Greetings from Nashville, Fight Freaks. I'm here for tomorrow night's Jermain Taylor-Jeff Lacy fight. We have plenty to discuss. Make sure you check out today's story on the fight and this week's blogs. And remember -- check the schedule before asking a banishment-worthy question. Let's get to it.
Hey Dan - good Friday afternoon (or morning still). Should we expect the winner tomorrow night to be on the fast track to be the "recognized" 168 Champ, or do you believe it'll be hard to unify withing the division? Thanks
The winner of Taylor-Lacy will be a mandatory for a shot at an alphabet belt, but with Calzaghe leaving the division it's wide open as to who can claim the real title. Kessler is there, Bute, the winner tomorrow. It will take a little while to all play out.
Why would Super Joe want to risk his legacy continuing on? There will always be a "next one".
You are right and that is what Joe is probably going to stuggle with. Fighters fight, and Joe is a fighter.
I would love to see a Calzaghe-Dawson fight but I do understand that Dawson dosn't bring a lot of $ to the table. What does he have to do or how long before mainstream boxing fans will get to know him?
He needs to be able to draw fans and sell tickets and make himself a draw. That means a promoter to work on that (which Gary Shaw is doing). But talent does not = stardom. Right now, Chad is really good but not a star. His fight with Tarver drew a pathetic crowd.
What did you think about Bika destroying Manfredo last night? Is Bika in line for a world Title, and should Manfredo hang em up for goood?
I have not seen the fight yet since I am in Nashville. But I heard about it and will watch on the DVR on Sunday. I can't say the result surprised me. I have never thought much of Manfredo as a legit contender. Bika fits in the mix with anyone at 168. I know he already lost to Calzaghe and Bute but I'd like to see him in with anyone -- the winner of Taylor-Lacy, Andrade (a war), maybe as a big test for a Dirrell or Andre Ward. Maybe Allan Green. There are lots of good fights out there for him.
Danno, your pick for tommorrow night's Taylor/Lacy fight and how long will the winner have to wait for their mandatory shot?
I lean to Taylor, who's a little fresher and a quicker. But I really don't know. I do think it will be a good fight. The winner will be the mandatory for the Froch-Pascal winner on Dec. 6 and because that winner will have won a vacant title their next fight is supposed to be the mandatory under the WBC's rules, if they decide to follow them. So that means the winner could face tomorrow's winner maybe in March or April. But if Taylor wins, I think they may try to throw themselves into the mix for a fight with Calzaghe at 175.
D$$ - Watch RJJ vs Calzaghe, I couldn't help but think it reminded me of the way Sugar Ray Leonard went out against Terry Norris. I hated seeing Roy taking all that punishment.
I did too and funny thing is Leonard fought Norris in the Garden also. Personally, I really thought Calzaghe carried Roy in the final few rounds and let him survive instead of knocking him out.
Dan, if Joe won't give him a rematch, could you ever see Bernard fighting again? There's like, NOBODY out there. I'd like to see him give Glen Johnson a rematch - they fought way back when, didn't they?
I think Bernard will find something to do. Yes, he did beat Glen way back when at middleweight. In fact, he gave Johnson his first loss and is still the only man to stop him.
Dan, Were you surprised by the low PPV #'s for Jones-Calzaghe? Do you think it is a bad omen for the upcoming PPV de la Hoya-Pacquiao match?
No PPV numbers have been released yet on the show so anything you are reading is pure speculation by people not involved in the show.
Dan, I see that you have Winky Wright fighting in Snoqualmie on 12/4. I checked with the casino and they didn't know anything about it, and Golden Boy hasn't gotten back to me. Any idea when it will be formally announced or when tickets will go on sale?
Tickets go on sale Nov. 15, according to a Golden Boy press release I received today. Tickets will start at $50.
How in the world does holyfield get a shot at the title against valuev?
How do the WBA officials sleep at night?
how exactly does a boxing ring get stolen Dan?
