tough spot because few will want to fight him. But if Cotto and Margarito's early 2009 fights come on separate dates, Clottey will fight on one of the televised undercards, Bob Arum told me yesterday. However, if Cotto and Margarito fight on the same telecast from different cities, there wouldn't be enough money for a Clottey fight. So that's where they are.
Great news about Oscar Diaz! How did Delvin Rodriguez sound when you spoke to him? He seems like a good dude.
Delvin seemed genuinely happy about the news. He's a good kid and a sensitive guy. I know he was relieved.
I hate to be a conspiracy theorist, but is it possible the Guzman pull out wasnt announced until an hour before the bout to prevent consumers (like me) from purchasing the Marquez casa fight? Perhaps a move by Dapper Don?
You have an inventive imagination but that is most definitely not the case.
Would you consider JMM the best fighter out of Mexico of this generation over MAB and Morales?
At the moment, he is better than them, but I would rank Morales and Barrera slightly ahead of him overall because of their overall level of competition.
Clottey vs. Sugar Shane a possibility should Sugar take care of biz?
Interesting fight but I don't see it. Maybe.
Dan I was very glad to see Vernon beat Sergio from pillar to post. What did you think of the performance and what is the next logical step for Vernon?
I thought it was Vernon's best performance since the second Shane Mosley fight. I think it would make sense for him to fight the winner of next week's Mosley-Mayorga fight, especially if it's Mayorga.
Umm, why does Yahoo have Margarito vs. Clottey down for November 1?
This is ESPN. Ask them. You should be using my schedule anyway.
Is it close to that time where Vitali should be the bubble boy until Oct 11th?
How OUT (or IN) the Hall of Fame is Wladimir Klitschko?
Wlad has more work to do before I would consider voting for him for the Hall of Fame.
You forgot Guzman in your rankings...
No I didn't. He's out.
Any clue where Nate Campbell goes from here in terms of an opponent?
No idea. I know him and his people are trying to figure out what to do.
I'm a little hesitant to ask because I don't want to get banned, but now that it's happened, what's your opinion on the Golden Boy/Affliction agreement?
I have many thoughts and I will make them clear probably in a blog next week.
Guzman is a knucklehead!
I think it would be his biggest fight available but what would Vernon have to gain by fighting Mosley again? He already dominated him twice.
Which is why I said it made more sense if Mayorga won. I could also see Vernon maybe fighting Winky if there is no Abraham-Winky fight.
Thanks for clearing up the Williams issue. What about Chris John? As I remember, he was somewhere around #14 in your P4P rankings and is now completely gone. I can understand him dropping one place behind Williams but why clear the man out completely?
I dropped John because there are others more deserving because they have been more active against better fighters. John is an excellent fighter, but he has not fought in 10 months and it was not against a top opponent. If John were more active against better fighters, I would have left him in.
Any news on Z Gorres's next move? Love watching that dude
Very good possibility of a rematch with Montiel on Dec. 13 on the Macau card.
Why not Paul Williams-Vernon Forrest? Not enough money for Forrest?
They both have the same manager, which makes it unlikely.
Macho Man Dandy Savage after helping to bring us DLH v PacMan can you work some more of your magic and give the Freaks Kirkland v LC, once he gets out of timeout, on a BAD card in 09?
I'll see what I can do.
Is Daniel Jacobs the real deal? How big of a step up will he take on the Hatton-Malignaggi undercard?
He was a terrific amateur but I have no idea as a pro because he's fought nine nobodies who didn't even put up a remote fight. The stiff he smashed last week didn't want to fight and Jacobs faced better guys in the amateurs. But he is clearly talented.
Dan, how about a fight between Jose Luis Castillo and Joan Guzman at 180 pounds?
Perfect. Might have to make it 190.
Will u be at Pavlik/Hopkins?
I may be wrong but I think Winky said a while back, that he wouldnt fight Forrest because they are good friends?
