Hey everyone, with Mark working on the Phil Fulmer story, we've moved his chat back to 5 p.m. ET. Come back then to chat.
Sorry we had to push it back, folks. Needed to find a calculator to add up Florida's yardage from Saturday...Here we go.
I don't believe this has ever happened, but is there a chance that two teams from the same conference will play each other for the National Championship?
It's never happened, but there's no written rule that says it can't. I guess if Florida lost, Alabama lost, Penn State lost and USC lost, a combo of Texas/Texas Tech/Oklahoma/Oklahoma State could play for the national title...A little far fetched, but with the way things have happened the last couple of years, I guess nothing is for certain.
How is it that Texas Tech just beat Texas, and still people think we have something to prove and that UT has a better chance getting to the BCS Championship game?
I think Texas Tech has the clearest road to the BCS title game -- win out and you're in. That's easier said than done, but Tech's numbers will only get better as the competition gets stronger. Texas and Oklahoma and USC and Florida have to hope for things they can't control. Texas Tech controls its own fate. Penn State won't catch the Red Raiders if Tech wins out.
If the gators do win out, and beat alabama in the sec championship game can we jump an unbeaten team like penn state?
I think it will be difficult. Lost to a non-ranked team at home, and, even though this goes against everything I said the last few weeks, I don't think the SEC is all that this year. Florida and Alabama are very good and are good enough to win the national title. Georgia and LSU simply aren't that good. Georgia and LSU could beat a lot of teams, but they could also lose to a bunch of teams. Auburn and Tennessee are bad. The rest of the league is pretty mediocre. I'm not sure winning the SEC means as much as it did the last few seasons....There, fire away.
Hi Do you think Coach Robinson will be let go at the end of the year at Syracuse even if he wins another game or two? Thanks
I think it will be very difficult for Greg Robinson to keep his job. That being said, a heck of a win over Louisville. At least his kids haven't quit.
Will Byu bust the BCS if they win out and Utah beats Utah
I think TCU is the best team from a non-BCS conference right now. The Horned Frogs lost to Oklahoma, but I think the Sooners would beat Utah and Boise State, too. BYU would have to hope the three aforementioned teams lose. I'm not sure that will happen. I don't see Boise State losing.
Given that SC needs chaos to happen in order to get to the Title game, would ANY team ranked above SC beat them? I am recalling 2004 title game with OU (55-19).
Oregon State beat them. They're certainly not unbeatable. And who have they beaten in the last few weeks. I'm not giving them a lot of mileage for beating Washington and Washington State. USC is very good, but playing in the Pac-10 might really hurt them this year.
Mark, is there a precedent that a team which didn't win its conference title still went to the NC game? Oregon St. would win the Pac-10 title if it won out, right?
Yes, it's happened in the past. Nebraska got to the title game one year after losing in the Big 12 championship game (to Colorado?). Same thing happened with Oklahoma in 2003.
Mark, if OU beats Texas and OSU, will they stay ahead of Texas in the Harris and Coaches poll and move up enough in the computers to vault ahead of them in the BCS?
I think it will be difficult for Oklahoma to jump Texas if both teams win out. I think head-to-head will weight heavy on voters. Not sure about the computers, though.
Mark, is there a precedent being set? If you coach Tennessee and lose at south carolina, your job is the next thing lost?
Good point. Vols have to hit a home run and it's going to be a difficult job to fill. That's a tougher job than most people believe. You have to recruit nationally because there aren't a lot of great players in your home state, and you have to play Alabama, Georgia, Florida every season. Tough job.
What has to happen for OU to play for the BCS championship, other than win out?
Texas Tech lose. Texas lose (I'm assuming). Penn State or Alabama lose. That's just for starters...
Mark, who do you think would be the best fit for Tennessee? I think the coach also has to have the character to be able to handle such tremendous expectations.
My early list would include: TCU's Gary Patterson, Wake Forest's Jim Grobe, Texas D.C. Will Muschamp, Texas Tech's Mike Leach, Minnesota's Tim Brewster and Lane Kiffin.
Mark, what would be a better victory this year...TCU wins at Utah, or Boise State's win at Oregon?
Both pretty good wins. Oregon's quarterback was hurt, no? But still a good road win in a tough environment.
Come On! I don't care what league a team is in, how does USC hold their last 5 oppenants to 20 points with 3 shutouts and move down in the polls?
The teams they're beating has something to do with it. Oregon was a good win. Arizona was tight, but the Wildcats are better than last year. Again, Washington and Washington State, good wins and great defensive performances. But both of those teams are pretty bad.
If Penn State gets into the National Championship game how do you like their chances? I mean they play better defense than any of the big 12 schools and have enough speed at the key positions to score on offense against whoever they play against.
I think Penn State would be a formidable opponent against any opponent in the BCS title game. Good offense with good playmakers. Quarterback has played consistent. Defense has been pretty good -- even without Sean Lee. Penn State is a good team, no question. People can question the schedule, but I think Penn State could stay in a game with anybody right now.
BCS aside. With all the negative press JoePa and the team has received during the preseason. taking that along with the challanges of the regular season games -- you put them at #3 going into the next week. Is JoePa a lock for coach of the year?
I'd say he's definitely near the top of the list. But if Texas Tech somehow went unbeaten (or even lost once), I'd give it to Mike Leach. I've been to Lubbock, Texas, and I'm going again this weekend. Building a great program there is a heck of an achievement. There's nothing wrong with Lubbock, but it's a pretty remote place to recruit kids to.
Any chance the Bearcats knock off West Virginia this weekend and take over the top spot in the Big East?
Brian Kelly has done a remarkable job given all the injuries at quarterback. West Virginia is playing much better, though, especially since Pat White is healthy again....
Is Colt Mccoy still the Heisman front runner?