In a perfect boxing world, there wouldn't be talk about Dawson's marketability and drawing power. He is clearly at the top of the light heavy food chain and should be treated as such. If Joe doesn't want to fight, then retire and keep it moving. Then Dawson and can battle it out with the next in line for the legit title: Ring Mag. My question, who would Dawson fight?
It's all nice and fuzzy to talk like you are but in reality boxing is also a serious business and drawing power and marketability is a very important part of making fights. Just a fact of life that will never ever change.
Any network gonna cover Holyfield-Valuev?
Doubtful, but it is likely to end up on US TV as a small PPV.
Is Paul WIlliams done at 147? I would love to see him eventually rule the MW division
I just filed a story a few minutes ago with the news that he officially vacated his 147 belt today.
Dan, if you have any pull, please prevent Manfredo from being on TV anymore...thanks
I think a third-round blowout loss ought to do the trick without any help from me needed.
I assumed Deontay Wilder is campaigning at heavyweight (not cruiserweight)? Either way, has HBO confirmed it will show highlights of his debut?
Wilder is a heavyweight. I actually ran into him and his trainers last night at the hotel and he seemed really excited for the fight. He's a really nice guy and sure has the physical attributes you need for a heavyweight. I wish him nothing but success. As far as I am told, HBO has the rights to televise highlights if they so desire.
Dan..any inside info on why Duddys fight was cancelled ?
He's had a major falling out with his promoters at Irish Ropes.
Ya think Monte has a shot against Haye? I think its going to be a close UD for Haye
Sure, Monte has a chance. He's a real heavyweight and he had Valuev hurt in their fight not all that long ago. Haye has a fragile chin so anything is possible.
who will be on the broadcast for HBO tomorrow? Does Vandy win on Saturday?
Lampley, Emanuel and Larry are on the call.
Is the Margo-Mosely fight been officially signed and official.
Mosley is on board, Golden Boy and Top Rank have an agreement between them. However, Margarito and his managers are still mulling it over and it may not happen.
Dan, Have you run into Cintron at all since you've been out there? Curious on his mindset after getting beat down by Margarito again? Do you think he handles Ndou pretty easily on Saturday?
I saw Kermit last night at the hotel. He seemed pretty serious about the fight. I think he will win somewhat easily.
Any Nate Campbell news to report?
Nothing really new. I spoke with his adviser Terry Trekas the other day and they are just awaiting the bankruptcy to wind its way through system. There is also a purse bid upcoming for Nate's mandatory against Funeka. After the bid, they'll see what they want to do.
Are those rumors of Hatton have weight trouble true or bogus ?
I have heard that he is struggling pretty badly. I saw Ricky in September in Vegas and he was nowhere near weight.
What are the odds they do make the Arce-Darchy fight? Thats a fight Ive been wanting to see for a long time.
I hope they make it. It's a fun fight and one both guys could make good money for.
dan, tell me margarito isnt' serious about not taking the mosley fight. the only active fighter out there who is going to bring more money to the table is the golden boy, and we know that's not happening win or lose in december.
I have no idea what is in Margaritio's mind if he turns the fight down.
Mr. Rafael, we see no problem in the results of the WBC election of the honorable Jose Sulaiman.
Vin Dan-siel, Where can I find a De La Hoya - Pacquiao Dream Match t-shirt??
Probably at the MGM the week of the fight.
Solo Boxeo's done (and what a fight for it to go out on), so's WNF. So how do fighters who are a cut below BAD or FNF get TV exposure now?
That's the question we are all pondering.
I know Joe sounds like he is on the fence, but this isn't your first rodeo Dan. Do you think he'll fight once more in Wales? I'd love to see him in against the Road Warrior but I know it'll never happen.
I do think Joe will fight again. Who will he fight? Anyone's guess. I would also like to see him fight Johnson as long he's not going to fight Dawson.
Unless Manny beats Oscar, Calzaghe now the clear Fighter of the Year favorite?
I would say he's up there. Margarito could also be a serious candidate.