Time has a way of changing things. When I spoke to Winky a couple of weeks ago he mentioned he would be interested in it. As they say, if it makes dollars, it makes sense.
Lets all thank that bum Guzman for saving Showtime money!!!
Why not Clottey-Williams on the Nov 29th BAD? Not enough money?
Is there a bigger jerk in the world then me?
Let me re-phrase that: J*** G*****.
First off I gotta give it up to Marquez this was in my book his best win of his career but now he needs to fight Cambell It would be a great fight and it needs to happen Juan can get the winner and as for my boy Casamayor he's had a hall of fame career but its time to retire
You ever hear of a period?
Dan, Do you really think that Judah will go down to 140? I think he would be a beast down there, where would you rank him amongst the best at 140 pounds right now?
When Judah approached me about that in Vegas last week he seemed awfully serious. I think he would do very well against the group of guys there.
Dan! Agree that if Guzman was really sorry for not making weight he would have fought the non-title fight?
Victor Ortiz looked very impressive in the undercard fight saturday night, whos a good lightweight fight for him? edwin valero maybe?
Ortiz is a junior welterweight. I'd like to see him eventually face another good young fighter like Tim Bradley, who has a title.
Castillo and Guzman could have a weight limit of 250 and they both would come in overweight.
Would you guys please give Joan Guzman a break?
Dan, what was up with the round-by-round coverage of the JMM/JC fight? After the 8th it was never refreshed until the fight was over. That, after Guzman pulling out, made for a bad night of boxing
I have no idea. I was at ringside in Vegas submitting my scores. If something happened in the office I am not aware of it. You should have just bough the ppv.
OK, Freaks -- the new blog is posted!
Imagine the trash talk for Zab against Paulie at 140
What's the best fight you've ever seen (live or tv)?
At ringside, definitely Corrales-Castillo 1. Hands down.
Between your chat and Jason Sobel's Ryder Cup blog, not much is going to get done today. Thank goodness my boss is going golfing this afternoon. LOL.
I can't find your schedule...can you point me to it?
Look at the top of the boxing page and you will see the word "schedule" as a button along the top. Click it and bookmark it. I update it all the time.
Do you think Oscar De La Hoya will stay retired after his fight Manny?
No. He has already said he was considering fighting on after that fight.
From a fellow KISS fan...was JMM HOF bound before to KO'd Casa?
In my book, yes. Now, it's automatic.
Dan! Thanks for the posting so many blogs! Any chance we see some verbal fireworks between Calzaghe and Jones. Seems like the firms press conference was pretty tame for a pair of skilled and seasoned trash talkers.
They're pros and they respect each other. But it could get a bit more snippy as the fight gets closer.
do you buy paulie comments about having just a few more fights because of his hand injury?
Yes. Paulie has had major hand problems and it probably won't last much longer.
Great story featuring POPO and him being worried after his fight with Corrales - Is Champion in recess the same as Champion Emeritus?
Shoot, I forgot chamoion in recess in the blog! Isn't it just ridiculous these sanctioning organization?
Dan, you said that Joe C was the best 168lb all-time... but does that mean he would beat any 168lber ever. Prime RJJ at that weight for ex.?
It means Joe is more accomplished than any other 168-pounder ever. However, if he faced a prime RJ, he would be in some trouble I believe. But Roy did not stay at super middle long enough to be considered the best ever there. It's like Sandy Koufax. Nobody considers him the best pitcher ever but they consider him certainly one of the top few of all-time. The reason is because his career was not long enough. Had he put together a few more big years he might be considered the greatest pitcher ever. Sorta like Jones and the super middle division.
Dan Rafael vs Joan guzman at cruiserweight limit?
Neither of us can make cruiser.
i heard that the Guzman-Catillo fight is for the World Boxing Empire belt
I was at the Houston fight two weeks ago and the crowd was great. Any idea if Diaz or GBP will hold another card there in the future?
