Greetings Fight Freaks! We're going on Wednesday this week because of the holiday, so I hope you're ready. Make sure to check out today's blog and Lennox Lewis exclusive interview. We've got a lot to discuss also with Hatton's big win over Malignaggi and this weekend's Paul Williams-Verno Phillips and Cris Arreola-Travis Walker HBO card. Let's get to it.
James Kirkland was impressive this past weekend against Vera. Think its about time for him to take on someone in the top ten, really step it up now.
I agree. I thought Kirkland looked very good. He's so good to watch and he is such a respectful kid outside the ring. But inside the ring, he's looking to knock you out, which is something fight fans can surely appreciate. He did a great job against Vera, who was soooo tough.
can you please tell my brother that a prime Roy Jones will beat the **** out of a prime Kelly Pavlik?!!!?!?$%@#
Bjorn's brother -- A prime Roy Jones would beat the **** out Kelly Pavlik. How's that?
Was it just me, or was it pretty clear that Kirkland, while fun to watch would be simply picked apart by a ligitimate contender? He seems like alot of hype to me.
No doubt Kirkland needs to work on some things, but it's a process. He's not a complete fighter yet. The hope is he can develop into one. And even if he does lose, he'll always be fun to watch. Did people care when Gatti lost? No and he still made a ton of money and put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces.
Dan, Specifically referring to the Hatton/Malinaggi fight, are there specific holding rules in boxing? What is your opinion on when it is appropreiate for a ref to deduct points?
Excessive holding should result in point deductions, which is at the referee's discretion.
Dan, as good as Hatton looked against Paulie, there is no way he gets away with that pressure against Manny or Oscar. I think he gets drilled either way, even though Paulie has no pop he hit Ricky alot in that fight.
Obviously, Paulie had very little to keep Ricky off him but Hatton was doing some subtle things that he hadn't been doing. He won and won impressively so he should deserve a shot at the DLH-Pacquiao winner. That winner vs. Hatton is an enormous fight.
Did you think that HBO guys were a little harsh on Paulie... we all know it wasnt it his best night but they gave his management team and promoter more credit for getting him there than they did to Paulie...I just felt that was a little disrespectful...your thought ?
I thought they were telling it like it is. You do have to give Paulie for winning the fight he fought but his promoter, Lou DiBella, did a masterful job getting him the proper fights where he could look good.
hola dan... i may be one of the few, but if all else fails i would be extremely excited to see a JM Marquez vs Ricky Hatton fight by the end of next year.
That would be interesting if JMM decided to move up again. But he has business at 135 first. But if it happened, I would be interested even though I think JMM might be a tad too small for Hatton.
I think my 12 year old daughter is a freak in training. I was watching the fight Saturday in my basement with her and my dog when she asked me if boxing was on every Saturday night. Now she wants to watch the Williams fight with me this weekend.
Now that the Mosley/Margo fight is happening, is Berto vs Collazo now official?
Not yet. They are still trying to work it out, but Collazo is a little Winkyish with his money expectations.
Did you see Jhonny Gonzales vs Reynaldo Lopez? Gonzales was impressive, should he fight Juan Manuel Lopez early next year? He deserves it
Agreed. I did see it. I'd love to see Gonzalez vs. Lopez or Caballero or a rematch with Vazquez. Any of them. Jhonny is exciting.
Any news on the fourth PPV fight for 12/6? Robert Guerrero or Daniel Jacobs?
Right now it is going to be Jacobs.
It's been said many times, but I'd like to say it again, you are the man Dan! Thanks for having a chat today when you could have easily made it an off week!
Thanks. You're right, I could have. But I'm a Freak like you.
I must admit even though i'm not the biggest Hatton fan it was nice seeing the impact Big Floyd had on him on Saturday. My question is, don't you think Paulie was "tailor-made" for Hatton due to the fact he had no power to keep the pressure off of him.
