Chat with Bill Williamson

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Hey guys, let's start

Bill Williamson
  (2:01 PM)

Hey guys, let's start

Tim (Independence, MO)

Hey, Bill. Tony Gonzalez expressed disappointment that the Chiefs were unwilling to accept a reported 3rd-round pick from Green Bay in a trade, saying that getting a 2nd-round pick for a 32-year-old tight end is "not going to happen". The Washington Redskins traded a 2nd-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for 35-year-old defensive end Jason Taylor, when Taylor would make no assurance that he would play more than one season. I believe the Chiefs made the correct decision, given the value that Gonzalez still holds on the field for the Chiefs. Do you think Tony's bitterness will lead to another trade request following the season, or perhaps even a premature retirement?

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

I think Tony is all but gone after this season. He'll play hard for the rest of 2008 but that will be it for him in Kansas City.

Joe (Iowa)

Bill - Do you see the Broncos going to a full-time 3-4 look on defense for the rest of the year instead of the base 4-3? If so, how many drafts is it going to take to make this defense into a real 3-4?

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

I think they bounce back and forth trying to find the right mix.

Justin (DC)

Bill, whats wrong with the Broncos offense? What is the one thing they need to do to step it up with NE coming on Monday?

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

Too many turnovers. This tema has scored 52 points in the past three games because they have been too sloppy.

Jim (Louisville, KY)

What more does Philip Rivers have to do to prove he's one of the best in the league and be recognized as the best QB in the AFC west?

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

I think he is very close to showing that. He is a legit MVP candidate.

Jim (Louisville, KY)

Do you feel like the Chargers have finally turned the corner and are about to string a bunch of wins together and get back to the top of the AFC west where they should be?

Bill Williamson
  (2:07 PM)

I was really impressed by what they did against New England. It was ac omplete win. But they have to show it again. This game in Buffalo is huge for the Chargers.

Rick (Philadelphia, PA)

What are the Raiders options at Wide Receiver next year? Are they limited because of the money given to Javon Walker?

Bill Williamson
  (2:09 PM)

Somewhat. But if Walker doesn't turn it around the Raiders will need a receiver anyway. They may just have to suck it up and count Walker as a bust and try to move on because that hole at reciever has to be filled.

Rick (Philadelphia, PA)

What are the chances of the Raiders losing Nnamdi Asomugha this year? This would cripple the Raiders indefinitely should this happen!

Bill Williamson
  (2:12 PM)

He could make another move toward free agency. I agree with you. It would be a huge loss. He is a very underrated player. He's one of the best CBs in the league.

Vince (Sacramento, CA)

Just finished reading the article about the kids from Willows...it brought to tears. I grew up there, my parents still live there. They are close friends with the Parks'...I remember when their son died. What I didn't kown was the rest of the story. I was very close friends with Manuel Molina back in high school (graduated in '88) and was devistated to hear about his daughter. Thanks for contributing to such a well-written article.

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

Thanks, Vince. I just helped out on the story. It is a powerful story. It means a lot to me. My wife is from the town and she graduated in 88 as well. I urge everyone to read this stunning story.

Travis, SLC

Do Denver and San Diego win this week? Both have cross country trips.

Jeff (Minneapolis)

Is this an AFC West only chat?

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

For the most part yes since I cover the AFC West? You have a question?

Justin (Denver)

How do you see Cassel doing this week(I have McNabb on bye)? Would Orton be that much better for this week only?

Bill Williamson
  (2:17 PM)

I can see him having success against Denver's defense, can't you.

Mark (San Diego )

R.I.P Chris Mims

Bill Williamson
  (2:17 PM)

Indeed, thanks, Mark.

Ryan (Littleton, CO)

The hype is off the charts right now for Torian coming back for the Broncos. From what you have seen and heard, can you give us a realistic evaluation of what to expect from Torian this year and for the future?

Bill Williamson
  (2:18 PM)

You are right. I have never seen so much excitement about a fifth-round pick. But the Broncos like him,

Brandon (Austin, Texas)

Do you think Jay Cutler has become a little too cocky? He is acting like Rivers.

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

Two confident dudes. They are fun to cover.

Almar (San Jose,CA)

Should both Bay Area football franchises be looked down upon when the Bay Area hockey team already has more wins than the Niners and Raiders combined?

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

Well, it's not good.

Shade (Millersburg, Pa)

What is Eddie Royal's status for Mondays game?

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

Not sure yet. He practiced fully Wednesday. That's a promising sign that he will play.

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

Ryan (Littleton, CO)

Bill what do YOU think of Torian?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

Love his size and the way he fits the Broncos' offense. He has a chance.

