Happy Halloween Sports Nation! Welcome to the Friday injury chat. The injuries definitely have some teams spooked. How about yours? And while we're at it, let's take a poll - what is the best candy to get in your Halloween trick or treat bag?
Happy Halloween Stephania! Earlier this week you said to start Brett Favre if he rested this week...did he? Thank you!
Happy Halloween back to you Matt: Apparently Favre did not rest. He's not on the injury report (not a big surprise) but that would indicate that he took all the practice reps. Some of his struggles, along with the unfavorable Bills matchup, would have me thinking that there are probably better fantasy QB options this week.
I've alway been partial to the peanutbutter cups myself, but I was wondering if Reggie Wayne was doing any better?
Jon: I am a huge fan of the peanut butter cups myself. I buy the candy so I have an excuse to have some left over. Wayne surprised even coach Dungy by not being a practice participant yesterday - which has me a little worried. That being said, I believe they are holding him back to help make sure he's ready to go. They have indicated all along that it doesn't seem like a seirous injury. I would call him quesitonable now, let's see what he does today.
People say trick or treat. Wonder if anyone ever got the trick instead of the treat. That would be a bummer. Is Addai going to get the bulk of reps?
Chris: I have often wondered the same thing. Luckily, I have only gotten treats. And Addai looks like he will play, perhaps start, but I think the Colts will limit his playing time. Maybe a 50-50 with Rhodes.
Got to go with classic Laffy Taffy. Whats up with my man Sammy Morris Stephania?
Flynn: Didn't they make a song about that? It's one of my best friend's kid's favorites. Morris is a Patriot so rule number one is limited information. But, it is apparent that this is a more than one week injury. Don't expect him.
BTW, I have decided that Bill Belichick might be one who gave out "tricks" instead of treats.
Gotta hate the dentist parents that hand out toothbrushes. What's the status of Portis' health
Dave: LOL. I HATED the toothbrush - got them when I went to the dentist. Don't need them from the guy up the street. Portis is banged up, sprained his ankle last week apparently, so they're resting him, but his injuries are considered minor at this point and he's gearing up for a big Monday night.
Wunderbarrrrrrrrr!!!! How's Devin Hester's quad this week??
Jordan: Hey - I'm in your town as we speak. Very nice, wish it wasn't raining. And what is a Wunderbar? Devin Hester is off the injury report - great news for the Bears. So he looks to be just fine.
Love the old Bottle Caps. What's the word on Steven Jackson and Sammy Morris?
Chris: I almost FORGOT about the bottlecaps. Love those. We talked about Morris. SJax shaping up to be another GTD. He is practicing on a limited basis (about 30-40% reps in practice). He says he's "practicing to play" meaning rest the quad, let it heal so he can go Sunday. Haslett calls him 50-50 gtd, and we saw what that meant last week. I'm a little nervous about this one, primarily b/c Jackson minimized it when it happened, but clearly it's more bothersome than he let on. If he goes, I do not think he's qoo%. He's one you really want to see if he foes full bore in Friday practice b/c it's a big clue.
Kit Kat Bars are by far the best, any word on Coles and Santana? Thanks!
Jeremy: Love the Kit-Kats. Funny - never buy them, but love to get them in the treat bag. And then freeze 'em! Coles has been practicing on a limited basis along with teammate Cotchery. Based on the fact that both were able to play last week, I expect to see them both out there again. But I don't like their matchup.
JOLLY RANCHERS, specifically sour apple. I know this isn't a current injury per se, but do you think that Ronnie Brown will become a stronger runner in the 2nd half as his knee gets stronger ? (that combined with a delicious schedule)
Andrew: Have to differ with you. Not a hard candy fan. Especially sour. But people love their Jolly Ranchers. I was bummed if they were in my trick or treat bag. I made trades - just like fantasy football. But don't trade Brown - I think he's in for a big second half. He should only get stronger. I've been impressed that he could put up the numbers that he has and run as strong and decisively as he has so soon after returning to play. And you're right - it gets better.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN I was wondering if your dressed up like a star this morning. My question is on Joey Galloway last week he seemed pretty good have you heard anything on his status is he 100% And by the way favorite candy is peanut butter cups. Thanks
Brian: That's a good one. Costume is TBD. Another vote for the peanut butter cups. Who first discovered the idea of PB and chocolate? Genius. Galloway is NOT on the practice (injury) report this week which is great news. It means he came out of the game well and has been able to practice all week. Looks like the team's decision to hold him bakc for so long really paid off.
Maybe I'm a loser, but I always loved getting regular raisins... this year, I bought 6 bags of Reese's just to make sure we have enough.... riiiight.... is Scheffler playing this week? I dont have the room for two TEs on my injury-plagued roster!
Joe: Nobody, and I mean Nobody, loves getting the little red raisin boxes. My mom gave me those in my lunch. I don't want them for Halloween. Good move by you to get Reese's. Scheffler is looking very questionable still. Remember way back when he got hurt I said the early rumor was that his injury was fairly serious (and he was on crutches for a while) but Shanahan seemed to legitimately think he'd be back for the MNF game. But he wasn't. And he still can't practice fully. May be gtd - but he's not 100%.
