How do you think the Saints will fare following the next 3 straight home games with so many starters out with injuries/suspensions?
They've got to get through the home stand with at least two wins because they've got a brutal stretch coming up after that. And they have to start getting some of the injured guys back.
How can so many people put so much faith in teams like tampa(which has gotten grey in the beard), New Orleans (which has zero defense even w/o injuries) and Carolina (a team that has constantly choked when proclaimed to be the best in the division as well as the NFC), yet the falcons are too young and inexperienced to do anything supposedly. You can temper expectations all you want with statemtns like, "after last year" or "they played poor teams". But don't good teams beat teams that are worse than them and don't good teams forget about what they did last year (win or lose) why all the negativity. The falcons are scoring more than anyone in the division and have the 9th best defense in the league, just give them some credit, take it week by week and I think you wil be surprised, or do you think I am just a homer?
I think the Falcons are progressing and Smith will prove to be a very good coach. But it's still early. You can't call them good or bad yet. If they win Sunday, that could change in a hurry.
How do you feel about Reggie Bush so far and his quest for 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards?
He's great as a receiver, but I'm not sure about the running part of it yet.
Do you think that Rich McKay of the Falcons could end up in Detroit as their GM? If so will he try to bring Vick their in 09 if he is reinstated?
Excellent question. Been wondering that about McKay myself. It's at least possible. As far as Vick, I don't think McKay would sign him.
do u think the saints can still win thenfc south
Going to be very tough.
First and foremost thoughts and prayers are surrounding Tampa Bay for Matt Bryant and family, what a tragic day. Here is my question: Why is Gruden so afraid to get rid of Garcia, he is obviously not himself this year, and he has two great QB's on staff with an aspiring young rookie, trade him to a team that needs a QB and get a talent or draft pick?
You may hear more on that as the trade deadline gets closer. I'd sure try to get something for him.
Hey Pat, First off, I love the Blog. Do you think Gross will be able to handle Abraham? and likewise do you think rookie Baker will be able to handle Peppers and Co. this Sunday?
Gross is solid and the Panthers will give him help. But Falcons have been moving Abraham around a lot. I'd be more worried about when he moves to the other side and goes against Otah. As far as Baker, I'm not even sure he'll play. Could be Todd Weiner. Either way, it could be an opportunity for Peppers to have a big game.
With all of the bad Saints news out there, let's have a little fun. So Pat, do you yield to a two part question? 1) Did the Saints sign and subsequently cut Joey Harrington just to crush his spirit? 2) Is it true that Jamar Nesbit accidentally picked up Hollis Thomas' asthma inhaler in the locker room?
LOL. Actually, I think they just needed a roster spot to get a tight end. I'm not sure about the Nesbit thing.
how impressive is the NFC south? they are 7-5 i think 2nd best in the nfl. all buc, panthers and falcon are 2-1. dont you think that the nfc south now is one of the difficult divison to read? since all team except maybe the falcons have a shot at the division title? thanks
I think it's a very good division. I also think whoever wins it has a chance to go far in the postseason because the NFC East teams are going to beat each other up.
Will Carolina be able to stop the overhyped Michael Turner?
He's not overhyped. But I think Carolina's D will keep him in check and put the game into Matt Ryan's hands.
Do you think the Panthers will try to get Jonathan Stewart more involved in the offense this week? I understand the decision to start Williams, but Stewart is just too good to only get 7 carries in a game.
I would hope so. They only ran the ball five times in the second half last week. That's not Fox's style.
Thanks for answering my previous question. What do you think the chances of the bucs dealing cadillac williams if graham and dunn keep up their impressive work?
They wouldn't get anything for him right now. I don't think you'll see him on field until 2009.
Is this Rhonde Barber's last year in Tampa Bay?
Could very well be. He didn't look good last week and they've got high hopes for Talib.
Can the Bucs get their running game on track this week and contain Rodgers and Green Bay?
What do you think the bucs chances are against GB, i think they have a better shot than most people would think, it helps with Al harris out.
Definitely have a chance. They're playing well and it's at home.
