Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

Hawks, Lakers, Celtics all rolling. I'm sure that sentence has never been written before in a chat. Let's see what other ground we can break today. "Your face looks like Robin Williams' knuckles".

cam(mem,tn)

Are you people really not goin to give mayo his respect. The kid is out perfoming every rookie and shooting 45% from the feild with only 2.5 turnovers. Why the hate thorpe?!

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

He's 4th on my list. Yhe other guys have been terrific too. It's not like he's 14th or 24th.

Joe (Fugo, FL)

Anderson Varejao as sixth man of the year?

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

He's a legit candidate.

Phil (Atlanta, GA)

Who are you more attracted to physically Brad Miller or Chris Kaman?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

I like passers better. Miller gets the nod.

David, Brooklyn

In 10 yrs, who will be the most talked about player from the last 2 entry classes? My guess is either, Rose, Durant or Mayo.

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Rose or KD. Maybe Oden.

Chris (FL)

How impressive was Al Horford last night?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Wow. That game is going to be on my teaching reel for years.

Chris (Santa Barbara, CA)

Hey Coach, do you think some players are great finishers in the lane, or can it be taught? If it can be taught, how do you go about doing it? Thank you

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Both. Some guys just make shots. Others can be taught proper mechanics.

OJ MAYO(memphis)

Chad, it looks like you keep underestimating me. What do I have to do to convince you I'll be a superstar?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

I'll ask him when I see him again.

Seth Rogan

You know who is not helping us with the chicks, the shoebomber Richard Reed over here.

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

I liked the Taliban comment too.

Thilan (Philadelphia, PA)

Hey David. With this years draft class already showing even more promise than expected, what do you think about the influx of talent coming into the league? When was the last time there were this many really good players (young and old) in the league? 80s maybe?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Perhaps. It's an honor to cover this rookie class.

Todd (Lexington, Tn)

David please post this Mayo is not a superstar he is just the best player on a bad team.

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

They are not that bad. But he's shooting so well. I'm curious what he'll do when his shot goes south for a few games.

Dan (Buffalo, NY)

Thorpedo, early thoughts on the new-look Cavs? Mike Brown doesn't like having to count on LeBron getting 40+ a night but it seems to be coming in the flow of the offense. Thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

I think they can win the East. At least.

EJ

Do you expect Trevor Ariza to have a big role with the Lakers this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Yes. He's still so young-will get better.

Chebie, DC

Seen JaVale McGee play yet? Any thoughts on whether he should start over Etan "Faux Tough" Thomas?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Not yet. When he keeps it simple, he's very effective. Huge upside.

Tim (Cleveland)

You mention Lakers, Celtucs, and Hawks on a roll but no Cavs on a roll?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

More like a hoagie.

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Mmmm, hoagies.

Nasir, Philly

Huge Tyrus Fan here, but losing faith. What is wrong with TT? Why does he look so at lost? His offensive has looked worse this year. Have you talked to him?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Amazingly, he has too much rope there. Not ready to make plays out in space. He needs to hang around the hoop more. Watching Horford last night up close may work wonders for him.

William (PA)

The Sixers just need time to gel, right?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Same as last year.

Jon: (Camas, WA)

They are talking about bringing Oden off the bench tonight and for the forseeable future. Is this a good idea with his injury history? I am worried about him getting tight while sitting.

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

I don't think it matters. I can't wait to see him-he looked great the other day in Orlando.

Jeff (Chicago, IL)

David, how does Luc Mbah a Moute go from a player that you said the Bucks would add to the rotation only if they liked losing, to #8 in your most recent rookie rankings? From what I've been reading, people in Milwaukee are furious. Seems like you owe the Prince of Defense an apology.

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

I did not think he was ready, offensively, to help them win as a rookie. I still may be right. They are 3-5. But I don't ignore his production. People who expect rookies to lead their teams to wins don't know the league.

chris (chicago)

its clear that the bulls must do something with their roster, they need a center. tyrus thomas and kirk hinrich for kaman?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

I was thinking something similar. Depends what the Clips want to do with Thornton-3 or 4.

