Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (11:59 AM)

Greetings from Las Vegas Freaks, where I'll be at Tarver-Dawson tomorrow night. Good weekend of boxing with that fight and Peter-Vitali Klitschko. Plenty to discuss. Check out today's feature on Tarver-Dawson and this week's blogs and all of our Peter-Klitschko coverage. Let's get to it.

Seattle, WA

How about a rematch between Winky and Jermain?

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

That would be just fine.

Ray (Camden, NJ)

hey Dan, how you doing? Dan,do you know who is going to be Edison Miranda next opponent and do you see Mirand winning a tittle one day?

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Yes, Edison's opponent on Nov. 11 is Emmanuel Esparza. I think in the right Edison could punch his way to a belt.

FREAKS

NO NOTEBOOK?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

No notebook today. Deal with it.

Rob (Halifax, Canada)

Shed some light on the Valuev-holyfeild situation. Whats the real deal

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

The real deal is that he was absolutely offered the fight but it seems to me he was offered the bout without Valuev himself knowing about or his manager.

Luis: (Philadelphila PA):

Dan, is there any truth to Paul Williams vacating his belt because he can't make weight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

He has always said he can make the weight. If he vacates, it would be, at this point, to take a fight of note at a different weight, be it 154 or 160.

Cory (Fargo, ND)

How about Miranda vs. the winner of Bika/Manfredo?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

That would be interesting.

Rich (Stamford CT)

Hey Dan, thanks as always for the Friday chat. I understand he may have money problems, but I think it's awful that Evander is being set up for a fight with Valuev. There are so many things wrong with this...

Angel, Carson City

Do you think Vitali has the stamina after such a long lay off to keep Peter at bay with his jab for 12 rounds?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

I don't think they'll need 12. This one probably isn't going to the cards.

Jermaine (New Haven, CT)

If and when Chad defeats Tarver tomorrow night. What would be next for him? Roy Jones? Pavlik?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Obviously, if Chad wins he should be in the conversation to fight the winner of Calzaghe-Jones or Pavlik-Hopkins, but I do not see either happening next.

Frank (PHX)

Alright Dan, so whats the predictions for this weekend's fights? Thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

I like Dawson on a decision. I saw Chad yesterday and he looks SOOO strong and in incredible shape. Tarver, to be honest, looks a little small and depleted. In the heavyweight fight, I have no idea, someone is going to sleep. But I'm going with Klitschko via knockout.

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

Dan, I'm so pumped for the fight tomorrow. The Palms is a great place to watch a fight! Is it true that they're gonna show the heavyweight fight on a big screen inside the theater right before Tarver-Dawson?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

Yes, it is true. They will have the undercard in the theater and then take a break and show the heavys on the big screen and then follow with the main event. What is amazing is that the tickets here for the fight are dead from what I am told. It's only a 2,000-seat place and they are not close to sold out from I was told yesterday. That should give both Tarver and Dawson pause as whether they are truly attractions if they have designs on a Jones, Calzaghe, Hopkins or Pavlik, all of whom could sell 2,000 tickets easily.

Chris (Appleton, WI)

I loved your DVD pick of the week. The night before your blog posted, I too decided to put in Klitschko-Williams. I also agree, that if Klitschko can fight like that...Peter is going to sleep.

Choco, New Jersey

I find it annoying that so many are hating on Gamboa. This is a kid that exemplifies why people love boxing and he is being slagged for not being like Pernell Whitiker. Shouldnt we be thanking Gamboa for taking risks so he can please the fans???

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

We're not ripping him, just pointing out his obvious flaws. He can still be electrifying and show his talent with a little of defense. I think people would like for him to improve that so he is around for a long time.

Alex (Florida)

With Peter-Klitschko and Dawson-Tarver airing from different locations, who does Showtime plan to have broadcasting on each card?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Al Bernstein and Steve Albert are here in Vegas and will call the heavyweight live from a monitor and then later call the Tarver-Dawson fight. But Showtime also has Steve Farhood in Berlin to provide the atmosphere and handle interviews. It's a complicated broadcast but I am sure Showtime will pull it off nicely.

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

Kevin Kelley fights tonight Dan...ugh...Any thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

I'm gonna be sick.

Gary, Indy

Dano, who is HBO identifying as their next staple attraction once De La Hoya, Mosley, and Roy Jones retires? Is it Cotto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Cotto is part of it. They are also doing fights with younger guys like Gamboa, Angulo and Berto.

Cory (Fargo, ND)

A fight like Tarver/Dawson should have a "big fight" atmosphere.....It's a shame that it sounds like there will be no more people than at a local Minnesota show. I thought Vegas was a boxing town? What's the problem? Ticket prices?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

I think the economy is part of it. The tickets are a little expensive and there has been very little advertising.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Pavlik is another younger guy HBO is riding with also. Can't believe I left him out. And I also think you may see some more JM Lopez.

