Thanks for dropping by.. big week of games coming up. I'm fired up to head down to ATL for the SEC title game and ready to talk some college football.
Bruce, alot of Texas fans are mad about the way the BCS Standins turned out. In my opinion i like the system. How do you feel about it?
I think there are two separate issues: the BCS system and the Big 12 tie breaker format. OU is a very good team and made a strong case. I just think Texas has made a better case to play Mizzou.
If florida beat bama, what are the chances UT makes the national title game?
Whoever wins the SEC game is playing for the title and unless Mizzou upsets OU, I think the Sooners are getting the other spot.
Hey Bruce, enjoy your work on CFL. Can you give me an early top 10 for next year?
Thanks.. it's way early and impossible because so many key guys might leave early (Tebow, Spikes, Knowshon, Stafford, etc)...
Do the USC Trojans have any shot at the title game?
Doubt it. They'd need Mizzou to beat OU soundly but then Texas still figures to trump USC. The Trojans simply don't have enough wins over good teams. They were practically doomed by Sept with a loss to an Oregon State team that got whipped by Penn State and that week where the Pac-10 got hammered by the MWC.
How much of a factor is the Harvin injury?
It's big. He opens up everything for the scatback guys because defenses have to stress so much on Harvin.
Do you think that Graham Harrell has the talent to play in the NFL?
Yes. He's accurate and tough and very smart.
Speaking of next season, GT returns 19 starters (including all 11 on offense) How successful will the Paul Johnson Express be in year 2?
Huge. I'd put them in a top 10 and Dwyer is a Heisman contender.
Bruce, I just heard Brian Kelly say he is happy at Cincinnati and is staying. I think the timing of this announcement makes sense for recruiting. Could we be seeing the beginning of Cincinnati as a football powerhouse in the years to come if BK stays around for a while?
Not ready to go that far. He's a good coach, but I think it's going to take more for them to consistently become a top 10 program.
Brian, if you had to pick the most explosive and exciting team in college football to watch week in and week out, who would you pick and why?
Florida's the most explosive right now although I find some of those C-USA teams (Tulsa, Rice, Houston) to be really exciting.
Oregon is fun to watch too.
How good can Kansas be next year. Good enough to reach the Big 12 Championship game?
Maybe. As long as Reesing's there, they're a threat and Mizzou will take a step back without Chase. The rest of the South is still shaky.
Who will be the next head coach at Mississippi State?
Derek Dooley or Tommy Bowden are my best guesses. Maybe Charlie Strong or Ty Nix gets in the mix. Whoever gets that job has to be a strong recruiter.
Bruce, Would say that Charlie Weis is ND's Bill Callahan? Look how much better Nebr is this year with the same players on the field.
I would say Weis is ND's Rich Kotite.
What are the chances that Taylor Mays stays at USC for hise senior year??
My hunch is he goes. He has had a great second half of the season and he will test off the charts at the combine.
If Tommy Tuberville is out at Auburn, who's on the short list to replace him? With so many big name coaches in the conference, can they really do any better than Tuberville at this point?
No. They can not do better than Tuberville. Good luck to the guy who replaces him after what he did there.
True or False: the SEC championship will be decided by whomever wins the matchup of Alabama's D-line vs. Florida's O-line.
True. Ole Miss beat UF in part because it has an outstanding Dline.
Bruce, with most of the teams in the big ten going to the mobile qb's and the spread option offences. do u think wisconsin will have to eventually go that way to stay competitive?
Not necessarily. If you do what you do well and that's being a power team, you can still thrive.
Considering their season, what do you now think of Georgia Tech's triple option offense?
Is it possible Kelly is just waiting for the ND job to open? He seems to be the most logical choice if it opened up next year, no?
I've thought that too. And if I'm an ND fan I'm hoping ND moves on him now. The Irish missed out on Urban Meyer and got stuck with Weis and now it's blown up in their faces with a ridiculous contract and in year four are still miles away from being even ranked. If you can get Kelly, get him. You'd still have to pay Weis either way. Might as well do it when you can still have a good team too.
Bruce, is it true Washington has interviewed Pat Hill for their opening? Do you think he'd be a good choice for UW?