Tyler (St. Louis, Mo.)

Stein was cracking on you in his chat. Maybe you should put him in your boot camp.

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

He does not have a mean bone in his body. I'm sure he wasn't cracking on me. What, was he making fun of my lengthy answers?

jay(dallas)

What do you think about Gerald Green's play for the mavericks? I think he should start and they should bring howard off the bench as 6th man.

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

Either way, he deserves pt.

Phil (LA)

Dave, I know you probably won't answer this or say something like you enjoy the game and players to much to like a specific team. But who do you root for secretly when youre at home watching the games on your (I'm assuming) big screen TV?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

As a young man I was a Lakers fan to the extreme. Magic and Norm Nixon were my guys back in the day. Silk too. Since Magic retired, and before I started working with NBA guys, I lost interest in any one team.

Sam (La Jolla)

With Al Horford, how impressive was the sheer simplicity of his work? You seal your man, you get a good pass, and you dunk. Pretty simple stuff.

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Credit must go to Woodson and the guards. They really pound the paint, which is an emphasis thing.

Jeff (Chicago, IL)

I am fairly certain that the majority of Bucks fans don't expect Luc Mbah a Moute to be the sole or leading contributor in their chase for victories, rather, he is viewed as a selfless player that does the dirty work that most teams covet. Granted it's early, but, does Mbah a Moute remind you at all of Bruce Bowen? Another lunch pail SF who just does the little things to win.

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

No. Bowen would never have gotten off the bench if he wasn't also a 3 point threat.

Sam (La Jolla)

David, with the incredible play of the rookies, can David Stern make a legitimate claim that his 1-year of college rule is making these players more seasoned and ready for the NBA? Or is this just a really talented class?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Did you watch last year?

Jason (Bmore)

Rudy Fernandez has been impressive thus far. Is he more effective off the bench, or does he need starters time in place of Blake?

LT (Los Angeles)

what do you think about Andris Biedrins' expanded offensive game? Did you catch Nellie go "big" last night?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

I didn't see it. But I saw him the other day and was really impressed.

Jordan (Stoney Creek, Ontario Canada)

Thorpedo, whats your take on the Raps? Do they make a move for a wing player or stick it out with JK, AP & Jamario "the honey" Moon is over?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

They need a tough guy on the wing. Been saying that for a year.

Matt (College Station)

I think the Cavs are like Seth Rogen dancing. They use the dice move (Lebron) a lot, but really its all they have.

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Individually, perhaps. But they defend and board. Recipe for a championship.

Marc Stein (espn)

I answered a question with a one word answer and said it was my DT impression for the day.

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

I hear that a lot these days. I'm the same way in person. Rarely talking.

oli (Shank, NM)

Courtney Lee has a real shot at PT in Orlando, his D looks good but can he get more aggressive on the O? i think thats whats holding him back right now.

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

What's holding him back are two solid veterans. And he's struggled shooting in the few games he's played. But he's a keeper, and SVG knows this.

Allen Iverson (DEEE-troit)

can i finally get a ring, please?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

1-800-tiffany

Kelly (Boca Raton)

You are out of control! Your sarcastic answers are so funny...my students call me rude when I give answers like you do...

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Sorry. I am not a role model!!

Younger (Los Angeles, CA)

Better defensive team '05 Spurs or '07 Celtics? Also who would win in a championship series?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Celts I think.

Tom (OH)

Will you be the one ESPN personality who admits that Lebron is the MVP so far? I know its early, but it angers me to hear that Paul Pierce is #1. PP is shooting 38% from the field. Yea, that just screams MVP...

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

I couldn't believe the PP MVP comment either. But it's early. One thing, to me, is perfectly clear. LBJ is without a doubt the best player on earth.

Nick (oregon)

You posted this - Jason (Bmore): Rudy Fernandez has been impressive thus far. Is he more effective off the bench, or does he need starters time in place of Blake? But gave no response...

