Seriously, what is up with McNabb? Should I be thinking about letting him go because of his performance and schedule for the remainder of the season? Cassel, Ryan, and Thigpen are available in my league (leaning towards Thigpen). I have Big Ben as my #2. Thanks
Hi Gregg. What worries me the most is that he could get yanked again at some point, since coach Reid decided to throw Kolb to the wolves yesterday. So, I don't have a problem with picking up Thigpen, who has a better upcoming schedule overall or Cassel (whose sked is a bit tougher 2 of the next 3 weeks).

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours as well, Steve! I'm fine with Moss and Bowe for sure. It's been a down year for WRs, and they're among the best at the position. Plax is not even worth starting right now in most leagues. It's been a long time since he's had a big game.
I'm seeing Colston and Moore ratings flip flopped everywhere. Who do I use to get 15?
While Colston always has the advantage in terms of more upside, Moore is easily the safer pick these days, so I'd go with him. He's had at least 76 yards and one TD each of the past three weeks.

Hard to go against the record pace Brees in on, Jay. The Packers have run the ball very effectively of late, while the Saints have been chucking it like crazy.

With Asomugha covering Dwayne Bowe next week, is Mark Bradley a decent flex play?
Asomugha usually stays on the same side of the field, but Bradley is a decent flex still, especialy in 12-team leagues or more, because the Chiefs passing game has been effective and Bradley's accounted for a TD in 4 of the past 5 weeks.
How stupid should I feel starting R White-ATL and G Jennings-GB over R Moss this past weekend? I benched Moss starting last week. Should I have seen Moss's performance coming? Should I put him back in next week?
Hey, Brendan. Those are three quality WRs, so it's tough to pick each week. Moss definitely had a better matchup than White did, but it's going to be a tough call for you almost every week. In Week 13, though, White has a much better matchup, so I would play him over Moss in that one. And since both Moss and Jennings face decent pass Ds next week, I'd go with the hot hand of Cassel/Moss, if I had to say right now.

Well, I've been waiting to see how TO played with Romo back, so it was good to see him bust the 100-yard mark finally. Against Seattle's secondary, he should have a decent game on Thanksgiving.
Tim Hightower.....is he worth a spot in a 1 pt PPR league? Love the TD's but he is getting no yards or catches. I have Westbrook, Slaton, Chris Johnson, Lynch and Sammy Morris. Should I cut Morris in favor of Hightower or Mo. Morris.
I don't see how you'd play either Morris or Hightower over what you've got most weeks anyway, to be honest. But at least Hightower is still scoring TDs, which is more than Morris can say. The Pats' RB picture isn't clearing up at all.

I'd have to say Ted Ginn, after the Fins lost Camarillo for the season and the fact that Ginn's provided decent numbers in recent weeks, despite the lack of scores. Miami doesn't face too many great defenses the rest of the way, either.
It looks like Jason Witten's ribs are still really bothering him, 2 straight weeks with a subpar receiving performance. With Dustin Keller getting consistent looks from Favre (along with lots of praise), would you consider starting him over Witten until he proves he's fully healthy?
I don't see any problem with that at all. Keller's got at least 6 catches each of the past 3 weeks. Both TEs face pass-friendly defenses this week.
Any news of Kevin Smith's injury at the end of the game yesterday? He wasn't mentioned in the injury blog. Just curious since he plays on Thursday this week.
Unfortunately, Bobby, I haven't heard coach Marinelli's news conference yet, so no update. But I'm sure our trusty Stephania Bell will have it covered during the next day or two, if there is something to worry about.
Playing the number one team this week, I need Driver to get 50+ yrds or a touchdown tonight to pull off the upset. Look into your crystal ball will it happen? Also Thigpen or Ryan week 13?
Adam, I'd say I like your chances tonight. And I'd go with Ryan vs. SD over Thigpen vs. OAK this coming week.