Yes, Hill has interviewed with them. .. Eh. He's a good coach, but I think they could do better.
Bruce, Charlie, should he stay or go? I know there are problems but they all can't be his. Would his leaving help or hurt the tradition at Notre Dame?
His leaving would help.
So who will be LSU's next D-Coordinator?
That's a good question. My hunch is someone who has coached in the SEC before.
If you where an NFL reciever, what college QB would you be begging your coach to pick up in the up comming draft
Nate Davis or Matt Stafford or maybe Sam Bradford.
Will Todd Reesing be in the heisman tak next year?
Maybe, but I doubt he's a frontrunner.
Do you think Ole Miss can win the SEC West next year with LSU and Alabama's question marks at QB?
They have a good shot. Snead is terrific although losing Peria Jerry will hurt their D a lot. He's outstanding. He'll be the toughest to replace, but I think Ted Laurent, Powe and Lawon Scott are solid replacements.
Bruce, please help me get some Heisman votes. The idiots at ESPN keep on ignoring that I'm easily the best running back out there.
I voted you #1 for the Doak Walker yesterday.. that help?
With Florida at the moment being a 10 point favorite. Do you think that is too much or too little?
I think it's too much. As I wrote earlier today, many times where there's a big game, the team everyone seems to be picking against tends to surprise.. also Bama can do many of the things Ole Miss did when it beat UF in that they are a very physical team.
Where does ole miss go for a bowl game? Capitol one of cotton
I think Cotton is most likely vs. Texas Tech.
Who do you have going to the heisman ceremonies and winning?
As of now I'm voting Colt first, Bradford #2 and Tebow #3.
Bruce, what are your first impressions of Lane Kiffin at Tennessee?
Interesting choice. He's very different from Fulmer and will make sure he shakes up the program. I know he's got a ton of confidence in himself, which is a plus, and he'll put together a very good staff. It is a big job though.
Do you think Ole Miss is better than their No.25 and No. 22 ranking in the Coaches Poll and AP Poll, respectively? By the way, I loved "Meat Market"
I do. They should be in the top 20. They beat both of the past two national champs and did it on the road and really tough environments. They might be the third-best team in the SEC right now given how they've played over the last six weeks.
I think Tebow's speech after the Ol' Miss loss and the impending turnaround of the Gators exemplify the qualities needed to win a Heisman...not inflated stats by playing in a defense-less Big 12.
Tebow's great and I won't diminish him it's not like the SEC is having a typically great year this season.
Who gets the rings when a team wins a championship? Do just the players and coaches on the roster get rings? Or any one involved in the football program in some capacity like an athletic director, university president, really generous booster (Phil Knight, T. Boone Pickens, etc.), staff, redshirt players, etc.?
I think it varies. I have buddies who work as administrators and have title rings for various sports. At some schools the rings players and coaches get are slightly different than the ones the support people get. I know of some boosters who also have gotten the real things.
If OU had beaten Texas Tech by only 10-14 points, would the media's logic still focus on only a two team race.
Good question... I doubt it.
Realistically, would a Utah, Ball St or Boise St make it through the ACC/SEC/Big 12 with less than 2 or 3 losses? I'm not disputing that for 1 game they could stand toe to toe, but over the course of a season I don't see them hanging on. Your thoughts.
I think they'd probably lose two games at least.
I have insider info for you Bruce...Percy is playing and you can bet that we will use him early and often...don't tell Nick though
Thanks.. I'm sure Saban is planning on him playing too.
Do you think the state of Texas has enough teams to make a BCS Conference?
Yep.. just like the old SWC days.
If Charlie Weis is out at Notre Dame, any truth to the rumor that Urban Meyer might jump ship?
I'll believe it when I see it. I never thought Meyer was an NFL guy though, but who knows.
What does Florida need to do on defense to beat Alabama?
Stop the run.
Am I in Washington interviewing for the Husky job?
Haha.. I'll tell you in about 20 minutes when I get off this chat.
Do you think I should stay for another title run or enter the NFL Draft?
Hard to tell anyone to leave college early but I think Harvin could make a lot of money after this season from the NFL.
Do you think Bobby Bowden hangs it up this offseason?
Nope. Not yet.
