Good afternoon all. We may not be able to stop time like Hiro, but we can take an hour out of our day to try and answer your fantasy football questions... Let's get this show on the road, shall we?
Hi A.J., LLoyd or Wes Welker for the rest of the season? thanks
I still like Welker. I know Cassell is not Tom Brady -he might not even be Greg Brady. But Welker's a possession receiver, and those guys are able to perform with lesser QB's who may have trouble with long downfield passes.
for my flex spot i am torn between forte, and chad johnson. Chad has a nice match up where as forte is going againts the birds.
Normally, I go with the RB over the WR in a flex since the # of touches is a bit more guaranteed. However, this matchup for Forte is pretty tough and if 85 is ever going to wake up, it'll be against the Browns. I'm going with Chad.
Since I can't stop time, and time is running out, should I drop Selvin Young to pick up Engram, I think this is my last change?
Indeed, this may be your last chance to get Engram, and if you have enough depth at RB, I'd take the chance on picking either he or Branch up now before the word comes down to the less-prepared owners that they may be in the lineup in Week 5. Any Broncos RB is always a tough start anyway since they could get 20 or 3 carries on the coach's whim.
AJ - Do you agree with this logic...with FWP out, Pittsburg will throw a lot more, so I should start Santonio at the flex instead of McGahee or Driver?
No, I don't. Even assuming Big Ben was 100 percent, you wouldn't want him throwing 30 times in a game. It's not his strength. The game plan won't change with Mendenhall in, it just won't be as effective. I'd go with Driver.
I'm planning ahead for a bye week issue in week 5 and Toomer is available. Do you like him knowing that Plaxico will be suspended that game? Thanks.
In general, Toomer is always going to get targets because Eli does like to throw to him. Steve Smith may be the guy that benefits the most from Plax's absence though. I like his upside a lot more. And this of course assumes the suspension stands, which may not after he files his grievance.
Please AJ, need some advice for a league veto situation. I offered Kurt Warner(backup QB) for Braylon Edwards and the trade was accepted. The league members vetoed this trade, citing unfair. Is this really lopsided? Advice?
It doesn't really matter what I think, because you're not going to convince the veto power holders that it is. From a fantasy standpoint, I think by Week 17, this could go either way, which makes it a reasonable deal to allow... even if I personally wouldn't take Warner for Edwards on its face. However, once you let the inmates run the asylum, why even bother to lock the doors?
Who should I drop for the Ravens D/ST? The Pats D/ST, Bobby Engram, or Hightower?
I'd drop the Pats D. Once you've had your defense's bye week, there's no need to have a second one on your roster.
Rest of the year? Matt Jones or Deion Branch
Branch. Obviously there is an injury risk there, but Porter is coming back to Jax eventually, and the Jags are a more run-oriented team than Seattle at heart.
Do you see Torry Holt's value/production changing with Green behind center?
Not really. It's not like Bulger wasn't looking for him. It's just that with little in the way of secondary options downfield, defenses can double Holt and take him out of the mix. Plus the O-line isn't suddenly improving either and Green isn't exactly fleet of foot.
Mr. Mass I'd like your opinion if you would. I'm in my first year as a league commissioner and have decided to award five bonus points for any QB that throws for 350 or more yards, and RB that rushes for 200 or more yards, and any WR that catches for 150 or more yards. Do you like bonus points or do you think I've hurt the integrity of the league?
Many leagues play with bonus points, and I used to do so as well, but I've found that the gap between the haves and have nots is already so great, why exacerbate things by giving the great performances even more weight?
Hey AJ, Jake Delhomme or Trent Edwards this week. Thanks
I like Trent this week against possibly the worst pass defense in the league. Of course losing Parrish hurts, but I think Reed steps in and does a good enough job.
Pick 3: MBIII, DMC, Felix Jones, Selvin Young, Hightower or P.Thomas
MB3 and DMC are easy choices. For the third, I might go for the upside of Felix. Even though he's less of a guarantee, he can also get you the chance of a return score. I don't usually like starting 2 backs form the same team, but in this case I would.
Better flex option: Holt or Felix Jones?....(return yards count)
In this case, there's no question I go Felix.
Hey AJ, would you start chester taylor or vincent jackson in a flex spot this week? If you have flex rankings somewhere that I could look at, I withdraw my question.