Are the Panthers utilizing Peppers talents to their maximum? I see some of the schemes run in Philly and Pitt with constant blitzing and pressure and wonder what he could do in that scheme. I hear Abraham is moved along the line according to matchup, I hear Mario Williams rushes from the stand up position sometimes, I just find the Panthers to be costing a supremely gifted player the opportunity to excel. Hes constantly stuck in double teams and chip blocks with no supporting rush. My real question when people mention resigning Julius is why would he want to?
Very good point at the end. When Pep was asked about staying in Carolina in training camp, he left the door open. They haven't used him right and they no longer have a lot of talent around him to reduce the double teams.
Pep is still listed at 6'7 283, the same as a rookie, he looks much bigger, what do you think he's playing at?
Saw him in person the last two weeks. He's definitely bigger than he's been. I think the 283 was always a little high compared to reality in the past. But I'd guess he's 285 or 290 now.
Is it me or is Sean Payton making some bad play calls?
Yes, no doubt on that. Three runs before the missed field goal last week and can think of several other instances.
Pat, I'm lookin' at the rest of the Panthers' schedule. Am I crazy, or are they going to have at LEAST 11 wins?
It's possible. But it's only Week 4. Lots of things can happen.
I think Michael Clayton quietly had a big game last week. Has he turned it around, and will Gruden sart to create more opportunities for him even if/when Galloway comes back?
I think you'll see more of Clayton. He's out of Gruden's doghouse. I'm not sure if Galloway has much left.
Watching the Dolphins use the direct snap to perfection against the Patriots, I couldn't help but think of the Panthers game a couple of years ago against the Falcons where Deanglo Williams took a lot of direct snaps in the win. My question is, in retrospect, it does seem Dan Henning is a lot more willing to be creative than he got the reputation for being here. Does John Fox have the ultimate say over every offensive play and/or what percentage of the time do you think he overrides the offensive coordinator?
The o-coordinator is an extension of Fox. Not saying Fox calls the plays, but the coordinator is at the mercy of his philosophy and that's a conservative philosophy.
Pat, do you think I should retire and forget the whole "most wins" thing or should I just keel over on the sideline mid-game one of these days? I'm still thinking the latter.
Win on Saturday and then retire.
Any word on if Robert Meachem is healthy? There's always spotty information on him and im wondering why this guy cant step up and be another target for Brees.
Healthy as far as I know. If he's ever going to produce, now's his chance.
What do you make of getting Travelle Wharton back, and the effect of the OL penalties the panthers have had in the previous weeks? If the line starts to work together better do you expect to see more Fox style running the football or has the penalties been inconsequential to the way we played last week.
Yes, they'll go back to Fox's style. Wharton should help stabilize the o-line.
I would fly down to Atlanta and help McKay pack if he was willing to come up here and take over the Lions.
Like I said, I think it's a long shot, but don't rule it out. He's the best guy out there and the Lions should go after him. Not sure if he'd go there, though.
As much as everyone likes Delhomme "fire" do people outside of NC just see him as a whiner? Its tiring to see him throw up his hands after every penalty, and run up to every official.
Yep, but that emotional personality is part of what makes him good in the good times. Think back to the days of having a robot like Chris Weinke.
If you put the Panther defensive players in a D scheme that's featured in Pitt or Philly and that defense will be unstoppable.
Agreed. Also, memo to the folks asking for fantasy advice or questions on other divisions, this is an NFC South chat.
The Bucs are in the middle of a brutal stretch of good opponents. How do you see them playing out through October against GB, then Denver, then Carolina, Seattle, then finish with Dallas at the end of October?
If they can go 2-2 in the stretch you mentioned, they'll be in very good shape.
Wow, Steve Smith comes back from suspension and there still isnt a question about him?? What happened to him on Sunday? He came out blazing the first 17 minutes of the game and then only registered one catch the rest of the way.
Vikings stopped the run and used a corner and a safety on Smith just about all the time.
wow . . so if this guy is healthy, why is such a high draft pick (with speed) been such a bust? I know he had all offseason last year to learn the offense. Any excuses from the Saints?