Did you see the Arce fight from this week? I read that it was an excellent fight and that Arce had some rough moments.
Yes, it was a terrific fight. Arce was in some trouble. I think Arce is definitely on the downside of his career and ready to be drilled. But he always makes good fights. I love him.
I heard that Froch and Pascal is on, and the fight will be in UK in Dec. Who do you see winning this bout? -Should be fun as long as it last.
Yes, that fight was announced today. Dec. 6 in Froch's hometown of Nottingham, England. I like Froch in a pretty good fight.
how can you rate manny pacquiao #1 pound for pound and then rate him lower on the lightweight list? if he isn't #1 for his weight class, how in the heck is he #1 pound for pound? that doesn't make sense at all.
It does make sense if you had a clue about anything. Manny Pacquiao is 1-0 at lightweight against David Diaz. Marquez is 1-0 at lightweight against Casamayor, who was THE champ, but more important, a better fighter than Diaz. Therefore, while Manny is the best fighter overall in terms of everything taken into account, Marquez is No. 1 at 135 pounds based on him being THE champ and beating a top quality guy to become champ.
ray b, you are obviously a newbie or just not real quick on the up take.
For the Calzaghe-Jones 24/7 to be entertaining, they need to feature as much Enzo Calzaghe as possible.
Agreed, but they might want to consider subtitles. I joke that I have talked to Enzo a million times over the past couple of years and still not understood a single word he said.
Paulie vs Zab promotion would be fun, verbal warfare!! Make that fight at MSG!!! Man would be a great atmoshere
Guzman-Castillo for the unified IHOP/KFC used-to-be-a-lightweight championship!
Dan, great blog on Oscar Suarez! He will be missed. The story about you going to Freitas' suite after the Corrales fight brought a huge smile to my face.
It brought a smile to my face as I wrote it.
I'm pretty sure that you and I agree that Golden Boy Promotions has done a lot to make the sport better. But by setting up a JMM-Diaz fight instead of JMM-Campbell, when Campbell just beat Diaz, aren't they hurting the sport a little bit?
How does a great fight hurt the sport? First off, there is no done deal for either fight. Second, it makes sense for them to make a fight in which they don't have to deal with Don King or any other promoter. If a JMM-Diaz fight was just an awful match it would be a different story.
How about Guzman as an opponent for Haye?
Bravo! In the immortal words of Norman Chad, pay the man, Shirley.
How solid is the proposed fight in Egypt b/w Danny Williams and the White Buffalo? Seems like one of those proposed Macau cards that never materializes...
Well it was officially announced, so I guess it's on. That said, I won't be making flight reservations for Giza.
Anything new with Yuri Foreman?
He's fighting off TV under Pavlik-Hopkins.
Dan, can we get a quick mention of Roman Gonzalez, a new rising star, albeit one that most will never see unless he moves up in weight.
Yes, crushing power for a 105-pounder. I had him among my top 20 prospects at the end of last year and he just blew out Yutaka Niida for a strawweight title this week. Congrats to him.
Is there any insight who will Cotto face in his comeback ?
Nothing is solid but I have heard the name Sebastian Lujan brought up as a possible opponent.
I will only fight deceased fighters who are ranked in the WBO's Top Ten List
Dan, sorry I'm late. I'm going to the Telefutura card tonight at Stateline to see Kid Diamond (if he shows up) and Vanes Martirosyan. What do you make of this card?
Should be a solid card. Kid Diamond is in with rugged Javier Jauregui, who always is tough and Vanes is in with an undefeated (but untested) Medina. I will be watching.
I hear tha John McCain is a big boxing fan. Would his becoming President be a good development for the sport?
McCain is a huge boxing fan. I have seen him at fights from time to time and I have interviewed him a couple of times on boxing. But if he is elected president, I don't think it would make one bit of difference as far as boxing is concerned. As president, I think he'd have a lot more to worry about than boxing.
