Greetings, MMA Nation! Thanks for checking back in for another chat. Before we begin, a major announcement! MMA Live will be going on the road for UFC 91! It'll be billed as 'MMA Live at UFC 91'. We will be doing one show next week in Bristol, before departing for Las Vegas, where we will do 3 live shows. A live weigh-in show Friday, a preview show Saturday before the fight, and a post-fight show after UFC 91. We also hope to be bringing fighter interviews and other commentary to the other ESPN platforms (SportsCenter, First Take, ESPNEWS, etc). We are excited, and hope you are, too! Now, we chat. A whole bunch to discuss. Urijah Faber lost!
Just curious what your take on Pulver, Filho, and Faber all being upset last night.
Wow. What a night. No surprise that Jens Pulver lost to Garcia. Thought that was a pick-em fight. Not sure what to make of Paulo Filho. He didn't take the weigh-in or the fight seriously. I'm happy for Sonnen, but wish he had the belt. And Faber...I don't think it was a 'fluky' loss, but definitely a wake-up call for Urijah. He was a bit too flashy and aggressive, and left himself exposed. He'll be sure to learn from it.
Alright Anik, you told me "slow my roll" last week and I've been telling you for three weeks how overrated your boy Faber is. Well now that he got KOed while trying to showboat with a move that was above him, maybe he can go back to the X-Games, get high and play Halo II instead of moving up to the UFC and proving himself. He's a joke, so was Kampmann and soon you'll see Bisping is too. I just brought it....word.
I know MMA Nation will be mad. But, I have no choice but to give Ripken the floor at least for a minute. I'm not sure Faber is overrated. It may sound trite, but he got caught. He needs to focus on winning, and not putting on a show. His next fight will show you how good he is.
Is Chael Sonnen next to challenge Anderson Silva?
No. No disrespect to Sonnen, but Anderson Silva needs a mega-fight, or at the very least an opponent with significant name recognition.
Jon: Any boxers perceived as potential mma standouts the way Mirko CroCop was in K-1? You do a great job on the show
Thanks, Damjan. Very few. In my estimation, it is far easier to have an established ground game, and develop stand-up, as opposed to the other way around. For example, it would take Floyd Mayweather 3 years of non-stop jiu-jitsu and wrestling work to even be able to hang with average fighters...my opinion.
Lets be fair I play Halo 3 bra!
hey jon me being from sacramento and all the faber loss hit hard to see our boy go down especially with a loss such as a tko does that move urijah down to number two on the featherweight list and completely off the p4p list all in all an dissapointing night for all of us here in sac town thanks for your time jon and as always great job on mma live
Rumteen, I think you'd have to drop him from the pound-for-pound list. As for the best at 145, he's still right there.
Let's face it, Faber got caught being careless. That hardly constitutes him being overrated. But I agree Jon, it has to serve as a wakeup call. When they fight again, no way he loses!
And we also get back to this whole theme of style points. Should a fighter risk getting caught to be entertaining? Would you rather take the criticism that Anderson Silva received for winning without flair, or be Faber getting grilled for a TKO loss? We'd all rather be The Spider.
can we watch all the mma live at ufc 91 stuff on espn.com? do you think i could knock out urijah faber?
Yes, MMA Live at UFC 91 will be live on espn.com. And I don't believe you could KO Urijah. You could probably knock me out very easily, however.
Hey Jon, really disappointed with Filho last night. He didn't defend for over a year and when he does he can't make weight and looks out a someone in the stands for the whole fight. Does the UFC even want Filho now?
If I'm the UFC, I don't go near Filho. I appreciate his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but he seems so disenchanted right now. Very, very disappointing for a guy considered by some to be the second best middleweight out there.
Jon, who do you think is the top Hispanic fighter today in MMA?
Miguel Torres. Back in the cage December 3rd. Frank Mir thinks he's a Top 10 pound-for-pound guy, if I'm not mistaken.
Mr. Anik, I have to say that Filho laying on his back was a joke. THis reminded me of the "old" UFC when it got stale in the late 90's. Do you think that he will be secretly fined behind the scenes?
Not sure about a fine. But it was a pretty disgusting display. His failure to weigh-in was bad enough. And then, he didn't even fight. Wow.
I don't want to sound to harsh on Paulo, cuz it sounds like he may have some issues he's dealing with... but what in the world was THAT?!? Speaking to himself, looking off into random corners, constantly blowing nose, never really engaging? Frank Mir's comments were pretty much right... what was going on?
