Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

Dang, what happened to that warm Miami air I was so used to. It's chilly here in Charlotte. Enough of the weather report. What's on your mind?

Spencer Indy

David, what going to happen with the owner points of the 01 and 15? Will they go to the 36th and the 37th team (47, 10) or be sold to someone else?

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

I've been told they can be sold unless the entire operation is purchased and points are shuffled. Since the merger with Ganasai already has taken place, and Ganassi had two cars in the top 35, no shake up is necessary. So those numbers likely will disappear and the field adjusted to allow the next two in.

becka,va

what grade would you give reed sorenson this year

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

D-plus. The plus is for putting up with Ganassi. Just kidding. He's a nice man.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

David, I want to first thank you for doing these chats every week. My question is true that Yates will only run two cars next year and any idea who Kvapil's crew cheif will be?

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

Yates will field three cars, Kvapil, Gilliland and Menard. Menard and Larry Carter have been paired I believe. Haven't heard of a switch on Kvapil.

Jason (NY)

What has happened to the GEM cars during the 2nd half of the season? AJ's run ok, but the 9 and 19 have been pretty much out to lunch....

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

May be coincidental, but the performance began dipping once Ray Evernham stopped working on that side.

Eileen Harrisburg Il

Who do you see making the top 12 in the chase for 2009.

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

I've done this before, and I'll try to remain consistent. Ken Schrader, Joey Logano, Scott Speed, Kyle Petty, Michael Waltrip, Rusty Wallace, Richard Petty . . . not buying it, huh. How about Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin, Greg Biffle, David Ragan, Kurt Busch, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton and Jamie McMurray.

dave(durham nc)

riggs for 09..41 or ur best guess...if its to happen next year shouldnt they annoce soon since merchandise and all the goodies...thanks and just wondered where u thought hes going...i hope 41

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

I keep hearing the 41, but if it was that simple he'd probably be named already. He had a deal a while back but I've heard that fell through. Maybe Hall of Fame?

GLYNN (ATLANTA)

Hey David, With the EGR merger they now have 6 cars in the top 35 in owner points, and only going to field 4 cars, at the most. Will NASCAR allow them to sell these to the highest bidder, #33, #77, #10 or does NASCAR simply move the next 2 cars up into the top 35,(the 47 and 10)??

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

See below. Or above. Or however this thing works once I hit the send button. Already answered that.

Brian (FL)

Who wins rookie of the year on 2009? I'm betting on Speed...

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

That's a good bet. I'd say either him or Logano. Logano will have all the pressure, so maybe Speed slips through.

GLYNN (ATLANTA)

One other question. After seeing the way AJ drove the #10 (avg. finish 16.4), do you think GEM might be feeling like it pulled the trigger too soon on signing Reed?

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

I would be.

beck,va

what grade would you give nascar as a whole this year

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

A solid B. The races were better and they stayed true about not changing the cars to let the teams improve them. They had some of the most exciting finishes we've seen in recent years and all this with a sagging economy.

Eileen Ginger Harrisburg Il

Who do you think will be surprise driver of 2009?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

David Ragan. He'll make the Chase.

Jan (Philly)

Hi Dave, great job with the chats, Thanks!! Concerning the DEI-Ganassi merger and a fourth driver to be named, with veteran Mark Martin leaving and the testing ban, wouldn?t it make sense to put someone like Jeremy Mayfield in that car, an experienced driver with wins and poles, someone who has already successfully helped teams through transition phases, helping to build top ten, win contending teams at two different organizations?

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

It would make sense, but Jeremy has been out there all year and if that deal was going to get done wouldn't you think it would be done by now? Maybe owners still are wary of his past, but he might be worth a gamble to get you in the top 35.

devin michigan

will Chrissy Wallace bring girls back in to nascar

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

Last I heard females made up just less than half of the viewing population. There are plenty of them in the garage. If you're talking about behind the wheel, I'm confused by bring back. They've never really been there.

Andy (Toledo, OH)

David, any idea on which NASCAR drivers will be competing in the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January?

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

Pretty sure Johnson and Montoya again, but haven't heard anything definite. Trying to get past this season first.

Ed, Hartford Ct

What's your opinion on the "open wheelers" this year? Speed, AJ, Hornish etc. There is nowhere for a top level racer in this country to go anymore except NASCAR

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

What I think is they all could have used a year in the Nationwide Series preparing and were rushed into Cup.

Nick Rolando

Thanks I was just wondering because I heard on jayski that Yates might only run two teams next year.

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

Guess that's a possibility. Will check after the chat.

Nick Rolando

Also, David what do you think of the performance of McMurray? I think he makes the Chase next year.