Johnson is already back at practice, and he's expected to play, but against the Ravens, it's hard to expect much from him statistically this week.
Keith, I traded DeAngelo Williams and Djax for Gore. I thought I made out nicely on this deal...until yesterday. What do you think of Gore the rest of the way?
Gore has had a couple stinkers this year, but otherwise has been very good yardage-wise. He's got a couple good matchups and a couple tough ones the rest of the way, but he's a must-start anyway.
Back to back weeks for Slaton with no catches, whats the deal?
He's really only had two games in which he caught passes for decent yardage, so it's not something you should expect regularly from him anyway. Getting a career-high 21 carries was encouraging, though, wasn't it?
Sup Keith, question about raiders backfield. Fargas played well but couldnt not find the endzone whereas DMC had like 10 carries but 2 tds. Does this forecast anything going forward about who gets goaline duties? is it worth playin either against KC?
Well, your guess is as good as mine as far as what the plan is for the Raiders each week, especially since getting both guys on the field at the same time has been rare. I agree it's a nice matchup vs. KC, but I wouldn't sit any of my regular stud backs in favor of them. I'd only play them if my backfield was more matchup-based anyway.
Pennington or Thigpen this week? Does Camarillo's injury make that decision? i'm afraid of Oaklands secondary...help please. thanks.
St. Louis can't stop anyone, so I have to go with Pennington in that one. Just hope the Dolphins don't score all their TDs on the ground!

The TEs is a tough call ... if Witten's deemed healthy, I think he's got a better chance to score, but we'll know more about his health in the next couple days.And I would stick with Forte, even though it's the Vikes, because Forte is more likely to score, since Dunn's never been big on the end zone. That is a tough call, though, Bob. Good luck!

What is the status of Brandon Jacobs? Does he return? Will he be limited? Is D.Ward now starting?
No official word out of Giants camp on that, but I think the team was playing it safe, knowing that Jacobs could benefit from an extra week's rest, while the running game would still be in good hands with Ward/Bradshaw.
Is Dallas or New England D a better play than Philly's this week?
It's hard to advocate playing any defense against Arizona's high-scoring attack right now, so I'd say Dallas is the better bet to shut down its opponent this week.
What's up with my 1 catch yesterday. I've really only had 1 big (ok huge) game this year, and the rest have been mediocre at best. Would you drop me for Dustin Keller? The Jets have a crazy easy schedule for the rest of the year. Gotta go ice my shoulder...Happy Turkey Day!
Keller's definitely been the better TE, and he's getting looks in the red zone, which is something Winslow really isn't getting. Hard to believe, but I think I'd rather have Keller right now.

It's hard to be excited about any Rams player in fantasy, because of the way their games are going. And it's even worse for a RB, since they've fallen behind so big so early that they become non-factors, except in the passing game. Yes, you can go elsewhere for production, Eddie.

No need for apologies, Roy. I'd rather have the Giants D, so I'd drop Philly's, unless you think you'd be playing them on the weeks you wouldn't play Miami.
Drop Jamal Lewis for McFadden?
I would hang onto Jamal, because at least he's still going to get the majority of carries going forward, despite yesterday's low total. I think the Raiders backs will continue to split carries and be inconsistent fantasy-wise, so it'll be even harder to predict than Lewis' output.
What happened to Cutler yesterday??? Is this a sign of things to come or will he continue to perform a high level???
It's not the same Denver offense that you saw in September, but yesterday was the first time he went without a TD this season, so I expect him to bounce back and get back on the TD string against the Jets this week. They'll probably have to throw a lot.

The Packers' pass D has been good this season, but you know Brees will continue to throw and I suspect that means he'll have mixed results. And while there's nothing official, Bush is unlikely to go tonight.

I thought the games yesterday were very interesting. Isn't it ironic that the best two teams in the NFL are likely in the same city: New York? I was very impressed with how both of them played on the road. These are well-coached teams that will be around at the end.