No idea, Finn. Nice to have you back in the chat.
I know Jake Roshalt has sick wrestling, but after watching last night, concluded he had little else (other than a chin). How far does he have to come to be a true contender?
Certainly an entertaining fight. But you're right, he's got plenty to work on. The good news is he's bright, and recognizes that. Seems like he loves to compete. And, he won.
Jon, people are saying Couture-Lesnar is the biggest fight in MMA history. WHat do you think are the top 2-3 most important fights that the sport has ever had. Stop avoiding this question.
It could be the biggest fight in 'UFC' history. Not sure it will be the biggest in MMA history. PPV-wise, it could be a monster. As for the most important fights the sport ever had, I'm the wrong guy to ask. But I would say Royce Gracie's performance at UFC 1 in 1993 rings true with a lot of people, and really brought the idea of Mixed Martial Arts to the forefront in the U.S. People also reference the first Stephan Bonnar-Forrest Griffin fight at the end of Season 1 of The Ultimate Fighter. That reality show made all of those guys stars, and a huge segment of the current MMA fanbase began following the sport daily after Season 1 of TUF.
Jon, was it me or did Paulo Filho look a lot like Oliver McCall's meltdown aganist Lennox Lewis? Good luck to Florian!!!!
There are parallels to be drawn. I hope that is your surname.
Can you give your assessment of where Little Evil is in his career at this point?
2 straight losses at 145. Granted, it was to stiff competition. He's still an exciting fighter, but he doesn't look like he has what it takes to beat the top guys anymore.
Hey Jon - love the show. The sport isn't as growing as well as I would have hoped. I don't think it gets to mainstream status anytime soon. Where do you see proffesional fighting in 10 years?
Thanks, Buzz. 'MMA Live at UFC 91' should be a good first step, in terms of mainstream coverage. As long as the UFC keeps rolling, there will be those that try to compete. And once the generation turns over again, you won't be able to ignore the sport's popularity. It really is still the fastest growing sport in the world. What is second?
If the election was an mma fight how did it end? What round, minute, and finish?
First round TKO via guillotine choke. Over before it started. And it was in Pennsylvania.
Jon, what do you think are the keys to Mir defeating Nog in Dec?
Cardio, plain and simple. He has said it himself. Nogueira doesn't tap.
Think now that Sherk beat Griffin, they'll make your boy Florian (assuming he gets past Joe Daddy) go through Sherk before he gets the title shot now?
Yes I do.
Jon what are you looking at?
Haha. Good for Mir to call out Filho. Just a strange charade last night.
Do you think antics like last night on TUF 8, peeing in the fruit tray give viewers who aren't familiar with MMA ammunition to bash MMA?
I was immersed in WEC 36 last nite, and have been swamped today. So, I have yet to see last nite's episode. The chat queue is once again full of inquiries. I really wish the antics would stop. I can only imagine what else I missed last nite.
Dana White sure seemed impressed with Phillipe. How far do you think this kid can really go, and do you believe Junie's advice really helped him, or was that just adding drama to the show?
I vow to be caught up on TUF by next week.
Jon, you didn't think I'd miss two weeks in a row did ya? And I had to come back to point out that on Oct. 9th I called Phillipe Nover the "mini Anderson Silva" that Dana White was referring too. In Ryan Bader's blog on MMAJunkie, he says that's who Dana was referring too. I'll take my Jon Anik autographed head shot now. :)
You were prophetic. Nice to have you back in the chat. Had only a few other regulars to keep me in line.
Jon, who is the most physically imposing person you have ever stood next to? My little brother met Big John Studd once before a Saturday Night's Main Event and he said he still feels like he could doody just thinking about it. I would think Lesnar is just like BJ Studd.
1. Tony Siragusa (not necessarily imposing, just enormous) 2. Brock Lesnar
Best Jitz in mma right now? I'll go with Maia.
He's on the short list. So is Rousimar Palhares, actually.
Are you just as disgusted as most of us other MMA fans on how Mir has acted on TUF? When the show started I thought I was going to love him but ever since then he's been nothing but disrespectful to Nog and his fighters! He's been as bad as Junie as far as being disrespectful to the Nog's team. The things he yells out during the fights are just ridiculous! Things like "this guy sucks, what are you doing?", "keep going, kill this bum,he doesn't even deserve to be in the same ring with you",etc, etc. He would also do things like laugh at the other teams fighter when he's getting dominated by one of Mir's guys. If you want to do that stuff in the locker room or even in the corner that's fine but don't scream it out during the fight! I hope Nog kills this bum!
