Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:00 PM)

Hi folks, how are we doing? Greetings from the Colts' press room...

Chase (Nashville)

PK, do you get the pregame jitters before these things start? It's cool...all great athletes, and journalists I assume, do. We could call them pre"chat" jitters...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:01 PM)

I did go for a little pre-chat stroll, to get some fresh air, gather my thoughts, go over my primary talking points, etc...

James (Mill Valley, California)

What Jaguar team do you expect to show up this Sunday against Cleveland?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:01 PM)

One that runs for about 200 yards....

Brent (Nashville, TN)

Conventional wisdom is that if the Titans beat the Colts Monday night, the AFC South divisional race is essentially over. Do you buy that?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

I buy that the Colts won't be able to win the division if they lose Monday night. I'd still think the Jags a possible challenger provided they beat the Brownies...

Jon (New York, New York)

Do you find it interesting that the top 3 defensive picks, Long, Dorsey and Ghoulston, seem to be making no impact at all? It would seem that D-line would be a position where teamwork and chemistry would not be as important as physical abilities.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

Ask Mario Williams. Seems to be getting harder for linemen to make the adjustment. They are getting to be more like receivers and less like RBs. With ends, teams should do what the Titans did with Kearse in 99. Line up wide, go get the QB. Simple. But Quentin Groves told me in camp it's nothing like that...

Colts Fan (NC)

The Colts acquire almost everyone through the draft, so what do you think is with the sudden onset of penalties against this team? Most of them have been in the Polian/Dungy camp for many years and the ones that haven't been were at least vetted by the front office. We need some help.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

Slipping in concentration and focus. And some happen when you are overmatched. Not a good sign...

Matt

So what's the latest on Sanders? There was some talk that he'd be back for this one since it's such a big game.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

Dungy said he does not expect Sanders, Hayden or Addai to play...

Kevin (Ithaca, NY)

If you were to predict the monday night game, who do you go with, titans or colts? Also, do you think the Jags are playoff bound?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

I think if the Jags do what they should the next three weeks and get to 6-3, they are very alive in the playoff picture. Hard to pick against the Titans right now. I think they will push Indy around...

JERRY(ORLANDO)

STEELERS OR GIANTS AND WHY?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

I'd lean Giants on pass rush vs. an O-line that's hard to be confident in...

Steven (Hampton, VA)

Mr. Paul, Do you see a high scoring game Monday night from the Colts, or do you see it being a close game, with the Titans winning at the end?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

I actually see it not being a close game with the Colts not scoring a lot of points...

Jon, Abingdon,va

Did you send Chris Johnson a set of Bongos?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

I did not. But I applaud the person who did. Clever stuff. Was it you?

JL (Hoboken, NJ)

What do you think is the best & worst case scenario for the Titans, record-wise?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

Worst case-- they lose 6, maybe 5, and get a wild card. Probably need to lose a star player for that to happen... Best case -- they lose two and are the No. 1 seed...

Jeff (NC)

Do you think Tony is second guessing his decision to coach another year and open Lucas Oil Stadium?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

Not at all. But I think if they do poorly he might feel some sense of obligation to return and finish on a better note...

Another Colts Fan

Hey Paul, since you're there would you please flag down Bill Polian and tell him to PLEASE address the defensive line issue as soon as possible? You might tell him there are in fact some bigger bodies that exist out there. Thanks!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

Talked to him earlier today. But not about that. You honestly think there are big bodies out there and available who could play better than what they have and he's just ignoring them?

buckhalter(philly)

Is Westbrook 100%

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

Sorry, can't help you on that one. Hit the NFC East mailbag or chat...

Jason Chicago

When will the Titans finally aquire a top flight WR Mason developed into one but those are rare. Wouldnt it be better to spend a high round pick on one with proven college production like L Fitzgerland or Roy E Williams rather then lowball with 3rd or 4th round bums like B Jones & L Hawkins

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

They won't do it. You have seen how they operate. Maybe they'll chase a quality FA. But Williams and Evans are off the radar now. You have to admit, the WRs aren't killing them. They are 6-0. Maybe if they feel they have no other holes to fill and Dinger loves a guy, we see a high pick...

JL (Hoboken, NJ)

Colt McCoy recently stated that he intends to stay for his senior year. Although he can still renege on this commitment, do you think recent Longhorn's struggles in the NFL (including his buddy VY) led him to or at least facilitated his decision

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

I think the fact that he's not goiong to be much of a pro is the biggest factor. You're not talking potential first rounder here...

