Hey everyone, let's get started.
Bill, I appreciate all the work you've been putting in duirng what has been a bad year for the AFC West as a whole. A question about the Chiefs: Has Pat Surtain really been battling inuries to the extent that they have been keeping him out of so many games, or has the team's struggles and his demotion in favor of rookies like Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr led to him basically sitting back and collecting a paycheck until he can move on at the end of the season?
The short answer, Tim, I think is the Chiefs are very interested in seeing what Carr and Flowers can do. They are the future in Kansas CIty.
Bill, you gotta think Denver has a chance to dominate this division for the next few years with all the strong drafts the last few year...if they can add a couple more pieces on defense and SD's window closing, it could be a great run on the horizon...
We'll see. The Broncos aren't there yet. They are on their way but they are benfitting from a bad division. There are some young teams in this division and San Diego isn't dead yet. It's premature to say Denver will dominate for the next several years.
Hi Bill. I know playoffs are about stopping the run and a pass rush, that being said, with our offense, do you think Denver can pull off an upset or two, it would be great experience for Cutler going forward...
Yes, if Cutler doesn't make mistakes. Remember, if Denver makes it, it will host a playoff game. It could win a game. But no turnovers is the key.
Bill, Admittedly, I am a little biased here, but if the Broncos play like they did against the Jets, they would be a tough out in the playoffs. People rip their defense, but it hasn't been that bad the past month. The offense has been inconsistent.
Yes, but if they play like they did at home against the Raiders, they will bounced hard.
Clayton menetioned in his mailbag today that Ryan is the best prospect since Manning, and Best QB to come out since Big B... did he forget about Rivers/Cutler ??
I think John's reasoning there is that Ryan is excelling as a rookie. Rivers and Cutler didn't. I'll tell you what, I saw Ryan in San Diego on Sunday. He's the goods.
Hi Bill, I'm going to the game tonight. I've been a chargers fan for 30 years and want to see the front office make sound decisions. From what I am hearing Norv is coming back next year. Why can't AJ Smith see that the team has gone from a power football...physical team...to a finesse team. It kills us charger fans to see this team fall so far so fast. Is AJ's ego not allowing him to recognize that his decision to bring Norv in was made for the wrong reasons...and how short of a leash will Norv be on next year? Signed, Concerned San Diego Fan
I'd say Turner will be on a very short leash next season. He has to be, doesn't he? Enjoy the game and be safe.
Bill, I have to ask the question on everybody's mind: Is LT done? Not meaning he can't get 1000 yards again, but are his days of being a 100 yard/15TD RB done?
Sorry, computer glitch. Anyway, I don't think LT is done. he isn't getting much blocking. But he will be 30 next season so the end is approaching.
GO RAIDERS!!! Did we just say that?
Isn't is funny how this thing works? All of Denver will be rooting for Oakland tonight. Good stuff.
Bill, I feel sorry for the Chargers, but I would love to see them have another tough season. I truly believe Marty could've led them to the promise land, and the GM deserves everything he's getting right now.
It;s hard to argue against what you are saying at this point.
Ryan would be nothing without Michael "the Burner" Turner, Atlanta's off season acquisition of Turner has made Ryan's transition easy.
Yes, Turner has been good for the Falcons. They are going good things in Atlanta.
Bill, As a Raider fan, should I even care anymore as long as Al Davis is calling the shots?
Sure, you are a fan. Hey, there's only 16 of these every year. You have to enjoy it no matter hwo frustrating things get.
TRUE OR FALSE: NORV TURNER WILL BE THE CHARGERS HEADCOACH NEXT SEASON?
If you listen to the Chargers' brass, true. If you listen to logic ...
And the winner in Portis for Champ Bailey trade is ___?
Truly? both teams.
could you see denver making a playoff run? and is san diego mathematically done?
San Diego is not officially done. Denver's magic number is two.
This chat is frikin impossible to find. When I click on "Let's chat" it takes me to a comments page. I can't find links anywhere on the Blog hom page either. I coul dbe missing something but I end up having to google the chat every week and work my way backwards. anyway we can get a clean link on the blog page so we don't miss the first half of the chat? Keep up the good work.
Congrats you found it. Question, Patrick?
How does one think the Chargers window is closing? I'm pretty sure they have one of the youngest rosters in the NFL
I don't think their window is closing, either. But LT is getting older so that is a concern.