Have to post this because, if I don't, the masses won't stop with the Mir questions. It sounds like it was a rough night for him on the show. My experience with Frank has been terrific, as stated previously. Sort of disappointing to hear some of this stuff.
I will add, though, that he is supremely competitive, and perhaps that is getting the better of him in certain situations. Certainly don't need to give Nog any extra motivation. But that damage appears to have been done.
Looking back at last nights event, I have to say, it sucks for Faber to lose, but he's been taking chances like that for a while now. The jumping knee when he's held in a single leg, the keeping his hands down at his side and jumping in with a straight right. I'd much rather watch that than watch Anderson Silva do his best Bruce Lee impression. What do you think?
I go back and forth on this, b/c of my boxing background. Holding in boxing is less acceptable to me than, say, boring MMA fighters. I enjoy watching Lyoto Machida. I enjoy the ground game, and I enjoy the strategy of MMA. You need to win first, entertain second. And I also thought the criticism of Anderson Silva was somewhat unjustified.
General TUF question --- do you think having a tighter team dynamic (i.e. Nog's team this year) has any effect on an individual fighter's performance (assuming both teams are training adequately)?
Good question, Matt. While MMA is an individual sport, I do think the atmosphere created by Team Nogueira can serve as a benefit. I like the camaraderie.
What are your thoughts on the most likely next WEC 145 title bout, MTB vs Garcia? Garcia is HUGE for featherweight and a brown belt to boot.
I think that fight makes a lot of sense. Although, Faber is probably deserving of an immediate rematch, no? Happy for Mike Thomas Brown to have a belt. He may never win one again or defend it. But you can never take that away from a man. And Sonnen should have one, too.
Disagree with the Mir hate. Nog has been a great coach; creating team unity, respect and loyalty amongst themselves. Mir just has a different perspective. He views the fighters as, just that, fighters. They are grown men, and Frank Mir is treating them as such. Their goal is to INDIVIDUALLY win the show and get in the UFC, not win some sort of team competition.
Thanks for providing some balance, Jon.
Lesnar seems to have a TON of confidence heading into his fight against Couture. Confidence is good and all, but do you think he might be over confident?
Perhaps. But I'm probably overconfident that he will win. Don't tell Randy. I've got to interview him next week.
Hey Jon, after Chris Leben was suspended for PEDs, he made the statement that he took it after his last fight and thought it would be out of his system in time (paraphrase). What type of a message does this send? Am I the only one put off by this?
No, I was put off as well. It's one thing to say you used steroids, and made a mistake. It's an entirely different thing to say, 'I thought it'd be out of my system.' In other words, as long as you cycle correctly, you can use PEDs, and get away with it. Terrible quote to have had come out.
Jon, I appreciate Lyoto Machida's fighting style as well, and I think the criticism of Anderson Silva comes from the fact that he doesn't usually fight like that. Machida is known for being "elusive," while Silva was built up as a KO artist. Still, I think there is something to be said about entertaining at all costs because that's what's going to get you the money and fame, win or lose. Agree?
Yes, Joe. And it may be a close second right behind trying to win the fight. But I had Silva active for about 3:30 of the 10 minutes, and landing when active. I expected him to finish it in the 3rd or 4th round. Stephan Bonnar defended Silva's actions from the minute he arrived in Bristol to the minute he left.
Was Fabers attitude after the fight not the best you have ever seen after a crushing defeat. I think i was more mad than he was.
He seemed a bit comfortable accepting defeat. But it is MMA. Losing is an eventuality for everyone.
Hey Jon, did you vote for McKane or Obama in your country's election? I would vote for Lesnar over Couture too.
Obama. I just think Lesnar has most of the advantages in the fight. Stronger, quicker, younger, bigger. Only edge for Randy is savvy and experience, and I'm not sure that is enough.
sorry I'm late...I've ready a lot of comparisons between Urjiah losing last night to GSP/Serra I. Do you agree with those assessments? I think they may discredit Mike Brown a bit too much.
Hey, Chuck. Anytime a heavily-favored champ loses, the GSP-Serra fight is likely to be brought up. I think it's an okay comparison. But would agree with you that Mike Brown deserves more credit. There are a ton of great fighters that oftentimes don't ever get the spotlight. He got it, and took advantage.
hey Jon, whats your opinion on gomi. I think he just hasnt preformed well recently and with this loss he has to fall out of the top ten. honestly it looks like his heart isnt in mma anymore.