John (DC)

Hi Dan. With Juan Manuel Lopez being rumored to be in the De la Hoya vs. Pacman undercard, any idea who a possible opponent might be?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

That is still TBA.

Will (Phoenix)

Dan, has Ike Quartey's December fight been finalized?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Not yet.

Tony(Tampa)

If Tarver pulls off the upset tonight on Dawson would he be in the conversation for a Hall of Fame entry?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

It would surely help a lot. .You'd have to at least consider it. I'm not saying it's a yes, but it's a big step in the right direction.

John (ATL GA)

Dan, I know you think Klitschko will win but you gotta be rooting for Peter just to aviod the Kilts bros holding the division hostage. I don't think it would help the state of the hw's at all for them both to have a title.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

I'm not rooting for or against anyone but obviously, if Vitali wins it really messes things up,

Jarrod Indiana

Dan, i've heard mosley v margarito...how serious is this? And ur predicted outcome?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

It is one scenario that is under discussion. But that's a very expensive fight to make and the promoters don't want that on PPV, so HBO will have to come with a big check and I'm not sure the fight is worth that.

Dan (Nutley, NJ)

How come the poll on the boxing page refers to Klitschko and Dawson as the underdogs? They are both pretty big favorites.

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I have no idea. Dawson and Klitschko are both the favorites here in the Palms sportsbook, where I was checking out the board yesterday.

rob (jersey)

Dan I have a dillema for Nov 8th. I'm an Abraham fan and want to watch, but I also have a ticket for RJJ/JoeCal. Do they plan on showing the Abraham fight live? WOuld it be ok to miss the undercard (2 hour train ride to NYC)

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

At the moment, the Abraham fight is not necessarily going to be on PPV like it was going to be had it not been postponed.

John (DC)

Dan, I read your blog on the up & comers of the 154 lbs. Why did you leave out Carlos Quintana? He upset Joel Julio and Paul Williams. You think he might make some noise at that division. I know his next fight wont' be at welterweight, do you know if he's planning to move up?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I left a lot of the more veteran older guys out. No slight on Quintana, who if he moves up might be able to make some noise. The jist was new faces and younger gu

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I left a lot of the more veteran older guys out. No slight on Quintana, who if he moves up might be able to make some noise. The jist was new faces and younger guys.

Aaron (MA)

Do you know the venue for Bika/Manfredo in Providence?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

The Dunkin Donuts Center.

Joe: San Francisco, CA

If I'm HBO I hitch my ride to JuanMa Lopez, Paul Williams and Juan Diaz. They will all 3 be top 10 P4P in the next few years. And I broadcast everything Angulo and Kirkland are in because they are guaranteed excitement.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Duly noted.

Brandon (Florida)

Dan how much do you put into Oscar saying on the radio the other day that a fight with Antonio Margarito "will definitely happen." Blowing smoke or possibility?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Promoting the Pacquiao fight.

Ivan "LatinoPorVida" Montiel

Dan are you coming to Casino Rama next month to watch Steve Molitor vs Celestino Caballero in their unification title fight? Also who you see winning?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I won't be at that one because I will be back in Vegas for Hatton-Malignaggi but I am looking forward to that one. I really have no idea on that one and have not made a pick, but Molitor is hard to beat at home.

Carlos (Funky Town, TX)

I was listening to Mike and Mike the other day and they ripped boxing and said it was in a crisis because they needed to use Holyfield to fight an unknown heavyweight champion to bring attention to the sport. They also said MMA is bigger than boxing. Mike and Mike should be banned they are idiots when it comes to boxing. 2 million payperviews I dont think MMA best show has broke 1 million.

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Mike and Mike are typical mainstream radio guys who are clueless about boxing and ignorant. If they want to talk about it they should have me on and I will set them straight.

Alan (South Africa)

Good or bad? Two brothers as heavyweight champ. Try and explain that one to someone who doesn't know the sport.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Bad. Very confusing for a lot of people.

Pittsburgh, PA

How about Dawson fighting the winner of Taylor-Lacy?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Really good fight.

Jerson, Cavenaugh, ND

What ever happened to Abner Mares' title shot againt Penalosa?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Just couldn't worked at this time. But Abner is a mandatory so hopefully early next year.

Dan (Nutley, NJ)

I'm sure you'll watch, but do you have any real desire to see Ricardo Williams fight tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I'm kinda interested to see what he's got left.

Wes (North CA)

I still cant believe Holyfield is still fighting or trying to fight. So I will go ahead and ask(since I am a fan of The Real Deal) would he have any chance against Valuev, in your awesome opinion?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

I Ihave a hard time seeing Holyfield win a fight like that with a 300 pounder laying on him all night and Evander not being a good enough puncher to keep him off.

