Great to have you here for another MMA Live chat. Coming up on the show today, Gina Carano is in Bristol to discuss her career and a whole bunch more. Also analysis and predictions on UFC 89. And...we ask the question 'Is Andrei Arlovski the heavyweight best-equipped to beat Fedor Emelianenko? Let's rip...
Hey Jon, can't make the chat. I read the Yahoo article mentioning how Gina Carano made only $25K far less than the other fighters on the card (did Arlovski have a total package of 1.5 mil?). Your thoughts on the second highest pulling attraction making a sliver of the pie.
I expect it to change, Jim. She is a huge attraction and her compensation doesn't match up. That said, I don't expect a huge bump because it's still such a male-dominated sport.
Hey Jon, What's your take on Silva's retirement talk...He has six fights left on his contract and plans to retire in 2009. Do you really see him fighting every two months to finish off the contract??
It's hard not to take him at his word. And, like it or not as an MMA fan, one mega boxing match against Roy Jones Jr. would pay him roughly $6-10 million. I think we had better enjoy The Spider while we can. Some think it's still just a ploy to get more cake from UFC.
Stick to MMA. Your fantasy football team stinks.
Fair enough. Go back to work.
My man - - possible Mosasi/Belfort fight in the works - drooling yet, and Mousasi is training with Red Devil - how far is his (Mousasi) ceiling?
I haven't seen Mousasi as much as you have, but I think the ceiling is very high...but he also said recently being a boxing world champion is his real desire. We shall see. He's still under 25.
Jon, I've watched every episode of MMA Live, and can't thank you guys enough for giving us an outlet to keep up with the best sport in the world. My question: Who is your favorite non-UFC fighter?
Thanks, Roger. I would say Miguel Torres by a nose over Joey Villasenor.
hey jon whats up? Works been busy of late but i am here today.... How nasty of a fight will josh koscheck thiago alves be? GO phillies
Very pumped up that the UFC came up with the best possible replacement. I still would've liked to see Sanchez-Alves a shade more, but this card got salvaged big time with Kos stepping up. Congrats on your Phils, but the Rays will win the whole thing.
Hi Jon, just wanted to get your opinion on a potential superfight between GSP and Anderson Silva. I've noticed most people would favor Silva, and deservedly so he is an absolute wizard on his feet, but I think GSP, especially if it were a five round fight, has the athletism and talent to be competitive on his feet ,and still would have a significant wrestling advantage he could use to help win an epic five round battle . In my opinion, this is the best match that can be made in MMA history right now, with respect to BJ Penn and GSP, that will be a war as well. Thank you, keep up the good work
Absolutely the best possible fight that can be made in MMA right now. With respect to BJ Penn, GSP-Silva, to me, is the fight that has to happen.
Jon - don;t you know I'm going to get beat by Robbie Lawler - hope you don;t plan on making any side bets for that fight...
Jon - 3 things about TUF if I may. 1) Since when does Dana need Kevin Kaiser's "permission" to throw Junie off the show, and 2) Where was the Damian Maia training at? (he was in Eliot's corner too) Wouldn't you rather see that training than itching powder and sardines? IDK maybe it's just me. 3) Are you disappointed in Dana (laughing off Nog's attempt to make a civilized house, etc.)? Thanks man - what do us fans have to do to get MMA Live on the air? Thanks for letting me talk so much!
Some long-winded questions coming in today from MMA Nation. But there's some good stuff in here. As for this season of The Ultimate Fighter, Junie should already be gone. The pranks are getting so tired. Is this supposed to provide 'adversity' for a fighter getting ready for a huge opportunity? I do think both coaches are great...and Nogueira and Mir seem to be developing a little tension. And I'll have to ask Mir next week about Demian Maia.
hey jon ,who you got koscheck or alves?
Predictions on UFC 90 next week. But this week, let's get the UFC 89 stuff out of the way. Bisping-Leben is a toss-up. I'll say Leben via TKO in the 3rd. Brandon Vera by submission over Keith Jardine in the 2nd. Luis Cane to upset Sokoudjou. And Marcus Davis will get back on track against a game Paul Kelly.
