Fantasy Sports w/Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all and welcome to another fantasy sports chat session. I am Eric. Obviously we'll be talking football today, but also baseball and basketball, so get those questions in and I'll try to answer... let's go!

Steve (NJ)

Please Rank the following Rb's the rest of the way. Forte, MJD, Slaton Thomas Jones.

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

I'd probably pick exactly the order you wrote them. Forte is safe and productive every week. Slaton is starting to scare me. His coach admitted Slaton is beat up and has hit the rookie wall. That should scare us. Jones has had his run against weak defenses, and that's over. So this is my order.

Blake (chi town)

Am i crazy for wanting Gore instead of Barber the rest of the way, especially for the playoffs?

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

Not at all. Look at Dallas' schedule in December, it's brutal. I think having Romo back this week will help, but I doubt the Cowboys will be scoring 30 points a week the final month. Gore is the focus on his team, he catches the ball, and he should have a big Week 11 to boot.

Adam

EK, I have Portis, Bush, Graham, White, and Mcfadden. I need to start 2 (maybe 3 if i put one at flex over Berrian). Am I in big trouble? Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

The big news today is that Portis certainly appears unlikely to suit up this weekend, and Ladell Betts is also hurting. The Redskins might actually have to rely on Shaun Alexander against Dallas! Can you believe it! As for this group of RBs, I think Bush will play, and I know LenDale White will. Graham is probably out. If Portis plays, use him, but it's not looking good.

Rob (Memphis)

What are your thoughts on starting WRs over RBs? I have T.O., S. Moss, Hines, and Colston. Should I actually bench one of these guys for Green-Ellis or Graham?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

It's wrong to blindly start RBs over WRs at flex, especially this season. I just want the best stats. I don't think Graham is a good choice this week at all, and he's hurt. I'd probably go BJGE over ... maybe Hines Ward, but that's it. Those other WRs are nice choices this week. Colston was our No. 1 in projections.

Mike (TX)

Thigpen or Pennington the rest of the way?

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

Yeah, NOW everyone is starting to see Tyler Thigpen is legit. What did it take, 3 good weeks? I have him in a bunch of leagues. Yeah, the Chiefs' schedule is so easy, but so is Miami's. I would take Thigpen over Chad, but both could be decent starters the rest of the way.

Nick (Michigan)

Does LT have a good week after "going off" on the lack of a run game?

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

I don't assume he does. These Chargers are different than last season, and so is LT. He's not 100 percent healthy. He should have a good game every once in a while, be a reasonably safe start, but he's not the No. 1 guy this season, and I don't see things changing. Philip Rivers is legit, and will remain a top-5 QB.

Aaron (Richmond)

Thinking about trading for a RB for playoffs. Thinking about Gore, Steven Jackson, or Slaton. Which would be the best option?

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

I'd take Gore. He's healthy, and he's not a rookie. The other guys are definitely question marks.

Wes (North CA)

Of course I am starting Boldin but I have to pick two of these three(cant believe I am asking this) TO, Winslow or T. Gonzalez?

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

Nothing wrong with asking. Plus, T.O. has had a down season. I'd still start him this week, probably over Winslow. Gonzalez gets plenty of catches consistently, and I think Owens will bounce back with Romo back.

Adam (WI)

What are your thoughts on LJ.. Do I start him over Addai this week? How about the rest of the season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

I think Larry Johnson will be motivated to play well, after not playing in more than a month, but I didn't rank him in my top 20 for RBs. I did place Addai in there. I just want to see what LJ does first, but I would definitely keep him around just in case he plays well.

Hugh Bob(TX)

If Portis doesnt play, do I pick up Alexander or start Hightower instsead?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

Take Hightower. I know there will be some people who expect the Shaun Alexander of 2005 to pop up, but let's be reasonable. Plus, he's not playing the Lions.

I am out here on an island with a baseball question

Who are you taking with the first pick? Who are your sleepers?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

Baseball! C'mon people, ask some questions! The Matt Holliday trade was a joke! Anyway, Pujols is my first pick. He's also my NL MVP pick. Sleepers? Haven't really gotten there yet, but when I saw Jayson Nix signed with the White Sox and he could start right away because Alexei Ramirez is moving to SS, I instantly became interested.