Chris (Manchester)

Hey Dan, when will these promoters (Golden Boy, Top Rank, Shaw) stop putting all the fights in Vegas and move them around? You don't see the NFL, MMA, MLB, or NBA doing this only boxing.... and they wonder why ticket sales suck!

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

You're off. There are lots of fights elsewhere. Taylor-Lacy is in Nashville. Mijares-Darchinyan and Mosley-Mayorga were in Carson, Calif., Calzaghe-Jones is in NYC, etc... And those are some notable fights.

Charles (Philly)

If Vitali wins the WBC belt and retires to pursue his political career, would Wlad be positioned to fight for the vacant title?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

No, because he is not ranked by the WBC because he holds other titles.

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

Dan, in your article you say that Showtime had no interest buying Dawson-Diaconu this time around. Wasn't that a fight they were initially interested in some months ago? Seems like a real good scrap

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Yes, they had bought it awhile ago before Diaconu got hurt and was replaced by Mendoza. And I agree it's a solid fight. However, they weren't going to do that fight after giving Chad and Tarver three other fights. They wanted them against each other and finally put the foot down.

Tomas (MD)

Dan....fill in the blank- Ricardo Williams is __________

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

The biggest Olympic bust in history.

John (ATL GA)

Dan, as the date approaches are you getting excited for Pavlik-Hopkins. Ther fight could be really terrible, but if Pavlik can land some good shots, which is easier said than done, I think he could score a late TKO.

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

If you've been reading me, you know I'm not a huge fan of the fight. That said, they both did a great job talking up the fight on their recent media conference calls this week.

Justin (New York)

Any word on if Forrest is going to accept the Sergio Martinez fight?....If not, how about Martinez vs an in-shape Mora.

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

I do not think Forrest will fight him. But Martinez-Mora would be sort of an interesting fight and I wouldn't mind seeing it actually.

Pancho, Los Mochis

Can you see Valero vs. Juan Diaz in early 09 on HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

I'd love to see that but there would be some work to do to make that one happen. I can see it eventually. Early 2009? I doubt it.

John (DC)

How serious is the elbow injury Pavlik had? Is it gonna have any effect on the fight or do you think it's just be blown out of proportion?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

From what Kelly told us, blown out of proportion. There isn't a fighter alive who doesn't come out of a training camp with bumps and bruises.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, am I crazy for thinking that Glen Johnson is the best 175lber out there?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

Glen is really good, but at this point, I do not think it's realistic to say he's No. 1 at 175.

Craig D. Royersford, PA

Danimale, Who do you think will sign Galaxy Warrior Nate Campbell to a promotional contract and what do you expect his signing bonus to be? That guy deserves a break.

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I think all the promoters will be interested in him, but he needs to get his legal situation with the bankruptcy settled first I think. Don King recently sent out a legal letter to various promoters threatening legal action if they use him, so it'll get a little ugly before it gets better.

Kirk, Ocala, FL

Dan, why did Darchinyan take the fight against Mijares - he is going to get schooled!

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

What kind of moronic question is that? He wants to be the best and wants to unify the titles. He should be applauded.

New York, NY

If both Hopkins and Taylor win their fights could we see a third fight between them?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Bite your tongue. Who would want to see a third one? No way that happens.

Jimmy (Arlington, VA)

What's next for Guzman?

Jerry ( Phoenix , AZ)

Hi Dan, David Haye vs Chad Dawson ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

I have no idea and I don't care. He's still in the doghouse.

Brandon (Florida)

Dan can you recall who was the last fighter regardless of weight class who held all 4 major sanctioning body titles(Ring Title included)

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Taylor after beating Hopkins.

John (DC)

BHOP said he ain't afraid of no ghost. How awesome would it be if for his ring entrance he came in with "The Ghostbusters theme song"?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

I'm sure it's crossed his mind and would not be surprised if that was indeed his walk in music.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, you would know better...How many bad decisions has G Johnson been on the wrong end of?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Probabably at least 5 or 6.

Brent, Toronto

Dan, any word on whether Lomachenko is going to join the pro ranks?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

To my knowledge, the best fighter in the 2008 Olympics plans to remain anateur.

Josh (Lincoln, NE)

Do you agree that Peter has had minimal improvement over the last three years? His highlight seemed to be knocking down Wlad 3 times and managing to survive late. When Jameel McCline is dropping you, you have issues.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

I can't really argue against your point. But he did look pretty good beating Toney twice (especially laying the smackdown in the rematch) and

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

I can't really argue against your point. But he did look pretty good beating Toney twice (especially laying the smackdown in the rematch) and blasting Maskaev.

