Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Just got back from enriching the minds of a bunch of grade school kids, thanks to the "Great American Teach -In". Of course, if our dropout rate increases dramatically in a few years, we'll know why. :( The interesting "Hansel und Gretel" is playing, and we're ready to roll. "Excuse you".

Goodie (Tampa)

Thorpe, Have you seen D Cook for the Heat yet this year? He is starting to look like a player. Your thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

I have. Not sure if you are right, but he does have a chance. He can be a special shooter.

Jason (Denver)

Melo is dominating the glass this year, does he have the potential to be a 20-10 guy?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Yes.

Don Nelson (SF)

I don't like to play rookies but I got a guy who is forcing the issue scoring 62 points shooting 72% from the field, he's already made a mockery of the draft.

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Is he ever. Morrow for MVP!

Matt (Chicago)

Why does Noah look a lot slower this year? Too much weed and cheetos in the off-season?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

I think he's still adjusting to the new system. He'll be fine.

John, Hanalei, HI

Who would you draft #1, Ricky Rubio, Blake or BJ?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

I have to watch a lot more than I have to this point.

Andrew (College Station, Tx)

Are the rockets legit title contenders this year

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Probably not.

Luc Mbah a Moute

David, I believe you owe me and the great nation of Cameroon an apology - have you seen me rebound, I'm a demon on the boards and certainly far better than what you initially thought I would be. Are you man enough to admit that you were woefully wrong about the Prince?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

I believe I have him fairly ranked. I love his intangibles, and he's scoring better than I would have expected. He looks like a keeper.

Brett (oakland)

This Morrow Kid is exciting, who does he remind you of ? Reminds me of a Vernon Maxwell, minus the Mad Max

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

He's nowhere near the athlete Max was (Max and I went to college together), but probably a far better person.

Brian (Sacramento, CA)

OJ Mayo - finally starting to live up to the hype? His defense is really underrated, no?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

No to the underrated. But he obviously is a player, as expected.

James (Charlotte)

Do you think future Piston Lebron James will look good in the red, white, and blue?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

That move would shock me.

Justin (West Lafayette)

How many players like Morrow do you think go undrafted or a better question how does a player like Morrow not get drafted?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Europe is filled with Morrow's. Their is incompetence at every level of every industry. Why should the NBA be any different?

Brian (Sacramento, CA)

Jason Thompson looks really good - should the Kings be playing Hawes and Thompson more together?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

It's a long season. Both should get plenty of reps.

Nasir, Philly

What's Rose's ceiling? Second best PG behind CP3?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Maybe higher.

Jason (Brooklyn)

Hakeem in 1994 or Shaq in 2000, choose the form of the destructor.

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Daddy.

Sean, Philippines

Your fearless forecast on the standing of the Lakers?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

They appear to be the strongest and deepest team we have in the league.

Tyler (St. Louis, Mo.)

What kind of beatdown is David Stern going to deliver on Mark Cuban?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

I thought the bit on Truehoop about this was very enlightening. It's not nearly as bad as it sounds. Let's let the system play out first.

Tom (Jersey)

Thorper, thanks for not being a homer for yur boy Courtney Lee. I'm a transplant from Orlando and they still my team, and your analysis on him is fair.

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

He was a student of mine in the summer, but being objective is not hard. I have to be for both espn and as a coach, otherwise how can I measure progress?

Franco (Philly)

Thorpedo how about my boy Thaddeus Young? Could he be the 76ers best player right now?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

He really is making the game easy for himself.

Mark (Orlando)

JJ started last night and played 34 minutes. Will he start to become part of the rotation or are his days in Orlando numbered?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

I still think he can be a contributor. Credit to SVG for sticking with him.

Majeed

Guess you're forgetting the Dream abusing Shaq in the Finals!

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Read the question. You say "Destructor", I say daddy.

Jesse (MI)

Why does ESPN spend so much time on articles evaluating the MVP race less than a month into the season when everyone knows it's more important to end hot than start hot? This shouldn't even be a topic of conversation until January at the very earliest.

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

Jesse, my suggestion is for you to not click the link that opens up this section. Others seem to like it.

Kosta Koufos (SLC)

Update my profile please. My shot is imperfect but it is not flat and I am NOT slow (relative to my size).

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

You got it. I'll watch him this week.

Ed. Fort Lauderdale

First of all, GO GATORS! Calathes looks like a stud! What's up with Beasley? I was expecting a little bit more from him, is he too small to play with the men?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Scouts are going nuts for Calathes. He's a brilliant passer and plays so hard-a rare combination. Beas is fine. He'll be special if he just keeps grinding.