I thought Joe C. was badly hurt in the 1st round. Did you?
Not sure I would say "badly" but he was definitely hurt.
Dan what do you know about Luis Agbregu? Another Oganov or better skills?
I've seen a couple of his fights. Better skill but we won't know until he faces a solid opponent.
With Roy being more cooperative at his older age, do you see him ever commentating for HBO again?
I do see that sometime in the future, but for now HBO's jobs are all filled.
Do you think Calzaghe will be remembered as one of the greats? Or does he still need to beat a "top dog" to become recognized?
What do you want the man to do? He beat prime titleholders like Kessler and Lacy. He beat legendary names in Hopkins (who is still quality) and Jones. I'd say he proved his point.
I saw that Angulo called out Chavez Jr. at the WBO convention. Sounds like a decent scrap, but just about zero chance of it happening, right?
No chance. Top Rank won't get their guy killed. Angulo vs. Chavez might go three rounds.
With Rahman and Holyfield getting title shots how long until the young prospects Tua, Grant, or Akinwande get one? It is the 90's right?
Have you seen my eyeglasses?
Her scorecard on Salita-Campos was a disgrace and she should be fired.
Dan if WNF is cut from ESPN's schedule, they could easily end FNF as well? Then what would boxing look like?
A giant black hole in the US.
With the Duddy cancellation is the Hearns fight still planned?
I spoke to Lou DiBella here in Nashville last night and he says it's still on and no issues.
Dan, Terrible news this week. SoloBoxeo will be dearly missed. Have you heard anything about any other network picking it up?
What's next for future undisputed welterweight champion of the world Ricardo Williams Jr.
You're banned for either being an idiot or for coming up with the lamest joke ever. Either way, see ya.
I hate this chat. It lasts too long. I quit.
I saw Dawson Tarver at the Pearl and its an AWESOME small venue for a fight
I agree. I have been to two cards there and it's one of the best small venues I've ever been in,
Its's time to rank em Dan. I do have Calzaghe going to the hall of fame but however the fact remains. Hopkins and Jones will still rank higher. And the only way for him to pass them is to continue on beating for top contenders
Historically speaking, I would rank Jones, Hopkins and Calzaghe in that order.
DTM, as a silver lining, might the elimination of WNF and Solo Boxeo raise the quality of fighters on FNF, if for no other reason than it's one of the only ways to give prospects TV exposure?
There is no silver lining for 60-plus TV dates getting canned.
Does my administration have your permission to disband heavyweight boxing if there's ever a Rahman/Holyfield rematch for the unified world title?
Dan, first off excellent blog about the DLH/Pac PPV price and the economy. Second, you heard anything else about HBO either showing or not showing the Klitschko vs Rahman fight?
Dan Duddy and McGirt, Jr. are going to appear on the same card in January. Is it just a coincidence that Duddy pulled out of his fight the same day that McGirt, Jr. had a draw in his tuneup on Tuesday?
Thanks. HBO will show the Klitschko-Rahman fight. They have a deal and are finalizing it.
I admit it, I stole the boxing ring. I need to train for my December fight and I can't afford to buy my own ring anymore.
Dan, Props to you and Jorge for suggesting the book "Four Kings" I picked it up on Saturday and couldn't put it down. Have you had a chance to read it yet? Freaks, believe me, it's a must read for any boxing fan!
I have been reading it. It's outstanding. A terrific job by our own ESPN.com contributor George Kimball.
FYI -- just posted: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=3702662
hi dan i read your blog and was wondering what fight next week will be the better fight molitor vs celestino or hatton vs magglianni?
Both are worthy matches. I think they could actually play out similarly.
Halelluljah! I see on the schedule that Linares is fighting soon - any word on what plans there may be for him after this fight?
How about we get him into the ring for this fight first and then worry about that?
Dantonio Sabado Jr., Whats your favorite boxing movie?
Any new news on Pavlik fighting in Ohio?
Arum is planning on it for Feb. 21 against Rubio, with or without HBO. He told me he will go PPV if HBO or Showtime aren't interested.