In a sense, yes. Once it was clear Pauli could not hurt him and Hatton was able to hurt Paulie in the second round, Paulie really had no chance to win after that because he wasn't outboxing him and had no chance for a knockout.
who do you think will be miguel cotto next opponent cause i here many different names
It's still up in the air. Michael Jennings is possible, so is Soto Karass, who fights Friday on Telefutura. I think the notion of Cintron has cooled off.
Dan, how excited are you for the Cunningham - Adamek fight? One of many great fights to end the year.
It's an excellent match and I'm happy it's on regular cable on Versus, which did a good job picking up that fight.
Dan who do you like in the Angulo-Mayorga matchup? I think if Mayorga shows up like he did against Mosley he wins otherwise he gets KO'd.
First off, I LOVE the fight. Even though Mayorga got wacked by Mosley, he is still a step up and a legit test for Angulo. We will know a lot about Angulo after that fight.
Hey Dan, dont you agree that Manny Pacquaio beat Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera when they were out of their primes? And dont you agree that he got beat by Juan Manuel Marquez? I had it 114-113 Marquez! Mexian Assasin my a**! I can see Marquez beat Hatton but i cant see Manny.
Morales and Barrera were closer to the end than the beginning, but Barrera was still top dog at feather when they met the first time. And Morales was still fighting very very well. I did think Marquez beat Manny twice but even still, let's give Manny credit for being a great fighter. You sound like an upset Mexican.
It seems like Duddys career has never been the same after his fight with Whalid in blowing a 7 figure pay day with Pavlik....any news on him after his split with irish Ropes ?
It looks like his proposed Jan. 17 HBO fight with Ronald Hearns is down the drain. No idea what they're going to do but as soon as Duddy fights a serious opponent, he will lose.
Peace DR. With Paul Williams fighting for the oh so glamerous interim belt at 154, is it safe to say he is going to stay there for a little seeing that noone wants to fight him at 147?
Probably for a bit, but who's going to want to fight him at 154 either?
With Zab Judah moving back down to 140, don't you think he could make some noise there? I think a fight between him a Hatton could be very interesting
I think that fight is pretty doubtful. Ricky has much bigger paydays and bigger fights out there.
ur opinion who are the top two welterweights today
How about you look at the weekly rankings?
Hey Jose in East LA--That's why we call him the MEXICUTIONER!!!!!!!
Gotta give HBO props for throwing a little more into the pot. Do you know how much more they threw in and does Margo get all the additional or it is split 50-50 as well?
The extra money goes to Top Rank and Margarito. I don't know the exact amount but if you figure he was offered $2 million and asked for $3 million, the extra money was probably an amount in between, so my guess would be anywhere from an extra $300,000 to $500,000.
Hey Dan,its me again I just want to know if the Arce-Darchynan fight is finalized, who you picking?
Glad you asked. I can report to you loyal Freaks first that Darchinyan-Arce is a DONE deal for Feb. 7 on Showtime at the Honda Center in Anaheim. I was writing the story before the chat started and will finish it after the chat. I like Vic in the fight.
Dan, your take: can you see Angulo and Kirkland being steered away from each other until they both hold titles, thus creating a mini-megafight at 154 within the next few years?
Their not being steered from each other, the fight just makes no sense right now. If they both keep winning and looking good and developing sure it could be a terrific fight in a couple of years.
Hey berndawg, thats why he started crying after a past his prime morales gave him a boxing lesson their first fight, and thats why hes too scared to fight Juan Manuel a 3rd time, CUZ HE KNOWS HE LOST THE PAST TWO!
How about Jorge vs. Berndawg on the undercard???
Dan, Any idea on the venue for Mayorga\Angulo yet?
TBA. Don King is the one getting the site and he's working on it.
Is Devon Alexander fighting in December?
Yes, Devon is on the bout sheet for an eight-rounder on the Dec. 11 Cunningham-Adamek card against TBA. Not sure if his fight will make TV. Depends on if the other fights are KOs.
Continuing the theme from your blog, I'm thankful that horrible Rahman pic is finally off ESPN's boxing front page.