There's no excuse if he doesn't step up in the next couple games with all the injuries they've got.
Cant the saints trade a few draft picks and a pack of diapers to the chiefs for LJ? Could you imagine that offense?
I'd sure try it if I were in their shoes.
When will I realize that there are other routes other than "going long" for Steve Smith to run?
Yep, try the slant, John. Seems like that works for a lot of teams, but I've almost never seen you use it!
Uh Pat... Did you notice that McKay's tenure as GM in Atlanta was a total mess? Let's see... Ed Hartwell, Jason Webster, Jimmy Williams, Jammal Anderson... the list goes on and on. If he's the best GM out there then the Lions should fold up the tent.
Think that tent's been folded for a long time. You can't put that whole mess on McKay. Yes, he made some mistakes, but he's also made lots of good moves in his career.
Any update on Colston?
Still hearing right around the London game. They've got the bye right after that, so that could factor in.
Where does Jeff Garcia go from here?
Minnesota? Anywhere but with Gruden.
And McKay's worst move of all -- BOBBY PETRINO!!
I'll give you that one.
Pat, Is Peppers a "leader" on the team this year? or is Beason and Harris enough? I heard last year he didnt step up to take leadership.
Beason and Harris are the leaders. Pep is Pep. He's a very quiet guy and keeps to himself.
Thoughts on Curtis Lofton So far? Not much attention, but a pretty good Mike and a bruiser
Yes, he's been solid and will only get better.
Can they call me clinically insane yet?
I think some people have done that already.
Just curious, i'm a Saints fan living in Kansas City, and i've personally seen first hand how disruptive the guy is (and also seen his meteoric decline) why on earth would it be in the Saints interest to give up precious Draft picks to pick up LJ? I personally woudl rather jump off a bridge than see LJ in the black and gold!
Tell that to Saints fans. Well, you just did. Thanks.
What have you heard about how Shockey is fitting in with NO as far as his personality.
Personality is fine. But they need him to stay on the field.
Do you think Antonio Bryant will be the #1 target for Griese?
Yes, there's not a lot of other choices.
I don't get all the credit the Panther coaching staff--Fox included--gets. If you take the players that team has had the last 5 or 6 years and you stick them with an AFC coaching philosophy (Pittsburgh, NE, Indy, etc) they would be comparable to the Colts and Patriots' recent successes. Win or lose this year, we NEED Cowher next year.
Not disagreeing, but would Cowher have even gone 7-9 without Delhomme last year.
How does Matt Ryan grade out compared to Jamarcus Russell - It seems to my untrained eye that Ryan is a far more polished prospect and more of a natural leader. Yea his arm is not as strong, but Payton and Brady do not have rifles and are top QB's and first ballot hall of famers! thanks in advance..
Yes, Ryan's got intangibles. Like everything I've seen from him so far.
Some one touched on the Matt Bryant situation earlier... is he going to play Sunday? If not, what are they going to do?
Still waiting to hear. If he wants to play, he plays. If not, Bucs will bring in a kicker. Shane Andrus is one name I've heard.
me and kenny chesney are brothers seperated at birth what are your thoughts?
Kenny's having a better year than you.
What makes Cowher so great????? Everyone has spoken about him with reverence since he retired like he's Vince Lombardi or something...It took him 16 years to win Super Bowl!
I'll just throw this one out there for all the Cowher fans.
Do I really have a shot at coming back? Why would anyone really want to introduce this plague called Vick to their franchise?
The UFL is starting play next spring.
question to pat yassinkas at 1.40 pm hi pat can bucs stop denver marshall next sunday
Nobody's been able to stop Marshall so far. Not sure anyone will.
As regards to Panther coaching, wouldn't a good GM and coach have a good back up just in case Delhomme did go out? Last year he lost against the Falcons!!!
Yep, they tried that route. They paid David Carr a lot of money and he was a disaster.
No need, I'm surrounded by them up here!
Understand. I grew up in PA.
