Hey--Another fun week of games ahead. I just got off of a call and am happy to talk some college football.
Why do you keep picking Penn State for the Capitol One bowl instead of the Rose Bowl?
Because I feel like Ohio State is going to beat Penn State.. thing is, unless the Nittany Lions don't lose to MSU and I don't think the Spartans would win that one then PSU probably goes to a BCS bowl anyhow.
I was wondering why Josh Freeman of KSU isn't getting more recognition. He already has 24 touchdowns on the season. And although his team has not been dominate, they lost to a good Texas Tech team. I'm just saying Tebow's team had the same 4-2 record as the Wildcats this time last year.
I actually have written something about him in my blog that will be up soon. The thing that hurts him is he's playing on a team that isn't winning enough and in a league with 6-7 other outstanding QBs.
Shonn Greene, Best player nobody talks about? Do you think he will be playing on Sundays next year?
Yeah he's very good. A load at 235. I think there are a few very underrated RBs in the Big Ten with Evan Royster from PSU also deserving more pub.
I think they have a good shot. LSU completely mauled them last year. I think Carolina will do a much better job this time around.
Does Colt come back for his senior season? If not, do you think incoming freshman Garrett Gilbert might get the nod over John Chiles or Sherrod Harris?
I suspect Colt comes back.
Bruce, With Boise States recent success and that of Chris Petersen (23-3 I believe) do you see any of the "big programs" making a run at him? And what do you think he might do?
I'm sure they would but it sounds like he really likes it there.
will 2009 be the first year in 40 years with no bowden coaching?
interesting thought.. I think Bobby will stick around.
Who is more responsible for Notre Dame's loss to UNC - the defense who couldn't stop the run or a 3rd string QB or the offense with 3 bad turnovers?
Probably the D. ND is making nice strides on offense. I must admit I thought the Irish would be better on D.
What odds would you put on Texas making it through the next 6 games unscathed?
I'll say 25% chance.. The Big 12 is really tough this year and UT's schedule this month is nasty.
Can Utah or BYU and Boise State be ligitimat contenders for teh BCS "at large" slots?
Yes, certainly... but I think the key will be whether there are two BCS teams from the Big Ten, and that might mean OSU needs TWO more losses, which I don't see happening.
Oklahoma State: National title contender... or pretender?
They're physical and can really run the ball, they have a good, efficient QB, some really good receivers and the D is coming on. They have a shot.
Bruce, do you think the Hokies are basically a lock to win the ACC Coastal?
Not a lock... Talentwise that league is too close. I like Tech's chances though.
Bruce, why are some people pronouncing the spread "dead?" Seems like some people are getting carried away because of how badly things have gone at Michigan and Auburn, both of which just implemented the spread. (Never mind that Penn State is rolling with its new version of the spread.) The idea of the spread is to get 1 on 1 situations where team A's best players have to be tackled in the open field, which is difficult to do. Maybe it's not as daunting as it once was (like when WVU beat Georgia in the Sugar Bowl), but I don't see it going away.
There are so many different versions of the spread. Some run their QB out of it a lot (WVU). Some a little (Mizzou). Some not at all (Texas Tech)... And also teams run parts of it quite a bit. Lots of the top 10 scoring offenses run some version of it.
Bruce - if Clausen continues at his current pace - will he be on some Heisman lists next year?
He could be in the mix if we're talking about 20 guys to watch. He plays at a very visiable program and has a few very good receivers, but he really needs to cut waaay down on the INTs.
Bruce almighty - thanks for taking this! What do you think about the matchup between South Carolina's Defense versus LSU's Offense considering USC's D is better than UF's? And what do you think about LSU's Defense going up against TOBC's offense considering they looked so pourous against UF's O? I do realize that UF has more weapons than USC...but Miss. St. put up 24 on LSU just a few weeks ago and AUBURN even put up some points! Your thoughts???
I'm not sure how LSU bounces back from getting drilled by UF like they did. The Tigers secondary is still pretty green and they really missed Beckwith from that injury. Carolina's O-line struggled early but if Garcia makes smart decisions, I could see them pulling out a W.
If Mizzou goes into Austin, Texas and handles the Longhorns, do they jump ahead of Oklahoma State in the rankings?
Only if State were to lose. OSU won at their place just a week ago..you can't discount that.
How do you like UGA's chances to win the SEC East. It looks like the LSU game is easier than it appeared with their only marquee win at Auburn and we know how good they are!
I've been skeptical of UGA all year. I think the O-line was a question all along and now they're really hurting up front. I think UF beats them this year.
