Good afternoon basketball fans! Welcome to our first recruiting chat which we'll have every Wednesday at 2:30pm. As we get closer to the early national signing period high school recruiting is on everyone's mind.
Let's get started!
Where do think Dominick Cheek ends up? Hopefully Nova!? With his commitment, where does Villanova end up in the team rankings? This class will be able to compete with Carolina.
Cheek's recruiting is starting to take shape. He has officially visited Kansas and 'Nova and those two schools are at the top of his list now, with Memphis, Pitt and Rutgers on the outside looking in. If Cheek ends up at Villanova there is a great chance they'll have a Top 5 class. Even without him they have a great group.
What pro do you compare John Henson to?
Chris Bosh. Long, lean scoring machine.
If KU does not land Henry, what are the chances they get either Cheek, Snaer or Wall? Any chances they can land two out of the four?
They won't get both Cheek and Henry because they play the same position. They're trying with John Wall but Elijah Johnson's commitment may discourage Wall. Self does such great recruiting that they should get one of those four. Not sure about two, though.
Paul, What's the latest in the John Wall saga?
Wall is currently looking at Baylor, Memphis, Oregon and possibly Kansas. He's not sure when he'll sign and could wait until the spring. He plans on visiting all those schools. Duke and USC are trying to get in the picture so stay tuned!
Is Duke ever going to gain a commitment from a top-flight low post presence again?
It's not as if they haven't tried. When you talk about a top flight post presence you talk about a one-and-done kid who is extremely hard to land and sometimes you're better off getting a top flight 4 man than a post. You can win titles without one, as Coach K's proven in the past.
What team do you see on the rise in the Atlantic 10?
How are you, Ovie? Two schools come to mind on the rise in the A-10. One would be Charlotte and the other St. Louis. Both have an influx of new talent. Charlotte has Lamont Mack and a few transfers coming to help next year. The Billikens have Kevin Lisch and Tommy Liddell leading the way.
How do you think Bob Huggins is doing at WVU? According to John Belein, you couldn't attract talent to Morgantown.
Obviously Morgantown is difficult to get to but it has alot to offer. There's an opportunity to play in the what is arguably the best conference in the country and for a legendary coach. Huggins' has been able to attract top talent, including Devin Ebanks who has serious pro potential.
Where do you see Favors leaning to? I know he's down to Georgia, Georgia Tech and NC State. Hopefully he'll end up in the ACC.
I think it's going to be hard to get him out of the state of Georgia. Whoever gets him will be getting a powerful low-post presence and terrific rebounder and a great kid.
How do Mason Plumlee and Ryan Kelly make sense for Duke. Don't they play the same postion?
These two kids can absolutely play together in the 4 (Kelly) and 5 (Plumlee) spots. Ryan is a legitimate threat out to the 3 point line and can take his man off the dribble. Mason is mobile and agile and you can run pick n pops with both of them to spread the floor. They both rebound and should be a potent combination for Coach K.
How good is the Gophers class for next year? With the two local studs White and Williams and Mbakwe transferring, is this one of the best classes in the country?
I love this class that Tubby and his staff have put together. With Royce White they're getting a physical small forward who's strong and athletic and can attack the rim off the dribble. He is also versatile enough to post up. In Rodney Williams they're getting another long athletic forward. He is a good shooter to three but needs to be more consistent. He drives to the hoop with ease. Those two will be impact players next season. With their strength and athletcism they will enhance the Gophers defense tremendously. Mbakwe is also a great pick up as he brings power, athleticism and shot blocking to the post. He will be very happy playing in the Big 10.
What schools do you see on the rise in recruiting and which have surprised/will surprise?
Schools you don't always hear about in recruiting and have done a great job recently are Texas A&M, New Orleans, Rice, Miami (Ohio), Miami (Fla.), Loyola-Marymount and Florida Atlantic. They've all recruited very well.
Will Kenny Boyton win a NCAA title at Florida?
They have an awfully good chance because of the class he comes in with (Erik Murphy and DeShawn Painter). When you look at how strong that class is and it comes on the heels of the '08 class (Vargas, Kadji, Shipman, Chaney and Walker) puts a tremendous foundation together for the Gators. I like their chance of getting there. They already have two McDonald's All-American's on the squad (Calathes and Lucas) leading the charge.
Seems like a big get to sign Gaddy for the UW ... how big do you think it is?
It's a huge get because they weren't supposed to get him. It all comes back to Lorenzo Romar's treatment of Gaddy when he originally committed to Arizona. Romar handled the initial decision with class and respect to the Gaddy family and when the guard de-committed it put the Huskies in a great position to land him and they did. Gaddy will make an immediate impact next season.
Keno Davis has quietly verballed 5 guys so far for 2009...do you see them having a legit shot at Chris Colvin from Chicago or someone like a Mclimans that chose Michigan over PC??
Keno Davis has really built on the momentum of just getting hired and on his previous season at Drake where he did an incredible job. I believe they will be able to into other areas and make serious in-roads in landing high caliber players, like Colvin.
Is Marcus Jordan anything more than a mid major level prospect?
I watched Marcus this summe in Orlando and he had a terrific showing. He has steadily improved. He can hit the outside shot. He can take it to the rim with absolutley no fear and he rebounds well for a guard. Saying all that, it's important he land at the right school which I feel would be in the mid-major plus level. While he could compete at a high major school, he'd be best served a notch below.
Thanks for all your great questions! Next week we look forward to more. Keep 'em coming. Same time, same place.