I'd say he's still in the top three, along with Graham Harrell and Tim Tebow. Michael Crabtree has to be among the top five, too. Why not make it four Big 12 players with Sam Bradford?
Is Eastern Washington the best team in the state of Washington? BTW having GameDay here was awesome, tell those guys come back anytime.
Might be, given the way Washington and Wazzou are playing right now. I'll be in Lubbock this weekend. Hope it's as lively as last week.
ND is comprised 100% of Charlie Weiss' recruits - no more blaiming everything on Ty Willingham - and they are still losing consistently. If he turns in another sub .500 season next year, will he be shown the door?
I think they're close to turning it around. Still playing an awful lot of young players. They're getting better. Tough loss to Pitt, though. Never seen so many field goals in overtime.
Can we make some noise for Tech's Defense, outside 1 90 yard play I think they played pretty lights out against what had been an ustoppable UT team.
Defense was the key for Tech. Leach told me in the spring he thought his defense would be much better and it has been. We'll see how it does the next two weeks against two more good offenses.
Do you think the outcome of the Alabama-Auburn game will determine Tuberville's fate?
It would be tough to get rid of him if he beat 'Bama for a seventh straight time. I think they're nuts if they get rid of him at all, but that's just my opinion. Hasn't he earned the right to have one sub-par season? The Tony Franklin deal was a fiasco, but give him a chance to fix it.
Do you think we can get a petition together to get the first quarter of the Nebraska-Oklahoma game stricken from the records?
How about the defensive stats from the last two years?
Was Saturday a breakout game for Malcolm Williams, the freshman wide receiver from Texas (250 yards!!!)
Texas definitely found itself a deep threat to go along with Cosby and Shipley. Great talent.
Do you think Tenn made a mistake by firing Fulmer?
I don't know. It had been 10 years without an SEC title. That's a long time. Talent level certainly doesn't seem to be what it once was. Seventeen years is a long time. I'm not sure you'll see that again in the SEC. Not enough patience anymore.
How come no one is talking about a potential Alabama vs Penn State championship? They have played some classic games in the past. Also, it would be the 30th anniversary of "the goal line stand" in the Sugar Bowl.
Would be great storylines, no question. Win your last three games and beat Florida in Atlanta and it might happen.
How bout them dawgs!! Who is the best team in the Peach State??
Maybe the guys that play on North Avenue. We'll find out in a few weeks. Georgia will be OK. Ran into two buzz saws and got drilled. Certainly thought they'd be more competitive against Florida, but the Gators are playing really, really well right now. Give UF credit.
Based on the predictions in your "On the Mark", I take it you think Texas Tech will beat OU in Norman?
Yes, not sure Sooners can slow down Tech enough without Reynolds playing on defense.
The perception being built is that Penn Stat will win out and claim a BCS Nat'l Championship berth. Are the odds that great that MSU cannot pull an upset in Happy Valley?
I think Penn State could not only have problems against the Spartans, but also at Iowa on Saturday.
Mark - what are you thoughts on Rich Rod? Is his unwillingness to adapt his offense to the players Michigan has and the horrible season it has produced going to be worth it down the road?
Michigan lost a boatload of NFL players after last season. He doesn't have the right personnel to run his offense. He'll be fine. Give the man a little bit of time.
If you had to choose between Pat White and Major Harris, who would it be?
do you see anything stopping the Gators from reaching the national title game other than two teams going undefeated?
A team named Alabama....Don't count out the Tide. Very good on both lines.
Mark, how come everyone is hyping up Florida over the other one loss teams? They have the worst loss of the top 10 teams, and their impressive wins over Georgia and LSU aren't looking all that impressive.
As I said earlier, I don't believe winning the SEC will carry as much weight this year as it did in the past. A one-loss Big 12 team would have a good shot at staying ahead of Florida, I'm guessing. Big 12 is deeper this year.
It pains me to say this but Florida right now is the best team in the Country HANDS DOWN.
Why no talk about bama? They are the best all around team playin right now and have demolished all but a few teams.
I've been talking about them. If they win out, they play for the national title. Great lines. Not sexy, but can be dominant on both sides because the lines are so good. The Tide is obviously well coached, too.
Let's say, hypothetically, that Pittsburgh finishes #2 in the Big East, and Notre Lame finishes 8-4 or 7-5 (including that loss to Pitt). Who goes to the Gator?
I've been told the Gator Bowl really wants Notre Dame if they finish 8-4.
Okla. state or Tech? If OSU wins out were do you see them?
I'll take Tech at home. Oklahoma State would probably end up in the Fiesta Bowl (or title game) if they beat Tech and Oklahoma. A few other teams would have to lose first, though, for the title game scenario to happen.
Mark, I have to say this: Shandon (Parkersburg, WV): If you had to choose between Pat White and Major Harris, who would it be? Mark Schlabach: (5:25 PM ET ) Tony Rice.... Is probably one of the best things you have posted. I'm sure not too many got it, but thank you for this laugh!!
Thanks...all three players were great. Just trying to keep a sense of humor.
Is it still a given a Big 12 team will be in the NCG?
Not if Texas Tech loses and Alabama and Penn State don't lose.
Pat White would have beat the ND team
The Irish were pretty darn good that year...
What is the chance of TCU jumping Boise state in the BCS polls if TCU beats up Utah and wins out and Bsu also wins out?
Haven't really looked at the numbers enough to make an educated guess. Might want to ask Brad Edwards during his chance. Again, TCU is playing really, really well right now.
So you think LSU has no shot of beating Alabama?
No, I think LSU might match up better against Alabama than Georgia or Florida because it's power against power. Georgia and Florida probably have more speed and smaller players.
Sorry, folks, have to run. Have a great week. Best of luck this weekend.
