Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings from Las Vegas, Fight Freaks. It's a bit early here, but I am ready to chat. Big fight this weekend with Hatton-Malignaggi on HBO and don't forget about the excellent Molitor-Caballero unification match on Showtime tonight. I need to find a place here to wacth that one. Keep an eye out for the big notebook and make sure to check out yesterday's blog and new p4p rankings. Let's get to it.

Matt (Washington, DC)

Alright, Dan, usually we start off chats like this with your picks for the weekend's fights, but first things first: will Ricky Fatman make weight today?

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Yes, I believe Ricky will make weight. I spoke to a couple of people in his camp yesterday and they said he was about three pounds over yesterday, which is normal for him.

Tomas(Texas)

Jermain Taylor looked impressive against Jeff Lacy, though I think he could have taken him out if he wanted to. You think he might have held back some?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

I don't think he held back. I think Jeff showed enormous nuts and guts to make it to the final bell.

Greg(Los Angeles)

Dan how did Allan Green look last weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

A little rusty but he hadn't fought since January. But he crushed Carl Daniels, who is at this point nothing more than a living heavy bag. He needs to retire.

Ty (Detroit, MI)

Dan, what's the deal with Margarito? I have to say it's extremely disappointing he is not fighting Mosley. A classic case of someone saying all the right things and then getting to the top and becoming a hypocrite.

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

That is the view many of you seem to have today and it's hard to argue. He said Mosley would never fight him yet Mosley took the fight in 10 seconds and Margarito suddenly went quiet. What does that say?

rob (jersey)

Do you think that FM Sr. will have Hatton fighting more of a defensive fight - and shouldn't that benefit Paulie?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Mayweather says he is not going to turn Hatton into a defensive fighter but rather a smarter fighter, which means moving his head, establishing his jab and not getting as much. We shall see if it works.

Ty (Detroit, MI)

Dan, I agree the Kessler-Taylor is the fight I'd like to see, and it makes alot of sense in determining where that division goes in light of Calzaghe vacating and retiring.

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Unfortunately, it is unlikely because it's not a big money fight.

Jeff (alabama)

Freddie told us in the chat yesterday that Manny's gonna ko Oscar in the 9th. What do you think about it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I think Freddie has been really confident since the fight was thought of.

Chris (Los Angeles CA)

D$ - I've heard rumors now that the Duddy-Hearns fight is now in jeopardy due to Duddy's promotional problems. Is he risking blow any chance of being a contending fighter?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

It's in big jeopardy. DiBella, who is here and putting on that show, was working last night to save the fight.

Chick Walker

Are you as excited as I am about Riddick Bowe's return!

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Riddick Bowe should not be fighting, simple as that.

Rudy Hernandez (Miramar, Florida)

I saw that Glen Johnson sent a letter to Calzaghe on your blog. Do we know if there was any response from the Calzaghe camp?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Nothing that I know of and I spoke with Joe's attorney yesterday. Joe is taking some time off and going to spend the holidays with his family. I doubt we will hear anything specific about Joe's plans before the end of the year.

Greg(Los Angeles)

Dan did Dibella say anything about Quartey not fighting now? I see he is off the schedule.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Yes, I have it in my notebook today He pulled out for what DiBella said were personal reasons but that he intends to fight early next year, which I will believe when I see.

Isaiah (Detroit)

Doesn't this whole scenario with Margs make you feel for Shane? The clock is ticking on his career and he has given us so many thrills as fans and it seems all he wants to do is fight the best before he calls it a career. Between Judah's injury and Margs backing out I fear we will never see him in another big fight before it's all said and done.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

It's certainly possible.

Benvenuto (Miami)

Dan....hope you and the wife are well. I am curious what the story is in Vegas about Paulies hands....any problems in his camp?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Paulie has had ba hands forever, especially his right, which has had multiple operations. He broke it again vs. N'Dou. He says it's ok for the fight, but it will always give him trouble. However, he has learned how to live and deal with it.

Joe (Staten Island, NY)

Hey Dan, long time reader, first time comment. Win or lose for Pacquiao, where do you see him ending up? I don't want to see a RJJ situation where he ruins his career by coming back down, any chance he stays around 140?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

I think win or lose against Oscar he'll probably go to 140ish, but I'd be surprised if he went all the way back to lightweight.