Jaime (LA)

Do you think Tatum Bell has enough value to be a RB2 for the rest of the season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

I couldn't possibly say this yet. I think what people are missing on the Broncos situation is this is not the same system or offensive line from the Terrell Davis years. New team. New philosophy. Jay Cutler is legit. T.Bell might start, might even start this weekend, but ... he's Tatum Bell. Why does everyone expect a Broncos running back to be great?

David (Chatham, NJ)

hey eric, today at lunch me and my friend were arguing about chris johnson and matt forte. he thinks that forte is not only better for fantasy, but is also a better real life rb. what are your thoughts on this ridiculous statement?

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

It's pretty close, so no matter who you pick it wouldn't be a ridiculous statement. Johnson is faster, ridiculously fast, and who knows, if there was no LenDale White maybe we'd see a 1,600-yard rusher. I like Forte. He catches the ball and makes things happen. I'd lean to him for now.

David (Slidell, LA)

Do you see Owens as a top 10 WR now that Romo is back? I'm trying to decide whether to trade Manning (Warner is my starter) for him.

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

I don't think we can say he's a safe top-10 WR. If I ranked Owens in my top 10, he was like 10. Not any higher. For the rest of the way, no, not with that December schedule.

Ron (Las Vegas)

Hi Eric. What are your thoughts on Thomas Jones playing on short rest after a large work load on Sunday? I see that you ranked him 11th, Why? Thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

Jones is playing well, and the Jets are looking to the run a lot more than the pass, so even in a short week, with a tougher than Rams matchup, I don't see why he can't get 75 yards and score.

Matt (ATL)

You?re showing no love for Mark Bradley in your rankings. Wouldn?t you start him over a disappointing Edwards this Sunday, given the matchup?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

I ranked Mark Bradley, which to me says I'm showing him love. I mean, there are no byes, so to make the top 50 WRs means you've gotta be pretty good, I'd say. I just don't want to overreact to what he's done. Thigpen's gonna be throwing, and I ranked him No. 9 again, but Dwayne Bowe is still there, and so is Tony G, so Bradley remains the fourth option on the team after those guys and LJ.

Adam Collins (Naples, FL)

Good afternoon always nice to read your advice. I have portis and if he doesn't play which seems likely who would you play out of kevin smith, justin fargas, or dominic rhodes?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

I have Fargas a bit better than Smith, so I would go that direction. With Rhodes I don't think we can assume he gets enough touches to matter. He might, especially if it's close in the fourth quarter, but we can't count on it.

matt (richmond)

I didn't see Bowe on the rankings? Also does Ray Rice have to wait for McGahee get injured see the carries he should be getting?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

Bowe is No. 13 at running back, so obviously all of us liked him in the rankings. As for Baltimore, it's pretty clear it's not a timeshare, and McGahee is the guy when healthy. He's healthy for this week.

Tom (Austin, TX)

Not a huge baseball fan but Alexei Ramirez is a G! How will you rank DeSean Jackson this week? You've been under selling him all year...he was heavily involved in the offense last week.

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

He was very involved because the Eagles have figured out how to get him involved. It's not like Andy Reid to do that. I still think Kevin Curtis will get more targets, and DeSean will show up in different ways. Even in a very nice matchup I didn't have an Eagles WR in the top 25.

Bob (CT)

Your thoughts on Tampa driving the Cadillac this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

I would ordinarily dismiss this as something that can't possibly matter to us, but Graham might not play this week, and Dunn is kinda old... so I wouldn't rule out him being relevant, but I am also in absolutely no hurry to pick up Cadillac Williams.

Smitty (NY)

Your thoughts on St. Louis driving Jackson this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

They will if he can get healthy. Very annoying situation, isn't it? And they are a bad team when they have no threat of a running game. Hopefully Steven Jackson can play this week.

Jason (Philly)

Who would you start...Braylon Edwards or Lance Moore at Flex? Also any word on SJax this week? Go Phills in '09!!!!

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

I ranked Braylon Edwards pretty well for this week, the best of the group, so I guess that means I like him. I do think he's a better pick than Moore. And for now I did not rank Jackson. Haven't heard great progress there.