Great piece on Leben on the countdown. Chris "The 205 Crippler" Leben by KO.
Cyrus is on the record.
jon if you think my good buddy rob talks alot you should see him when he is drunk and doing grappling moves on the floor of the bar at 3 AM its some funny stuff
Haha...I can only imagine...
Just wondering what you thought of the Babalu-Lindland fight that is in the works. It's a nice name fight, but style wise it seems pretty one sided. I can only picture Babalu by submission.
Yeah, I'd rather see Lindland fight Jake Shields.
Hey Jon, gotta ask which you gonna watch live, your boy BHop losing to Pavlik or UFC 89?
I am actually en route to AC tomorrow morning to cover B-Hop-Pavlik and will watch UFC 89 upon my return.
How hot is she in person?
Gina did not disappoint. She did a great job on the show. Class act.
sup jon...you picking up the new playboy tomorrow with Rachelle Leah?
We appreciate you giving the UFC some love on the cover. Not sure I'll pick it up 'tomorrow'. But I will eventually look at it, yes.
Well I'm a Ricardo Almeida student and sometimes people like to talk - - anyways, why do you suppose the NYSAC is so timid about regulating MMA, when its safer than boxing? And Jon - where's the afterparty Saturday night?
It's much safer than NFL football! Watch an NFL game this Sunday and count the violent collisions. It's unreal. As for NY regulation, the obstacles remain the same. A lot of it has to do with misperceptions about MMA and its violence. It'll come with time. I'm a Massachusetts native, and we're getting impatient, too.
Jon, great to chat with you again. I have a strong feeling that we're going to see Chris Leben dispatch of Bisping with a solid KO. I just can't take Bisping serious with wins over Elvis Sinosic (who is under .500 in his career), Jason Day, Erik Schafer, etc. Leben has too much power and experience. Who do you like and why?
Earlier in the chat, I predicted Bisping. Perhaps I did so because everyone in Bristol with an MMA opinion seems to be picking Leben TKO or KO. If Bisping can defend well, I think he has the advantage as the fight enters the latter stages.
Jon, Vera or Jardine? I'm thinking Vera is better adapt to the weight cut this go round and will catch Jardine in a sub/late 2nd.
Vera. Predictions made earlier in the chat.
If Bisbing wins- Does that earn him a title shot? Or does he need a couple more fights at 185lbs to prove his worthyness?
I think a win gets him a spot on Season 9 of The Ultimate Fighter, and a win against the other coach on the show would get him a title shot. Don't think he'll get Silva next.
Jon, I was kind of disappointed in Mir and his team's demeanor with Big Nog. His team basically showed Noguiera zero respect and Frank didn't seem to think it was a big deal. Frank is one of my favorite fighters, and I lost a little bit of respect with how he acted regarding the pranks. I am in total agreeance with Nogueira. What do you think about that situation?
I'm glad someone asked. Frank Mir is a great guy from my dealings with him. I was mildly surprised that he didn't try to manage the situation with Nogueira, instead choosing to sort of blow off Big Nog. Also not sure why Mir would want to incite the guy he is gonna fight. I, like you, agree with Nogueira. These pranks are taking over the show. It's really stupid.
hey jon, sorry i missed you the last few weeks. i wanted to know what you thought about how the FSBC is handling the "informal" investigation of the Slice-Petruzelli fight. also, how much of a chance do you think there could be of making a mega-fight between Kimbo and Bob Sapp?
ESPN.com's Franklin McNeil was an attack dog on this story. Props to McNeil. But...I don't think anything will come out of the investigation. Certainly weren't any tape recorders in the room, and EliteXC seems to have everyone on the same page...now. Have no idea on the feasibility of Kimbo v. Bob Sapp. I think Slice needs to rematch Petruzelli, or fight a legit EliteXC heavyweight. Otherwise, he's a sideshow.
I have read numerous reports on Shamrock vs. Shamrock. What do you think of this potential matchup? I think Frank wins easily.