Just saw this morning that the Taylor-Lacy fight and the replay of RJJ-Calzaghe are the only televised fights. Any reason for the undercard not being shown?
Because like most shows, HBO is showing two fights, the main event and the replay. The others may interest hardcore fans but are not big enough fights for HBO. That is one of the reasons I am here -- so I can see a bunch of fights that interest me that I could have seen on TV.
Is Arum thinking a split site PPV..I dont think that has ever happend before?
Yes, Bob talked about doing that.
Welcome, Dan. Are my fellow Nashvillians showing you the honour and respect befetting a man of your greatness?
So far so good. Went to an excellent sports bar near the hotel with a bunch of boxing folks to watch the Jets-Pats game last night.
I hope this doesn't remove Freak status, but I will miss the live showing of the fight tomorrow night (although I'll be recording it and watching it later) for box tickets to ACDC at the Verizon Center.
That's a pretty strong reason and I absolve you. Besides KISS, I've always loved AC/DC. The first record (yes, it was a record) I ever bought was an AC/DC album.
WHat is the next 24/7 for HBO after De La Hoya/Pacquiao?
Nothing is planned. They decide on making 24/7 shows as fights are presented.
Any opponent for Quartey? The longer that goes the more I think he wont fight like last year.
Yes, there is an opponent. DiBella mentioned it last night but couldn't remember the name.
Adam "The Swamp Donkey" Richards. Now that's a nickname.
It is an all-time great.
For those about to box....WE SALUTE YOU!
wait, the cintron/ndou fight is not televised?
No, not in the US.
How bout this for a boxing nickname - Dan "The Banisher" Rafael
is there any talk about vasquez vs marquez IV in 2009?
Yes, although nothing is set at this point. Vazquez is weighing his options.
Danno! I spoke to one of the local promoters here in Denver this week, and they are getting ready to sell tickets for Dec. 19th as the last Solo Boxeo event featuring Mike Alvardo. Any truth to this? and who might he fight? (they weren't telling that tidbit)
Yes, Alvarado will headline the final Solo Boxeo but he has no opponent yet.
Dan, you can banish me if you want, but if YOU can't see boxing as a dying sport than you are just plain dumb! All of the televised boxing coverage is being cancelled, no good heavyweight divison, crummy PPV's, and now MMA is getting more exposure. Explain now, how boxing is doing just fine?? Also people would rather save their money than fork out 50 bucks to watch crap like last Saturday!!
You're a nationalistic idiot. Go ask the Brits if boxing is dying, or the Germans, or the Japanese, or the Mexicans, or the Panamanians, or Argentines, etc... Boxing thrives in many places around the globe. Is it having problems in the US? Sure. But the reason for Solo Boxeo being canceled, for example, is not because they don't want boxing on or it's not successful. It is all the economy. The network is cutting back everything because of the debt load from when it was purchased.
Bob from Oakland is an angry elf...
Rob, let's have a talk..
Biko called out hopkins last nite what is your that on this match?
Bika shouldn't hold his breath.
Waiter, make sure Rob is well done before I consume him please.
to Rob, you're an idiot! MMA is also cancelling organizations - elite XC
Dantastic! I think I have about it had with stupid commentators and writers. On the Jim Rome show, some dope made the comment that "Boxing was dying" when it was referenced to MMA after Jim Rome had Dana White on for "Alone with Rome." From now on, any ESPN show that discusses boxing needs to have "The King Freak" there to lay the smack down on ridiculous comments like the one made on Rome's show.
Is Afflicition/Golden Boy still pursuing the idea of a mixed card? Any updates on that?
As I wrote in a notebook a few weeks ago, the mixed card idea was scrapped, thankfully.
Rom I am surprised you can even spell MMA!
Rafael vs Rob from Oakland...The World Awaits
60/40 and I'll kick his...
Dan, Is Devon Alexander going to be on the Versus card in December with Cunningham?
Probably, but that has not been officially done yet.