Chris (SoCal)

Baseball question!?!? Who is your # 1 pitcher heading into next season? Is it Lincecum, Santana? Or does it depend on where Peavy and C.C. end up?

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

It's Lincecum. Check out those strikeouts. I probably won't get him considering I won't end up ranking a pitcher in the first round, but I'd take him. Santana will be next for me, even if Sabathia is a Dodger. I'm not saying I'd avoid Peavy if he's a Brave or Cub, but take out his Petco advantage... just sayin'...

Adam (MI)

Eric I respect your opinion the most... Should I start Lance Moore over Vincent Jackson in a .5ppr even if I'm starting Colston too?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

I would. I don't see why both Saints WRs can't have big games, especially when Brees throws 45 times per game.

Trader Joe(Chicago)

I got Rivers and P.Manning and planning on trading one of them along with a RB and a WR to obtain A. Boldin and R.Brown. I'm in a 17 week format so which QB is better to keep for rest of the season? Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

I'll tell you this, Peyton won't be taking Week 17 off. There will be no byes. I really think the Colts are going to score a lot of points the rest of the way and Peyton will end up a top-5 QB. I'd choose Peyton over Rivers the rest of the way.

Russ B (Madison, WI)

Brett Favre is just too much of a crapshoot for me. Should I deal him for a more consistent quarterback? Or is his upside worth is faults?

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

What upside? The guy hasn't topped 13 fantasy points since what, Week 4? He's got 8 interceptions and 4 touchdowns in 6 weeks. And he barely made our top 15 QBs for the week. I'd be careful here.

CJ (CNY)

Benjarvus in the early game or hold off to see what happens with FWP and Mewelde (I have both)?

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

I don't know what you're waiting for on Pittsburgh, I think we know Parker will get the start until he can't stay in the game. Green-Ellis might not be the best start, but at least we know he'll get carries.

Rebecca (St Louis)

I normally am in agreement with letting teams trade whoever they want, but I am wondering if I should call shenanigans on this trade between a husband and wife. Husband get DeAngelo and Wife gets Kaeding. Shenanigans or not?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

Shenanigans. Any trade with a kicker!

Korey (Baltimore, MD)

Please Eric I need your advice on this trade! Harrison and NYG Defense for Holt and Breaston. Who wins?? THanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

Yuck. Harrison? Take the Breaston side, easily.

Mike (DC)

Trade deadline help! Boldin/Lendale for Lee Evans/Westbrook. Which side wins?

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

Oooh, I like that. Very interesting. I think I lean to the Boldin/LenDale side, surprisingly. Westbrook against NFC East teams is so average, and he still has three games left with them.

Tim (Chicago)

Hey Eric. Thanks for your constant professionalism and sound advice. Send Turner and Berrian for Westbrook? Already clinched playoff spot and looking ahead to playoffs (Week 15 & 16)I have LT, Boldin, Avery, Welker, and Curtis where you start 2 RB, 3 WR. What about for SJAX?

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

I no longer assume Westbrook is better than Turner. The thing is, neither of them is doing much in tough matchups. Turner just feasts on bad defenses. Look at mid December, it seems Turner has the better schedule. Not sure I'd make that trade.

John (NJ)

What is crazier? You projecting Big Ben top 10, or TMR having Thigpen at 4....FOUR!!!!

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

Neither is at all crazy. I like Thigpen as well, and had him top 10. And what's wrong with Big Ben in the top 10 in that matchup? Chargers are last against the pass. Don't laugh, Thigpen has been legit. It's Billy Volek all over again!

Hank (TN)

Quick trade advice - Get McNabb for Slaton and Campbell...upgrade or no trade?

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

Not a big fan of any of them in December. Do better than McNabb for that duo. But yeah, he is an upgrade.

Luke (KS)

Eric, thanks for taking the questions today. Worried about Norwood stealing Turner's thunder. Should I trade Turner and Vincent Jackson for Lynch and Wayne? Lynch has been looking bad lately.

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

I wouldn't worry about Norwood stealing from Turner. I mean, his big play Sunday was taking a screen pass the distance. It's not like that play would have gone to Turner. People overrate this. Turner is very good half the time. I'd keep him around.