It certainly could be, especially in the NFC North. Right now, however, it seems like the only team that will come out of the North is the team that wins it because they continue to beat each other. The Packers are probably the most talented team in the division. Ironically, even though they're trailing, I think they are capable of getting on a roll and jumping back into the playoff race. The problem is, there are so many talented teams in the NFC, the wild card situation is very crowded.
A 10-1 record, 18TDs 7INTs, 91 rating 62% completion...Is Eli Manning a serious MVP candidate?
If I were voting, he would be, because he provides a lot of value beyond those stats--great leadership and playing under pressure--and I think he may have the best composure of any other QB. There are guys out there with obviously flashier stats, and to me, he's the perfect description of a team guy. I'm pretty sure you would rather have a Super Bowl ring than an individual record.
Mr. Horton: Is it possible that the winner of the AFC West will finish 8-8 or even worse?
Sure it is. I honestly think even San Diego could win this division. At 4-7, they could go 4-1 and make them 8-8. 8-8 or 9-7 will win this division.
Who you like tonight? Pack or Saints?
I picked New Orleans, 31-27. I think this has a chance to be a very entertaining game. With Brees and the versatility of this offense, the Saints have a great chance even without Bush. Rodgers is playing very well for the Packers, and Grant gives them a run game the Saints don't have. I think the Saints will play with a lot of enthusiasm tonight, and their backs are to the wall. They are a team who is a lot more talented than they've played.
What do you make of Donavan Mcnabb's situation? Do you see him having a big game this week considering it may be his "last hurah" to be the Eagles starting QB?
I'm really concerned about this situation. I like both Andy and Donovan. I cannot understand how they could have pulled Donovan. Kolb wasn't ready to play, and they had to have known what a reaction it would bring. I could see playing Kolb late in the season when they were out of the race, or late in a one-sided game, but McNabb has earned the right to not be humiliated like they did to him last week. To be honest, now, I don't know what happens. Is this a one-game reprieve? Even if he remains the starter, what is his attitude towards the organization? To me, this should have been discussed, and Donovan should have had a clear picture of what the coaches were thinking, and I don't think this was the case. It just doesn't seem like Andy Reid, for all the things these guys have been through together.
Gary, Will the Saints be smart and run Thomas a lot or try to force throws vs a good secondary. It seems to me that you need to adjust and run against the Packers D even if you love chucking the ball like Brees and Co.
Drew Brees can utilize any game plan, and to be honest, you have to give the Saints credit for finding offensive balance even if they don't have a solid run attack. Brees is so good off a play-action that the run makes him very effective, and the weakness of the Packers' defense is the run. The challenge in this game for the Saints is to spread the field and get past the top two corners, Woodson and Harris, because both matchups and the third, fourth, and fifth options, can become favorable. It wouldn't surprise me if the Saints opened up a lot of multi-receiver sets and then came back against sub packages. For all the problems they've had, I think playcalling is a very positive thing for the Saints.
What do you think about Titans D, do you still roll with them despite the blowout yesterday?
Yes I do, but I think the Jets may have partially shown us a gameplan on how to attack the Titans. They used a run game to eat the clock, but it was their short passing game that really impressed me. They used a lot of quick slants, etc., with three- and five-step drops, that almost looked like run plays, and it kept the chains moving, and it also prevented the Titans' front four from getting penetration. Because it moved the chains so much, it kep the defense tired. The way that teams may come after them is a short game with a run game and keeping them on the field. I thought it was the smartest gameplan I have seen all year.
Will Brady Quinn start the Browns next game? I thought Quinn would play the remainder of the season, no matter what?
I think he will start, and I think they pulled him out of this game because of his sore pinky, and the fact that he was struggling because of it. I don't think he was replaced by Derek Anderson because of poor play, even though they both looked lousy. I think Quinn will be the starter the rest of the season as long as he's healthy.
But they are a team in total disarray.
With the Jets beating the last unbeaten team in the NFL is it safe to say that the jets are the dominant team in the AFC?
I've had this conversation twice today with people at ESPN, and right now, the Jets are the best team in the AFC. They do not have any glaring weaknesses, and it seems like every unit has at least one playmaker they can count on. That really keeps things tight. I think their gameplan right now is exactly how they built this team, and they are built to last in the playoffs, because they are one of those teams that can adjust their gameplan to fit any situation, including weather.
Not only did they beat Tennessee on the road, but I thought they dominated them, which really makes you feel good if you are a Jets fan. If I'm a Titans fan, I'm concerned not just about the loss, but the way they lost.
How much has New England Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel impressed you this season?
I think he's one of the best stories of the NFL this year. He has made so much progress from where he started until now, that it's amazing. He plays with confidence, he's making all the throws, and even has mobility that we didn't see from Tom Brady. Having said all that, everybody seems to think that Belichick has opened up his playbook for Cassel, and while he is stretching the field more, this is still a safe and semi-conservative offense. If you study the film, a lot of those yards come off of short passes to get YAC. I watched some film this morning, and I came away obviously impressed with Cassel, but more impressed with the gameplan the coaches are putting together. They know exactly what his strengths and weaknesses are and cater the gameplan to that.
Where do you see Matt Ryan and the falcons fitting into the playoff picture after dominating Carolina 45-28 yesterday?
They're right in the middle of it, because I think their defense is solid enough, but they also have offensive balance. They can throw with Ryan, and adjust to a power run game. Right now, even Carolina is not getting great consistent play from Delhomme, and TB only has Garcia. I think this race is going down to the wire. I think Atlanta will be in it to the end.
We don't have great attractive games on Thursday, but I don't think it matters. You wanna lay on the couch and watch football, and we have three NFL games in which to to that. Can you ask for much more? Every week means something, and we're really headed for a great finish in a lot of these divisions.