Aaron (Dighton, MA)

do you see any possibility of Oscar fighting Calzaghe next year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Do you see any possibility of removing your head from the bag of glue next year?

Angel, Carson City

Dan, I watched the Dimitrenko fight and despite the sweet body shot he ko'd Krasniqi with, he looked average at best. He would get demolished by any of the top 10 heavy's on your list.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

I saw the fight too and he looked pretty ordinary other than his size. It was a great shot though. He also looked a little soft and I think he was at his heaviest weight.

Don (Manchester UK)

People are saying that Paulie got a tough chin because Cotto couldn't stop him, I just have a feeling he's going down with a Hatton body shit ala Castillo. What you think Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

I think if Ricky is going to put him on his butt, the body will probably do it more than the head.

John in Las Vegas, NV

Hi Dan.. Is the weigh in open to the public and if it is what time will it begin.... Thank you..

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Yes, it is open and in the arena. I believe they are on the scales at 2:30 PT.

Luke Danbury, CT

D$$ how did the Delvin Rodriguez/Isaac H fight play out? Both with the fight, if you saw it, and the scoring.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

I watched it on the Internet and I thought Hlatshwayo deserved a close victory. But it was a pretty good fight and I wouldn't mind see a rematch, this time hopefully on US TV.

Matt (Washington, DC)

If Taylor-Kessler is not a big money fight, is there anything we can realistically hope will get Kessler back to fighting legitimate opponents on HBO rather than stiffs in Europe?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

I really don't know what will be of him in the US.

Jay - Webster, MA

Hi Dan, I'm convinced that Roy in his prime would have handled Calzaghe convincingly. I watched his past fights and knockouts on YouTube. Any comments??

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

I do think Roy would have won in his prime. But they didn't fight then so we will never know.

Walter (Albuquerque, NM)

Ego - Anyone that thinks their P4P list is important enough they need to charge people to see it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Listen to me and listen closely: Do you think that is my decision? It isn't. I would love for everyone to have them for free, but that is above my pay grade. That's life. Deal with it.

Jonesy (NC)

What is your official prediction on the two fights Saturday?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I like Paulie becision and Kirkland by a knockout.

Ramos CA

Hey Walter, you're a stooge...

yorkis (philly)

Still can't get over Mtagwa-Villa! What a fight! Soleo Boxeo will be missed.

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Sick fight and I will always find great irony that one of the best fight in Telefutura history came literally on the day the network canceled Solo Boxeo.

Andrew (Toronto)

Rumble at Rama! Prediction?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Really torn on this one. I'll take Molitor via decision.

Benvenuto (Miami)

For us in the US, we have never got to see Molitor televised. Other than him being a southpaw, and having a decent rep in the UK and Canada, what else do we know? How will he react being in there with such a physical freak like Caballero?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I have seen a ton of Molitor fights. He has underrated power and really good skills. He'll be faster than Caballero also. He needs to make Caballero "fight small" and not use his reach and height.

Dan (Brooklyn, NY)

Do you like the idea of Mosley fighting Berto? Is it too much too soon for Andre?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Personally, I do think it's too soon for Berto. That said, that fight is by no means a done deal. There are huge problems with it and there's a good chance it won't happen from what DiBella was telling me last night. King won't allow Berto to skip past Collazo and wants Berto to give up his belt if he takes the Mosley fight. berto and his team don't want to do that. They also aren't making a ton of money for the Mosley fight so the risk may be too high considering the reward. There are problems. HBO is putting the pressure on to make the fight but I am a little skeptical at the moment.

Steve (Warwick, RI)

Dan, what does the undercard look like for holt-torres 3?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Someone needs to check the freaking fight schedule or be banned.

Martin, Dundee, Scotland

Hey DTM... I noticed you didn't have David Haye in your top 10 after his stoppage of Monte Barrett. Really? You rate Chris Arreola above Haye?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Umm, yes. Why would a knockout of Monte Barrett mean you should be in the top 10, especially when you were rocked repeatedly and knocked down (which was not counted)? Haye needs more work at heavyweight to be ranked.