Do you think Alabama will win the SEC West over LSU?
Yes, I do.
What if the roles were reversed in the USC-OSU game? Beanie and Pryor play the entire game, Sanchez and McKnight don't play. Play the game in Columbus. Why are these factors ignored, don't they easily account for 32 points?
They're ignored because they didn't happen. If Tim Tebow didn't play last year, he wouldn't have won the Heisman either.
why do people keep saying the spread cant work in the NFL? It seems with the right personnel it would be just as damaging there. Is the NFL just afraid of exposing the QB too much?
I think that's exactly it. I have a buddy who coaches in the NFL and says you just don't have to account for the QB taking off like you do in college. People are scared to death of it.
Does Max Hall still have a chance at winning the Heisman, or are there to many good players
He's a long shot but he can help his cause by lighting up a good TCU D on Thursday.
Man I am just not getting it done, am I? Should I start updating my resume?
Nah, I think you've got time.
The Big Ten may get two BCS bids (Ohio State and Penn State). Why? Really . . . why? What out of conference victory can the Big 10 hang their hat on this year? Last year? The Big 10 formula is such: Weak Out-of-Conference Schedule + No conference championship game = Two BCS bids. What do you think? Thank you!
I don't think the league is very strong right now especially at the top but you can only take two teams from the Big 12 and SEC so you're not going to take two from the Pac-10, ACC or for crying out lout the Big East, so where do you get that other BCS team? At least you know a Penn State or OSU has a strong fan base.
Will Tommy Bowden head coach next season?
I don't see that happening.
Best (or least worst) conference to to bottom : ACC, Big East, Pac-10
I think the ACC has more decent teams than the Pac-10, which also has the two worst teams perhaps in the whole BCS world. Then again I'd take USC over anybody in the ACC, but I think I'll say ACC.
Ignoring conference associations, how many lopsided BCS Title games will it take to show that the two best teams aren't consistantly playing for the title?
A lot. It's always going to be a flawed system no matter how much they tweak it.
Bruce, can you please explain to some of these people that the reason why some of the Big 10 OOC scheds seem weak is because we were FORCED to add a 12th game. Most scheduling is done 5+ years in advance, so the only teams left are the weak teams we could sign. Over the next few years, the scheds should get tougher.....
Everybody has some really shaky opponents in their non-conference as you say. The thing that hurts the Big Ten is there's not a lot of top teams right now and the perception that their top teams are inferior and that's due in large part to OSU's performance in recent bowl games.
Just how bad is the loss of DE Wilson for OSU?
IT hurts. He's a very good pass rusher but they didn't have him last year and they have a lot of athletes. They just need someone to really step up.
Hey bruce why dont you stop ignoring questions from gameday and pick a team and why
Hey Alex, I try to hold off on the predictions until I do my picks column later this week on ESPN.com.
IF Bama wins the SEC West, who would they play? Florida or UGA?
I think Florida.
UNC in the top 25? Fluke or here to stay?
Here to stay as long as Butch Davis is coaching there.
Do you anticipate a Texas Tech let down against A&M this Saturday?
No, I think Tech will run away from them. A&M will have a hard time keeping up with Tech's offense.
Imagine Texas, Alabama, and Penn State going undefeated. Who gets the shaft and why?
I think Penn State would. For as much as people would love the story of JoePa playing for a title. PSU's resume of wins wouldn't stand up compared to UT and Alabama. UT will play more top 15 teams this month than PSU will play in the last two years.
Do you think that there will be any unbeaten BCS teams at the end of the season. If there are several 1-loss teams, who plays in the NC game?
I don't think there will be. I picked Mizzou to win the title so I'm not backing off ... until the Tigers lose two games. I also like UF's chances.
Hey Bruce! Awesome job! Who is your favorite player to watch and your favorite team to watch in the nation?
I like watching Noel Devine and Pat White and Javon Ringer and Knowshon. I think Florida is fun to watch and I think Wake is very interesting to watch.
Hey Brett,, can you edit down your question..thanks
A lot of people thought Alabama would be a contender a year or two from now, but it seems they've arrived early. Are they going to be one of the "elites" for years to come?
I think so. Saban is recruiting very well and people have bought in to his style there.
With all the money put into facilities, what should be the REALISTIC expectations of Duck fans for the Oregon program?
To challenge USC for the Pac-10 title. They've had so many injuries at QB it's hard to expect them to stay as a top 25 team this year.
Bruce, who are the best coaches at developing talent?
Mangino is very underrated as is Jim Grobe and Frank Beamer. Auburn's staff has done a nice job over the years.