Dan, Lennox said he thought Paulie hurt his right hand in the fight. Did he break it again?
I talked to Paulie after the fight and he didn't think his hand was broken again although it was pretty sore.
Dan, last friday was the first time i've sceen Molitor, was it just not his night or was he over his head?
I had seen a number of Molitor's fights and he was not himself at all. That said, I do give Caballero a lot of credit for going to Molitor's turf and looking impressive.
Hey dan, whats next for Juan Diaz?
Golden Boy and HBO are talking about March fight between Diaz and JM Marquez.
No Ghost on 12/6? When is stepping into the ring again? He's been on the shelf for a while now...
He is in arbitration with promoter Dan Goossen in an attempt to break their contract. It takes time for that to work its way through the system. As soon as their is a ruling he will either be free of the contract and likely sign with Golden Boy or he will remain with Goossen. At that point one of those promoters will get him a fight.
Caballero looked good, but damn his throws wide punches. I think someone like JM Lopez would put him on his behind with his short crisp shots
so no Winky? man i was stoked to see him in action again, any word on anything from him ever again or is he going to go back into hiding?
He's got an injured hand so we won't see him until at least early 2009. When, where and against whom, I have no idea.
wats next for juan manuel lopez
Someone needs to check the schedule dude.
Dan, do you feel Mayweather will ever come back? And if so, what do you speculate to be the outcomes if he faces Margarito, Cotto, or Pacquiao?
Of course, he will be back.
Dan, i would make berndawg cry just like how morales made pacquaio cry their first fight
Forget Danny Jacobs--Jose and me, four rounds opening the PPV on 12/6. You're going down like Goldie, pal.
It's ON!! We'll call the fight When Freaks Attack!
Dan: for the sake of argument let's say that Manny loses to Oscar and that Joe C does actually retire. Wouldn't the pound4pound rankings be at their greatest confusion in a long time?
Yes, that would certainly make for an interesting discussion. At that point, I guess it would come down to Hopkins or Marquez.
silly questions are making b (new jersey) look awfully delicious!
Anyone got the $100 million yet?
What is your take on the HBO fights this weekend? Goosen can talk up VPhillips and TWalker but I do not see either being competetive although both are talented. We will see i guess.
I'm happy to see Williams and Arreola in action but I tend to agree with you. I think Arreola stops Walker, maybe early, and I think Williams will outhustle Phillips.
Have you heard any about D-Hop?
Demetrius is on the Holt-Torres 3 undercard Dec. 13 in AC, but not on TV.
Dan - Thanks for all the great notebook entries. Do you think Bob Arum can really pull off the Split-Location Cotto and Pavlik fights in February, especially without HBO or Showtime?
Bob has the money to do pretty much what he wants to do, so yes, it's possible.
when will the welterweight titles be unify cause we need a clear cut champion who do you see being that boxer
Right now, with Williams out of the division, Cotto having lost and Mayweather retired, it's pretty clear that Margarito is No. 1.
Hey Dan, i noticed you picked against the brits in recent fights...choosing Jones and Malignaggi to win only for them both to get certifiably creamed. Did you doubt Joe and Rickys abilities against American fighters? I know traditionally british fighters havent been viewed as elite here in the US.
I have never ever ever ever once picked a fight based on nationality. Frankly, it never even entered my mind.
are you serious berndawg? it will be like Juan Manuel Marquez vs Manny Pacquaio round 8 ill be like marquez and you will be like pacqauio
I'm an idiot!
Dan, with how impressive ricky hatton looked against the magic man, where do u put him pound for pound? and do u think with the way he has a weakness for a counter left hook he would have any chance against the bigger stronger de la hoya?
Hatton deserves to move up a couple of spots off his victory. If Oscar beats Manny, they will almost certainly make DLH-Hatton. Of course, Hatton would have a chance even if he's an underdog.
I heard Boxrec already has Jose vs Berndawg on its schedule.
Dan, love that Mosley is fighting at 147,hoping for a Shane victory then rematch w/Cotto in summer...thoughts?