Ryan. That was....(extended pause)....not cool.
Did you talk to the HBO guys after the Calazghe fight? Were they suprised how one-sided it was?
Have you asked Golden Boy about those "Ring" shirts he's been wearing? Is Afflicition making those shirts?
Yes, Golden Boy licensed the rights to the Ring logo and covers for them to make shirts out of. I saw some samples at the press conference in Vegas a few months ago and they were really cool.
Epic take, Dan. That did. not. suck.
Fighting out of the Blue Corner, wearing a beard, withi his entourage consisting of the Bat Phone and his cats, introducing the Undisputeed, Undefeated Champion of the WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRLLLLLLLLLDDDDDDDD!! "The King Freak" Dan RAFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFAAAAAAAAAAEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!
Be careful or Buffer will sue.
Good point Dan. I guess I'll start looking for apartments in Britain, or Mexico, or Panama, or Argentina so that I can enjoy my favorite sport more frequently.
I know that vazquez vs marquez 3 was a war. But i watched the matagwa vs villa live and that fight has my fight of the year vote. If you had to vote today which fight would you vote for?
Mtagwa-Villa was sensational but I still think Vazquez-Marquez gets the nod based on action AND significance.
Dan, with DiBella getting 10 dates on versus what kind fights are we gonna get? Freaks should compile wish list to be forwarded to Lou, please!!!
Let's be perfectly clear: DiBella DOES NOT HAVE 10 VERSUS dates. When will you learn not to believe BS on Web sites that do not attribute so-called "news." How's this: DiBella himself told me he didn't have 10 Versus dates. He has no guaranteed Versus dates nor do any promoters at this point. Be careful what you read out there.
Did I mention that the "report" of DiBella having 10 Versus dates was simply made up without a shred of truth to it?
DTm, sorry I have been gone for a while but I'm back. True or False? Dawson can make himself a star and get the Calzaghe fight in WALES by luring Hopkins into the ring and beating him? to me this is the only way he gets Super Joe.....
Don't ban me, Dan -- this is actually a boxing question. In the UFC fight tomorrow, Brock Lesnar is seen to have an advantage because his fists are abnormally large compared to an average heavyweight. Having seen many "tales of the tape," can you think of any boxer who enjoyed a similar advantage?
Going to the Hatton fight next week. First big fight in Vegas for me. Anything I should look out for in the undercard? Also, how do I get information on the weigh-in?
Enjoy! The co-feature is a nice fight with Kirkland and Vera. There are some good prospects on the undercard as well, so get there early to see everything. The weigh in on Friday afternoon in the arena but I do not know the exact time. However, it will be open to the public, so just ask at the front desk or look for signs.
Why do you give Lacy a shot against JT? He was destroyed in his only shot against top competition and was life and death against Manfredo. It just seems that based on both quality of performance and quality of opposition, Taylor has to be the overwhelming favorite.
I think Taylor should be the favorite. My reasons for thinking Jeff has a solid shot is because I think he's really up for this fight, unlike Manfredo or Mendoza. He is also a bigger guy and has a good chin. I'm no picking him, but offering reasons why if he wins it should not be a shocker at all.
Dan, please tell the freaks what they should expect from 10 dates that DiBella just got from Versus! Cuz last night was shabby with the Contender as promoter!! your take?
My take is you should read what I wrote earlier: HE DOES NOT HAVE ANY GUARANTEED VERSUS DATES.
Are you going to Holt/Torres? I got my tickets this morning and I'm going to need someone to wake me and my friend up after Yuri Foreman fights.
I do plan to be there.
Dan what was the reason for Shaw and Arum not getting along?
They've been in lawsuits ever since the cancellation of Corrales-Castillo 3.
Is there any word on JuanMa's opponent for Dec 6th? Knowing the WBO i'm shuddering at the possibilities.
At this point, and after much negotiating on the money, it's going to be Sergio Medina.
Dan, if for some reason Calzaghe fought a rematch with BHop do you believe Beranrd would be willing to fight in England.