Tim Jennings (Indianapolis)

This is the 5th time I've tried to type a comment for this chat. The first 4 times Ron Winters called penalties on me.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

This is so much more fun when the clever people show up...

Adam (Washington, DC)

Having seen both clubhouses this week in person, what's your take on how the players/coaches of the Titans and Colts feel about their chances going into the Monday night game? Are you able to draw any inferences on these issues from in-person observation?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

In any locker room of any well-run team you get the same feeling all the time: They expect to win, feel like they matchup well, expect to play well. I've seen and heard nothing this week to suggest anything else, sorry. Colts didn't do well answering for penalties is the only thing of note to me in this regard...

Rich Rodriguez (Ann Arbor)

My boy Slaton should run wild against the lowly Bungulls correct?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

Yup...

Bob - Billings MT

Bigger game against Indys weak D - Johnson or White?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

CJ...

Guy (Round Rock, TX)

Any way the Texans can play for a full 4 quarters on Sunday?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

Three or two-and-a-half should suffice, no?

Bob - Billings MT

Finnegan vs Wayne - Who wins and why?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

Fuller is going to get him too, Wayne goes to the slot now in three wide. I think the corners will do well. But he's going to have some catches...

Bob - Billings MT

Is Owen Daniels the most underrated TE in the league?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

Only thing missing is scoring, and he had two very easy TDs last week. He's my fantasy tight end and was a steal...

JL (Hoboken, NJ)

Agree with ESPN's current prediction of a G-Men - Steelers super bowl?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

I'm not saying the Titans are in the Super Bowl. But I like their Dline against Pitt's Oline very much...

Greg (Indy)

I think I might be the only person who thinks that the Colts Offense is better when Dominic Rhodes is in the backfield? Addai seems to pussyfoot around too much for me...just run the ball!! Your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

I like Rhodes. But I don't think that they are better without Addai...

JB (Jax, FL)

We know Mercedes is one of the best blocking TE's in the game- does it seem that his playmaking ability is catching up? Are Lewis and Garrard starting to find that special connection?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

They are due for that and it would certainly help round out the offense. And when Matt Jones is gone, they will really benefit if the TEs can contribute...

Vince Young (Austin, TX)

When I'm ready to come back, am I replaced until we lose? This doesn't bode well for my psyche.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

You're replaced longer than that. You think one loss if going to send calm and cool Jeff Fisher running to change QBs?

JL (Hoboken, NJ)

While the Titans are almost unanimously listed as the best team in the NFL by the media, most pundits see their ascent more as a sign of greater weakness in the NFL than as a sign of their talent. Can a team without a star QB or WR ever be fully embraced by the media (ps I'm not saying "we get no respect"!!)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

Weren't the Ravens embraced? The Bucs?

Dan (Nutley, NJ)

The Titans will probably get to Manning alot this Monday, right?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

Get to, as in disturb? Yes. Get to, as in record a lot of sacks? No.

Jason Chicago

Dont you think that is the bad part about it. Dont any of the Titans realize that not having a Top flight WR is whats holding this team back Dallas had Michael Irvin SF had Jerry Rice Indy had Wayne & Harrison NYG has P Burris. Fisher is a smart man I am sure he recognizes his 2003 team with a high flying offense and a good defense would have wiped the floor with his 1999 defense and strong run game team... Am I wrong?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

And the Ravens had Stokley and Ismail?

Matt

I totally understand where Greg was coming from there. When Edge was in his last year, Dom's role was very similar to what it's been this year (excluding Addai's injury). He'd just come in to spell Edge. It seems to me like once Joe is healthy they need to go back to what they were doing in '06, which was more balanced.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

I am with you there...

henry - Omaha

After not losing for years in October, you think the COlts are gonna drop two in a row?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

They hadn't lost in September in a long time either and were 1-3. I don't really buy the idea that because they are usually good in October it's unlikely they will lose this game against a tough team on the road...

JL (Hoboken, NJ)

They were embraced only once they won the Super Bowl...they were not Super Bowl favorites the years they won (Balt was a wild card, Tampa was supposed to lose to Philly in the NFC Champ)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

Some teams are embraced and then win, some teams win and then are embraced. Titans are not your traditional power house. With little star power, they aren't going to be embraced like one...