Rick, Marina, Ca

Jamal Williams played his best game of the season against the Pats, if he can keep up that solid play the Charger D plays much better and more stout.

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

Thanks for pointing that out, Rick. He was terrific. It was no coinidence that it was the Charegrs' best defensive effort. Williams makes the defense go.

Jo (Colorado Springs)

What is the latest on Scheffler's health for this Monday, and if he plays how effective can he be?

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

He practiced some Wednesday. It's still too early.

Jay (Middletown, CT)

Im a Denver fan living in CT going to the game on monday night. Will I see the Broncos of the first 3 games or the past 3 games in terms of offense?

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

Hey Jay, asking just one time works.

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

Hey Jay, asking just one time works.

Ryan (Colorado Springs, CO)

Hi Bill! What happened to Peyton Hillis? He was starting in Denver and now I don't hear anything about him. I know Larsen had a good game on ST in KC, but is he a better fullback also?

Bill Williamson
  (2:26 PM)

They really like Larsen's toughness.

RS (Denver)

I love how all the Chargers fans start talking about Rivers after this last game. Where were they after the Oakland and Miami games? Is there one GM in the league that would take Rivers over Cutler?

Bill Williamson
  (2:29 PM)

Rivers didn't have much protection in those two games. Cutler is gettign very nice protection. It's strange because going into the season, San Diego's offensive line was considered much better. Of coruse, the Chargers are dealing witha lot of injuries It will be interesting to see how this unit plays when everyone shakes off the rust which should be soon.

Jay (Middletown, CT)

Hey Bill, replying just one time works too, accept you didnt answer the question. Thanks for the expert analysis.

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

See what are doing Hay is keeping people with questions and are spending their hour here from participating by flooding my inbox. Not very cool. If you have a question ask once and I will try to answer it. Otherwise you ae disrupting everyone's hour.

Cory (Panama City , FL)

Do you think Denver will trade Bly or another veteran player to try to upgrade the D/L?

Bill

Hey Bill, why don't you answer the questions fully? Ryan form C-springs asked what happened to Peyton Hillis?

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

They like Larsen more right now.

Cory (Panama City , FL)

Will Denver trade one of thier veterans in the secondary to upgrade the D/L?

Bill Williamson
  (2:32 PM)

Maybe in the offseason. The trading deadline has passed.

Rick, Marina, Ca

The difference between Cutler and Rivers is that Rivers is way stronger mentally, nothing seems to shake Rivers confidence nothing, while Cutler seems shaky when things dont go right.

Bill Williamson
  (2:33 PM)

Cutler is emotional that's for sure. But he also is pretty poised for a young quarterback.

Steve (Syracuse, NY)

More likely defensive unit to shape up by the end of the year: San Diego or Denver?

Bill Williamson
  (2:34 PM)

San Diego because there is more talent.

Kyle (Fort Collins, CO)

How many wins do you think it'll take to win the AFC West???

Bill Williamson
  (2:34 PM)

11 or 12

Jonathan (Aurora,CO)

Confidence huh? That's why Rivers feels he has to talk crap with fans??

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

You may not want to hear this but Rivers is really a very good guy. It's one of those deals where if you are a Charegrs' fan you love him and if you aren't welll ....

Bob (Colorado Springs)

Bill great job, enjoy reading your stuff. I heard the Broncos are looking at Chad Jackson, do you think they will sign him? I mean thats who they were thinking of drafting before they traded it away so that they could get Javon Walker.

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

They worked him out Tuesday. I think if Royal and Stokley don't return soon he could be signed. But it's just a backup plan now. Thanks for the kind words.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Bill, got time for an NFC North question? What's the probability that Brad Childress is head coach of the Vikings in 2009? Thanks for taking the time to look at this.

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

He has to get to at least nine wins, I would think.

Jay (Middletown, CT)

Can we be friends Bill, I dont like fighting!

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

Sure, brother.

PT (Franklin, NC)

The Raiders aren't serious about trading Micheal Bush are they? I think he has more potential then the ever injured Justin Fargas.

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

There was a report from San Diego that the Chargers almost traded for him Tuesday but the deadline has passed. I think it would have been a mistake if Oakland dealt him.

Jonathan (Aurora,CO)

I have no doubt he is a good person. I think there is little to seperate these two both physically and mentally. I hope fans from both of these teams realize what awesome QB battles we are in store for the next 5-10 years.

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

You hit it, Jonathan. This is going to be a rivarly with two great QBs for the ages. It will be a lot of fun.

Ryan (Council Bluffs IA)

Do the Raiders win more than 4 games this season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

To win five games the Raiders will have to go 4-7 the rest of the way. Maybe it happen.