Bernard said he would go to the UK to fight him again.
OK Papa, you saw my fight. I'm ready to listen to you now. What next?
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. I think you'll be back next year on Telemundo and then hopefully into a bigger fight.
I think the best way for Calzaghe to go out would be against Glen Johnson in front of atleast 40,000 fans in Wales. Great atmospehere for him to retire in plus a tough opponent who will be willing to trade!
Where does Berto go if Mosely fights Margo, who should Berto fight?
DiBella is talking with King about the mandatory with Collazo.
I can't ever recall Roy being cut prior to last week. To your knowledge was that first bad cut of his career?
Yes, first bad one. And his cutman had no clue what to do.
I read somewhere that Rayonte Whitfield is taking on Omar Narvaez in Argentina - can he win?
Whitfield is the mandatory so it could go down in Argentina, but as far as I know nothing is done. Whitfield is co-promoted by DiBella and Brian Young and they're going to be at the fight tomorrow night, so I will have to ask.
DTM, your thoughts on Kessler - Dawson? Kessler's promoter says HBO pitched it to him, but he shot it down........
Tremendous fight. I know it has been discussed. I am not surprised they weren't interested.
Is there any truth to the rumor about HBO significantly scaling back the 09 boxing budget due to ratings (or lack thereof) and the economy?
I had the exact conversation with HBO's Ross Greenburg at lunch in New York last week and he said it is not true. I take the man at his word.
Look, Dan, I know what the odds are, and they're 100% right, but for a lifelong Holyfield fan, can you construct any POSSIBLE HYPOTHETICAL scenario where he beats Valuev, or at least avoids being totally blow out? Sigh...I didn't think so.
Other than the luckiest shot ever, no. I give him maybe a 2% chance to win.
I hate reading that fights were affected by cutmen "not knowing what to do." Who is the best cutman in the business in your mind?
There are a lot of good ones. Off the top of my head you have experienced guys like Miguel Diaz, Joe Sousa and Danny Milano.
Speaking of Torres-Holt, is the winner still looking into fighting Bradley? I havent heard anything about that in several weeks.
The winner, from my understanding, is contractually obligated to fight Bradley.
I don't have any kids in Switzerland do I?
Not yet. Give it about 10 months.
although Roy's cutman didnt do a good job, him blaming his cutman for the loss, which he did in a recent interview is ridiculous and pure sour grapes
I agree. He didn't lose because of the cut. He lost because he got his butt kicked.
Verus will fill the void of wnf just on thursday. And I hope all of the promotors set up dates to fight on verus. Not just Diebella
Didn't you hear??????????? DiBella has 10 dates!! Wasn't that on the Internet?????????????????????
It was the cut! The cut punched me 300 times!
Is it true that Arum is going to do Cotto's and Pavlik's doubleheader as an independent PPV?
If he can't get a network to buy it, he told me the other day that that is indeed his plan.
As a fan it hurts to see a great fighter you've pulled for for so long take a beating like RJJ did. Age catches up to everyone, even a fighter as fast as Roy was. The beauty of this sport though is that there is always a new fighter with a new story waiting to capture the fans attention.
Do you think Roy Jones would have beaten Joe at his best?
Dan, any news on the arbitration outcome involving the ghost guerrero?
Wouldn't Arum be better served to try to sell the Pavlik-Cotto doubleheader on network television as opposed to trying to do a PPV?
Of course, he would like to. But what if no network wants to buy it or doesn't want to pay a price Arum wants for it?
I predict a brutal beating for Lacy tomorrow, he won't be able to get past the jab and will catch follow up bombs all night.
That is certainly possible.
Why do you think that Calzaghe is such a good fighter? He pitty pats his oppenents to a decision! I guess that would explain it!
Hmmmmmmmmmm, let's see? He's 46-0, beat a lot of quality opponents and is a legit two-division champion? Other than that he sucks.