Frank, The Saints chances are "SLIM and NONE" even if they win tonight but there is still hope a this point. They have talent but too inconsistent (especially) defensively.
It seems like Green Bay is getting a lot of credit for their Pass Defense, but they also haven't played against a strong pass offense like the Saints and won. For example week 3 against Dallas. Advantage Saints?

Brandon,He has played much better than I would have thought and depending on how he finishes the season , he could be a big name on the market. Remember the Pat's still have some of the best TARGETS in the passing game to distribute the ball to. Can he do it with out the Welker and Moss combination ??

Andrew,I don't see Thomas having as big a game as Brees and their air attack. wheather Shockey is going to have a big game or not remains to be seen. Shockey could put up some big numbers but Brees has several targets that can be factors tonight-

When will the Bengals be sold and run by a competent owner ? They have the smallest scout staff, no GM, and an owner who likes playing with Daddy's toy. They could have had TWO #1 Picks from the Skins last year for Ocho Cinco, but they passed on that one. Sadly Lewis will be retained because Mike Brown is too cheap to carry 2 coach contracts.
Mr. Brown,Don't worry , I believe they will loosen up some after this dismal season. No I don't see a dramatic change but I'm thinking there has to be some different faces around that franchise for the Browns to move forward.
Hey Moll-man, Happy turkey day! I'm a tempered Jet enthusiast. Despite all the glowing reports and superbowl mania (you should hear the sports radio talk around NY), I feel the Steelers are the team to beat in the AFC. Their D is tops and Rothlesburger is as profficient as they come, but really I think its their experience that gives them the egde. Your thoughts?

Yes the Steelers are for real but so are the Titans- I'm happy for the Jets fans as it's been a long time for a positive player like Favre to walk those streets. TItans, Steelers, (Jets and Pat's are very closely matched)- Let's see how the stretch run comes out.

Darren, McFadden , Hillis has done a nice job for the Broncos but Darren MC is the real deal.

Did you see the referee pick the DB guarding Marvin Harrison on the fourth down play last night? Does that happen often? I thought it was pretty funny, but neither of the announcers commented on it.
Morgan,Marvin (and other receivers) do that on purpose. Receivers get a "natural" rub by running close to the Ref and obviously there is nothing a defender can do about it. Another tough loss for the Chargers !!
I'm having trouble deciding if I should go with Driver or Colston tonight.

Ben,NO there isn't a reason they shouldn't resign him unless he is just unreasonable about how much $ he is asking for! He can still play at a high level not not the best in the league.

Of the 50 teams that have scored 30 defensive points in a season since 1995 (the Packers have 48 at the moment), do you know how many have scored more than 30 the year after? One!