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

oops. It does not matter. He'll play the same either way.

anton (manila, philippines)

ey there! big kings fan here...what's going on with geoff petrie? since the time they failed to sign wells, all decisions he's made has been questionable so far (udrih's contract extension, the bibby trade where we got almost nothing, etc). is this not the guy who assembled the most competitive kings team from the early 2000's? maybe you can enlighten me...

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Udrih's deal was strange to me. But I like Salmons, and the trade, and the draft picks.

kobe bryant (LA)

what?!? Lebron the best player on the earth? really?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Really.

Matt (Houston)

David, have you ever watched Its always sunny in Philadelphia? At the risk of a ban, I will firmly say it will someday take over Seinfeld in comedy history. It has a long way to go though.

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Hysterically funny when I saw it.

CP3 (New Orleans)

Don't mind me, Thorpe. I'll just be putting up 22 and 12 for the rest of the season.

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

I love your game CP. Best pg in the league. But you are not 260+pounds, running and jumping over people and blowing by people off the dribble and making it rain from deep to win games and...you get the picture.

Rob (Denver, CO)

Whats going on with JR SMith? One week he's solid, the next week he looks completely lost!!

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Sorry, posted this question from 2 years ago.

Jeff (Chicago, IL)

If Lebron never wins a championship, is that the biggest dissapointment ever in basketball?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Gotta believe the Logo losing all those titles takes the cake.

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Mmmm...cake.

Pacman Jones (Dallas)

Did someone say Make it Rain?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Relax.

Dan (Buffalo, NY)

Thorpedo, CP3 v. Bron in the finals?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Could be. Both are legit.

David (miami)

It's funny you think LBJ is the best player on earth when Wade is easily on his level. In fact Wade has the better overall stats this year.

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

I have Wade #2 in my unofficial ranking.

Joe (NY)

Dave you are 6'1 210 lbs? how close am I?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Close. Trying out for a local carnival?

JB (TX)

I tried to explain to some other people that LeBron at 23 is leagues ahead of MJ at 23 and they looked at me like I had 3 arms. I'm right, right?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Yes.

Jack (Chicago)

Are the Bulls holding out to go after Wade next year?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

I doubt it.

Andy G: (Minneapolis, MN)

Will Mike Brown ever decide to run a real offense, or is LBJ always going to dribble around the top and challenge five defenders? And why is Memphis copying this offense with OJ Mayo?

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

I would like to see more fluidity there, but it's working for them.

Jeff (Denver)

What you listening to? And does Chris Anderson have more tatoos than K-Mart?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Monteverdi. Good stuff. Who does have the most tattoos?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Or is tattoos plural spelled "tattii".

chris (chicago)

david your not insisting you would rather have LBJ than MJ now are you!?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

No. But for the first time in 15 years I think there is a fair argument that LBJ could end up being better. Not saying it will happen. But he's special enough that it might.

Billy Bob (Hoboken)

LBJ will never be on MJ's level because he's a horrible Free Throw shooter and doesn't get others involved(Assists). Wade would be a closer comparison.

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

You are high, drunk, stoned, and stupid. oh, and banned.

Jeff (Philly)

Lebron will never be close to the defensive player that Jordan was...and in the end that will be why he will always fail in comparison. that and the fact that he cant hit big free throws to save his life.

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

You could be right. That is the biggest question. And remember, MJ had 3 years of defensive teaching and practice at Dean Smith U.

Jon (mad-town)

If D-rose has a couple more games like last night's will he be #1 in your rankings? Why didn't anyone expect this so soon? Does this mean he might be an even better talent then originally thought?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Nobody thought he'd get this much pt so early.

Rtymology

Only certain latinate words get the I to pluralize them, tattoo is from the polynesian word tatau and as such would not go to the I.

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

As I suspected.