Do you really think Arum has the stones to do an independent PPV with Cotto & Pavlik in this climate? That's a lot of at-risk cash for Arum between purses, site rentals, setup, TV distribution, advertising, etc. I have no real insight but I think he's bluffing. It's one thing to do a Latin Fury, but quite another to go big time as an independent when the economic world is completely in the tank.
I think Bob can do what he wants. I think to do a show like that on PPV is a disaster unless he gets the fighters to fight for very short money.
Uhh..Roberto, those aren't pitty-pats. Trust me.
Bob Arum is the most depressing economist ever.
What is HBO showing on TV tomorrow?
We've been over it but just to be clear: replay of Calzaghe-Jones, Taylor-Lacy and MAYBE clips of Deontay Wilder's pro debut.
Any word on how final ticket sales were for Joe-Roy? Was it a papered house?
Lots of paper, but according to the commission, they sold about 9,200 tickets, but many were heavily discounted.
Heard Glen Johnson said Calzaghe pulled out of a fight with him three times before. Is that true?
Yes, it is true. Two hand injuries and a back injury.
So Jaidon Codrington struggled to beat a guy that was 8-20, his career is pretty much done now right?
Rau'shee Warren is staying in the amateur ranks... After seeing what the judges did to him in China, I can't fathom it... Thoughts, Dan?
what a terrible shame that solo boxeo is folding. so disappointing Dan
I've been depressed about it for a week.
MAR beats Sammy Ventura and he's the mandatory for Campbells WBO belt? What a joke
Why do the things that the corrupt organizations do surprise you?
Any scoops on FNF? Hopefully coming back to AC at Bally's?
None of the fights are official, but likely we will see Ngoudjo-Urango from Montreal on there Jan 30 and also a fight in January between Carlos Quintana and Eromosele Albert at 154.
Dan, any possible scenario to eliminate sanctioning bodies within a few years?
A plague that destroys the earth.
Do you think we will see Valero vs. Pitalua before the end of the year?
Probably not before the end of the year, but I would think in early 2009.
Dan, do you know if there's an open public weigh in today?
Yes, 5:15 pm local time at the student rec center at Vandy.
I've read a few times about RJJ playing a semi-pro basketball game on the same day as a fight. Have you heard the story? Which fight was it before?
It's true. There was a big feature on HBO about it and everyone wrote about it before the fight. I believe it was before he fought Eric Lucas.
DTM, now how are we gonna find out who is "el mas macho"?
You continue to depress me about the end of Solo Boxeo.
How much better is tomorrow's undercard than last week's?
It's off tv, but I think it's a lot better.
What do you think about Thompson vs. Toney, does the winner get a title shot agains Vitali?
Anything is possible in this era of horrible heavyweight fights.
Hey Dan, your blog is COMPLETELY mindless!! you of all people ought to know better...tecate is offering a $20 rebate for the fight! how in the world is that not a deal? you say oscar should lower the ppv price, but why? they got tecate to offer a rebate!!
The Tecate offer is terrific but not everybody buys Tecate beer for a PPV nor should they have to to in order to get a discount.
If a plague destroys the earth, the WBC will sanction two cockroaches squaring off for the middleweight title. For a fee, of course.
We watched the beating on ppv, how bad was it in person?
Hey Dan Please answer this for me, as I had to leave work early. Last weekend I saw the Calzache PPV at a sports bar in NJ. Is this even legal? If it is, why do you basically never hear bars advertising showing the big fights? Or is this bar just breaking the law? Please answer this for me... Have a great weekend...
It's legal if they licensed to show it through the promoter. If not, it was illegal.
Dan if Golota had his head screwed on straight how good do you feel he could have been?
He had has much talent as any heavyweight of his era. But no heart at all and no ring smarts at all.
So, DTM, let me get this straight. DiBella has no versus dates, correct?? Please note sarcasm.
Correct (no sarcasm).
OK, Freaks, thanks for the chat. Enjoy the fight tomorrow. Talk to you next week from Vegas, where I will be covering Hatton-Malignaggi. Peace.