Im concerned with tampa's secondary this weekend, moreso with R. Barber. Does he look as though he may be slowing do to you or did it just seem so because it was often against the bears he was beat.
When you're getting beat by Kyle Orton, I think you should be concearned.
How do you think the Saints passing game will fair against the Niners defense, considering all the injuries?
15 short passes to Reggie Bush is the only thing you can count on. Maybe Meachem finally will step up.
Pat, help me out with this one..who would you start? D. Williams vs 23rd rushing Falcon Defense OR Edge James vs 8th rushing Jets Defense Thanks!
Go with DeAngelo.
Why am i not rated well in madden only 1 td was scored on me last year? I look like lil wayne
Don't know Mike. I don't have Madden. But I'm glad to see you back on the field.
Any particular reason why the Saints didn't sign Shaun Alexander on his first visit, and is there any chance he could come now with the injuries the team has had?
If they didn't sign him then, they must think he doesn't have anything left. They've already got one guy that fits into that category.
How good does Oregon State beating USC make PSU look! JoePa will go out a national champion unless they get jobbed like they did in 93.
Agreed. You're my new favorite reader!!!
Come back? What do you think Pat?
One word: Cleveland.
Pat, have you heard if there is anything behind the scenes going on between Sean Payton and Duece. His strange refusal to use Duece in short yardage situations lends itself to some sort of personal discord between the two.
No, I really don't think it's anything personal. I think they just believe that Deuce isn't ready to contribute. Not sure if he ever will be again.
Which NFL team will take a flyer on Michael Vick? Could it be Weird AL in Oakland? Or will any team take a chance on that PR nightmare?
That would be the only team. I truly think he ends up in the new UFL.
Will aaron brooks or joe horn ever find a team?
Nice not to be preparing to watch Vick run all over us this week!
That's what Mike Trgovac said, too.
Pat, you need help with the chat or a blog? As you might've heard, I don't really have anything to do right now.
You might be a candidate to coach the Raiders.
For the Bucs - Is Talib ready to go this Sunday? We'll need him with the GB receivers!
Yes, I think so. And, yes, the Bucs need him.
PY I thought I was your favorite reader?
You're my favorite Falcons fan. But I've also got to take care of Penn State folks!
Nice not to be preparing to watch DHall throw the game away for us!
Bet Steve Smith still wishes Hall was around.
would you start at the flex M. Muhhamed or J. Stewart or A. Bryant Keep in mind - 1 pt for 10 yds / 1 pt PPR
Just a hunch: Stewart.
Will there be a sweet brees across new orleans sunday at 3:00?
You better hope so. If they lose that game, they're in big trouble.
Given the plethora of injuries in New Orleands, any chance the Saints would bring me in as the strength and conditioning coach?
Worth a try.
Are there any asian players in the nfl?
I don't have time to look it up right now. But I know the Falcons have a receiver from Japan on their practice squad.
Even though it is only 3 games into the season, what are you thoughts on the Panthers trading a future 1st round pick for the Eagles 1st rounder last year? Will Otah make the deal worth it or will Fox regret it?
So far, Otah's blocked very well. He's had some penalties, but that's understandable. I think he'll work out nicely. He better. Fox and Hurney gambled their future on that pick and they have to win this year.
Payton must believe Deuce is washed up. How else can you explain his refusal to use him in goal line situations. More eggregious than that in my opinion, is not using Bush in those situations in favor of Pierre Thomas. Both are about 200 pounds, neither will move the pile, but Bush has the ability to go over the top and can at least keep defenses honest with his ability to get to the edge. Thomas brings nothing to the table in those situations. Yet Payton keeps using him, and losing games. Infuriating.
Pat, can you thank the lions for getting OSU riled up to beat the ______ (insert own adjective) trojans? What's wrong with the Bucs D? They are letting up too many yards per game compared to a typical Kiffin D (and no I'm not talking about Lane's D against Al trying to kick him out the door).
I'm starting to wonder if age is catching up to Bucs D.
Will the bucs ever draft a franchise QB or will they keep bringing in the league castouts.