The Matador (Chi-town)

Derrick Rose. Wow. I am more and more impressed with him every game. I wonder how good he can be, and how better he would look with some more competent teammates. TT played a good role last night, running around doing a little bit of everything. I want to see more of that.

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Rose was really impressive last night, made me rewind numerous times.

Stan Van Gundy (Orlando, FL)

My team isn't even shooting well, and we're 8-3. Are we scary, or do you agree with the rest of the ESPN analysts that this is the best we can be?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

I'm more bullish on Orlando than others, I guess.

Eric (New York, NY)

Thawp! Just looking at last night's PER rankings, 2008 Olympians Bosh, Gasol, Nowitzki, Bron, and Kobe all cracked the top 10; for the season we've got Bron, Wade, CP3, Howard, Boozer and Bosh in the top 10. Do you think these killer starts might motivate more players to sign up for their national teams in the future?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

No. The fun and success that the team enjoyed is motivation enough.

Shai (Israel)

What's with the Suns? One night they look like a great team and the next they look old and lost. Who are the real Suns, and who can we expect to see in the Playoffs?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Listen-training camp lasts less than a fortnight. It takes time to develop a new system.

Nasir, Philly

What is wrong with Mr. Invisible, Luol Deng?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

He had been playing much better, adapting to the new offense and playing great d. He got hurt before the game yesterday, so I'm not sure what will happen. But he'll figure it out.

Tarz (Philly)

What is wrong with Iguodala? Do you think now that he got paid he isn't playing as hard or is this more because of the new system with Brand?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

3 weeks does not make a season. Guys like Deng and Iggy, who don't have an offense revolving themselves, have to make severe adjustments and that takes time.

Paul (Portland)

What's your take on Oden's big game? Is his lack of coordination normal for someone his age and size or should it be a concern?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

It's normal for someone that big who hasn't played much. He's doing well.

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Spalding says hi to everyone.

Brian (Orlando, FL)

Tell me you've got to be excited about Florida Gator football. Can you believe how fast that team is? Chris Rainey, Jeffrey Demps, Percy Harvin, Brandon James...and then if you can somehow stop all of them out comes Tim Tebow. Who's gonna be able to stop them?

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

You must be mistaking me for my parents or brothers.

J McGee

What do I need to work on most to keep my spot when Haywood comes back?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

I'd suggest a little better shot selection, based on what I've seen. But just keep competing and you'll be a player.

Josh Meyer (Fort Dodge, IA)

How soon before Wittman is out in Minny?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Soon. Hmm, what "genius" picked him for coach of the year? That guy should be canned.

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

It was me, by the way.

Jimmy (Miami)

Mario Chalmers, one of the steals of the draft?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Maybe. Lots more to play.

Darrryl (Oakland, CA)

Do you think, as I do, that Brook Lopez will be on your top 5 rookies by the end of the year?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

I think it will be close. Rose, Mayo, Beas all get so many minutes. That leaves just 2 spots.

Jericho: (Camas, WA)

Did you see Oden last night? If he can put up 22 10, 2, 2 in 30 minutes while still somewhat awkward, out of shape and learning the game and his team. Where do you see his game being 3 yrs from now?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

If healthy for long periods of time, he could be the leagues best center not dunking with a cape on.

TD (The Bay, CA)

D-Thor, by far the best chatter on these boards, you acutally answer more than 15 questions in an hour... Now what do you think about the SJack extension and what can my Warriors hope to get for harrington?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Extension seems shaky to me. How old is Jackson?

Chris (Chicago)

I said before the draft that I would take Mayo #1. Was I right, or would you still lean towards Rose or Beasley?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Rose yesterday. Rose today. Rose tomorrow.

Elizabeth (Chicago, IL)

We'll forgive you for the Wittman prediction, as you also predicted the Bucks would only add Mbah a Moute to thier rotation if they wanted to lose...

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

Thanks. What is the Bucks record, by the way?

Scott (London, Ontario)

Sam Mitchell is the worst coach in the league, that is all.

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

I doubt it.

C (Charlotte)

Did you see DJ Augustin last night? He came off the bench and finished with 21 points on 9-15 shooting while the Bobcats starting five went 9-39 for 26 points. He seems to be getting more comfortable every game.

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

I saw the box. Will study him this week too.

John, Hanalei, HI

Dr. Thorpedo, Could Sergio Rodriquez be a top 10 point guard in the NBA someday?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Probably not.

Brett (Texas)

With all of the injuries the Spurs have, I think it is going to be a blessing in disguise down the stretch and into the playoffs. Your thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Good point. If they can stay competitive during this stretch.

gm goodrich

david, i workout many of the players in so. cal. including luc richard, jordan farmer & russell westbrook. i believe our drills along with the highlevel of play at ucla men's gym allows for easier acclimation on the next level (nba). noah & t thomas are essentially busts. bring'em out here and we'll try to salvage their career's.