Jeesh, my cuse finally wins a big game, followed up by my titans just falling over. I knew the football gods would get me. Anyway, do you think the Titans are still in good position? How do you think the injuries will hurt them going forward?
It's pretty much just prep-for-the-playoffs time for the Titans, who have ten wins with games against Detroit, Cleveland, and Houston still to go. Even losing one of those games would give them 12 games and that should be enough to guarantee them a playoff spot and have them in the running for home field advantage. They just need to rest their guys up.
How do you see the Bears/Vikings game playing out next weekend? If you like the Vikings, would the suspension of the Williams boys change your opinion?
Well, considering their entire defense is built around the play of the Les Williams Dangereux, yes. I think it's going to be hard for them to win at all without their two star defensive tackles.
Bill, Andy Reid benching McNabb for poor play was very undermining of his QB. Donovan has better all around stats than Roethlisbeger, and he hasn't been bench yet.
It was the wrong time to make what might be the right move. McNabb's been awful the past two weeks; a total mechanical mess, but bringing in Kolb without any prep for the second half of a game against the Ravens? Bad idea.
As usual, I say this: Ask a question over and over again and I'll guarantee that I don't answer it.

Stuck against the Ravens. Warned you in the fantasy matchups column last week that the Giants' performance was an (impressive) exception, not the rule.

Everything's changed for Johnson contextually. Even if he hadn't been subjected to the Curse of 370, his offensive line is significantly worse and his quarterback isn't anywhere near as good. If he gets in the right situation again, he could have a year or two comparable to 2006, but it's not likely.

Mix of everything. Coaching's not great. Secondary's playing much worse than it did last year. I wrote early in the year that Cromartie wasn't going to have a big interception year (based upon the history of guys with 10+ interception seasons, of course) and got a bunch of angry letters from people. Cromartie's got two picks this year.

I think Peyton looks alright, if not the deadly weapon he was in previous years. All they need to do is make sure they get to the playoffs. The '06 Colts looked awful heading into the postseason; the '07 Giants were terrible and then had a great Week 17 game against the Pats before elevating their game in the playoffs. Just get there and anything can happen.

Communication from the coaching staff to the players, although Joey Porter's refusal to come out of the game last week isn't a good sign. Secondary's playing better. Offensive line's playing much better. Both Nick Saban and Cam Cameron left a lot to be desired when it came to their offensive line analysis.
Bill, I'm a Packer fan and I found your article quite interesting. Can't remember if you mentioned this, but I think another reason why the Packers D won't keep up the pace is because of the weather/environment. With some of the games being at ice-cold Lambeau, teams will naturally throw less (Packers strength) and run more (Packers weakness). They don't strip the ball nearly as well as other teams, so there won't be as many opportunities to score.
I think that doesn't help, either, but there's definitely examples of warm weather teams not keeping up their trends too. San Francisco in 1999 had six TOs through 11 games and then zero the rest of the way; St. Louis had five through 11 in 1995 and then zero. '98 Falcons had five through 11 and then 1 the rest of the way.There's just not a relationship between how a team did through ten games with defensive touchdowns and how they did in the final six. None.

Our research into the rookie wall has shown that it's pretty easy to climb, and that guys in the second half actually play better than they do in the first. Whatever they lose from being tired gets counteracted by their improvements in learning the playbook and feeling more comfortable at the NFL level.

The biggest thing that people haven't talked about in Philly is the loss of Shawn Andrews, who's their best offensive lineman and an absolute mauler up front. I think they miss him a lot. Westbrook's also played well in the past with injuries, but that was with a steady offense around him. The offense is anything but steady at the moment. We've found that quarterback injuries have a stronger impact on the running game than even running back or offensive line injuries, and while McNabb's not hurt, having him not play well is undoubtedly causing their ground game some issues.

No on the first part -- I still put Tennessee over the Jets based upon their season's work as opposed to one game. How likely is it that they'll play in the Super Bowl? Before this week, we had the Giants with a 42 percent chance of winning the NFC and the Jets with an 11 percent chance of winning the AFC. That would be a 4% chance of them both making it to the SB. Even if their chances have gone up dramatically this week, it's not up to more than 7-8% total.
The Curse of 370 doesn't include receptions? Getting tackled after you catch the ball is less problimatic than if you carry it?
Research we've done in I believe Pro Football Prospectus 2006 showed that catches weren't anywhere near as taxing as carries. It makes sense if you think about it -- getting tackled by a 180-pound corner isn't as damaging as getting absorbed by a 350-pound tackle.

No, they knew what they had. There were issues with how he likes to take chances and McCarthy wanted his QB to play within the system, more.. Favre and GM Thomson didn't see eye to eye and it was becoming a difficult situation that had to play out the way it did.