Anyone who has been paying attention knows that the SEC is having a down year. Will we see more of the same next season?
Maybe.. depends on whether some of those third-year stars leave for the NFL.. Andre Smith, Tebow, Harvin the two at UGA. Greg Hardy
i've heard that The Hat has talked to John Chavis about taking over as LSU's DC. Also heard that Ed Orgeron may be in line to join the staff as well as recruiting coordinator and D-line coach. your thoughts on that?
Yeah, that would be interesting. I heard Orgeron grew up as a Tiger fan.
As far as a Utah, Ball St. or Boise..or a MWC team for that matter, wouldn't 2 losses in the ACC put them as the #1 team in that conference? Thus, they would get a BCS bid from that conference. Some of your chatters never seem to get the point. Thus, the only reason that Utah at 12-0 is simply going to "a" BCS bowl and not the National Championship. Am I right?
Obviously it depends if it's two losses or three losses. I don't think Ball State is better than 7-5 in the ACC. Their best wins are against a bad Indiana team and over a Navy club that even lost to Notre Dame... I put Utah and Boise in a different group.
I'm scared of possibly playing an actual defense in the NC game. Any advice?
Funny, you seemed to do OK against TCU and they have supposedly a really nasty defense.
Will the Kansas Jayhawks play in a BCS Bowl game this year?
How many Heisman Trophies are given out? It seems like the give one to the player and another one for the player?s university.
That is correct.
how does psu matchup with usc ?
Not well. USC has too many athletes on D.
Well if you say Bobby Bowden is coming back, what about D.C. Mickey Andrews? You hear his press conference after the UF loss? Sounds like he's done.
I wouldn't be surprised if he left.
Bruce, I am curious for your insight. I'm trying to decide on whether or not to let Coach Tuberville go, your thoughts?
Hold on to him.
Bruce- any chance Fulmer goes to ND if they let go of Weis or is Kelly the more likely candidate?
Wow. I don't think so.
Who do you think the Coach of the Year award should go to?
I just wrote about this yesterday in my blog.. Saban over Chris Petersen.
Any chance we can get Urban Meyer?
Maybe ..you should've just thrown all that money at him instead of Weis. That'll go down as one of the worst deals in the history of sports.
Ugh.. have the TV on and can't believe I'm listening to more babble about Plaxico. Must Mute this...
Yep, worry about Boston College and Cincy getting less than 2-3 losses. How embarrassing is it when Cincy losses to Hawaii and goes to a BCS bowl unranked?
we shall see.
What do you think of the job Paul Johnson has done?
NO, BRUCE. The worst deal in the history of sports is the Hershel Walker Trade.
There's also a Lou Brock trade that people talk about, although the money down the toilet with this one is pretty staggering.
I'm going to win the SEC next year???
Nope. Don't see it.
What should we do with Rich Rodriguez?
Be patient. Look back at every other place he's been. Bad first year and then the wins start to come.
Is there a better D coordinator than my paisan Frank Spaziani?
You're right. He's like the Italian Bud Foster. Vastly underrated.
Bruce, You still sticking by me and my "Mighty Gators" or are you (like Schalbach) going to support Saban on Saturday?
Schlabach's already gone over the wall? Hmm.. didnt know that. I'm thinking about it.
Do you see a repeat of last year's Hawaii-Georgia with whoever plays Utah?
No, not quite.. Utah is more balanced and more physical than Hawaii was.
Three more questions..
Michael from LB..making me laugh..and yes he is.
Thoughts on Carroll giving up 2 timeouts to wear red on Saturday? Dumb, right?
He could go play them with 10 men and probably beat UCLA. The Bruins are really undermanned right now.
How bad does mizzou need to beat ou for texas to make it to the bcs championship?
I think Mizzou just needs to win.
Bruce you may have not seen a lot of the kid but I thought maybe you have heard negative or positive things about him. Do you see Matt Simms reaching to his brother or even fathers success.
I actually saw a bunch of him in high school while working on Meat Market. A lot of coaches I talked to were skeptical of him back then and didn't like his mechanics at all. We'll see. Obviously his blood lines are good.
thanks for all your questions.. if I didn't get to yours, email it into my blog and I'll try and answer it there.