Dan, I'm getting a lil hungry over here...
i loved the JMM-Cass fight! who would have thought that Cass would be in 2 highly entertaining fights in 2008?
That is what happens when fighters get a little older and can't move as well as they once did. But I didn't think the fight with JMM was all that good. I mean it was fine and not awful or anything, but I think a lot of people will remember it being a lot better than it was because of the explosive ending.
When I am President, I will consolidate all of the sleazy, slimy sanctioning bodies into ONE sanctioning body!
If JMM/Diaz is made that will be a boring promotion. Both guys are too nice. Any chance GBP can somehow incorporate Casamayor to talk smack?
Buy or Sell: KISS' MTV Unplugged is one of the best KISS albums!
Sell. It's good but not top 5.
Wow, a Norman Chad reference--beautiful.
I've always been a huge fan and fortunately I get to read him in the Washington Post every week. I used to love when he wrote for The National back in the day when I was in college.
Sebastian Lujan, is that the guy Margarito beat up and split his right ear on ESPN few years ago? That was one of the most disgusting things I have seen in sports.
Yes, same guy.
How bout Haye fights me - - 60/40 I'll kick his a--
Sorry to beat a dead horse, but does it even pay to ask about Devon Alexander?
He is stuck where they have been -- with nothing. It's a shame. The kid is being wasted. Imagine what he could be if a Top Rank or Golden Boy promoted him?
DTM- any new news regarding The ghost guerrero? I am aware of the move-up in weight but haven't heard anything concrete. Grazzi.
His arbitration with his promoter, Dan Goossen, is going on right now.
Dan from looking at the television it looks as though the MGM Grand arena has a big black curtain that covers up the empty seats. I think it looks awful on the tv, is it worse looking in person?
At the fight last week, the upper portions of the MGM were curtained off. It looked fine in the arena and made it feel like a bigger crowd since people were not spread all over. There about 7,500 in the house and they were into it.
So, I guess Molitor/Caballero is on?
I emailed with Caballero's promoter, Leon Margules, today and asked him exactly that and the fight is indeed on he told me now that Caballero was safely through his fight today in Panama (winning by a KO1).
Wowl! even calling Mijares' decision to fight Darchynian over Montiel a "minor quibble" might have been a stretch! LOL
Yeah, you gotta come up with SOMETHING. I'm not against Mijares-Darchinyan at all. I absolutely love the fight.
Dan do you know if Showtime will send their ShoBox guys Charles and Farhood to Germany for the Peter-Klitschko fight or will their main guys Albert and Bernstein do a voiceover?
My understanding is that Steve Albert and Al Bernstein will call the fight off a monitor in Las Vegas, but that Steve Farhood will be in Germany to handle some interviews and such before and after the fight.
Any chance of Santos-Margartio next year if the CLottey fight falls through?
Why? Margarito is going to fight Cotto again most likely, There is no Margarito-Clottey fight anymore.
Andy Lee really dropped off the radar....whats new with him ?
I wish I knew. I ask Emanuel Steward about Andy when I see him and he doesn't seem to know right now either.
Dan, as a loyal freak I apologize for missing last weeks chat. I punished myself by finding Bruce Seldon's last fight online and watching it. Do I have any further penalties?
No, you have paid your debt to the Freak Society.
Is margo still going to take a tune up fight early next year?
Your take on Paulie getting stripped?
We gave it up because he had no choice. Typical sanctioning organization lunacy.
How much of a chance do you give Povetkin vs Wlad in Dec?
Dan, something tells me Haye will not fight Chambers. I think he is too slick and has a great chance to beat Haye. Golden Boy not going to spoil a potential cash cow that soon. Barrett is an easy mark.
This decision has nothing to do with Golden Boy. They have offered their opinion but Booth makes the call, so whatever happens with Haye, don't blame Golden Boy or credit them.
Did Don King give Showtime a refund? Did fans get refunds? or Did Don just reap a windfall from Guzman's actions?
No, Showtime simply didn't pay King the agreed upon number.