I think Margarito-Mosley is one of the best fights that can be made right now in the sport, so I am psyched it was made. I have to give big props to HBO for stepping up. A lot of us rag on HBO about things at times, but let's also give credit where credit is due -- without HBO believing in the fight it wouldn't happen, simple as that. If Shane wins, Arum has already said he is going to make Margarito-Cotto 2 anyway, so Shane wouldn't get a Cotto rematch. But things can change.
Just want to say that your post on Lennox was fun to read. Keep up the good work!
Thanks. I hope all the Freaks will take some time and read the Lennox Lewis story. It should answer a lot of questions about the rumors of him making a comeback.
After seeing Paulie several times in the last few years I never thought I would hear you refer to him as a "good guy" but I have to agree. He was really humble at the post fight press conference.
Maybe I am biased, but I have known Paulie since he was an amateur. I have talked to him many times, seen him at fights. My wife has even met him. He's just a great guy. He talks a lot of smack sometimes, but he's really a good dude past all that stuff. He's an honest fighter too. Just goes to work and does the best he can.
Whats next for Rafael Marquez?
Good question. After the Vazquez fourth fight went away, I'm not sure.
Hows this for an interim fight while Pavlik makes his mandatory, Williams against Abraham with the winner getting Pavlik?
Sounds like someone started drinking for Thanksgiving early.
With Mosley-Margarito getting finalized, does that mean Margarito dropped out of the Winky Wright School of Business?
It would seem that way. Good for him.
If you're Oscar De La Hoya are you rooting for or against shane january 24th?
That's interesting. Of course, if Margarito won that would be a big fight for Oscar. But Shane is his friend at this point and a Shane win is also good for the company bottom line. Put 'em together and Oscar will of course be rooting for Shane.
Regarding the stoppage, what did you think? I think Paulie should have been stopped. Nobody wanted to see him continue to take a beating, except maybe Paulie.
I understand Paulie being upset about it, but it's hard to argue with. He was taking shots and had ZERO chance to win.
Im sick of all the talk about how great Calzaghe is. Does he deserve the Hall? Yes. Bottom line: He defended against 0 competition and fought an over the hill Jones and past his prime Hopkins. More to prove me thinks.
You need to look at his resume a bit closer. He beat a lot of very solid contenders, two young titleholders with ease (Lacy and Kessler), a Hopkins who is still a top 5 p4p fighter and topped it off against Jones, who was past his prime but so what? The Jones fight was simply the cherry on top.
Dan, how would history view Sugar Shane w/ an upset victory over Margarito?
That would be a huge lift to Shane's resume. I think he's already a Hall of Famer. A win of that magnitude would be huge though.
Dan, I read your chats and columns every week, good work. Are the rumors about Oscar's left shoulder legitimit or is this another Oscar post fight excuse?
The shoulder thing is not news. Oscar has had it forever. I remember sitting with Oscar in his hotel room for an interview at the Borgata in AC a week after he fought Mayorga and he was pointing out all the various injuries he had and the shoulder was one of them.
Why hasn't Clottey vs Cotto ever been discussed. Maybe not know cause Cotto is looking for a gimme, but would that fight ever happen?
I think it could happen but with Cotto coming off a loss, they're not looking for a fight THAT tough right now. Down the road, I could see it maybe since they are both with Top Rank.
I heard that DLH was sparring with Valero to get ready for Pacman, any word on who Pacman has brought in to emulate DLH? thanks
Yes, Valero has sparred with Oscar but I an not sure which fighters Pacquiao has sparred with other than Amir Khan.
Did Sergio Moron turn down $250,000 to fight Martinez ?
That is my understanding.
Dan-tastic Voyage, Is Manny P. a HOF'er regardless of the DLH fight, if not, what else does he need to accomplish?
Yes, he is already a HOFer. Won titles in five divisions, beat a lot of good opponents, including three future HOFers in Morales, Barrera and Marquez.
If Calzaghe sticks to his word and refuses to give Bhop a rematch...could we see Bhop v Dawson in 09?
