What's up folks? Thanks for stopping by for another MMA Live chat! So much to get to, as always. Let's roll...
KJ Noon's changes against KenFlo? I don't think them too much. KenFlo by RNC - Rd2
I've only seen KJ Noons fight live once, and he get knocked out very quickly by Charles 'Crazy Horse' Bennett. KJ is much-improved since, but he's certainly not on Florian's level, or anywhere close really.
Jon, Thanks for chatting again. Do you think Kimbo will ask for a rematch against Petruzelli? And if he gets it, will anything be different?
A lot of disagreement on the MMA Live set about this one. Franklin McNeil and I both agree that Kimbo and his camp should press for a rematch. He's gotta try to get that loss of his record. If not, he should at least fight someone legitimate who isn't years past his prime.
Elite XC continues to draw negative connotations towards MMA on a whole. After each show, they've received criticism thats ultimately saying.. "EliteXC and Shaw have set MMA back X amount of years." Is it time for them to start rebuilding their infrastructure and bring in some fresh faces to maintain... or rebuild a good public image?
A lot of what you say is valid, Remo. I though the Heat show, on the whole, had a lot of positives. But unfortunately, it will be remembered as a difficult night for the promotion. That said, I don't expect EliteXC to fade away anytime soon. As several MMA journalists have stated, there is more talent out there than the UFC can sign, and EliteXC and Affliction have scooped up a lot of it.
Hey Jon... can't wait for the show this week. Concerning the Arlovski v Nelson fight, I thought that first round Arlovski looked a little lost on his back. Do you see this as a problem in a Fedor matchup or just a result of Nelson's size immobilizing Arlovski??
Big Country is underrated on the ground, and we know where Arlovski's strength is. And Fedor poses a lot of problems for any heavyweight. I wouldn't favor Andrei in that match-up.
Good afternoon, Jon. Let's get it out of the way early. Your thoughts on Petruzelli's comments about EliteXC making it worth his while to stand up with Kimbo?
He issued the comments in a very comfortable setting for him, on the Monsters radio show in Orlando. I've listened to it several times, and have a hard time not taking Petruzelli at his word. I understood why he sort of retracted the statement thereafter. Regardless of what was said behind closed doors, EliteXC needs to know better. Even insinuating that you would like the fight to be fought standing can result in a firestorm, and that's exactly what happened. I don't think it was an imperative, but I do believe something was uttered to Seth about how to fight.
Do you still cover boxing or is it now all MMA? I am a fan of both, but MMA is much more exciting don't you think?
I would agree that MMA tends to deliver more than boxing does, Chris. And yes, I do still do the boxing radio show. I will be in Atlantic City next weekend covering Bernard Hopkins and Kelly Pavlik. Gonna be a tough night for my man B-Hop.
With Seth Petrozelli knocking Kimbo Slice out in front of the world! What does this turnout do to Seth's career? As well as Kimbo's career?
It'll certainly result in a big payday for Petruzelli, and perhaps even more if he takes advantage of it. As for Kimbo, I have no idea. 14 seconds is a small sample, but he doesn't seem to be improving a whole lot under Bas Rutten. Certainly not blaming Bas, but Kimbo can't be a main event until he gets at least two straight wins. And even then, he should only be part of any televised card, not the headliner.
Hi Jon, which hurt ElieteXC more Kimbo loss or the allegation that they told "the silverback" not to go to the ground.
Definitely the Kimbo defeat. If he had lasted a few minutes, been submitted, or even lost a decision, the loss would be stomach-able. But to lose at his own game in that fashion, not good. And neither is his chin, apparently. Wow.
What is the feeling around the studio about Junnie Browning and his apparent disregard for the seriousness of the opportunity he has/was given?
Pretty disgusted with Junie Browning last night on The Ultimate Fighter. I think I was more shocked than he was that Dana White didn't give him the boot. And while I always think Dana's comedic value is high, he needs to find a better adjective to use than 'retarded'. But Junie is a disgrace. He's inciting riots even when he's sober. Krzysztof Soszynski and Ryan Bader showed a ton of restraint and should be commended.