Tom deserves an award... even I couldn't watch Seldon's last fight.
Could you tell us what went through your mind in the 10th round of Corrales-Castillo 1?
I have to say that The Galaxy Warrior handled the Guzman situation surprisingly well. He's a likeable, smart fighter who is earning more of my respect every time out. Is he as aimiable a character behind the scenes?
Yes, Nate is a cool dude. My wife met him once and also liked him.
King Freak: Is lightweight now "THE" division in boxing, with all its additions, or would you still give the nod to the welters?
Lightweight has the better fights but welterweight has more stars.
Mike Tyson: finished, or gas left in the tank?
Banishment? Where are you when I need you?
WHAT is fernando vargas up to these days
It's sad for me to watch Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr. on PPV, not because he's no more than an average fighter, but because it shows how un-intelligent so many Mexican fans are... sooo many people really think he's good. When will this hype stop?!
That may be true, but the rest of that ppv card interests me. First, Chavez-Vanda 1 was a war and the rematch should be highly entertaining, which is important if you're spending money on ppv. But I also like the Donaire fight and look forward to seeing him again. Plus, you'll get Lamont Peterson, hopefully in a solid fight PLUS Arce, who is always in a good fight and the pro debut of a possible future star in Korobov. OK, so is it the best, most significant card ever? No. But could be one heck of a fun night of fights? Defintely, as our broadcast hero would say. I actually like the show.
Danaconda, Happy Friday Sir!!! I have to say that Marquez impressed me with the way he was able to adjust during the fight to counter Casamayor and knock him out. He did the same thing in the two fights with Pacquaio (especially the first one). Boxing-wise, he is one the smartest fighters I have ever watched....
I totally agree. He took away Casamayor's left hand after about the fourth round and that made all the difference in the world.
Danatello - who do you like in Tarver-Dawson? I watched some interviews with those guys and seems like Tarver is getting under his skin
I think they are annoying the hell out of each other and hopefully that means they will tee off on each other.
What's up with all the fights in my hometown lately?
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
Have at the idiots.
How about Vargas vs. Toney!! No training allowed, just eat for three months, and then show up and fight.
Has the undercard for the Pavlik/Hopkins fight been finalized yet? I'm a huge Pavlik fan so I'll be attending, but like you, I'm worried about the main event being a let down and am hoping for some solid earlier fights to soothe over my drained bank account.
Yes, go look at the sked.
How's this for irony? If Pacquiao and Calzaghe both lose (distinct possibilities), JM Marquez will be P4P number one at the end of the year.
It's certainly possible.
What did you think of Forrest trash talk after the Mora fight directed at both Mora and DLH?
It was kind of funny.
Hopefully this doesnt lead to banishment but when Ray Mercer hangs uo the gloves do you think he will get any consideration for the Hall of Fame? He was a gold medalist, Heavyweight title holder and had some great fights with the best in the division(Lewis) and overall tough as nails.
He will get zero consideration for the Hall of Fame. Based on what exactly should be considered? He was never a legit world champion, he lost his biggest fights other than Morrison.
Is there any chance of the Marquez/Casamayor being replayed on ESPN classic or another network?
As far as I know there are no replay plans for that fight. You shoulda bought the PPV.
dude - even i dont think i should be in the HOF
Steve gets a spot in my hall of fame
What would you think of Devon Alexander as Timothy Bradley's next defense? I think it would be an interesting fight between two young fighters still trying to make a name for themselves. I know Alexander is still raw and is being held hostage, but it seems like it's the only interesting match for Bradley at the moment.
I agree and Devon is No. 1 in the WBC's ratings (which is a joke), but he is not yet mandatory. So that fight could certainly happen eventually.
Dan - any truth to the Toney / Audley Harrison fight in England?
It's being discussed.
Is McGirt Jr. ready for Kid Chocolate? Seems like a pretty risky move by Buddy.