Guy (Round Rock, TX)

The Texans have never won 3 in a row. If they do win on Sunday and achieve this milestone does it tell us anything?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

Tells us they are good enough to beat bad teams and got a nice schedule run to make up for the brutal start...

Guy (Round Rock, TX)

Wednesdays are press days for the league, right? Do you travel to a different AFC South facility each week or just whatever org is more interesting (i.e. winning)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

Wednesdays are the first day geared towards the next game. And conference calls with opponents coach and a player are held. But Thursday and Friday are locker room and interview days too. This is my first midweek trip. They could become more frequent depending on what the story is. Yes, if the Titans keep winning, it won't be bad to happen to be around them geographically....

Maximus in Washington, DC

Okay. I just read the "Hot Read" stating that the Steelers and the Giants were going to face off in the Superbowl. I'm not saying the Steeler are no good, but as I Titans fan, I see this as a trend of disrespect for what we've done this season. I look at our schedule, and we will be favored in every game. Steve Young says we don't score enough points to make it through January. Jim Mora says we are not a Superbowl team. What gives?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

What gives is, Steve Young doesn't think the Titans score enough points (I tend to agree) and Jim Mora doesn't think they are a Super Bowl team. Why do you let what they think have such an impact on you? Please, please, please don't embrace the bogus disrespect thing...

Vince (Nashville)

The coaches have me working on a special package just for me in practice. Are we ever going to use it in a game, or is this a ploy to make defensive Coordinators waste their time in preparing for it?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

I'd vote for a ploy. But Fisher likes a trick play as much as anybody, and they haven't done any and the game's gong to be seen by all. I wouldn't be surprised if they do something. I would be a little surprised if it involves VY....

Jeff Saturday (Indy)

Am I retired after this season regardless of how the team does? Do I wait until the last second like Tarik did?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

I think you've shown yourself to be quite valuable. Colts moving forward without you would have a tough time. Will you take a two-year deal?

Joey (Rochester, New York)

Is this the game we see Chris Johnson play more WR or catch more passes in the slot than out of the backfield?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

We keep waiting for that. I don't know when we will see it. I don't know that they are doing much with him like that in practice. But I don't know that they aren't, either...

Brad (Nashville)

Would a baseball team succeed in Nashville, Pauly?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

Never. Not big enough...

SprungOnSports (Long Island)

Will we finally see a game this week where Jacksonville just completely shuts down an opponent like they did during games last year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

Jags defense is a middle of the pack crew, I think. Not enough rush. Should be better if Nelson is back. I wouldn't look for them to win many games by more than 10 or 13. This could be one of them though...

Guy (Round Rock, TX)

What kind of impact does Andre Davis being out have on Houston's special teams? Offense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

Hurts teams a good deal. Offense? He has seven catches...

Rick(Nashville)

Any chance the Titans are looking past the Colts to the Packers next week?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

I can't imagine how they wouldn't be...

Jon (Abingdon, VA)

You and Floyd Reese use the same barber?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

We might as well. That's a good look for him. Handsome man. Should shave the hair he has on his head real close...

Rob (Fort Myers)

Paul, what's your analysis of the Colts linebackers? It seems that, since Thornton left, they have been subpar. Perhaps the Colts could sign the official from the LSU-South Carolina game. He tackles with picture perfect form.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

And is in good position. Yeah, they aren't as good.; Hagler can help. He's going to be worked in some this week. He has some giant arms. They can upgrade the position for sure...

Paul (Augusta)

Anyone giving the Falcons a punchers chance this weekend in Philadelphia?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

I do...

Brian

When do you see the Titans getting handed their first loss?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

Packers game I think...

Ryan (Nashville)

Any predictions on what titans will look for in 2009 draft?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

DT. WR. QB?

Stephen (Franklin)

Who is a better flex play this weekend...Fred Taylor? LenDale White? Chase Stejskal? Cedric Benson?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

I wouldn't play Benson. White will score. Taylor will get yards.