Paul (Carlsbad, CA)

Is there going to be a fourth tv fight for the DLH-Manny fight or only three?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

There will be a fourth. I encourage you to read today's notebook for some details.

Isaiah (Detroit)

What's next for Mijares? I still can't get over how stupidly he fought Vic. He still may have lost anyway but certainly didn't make it easy on himself.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Like a fight next year with Anselmo Moreno for a bantamweight title.

Tom (Danbury,CT)

Maybe Steve from Warwick saw Yuri Foreman on the undercard and instantly fell asleep.

Jack

Dan, Roy Jones Jr has made it clear that he will fight on. Do you have any idea who he'll fight next? Is there any chance at all that he'll fight Bernard or Calzaghe again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Who has Roy made it clear to? He hasn't said.

Paul (Carlsbad, CA)

Notebooks up!

Tony(Tampa)

Dan, Josh Clottey's schedule looks open. If Mosley's deal with Berto falls through could Clottey get in the picture?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

I would love to see that fight if the others fall through but I am not sure HBO wants to do that one for whatever reason.

Matt (Washington, DC)

I've heard very little buzz but personally feel Kirkland-Vera is must-see. Thoughts on that fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Someone's getting knocked out.

Greg(Los Angeles)

Never thought Angulo-Mayorga would get done but nice job by the promoters. That will be a brawl. Is Campbell going to resign with King?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

It's not done just yet but looks good. Nate and King have some issues to work out but from what I understand he would be willing to re-sign with King but only under certain conditions.

Angry Boxing Fan

How in the world does HBO and Showtime pass on a split Pavlik Cotto card?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Probably didn't like the matchups, which aren't the best. Or they didn't want them at the price asked for. I can't argue with them.

Jose M La Habra CA

Dan say it aint so, Vasques v marquez 4 is off?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

It's so.

Brock (Belleville, IL)

Walter, after his decision to charge people to view his P4P list, Dan has gotten the rights to put DLH-Pacman on ESPN. He is in charge of those things right?

Ryan (Cleveland)

I am surprised that there is not an overwhelming outrage that Bowe is fighting. If I had tickets I would demand a refund.

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

A lot of people in the US either don't know or don't care.

Joe: San Francisco, CA

So, no Margarito. Possibly no Mosley-Berto. No Hearns-Duddy. What exactly do we have to look forward to in the first quarter of next year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Duddy-Hearns is still alive but in trouble, but let's be optimistic. We may have Angulo-Mayorga, which will be sensational and Campbell-Funeka, which could be a sleeper. We are also close to getting Darchinyan-Arce. All is not lost, but I agree that the start of '09 looks a little weak.

Eric (PA)

In your notebook, Hatton said "He reminded me there are two Ricky Hattons." I guess that puts that debate to rest now.

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Exactly. I laughed when I heard him say that.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

His fans here, however, continue to sing that there is only one Ricky Hatton.

Rob (NYC)

About Margarito again, he turns down Mosely because $2 mil aint enough, but turns down Williams for $4 mil - does he even know what he wants?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

I have no idea.

Chris (Kalamazoo, MI)

I can't wait to see Mayorga get beheaded if the fight with Angulo gets made.

Paul (Carlsbad, CA)

why would HBO be lukewarm to Vazquez-Marquez 4?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

The view is that the fourth fight should be on Showtime. It is Showtime's franchise fight and HBO isn't interested in Showtime's quote-unquote leftovers, especially at the price be asked. I can't blame them. Certainly fights belong to a network so to speak. Gatti-Ward and Barrera-Morales are HBO branded fights. Vazquez-Marquez and Corrales-Castillo fights are Showtime's. You feel me?

Winky Wright

I think Margarito is a great businessman. Y'all just don't understand.

Patrick (Mexico)

Hi Dan, I live one town over from Mijares, and one thing he did that seems incredibly questionable was run a 10k race on the sunday before the fight. Maybe he didnt run the whole thing, but the newspaper treats as though he did, and I know a lot of people who saw him running, and it certainly seemed like his legs were not moving him to well. No excuses, he may have lost anyway, but it would explain the horrible performance.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

I hadn't heard that but that might answer some questions. If he did do that, probably not the smartest thing.