Matt (Seattle)

David, help me out here as a fan. Obviously my NBA jones is sort of on hiatus, and I am having a hard time finding a team to call my own. One would think that I could love the Trailblazers, in that they have everything I like in a team...good young talent, role model players (I am a full time single Dad of a 6 and 4 year old, so I have to watch these things), Webster is a Seattle legend out of HS, and Roy played HS and college ball here. Not to mention Nate (Mr. Sonic) and Paul Allen (owns my beloved Seahawks) as owner. But for some reason I cant bring myself to cheer for the Blazers. I think the ugly/dirty city and the days of the "Jail Blazers" have jilted me... Help me out here! For some reason I still find myself cheering for KD, Green, and Westbrook!

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

These are not the jailblazers. I love this team and it's players. Outlaw and Rudy smile all game but compete hard. Oden is such a polite giant. Roy a quiet killer. Blake too. Lots to love.

RUKIDDINGMEDAVID

"No. But for the first time in 15 years I think there is a fair argument that LBJ could end up being better. Not saying it will happen. But he's special enough that it might." I'm not sure but I may have just lost all respect for you after that comment. Lebron is no Oscar, he's no Wilt, as a scorer and competitor he is no Kobe, he is most certainly no MJ. He's a freak of a player, a little different than anyone we have ever seen but he is not as talented offensively as Kobe in his prime by any means, not to mention defensively.

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

Listen. He's the best 18 year old ever. Ditto 19, 20, 21, 22. That's a start.

Ryan NY

Get ready for the following responses from LA LA Land: Kobe Hater, Laker Hater, West Coast Hater (excuse me if I missed any)

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Yep. I picked them to beat Boston last year in June. And tabbed Kobe as my MVP. I must really hate them.

Chris (Cali)

With the rules of today MJ wouldn't allowed to be the defender he was!!! But his career scoring avg would be atleast 3 points higher.

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Salient points, the both of them.

Disco Stu (Chicago)

Speaking of Jailblazers, do you think Telfair is actually becoming a real NBA PG in Minn?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

I did before last night.

JimmyZ (PHX, AZ)

Mr. Mchale would take Randy Foye over Brandon Roy anyday!

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

funny.

K-Dogg (Atlanta, GA)

If he keeps playing at his current pace, will Al Horford be an All-Star this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

He was averaging 8.8 and 8.8 before the game. Still lots of hoop to be played.

Jack (Chicago)

who is the first player to leave chicago in a trade?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Gotta be BG, right? He's too good to lose outright.

Disco Stu (Chicago)

How about the Spanish players in the league? Calderon, Gasols, Rudy? Rubio next year! Viva la NBA!

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Si.

D-Wade,Miami

Are there still any doubters?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

There never were. I hate that commercial.

Ted, The SLC

David, growing up I enjoyed watching a couple of underrated individual matchups...Stockton vs. Payton and Mailman vs. Buck Williams. Always tough, physical meetings with each player respecting the other. Do you have any like that, past or present?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

I liked Worthy vs. the Spurs guys. Anyone remember them?

john paxson (chicago)

who do i select in next years draft with my mid-lottery pick. hasheem thabeet? help me out thorpedo.

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Don't quit on the Bulls. I think they will figure it out.

Jon (mad-town)

The Bulls need an enforcer and a shutdown wing defender. Can Deng or Thomas develop into the latter? Who could they pick up to be their Charles Oakley or Dennis Rodman?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Deng has played good d, even very good d. Lebron beat him up a few times, but mostly he's been sharp. He can get better too.

Chad (Grand Rapids, MI)

80s comedies > 90s comedies > Most recent comedies like "Knocked Up"

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

I agree, but my brothers think I'm crazy.

Moohead (Cleveland via a Barn)

Is Zydrunas Ilgauskas underappreciated?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Yes!! Viva Big Z!

Eddie (Fresno)

Do you agree that the Kings have some of the most promising young depth in the league?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Thompson and Hawes are keepers to be sure. Douby a disappointment. Greene an unknown still. Bobby Brown could be a gem too!

David Fairborn, OH

False. Superbad was hilarious.

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

At times.

morgan (montreal)

how do teamates "communicate" on defense? do they just shout "i'm rotating"? please elaborate.

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

They tell each other where they are. And what is about to happen, and what is happening. They can encourage each other too.

