Hello all. Guessing might be some questions about a little game in Detroit tonight.
Dana first off it,s good to be back and 2nd my question is how good is Lsu All of asudden nobody has put them in the rankinngs and i think we should get votes .your thoughts.answer wednesday.
Victor, I do what I'm told. It's Wednesday. I answer. I think LSU is good but they aren't ranked because they haven't really played anyone yet. Expect them to be a very good team in the SEC.
Despite the loss, the Illini surprised me with their competativeness last night. Am I getting ahead of myself thinking they can be a tourney team with Legion adding some outside punch? Can they compete with Wisky and OSU for 3rd in the Big Ten?
Eric: I was impressed with their toughness last night as well. Not sure I can go tourney team just yet but I think they'll be in the second tier of the Big 10 and a much better team this year.
Dana, What is wrong with Alabama?
Brad: Good question and I wish I had the answer. They have a few games here to get their act together but I was extremely disappointed by their showing against Oregon.
Looking past Nova's colossal match up this weekend with Houston Baptist, how do you think they will fair against the Longhorns next week in the Jimmy V?
Jon: Hey don't sleep on Houston Baptist. What is that, anyway??? going to be interesting against the Horns. Nova has the edge in the backcourt but how they handle James, Atchley and Johnson will be interesting. Being in New York gives them an edge.
Do the Duke Blue Devils have any shot at winning the national championship
Angelo: Based on what I saw last night, don't see why not. Still don't have a big man but they've got so much talent and athleticism everywhere else and I was stunned and impressed by their defense and rebounding against Purdue. Hummel and Moore are still missing.
Can Wake Forest be that 3rd team in the ACC this year, or will the experience of a team like Clemson or Miami make them better?
I like Wake, to be honest. Without McClinton last night, you could see some issues with Miami.
Do you see my Orange sticking around in the top 25?
Steve: I do. I'm a big believer in Cuse this year. They're in a monster league but the Big East is always about great guard play and Syracuse has it in bunches.
Dana who do you have tonight. The Tar heels or the mighty michigan state spartans?
Kumani: I think it will be a better game than people anticipate. Clearly Allen and Summers have to handle Lawson and Ellington. And there's the Hansbrough/Suton question to answer. I'm going w/ Heels to win but I think this could be their first legit test.
How do you see UAB faring the rest of the way? They lost 2 in NY, but were in position to win both (even vs OU). Tourney team?
Mark: They played pretty well against OU and I give them the caveat against BC, with no Delaney. Think this is a tough team. Very athletic and fast. I picked them to win the C-USA this year, much to the chagrin of my many friends in Memphis. I'll stick with it.
A-10 is looking like it has 2 strong teams this year, at least (Dayton, Xavier). Are they off your radar, or are you able to comment about them?
David: I live in Philly, so the A10 is always on my radar. Agree with you that Dayton and Xavier are cream of the crop, but I'm not giving up on Temple. They add a great point guard next month from Argentina. Think it's a good league this year. St. Joe's looks decent; URI w/ Baron will always be in a game.
Dana, do you anticipate Oregon being this inconsistent all season? They have the talent, although lots of them are young (frosh/soph).
Will: I do think this is the price you pay with young players. That said, the Pac 10 this year isn't lights out good so they'll have wiggle room to get better.
Do you see Minnesota moving up faster than expected?
Craig: Liked the win last night. Not sure how good Virginia is but still it was a good win. I think Tubby is turning things around pretty quickly there. Don't sleep on Cornell on Saturday, though. For real.
Why isn't PSU's Talor Battle getting any pub? He is at 20pts 7rebs 4-5 ast per game, and PSU looks to contend in the Big 10 this year.
Jason: Talor has been downright impressive. He's not getting pub because Penn State isn't getting pub. They're better, a lot better with him and Cormley. Not ready to say they're contenders in the Big 10 but they will move up the rankings.
Dana, You said that NOtre Dame would hang with UNC and they didn't. Even if Harangody was not sick they still would have won by 20. UNC will do the same to the Spartans. Mark it down.
Dan: OK. Marked and noted.
State Bragging rights Sat, Wisco at Marquette. Hang one for the Badgers?
Justin: Very good game, agreed. Marquette needs a win after getting shellacked by Dayton. Going to give the edge to the Bo Ryans
Who do you see as the best individual talent out there this year? Any breakouts?
Don: Three obvious individual talents: Blake Griffin, Steph Curry and Tyler Hansbrough, when he's healthy.
Dana, who do you like for National Player of the Year so far? Hansbrough? Griffin? Curry? Anyone else that might have caught ur eye??
Charlotte: I had Steph Curry to start and haven't seen anything to change my mind. Though Blake Griffin is sickeningly talented...
UCLA or Texas?
Dan: Should be a good game. Abrams is going to have his hands full in this one, so I'm going UCLA.