Dominic (San Francisco)

Dan! I'm baffled that Margarito passed on the fight with Mosley, but I have to agree that he deserved better than 50-50... was there any room for negotiations with money for that fight or was $2 million the final offer?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

I think had they pressed the issue, Margarito and his team could have gotten more, but from what I understand Margarito and his managers never did really press the issue.

Keith H (Seattle, WA)

Dan, Who do you like on Sunday, Jericho or Cena? My hopes are on Y2J.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I think Cena takes the title back in front of his hometown fans. My flight should get me home Sunday night just in time to watch the PPV. If not, I will catch the late-night replay.

Brian (DC)

If Mosley-Berto falls thru, any chance that Zab steps in as an opponent for either guy?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

LOL. Virtually zero.

Allan Green (Tulsa, OK)

Antonio Margarito has my full support

Daniel (SF)

With Vasquez-Marquez 4 off, is there any chance one of them fights tonight's winner? I also wouldn't mind seeing either of them fight Jhonny Gonzales. The first Vasquez-Gonzales fight was a war.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Nobody is sure when Vazquez will be back because of the retina injury but both he and Marquez could figure for the winner of Molitor-Caballero. Either vs. Gonzalez would also be tremendous.

Kyle (Indianapolis)

If you were Jermaine Taylor's manager would you pursue a Light Heavy fight with Dawson or Calzaghe, or stay at Super Middle and dominate the division? The bigger fights are at 175, but JT has the potential to dominate 168!

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

As a manager I would try to fight Calzaghe, which is, by far, the most money.

Vic Darchinyan (Armenia)

I will fight Marquez or Vasquez

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

I heard you would also fight Klitschko (either of them).

Tom (Danbury,CT)

How many of the British fans are drunk already?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

There are Brits here but it is a MUCH lighter turnout than for Mayweather. Economy is rough all over. The buzz has been very disappointing here.

Tim (Cincy)

Any word if Evander will be chartering a few jets to transport all of his kids to Switzerland to see his fight? That'd be a nice Christmas present.

David (NY, NY)

Who has a better shot at the upset Rahman (over Wlad) or Holyfield (over Valuev)? The vegas odds on the fights are identical.

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Rahman. I give Holyfield zero chance.

corey from(WestWick)

I gotta admit how upset I'm to hear Margarito won't be fighting Mosley. And the fact that he might sit out into the summer makes it worse.I don't think the 50/50 split between him and Shane was fare but still. Also the last time he took a long layoff he struggled against Clottey took another long layoff and lost to Williams.

Steven (Hartford)

Any update on whats next for Bad Chad Dawson next?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Nothing at the moment. His promoter Gary Shaw is looking around.

bill (pgh)

any talk of where/when Meza-Clay vs. Solis will take place.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

TBA. The only thing for sure is that Top Rank won the purse bid and has a deadline to put the fight on.

Benvenuto (Miami)

Any early predictions from you on Darchinyan-Arce......other than it will be war.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

It will be a war but I like Darchinyan via knockout in that one. I think Arce is a little past it at this point and Vic is so aggressive.

Rick, Marina, Ca

What you think of the 1st installment of 24/7 of DLH vs Pacman ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

I really enjoyed it.

Rog (Sacramento)

DTM, do you think Margs is holding out for a mega payday with Oscar?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Even if he is, that fight is way way way way off. Meantime, he'll never make up that lost January payday.

Todd (Florence, SC)

Dan--If the Berto fight falls through, any chance Mosley fights Williams (assuming he beats Phillips next week)? There are not a whole lot of other quality opponents out there.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

That would be an excellent fight. If Mosley-Berto doesn't get made and Paul wins next week, we may hear about that possibility.

Luke Danbury, CT

Bad Chad - Jermain Taylor sounds good to me! Pull some strings, Dan!

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Excellent fight.

Jon (FL)

Will Showtime televise an undercard fight before Molitor-Caballero tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

No.

Juan Mannuel Marquez

hey dan, why did my ppv do only 10,000 buys? is that a typo on your part.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Yes, a typo that should be fixed. It was supposed to be 100,000.

Mermel (NYC)

What is the longest chat you have ever done?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

I think once we went almost five hours.

Tom (Danbury,CT)

Obviously he's no Ricky, but is Matthew Hatton at least an entertaining fighter to watch?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Matthew is somewhat entertaining but really not all that talented.