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Their agents read my chats, so we'll see what happens!!

Mikey (Waukesha, WI)

It seems a tad unfair to point to Mbah a Moute's play as a reason for the Bucks record.

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

I'm not!! He's been terrific. But starting 2nd round draft picks who are not strong offensive players is not the recipe for winning games in November, typically.

Disappointed Movie Fan

"Excuse you?" What kind of quote is that? Throw us a bone, Thorpie!

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Thank you very little.

spencer (tempe, az)

Considering Dwight Howard hasn't improved his fundamentals enough for the Magic to run the offense through him, and one of Oden's upsides is supposed to be his ability as passer from the low post, can't you see him being better than Howard?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Sure. But I wouldn't expect it in 3 years.

Brian (Boston, MA)

Why do NBA reporters continue to harp on Lebron's potential departure from Cleveland TWO YEARS from now? The noise surrounding "2010" is--and will be, until then--nothing more than idle speculation. To be quite frank, it makes for terribly uninteresting (and usually misleading) sports reading.

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

Agreed.

Brian (Orlando, FL)

I read that Josh Powell was a graduate from your program. Could you educate me on him since I hardly see him play.

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

He was one of over a hundred pro's we've coached at one time or another. I had him when he was 20 years old and thought he was very very talented.

John, Hanalei, HI

If your were the owner of the Kings and Timberwolves, who would you hire as the coaches?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

I'd watch the Nets and see if L Frank became available. I'd pray that Orlando grew disenchanted with SVG(not bloody likely).

Cheese (Philly)

Come on - It's Caddyshack

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Not quite. Think "steak sandwich".

Objective Fan

Do former NBA players/analysts give more love to veterans when ranking players? There's just no way Paul Pierce or Kobe Bryant are anywhere close to LeBron James right now...

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Bryant is close. But James is better. Pierce is terrific, but not at either of those guys' level.

Freddy (Los Angeles)

Could Morrow potentially become as good as Michael Redd?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Hard to say after just 2 games. But I've argued for years that summer league can be a better guide than people relaize IF THE ROLES REMAIN THE SAME".

spencer (tempe, az)

Can you give us a little commentary on what you're seeing from Lebron this year? It's kind of ridiculous that were actually still seeing him coming out of his shell at this point, isn't it?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

Do you remember the line from "The Matrix" about there being a difference between knowing the path and walking it? Well, he's walking it.

andy (vegas)

sheeeeeeeesh, its FLETCH! I'll have a bloody mary and a steak sandwich.....and a steak sandwich. And charge it to the Underhills bill..... thoughts on AI/Chauncey trade 2 weeks in

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

Of course it's Fletch. I must have used that "excuse you" line a thousand times back in the 80's (which may explain my relatively few dates). Denver made a great move, as expected. Not sure yet on Detroit.

Nygu (Seoul, Korea)

Will Andrew Bynum be better career over Dwight Howard?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

Probably not. But he'll win a ton of games.

Bryan (Pasadena)

Quentin Richardson on the Celtics: "I'm just real curious to see what those guys will be saying if we weren't in a basketball league and didn't have referees." This killed me.

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Q told me last year that he was sick of Boston's talk.

Bill ( Dayton Oh )

The usage of the Matrix quote in your Lebron reference is inspiring.

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

if he starts stopping bullets we're all in for it.

Gavin (Chicago)

any thoughts on vinny d's coaching job thus far??

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

I'm very impressed that he's sticking with guys like Tyrus and Gray even when they struggle. He's been more patient and measured than a lot of other guys would.

Andrew (Maine)

I agree with you Pierce is not on the same level as Lebron and Kobe but I'd also argue that no one else is right now. However, is it fair to call Pierce a top 5 player in the league right now. He is as good as anybody at creating his own shot and exploiting match-up with his size and power and now that he's playing exceptional 1 on 1 defense he's become the total package. Do you agree? I'm curios as it's been interesting watching him develop as a player over the last 10 yrs in Boston.

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

I thought he looked like a top 5 player starting in game 7 against LeBron last year. But this year, not so much. But there is still so much ball to be played.

Jeff Miami

Torpedo, Is Beasley the second coming of Antoine Walker?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Not remotely.

Jameer Nelson (Orlando, FL)

I'm not playing too shabby lately am I Thorpe? Can I finally be the point guard that could take the Magic over the top?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

When you turn corners aggressively and take open jumpers, you can be a difference maker.