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

D-Nice, great blog on the Nov. 1 card. You comin to Vegas for that or might that be a RAD night?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

That may be a RAD night.

Andrew (Providence, RI)

Dan, what would be the next best test for Berto out there besides the mandatory in Collazo?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

I'd like to see him maybe face someone like Judah.

Charles (Philly)

As a barometer of these tough economic times, the freaks deserve to know: did you get the upgrade?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Yes, I did the upgrade coming out here. Thank you for your concern.

Habs (Phoenix, AZ)

Dan: If Angulo and Kirkland were to fight in the next year(completely unrealistic) who would you pick?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

At this point, I would take Angulo.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, why is everyone making such a big deal about DLH/Manny weight diff....years ago it happened all the time?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Exactly. Too many people are too ignorant.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Exactly. Too many people are too ignorant.

Tim (Denver)

Danorino, I cannot wait for next weeks Pavlik vs Hopkins! I see Pavlik winning late rounds to take a solid unanimous decision, with at least one 10-8 round late.

Angel, Carson City

I have insomnia Dan - do you think Luevano vs. Dib will cure me?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Maybe Luevano will do us all a favor and end it early.

STEVE (NY)

DIRRELL vs OGANOV? is that the same OGANOV who got wasted some months ago on showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Yes.

Pribs (Bethlehem, PA)

Any word on Judah fighting at 140 on Nov. 8th?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Judah will fight on that card from what I am told but I am not clear on the exact weight or opponent.

Jimmy (Arlington, VA)

Is women's boxing dead?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Was it ever alive?

STEVE (NY)

how is the atmosphere at VEGAS? do you see any prominent guys?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

This place is dead right now. I am lonely.

Pat (NY)

Do you think JMM, Morales, and Barrera are top 25 Featherweights of all time? Also do you Juan is better than Rafeal? I think Juan is so much better than lil bro all around.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Yes, they are clearly top 25. I think you have to rank JM as better than his brother, although Rafael has been outstanding as well.

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

D-Nice, can you tell me what time the weigh-in is and if it's open to the public? The receptionist at the Palms sounds like she doesn't even know there's a fight there tomorrow

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

The weigh in is at 2 but I am not sure if it's open to the public.

John (DC)

With Margarito vs. Mosley being rumored, have you heard anything on a possible opponent for Miguel Cotto, other than Lujan which you had previously mentioned?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Still up in the air.

Hanna, New York

Hi Dan, nice blog on Devon Alexander. How do you rate his chances against Tim Bradley right now?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Would definitely be a competitive fight. I am pleased to report that after that blog suddenly Devon was offered fights on King's China card next month and also on the Dec. 11 Cunningham-Adamek card.

Seattle, WA

Does the fact that ticket sales for the Tarver/Dawson fight being so low, have anything do with both fighter being on Showtime recently? Showtimes market is so relatively small.

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

I guess that could be part of it, although Tarver was in huge HBO PPV fights with Jones and Hopkins and in Rocky.

Chris (Appleton, WI)

I would love to see Devon on the Cunningham-Adamek undercard on Versus!

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

We have breaking news via the Bat Cell Phone.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

To update for our Freak friend who didn't know what to do about Calzaghe-Jones and Abraham-Marquez, I have been informed by Doug Jacobs of Integrated Sports that his company will indeed carry the rescheduled Abraham-Marquez fight on PPV in the afternoon.

Kirk, Buffalo

HBO or Showtime should give some love to Chocolatito Gonzales - this kid is sensational for being so small.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

I would love to see him get on US TV. Would make for a great undercard on Showtime or Boxing After Dark.

Josh (Alexandria, VA)

Dan, I know what the announced (TV) undercard is for Pavlik-Hopkins next week. Are there any dynamite must-see prospects that I should see from the opening bell on, or if I'm on a hot run at the craps table, should I keep it going until the card goes on the air?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Danny Garcia, one of my favorite prospects, is supposed to be on the card.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)

Dan is all powerful one stroke of the pen and he got Alexander TWO fights! Now if he can only solve this economic problem we have.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Let's see if Devon is actually ON both cards.

Joel Julio

Can I come out of my room yet, Dad?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Yes, but only to go to the gym and train for your title bout in Germany.

LatinoPorVida

When is Chris Arreola gonna get a shot at a world title? This guy is an animal and deserves a big opportunity, I believe he would be great for the heavyweight division!

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

He deserves nothing until he beats a top contender first. You need to settle down.

Paul B (NY, NY)

I will be in attendance for Calzaghe RJJ and am feeling slighted about the undercard. Salita Limond? Can I expect that this situation will improve in the coming weeks?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Judah is also on but the undercard looks miserable.

Mick

Dan, who did you have winning the Mosley-Mayorga fight before the knockout?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Mosley with relative ease.

