Thanks for joining -- we are starting to turn the corner toward national signing day -- many recruiting topics to cover today.
How big of a land was Eugene Smith for the Mountaineers!!!!
Bold statement but maybe the biggest and most important pickup for any team this year, particularly after losing Tajh Boyd
A bit raw and underdeveloped physically but all the tools are there to mold into a great one in their system. Don't forget about landing Steadman Bailey -- a real sleeper at WR.
Thanks for taking the question and great work! Is there any question that Boston College has clearly established themselves as the preeminent Catholic school in College football? Seriously, how long do you think it will be before BC is able to get some of those ND blue chip recruits that go to the Irish and under perform? Based on the numbers, the Eagles produce more successful NFL prospects? at least for the last 15 years? Thanks
I am not sure BC will ever beat out ND for top national prospects or even for their own regional talent
With their great academics, tradition and yes history of placing guys in the NFL you think they would at least challenge
BC is really struggling to land upper-tier prospects after one of its best seasons ever. Tom O'Brien made a living on molding/developing underrated prospects (from the Northeast) in their system and it looks like coach Jags is trying to do the same
They are winning so it's tough to argue.
Billy, What do you think of D.J. Fluker will he start at Alabama right away? If Andre Smith leaves for the NFL will he take his place?
Has a shot Brad, a kid who really moved up our board after reviewing senior film. Massive, strong and has all the tools.
In the event Chris Wells declares for the NFL, Ohio State will have a new starter at tailback. How much impact can Jamaal Berry have in his true freshman season? Can he make a quick transition?
Originally our top rated back this year and probably still one of the better all-around RBs. His ability to stay healthy has been an issue and that's the only concern I have when projecting his production as a true frosh
Might be better in a change of pace type role to start, still a homerun threat
Who in the lead for marlon Brown?
Brown is still very much open last I talked to him. Is looking to announce on signing day with in-state Tenn. in the lead in my opinion if they land a high profiled coach
Billy we have had a few big decommits already, is this good Tennessee class slowly going to break up?
I was surprised about Giles and there may be a few more here and than but the nucleus should stay intact until they at least announce a new coach, who I assume will be a big name.
Keeping assist coach Drayton on board like UCLA did w/ DeWayne Walker is important in my opinion.
Idea on where linebacker Frank Telfort is going and when he is making his deceision. Thanks
He had a great visit to USC and think it will come down to the Trojans or in-state Gators. Florida has had this kid at the top of their LB board for quite some time -- I expect a hard fight to retain him
Expect a decision on signing day, possible on ESPN.
Will the Nole fans ever see EJ Manuel on the field and did he red shirt this year?
I believe they are trying to bring him along slow but expect he will be the face of this program soon enough. A great talent at QB
Did you envision this many Freshman making an impact at Miami?(They were the ESPN Top Rated Class) and from who is Commited to Miami now for 2009 who do you see making such an impact?
Brian, yes we actually did. Got to see a few of their guys at the Under Armour game like OLB Sean Spence and realized how special they were.
I think you will see some DBs making an impact next year, guys like Kent, McGee and Jamal Reid (big sleeper) have great size and athleticism.
Would you still consider Devon Kennard a trojan lean?
Nick at this point I would. Did a feature on him a few weeks ago, what a determined, high character kid. No question in my mind he will be back to 100 percent. He said mid-march is the goal.
Can you tell me about Pitt's latest commit Jason Douglas and who else you think my Panthers will close on down the stretch?
Douglas is a bit small but a big-time playmaker in our eyes. Vastly underrated with his great speed and quickness as a space player in the spread.
I like Pitts chances with the Merrell brothers out of DE. Two talented defenders with great upside
Billy I saw steve williams drop oklahoma in favor of Cal what are your thoughts on him? Think Cal has a chance to sway Randall Carroll off his USC commitment? and maybe land Kennard? I know big wish list.
I really like him as an off-man corner, very quick feet and smooth hips. Will come up and smack you too.
Might have a more difficult time landing the other two -- still a bit surprised about Williams and will try and get the scoop
How does last week's loss to Iowa affect Penn State's recruiting? Any news on Jenkins, Newsome or Mcneal?