Frank will be a huge favorite, and I think he wins easily. I think Frank has a whole lot left, actually. He lost to Cung Le, in large part, because he kept the fight standing up. Shamrock fought Le's fight, and should've just tried to beat the guy. But he wanted to appease the San Jose crowd. Mission accomplished there.
Jon, any word as to what fight headlines the Fights for the Troops event now that Kos has moved into the Alves fight.
Koscheck is still scheduled to face Yoshiyuki Yoshida in the main event. But I expect that to change after next weekend, depending on length/outcome of the Koscheck/Alves fight.
Did anyone else notice how Eliot Marshall said he had no friends in high school because he was a geek? Judging by how he acted towards Nogueira, I'd say it's because he's a smart-mouthed punk. Totally disappointed in those guys showing Nogueira zero respect. It actually disgusted me.
This season has been marred by disrespect, Joe. And by keeping all of the fighters who lose in the house, you create a situation where guys have nothing to do but wreak havoc. The show will get better, b/c the coaches are both into it, and there are a lot of good fighters.
hey jon heard of any boxing fights in particular the cotto vs margarito fight taking place on the affliction january show?
At last report, there will not be any boxing on the first Affliction show. Two sides couldn't agree on a boxing main event. And I think most MMA fans are celebrating.
Hey Jon, if Kos takes out Alves, is he next in line for a title shot?
He should be. But what should happen doesn't always.
With the news that Strikeforce is about to sign a deal for live tv broadcast on NBC and EliteXC already on CBS: Do you think Dana and the UFC will have to cave somewhat and get their product on "regular" TV.
I don't think a network TV deal is as necessary for the UFC as it is for the others, who need mass exposure. But I hope it happens. Could you imagine if UFC and ABC/ESPN partnered up? Wow.
seems to me that the winner of Koschek Alves should be fighting Sanchez next. Especially if Kos wins. Kos and Sanchez need a rematch.
That's quite possible, and makes a lot of sense. Not exactly sure what Diego's timetable is for a return right now. Rib injuries can linger.
I have to disagree with you about St. Pierre/Silva vs St. Pierre-Penn. I love George, but what does he bring to the table that Nate Marquardt, Dan Henderson, or Rich Franklin didn't? Anderson is a league above George in terms of striking, and has the BJJ skills to not fear a takedown. Meanwhile, the first Penn-St. Pierre was highly contentious and one of the fights I would have loved to see go five rounds.
We'll agree to disagree. I'm still looking forward to Penn-GSP rematch, but it's not my 'dream' fight, like GSP-Silva would be.
Whats up Jon? Frank Shamrock recently said that the fight with him and Ken is a 'done deal.' I have zero interest in this fight, Frank should be taking on real challengers. Please tell me I'm not crazy.
I, too, would like to see Frank Shamrock face legitimate challengers. But a Shamrock-Shamrock clash represents a huge payday for both guys. Good fight? No. Marketable fight? Yup.
Jon, what are the chances that ESPN airs some MMA fights in the near future. Nothing big, but along the lines of what you guys have done for boxing with Friday Night Fights. Just an idea, keep up the great work!
Thanks, Paul. I have absolutely no idea on a timeframe. But I do believe - eventually - the fastest growing sport in the world will air on The Worldwide Leader in Sports. It only makes sense, right?
Sorry for going off on a tangent, but we as fans respect these fighters, and you would think that fighters themselves would respect other fighters, especially champions of the biggest MMA organization in the world. I personally felt terrible for Nogueira because you can see that the guy obviously cares about his fighters and wants to protect them. Hopefully Mir can turn it around this season or I'm going to be truly disappointed in him.
You have the final word, Joe. My lone defense of Mir is that it's really not his job to play Resident Advisor of the house. He is just trying to coach his guys to win, and may not want to get involved in the war of antics.