Matt (Washington, DC)

Ok, then have you heard anything about what's next for Arreola? Seems like a lot of the usual suspects' dance cards are getting filled up. He needs somebody like Tua or Rahman.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

He's fighting on HBO on Nov. 29 under Paul Williams. Looks like Travis Walker as his opponent. Tua won't fight him. Rahman has other plans.

Jordan (Nashville, Tennessee)

I have read that the Taylor-Lacy fight will be in Nashville at Memorial Gym on Vanderbilt's campus. Is that for certain? I have not seen when the tickets go on sale.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Yes it is certain and tickets are on sale now.

Tim (Denver)

Danno, Do you know if there is a rematch clause in the Hatton Malinaggi contract? I think Malinaggi wins in a stinker. Hatton walking into a jab for 12 rounds.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

I do not believe there is a rematch clause in the contract.

Gerardo (Tempe, AZ)

Hey Thrilla From DANila (I tried). I am going to be in Tucson tonight and have a chance to see the Telefutura card, but it doesn't look attractive at all. Is there anything there that you think would be worth watching?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Telefutura card is decent. David Lopez is in the main and I have him ranked in the top 10 at middlweight. He usually makes good fights. Hylon Williams is on the card and he's a good prospect and if Kevin Kelley does anything for you, he's also on.

Nick (Raleigh, NC)

Dan, Angulo has quickly become one of my favorite fighters and I think he could eventually move up to middleweight and make some noise, what do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

I think you need to enjoy the ride at 154 and forget about that at the moment. What's the rush? He's got about 13 fights. Let him develop and make good fights at 154 first.

Zowild

How about this fight, The Punisher vs. Miranda at 166.

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Why?

Adam (Seattle, Wa)

what do you think of the Kimbo fight and the guy who said he was paid more to stand against Kimbo. I think it might hurt both sports since everyone thinks boxing is corrupted.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

It has nothing to do with boxing.

Jeff (South Dakota)

Dan--your reference to the Olajide/Smith KO in your chat last week is what I love to read about. Discovering these gems is what is great about being a fight collector. Check out the Ray Mercer/Jeff Pegius KO. This is a frightening KO. The punch 'Merciless' threw was borderline murder on that dude--Keep up the great work-

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

That Mercer-Pegues KO was also sick.

Zowild

Rafael; Proposition to the DLH/Manny fight; tell Golden Boy and Top Rank to contract with Upper Deck (give them free promo if anything) to produce the tickets. A lot of us paid top dollar so I want to see tix that rival Super Bowl ticket productions

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

We gotta give Luevano more credit...his last two fights have been pretty entertaining

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I give Steven plenty of credit and his recent fights have been good, but B**** D** is awful to watch and stink them out with the best of them.

Steven

Any chance we see Humberto Soto get a big fight if he beats Diaz saturday night.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I sure hope so, he deserves it.

Billy(SD)

If the Klitchskos do both get a title, you think they might consider fighting each other at some point? I know they say it'll never happen but that would be the biggest HW fight in years in my humble opinion

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Forget about it. They will never fight each other.

Habs (Phoenix, AZ)

Bat Dan: I am have devloped a totla freak crush on Juam Manual Lopez. He is unbelievable smooth and exciting! He looks big for the weight class, any trouble making weight an who would you like to see him fight next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

I'd like to see him just fight a solid top-10 type of opponent, build his resume a little for the next couple of fights and then take on another one of the titleholders.

Nathan (Raleigh, NC)

Any recognizable names on the untelevised portion of the Pavlik/Hopkins undercard? I thought you mentioned Yuri Foreman...

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Yes, Yuri is also on that undercard against Vinroy Barrett.

Michael (Toronto)

DTM, who are the most all-business, mean, focused, no-joke fighers you've interviewed?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Kostya Tszyu was always very serious and focused. He springs to mind.

Joe: San Francisco, CA

Did you see the Hauser article on the ESPN page comparing their weights year by year? Totally unfair comparison. He is comparing Manny at 16 years old to Oscar at 22 years old instead of comparing each of them at the same age.

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

I agree.

bruce torrance,ca

did you see the open workout video of peter and vitali? just wondering if that factored into your pick. thanks.

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

I didn't see it.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Danimal Kingdom- I think that my wife is a boxing convert. She made me replay Torres Holt II (all be it the 1.5 mins) 3 times for her!!! Any new news on a part III?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Good for your wife! They are working on that fight for Dec. 13 on Showtime but it is not done yet.

E (Omaha)

D$$ - As of noon today, is Vitali still healthy?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Yes.

SL (NY)

can you talk about Moruti Mthalane and why you think he is a serious challenge for NONAIRE?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Because I watched his last fight and he's a pretty good fighter with a tough style and because I know Donaire is having a tough time with his weight.