Dana, if UConn, Pitt, or Gonzaga were to play UNC this year on a neutral floor do you think either of these teams would have a legitimate shot at beating the heels?
No one is giving MSU a shot tonight to win because of chemistry problems, injuries, and UNC's demolition of its opponents. MSU's mantra is anyone, anytime, anywhere. If they pull this game off, what would it do for there confidence heading into big ten season?
Pat: Sure I do. Look, Carolina is the best team with the most talent but they aren't invincible. Saw UConn this week. Wow. Gonzaga was very impressive in Orlando and Pitt's defense can frustrate the bejesus out of anyone.
How the heck can we get away with holding the players who transferred from Indiana hostage, not deciding if they can play and we are one month into the season? I think we all expect them to be inelgible, but the fact that the NCAA has done this to the kids is unacceptable.
NCAA: No doubt there should be answers and no idea why there isn't one yet. To me ought to be a time limit of some sort. That said, I'd be stunned if any of those guys got their waivers
Dana - do you still think highly of Louisville as National Champs? This after the recent loss to WKU.
David: I do. That was some seriously awful guard play, no doubt and a concern because Samardo is going to get double teamed a whole bunch. But Western was a Sweet 16 team a year ago and Slaughter is a good player. No excuse, agreed. But I also know that Louisville always seems to take one on the chin early and then Pitino never ever lets them forget they did.
What do you think about the Tennessee Vols this year?
Tom: Far and away the best team in the SEC. Anxious to see them here in a few weeks against Temple.
Can Kentucky make a Final Four run this year?
Greg: Don't see it, no.
Dana BOLD pick by choosing UCLA... I think we have a long way to go but if we can pull the win in Texas... I would be pleasantly surprised!
Dan: Agree but I hate picking chalk ALL the time. And really the guards are good.
dana who do you have tonight the tar heels or the mighty michigan state spartans? and who is the better naismith canidate OU's Blake Grffin or UNC's Tyler Hansbrough?
Kumani: I have the Heels but in a close game. As for Hansbrough and Griffin, it's hard to debate until Hansbrough is healthy and in every game.
Another year, another Big 12 player tearing it up. Where do you put Blake Griffen among Durant and Beasley?
Was thinking that in New York. Here's what I like about Griffin more than Beasley. he doesn't take a play off. Ever. Beasley sometimes lost focus when the play wasn't coming his way. But the differences between all 3 are miniscule.
What are your thoughts on URI? They have given Duke its toughest test so far and that was in Cameron, I think they will be the surprise of the A10 this year, agree?
Zach: Agreed. They also gave Villanova a good run for a while there. Jimmy Baron makes them a threat every time he steps on the court.
Kyle McAlarney, one of the best 3 point shooters I have ever seen. You think he has a shot at the NBA, being 6ft tops?
Matthew: The NBA would do itself a favor to add a few really good shooters to the mix. Never sure how they think. They're so big on upside, potential and tend to overlook one basic premise: can the kid play. If he gets a chance, he could be a nicce addition for a team as a sniper off the bench.
Dana - please comment. Forget the ACC/B10 challenge. Year after year the ACC beats the Big Ten teams. Why not change it to the Big East/ACC challenge?
Jeff: Wow, can you imagine those bloodbaths? Would be awesome but the Big East is now partnered with the SEC in a much more watered down way so not going to happen. Wish it would, though!
How far do you see Arizona going with their big three or Nic Wise, Chase Budinger, and Jordan Hill?
Zach: They certainly have NCAA Tourney talent and the league isn't great. If they can get through all the nonsense - which seems to be happening - they could maybe claw their way for the 25th straight time.
Are the Gators headed back to the tournament this year? Tough loss to Cuse, but Calathes and Tyus have been fun to watch so far this year.
Brian: I'm not entirely sold yet on the Gators. They'ree good but still need to convince me they're tourney good.
how do you feel about Johnny Flynn?
Steve: He's phenomenal. Probably the best guard in the Big East and that's saying a lot.
Dana Are the young Buckeyes a tournament team this year? They seem pretty inconsistent offensively and are having alot of problems on the boards.
John: Looked decent against Miami, though hard to know what to think of that without McClinton. Not sure if they're good enough yet this year.
Dana, what do you think of the new 3 point line, is it a success or a failure?
Chris: To me, it's a non-factor. Seems to me the good shooters are having no problem with it and if it makes the bad shooters think twice about taking a 3, I'm all for that.
dana, what is your opinion of conference strength...is big east the best (#1) acc#2 big12#3???
John: Big East by far and away the best. I think affter that I have to go ACC. They have more potentially very good teams than the Big 12. SEC way down. Pac 10 eh. Big 10 intriguing.
Dana, I know you're familiar with Louisville and Samardo Samuels. First can you explain why they lost and if it's reason to be concerned (national champions don't lose to WKU their third game of the year) and if there is reason to be concerned with Samuels and his inability to score when double teamed by two walk ons?