I'd start Jackson. In weeks where there's talk of AP not going, then you can consider Taylor, but this isn't one of those weeks.
AJ, should I go ahead and pick up Brady Quinn? Or just wait around? He has been picked up in 2 of my leagues, but still out there in my money league!
Unless it is a keeper league, I don't see any benefit of having Quinn this season. Yes, he may take over the reins, but I don't think he'd be worth starting over most NFL QB's most of the time.
If the Jets make it to the AFC Championship game and lose, do you see Favre returning for another year? Does he stay with the J-E-T-S if he comes back?
I know this is a fantasy football chat, but this is downright delusional. How about we watch the Jets get to .500 before we start talking playoffs, let alone title games.
who to start for this week, Chris Johnson, Felix Jones, or McClain?
Chris Johnson, and it's not even close is my mind.
Hello AJ, Not great choices but still need some help here. For a #2 running back this week should I go with Jonathan Stewart or Pierre Thomas? And for reciever Antonio Bryant or Andre Johnson? Thanks.
Pierre Thomas has been awful, and I can't imagine Deuce doesn't start eating into his carries this week. I go Stewart. And even though Bryant has been doing well, I have to go Andre if I have him.
Start Felix Jones now that SJax is missing practice with a sore groin ?
I don't worry about missed practices... that's going to be more and more common as teams simply don't want to overwork their better players during the season. I still start Jackson, though it's sadly, not a dumb question to ask anymore.
How bad is McNabb's injury, should I start Rivers instead.
McNabb should play. He says it's hurting him a bit, which does raise concern b/c usually players tend to downplay when they are hurt... but because the Eagles play late and you won't have a chance to swap out, you might want to go with Rivers.
AJ, if you had your pick, are you grabbing Engram or Branch? I am thinking of dropping Jamaal Charles for one of them. Not worth it to drop NYG and try to grab both right?
If I only pick one, and assuming both come back, I go with Engram. The rationale being that Branch is the "No. 1" and will get the most defensive attention, but may not be fully recovered enough to overcome that. But as I've said before, you don't need two defenses after one has had their bye, so if you have NYG D, then why not keep them and cut the other after this week?
TRADE>>I get Gore and TO and give up Turner, Housh, and Warner. I have Cutler.
I think I pass on that one, though it's a toughie. It hinges on whether or not I think TO will be better than TJ, and I am not sure I believe that to be the case once fantasy playoffs come around.
Due to the bye week and an injuries to FWP and Felix Jones I need to grab a rb in a shallow league. Do I get Fred Taylor or Slaton?
I like Taylor this week. Watching him last week, it appeared he was ready to break out. He has a hand issue, but that shouldn't effect his running ability.
AJ, I have willie Parker and Hightower buried on my bench. Edge's Owner happens to have Mendehall. Would a straight up trade for the rookies be fair?
Of course it would, but the time to have made this deal was before FWP got hurt. If I were him I'd ask for something extra in the deal since you're the desperate one.
Bye week fill-in... Lance Moore, Meachem or Randel El ? PPR league
I like Randle El. Now it's certainly likely that either Moore or Meachem outperforms Antwaan. However, Bress spreads it around so much, that it's hard to predict which one that will be, and you could just as easily get skunked. El will get you in the 4-6 catch range. I'd take the sure thing here.
Hi AJ! Commissioner's Court type question - how common is it for waiver orders to reset weekly based on a worst-to-first standings situation? I have someone in my league complaining because it is set up this way (it was made very clear in the league rules that's how it would be). He says that "no other league does it that way." Thanks :)
I won't claim to know the percentages, but I can without a doubt tell him that he's wrong in his claim. I have always run my league with a once a week pickup based on the reverse order of the current standings. And if the rules were there and he didn't like it, he didn't have to play.
What do you think of Willie Parker going forward? Is he going to platoon with Mendenhall or still be the primary back when healthy?
Unless Rashard suddenly goes for 250 yards this week, FWP will be the primary and near exclusive back when healthy.
I play in four leagues and everyone, the waivers are claimed worst to first.
There's another brick in this completely unscientific wall we're building here.
With Parker out, would you start Ravens D over Vikings D?
With Parker in, I'm starting Ravens D over Titans D, so....
I mean Vikings D versus the Titans.
AJ, what do you think is better? Resetting every week on standings or just a flowing priority that only shifts when people make claims?