Adam (Seattle, Wa)

Best Dan Sports show period. Do you think Willaims could hold titles at all 3 weight classes at once. 147 154 160.

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

That will never happen simply because the organizations will never allow it.

John (ATL GA)

Dan, and interesting questions was recently brought up in a blog: exactly how many cats do you have? I think 15.

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Two, thanks for asking. Our third died earlier this year.

British Drunk

DEATH, TAXES, AND THERE IS ONLY ONE...

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Ricky Hatton?

David (Winston-Salem, NC)

Danno! Any word on Tavoris Cloud? I cannot wait to see this guy again!

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Unfortunately, nothing whatsoever.

Charles (Philly)

Do you think economic fears could be suppressing ticket sales? I know I'd be hesitant to buy this fight on pay-per-view (which I know it's not) after looking at my 401k.

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

The easiest thing in the world is to not buy a PPV.

Joe (Pensacola, FL)

Correction: It's "DEATH, TAXES, IRONBOY BY DECISION..."

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

My bad.

Nathan (Raleigh, NC)

Why do I dislike Chad Dawson so much? Everyone else seems to love the guy, but I'm rooting hard for Tarver who many people hate. I've always liked Tarver even though I'm typically not one to back guys that do a lot of talking.

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

I have no idea. You might want to consider therapy.

Alex(Bristol,CT)

How come Pual Williams isn't number two at welter when he beat Margarito and Cotto got knocked out?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Because he also lost to a much weaker opponent not that long ago in Quintana (even though he beat him in a rematch). So when you have to split hairs, I give Margarito and Cotto the slight nod. Simple as that. You are entitled to disagree.

Dan (Nutley, NJ)

Earlier in the chat, you said that you thought Tarver looked 'depleted'. Is there any reason that you know of for this? Did he have to cut alot of weight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

I'm pretty sure Tarver had to cut weight and he's had hard times making 175 in recent years and he's not getting any younger.

Chris (Appleton, WI)

I like the fact that Sam Peter has been training in Germany for 5 weeks, but I don't like the fact that he weighed in at 253. Do you think that's too high for him to be successful against Klitschko?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

It's a bit heavy.

Tim (Denver)

Is Gamboa still your prospect of the year? or has Angulo, maybe Alvarado passed him as of late?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

I don't think either is prospect of the year.

Jim

Dan, you said your picking Bika over Manfredo. I think that Manfredo will give Bika problems all night with his boxing skills. I think hes way underrated. Do you see the winner of this fight eventually getting a title shot?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Stop drinking the kool aid.

MVP (palatine, IL)

Tarver is no hall of famer. He is living of his 3 fights with RJJ and one big KO. He's ok not great. Dawson will have a much better career then him when its all said and done

gus Passaic NJ

Im thinking of going to my 1st live boxing match at Prudential Center in Newark. Besides Cunningham vs Adamek, what do they have planned for the undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

It has not yet been set.

Banishment

I have been waiting all Chat for Jim! Please oh please oh please DAN, Let me feed!

Henry (Alaska)

Can hopkins knock out the ghost?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Anything is possible, but I do not see that scenario.

Dale (carson city, ca)

Noticed you gave respect to Latimore on your recent blog. He stood out to me the most on this years WNF/FNF schedule. Let this be a lesson to all I READ OVER THE SCHEDULE before asking a question of what's next for him. I see he is fighting in STL against Sparkman. Gotta love and respect the schedule since you have everything listed. Just giving props for the hard work you and your staff do on updating the site daily.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Thanks. I spend a lot of time updating the schedule to be as up to date and accurate as possible.

Banishment

OOOOhhh !! Just finished chewing on JIM. He was awfullt salty, must of had a real bad case of the STUPIDS!

David (Hercules, CA)

Finally, a little vindication for one of this generation's best fighters (okay, at least very good and underrated) JC Gomez. Finally back in the Top 10 of Dan's rankings! Do you think the winner of the Vitali-Peter fight will face him next or is JC going to have to fight for the WBC interim secondary non-emeritus belt.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

You never know what nonsense the WBC will pull, so who knows?

Henry (Alaska)

Do you think Roy has a serious chance to pull the upset with Calzaghe?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Yes.

Michael (Roxbury, NJ)

Dan any chance showtime will spoil the outcome of Klitscho Vs. Peter during the Dawsone fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Doubtful since they'll show Peter-Klitschko first.

Joe: San Francisco, CA

Ah, yes, we're in the 2nd hour of the chat today, also known as, "When Freaks Attack"....

bruce ( new jersey)

dan, any idea of a next fight for shane mosley

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Nothing is set. He just fought. But he has come up as an opponent to challenge Margarito.