He can't shoot if the guards can't get him the ball. He also needs them to scoree to be a legit threat. Sosa and McGee were 0 for 13 so I have a hard time pinning this one on Samardo
Last time i checked the Big 10/ACC challenge was tied 3-3. Almost every top B10 team is very young. Do you think the Big 10 is closing the gap.
Tyler: Was talking about that with a colleague last night. would seem that the ACC will have in all of teh games tonight, so I'm not sure. Definitely the middle and bottom of the pack teams seem to be improving in the Big 10
What's going on in Tallahassee this season? a great recruiting class comes into FSU and they are undefeated, but with a few real nailbiters in there. How good are wins against Cincy and Cal? No early season TV down here until tonight's game but I'm perplexed by my 7-0 Noles. Sort this out for me...
Kenneth: Wish I could, I'm perplexed annually by the Noles. Cincy is a decent win, not great. I always feel like they ought to be better than they are.
Kenneth: Wish I could, I'm perplexed annually by the Noles. Cincy is a decent win, not great. I always feel like they ought to be better than they are.
Dana, do you honestly believe Louisville is going to be National Champs or is it just, as you say "hate picking chalk ALL the time"?
Chris: No, I honestly believe that.
I just heard TUBS got fired any one who do they go after now?!?!
Kyle: Heard that too. No answers on this chat, I'm afraid. Football peeps ought to know, though.
who will win tonight michigan or maryland
Devin: I like Maryland. THey have more talent
Who do like this Saturday in the NC State/Davidson game? The Pack (namely Mcauley and Costner) seem to be alot better without Hickson clogging all the touches. Also, Courtney Fells should be able to disrupt Curry a little bit. Thoughts?
Ryan: I agree NC State is a lot better w/o Hickson, which shouldn't be the case but it is. Fells is tough but Curry has faced tougher and handled it. Should be a good game
what two teams would u like to see each other play.
shawn: Is it too early to call for Duke-Carolina? If so... UConn and Carolina
So what's your take on the SlapJack incident that took place last night?
John Boy: The blood did him in. No arguing it happened when the dude is bleeding. Was it a criminal punch? no. But it was stupid and unnecessary and McClinton is going to get a TON of attention this year so he needs to cool his heels.
Goran Suton is playing? Is this info just out???? Thought he was for sure held out tonight.
Corn: No confirmation here on that. Did just see that Jordan Crawford and Eli Holman were denied waivers, for those asking bout that though.
USC barely got by Univ. of San Fran. - what is going on?
Brian: ONe of the 7 wonders of the world. No clue. They looked entirely listless, disinterested and disconnected in Puerto Rico.
How good do you think the Missouri Tigers are? I've heard references to the tournament with them and I just don't see where that's coming from?
Ken: Saw them in Puerto Rico. Really like Carroll and Lyons and they play very gooo defense. I'd say their a longshot right now but not at all out of the equatioin.
Dana, what freshman do you see as having the biggest impact this year?
Steve: Would have said Samardo Samuels til last week. I think there are a few who will be very important to their teams success - Tyreke Evans at Memphis; Willie Warren at Oklahoma. And watch out for Seth Curry, from the most underrecruited family in college basketball.
You said Tennessee is far and away the best in the SEC. Who else gets in the NCAA tournament from the SEC. Also, you wrote that article about Billy Gillispie, do you think he did something wrong?
Jeff: hard league for me to pinpoint right now. There are a few teams who should/could be in - Kentucky, LSU, Florida. But none are wowing me just yet. As for Gillispie, it's not wrong by the letter of the NCAA rulebook but I think it's unethical. He's not alone. Let me make that clear before the commonwealth floods my mailbox. He is not at all alone.
Dana, how crippling are the two last-second losses to Xavier and Wisconsin for the Hokey's NCAA Tourney hopes?
Sheree: NOt crippling at all. For starters, it's early. The Xavier loss was as fluky as fluky can be. Plus both Xavier and Wisconsin will be tourney teams. THose aren't bad losses.
Is Kansas a guaranteed tournament team?
Justin: Nothing is guaranteed but barring some insanity, they're in.
Being in the midst of Jayhawk country I get sick of all of the KU talk. Especially after last years loss to them, so amuse me a little and tell me what you really think of my beloved TARHEELS!
Jeff: Oh come on, it's like telling Brad Pitt he's handsome. It must get old. They're ridiculously talented and deep, far and away the most loaded team in the country
Dana, what are your thoughts on Kansas so far this year? They seem ahead of schedule.
Adam: I agree. Wasn't sure they'd be as good as everyone expected but they're playing very well. Sherron Collins needs to shoot a little less but they are ahead of schedule, yes.
Alright everyone, gotta finish up a story for later this week. Enjoy the games tonight.