I think it's risky for both guys. McGirt, based on the Joval fight alone, has more experience than Quillin and has also been a little heavier in his fights. I think it's a pretty interesting undercard fight for BAD. I hope it happens.
Dan, what do Ricky Hatton and October have in common?
There's only one?
Is there anybody who has, recently, made a more ridiculous "I'm the best fighter in the world" claim than James Toney? Have you ever quoted anyone as saying that and looking even more ridiculous?
James is a clown.
In all fairness Mercer should have gotten the decision over Lennox.
But he didn't and I have watched that fight a thousand times and I always have Lewis winning 6-4.
Dan - any word on the Glen Johnsone and Shaun George proposed matchup?
Nothing new, but if it ever does happen it will be only after Glen's Nov. 11 fight.
Dan does Will the J.A. Santa Cruz Golden Boy card be shown on HBO Latino? Or is it just on some obscure channel no one gets?
It is going to be on the version of HBO that is only available in the Mexico and Latin America. While it could wind up on HBO Latino down the road perhaps, there are no plans for that as far as I am told.
Dan has Dibella mentioned Allan Greens name at all? Why not put him on the undercard of Lacy-Taylor and if he looks impressive have him fight the winner?
Yes, they are supposed to close that deal any time.
Guzman v. Luis Castillo at a weight to be named later + 10? Any takers?
Dan - big Hitman Hearns fan here - what do you think about his son, Hearns Jr.? started late in the game but has looked pretty good at times - do you agree or am i just biased?? Do you see him becoming a player in the division?
Considering he started so late, I think he can fight some. He's got good conditioning, good power and a great build for his division. From what I am told, he is a hard worker and in talking to him a few times, he seems pretty serious about trying to make the most of his tools. If he can beat a Duddy or maybe win a title, he could become a player, yes.
Dan, what do you know about Gamboa and Solis signing with Don King?
That pronouncement is way premature and not exactly true the way it has been written by some clueless folks.
Hey Dano, I think Malignaggi can beat Hatton! What do you think?
I think he's got a serious chance for the upset.
Hi Dan Just writing in to say that I dont really like you.
Wonderful. Thanks for the traffic though.
Have you ever had an altercation with a fighter who was not happy about what you wrote about him?
Never an actual altercation, but I've had plenty of them voice their displeasure to me. It goes with the territory.
What do you think of Trinidad saying he wants to have 2 fights next year?
No one's talking about me this week...I need the attention I'm coming out of retirement to fight J*** G***** he stole my asterisks!!!
Who's a bigger star in the UK...Hatton or Calz?
Klitschko seems to be one of the few champions not having constant sanctioning org drama. How do the prospects look for Wlad to unify any more titles, if/when Potevkin goes his way?
He doesn't have issues because his last fight was a mandatory and his next fight is a mandatory. After Povetkin, he ought to be free and clear for at least one optional against the biggest name out there, perhaps a unification with Valuev.
Dan - I get mad sometimes because I have nobody to talk to about boxing, no real fans out here, where I work, my family does a little, but I always have to inform them about bouts. I talk boxing but nobody gets it. Do I need to move from South Dakota? This chat-room makes me happy!
Yes, move. Move now.
Dan The Man..Hope youre weekend is off to a great start. Can you please answer a question thats been on my mind lately. What are your opinions on Johnny Tapia's overall career. I know he had his demons but he was an awesome fighter. Can you pelase assess his career please? Thanks
Johnny was a terrific fighter. He had a lot of talent despite his demons. Imagine how good he could have been had he always been clean and not been suspended like he was? I think Johnny is a HOFer.
To expand on Mike A's question, your latest near altercation was with the Judahs? Or have you had another since?
I never had an altercation with the Judahs. If they were peeved by what I wrote they never expressed it to me. In fact, I have spoken to Judah several times since that blog I wrote that he was supposedly upset by and it has never been an issue.