Bruce, I would really like to hear your answer to this question. The Mountain West Conference is really tough this year. If BYU finishes the season undefeated and ranked high in the top 10 what ramifications might there be for the BCS, or should I say B.S. system, if BYU gets denied a shot in the Title game in favor of teams with one or two losses? Thanks!
There won't be many ramifications. The MWC is having a great year, but the system is set up to evauate a five-year run, not one year. How many ranked teams will BYU have beaten even if they do run the table? Two?
EVERYONE mentions PSU as one of the best teams in the country but you continue to say that their are no great teams in the Big 10. What's with the obvious hate?
It's not obvious hate. Hate is not a good word for that. I just think OSU is going to beat Penn State in Columbus. Maybe I'll be wrong.
Do you think Miami will ever be a BCS Title contender again
Yeah, they ave a ton of young talent. They're just aving to play waaay too many inexperienced guys who are making a lot of mistakes.
Do you think Kansas is overrated? They've played three good teams in the past two years and have two losses. I think they got too much credit for a cakewalk schedule last year.
I do think KU is a little overrated in the polls, yes.
If Penn State wins the one tough game on their schedule they play for the national title correct? It will more than likely be against a much stronger team from the SEC or Big 12 or if all hell breaks loose USC. Then the Lions will lose by 3-4 TD's b/c the Big ten is not good. Have we not seen this movie before the last two years????
As someone pointed out before, Penn State shouldn't take the blame necessarily for OSU.
How about skeptical on your view of PSU Mr. Feldman? Better word?
Yes, JB. That is a better word. I am skeptical.
You said it Andrew....year in, year out...nothing changes. Ohio State lays an egg in two championships (that were practically home games for the other teams), and somehow Penn State is hurt. If we use that logic, we are far better than USC because we absolutely destroyed Oregon State. Please, enlighten me and respond.
Bruce, how can Mike Riley not be on your list of coaches at developing talent? Oregon St. generally finishes their season strong, and they have never been in the top 25 in terms of recruiting. That's gotta say something.
Yeah, he deserves mention.
If BYU ran the table this year, could they set themselves up for a title run next year? I think that is the only way they get close to a title shot.
I think you're onto something for a non-BCS team, you need to help your cause with a two-year run to win sentiment.
How is Florida's whooping of OSU in ARIZONA pracitcally a home game for UF?
Tell Tim in Athens that USC also has something called "depth" that would allow for little drop-off, especially in the RB slot. Perhaps OSU should have invested in more of it...
What do you think the odds are that both USC and Cal go to BCS games this year? What would need to happen?
It's a very long shot. I think a 2-loss Cal wold be a hard sell especially with a loss to USC being relatively late. After that they'd be lucky to stick in the top 20.
Bruce, In all honesty if you were the coach of BYU and you run the table and are undefeated and do not get a shot at the national title game, what do you say to your kids? I mean starting the season preseason ranked #16 and getting only as high as #6 or so.... sounds morally incorrect, your response. Thanks Bruce
You say we did all that we could do and that we should be proud of that. Same if you're at Tulsa. You can only play who is on your schedule. I'm sure Auburn and PSU from years back can relate and they beat more ranked teams.
So Mr. Feldman, if PSU goes unbeaten will you remain skeptical until after their bowl game?
Nah, if they win at OSU I'll have them in the Rose Bowl.
what does the future hold for michigan football
They'll be back in the top 10 within two years. Rodriguez struggled his first year at WVU too. He is a very good coach and great at developing talent.
How devastating would it be If Muschamp left in Undefeted Texas team towards the end of the season to take a head coaching job?
Good question. Not sure if this is a great example but when Mike Stoops left OU it seemed to hurt the Sooners alot when they faced USC in the title game.
To JWatts in Detroit: A shellacking in State College this weekend.
agreed. But I was taking more long term.
three more questions...
Pitt!!! Pitt going to a BCS??? They'll be lucky to make it to a bowl game.
Somebody from the Big East has to go to a BCS bowl and Pitt did win at USF.
Ohio St plays USC, Miami, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, California, Tennessee 2x each the next 12 years. Please tell people to stop criticizing their schedule-making.
Good point and sometimes it's not the school's fault when they schedule a strong team that has an off year when the game is played years later.
Who replaces Fulmer at Tennessee?
My hunch is Lane Kiffin if that job in fact comes open.
"Somebody from the Big East has to go to a BCS bowl..." Doesn't that sum up the futility of the BCS?
Yes, it does. thanks for all the questions. Sorry I couldn't get to more of them. Enjoy the games.