I definitely take him out of the Top 10 at 155, and agree with your sentiments. He's been flat in all of his Sengoku performances. Not sure what it'll take to return the spark.
Jon, if you're a KO artist and suddenly fight like you'd rather win first and entertain second, there's a spot for you in that line right behind Tim Sylvia. How'd that work out for him? (well besides that $800k payday he got from Affliction) :)
Haha. I'll give you the last word.
That being said, you still favor Urijah in the rematch right?
Machida is NOT 'elusive'. He runs away and will *ONLY* counter. I don't understand how he wins decisions because he has zero aggression, and zero octagon control - that's half the fight! Either revise the points system, or force him to come forward like the PRIDE refs would do.
You are not alone in that opinion, Damjan. The UFC has yet to give him a title shot, and his style could be a factor in that decision. I like him, though.
How much of a bid are you putting in on Smoking Joe's EXC contract later this month?
Finally our first Smokin' Joe Villasenor reference. I hadn't thought about making a bid, until now. May have to cut the chat short and go sell my last savings bond.
Jon, I was watching an old fight on Spike with Chieck Kongo and I wanted to know why he isn't as good as he looks? You know what i mean? He looks like he could kick the filling out of a donut but he comes out kind of soft?
I agree that he looks the part...looks like he should be an absolute beast. Hard to glean much from his fight at UFC 87, given the opposition.
47 mins til the first Joey Villasenor reference today... impressive
That's 2. Dudes in Chicago want to armbar me right now.
I dont' understand how Filho can not make weight and it actually helps him. How can MMA/Boxing correct the problem of a fighter who dosn't make weight for his title defense thus turning into a non-title fight, get beat and not lose it?
The proximity of the fight and the weigh-in (most often 24 hours apart) is a difficult variable. Oftentimes, the fight simply must go on. I would've liked to see Filho stripped of the title for being so heavy.
How long do you think WEC is going to last now that we saw Elite XC fold?
WEC is owned by Zuffa, LLC, which owns the UFC. It isn't going anywhere.
Have to say that Garcia looked devastating last night. I don't know if Faber deserves an immediate rematch however Jon. I think Gracia/Brown is up next with Faber having to redeem himself against a fringe contender. Also, you think Faber could cut to 135 if he wanted to, I've met him and he isn't that big of a guy.
You could be right, Kevin. I guess I just see Faber as the face of WEC. The promotion, and Versus, for that matter, has a lot behind him. And he has a huge fan base. Also, I do think he could cut to 135.
Jon, is something like a triangle choke a legit move to use in a bar fight? I am stocky, but only like 5-5 and since I run my mouth a lot after a few zima's, I was looking if I could adapt any of your strategies.
There are much better bar moves than a triangle choke. Not sure wearing jeans helps much with that endeavor. Didn't know they still produced Zima. I drink wine coolers, exclusively.
with Gomi out maybe now Kenflo can crack into Jeff Sherwood's elusive lightweight top ten list.
I can not believe that CB Dollaway is getting a shot on the Main Card at UFC 92 over Okami who was/is in line for a shot at the MW title. People complain that Okami is not a known commodity and doesn't draw - burying him on an undercard doesn't help! Does this mean that Okami's shot at Silva has come and gone a la Karo Parysian?
5-6 questions like this in the chat today. Sorry I didn't get to it earlier. It is a bit odd. As for Okami's possible title shot, it may have come and gone. But you just never know. Anderson Silva wants to fight every couple months, so you need opponents.
Predict Spider's next 3 fights...
So hard to do because of Season 9 of The Ultimate Fighter, and just the fighters' calendars. I'd say he'll take on a top light heavyweight next (you can fill in the blank), and Dan Henderson will also be one of his next 3 opponents. How about you predict?
Hey Cowboy Ron, An arm triangle might be better than a traditional triangle although being 5-5 is going to make that hard too.
Noticed Ken-Flo still isn't a top 10 lightweight. Name me 10 guys better at 155? (or 5 for that matter)
It depends on whose list you are talking about. WAMMA has him at #7 and climbing. Others have him in the Top 5. You should see where he is on my list.
Where is the newest episode of MMA LIVE?! I need my fix! Also, with Filho losing and recent wins over Henderson and Franklin...is there really a legitament challenger to Anderson's claim as the #1 MW in the world now? Is his next move to 205?
Update: Technical difficulties today on MMA Live. They are efforting to get it up as we speak. Should be within the hour. My apologies. As for Silva, he's got to move to 205. Has to. There's just nobody high-profile enough to fight. Dan Henderson would be my choice for a rematch, but he's fighting Franklin.