Another question regarding the fights on Saturday night. What did you think of the Roy Nelson/Andrei Arlovski stand up? I couldn't believe they stood them up with Big Country in side control. Is it a lack of understanding of the sport by the referee or the pressure from the fans and EliteXC to have "more exciting fights." I feel it was a travesty on the referee's part and most likely had a direct effect on the outcome of the fight.
More on this today on MMA Live. Florian said it was one of the worst instances he can remember, of a referee standing up a fight prematurely.
I remember Dana White saying that on the TUF show this season their is a fighter who reminds him of Anderson Silva? Who is this guy he is talking about?
Your guess is as good as mine to this point. I think Bader will be a real tough out, but not sure he is the guy Dana keeps referencing.
Who headlines the final EliteXC card? Do you think the public would go for Slice/Petruzelli II as the main event?
Slice/Petruzelli can't be the main event, Jeff. And, with respect to the ladies, neither can Cyborg vs. Carano. As for the ultimate headliner, Nov. 8th is a stacked card for EliteXC, and I think after that date, things will be more clear.
THIS IS THE GREATEST CHAT IN MMA HISTORY!!!!!!!!!
Hahaha...now that may be accurate, Gus.
Dana uses a lot of language many people dont agree with I imagine. As for Junie, do you think Dana gave him another chance due to the talent people say Junie possesses?
I don't mind the foul language at all, but as someone who taught autistic kids for years, Dana's gotta be careful with that stuff. He just doesn't need the headache from offended parties. As for Junie, I don't care how good he is in the cage. The other castmembers shouldn't be forced to put up with that garbage. And if you tell me they keep him around for ratings, guys like that certainly aren't why I watch.
Ken Shamrock wasted a huge oppurtunity last weekend! He could of been the guy to defeat Kimbo Slice? I think its time for Ken to hang up the gloves?
I agree, Joe. Not sure what he was thinking going so hard the day of. Florian was perplexed, too. How can EliteXC bank on him going forward in a key fight? All he had to do was step in the cage for a six-figure payday, and he somehow screwed that up. Just amazing.
I think Ken Shamrock will be back and will fight Frank Shamrock in his final fight. Is that a possibility?
Very much so. Both guys want the fight. And even if the hardcore MMA fans don't, the Shamrocks move the needles, and the fight is marketable. I think Frank has some good MMA left in him, and would rather him face someone who can give him a good fight.
Hey jon, what do you think HONESTLY would have happen if CBS let Frank Shamrock fight Kimbo last Saturday? He wasn't trained and had the arm injury recovery and was 40 pounds underweight?
Frank strikes me as a guy who is always in shape, but the injury would've been a factor. So might the braces have been.
Jon aren't you jealous of me? Am I the only one not mad at Gina for missing weight again?
Philipe Nover would be my guess for the "mini-Anderson Silva." He's the guy that fainted during Dana's opening speech.
You're on the record, Joe.
Rua vs Radach hasnt been talked about much. I happen to think it was the best fight that night. I think this is another case of deserving fighters getting passed over due to the hype of undeserving fighters. Your feelings on it?
Well, at least they were on the televised card. Radach lost his wind a bit in the second round, but he's a specimen. Looking forward to his next fight. Ninja's a tough dude as well, but at this point, he seems to struggle with good strikers.
Do you think Junie Browning is the best fighter in that house though?
Nope. But he would seem to be one of the best 3-4 lightweights.
Jake Shields looked really good and came as advertised on 'Heat' with his armbar. How do you think he stacks up to welterwieghts such as Nightmare Sanchez or Karo in the UFC?
Not well, Tim. I thought Shields' stand-up looked suspect. Hard to argue with 11 straight wins, but he's got work to do on his feet. And before he calls out Robbie Lawler at 185, Joey Villasenor is gonna beat him 11/8, so slow that roll.
Do you think Tito Ortiz will end up fighting Frank Shamrock on a Elite XC card on CBS? Who do you think would win this fight?
Yes, John. I do think that fight will be made, but not before May, at the earliest. Both guys are in recovery mode, although Shamrock will be ready to fight far sooner. But yes, that fight will happen, and I'd favor Shamrock at this point.