The latter, as long as Gruden's around.
The Bucs have spent high draft picks (Joseph, Trueblood, and Sears) or lots of cash (Faine) everywhere on the O-Line except left tackle. Do you see the Bucs going after one early in next years draft?
Yes, that's their most glaring need. Donald Penn's not a long-term answer.
When if ever does Stewart start to get the majority of the carries for CAR? He certainly looks like the better back to me.
Me too, but Fox always gives priority to the veteran. I'm not agreeing with it. I'm just pointing out the fact.
Is DHall the most over-rated players in the NFL still??? I think people now know he's an average corner at best. 70 Million he got? Was that the worst trade/FA aquisition in the last 10 years?
Yep, I'll go with you on that.
I just picked up Antonio Bryant and dropped Galloway... good move?
DO you not think Josh Johnson has potential to be a long term franchise QB in Tampa?
No, I haven't seen much out of him yet. Maybe I'm wrong and maybe he develops into something, but he didn't show much in training camp.
Cratyon or P. Thomas as a flex option this weekend, PY?!
Pat, here is a scenario, Kiffen gets canned and goes to K.C and Davis hires Edwards who is hired two days earlier.......
No, no coach in his right mind would go to Oakland.
Will Cadillac ever be the same running back he was his rookie year and his injury?
We'll have to wait and see and I think we'll have to wait until 2009.
If I can make it back to Tampa for 1 home game this year - which one should I go to?
Sunday against the Packers might be short notice. How 'bout Oct. 12 vs. Carolina?
I have Devery Henderson. I am thinking of dropping him for either Meachem or Antonio Bryant. Who should I go after?
Bryant. Don't touch Meachem.
Should the Falcons draft Michael Johnson from Ga Tech next year? That would allow them to bring in a local talent and a great pass rusher to compliment Abraham (since Anderson has failed at that).
Hang loose a bit. It's early. Anderson still might show something.
Scott: (Dallas, TX):: If I can make it back to Tampa for 1 home game this year - which one should I go to? Would have to be the Seattle Sunday Nighter - Tribute to Alstott at halftime!
Good point -- just passing it on to Scott.
Bucs D? Old? Uhh..how? The only players on it that have been playing for more than 5 years or so are Brooks, Carter, and Barber. Barber and Carter have replacements waiting in the wings, Brooks, well, we'll see. #55 is hard to replace. Point being, I'm tired of hearing that line. It's an easy quip by people who can't be bothered to look at the rosters.
I'm looking at the roster. That's three key players who are old. Show me a young star on that D.
So how do you think the Falcons Secondary will do against Steve Smith and Co.?
Two more questions after this. Steve Smith is a huge challenge for any secondary. Falcons need to get some help from the pass rush.
Pat, dunno if you watched the SC/oregon game but the announcers were saying the Oregon running back, being short was hard for the DL of SC to see. True?
Sorry, didn't get a chance to see the game.
Tanard jackson is a young start on the Bucs D
Decent, but I don't know about a star yet. And he's a safety.
Pat Yasinskas: (2:01 PM ET ) I'm looking at the roster. That's three key players who are old. Show me a young star on that D Gaines Adams, Tanard Jackson, Cato June...
Again, Jackson and Adams are good and, perhaps, becoming stars. But I don't think they're there just yet.
Barret R, Gaines A, Dexter J, Jermain P., Sabby P, well the last one is personal opinion
Points taken, but I don't think you can call Barrett Ruud a star. Good player? Yes, absolutely.
How about Ruud? All 3 safeties? Gaines Adams? We don't know what Talib can do yet but I'm sure you saw him in preseason.Greg White? Jovan Haye? Are we expecting 11 Brooks' on a D before we call it good or can we remember that the 02 D was 3-4 bigshots and 7-8 solid roleplayers?
Let one of them be a star on the level of Brooks, Sapp or Barber in their prime and, then, your argument holds water. But I don't think they have anyone like that yet. Adams and Talib could become that.
All right, I've got to run. Thanks for stopping by. Enjoyed it.