Can't get responded to (Everywhere)

Top 5 players right now are unquestionably Lebron, Kobe, Wade, Paul, Howard.

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Bron Wade CP3 Kobe Amare or Dwight

Pierre (Capital of California)

Hey thorpe, love the chats. Will Jason Thompson and/or Spencer Hawes be playing all star weekend (Rookie V. Soph)? THankx

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Looks that way, at least for JT. Hawes has a chance too.

joe (pueblo,colorado)

when will the denver nuggets get respect and start getting talked about one of the true powerhouses of the western conference?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

Perhaps soon. Good call.

Freddy (Los Angeles)

How good do you think George Hill can be and what does he need to improve in his game? Almost as good as Parker one day?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

He's no TP, but his defense and playmaking off the bench could be huge for them. They are dying for young energy off the bench.

Jeff (LLE Davie)

In ESPN's MVP award race, Paul Pierce was ranked ahead of Dwyane Wade. I have lost a lot of respect for some of these "expert" opinions...

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

It's about the records in MVP races.

Jeff, Miami

Jeff Miami: Torpedo, Is Beasley the second coming of Antoine Walker? David Thorpe: (12:45 PM ET ) Not remotely. Is that a complement to Beasley?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

12:50pm. David Thorpe: Yes!!!

Sean (Chicago)

I know people are excited about Rose (so am I) but I wish people would stop comparing him to Chris Paul. With the way he plays above the rim and rebounds I feel like he's a lot closer to Wade than Paul.

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

You would be right.

Aaron (LA)

Better book: Ulysses or Gravity's Rainbow?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

"The Adventures of Rattlesnake Ralph".

Andris (G-State)

I am an awesome rebounder aren't I? And I gently tip all the offensive ones back in.

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

You are terrific, and never stop fighting.

Jonathan (Los Angeles, Ca)

Love Chick Hearn's cameo in Fletch's dream sequence, "he's 6'4 with an afro 6'9"!! Classic! Thorpey, was the Lakers loss to Detroit indicative of their lack of a physical game, or just a one game loss??

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

One loss.

Jason (Orlando)

What can you tell me about Kenny Kadji? Any chance hes able to help the gators?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Very talented but very lazy.

julian Newman, Roseville Ca

Do you think Wade is better than Kobe?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

By a thin hair.

Joe (Elmira New York)

Tim Duncan Top 5 Best ever ?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Coach Moreau and I will be discussing him in context of the "Jordan, Magic, Bird, Kareem" club very soon.

Phil (DC)

"He's nowhere near the athlete Max was (Max and I went to college together), but probably a far better person." Quite a dig at Maxwell there. Any stories you care to share?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Google him and you'll see all.

Dan (Kitchener, ON)

What makes certain players play with a lack of energy? Can you change that? Why do some guys have a motor and others slack?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

I've helped players develop a motor before, and failed at it too. Every player is unique.

MC Welk (SLC)

What grade level is Rattlesnake Ralph? I have a precocious 7-year-old.

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

I have 2 of them. My son loves it.

John Cocktostyn (Laguna Beach)

David...I haven't seen you since the wedding. You look great! Knowing the Kings will only win in the future if they develop guys like Thompson, Hawes, and Brown, at what point should Theus start giving them the bulk of the minutes at their positions?

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

At the point he thinks his job is secure.

Jake (Bhosadi ki aulad, MA)

How and why is Bill Russell not in the super-elite Jordan, Magic, Bird, Kareem club?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

You have to shoot better than 45% from the field.

Dan (Kitchener, ON)

To follow up: Sorry, to bug ya, but how would you work on developing a motor?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

Practice habits need to be worked on. Lots of drills demanding high energy.

Carlos (El Salvador)

Saludos desde El Salvador para usted, Senor Thorpe. I know its 10 games into the season, but who gets your early vote for coach of the year (or month)?

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

Van Gundy.

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

Maybe Phil Jackson.

Gordon Liddy

Sorry I'm late to the chat. A menure spreader jackknifed on the Santa Ana. You should see my shoes....Anyway, do any teams have a need for guys like Brad Milelr and Beno Udrih, or are the Kings stuck with them until their contracts run out?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

I think Miller will be moved. Beno won't be for years.

Brian (Chicago, IL)

Is it safe to say that you don't appreciate defense as much as Scott Skiles?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Nobody does!! But I do a great deal.

Joe (Elmira New York)

is Popovich in the top 10 Coaches of all time?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Probably.

Paul Pierce

I'm shooting 41%. I'm no MVP. And that's the Truth!

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Great way to end this. Funny stuff. Thanks for the 1000+ questions. See you all next week. Be safe!