Your thoughts on Efrain Escudero?
Solid performance from him last night, Adam. Very happy he was able to finish Shane Nelson, given Nelson's behavior.
Jon, is it a mistake for Elite to be moving their product to PPV in early 2009? I recognize the CBS deal was for up to 4 cards, but I think a poor PPV showing would mean the end for the company.
I think the Kimbo loss may force EliteXC to reassess its plans for early 2009. I expect another CBS card before a PPV. It'll be interesting to see how EliteXC handles the Carano-Cyborg fight. I would think they would love that to end up on PPV, b/c a lot of people want to see it.
Villasenor over Lawler - - come on Jon - you're a smart guy.....I take that action
We'll have to come up with a side wager of some kind. Our MMA Live producers always give me a hard time, b/c I'm a huge Villasenor guy.
My favorite part of the Slice-Petruzzelli "fight" was the promoter that was yelling at the referee from outside the cage after the fight. This guy needs to take a cue from Vince McMahon on how to rig a fight.
Jared Shaw is dodging bullets this week. He knows he made a mistake, and I don't expect it'll happen again.
Jon, if you were running Affliction, how would you handle Fedor right now? Who would you face him aganist to maximize his name, but also not risk him getting beat?
Affliction doesn't need to worry about hand-picking an opponent for fear that Fedor would lose. Even if he lost to Arlovski or another top guy, his name still rings true with MMA fans, and he's still a must-see when he fights. I think Arlovski is the obvious choice for the re-scheduled Day of Reckoning card.
What are your thoughts on the rumors about the details Tito's deal with EXC? Will this deal actually change the landscape of contracts in mma?
Tito's new contract will likely include a revenue-sharing component that allows him to capitalize on things like PPV buys and merchandise. But I don't think it will be a landscape changer b/c few MMA fighters have the name recognition that Ortiz does.
Are you as excited as I am to see Anderson Silva on TUF next week? That training footage looked pretty sweet.
I'd be excited to watch Silva drink a cup of coffee.
How do you compare the handling of Fedor to Lesnar?
For whatever reason, Fedor doesn't fight that often, and hasn't fought top competition. Hopefully, that changes under Affliction. Say what you want about Tim Sylvia, but he was considered a top guy when Fedor annihilated him. As for Lesnar, my thoughts remain consistent. Other than Nogueira, he is the ONLY UFC HW right now that would be favored to beat Randy Couture (and he will be when the line closes 11/15). So, I think Lesnar deserves the title shot, and the UFC is proceeding exactly as I would with Brock.
Hey Jon, who ya got at UFC 89?
We'll go through the full slate of predictions next week, but I am not picking Leben to upset Bisping.
do you think it is a must win for vera against jardine.
Crossroads fight for both guys. I think Vera gets it done.
Why does UFC not have a super heavyweight class?
Good question, Todd. We got an e-mail this week asking about Shaquille O'Neal as a potential fighter. I think Shaq would rather be a cop post-NBA than an MMA fighter. But he certainly couldn't cut to 265. Also, Frank Mir and I had a discussion about this a month ago, and I'll share his point as well. 'Heavyweight Champion' has a great ring to it. 'Super Heavyweight Champion' sounds a bit ridiculous and contrived.
Junie is using weapons, and cutting people, trying to drown people. Can the person who was cut sue for the attack? How is Junie still on the show after such repeated assaults?
I am as perplexed as you are James. I have no idea. As anyone who chats with us every week knows, I am a huge Dana White supporter. But he missed on this decision big time.
Jon, lets say EXC goes under sometime next year. Does UFC eventually scoop Carano up and start a womens division? Or maybe WEC starts one? I'm actually enjoying these women fights more than I thought I would.
Wish I could share your enjoyment. I have all the respect in the world for the women, but, watching women fight has always been off-putting for me. And, I don't expect the UFC to ever embrace women's MMA. It may not be fair, but, unfortunately, there are just a lot of people that don't enjoy watching the women fight.
Urijah Faber has said he would like to fight at 155 and 135. at 155 what do you think about a fight with him and bj? and how do you think it would end?