Chris (Greensboro, NC)

Is Dan Birmingham training anyone of note currently besides Winky?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Dan is a terrific trainer and just took on promising Russian Olympian Matvey Korobov, who is signed with Top Rank.

Rick, Marina, Ca

Any news on Amber Mares ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Abner is out the rest of the year at least recovering from an eye injury.

Darian (Phoenix)

Do you think tomorrow is pretty much the pinacle for Paulie as far as a big money fight even if he wins? I don't see fights with Bradley, Holt, Torres, or even Judah being as lucrative as this Hatton fight.

Joe, RI

Could there be a B-Hop/Pavlik 2? Hopkins has no one to fight, and Pavlik can't do any worse in the rematch...Maybe with a real trainor Pavlik will be more competitive.

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

If Paulie wins it is not out of the question that he could someday fight either Oscar or Pacquiao.

Eric (Napoleon Ohio)

Iron Dan...I'm a huge DLH fan. I am really excited about DLH-Pacman. I don't want to get too ahead of myself but if DLH and Hatton both win, I'm just not that stoked about that fight next year. Is there something wrong with me? Or can you empathize?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

If they both win, I think Oscar vs. Hatton is a lock to happen.

Seattle, WA

Is Calzaghe really as good as his hype? He's only had two fights in the U.S., one of which was a very controversial decision.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Yes, he's really good. So what if he fought only twice here? I have seen probably 30 of Joe's fights. Dude is good.

bill (pgh)

what's next for Juan Diaz?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

TBA.

Peter Manfredo Jr (Providence)

Should I just retire?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Probably, unless you want to keep getting knocked out.

Joel Julio

54 minutes and no mention of...

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Joel (NY)

Dan, would Bob Arum have to give both audiences a full fight card if he did the split site Top Rank PPV in Feruary?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Both arenas would have full cards but only some of the fights would be on PPV.

Michael Grant

Do you care that I won last weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

No.

Luke (Montreal)

Can we eventually expect Lucian Bute to face Kessler or Pavlik?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

I don't think so but you just reminded me of something else DiBella mentioned to me last night -- he's been in touch with Bute's people to see about maybe making Bute-Taylor, which is a tremendous fight.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Dan, can you use your influence and help make a Bika Andrade fight? I can't get that one out of my mind after last week's chat!

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

It has come up among the promoters and is a guaranteed war.

Greg(Los Angeles)

Any possibility of Santos-Margarito? I am suprised King has not pushed for this.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

They fought twice, neither was very good. And Margarito has much bigger fish to fry.

rob (jersey)

The upstair theater at boardwalk hall doesn;t look like there's a bad seat in the house - and are tickets still available?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

It's a terrific venue and yes, tix are still available as far as I know.

Enrique Carlsbad, CA

Dan, Now that Margarito bowed out of a fight with Mosley do you think we see the Cotto rematch sooner? If so does Cotto have a chance to win?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

The earliest the rematch will happen is June unless Arum pulls a total change and decides to make it in February.

Joel (NY)

Dan, How do you feel about the Cotto/Pavlik split site, it does sound weird

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

It's unusualy but I am not convinced Arum will actually pull it off. Sounds like a Macau card to me.

bill (pgh)

humor me if this is a stupid question, but would the Pavlik/Cotto doubleheader be out of Versus price range?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Yes. Cotto and Pavlik would make at least $1 million apiece, way above the license fee Versus pays.

David (NY, NY)

Request: Anyone that asks if top notch fighters like Cotto have a "chance to win" any fight, they get banned.

Tom (Danbury,CT)

Is Vladimir Kozlov the WWE's version of a crappy WBO mandatory contender?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

YES! Classic.

Charles (Philly)

I have heard two interpretations since last weekend: (1) Calzaghe exposed Lacey; or (2) Lacey was never the same since Calzaghe. DTM, do you subscribe to either view?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

I subscribe more to No. 2.

Armando (Nj)

Dan - why are people saying that Jaidon C should retire? He's 24 years old - so he looked a bit lethargic in his last fight - that doesnt mean he's washed up - aside from his 2 brutal fights with Green and Bika, i don't think that is enough to have caused substantial damage to this kid? He was a great amateur and has good skills - he's still a baby....your thoughts sir?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Unfortunately, Jaidon is done. Age is not important, He does not react well and his handlers and family want him to quit. He knows he should quit also.