BHop has said he's not interested in Dawson because he's not that big of a name, but I would actually be interested in that fight. I'm not sure what else is out there for BHop, who also said he had no interest in a third fight with Jermain Taylor.
Dan - My thinking is that Mosley could really take a beating against Margarito - am I in the minority?
Could Shane lose? Sure. A beating I don't think so, but you never know.
Cant say I would be all that excited about DLH-Hatton. What do you think about this fight?
Huge event, decent fight in the ring.
While his was an honest question, Nick should be banned for utter ignorance in the matter of Joe C.
Im very aware of his resume Dan. I just see the competition hes faced. Lacy was always one dimensional. Kessler is a very good fighter, ill add that to the respectability list. But the fact remains that he did not face the best for the long haul...like sayyy Hopkins, or Sugar Ray (both), or Oscar, or Floyd Jr., the list goes on and on. Certainly one of the best now. But he waited to face the best for too long, and then after 3 tough fights (2 of them against game competitors) he wants to retire "on top". Joe, you just got to the top buddy.
You can nitpick the resume of any top fighter. Let it go my brother. Dude was champion for 11 years, moved up and won the title in another division against a top 5 p4p guy. Defended the 168 title 21 times and beat numerous quality contenders even though there was no mega fight. And whatever you think of Lacy and Kessler they were undefeated titleholders when they fought and they were both younger than him. Jeeeez.
Sorry if this was asked before, but if Winky just fades away, is he on the fringe of HOF consideration?
I think Winky, regardless of what happens in the future, will get some HOF consideration. He fought all around the world and beat guys in their hometown, he was the first undisputed 154 champ in like 30 years, beat Mosley twice, destroyed Trinidad (who was past his prime, granted). My point is, Winky will get a lot of support from the HOF voters.
Will the Cunningham-Adamek fight establish the Ring Magazine cruiserweight champion, since it's #1 vs. #2?
Yes, the winner will be Ring champion.
will the diaz-marquez fight be on PPV?
If that fight is made, it would be regular HBO.
I think what Nick is basically saying is Yes, Calzaghe beat everyone and fought everyone - he just came up in a terrible era for super middleweights as far as the overall level of talent. My take it hey, it's not Joe's fault that the division he cleaned out was weak. He did all he could.
Dan, I wanted to get your take on Mike Alvarado. I went to his fight here in Denver. While I think he can crack, my impression of him seeing him live was a strong lack of speed and defense. What is your take on this young prospect?
Mike isn't the fastest or most defensive guy, but he's a tough fighter with good power and physicality with his opponents. He also makes good fights. Keep in mind, he didn't have a huge amateur career either. He fights in a few weeks in the final main event on Telefutura.
What's your take on the Vitali-Lewis fight? IMO Lewis was a clear winner even though Vitali was competitive, if they didnt stop the fight at that point we would of seen something out of Kill Bill w/Vitali's eyeball getting stomped on by Lewis
Bottom line-- it makes no difference what the scores were. Lennox hit him with a massive shot and opened the worst cut I have ever seen. That's a TKO win for Lennox. Period.
DANnibal, is it true that Taylor's team is discussing with Bute's handlers? If not, who is he going to fight in early 2009?
Yes, as I wrote in my blog last Saturday. DiBella told me he has been in touch with Bute's people. It was a prelimary conversation. Lou also hopes to make a Taylor fight with Calzaghe. Barring either of those, Taylor is also mandatory for the Froch-Pascal winner.
Diaz-Marquez would be huge, especially in Texas or Mexico City! Im stoked for that already! Potential Fight of the year!
I agree. I would be a sensational fight. Winner should fight Nate Campbell.
Must make fights: Taylor/Kessler or Taylor/Calzaghe Margarito/Cotto 2 Margarito/Money May Pacquiao/Marquez 3 Dawson/Calzaghe
Hard to argue with any of them.
Dan, would you rather see Hatton-DLH or Hatton-Pacman. Both would be HUGE events but I think Hatton-Pacman would be a better fight in the ring.