I think we're all getting a bit impatient b/c we want to see Faber fight the best guys in the world. I think the fight would be competitive right now, and I'm not sure it would end before time expired.
I love watching Tyson Griffin fight. How do you see his fight with Sherk going and why is it not a conversation piece?
It's a busy week with the Kimbo stuff, and we still have UFC 89 to discuss. But the three top fights at UFC 90 all pique my interest. I'm especially looking forward to Sanchez-Alves. I have already picked Griffin to beat Sherk, so no back-tracking now. But I've had a hard time getting people to agree with me.
The UFC has a hard enough time filling their Heavyweight division. How many Super Heavyweights are out there that would be good fighters? A few I'm sure, but not enough to justify a division.
Good point, Nikita.
If you had a oppurtunity to select a oppenent for Fedor Emelianenko who would you pick?
Maybe Barnett. But if we can go outside of Affliction, I really want to see the Couture fight before Randy retires.
I read a CNBC article this week that essentially compared the UFC to the NFL, saying the market is UFC, not particularly MMA as far as the general public is concerned. Do you think this is a fair assessment? Would it really be that bad if the UFC was the only elite MMA organization in the US?
There is definitely an apt comparison to be drawn between the UFC and the NFL, but I think competition is important for MMA. It certainly benefits the fans. EliteXC's deal with CBS is great for casual and hardcore fans alike. And as we said earlier, there are more talented fighters in the world than there are spots in the UFC.
Hey Jon, one more Junie question. Whats gonna happen next week after Junie has jumped over the cage? Also, what would you give to see Big Nog take Junie down and work a little magic?
If that wasn't the last straw for Junie, then I don't know what to tell you. Nogueira is so inherently likable on the show...and I'd like him even more if he, out of blue, floored Junie.
Do you think Frank Mir has any shot against Big Nog - it just seems like he is way too relaxed.
Frank will be back in Bristol next week, which will give me a better feel for where he is at physically at this point. I just hope he's running 8 miles a day, b/c Big Nog doesn't know what 'tap out' means, and its scheduled for 25 minutes.
who do you see coming out on top with the Mir/Nog/Lesner/Couture fiasco?
I expect Nogueira and Lesnar to fight for the title. That's as far in advance as I'm willing to predict.
Who ya got saturday night? Klitchsko or Peter, Tarver or Dawson. I think the Magic Man has a little magic left in him to pull it off.
Not sure who will bury me first for taking a boxing question, MMA Nation, or my bosses. But I was surprised Sam Peter was an underdog. I think he stops Klitschko, and I also think there is some value on Tarver +200. But I favor Dawson via decision.
Jon, are we supposed to believe you really have time to watch all these foreign MMA cards and events like Sengoku? I watch them, but I am also unemployed and living off my girl's social security check from her pops.
I devote about 2.5 days/week to MMA, and I watch every fight I can. But there are some that I miss. I wish I could cover MMA full-time, but that isn't in the cards right now. Hopefully soon...As for your (un)employment situation, milk it while you can.
alvarez vs. diaz should be a fantastic fight. a special thanks to kj for being a baby now we get a great fight.
That's good comedic value right there. The champ gets stripped of the title, and the fans get a better match-up. Nice angle.
Does Frank Mir know you picked Nog over him?
I'm guessing Gina Carano will be fighting at 145 from now on. I just don't think her body will allow her to get to 140, no matter how hard she tries.
Call me a conspiracy theorist if you must, but I'm not even sure she made 141 naked. I agree that 145 is where she should fight at from here on out.
Hey Jon, how pumped are you for UFC 92, its definitly looking like the card of the year. Who do you think will win between Forrest Griffin, and Rashad Evans?
UFC 92 is loaded. And I am done betting against Forrest Griffin until he loses again. I've been burned enough. And I've yet to find a single MMA fan that doesn't like him. How can you not?
What are your picks to take the contract in each of the two classes in this season of TUF?
Isn't it a bit early? I guess I'll say Soszynski at 205, but I have no idea at 155. Do you?