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

He certainly finished strong, bu the's done that before. If he can find a way to be more consistent all year he'll definitely make it.

Juan (FL)

Which young driver do you see surprising us next year, a la David Ragan this year, Hornish, Speed or Almirola?

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

Speed, but i like Almorila as well. Joey, we all know what he can do.

lynn,va

is there any new news on reed's car in 09

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

If you are talking about his old car, the 41, nothing new. They're meeting this week to discuss all of that.

John (IND)

What are your thoughts on the 77? Can he make it at this level? As afan I was vbery disappointed. None of the penske cars were great, but I can't believe he missed the last race of the year.....

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

It's hard to judge Hornish when the 2 and 12 weren't good. If the other two cars were running well and he still barely made the top 35 then I'd be worried. He just needs seat time.

jim(durham nc)

jan philly are you serious...lol

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

Always.

Jan (Philly)

Ohhh Dave, don't let Patty Moise hear you say that

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

How old is Patty now? Not so old she can't recognize that there are no women drivers on the immediate horizon.

Mary (PA)

Is it time for NASCAR to give up its "official" sponsors and direct those companies towrds the teams that still need sponsorship $$$

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

Even if it were, it won't. In case you haven't noticed, NASCAR likes to make money.

lynn,va

meant the 10 car for reed

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

Not to sound like a smarty pants, but what sort of update. The last I looked the 10 was still the 10 and sposors are set. Nothing has changed.

Tom, Boston

Hate to say it, but Carl not winning either championship may not be such a bad thing. Like Jimmie this year, Carl will make history next year by winning both championships & beating Kyle's win total this year. Is this a true statement in your mind?

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

Can't see him winning both series. A lot has to happen right for that to occur. Getting to 21 wins also would be difficult. Remember, Kyle also drove some trucks. But what Carl did was truly spectacular. On most seasons he would be the champion.

Ryan (Alabaster,Alabama)

Hi how r you today? My question is simple...do you think Auburn has a legitimate chance to beat the #1 ranked Alabama?

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

Auburn will kill the Tide. Won't be close. Bama is looking ahead to the SEC title game against Florida, which it also will lose. Bama may be the most overrated No. 1 team in the history of college football. Just kidding. My fiance is a Bama fan graduate [if there is such a thing] and I have to keep her in line. I actually think the Tide will beat Auburn before losing to Florida.

Mike (FL)

The points system is terrible. A driver can be a great most of the year, have a couple bad races and be out of it.

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

He also can be out of it by having bad races under the old system. The system is better than the old one. Just appreciate how remarkable JJ's season was. And Carl had a great year as well, but he wasn't leading after 26 races and he wasn't leading after 36. Case closed.

Paul from Joisey

Pit Box Selection: During qualifying, the announcers always talk up pit selection, but then you never get the facts. Aside from getting the first box, or some other box that has free room in front of it, what else is there? I'd be interested in seeing the full run down- each pick in order and where they picked.

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

That would be a good story for next season. I'll work on it just for you.

Jack Yuba City, Ca.

Where would David Ragan have finished had he made the chase? He put in some good finishes in the final 10 races.

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

Not sure, but he would have finished 13th under the old system just as he did the new one overall.

Pete, Cincy, OH

Will Patrick Carpentier get a ride in Nationwide or the Truck series? I think he's a class guy and I'd love to see him get a chance to prove himself. Agree?

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

Agree. I thought he might make a run for rookie of the year at one point.

Dave, Pa.

This is a stretch, but do you believe this biggest icon for the true blue coller NASCAR fan-WalMart--will make a splash into NASCAR in either a sponsorship or team ownership role? Like I said, what fan of NASCAR racing hasn't shopped at a WalMart.

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

Good point. But have heard nothing to make me believe that is happning.

Jan (Philly)

hey Jim, Durham, as serious about my driver as you are about yours.

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

You to settle this behind the barn.

Felipe (Dallas)

Hey David, what grade do you JPM this year and what do you see him doing next year. It seems Chevy and Truex Jr will be a big improvement for him to work with.

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

I'd give him an A. He hit A Chevy, A Dodge, A Ford and A Toyota mulitple times. Not sure anybody else can say that. As for next year, the DEI equipment wasn't bad. I'd look for him to improve for sure.

Bill France (Here)

That's a black flag against Jan (Philly) for trying to pick a fight.

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

Nice to hear from you Mr. France. Exactly where is here? Up or down?

Tyler (Lexington)

How about divsion 3 UW Platteville in their huge upset over a d1 team - Bradley!!

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

I'm all about Wofford getting a second chance at Appalachian State in the Division I-AA playoffs. The three-time champs got lucky with their 40-something point victory on Halloween night.