Eric (Columbus, OH)

Ugh, Macau. I want to go to Youngstown for Kelly's middleweight comeback and my first live card ever. C'mon Bobfather, make it so!

Frank (Chicago, IL)

How many buys would Arum need to break even on a Cotto/Pavlik PPV? Those two will get paid well. Seems like Arum could easily lose money on that show.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

He probably needs to do at least 75,000 to 100,000 buys on a show like that and given the economy and matchups, he could be at serious risk of falling short.

David (houston)

Bute vs Taylor would be sweet!!! I had not thought of that yet. A new belt for Taylor woo hoo

Paulie Malignaggi

Dan, do you have any hair gel I can borrow?

Sal (Chicago)

On the 24/7 Oscar said that Freddie "had the wrong gameplan." That may not be the case, but i do know that from 9th round on Freddie NEVER stressed the jab. How much credit does Freddie get for the loss in your opinion?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Oscar is notorious for throwing his trainers under the bus. Oscar has been a professional for a long time and he knows he has to jab. He didn't. He lost. His fault, not Freddie's.

Jason (Burbank, CA)

Dan, I keep hearing about this welterweight Vanes "The Nightmare" Martirosyan. Is he good and does he have a shot of fighting anyone of note in the future?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Vanes is an outstanding prospect at junior middle. He was on the 2004 US Olympic team and very young. He is being moved exceptionally well by Top Rank and manager Shelly Finkel and I think he'll be making noise at 154 in the next couple of years.

Chris (Greensboro, NC)

Ben Tackie is still fighting?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Unfortunately. And I will have to sit through it tomorrow.

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

This just in from my Spanish to English dictionary: Margarito is Spanish for Winky!

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Brilliant.

Chino, Fayetteville

Can Shaw and Arum put aside their differences and make Arce - Darchinyan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

I think they may be able to, especailly since the fight is being done between Shaw and Todd duBoef, who is second in charge at Top Rank.

Don

Imagine a contract negotiation between Winky and Margs....that would be entertaining TV

Nick (NYC)

Dan - just watched the Corrales/Castillo I fight for the 3,000th time and i just have to say how impressed i was with Goosen in Diego's corner that night - he was very cool, calm and collected, gave great advice - granted he had a hell of a figher, but i think he deserves credit for a great corner job on that night.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Joe did do a great job and I have always thought he was a very underrated trainer.

Jose M La Habra CA

Dan, the people in my office just cant understand why there's no chance in hell that i'll be attending the company Christmas party on december 6.

bill (pgh)

please tell me i read the schedule wrong and that Brewster is not fighting Bruce Seldon.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I wish I could.

Kris (NYC, NY)

Dawson vs. Pavlik in 2009. Buy or Sell?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Sell.

Ryan (Albany, NY)

Would Wlad and Vitali ever co-headline a card? I'd think that would draw a huge crowd at an outdoor stadium in Germany.

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

They won't because each commands huge TV money and huge live gates on their own, so there is no reason to put them together and make only half the money.

Handy, North Dakota

Dan, how do you think Angulo would do in a shot against Santos?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Tough fight but if he can beat Mayorga at least he will have done something notable to be discussed as a title challenger.

bill (pgh)

Any word on an undercard bout for Winky's 12/4 fight on Versus?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Right now it's going to be Daniel Jacobs but Jacobs could move to Dec. 6.

David, Calgary

Have you heard anything about Bejing gold medalist James De Gale turning pro?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

I was just talking to one of my British reporter friends last night and asked him about DeGale. He said DeGale was "80 percent" he was going to turn pro and was talking to promoters.

Tom (Danbury,CT)

Was the Cintron fight really as bad as you described it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Yes.

Alec (Nashville)

I had Swamp Donkey winning a close fight before he was stopped. You?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Swamp Donkey. No, he wasn't winning against Witherspoon when the fight was stopped. It was a great fight but even the Donk admitted he was not winning after the fight when I spoke to him. What a great guy. DiBella, who doesn't even promote him, was wearing a Swamp Donkey T-shirt last night. I want to see more of the Donk.