A buddy of mine dipped peanut butter cups in melted caramel during the superbowl last year. I never thought you could make PB cups better, but man that was good! Is Bulger a safer start than Favre this week?
Jordan: Outstanding. Must try. And I can't believe it, but I actually think Bulger, for fantasy points, is a better play.
Everyone loves Tootsie roll pops. Is Santana Moss a safe play for Monday or is the hamstring something that will limit him?
Brian: True. But I got those at the doctor's office. Disappointed if they were in the trick or treat bag. Moss is far from a safe play. The Redskins are saying all the right things and they expect him to play. But Moss had swelling in his hamstring (more serious), has not practiced and has a lengthy and fairly serious history of hamstring problems ('04, '06, '07). Want to see if he can do anything today. I know it's Monday so he gets an extra day, but he may be a gtd. If he goes, don't expect any kick returns, just deep ball opportunities - and he won't be able to fully explode I suspect.
Where's the LOVE for Butterfingers?? They are the best!! Do you see B. Lloyd playing this weekend Staphania? I'd love to plug him in as a match-up play...
Chris: Almost forgot about them. Weird love-hate for the Butterfinger. Tastes a bit like paper, yet good enough to keep eating.. And my dad loves them. Lloyd is back in practice which is a good sign, but he's still limited. The thing with these knee sprains is they're a little tricky, and as you push more, the deficit shows up more. I'm concerned that he's not really full strength. Probably gtd, iffy, and not at full strength. May be OK as flex if he goes.
Reese's Pieces! Am I the only one who thinks that they taste different depending on the color? No one believes me... Anyway, what is the deal with Hasselbeck? Is he going to play this season even?
Jon: Not even close to the real Reese's. And not close to M&M's. Some weird sort of cross. Hasselbeck has a serious back issue - and these do not get better quickly. All you regular chat attendees will knwo that I said a while back that I did not expect him to reutrn anytime soon as these often take weeks, sometimes months to resolve. His own brother said on our network that he's still so weak he hasn't been cleared to practice. So it's not looking good.
Mr. Goodbar is best thing in the bag. Always tell the kids they're bad and take them away. Thinking about using Torrain this week. Is he their most healthy option?
Mike: Made me LOL. Are you reaching in the kids' bags who come to the door and taking the good candy away telling them it's bad? That's actually kind of funny...in a curel sort of way. Way to get even with the kids who grab a handful of candy when they're supposed to take just one or two...Torain will likely play, but SHanahan doesn't want to abuse him out of the gate. This will be his first NFL game and a first game out of serious injury. So expect him to get worked in gradually, but if he responds, he could be amazing. I think Pittman will go despite the bruised ribs, he fully practiced Thursday.
There was a guy on our street that would give out cans of pepsi or mt. dew.....do you expect Reggie Bush to be gone for the full 4 weeks after surgery or is it a quick recovery type of thing?
Jon: He probably shook them up first too. I expect Bush to be out the full time - and maybe an extra week (until they play the MNF game). No rushing him - too important and he has the history of PCL sprain on the same knee.
No love for the roll! Status of FWP?
No - not really. Just aesthetically never found it very appealing. Willie Parker has been practicing all week - Steelers excited, but cautious, been here before. If all stays well, expect him to play, but Mewelde Moore is going to help him ease back onto the field.
Just for (candy)corn-iness you have to post this. What are the odds that TO hits PAYDAY, celebrates with (Almond) JOY, gets fined 100 GRAND, and becomes a big CRY BABY about it? He thinks hes such a SMARTIE, but more often than not he gets BUTTERFINGERS and drops the ball. Back to reality...is TO a good play even with Johnson running the ship
Yes - but you get an A+ for effort. So you get your post. ANd no, I think T.O. is a lousy play. There - I said it.
I give up. Its the heart of the fantasy season and you waste half your chat talking about candy. And I have a sweet tooth and love the candy, but come on "injury expert."
Boo. Ask a question then.
How's Big Ben's shoulder? I saw he was listed as day to day...
Jason: They gave him some time off this week to rest it. The fact that he's getting hit so much does not help the health of his shoulder, yet somehow they can't seem to protect him. He'll play. He's been great despite the ailing shoulder, but at some point if the protection doesn't improve, then it may catch up with him.
Gotta go with Rolo's! I've got Fargas at flex...you think DMac goes this week?
Rolos John! There's a blast from the past. I think Fargas is a good flex. DMC has two bad toes and has not practiced all week. He hasn't been ruled out, but it sure isn't looking good.
Double-Bubble, for the first 5 minutes. After that, it's kinda gross. How long should we expect McFadden out for? Thanks.