Ricardo (LA)

We know about the Leuvano fight. Is there any chance either of the other 2 u/c fights are entertaining? I'm really torn on buying this ppv because B-Hop could make this a stinker.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

I think Rubio-Ornelas will be a slugfest kind of fight and Mares-Melendez could be solid. Melendez was in a war in his last fight Montiel.

Gus Passaic NJ

Juanma for prospect of the year.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

He's not a prospect. He's a titleholder and way beyond prospect status.

Aaron (Dighton, MA)

a co-worker and I were discussing a potential Paul Williams/Pavlik fight. He claims Pavlik would win easily, I say Williams. Who do you think would win?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

I think it's a very interesting fight. I would favor Pavlik but no slam dunk. It was a fight seriously discussed several months ago.

Henry (Alaska)

Am i the only fight freak from Alaska?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

I have no idea, but can you see Russia from your house?

Ricardo (LA)

Any truth to the rumor of Wednesday Night Fights being canceled on ESPN?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

It is not a rumor. The show has been canceled.

Bronson (Las Vegas, NV)

"Can you see Russia from your house?" Classic. Glad to see you're keeping up with more than just BOXING politics!

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

I have CNN on in my hotel room as I am doing this chat. I'm a political junkie besides just boxing.

Jeff (OH)

Is there a rematch clause for Sam Peter if he happens to lose on Saturday?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

No, no rematch clause. It's a mandatory.

Mike (Vancouver, WA)

Dan, I'm tired of all the crap people are giving De la Hoya for his upcoming fight against Pacquiao. Did Thomas Hearns or Marvin Hagler take this much heat for fighting Roberto Duran?

Alejandro Paramus New Jersey

Dan do you know when Breidis Prescott is going to fight again.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

No.

Greg (Dallas)

Dan Francisco, can you PLEASE explain to me how Showtime is billing the Daswon/Tarver fight as "the most anticipated fight of the year"???

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Showtime doesn't typically let the facts get in the way of hype. I sorta think Vazquez-Marquez 3, for example, was more anticipated and was on Showtime! Just hype.

Gus Passaic NJ

At the beginning of the year no one knew who juanma was except real hard core fans and he won the title this year, so he was a prospect at the beginning of the year

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Yeah and he's not at the end of the year.

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

Man, Gus really wanted to be right, didn't he?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Yeah, but he was wrong.

Andre Tucker (Pensacola, Fk

When is the next Nate Campbell fight...and with who??

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

I'll let you know when it's set.

Fredo (Glendale,AZ)

will juanma face rafel or isarel in the near future

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

He'd like to but I don't think it will happen. Those guys have designs on money fights and that is not a money fight right now.

Josey(Arizona)

Don't alienate freaks with your politics...or risk becoming Dixie Chick Dan

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Have I disclosed my politics? I just said I follow it closely.

JuanMa Lopez

::waving hand like a jedi:: I am not a prospect Gus

Mason (Flemington, NJ)

Dan, if you had the choice of fighting Evander Holyfield or having him pull your beard hairs out, one by one, which would you chose ? Either way...ouch !

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Dude you're a freaking psycho.

Greg (Houston TX)

What are your thoughts on Juan Diaz and Victor Ortiz

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

I'm a fan of both. They make crowd pleasing fights and are nice guys.

Dave, NJ

Dan you mentioned in your Valuev-Holyfield article that if Holyfield wins, he would become the oldest heavyweight champion of all time, surpassing George Foreman. As someone who recognizes the fact that there are too many fake belts out there and only recognizes one champion, why would you even put that in the article? George was THE champ, Holyfield would only be a beltholder.

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Because it is a fact.

John Houma, LA

Dan, whats the latest on the Ding-A-Ling Man, haven't seen or heard from him since his world title loss.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

He has been in Singapore competing on the Contender, which is shooting its fourth season.

Vitali's Shower Door - Germany

I promise not to get Vitali injured.

David (Hercules, CA)

Without disclosing your politics (gasp!), have you ever meet John McCain or Harry Reid ringside in Vegas?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

I have not met them, but I have interviewed McCain two or three times for boxing articles when I worked at USA TODAY.

John (Denver)

Dan, I have to know, what is your favorite Undertaker moment?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Well I did enjoy last week's tombstone on Vicky.

Henry (Alaska)

Dan the man you should bring your wife to Alaska, bet you guys would like it. Maybe you can see Russia too.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Relax. A little cold in your igloo?

Matt (Washington, DC)

Oh come on, it's gotta be Hell in a Cell vs. Mankind. Probably the greatest wrestling match of all time.

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

That was pretty sick. An all-time moment for sure in all of WWE history, not just for the Undertaker!

Michael (Long Beach, CA)

The igloo comment was classic, Dan.