Dave (Lansing, MI)

Who do I start this week - Romo coming off that injury, Pennington against a dismal Oakland, or the struggling Delhomme against an atrocious Detroit team?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

Tough call. I went with Romo at No. 10, the best of this group. I just don't think he's in for a 3-touchdown game.

Jack(Chicago)

Turner's playoff schedule looks tough to me. Think it would be worth the risk to trade Turner for S.Jackson?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

I would if we knew for sure Jackson would play. No question. But what if this injury gets worse and the going-nowhere Rams let him sit December.

dre (nyc)

Hey EK, Berrian has a tough match up this week and put up a goose egg last time out...would I be better off going with L.Moore or Breaston?

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

Don't read into the goose egg, Means nothing. He had scored the four prior weeks. I'd still play Breaston. The Cardinals are like that Colts team with Stokley; three wide receivers are worth playing now.

Phil (Philly)

What are the chances you draft Carlos Ruiz way too early next year? 75%?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

No chance at all. Won't make my top-15 catchers ... and it's a bad position. But as a defender on the WORLD CHAMPS... sorry. He and Bob Boone joined together in fame!

Paul (Sydney, Austrailia)

Fantasy basketball question here!! Drop R.Rondo and sign R.Sessions? He's been incredible lately.

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

About time! Took 49 minutes for a hoops question. Maybe that's a sign. Anyway, no I would not do that. I know Sessions looks appealing, but Rondo is safer. Plus, the Bucks seem to want to use Ridnour over Sessions. Might just be a nice start.

Steve(Ma)

TRADE! Was offered Barber for Forte. I am 10-0 and just looking at weeks 15 and 16. 1/2 ppr and Barbers schedule tells me no. Your thoughts. I could trade C Johnson for Barber.

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

It's a great time for owners headed to the playoffs to look at the schedule. It's just a fact the Cowboys will have it tough. I think I'd prefer Forte. I mean, Barber could have good games against the NFC East teams, but is he gonna go nuts? Risky. And I would take Forte over Chris Johnson.

Mike (DC)

Hey Eric, I picked up the NYJ defense to cover TB being on a bye. They made it hard for me to drop them this week. Start TB over NYJ?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Drop them. Don't get too attached to players/defenses. Plus, the Jets don't get the easy Rams this week. That was embarrassing.

Sean (LA)

Wait! You take a Carlos Ruiz question, but a question of whether Howard or Lincecum should be a top keeper isn't worthy?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

There are THOUSANDS of questions in here... I'd take Lincecum...

Nick (LA)

Why don't you like Philly WR's against Cincy?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

I think like 5 of them will split the catches, but hey, two of them made my top 30. I wouldn't call that "not liking." Plus, this is the game Westbrook goes off.

John STL

Need to grab a waiver wire DST to take me home.... any suggestions? Saints?

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

I nearly had the Colts in my top 10 this week...It's Sage advice to expect Houston turnovers...

Chris (Saratoga Springs)

Hey Eric just watching you and Keith on the news!! I need a win bad 1 game out, I have Addai starting for sure am I risking too much if I start Rhodes in flex? I have Fargas and Mewelde, would like to start Moore but I figure Willie may want to prove a point. Your thoughts? and thanks!!

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

Wow, we chat and go on TV at the exact same time! We are versatile... Anyway, I wouldn't use Rhodes there, but it has nothing to do with Addai. It's about touches. If Parker does play, I think he'll get more carries than Mewelde. I'd use Fargas.

Milt, miami

Quick one Shaun Hill or Eli?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Wow! Can you imagine that question a few months ago? I have Eli a few spots better, but not a lot.

Marsh (StL)

Pick 1 from Coles and Norwood? I'm thinking of gambling on Norwood's really good matchup.

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Norwood's big play potential is growing on me, and I'm not expecting much from the Jets this week. So I can see that. And projecting Norwood nicely has little to do with Turner. It's not like both can't be good.

Scott (HI)

Eric, do you factor in weather when picking a QB or WR this time of year. In such case, would you play a top 10 QB in bad weather or a top 20? Mahalo!

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Barely. I'm still looking for numbers and not worried so much about weather in November. I'll still play a Peyton Manning in the snow.

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

OK, thanks so much for the great questions and have a great Week 11 in fantasy football....