Frankie, Ocala

Hi Dan, do you think Sturm v. Abraham has decent chance of happening next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Abraham has offered the fight, so we will see. I sort of tend to doubt it but I hope it happens. It's a big, big fight in Germany.

Dan (LA)

Please help a freak sell his wife on watching the Hatton - Malinaggi fight. My pitch of "they're small, have no power, and are both banged up and probably on the downside of their career" hasn't worked. Nor has singing "there's only ONE..." several thousand times.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Then I would say you are SOL.

d-houston

What kind of crowd are they expecting tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

It could be weak. I think they'll be lucky to have 10,000.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)

D$$$ can we nominate Fernando Guerrero KO's for honorary mention KO of the year? For those who didn't see it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqSmO3xmFjM

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Tremendous knockout. I was there at ringside and impressed.

Joe, IN

Did I see somehwere that Oscar is thinking about going to 140...? Could have swore I saw that.

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

He said it on his teleconference the other day that I was on but he wasn't serious.

Larry (Houston, TX)

Hasn't Margarito bascially turned into Floyd Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

I guess, except for the skill.

Eric (Fayetteville, AR)

Do you think Jeff Lacy can come back if he takes a year off to heal? He just never has seemed to come back from that shoulder injury.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

The shoulder was not why he lost. Jeff insisted the shoulder was fine and has been fine for the past couple of fights.

Paul B (NY, NY)

"Arce is going to be my human pinata." Darchinyan has to be the best smack talker in boxing. Who else do you nominate?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

He's up there but so are guys like Rahman, Hopkins, Miranda, Mayorga and Toney.

Paul (NYC)

Is there any chance Margarito knows something we don't know, namely that F**** M********* is thinking about fighting him..

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Margarito wishes.

The Donk (in the swamp)

D-Nizzle, glad to see your support of the Donk! I think you should name your next cat after me.

Banishment

I'm getting hungry!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

I'm not surprised -- the weigh in is soon and you have to make weight.

Kevin

It must be asked...on a scale of 1-10, where do you score the Lennox Lewis comeback chances with 10 being "absolutely returning to the ring"?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Definitely about a 4.

Tim (Denver)

Danno! whats your thoughts on the Kirkland v Vera. Kirkland is an animal but Vera can take a punch and dish one out too, he's a top notch club fighter.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

I'm really looking forward to it and for action, it could be a lot better than the main event. Kirkland is so aggressive and Vera is also. Should be fun while it lasts.

Tom (Danbury,CT)

Can we all request the Swamp Donkey on FNF this season?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Duly noted.

John, (Grand Rapids, Mi)

Who's hungrier Banishment or Hatton?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Hatton.

julian nyc

Has margarito lost respect from you, he has turned down a total of 6 million to fight williams and shane mosley? it seems like he thinks does fights are riskier to take than a cotto fight... no direspect to cotto

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

I have the utmost respect for him as a fighter but he and his managers might need a little business lesson and a little wake-up call on the economy.

rob (jersey)

No Showtime in the room Dan-o?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Unfortunately, no. Rarely do you get Showtime in hotel rooms. I can think of only one -- at the Hartford, Conn., airport Sheraton!

Darian (Phoenix)

Merchant or Kellerman tomorrow night?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Larry Merchant is on the call and is in the house.

Tomas(Texas)

Do you buy Margarito's excuse for not taking the Mosley fight about no need fighting someone Cotto already beat. It would of been a big name on his resume and possibly bolted his recognition a little more.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

That particular reason is garbage.

David (NY, NY)

Is it fair to call Margarito a hypocrite now, after his years of calling PBF a ducker?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Yes.

Justin, St. Louis

Yo Dan, you think Devon Alaxander would get any title shots in the near future, or would he have to wait to cut ties with Don King?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

He'll get a shot because he is a WBC mandatory.

Frank (Chicago, IL)

Did you see Monte Barrett's ring entrance? Poor guy.

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

I did and that was pathetic. An all-time blooper.

BANISHMENT

Sorry - I ate the other Ricky Hatton, now there's truly only one!