Jack (Chicago)

Judging the recent play of Yi, do you think he will develop into an impact player and maybe even an All Star some day?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

Perhaps. Too up and down now to know for sure.

Jeff (NYC)

Should I be happy with D'antoni's coaching thus far?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

Thrilled.

Stan, VA

David, I can understand your rating of Lebron and D-Wade ahead of Kobe in your unofficial list of best NBA players. What are the areas you think they are that much better, as of today, please leave age aside though.

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

I think both are equally productive and more efficient. But it's really close.

joe(imola,italy

i do not get your attraction to jeff green as a player.his numbers last year were bad and he played a ton of minutes.this year he has not shown great improvement.what am i missing??

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

I liked a lot of things about him, but you are right. He's not put it together yet.

M (VA)

Can you explain why you rank Rudy Fernandez higher than D. Rose? I doubt that there is a single GM in this league that would pick Fernandez over Rose.

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

I'm not picking the most talented. It's more complicated than that.

Jon (Mad-town)

Do you think D'Antoni is happier with the money, or would he be happier with D-Rose?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

I think he just liked the offer that was in vs. what could be.

Mike (Toledo)

I think its funny when people can even compare Wade and LBJ. Wade did win a ring...WITH SHAQ!!!!! I love Z don't get me wrong, but Z is no Shaq. Sorry Thorpedo, I get frustrated when people say Wade is close to LeBron. LBJ has carried his team since he was 18 and finally he has a PG that can hit an open shot with regularity. I love it. So refreshing to the Cavs score many points and still play some good D.....even if they have Wally on their team.

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Mike, you are not watching #3 play in Miami. if you were, you'd understand.

Jack (Chicago) #1

Who's your sleeper team to make noise in the playoffs. (I know it's kinda early but...)

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Maybe Toronto.

a small guard who wants to know how parker/paul do it

any ideas on how to practise those runners/floaters/finishing in the lane?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

Yes, get your palm facing the rim on finishes.

C-Booz (Washington DC)

Coach, why no love for the Utah Jazz? Are we not rolling like ATL, LA and Boston?

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

There is love!

Joakim Noah

Will I eventually have a breakout year, or eventually be considered a bust?

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

I'm still a believer.

Your an idiot Thorpe!!!

Dwade has no outside jumper and you have him ranked above Kobe. Are you insane???

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

No outside jumper. Really?

Trevor (Rochester, NY)

Who do you think jumps as early mvp candidates? I know its kinda early but I was jus wondering...

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

The same guys as always, plus Bosh.

Mark (Boston)

Who is better Devin Harris or Rondo?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

Rondo.

Alan Smithee

I just noticed that Sacramento Kings point guard Bobby Brown is not listed in the top 50 rookie rankings. Given that he plays some 15 minutes a game (albeit on an injured team), does he not merit a spot on a list of best rookies in which some of the players have yet to play? He's just as much of a rookie as Greg Oden is. How did this get past Marc Stein?

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

He's number 13.

Mike Woodson (Hot-lanta

David, Should I make a move for Kaman? Which is better, Al Horford playing out of position at the 5 or Josh Smith playing out of position at the 3 if I go after Kaman? Marvin, Zaza and Speedy for Kaman? Marvin/Smooth/Horford or Smooth/Horford/Kaman?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

Al is fine at the 5. Stay with horses-that team is so athletic.

Chris (st paul, MN)

Curb Your Enthusiasm or Always Sunny ?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

Neither. Entourage is the only tv show I watch.

Jacob (Los Angeles)

Hey Thorpe, whats you take on Memphis as a team, in a few years they should be making some noise?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Should be is the operative subject.

Paul (California)

Hollinger has an insane man crush on Farmar. Would you take Farma or Rondo?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Rondo. So would he I bet.

Jason (Brooklyn)

Do your kids watch sports with you?

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

My son will watch any chance I give him, but we limit it. I'd rather he be reading or playing himself.

Davianka, Los Angeles Ca

U got the best job in the world!!

David Thorpe
  (1:01 PM)

Don't I know it!! Gotta run, see you all next week. Be safe!