Eric (Nashville)

Paul, love your work, especially on 104.5 the Zone. Great, great stuff. Steve Young said he doesn't like the Titans for the Super Bowl because can't score 30. Funny thing is, they've done it 3 times this season. Also, last I checked, the games in the playoffs are often low scoring. Do you really think that scoring in the cold weather months is going to be a more of an issue for the Titans than it is for passing teams? Also, which top AFC teams are "high scoring?" Pitt, maybe. Certainly not Jax or Buff, though. NE won't be, and SD may not even make the playoffs.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

Thanks... Good points all. But my sense is he means they can't just go get a TD when they need one, can't turn it on. You don't see them get the ball and say, they're driving to a TD here. They may be able to win Baltimore style, however. And they may not have to score a lot often. I do think in a playoff run odds are you hit one game where you're going to need 24 or 27 or 30...

Jay Cutler

Your really a Denver fan arent you Paul?

Roger Goodell (NYC)

Paul, three of our bigger name players have had infections. Is this chat sanitary?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

CDC was here right before we opened. We were cleared. But it's good that you are on your toes. We all must be vigilant...

Rick (Nashville)

do any of the Titans remaining AFC opponents have better than a 50/50 chance of beating them?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

They aren't going undefeated. I'd give edges to GB, PITT and INDY in the finale...

Rob (Fort Myers)

Dr. Paul...since you stayed at a holiday inn express last night, can you give us your assesment of the Tom Brady infection? Could this really end his career?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

Honestly, I've had a full day here at Colts Central and haven't read up on TB. I do think Winslow has every right to be upset about the way things unfolded for him based on his version of events...

Jon (Abingdon, VA)

Serious question now, We have Thorton, Harper, and Scott...Which Colt should we target in FA at the end of this season? Do you think they wish they had of payed them now?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

Funny you should mention it: http://myespn.go.com/blogs/afcsouth/0-5-144/Colts-expatriates-help-key-Titan-turnaround.html Saturday and Hayden are UFAs o be, Don't thikn the Titans need either...

Mad Mike (Houston)

Paul: I know that we have Gates, Gonzo, Clark and Heap in the AFC. Does that keep OD from consideration for the Pro Bowl. Thanks.....MM

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

He probably loses out on reputations for a while unless he really puts up giant numbers... In time, he'll be there...

SprungOnSports (Long Island)

What do you think the Colts' biggest problem has been so far this season, and how do you think they will deal with it against the Titans?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

O-line youth and inexperience. I don't know how they fix it against the Titans front....

MIKE ILL

WHY IS JENNINS STARTING FOR THE COLTS HE IS TO SMALL YOU AGREE

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

Who do you want ahead of him with Hayden hurt? His bad play in Green Bay, not his size, concerns me...

Jeff (NC)

Is Colts Central your version of Disney World? Would you ever want to be anywhere else?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

I really enjoy the putt-putt course... I jest... But Baltimore actually has a artificial putting green in front of their castle/ HQ... I'm at Titans Central tomorrow...

WESS OHIO

HAVE THE COLTS LOST THEIR FOCUS OR DO THEY WANT DUNGY OUT AS COACH.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Why would any one want Dungy out as coach? Who wouldn't want a calm, measured and reasonable boss?

SprungOnSports (Long Island)

Follow up: And their youth and inexperience is why you're probably picking the Titans in this game?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

I think Titans D-line smushes Colts O-line, making any offensive rhythm difficult. Colts probably hit a big play or two in there anyway...

Matt

Speaking of Jennings...I don't doubt for a second that he's not as good as he looked against the Ravens, but he couldn't possibly be as bad as he looked against the Pack...right?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:04 PM)

As is often the case, the truth is in the middle...

PAUL DALLAS

COLTS WILL TE SCREENS TO STOP THE TITANS PASS RUSH COLTS 27 TITANS 17 MARK IT DOWN

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:06 PM)

Titans can tackle a TE on a screen. If Colts are content with that and take 5-yard gains and long slow drives, they'll do OK...

Jeff

You've mentioned the O line as the steelers potential downfall...and I agree that it could be a problem. But have you noticed that they have the best defense in football? And that their D may actually cause problems for other teams??

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:08 PM)

Oh absolutely true. Steelers are tough. And if Big Ben completes passes with guys hanging off him, the O-line isn't such a big issue...

Aaron (Nashville)

Paul, Code Blue? Corny or awesome? Or both?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:09 PM)

Little of both. Hype is corny. Sales pitch is greedy. But it could look cool Monday night...

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:10 PM)

Ok, folks, Time for me to shift gears and do some writing. Same time, same place next week... Thanks very much for stopping by...