Bill (AZ)

I agree with Mike. More emphais should be placed on wins and places. Who cares how many laps you lead or who is on the pole. The object is to win the race, right?

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

They did put more emphasis on winning this year. And I disagree on nobody caring about leading laps. The drivers do and if you can't lead laps, just ask Jeff Gordon, you can't win races.

Mary (PA)

this seemed to be the year of the open wheeler experiment. Was it a success or failure?

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

You'd have to say failure. As I said earlier, they were rushed in.

jim durham

i like mayfield to dont get me worng...hes basically like riggs..been dealt a few bad hands aas far as owners and situations involved...im not knocking him..was jus a joke since nascer is in the pretty boy era

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

Hey, are you saying they weren't in the pretty boy era when Jimmy Spencer was in his prime?

Joe (Boston)

Any idea where Todd Parrot's heading?

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

Not yet. Sorry.

Tom, Boston

Do you see trouble brewing at Roush Fenway Racing? Both Matt & Greg seemed pretty pissed that their teammate can go 7 extra laps on a tank of fuel even though everyone should be equal. Seems there's a bit of jealousy going there considering Matt is going into the final year of his contract.

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

If they want better fuel mileage, talk to their crew chiefs and get more out of the car. What Carl did, however he did it, was impressive. Is there jealously. Probably some, but not over fuel mileage.

Paul from Joisey

I heard a rumor that Carpentier might drive in the truck series next year. You hoid that one?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

Would be a good experience for him. The trucks are closer to the COTs than the Nationwide cars in handling.

lynn,va

what are the sponsors then

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

It's been a while. What is this pertaining to?

Jan (Philly)

If the automakers don't get a federal bailout, what do you think are the odds that NASCAR will have to look more seriously into franchising?

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

NASCAR has survived without the manufacturer support before and could do so again. I just don't see franchising happening. Too many loops to jump through.

Jan (Philly)

Good point Jim. Jeremy and Scott are both good looking MEN, not pretty boys

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

No comment on that one.

jim durham

now thats funny david..been watichin spencer on the raceday shows...hes the biggest nascar pet if ive evers seen one...of coarse hes the BIG ole special one that likes to differ...hes jus has no content on what he broadcast...i like you guys beeter than him any day

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Thanks. And my hair is real, thank you.

Jan (Philly)

Can you throw a black flag from the hereafter Mr. France? If so, please black flag your own organization for their disregard of the fans.

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

I'll let that stand as your commentary for today.

Carl (AL)

I know cutting out testing will save money but dont youthink that it will hurt the small teams when it comes to information on race weekend?

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

It'll definitely hurt teams outside the top 35. They'll have to spend all day Friday on a qualifying setup and will have little time to find the right race setup on Saturday.

lynn,va

reeds's # 10 car

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

How could I forget. That would be Air Force.

adam, ny

Does ESPN plan on doing any specials next year for the people that truly make NASCAR happen..the people back at the shop? May I also include the transporter drivers in this. Without body hangers, engine people, marketing people, etc., every one of these drivers would be nothing.

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

I would suspect somewhere during the course of the year there would be that sort of story. I've done several over the past season.

Paul from Joisey

Waht are the chances that the 24 team makes a change atop the pit box?

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

Not much. Jeff and Mr. Hendrick both came out in support of Letarte this season. The problem was the crew chief. The problem was Gordon not getting a good feel for the car. But he did improve down the stretch and I suspect he'll make a run next year.

Smitty

I just read your article about Junior. I don't think you like him very much. I read all the comments people made about the article and you sure bring out the Junior haters.

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

I have absolutely nothing against Junior. He's a nice guy, one of the more polite drivers in the garage and always ready to answer your questions truthful. Not sure why the Junior haters came out. Maybe the Junior fans are taking a break as Junior is.

Mike, Ny

How has NASCAR got so technical? Hard to believe that some engineering major at MIT with aspirations of working for a fortune 500 company may one day be sitting in a garage stall in darlington figuring out a fluid dynamics chart on one of these space ships called the car of tomorrow.

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

I suppose you don't like HD television or power steering on your car or drive-through windows, either. Things change. So did NASCAR.

Jan (Philly)

Speaking of the top 35 rule, do you think NASCAR will eliminate it if the fields become smaller due to the economy?

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

I doubt it. There will be 43 cars, even if a few of them are field fillers.

Joey (FL)

Will GEM move to Toyota as speculated?

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

That's a move I believe would have happened by now if it were going to. From what I understand, GEM still has a year or so left on its deal with Dodge.

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

Well, that does it for me this week. Enjoy the offseason. I will.