Joe: San Francisco, CA

Just out of curiosity, do you know why they decided to film this season of the Contender in Singapore? And oh yea, Tony Danza?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

They wound up in Singapore because that is where they were also doing another Mark Burnett series.

John (ATL GA)

I didn't know McCain was a boxing fan, but I really liked his idea baout boxing having a main union. Boxers need someone looking after them. It seems all the managers, promoters, etc are only looking out for their wallets.

Fredo (Glendale,AZ)

do you see david haye getting a title shot next year

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

If Haye beats Barrett and Wlad beats Povetkin it is quite possible they will fight each other in the first part of 2009.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)

Dan I hate to tell everyone you're political views but I have it on good authority you are anti-sanctioning bodies, anti-Olympic scoring. And that you believe in capital banishment(gasp!) I sorry Dan I just felt the world should know.

Banishment

Henry -become warm inside my belly!!!!

Kevin

Is Roach just pumping his guy up, or does he harbor a little animosity towards Oscar? Seems he's been a little more vocal than in the past....

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Maybe a little of both.

rob (jersey)

Aaron Davis a good choice to head the NJSAC? Any news on Larry Hazard's lawsuit?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

I know nothing about Davis other than the resume points put in the press release. And I have no news on Hazzard's lawsuit, which is probably going nowhere.

Nick (CA)

Dan- what is your personal favorite Tyson memory/encounter>?

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

Don't know if it's my favorite but the most memorable was certainly my first interview with him in a dark basement in a Detroit gym after he had sparred and he came close to taking a swing at me, a story I have been over in these chats before.

Matt (Washington, DC)

I'm really intrigued to see Haye try to make noise in the heavyweight division, but I for one want Wlad to only fight current belt holders and mandatories that are almost due (so he can hold on to the belts). Early part of 2009 should be Valuev (or Holyfield!) or Peter (knock on wood).

Jeff (OH)

What immediate plans does Top Rank have for the Peterson brothers?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Lamont is on the Nov. 1 PPV. If the Dec. 13 card comes off with Holt-Torres 3, Anthony could be on the undercard.

Jon (Los Angeles)

Wow, does Haye really want to fight Wlad? Wouldn't he get slaughtered? I guess if he made enough money from that fight to retire...

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Haye has been yapping about Wlad for months.

Tony(Tampa)

Is the Aaron David Rob in NJ mentioned the same Aaron "Superman" Davis who KO'd Mark Breland and had a lengthy solid boxing career?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

No different guy. When I first saw the release about his appointment, I thought the same thing at first.

Brian (Concord, NC)

Dan The Man, I love it when you call out Mainstream Media Nitwits like Mike and Mike (you can throw Michael Wilbon and Colin Cowherd on that list as well)who bash Boxing and then want to crow on about the joke known as MMA. (Kimbo Slice Please!!!)

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

Thanks. In Wilbon's defense, I think he actually knows a bit about boxing. I talked some boxing with him at Tyson-McBride in DC and he seemed to know what was up.

Max (CA)

Dan, any word on the buys for Marquez-Casamayor? I can't imagine it was very high

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

I am told it did 100,000ish.

Zowild

Did your life flash before your eyes when Tyson swung at you...how coked up do you think he was

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Tyson did not swing at me. I said he ALMOST took a swing at me.

Randy (NY)

Dan, do you know if HBO will air the Pavlik/hopkins fight the following week? It's been a tough month and I don't have the $50 for the ppv. It's upsetting after seeing most of his fights on HBO and youtube, and especially having watched his destruction of lockett in person.

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Yes, that bout will of course be replayed.

Max (CA)

A follow up question - If the buys were that low, did Golden Boy still make a profit? Would they have been better off trying to sell the fight to versus or someone other tv option that was not ppv?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

It is doubtful they made money on that fight but they had obligations to their fighters and advanced the cause of Marquez.

Fredo (Glendale,AZ)

will glen johnson get a rematch with dawson if he wins tonight

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Unlikely. (And, by the way, the fight is tomorrow).

Joe (Philly)

Did u get a chance to see Eddie Chambers fight last week, if so what do you think and can he still fight for a title?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

I did see it. Eddie did what he needed to do against a lesser opponent. He's got talent and he's young, so I do think he has a chance still to get a more meaningful fight, perhaps for a belt at some point.

corey(from WestWick)

Any word on witch building there holding next weeks weight in at

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Caesars Palace in one of the big ballrooms.

Charles (Philly)

I can't even remember the last time someone asked for OT. It has long become the standard in DTM chats!

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for the chat. Enjoy the fights this weekend and make sure you read all of this week's new stuff. Talk to you next week from Atlantic City, where I will be covering Pavlik-Hopkins. Peace.