Do you have any tape? I want to hang up a poster of the world's #1 cruiserweight, Steve "USS" Cunningham on my wall
I figured it would go on your ceiling.
Does RJJ move back into your top 10 pound for pound if he beats Calzaghe? Top 5 if he destroys him?
I would think so, of course.
Can an action fighter like Arturo Gatti get into the HOF based on popularity and being involved in so many fights of the year?
Gatti, as we have discussed here many times, has a very good chance to be elected.
Who wasted more talent Golota, Mercer or Ricardo Williams?
Williams. At least those other guys were top 10 and fought some big fights.
Dan, ESPN should give you a show on the website as they have with the other sport...know anyone else that gets 2 hours of hits just to post a message?
Dan TMNT Raphael! On a scale of 1-10 what do you think of the chances of a PAV vs Margarito fight by the end of next year>
I think we've got three Versus shows announced--will there be more before the end of the year. Thanks
Yes, I expect a few more.
Dan - you once said that David Haye was the most ripped fighter today - after seeing his fight last week, i think Bradley is the guy - he's ripped to shreds!
Bradley is similar. Both could be body builders.
I know Julio's decision was *suspect*, but I actually think his fight against Dzindzurik can be very very good. Will you have a way to watch it?
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the grounded Love Child. I think it could be good also, but that was not the point of what I wrote.
Is JMM your fighter of the year so far?
I cannot describe the sense of relief, we as a city feel after hearing that Oscar has woken up. We continue to pray for his and his family's wellbeing.
Do you think andre berto will step up and fight the big boys at welterweight in 2009 or will he continue to fight oppenents that aren't really dangerous? Josh Clottey called him out, will he fight him?
That would be an interesting fight. I would like to see Berto fight any top 10 opponent if he beats Forbes. He could fight a Collazo, Mosley, Clottey, anyone on that level.
"I figured it would go on your ceiling." Wow. Disturbing image, there, Dan.
Tell it to stalker Marc, not me.
Hey DAn what do u make of prospects Erisandy Lara, Matvey Korobov, Demetrius Andrade, Danny Garcia & Danny Jacobs? All future world champions? Who do you rate the most?
Shows you that there is a lot of good young talent in boxing that just needs to be nurtured. I saw Lara's pro debut and his quick KO the other day. Good prospect, obviously talented. Andrade is the best of the pro prospects off the US Olympics team and I think he has a chance to be special. He's only 21. Jacobs and Garcia are two of the best guys who didn't make the Olympics team and are also very young, like 20 or 21. If handled properly, they have huge potential. Korobov has the amateur pedigree -- two-time world amateur champ, pro, physical style and a great promoter in Top Rank that knows how to build fighters and stars.
Just burned the Holyfield/Bowe, Morales/Barrera and Marquez/Vazquez trilogies to DVD. I am a happy freak.
Danimal, I know you said the 23rd for DLH tix, but I just called the MGM, they have no official news. Will there be a public ticket sale, or will this be another dlh/pbf fiasco?
Unfortunately, I don't expect too many tix to be available to the public, so it could be a bit of a fiasco.
Dan what slows down production on a Friday your chat or the NCAA tournament?
Manny is getting tapes of Oscar/Pernell and Oscar/Camacho. I can see Pernell but Camacho did nothing in that fight. How will that help Manny?
I think it is simply to get another view of how Oscar faced a southpaw.
Yeah, my production at work takes a bit of a drop Friday mornings. Thanks Dan.
i continue to be amazed with how good a fighter Sugar Shane is - still fast, great shape, chin - have you seen him slow down at all? Do you think he can become a top P4P figher again or is he just a high quality "gatekeeper" at this stage in teh game?
I think he has slowed down some, sure. But that doesn't mean he is not still an outstanding fighter.
Will you be attending the final Yankee Stadium game?
Only if you give me tickets.
OK, Freaks, thanks for the chat today. Hope you get a chance to check out the notebook and all the blogs and rankings this week. Report back here next week. Peace.