I agree with you 100%.
One of my favorite quotes, but I can't remember who said it: "Vitali was ahead on the cards, but Lewis was ahead on the face." It wasn't Merchant, although it sounds like him.
I loved Lennox' answer that he'd come back and fight the winner of Vitali vs. Wlad. LOL!!
I've got to compliment you on the "happenings in the media room" blogs. Excellent, inside stuff.
Thank you. Those are fun blogs to do and I am glad the Freaks enjoy them.
Dan, what was that "special to ESPN" story about Caballero - Molitor about claiming the fight was for the jr. feather undisputed championship? Being Thanksgiving we should be thankful for the regular ESPN writers who know their stuff and write it well.
I have no idea. I noticed that also. It was simply wrong.
Dan, if Edwin Valero is a free agent what is holding up him from signing with golden boy, had they gotten it done last week he could have been on Dec. 6?
You ever deal with a fighter? They're mostly crazy.
I love how King is trying to put together Trinidad-Hopkins. Gotta love big DON.
Don is living just a tad in the past sometimes.
Happy Thanksgiving, Papa!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. You too son.
Is Mosley delusional? Cotto fought the perfect fight against Margarito with much more power than Shane could possibly muster. Not only did Cotto get killed, he never even hurt Margarito. What is Shane thinking? Do you give him any shot?
Of course, I give him a shot. Shane has fought a lot of tough fighters and he is faster than Margarito and has a great chin. I'm not saying he wins, but you have to give any top fighter a shot.
I was browsing through my cable guide yesterday and noticed that Azteca America was airing some fights on Saturday Night -- dont see anything on the schedule though? Any idea which they might be? Edgar Sosa fight?
Not sure but Azteca shows a lot of fights. They showed Humberto Soto's recent fight and the recent Ulises Solis title defense.
Chris Arreola over/under 250 lbs for Saturday?
Whats the story with the Beef between Roach and Nacho?
Not sure exactly but it may stem from stuff that went down during the two Pacquiao-Marquez fights.
it seems like Bhop is going to have to step into the roll of stepping stone to get any big fights. I think he would relish the chance to take down the up and coming stars..just to prove too prove everybody wrong.
Sort of like he did to Pavlik.
Dan, I am excited to see Danny Jacobs, but bummed that his 4 round fight will be part of a $60 package. Any chance Golden Boy adds another fight?
Daniel will be in an 8, not a 4. That said, it sure isn't the strongest undercard ever.
Danimal, Give me your Top 5 Favorite fighters All-time!
In no particular order some of my favorites are Sugar Ray Leonard, Arturo Gatti, Popo Freitas and Ricardo Lopez.
Just as an FYI; both Powerade and Tecate are offering $20 rebate for the Dream Match.
Just thought i would let all the freaks know i'm on my way to the store to get my thanksgiving ham, and turkey, and potato chips, and gatorade HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
RIP Toby Gibson!
Yes, you are right. If you didn't hear the news, the Las Vegas referee apparently killed himself this week, just a few days after working the undercard at Hatton-Malignaggi. Condolences to his family and friends.
All this talk coming for David Haye is really starting to get old. Do you think when ever he fights either of the brothers klitschko he is going to get KOed? It seem we are not giving them(klit) enough due.
I think either Klitschko drills him.
What's the first fight on your wish list for 2009?
Margarito-Mosley and it's done!
I thought your top 5 fighters would have been John Ruiz, Billy Dib, Zahir Raheem, Andrew Golota and Zab Judah's Shower Door. Looks like I went 0-for-5.
Any chance of Winky now going straight to Abraham when he is healed?
Is Showtime having a January saturday night card?
Showtime is planning to go dark in January for Showtime Championship Boxing although there will still likely be ShoBox.
OK, Freaks, thanks for the chat today. I hope you check out today's stories. Have a great Thanksgiving, enjoy this weekend's fights and we'll talk again next week from Vegas where I will be covering DLH-Pacquiao! Peace.