Kenny is only that high on your list because you don't want him to triangle choke you!
Savings Bond? I didn't realize you were over the age of 70. I work for an Investment Management company let me know if you need some advise.
Dude, it's from my Bar Mitzvah. I need all the financial help I can get.
Jon, great shoow and great chat. Quick hypothetical for ya. Lets say Couture beats Lesnar, and then manages to get past the Nogueira-Mir winner as well. Do you think this would force Dana White's had a little in trying to get Fedor to come to the UFC for at least the one huge showdown? I know he doesn't have to worry about competition from other organizations, but I also know he doesn't want a repeat of his and Randy's first tiff that resulted in Couture being out of the sport for over a year.
Yes, I think that scenario would put some pressure on Dana. But Dana White seems immune to external pressures. And, those are a lot of 'ifs' for Randy. Thanks for supporting MMA Live, and the chat.
So if Anderson is going to fight every few months, then when do you see him stepping back into the octagon? same ppv as GSP/BJ or later? maybe more counter-programming for Affliction?
Yeah, he could just be your consummate counter-programming guy. Whenever Affliction stages a show, counter with the best P4P fighter in the world. I'd love to see his scheduled get aligned with GSP's, so the two of them could fight. St. Pierre still has to get through BJ Penn, though, as most of you know.
I want to see a Silva/Henderson rematch, then I'd like to see Anderson take Griffin out (perfect fight for Silva since Forrest just comes barreling in), but I think Bisping will probably end up with a shot sooner than later.
Agree with all of that basically. Forrest Griffin vs. Anderson Silva would be ridiculous.
I know the gambling lines don't reflect it, but do you think that Lesnar defeating Couture is a monumental upset? I won't be shocked, but watching a 2-1 fighter beat a legend like Randy would be an upset in my eyes.
A lot of it has to do with the stages the fighters are at in their careers. Stylistically, Bernard Hopkins knew he would school Kelly Pavlik. But the oddsmakers saw a 43-year old, coming off a loss, against an unbeaten 26-year old. I think Lesnar will close about a -130 favorite to beat Couture. It would be an historic victory. But, despite Lesnar's lack of experience, I wouldn't call it an upset. I don't begrudge you for doing so.
Why did Lesnar freak that way when the topic of steroids was brought up in that interview? Sure he has never tested positive, but that is just something an athlete has to deal with, like it or not.
He probably regrets it. But it was an organic reaction. And because of his size, he gets that question far more than others.
How do you think Arlovski will do vs. Fedor?
I think he will hold his own. I just want it to last more than a round. All I ask.
Each week you talk about GSP vs. Silva. I just dont see how GSP wins? I feel Silva has all the advantages. What am I missing?
You may be right. But GSP, to me, is on a steady incline, and always getting better. I'm just intrigued to see it, b/c it is realistic, and I have them #1 and #2 on my pound-for-pound list. Fedor #3, etc.
Hey Jon, who do you think should be Chael's next opponent?
It'll come in the UFC, most likely. So any of their Top 10 middleweights. Perhaps Joey Villasenor. Oh wait, the UFC hasn't signed him yet.
YOU SCOFFED AT ME WHEN I TOLD YOU BROWN WAS GOING TO WIN!! I LAUGH AT YOU MR ANIK!!
I've been wrong before, and I'll be wrong again. Nice prediction. Lucky, but nice.
Who is Bisping? The guy who barely beat (maybe didn't beat) Matt Hamill who got dominated by Rich Franklin. Or is he the guy who barely lost (maybe didn't lose) to Rashad Evans who is now fighting for LHW title?
MMA Nation is bringing it today.
Should Lesnar defeat Couture...do we start hearing Lesnar VS Fedor talk? And hypothetically speaking, should Lesnar dominate Couture and end the fight in the first round...what do you think his chances are against Fedor?
We've actually already asked a question similar to that on MMA Live. I want to see this heavyweight 4-man tourney in the UFC play out. Then, we can start making dream match-ups with Fedor Emelianenko.
Alright, fellas (no female submissions today, unfortunately). That will do it. MMA Live should be up shortly. And remember next week: 'MMA Live at UFC 91'! Live pre and post-fight shows, as well as a live weigh-in broadcast from inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena. We are all fired up! Also, not sure of our Las Vegas obligations next Thursday, so the chat time and day may change. Will try to get an announcement up on espn.com's MMA page. Thanks for chatting. Until next time...-JA