Justin (DC)

Has Vincent Jackson arrived in San Diego or was that one game just a tease?

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

He had a great playoffs last year as well. I like him.

Chad(Dallas)

NFC East question sorry. Is Roy Williams playing Sunday, and how productive do you think he will be?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

Yes, I do believe is playing.

Tim (Boise)

Bill, Im a Broncos fan (both Boise and Denver) should I seek therapy for having some remorse to Raiders fans about their horrible team the past few years?

Bill Williamson
  (2:43 PM)

Yes, maybe. I don;t think many of your fellow Broncos' fans feel that way and I bet Raiders fans don't want pity. Thanks, Tim.

ted (crowley, louisiana)

do you think the saints have a chanch to beat the panthers

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

Sure, I was in New Orelans for the Oakland game. The Saints' offense is the goods.

Pants Cortez (Boston MA)

Billy Baroo! Wrote in a couple weeks ago saying Broncos should yank Paymah for Jack Weeums. You agreed and said they loved Williams, thought of him similiar to his dearly departed cousin Darrent (ok, so maybe they are not cousins). Who else do they love, who is "yet to reveal himself" (aka, i already know they love ER). Thanks my man, keep up the good work.

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

Torain and Larsen.

Kieth

Have you ever asked a pro to sign your forehead? If not, what are the chances of you asking Cutler to sign it?

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

Torain and Larsen.

John in Denver

Will we ever see the same Broncos/Raiders rivalries of old?

Bill Williamson
  (2:47 PM)

Even though the Raiders are down the hate among the fans is stil there. When the Raiders visit Denver on Nov. 23 the fire will still be there despite the Raiders' record. The rivalry never dies and that's why it is so good.

Zac (MN)

If Pacman gets cut by the cowboys and isn't suspended forever by goodell, does any team pick him up or will he be out of the league forever by default?

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

I don't see any team signing him any time soon. Not only is he out of control off the field but he's no star on the field.

Gabriel(San Diego)

Hey Bill what are your thoughts on Jamarcus' development? do you think its the talent level around him that's hindering his progress or just his lack of experience? what could be done to make him better?

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

I think he has a lot of skills but he is not ready to be an effective quarterback yet. He is way too inaccurate. But I don't think he is a lost cause yet.

Keren (Maui)

Your thoughts on the non-trade of Gonzo from KC?

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

I thouhgt the whole deal was strange. The Chiefs should have taken that third rounder from the Packers and moved on. Now it wll be an issue until Tony leaves.

JOE(CHICAGO)

Whats LJ's status? Are his problems gonna cause him to miss game time? Thanks

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

Hermad Edwards just announced that Johnson wll be inactive Sunday against Tennessee as a a result of the charges filed against him this week. he is not suspended and he will still get paid but he wll not play. Interesting, right?

Travis, SLC

Just a suggestion to all Raider/Broncos fans... go to a Broncos/Raiders game... you will then see the rivalry! It's madness!

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

Bingo.

Jay (Middletown, CT)

Bill, I saw where Cutler sat down with Marshall Faulk and said he wants to get the veterans like Champ Bailey a Super Bowl ring and that he thinks about that often. Open up your crystal ball, do you see it happening?

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

If the defense improves and the offense can cut down on turnvoers, yes. This is a young team and there is plenty of time.

Dave (Denver)

Off the AFC West yet still a question. What is going on with Vince Young? Almost sounds like career suicide by taking on the media like that. Thanks in advance.

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

Career suicide is being a quarterback who can't complete passes.

Donald (Hollywood)

Do you agree that all of the criticism (hello Denver fans) for the trash talking Phillip Rivers receives is a bit overblown and unwarranted? His behavior this year has been exemplary and, if there was a time to talk trash, his play this year would back it up.

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

I think that is overrated. He is a fiery guy. I pay attention to what he does on the field.

Chris, San Diego

Who got the better deal between Portis and Bailey? Washington or Denver?

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

Both playes are helping out their teams very much. I don;t think either team regrets it.

Ryan (San Diego)

I find it quite comical that in your blog you quoted cutler as saying he doesn't like the spotlight. Seems like quite the opposite from the week prior when he was saying he has the best arm in the league, the broncos are a super bowl contender and they were virtually a shoe in to win the West. Could it be his bad game Sunday changed his mind?

Bill Williamson
  (2:58 PM)

I don't think he likes the spotlight ... this week.

Gilbert (Azusa, CA)

Assuming Croyle is not the answer (safe assumption, I know), what options do you think the Chiefs have for at QB next year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

Probably the draft unless the Browns want to trade Brady Quinn.

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

Hey folks, fun hour. Let's do it again next week.