They should have switched the heavy weight matchups so it was wrestler vs Bjj, not wrestler vs wrestler and Bjj vs Bjj. Mir's Bjj is just not as good as Nog's so I think he has little chance.
Easier said than done. They have a whole reality show built around one fight, and the other is about as compelling a match-up in terms of names as you can put on. Style-wise, you are right.
Why do people constently count out Couture? Hasnt he proven time and time again that he is to be feared when he is considered "the underdog". He seems to only lose when he has problems in his personal life, an now he seems to have everything going well for him. Why do people not give him the credit he's due?
When I met Randy for the first time at the Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright fight last July, all I kept thinking was 'So that's what a legend looks like...that is how a legend carrys himself...' Couture is the man, and gets plenty of love from the media, fellow fighters, and fans. I just happen to have predicted Lesnar to beat him. Doesn't mean I don't respect Couture as one of the all-time greats and MMA ambassadors.

You already keep me on my toes, Rob. Wish I could pay ya...
Hey Jon, I know how Anderson has said he will stay out of the light-heavyweight division, but Rich Franklin just beat a fairly high ranked light heavyweight in Matt Hamill. And if Rich beats Hendo, bigger fights are on the way for Rich at 205. Question is, if Rich were to do well at 205, doesn't that make Anderson have to go up, given he destroyed Rich twice?
That's why Rich Franklin is in such a tough spot. I would think the UFC would be reluctant to give him a title shot at 205, for fear that he'd win, and then you'd have a 205-lb. champion who got mauled by the 185-lb. champion.
Jon, they have a P4P list for mma fighters and boxers. Can you give us your P4P list of which fans of the show and the chats you think are the strongest?
I've been working on it for the last two weeks, but it's complete. You're in the mix, Joe.
I really liked how Dana handled the JT Money situation, despite the fact that I liked JT Money. Conversely, I already can't stand either Browning or that other guy, and what they did was worse in my opinion. Along with the Rampage situation, I think Dana is looking like a pretty big hypocrit.
Not a shining moment for D White last night. Have no explanation as to why he kept Junie around...
By the way Jon - what do you suppose Ken was doing the day of the fight to get 6 stitches above his eye?
No idea, man. No clue. Shamrock actually had a worse week than Junie Browning. Amazing.
How about inviting Kenny & Franklin to chat with MMA Nation sometime?
The invitation is open, and has been since we started chatting.
Love the show and the chats!! With the WEC folding there two respective divisons, can we count on seeing unification matches with the respective champions?
No, you won't see unification matches. The WEC champions will have to work their way up to the UFC title. Some may disagree with that assessment.
Jon, I read in local blogs that Shaq might be in MMA someday. His knees couldnt' possibly hold up, right? Plus, he may be "tough" for NBA terms, but I don't think a guy his size really knows how to respond after getting hit in the face.
Not holding my breath, Cappie. But I do expect, at some point down the line, to see some higher-profile athletes take the plunge into MMA.
Hey, show me some love!!!
AKA the Anderson Silva of these chats - - -LOL!!!! j/k guys j/k
Some local sports talk guys were saying that MMA is nothing more than BUM FIGHTS in a cage. How would you respond?
There's a lot of ignorance out there with regards to MMA. If they spent 5 minutes with Kenny Florian or Frank Mir, I bet they'd change their tune pretty quickly. A lot of talking heads sound off without being informed.
Jon, what do you mean? What kind of high profile atheltes? Boxers or others? The money isn't enough for other sports athletes to come over.
Just to test themselves. Athletes are competitive, and get bored. I know Shawne Merriman (Chargers linebacker) isn't healthy right now, but he's been known to practice some MMA. And, if he was set for life after his NFL career, who's to say he wouldn't want the challenge of an MMA fight. Kenny Florian has said he wouldn't mind a couple strictly boxing matches before his career is over. Elite athletes like to test themselves.
Is there any fight out there you are just dying to see?
Selfishly, I would like to see Florian get a shot at BJ, b/c few think he can win, and Ken-Flo deserves it. I also want to see Fitch-Koscheck.
I didn't like the production work on the Elite show. Changing cameras every 5 seconds and having most shots from above made it very difficult to watch.
Still a work in progress.