Jon - we have alot of smart guys in these chats - why not have a MMA Nation debate in one of these chats and serve as the moderator....LOL!!!! j/k
Yeah, the regulars are definitely dominating the chat room today.
do you here the band europe in the back round? SEAN SHERK VS TYSON GRIFFIN is right around the corner the bet gets placed next week........ ITS THE FINAL COUNTDOWN
This is my final week to stall, John. I'm sure you caught Sean Sherk's training video at MMA mania (I believe). Just ridiculous. I think I might die if I did 1/8 of that workout.
hey jon whats your thoughts on the matchup problems koscheck will give alves in their upcoming fight will kos keep it standing or will he shoot and go in for takedowns i think kos should use his wrestling as an advantage if they end up on their feet i give the edge to alves
That's a good assessment, Rumteen. Interesting to hear Alves say he thought Koscheck would be an easier opponent than Sanchez.
If, and a big IF, Brock wins the next two fights.. how big would a Brock - Fedor pay per view be?
I think it would be as big a PPV as Couture-Fedor. But given Emelianenko's revised deal with M-1 Global and Affliction, I'm not sure we are ever gonna get to see Fedor fight the top UFC guys.
What's your feeling on Swick's place at Welter? Two unimpressive wins over impressive competition. Makes no sense for him to take a step down in competition now, right?
Right. I'd just like to see him stay healthy, and fight a bit more.
Unless I can get on the "Fighting Fedor" reality show - - - ahhh someones thinking....
On a scale of 1 to 10, what's your level of interest in the upcoming UFC Video Game.
8. I was never any good at boxing video games. Decent at Madden, MLB, etc. So I will be brutal at UFC Undisputed, but can't wait to drop some elbows with Ken-Flo.
I already have Sherk winning 32-18 on my scorecard!
What is the one thing you wish the UFC would do to further their product? I want a weekly/biweekly show featuring 2-3 live fights with up-and-comers. Monthly PPVs are cool and all, but I want to the guys who are trying to get to the next level. They certainly have enough talent on the roster for such a show.
Sign a deal with ESPN!
Crying shame that Ricardo Arona is still a "free agent" or just bad luck - you would think a fighter with wins on Wand, Overheem, Sakuraba, and the recipient of the greatest slam in MMA history deserves a shot right?
...and Rob in Jersey will be throwing a party the day he signs with someone. The lay-off gets longer and longer though, man. Hasn't fought since the Sokoudjou loss in April of 2007 I think.
Everyone here seems like theyknow koscheck is going to beat alves.Alves should be getting his props after he beats koscheck...do you think a win for alves gets him a title shot soon?
As long as he makes weight with ease and wins with style points, he'll remain on track. But the Matt Hughes win was stained because of the weight issue.
jon keep up the great work mma nation thanks you and when will we see Jon Anik make his highly anticipated mma debut?
Thanks, man. After much thought, I have decided not to pursue an amateur MMA career. And I think the sport is better for it.
Whats up with all these fighters dropping out of their scheduled fights because of injuries? It seems like it is happening now more than usual? Whats the skinny?
No skinny, John. And I hope we're not comparing 44-year old Ken Shamrock's injury to the rib injury Diego Sanchez recently suffered. It's a tough sport. All it takes is one wayward movement to rip up a shoulder, or tear a hamstring. It's an unfortunate reality of the sport.
Actually met Chuck Liddell last weekend at a club in Vegas. Dude is surrounded by women in VIP and still takes a minute to come over and take a picture with me. Real cool guy.
Always like to hear it. Not surprised.
Jon Anik vs Rob in jersey at 3am at some bar - - book it!
I know it will never happen...but how much fun would a U.S. vs. Japan MMA battle be. You could take the best from each country in designated weightclasses, and the country with the most victories is declared the winner. I can dream right?
We answer a question about country vs. country on MMA Live this week. It's very intriguing, if unrealistic for myriad reasons.
i made my mma debut last sat.got slammed on my head for a k.o....good chioce jon my head still hurts
Hahaha. Awesome. Hope you even your record at 1-1 next time around.
Arona is still a free agent!! Is he demanding too munch money, or do company's think he's washed up. What's the problem there?
I wish I had an answer for you, Frank. I'll check with a few well-placed sources. Feel free to send the question to email@example.com to remind me.
Alright, folks. Time has expired. Be sure to check out Episode #23 of MMA Live, with Gina Carano live in-studio. Enjoy UFC 89 Saturday, and we'll do it again next week. -JA