Jeff: OMG. You are so right. All the sugar wears off and then it's rubbery. McFadden will really be day-to-day and week-to-week. The condition will unfortunately probably be a factor throughout the season, but can go up and down. If he sits this week, it improves his chances of feeling better next week, and they're taking a look at his footwear and other things to try to figure out how to help him out, but sometimes there is no substitute for rest. I don't think you see the former DMC until he's got a good 2-3 weeks of no setbacks under his belt - which may be hard to do.
Mark from Chitown, "Boo" indeed. Lighten up! As for me, the new TAKE FIVE bars are the best candy bar of ALL TIME: chocolate, peanut butter, pretzel, caramel, nougat. UNREAL. How is Warrick Dunn doing? Gonna sit?
Jules: Have to admit - I have not tried them. Must do so. It looks like Dunn will sit. Gruden said he should not have played him last week, Dunn still in a good deal of pain and has not practiced this week. Gruden makes it sound like Dunn will be back...but maybe not this week. As always, need to see if he makes a big change in today's practice, but right now not looking so good.
HAHAHA! Boo. Classic! Again....no mention of the Sweettarts or Smarties packets? I saw that R. Moss didn't practice earlier this week, have you seen/heard any updates?
John: Funny - I didn't even catch the pun. Yes, very observant of you. Moss had something with his foot that kept him out Wednesday, but he fully practiced Thursday so this does not appear to be anything to worry about. And I do like the Smarties - might be the only really tart candy that I like. Maybe it's the texture...
Gold coins, got them every year and loved them. Bengals say there's a chance Palmer is back sometime this season. Do you think he'll play and if he does, will he be 100%?
Taylor: Goin' old school with the coins. Very hard to unwrap though with those little tiny ridges. But very, very good. Especially the dark ones. I don't think Palmer likely ocmes back. I understand that he's competitive and wants to try to come back, and there is a chacne he can. But if he tries throwing and feels anything, then he's done for the year - and the bigger question will be whether he opts to try and rest to see if it resolves, or if he needs surgery. I would be surprised if we see him this year.
I love the old school popcorn balls! Is fred taylor gonna play this week? I want to start MJD but only will if Freddy isnt
Noah: You guys get good homemade stuff in Vermont. i think you also said you got the maple candy (love that!!) - only in Vermont...Expect Taylor to play. He did not practice Weds but the team reported that was not injury related. SO he is healthy and will play.
Never a big fan of Almond Joy/Mounds, coconut... yuck! Whats the word on Winslow? Is he going to be ok down the stretch? Thanks!
Drake: Transylvania? Really? Or are you kidding with me? You have to like one or the other...I prefer Mounds. I think Winslow will be OK, there's been no indication otherwise. The amazing thing with WInslow is all that he's been through. He will no doubt be a hurtin' 40 year old with all the trauma his joints have endured. But for now, he's strong, tough, and it sounds as if we should expect him to have recovered from his most recent bout with illness.
BUZZER BEATER! Fun Size sucks...Will Tynes be back this week to kick for NYG?
Sarah: All of the pleasure though and none (well, almost none) of the guilt. I expect Tynes back.
Swedish Fish rock!! Any word on Norwood's noggin? Will he play?
Mike: Have to say - I may be on an island - but I;m not so much a fan...Norwood seems to be OK, expect him to play.
Love the gold coins too, but be careful with them this year. At least up here some were recalled because of the melamine scare in China. Boldin showing any problems after he great return last week?
John: Wow - you are at least the 3rd person to send the gold coin post. Was not aware - I have learned from the Sports Nation today. As for Boldin, he is doing well. Not a bad fantasy outing for a guy who took half the snaps. No word of any setbacks so expect him to go, and perhaps play more this week.
Guess you have no update on Portis then, thx :(
Jason -scroll to beginning of chat. I like Portis this week.
Got to say, that anything King Size was awesome in my neighborhood. We would hit the houses that gave out king size candy like 3 times. Do you think we will see a resurgence of Peyton Manning down the stretch. They are getting the run game back in Addai, and Peyton has to be getting healthier ?? Could he be the Peyton of Old ??
Kevin: I know -and yet they still gave us candy when we know they knew who we were coming back again... Yes, I think Manning improves for a laundry list of reasons, including getting back some key players from injury and getting eventually in sync with his team. I have never felt that he was "still injured" - really not an issue with the type of condition/surgery that he had. Probably more of a function of never getting practice in camp with his 1st team, and then that lineup rotating weekly because of injury. I think the second half is kind to Peyton.
Go Whatchamacallits. Reggie Brown?
Steven: Points just for putting that one out there. Brown has practiced all week and it looks as if the Eagles get him back this week. Before you get too excited though, I think he stays the No. 3 receiver with Curtis and Jackson ahead, and keeping in mind all the injuries he's had, he may only see limited opportunity.
Sorry gang: I hate to go. This has been a GREAT chat - LOVE the candy references, now I have to go out and get some...and figure out my Halloween outfit. Have a great Halloween - a great week 9 - and check those game day inactives. Will be important for Witten, SJax, S Moss. And come back at 3 pm and chat with Erik Kuselias to get your lineup questions answered.