Eric (Columbus, OH)

I'm already liking the looks of Friday Night Fights (aside from just being ecstatic it's coming back) from what you've posted in the schedule, Dan. More Gamboa, plus Quintana-Albert and Urango-Ndougjo should be solid main eventers.

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

I agree.

Newt (Jacksonville)

Dan, you're in Vegas more than most of us -- do you see the town suffering from the economy in general? Might that cut down on the size of purses for big-name fighters in the next year or so?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

I know it's pretty dead here right now. Put it this way -- there was way less traffic getting from the airport to the hotel than usual yesterday.

Antonio Margarito (Tijuana)

From now on, I want to be referred to as "Money" Margarito.

Dave (NJ)

DTM - Any idea where we can get a Swamp Donkey T-shirt??

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

I have to ask DiBella because I want one also.

Brandon (Arlington, VA)

DTM, Sorry i'm late, I wanted to let you know AC/DC was INCREDIBLE Saturday night. One of the best concerts i've ever been to. Then I got to come home and watch Taylor dominate... all in all, a good night.

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Nice.

Rui (Nutley, NJ)

Will Wlad's fight be on HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Yes.

Gerardo, Chicago, IL

Is it true that Billy Graham is in the house? That is weird since I hear he does not have a ticket to the fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Yes he is and it's pathetic. He has been sitting in the MGM bar day and night and when I saw him last night he was hammered.

Fern (GA)

Does the bad economy also mean we will get less updates on the Batphone

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

No because I have a good cell phone plan.

Steve (NYC)

Loved the blog about boxing and the economy. When are promotres going to wake up and see the average fan isn't paying $500 for a mediocre seat at Jones- Calzaghe?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

How about even $150 for the nosebleeds?????

Rui (Nutley, NJ)

With Haye's move up to the heavyweight division, do you think the winner of the Cunningham/Adamek fight establishes a "true" champion at cruiserweight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Yes, the winner is Ring champ and it's No. 1 vs. No. 2.

Sammy(NY)

I was talking with a friend about fighters who were never quite the same after one fight of taking a beating. There was Lacy against Calzaghe and Vargas vs Trinidad. Who do you think is the poster child for something like that?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Obviously, Meldrick Taylor after the first fight with JC Chavez.

Matt (Washington, DC)

Will HBO show the Vlad fight live or on tape delay in the usual slot? I ask because I'd like to go to Holt-Torres III but really don't want to miss the Vlad fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

My understanding is Wlad will be live in th afternoon.

Yuri (VA)

What's the most over-priced fight ticket you've seen? Roy Jones Vs. Felix Trinidad at $15,000 for ringside?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

By far. That was just plain stupid.

Dustin (West Palm Beach)

don't forget David Reid, totally shot after getting whooped.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

That was also pretty bad. He got smashed by Tito.

Steve (NYC)

The irony is people love live fights at the right price. bally's ballroom has been sold out with the likes of Bruce Seldon fighting!

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

You're right. But if you want to charge big money it better be a really big fight.

Tomas(Texas)

Angulo vs Mayorga? Awesome matchup, all out scrap

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

I love it and hope the get it finalized.

Dominic (San Francisco)

Dan, I checked the schedule first, so is there any word on when Andy Lee will be back i action?

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Nothing yet. He had surgery to remove scar tissue over his eye and is just healing up.

Jim (NM)

Dan - i met Johnny Tapia in person a few weeks ago - what a truly nice, humble guy - i know he's had many personal problems, but the guy was a heck of a fighter. How would you sum up his career?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

Johnny is one of the sweetest guys ever when he is not high. He'll be the first to see you across a room and come over and give you a hug. I love the guy. But he has deep, deep demons. As a fighter, he always gave his all, tried to please the fans and never backed down from anyone. He was a really outstanding fighter and I believe a Hall of Famer someday.

lenny (sf, calif)

dan, do you recall what ringside at lewis-tyson went for??

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

I believe $2,000.

Billy Grahm (Manchester)

Give me another pint.....THERE'S ONLY ONE RICKY HATTON.......ahhhh forget it, come on Paulie!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for the chat. Hope you enjoy the fights this weekend and today's notebook and this week's rankings and blog. Just a reminder -- no chat next week because of Thanksgiving but we'll do it again in two weeks when I am back here at the MGM for DLH-Pacquiao! Peace.