It doesn't help, but when a program like PSU with its storied tradition loses a game -- it doesn't make that big of an impact on recruits as most think. Think they are still in the mix for all three and still having a great season
Billy, Can you talk about what's left out there for Penn State, what there chances are and how last week's loss could affect things? They still have a good shot at the Rose Bowl.
One more on question on PSU. Good shot at the Rose Bowl, control their own destiny-- but they better hope it's not versus USC
You thoughts on ND getting Shaq Evans?
Another explosive playmaker with size to play opposite of M. Floyd. Kid has both big-catch and big-play ability after the grab.
I think Weis will make it through this year (w/ his job) but he has to start producing offensively with guys like Evans, Wood, Floyd, D. Walker, Tate, etc
how do you think the gators will do this year in recruiting?
Meyer is one of the few coaches not in favor of an early signing period -- cause he closes! Should close strong again in 2009.
Hey Billy, Any idea where Kevin Newsome will end up? I heard it is a VT/PSU/BC battle.
Think it is down to those three with BC as a long shot.
The Eagles recently offered and quickly landed a commit from an unknown sleeper QB Marscovetra (who we like) out of NJ
Maybe showing that its a long shot w/ Newsome
If a coaching staff changes coordinators or assistants, would this have a great impact on recruits if the head coach is still there?
Absolutely, it can go both ways. You saw Tennessee go out of T. Pryor's final mix when Cutcliffe left for Duke
Players sometimes get more attached to their specific recruiter/assistant coach
read in the Midwest recruiting blog that Michigan is in the early top 2 for '10 Tampa QB Christian Green, what's your evaluation of him, and how hard will it be to get him out of Florida?
Green does lack size and polished mechanics but is a playmaker with both his arm and legs. Very fast, fluid and explosive as an athlete, but will surprise you with the natural zip he puts on the football.
Could be a nice fit for Coach Rods system but do think it might be tough to lure him out of Florida. Still very early though to speculate.
Will the Noles finish strong and pick up some of the undecided recruits and will they hold on to all their verbal commits?
Bowden use to be the closer but lately they have been striking early. Potential top-10 class, outside shot at Ray Ray Armstrong and Brandon Smith
Talk to me Billy, whats the word Manti Te'o? Who's hot on the UCLA trail?
Outside shot but still think it will come down to USC or ND. His RB teammate Hilliard committing to the Bruins does help...he is a good one, very versatile
Will Georgia finish by getting Smith, Jones and Myles?
Jeff I would say yes, particularly with Smith and Myles. Myles is looking to decide on signing day and Smith at our Under Armour game
ND's biggest issue this year is probably the defensive line. They seem unable to pressure the QB and stop the run. Any help in the near future on the defensive front?
Yes in a big way with DT Tyler Stockton who appears to be a firm commit
LSU and Les Miles is having a great recuiting year. Do think that LSU will sign most of their ESPN 150 recruits and which uncommitted LSU interested 150's do you think will end up at LSU?
LSU has the most ESPNU 150 prospect right now with 10 and could end up signing the most with prospects like WR Randle, safety Holloman and a handful of others still listing the Tigers as one of their top schools of interest.
At No. 2 in our class rankings released yesterday and should challenge USC for the top spot in Feb.
USC- Will Pat Hall end up on Defense?
With USC's great depth at RB I think you will see the physical Hall start out on defense, a hybrid safety or eventual OLB.
He has excellent range, that quick-twitch burst that makes him real disruptive near the line of scrimmage and can create turnovers -- Carroll's main goal on defense.
His success may be dictated by his continued physical development.
any Michigan news on the horizon? are we still lookin good for Vlad Emilien? what about OLs Quinton Washington & Taylor Lewan? Both seemed high on Mich but i feel like i haven't heard much recently ...
We spoke with Emilen last week and Michigan looks to be strongly in the mix. Said he will be making an announcement around Thanksgiving
Really tough, solid safety prospect who is underrated in our eyes. Said he was recovering well from his injuryt
Matt barkley Struggles due to?
Mainly not having the weapons and supporting cast around him he had last year.
Still an outstanding quarterback and presumably took a lot out of this year to grow on.
Wow a lot of good questions today.Take care everyone, got to run. Look forward to chatting again soon.