It's not a question of better... and the rule can't be taken alone. My league is a dynasty league with rosters being retained each year that only allows at most two waiver moves a week. In this system, doing it based on standings works for us. If people like having the power to hold on to the top spot and use it as a bargaining chip, then by all means play that way.
AJ, I dont mean to nit pick...well actually I do. But it seems like all you have been aswering are FWP and Felix Jones questions. should I start Forte or E Graham this week?
I can only answer what is being asked, and these are the Q's that are currently flooding the mailbag. I don't particularly like either back this week, but I would start Graham.
Need some help resolving a conflict: guy in our league had Brees, Cutler, and Warner. Traded Cutler for Braylon, fine. Another guy has Derek Anderson, and idiotically traded Stephen Jackson (who he "wasn't playing anyway") for Warner. They claim its totally fair, he needs one and Jackson's been bad, but come on, how dominant of a team should a guy be able to compile by trading backups? Veto that trade?
I'm sorry... where were you when he drafted these backups? Didn't you have just as much chance to build your team this way. If you're going to allow trades, then you can't be upset when an owner makes good ones. Trades shouldn't be judged on whether or not a good team is getting better by it, but if it is being proposed fairly, and both owners honestly think they are going to come out ahead. If you veto this, it's only out of jealousy.
AJ, I'm thin at QB after losing Brady in a 12 team league. Who would you pick up and start this week? Orton, Huard, Collins, Ryan, Flacco or Green?
I'd take a flyer on Huard. None of these guys is particularly appealing, but Denver has been known to give up some passing yards.
AJ, I'm in a prety deep league and just traded Heath Miller. Who would you fill the TE vacancy with, Dustin Keller or Owen Danniels? Thanks
I'd go with Keller. Favre do like him the TE's.
Hi AJ. I know this is a football chat, but I got a quick yes or no baseball question please, I beg you. A guy in my ESPN baseball league has one start left before hitting the limit(but he hasn't noticed). He's got 5 guys starting today, among them Kazmir. Since TB's game is the earliest, would his Kazmir start be the one that counts towards his stats?
It is my understanding that all starts for the day will count if he is under the limit at the start of the day.
This is kind of a follow-up to John's question. Have you ever seen someone draft all the best players available with complete disregard to their positions so that they could just trade them to build their team later? I've always wondered if that could somehow work, but I'm pretty sure nobody would trade with me out of spite.
That's the game of chicken you play when you go Round 1; Brady - Round 2; Peyton - Round 3; Romo. However, in most cases, if you draft guys who end up in the Top 10 as a big surprise (say RBs of Chris Johnson, Michael Turner, Steve Slaton after selecting LT) then there probably won't be a conspiracy to stop your evil plans, since there weren't any.
AJ...PLEASE!!!! O'Sullivan or Palmer this week? Eddie Royal or Lee Evans??
JT and Lee for me, please.
quick hit on maroney. what's his deal? good buy low prospect?
I don't want him. Sammy Morris was looking like the big winner in that race anyways, when both were healthy.
Which 2 rb's to I start? Peterson (Tenn), Forte (Phil), Perry (Cleveland), or Mcgahee (Pit). I really appreciate the help Mr. Mass
You always start AP. I'd go with Perry second.
Would you start an injured Big Ben with Parker out, or Jason Campbell this week?
Felix jones or Micheal Turner this week?
Welker and Roy Williams dropped in my league! Would you drop Berrian and Morris to pick them up?
Yes and yes.
Titans or Steelers DEF/SPT this week?
That's a tough call. I don't think you can go wrong either way, but I'd lean towards Tennessee simply b/c Steelers may not be able to move the ball themselves and the D might get overworked.
If Ocho Cinco goes off this week, I'm going to try to deal him for the disappointing Braylon Edwards. Good move?
So you want to trade the guy who seems to have turned things around for the guy who hasn't? I'm not sure I buy the logic there, Rich. Sorry.
Hey AJ, What bye week QB do you like in Week 10 for Romo based on their matchups and potential? Aloha!
If I knew who would still be healthy in Week 10, I'd be a very rich man, my friend. I'm all for planning ahead, but that's a bit much.
Thanks for the Q's guys... that's all we've got today. Another chat rolls your way at 3pm. Good luck, and we'll see you the next time on Villa Allegre!