I heard Shawne Merriman wants a new contract before the 2009 season starts. And If he dont get a extension he said he would test the market? I know the Chargers can franchise him aftef 2009! But do you think they sign him to a new deal?
I don't think he will get one before next season. He needs to show he can be a dominant player after his knee surgery. If he signed before the season, he wouldn't get market value.
Denver would host a playoff game? I thought they changed the rules so the wildcard would host the playoff game if they had a better record.
Division winners host playoff games.
Bill, how much are the Chargers missing Lorenzo Neal now? Do they try and get another good lead blocking back in the offseason?
I think they do miss him. That was a decision the Chargers might regret.
Would you consider Ryan Clady as the best Left Tackle in football even though he is a rookie? he is very very very impressive for a rookie.
He'd say he's top 5-8. It's a very good league for left tackles these days. But it is very impressive for a rookie to be an instant elite player. Clady is a stone cold stud.
Any more word on who's next in Oakland? Obviously Cable is not the guy.
Jim Fassel? Dennis Green?
the raider's still have Arman shields, should they try and fill the much needed Outside linebacker spot since they never filled it and sam williams is out the door this year or take Brian Crushing or Jeremy Maclin in the draft?
The Raiders have many needs: WR, OL, DE, LB, S.
Who ya got: Cowboys or Stillers?
Tough one, Mr. Hoboken (love that town), I'll go with the Steelers.
What do you see as Denver's options for the cornerback opposite Champ. I think Denver will seriously consider trading/releasing Bly. Do you see that happening in the near future?
I wouldn't be surprised. But Bly has been decent with Bailey is out. The Broncos are 3-2 without Bailey.
bill, you have done great reporting! why dont the raiders drop fargas and let mcfadden run you think they should trade fargas for picks during the offseason?
All my fellow Chiefs fans think Herm and Carl should be ran straight out of town. I think Herm inherited an angent, patchwork tem of veterans that just went 10-6. He knew they were old but how can you blow up a 10-6 team? I think this is his first REAL team. I think he gets 2 more years. Am I crazy?
Two years? You may be crazy. I say give him next year and let him try to win.
Bill, Whats the deal with Tim Crowder not playing? I liked him as a rookie? is he hurt ? did pretty good for a rookie in my opinion?
I'm with you. He was good last season. He's been a major dissapointment. Let's fce it, that is not the Purple People Eaters lineup he can't crack.
do you give the Dolphins, the surprise team of the year?
Dolphins. Jets. Falcons. They all been really good.
What is wrong with the Oakland Raiders ?
You got an hour?
Do you think that it is fair that you have to cover the worst division in football?
I may have to have a meeting with Mike Sando on that one. Mike, of course, is our NFC West blogger. It's a real horse race, I'll tell you that.
Bill, great job this year. If San Diego finishes with 5 or 6 wins - very possible the way they've been playing - do you see any chance of them getting Crabtree in the draft? Maybe it's time to start looking towards next year...
It will take a lot fellow wins than that to secure Crabtree.
Do you see Peyton Hillis playing a Dallas Clark type roll for the Broncos next year? This kid has talent and lead Arkansas in receiving his senior year so you know he can catch. Also, will Denver draft another back next year?
You are very astute, Ryan. NFL types have said that very same thing.
Eddie Royal or DeSean Jackson? (and don't say both)
Hey - tell Mike Sando that as of now, the AFC West is better than the NFC West. Check the records. The AFC West has a 1 game lead right now!
Take that, Sando.
It has been a few weeks now. Do you think Thigpen is the real deal?
I like him. I really do. I think the Chiefs should address other issues next season and give Thigpen a full year. If he fails then get the QB in 2010.
Bill, is Nnamdi Asomugha a free agent after this season? If so, do you think the Broncos can make a serious push at acquiring him (which, of course, will depend on whether or not the Broncos release Bly and if the Raiders don't put a franchise tag on Asomugha)?
He is a free agent. But expect Oakland to tag him.
Bill, say Denver gets Indy in Denver in Round 1. Do you think Denver can beat Manning's Colts?
If they don't turn over the ball and they force the Colts into turning vevr the ball.
any def. free agents you see coming to kc at the end of the season?
I could see them looking into Peppers.
Of the many excellent offseason moves the Raiders made, which was most awesome -- Walker, Harris, or Hall?
Walker and Hall were hall of fame moves.
Bill, Could Chad Jackson be the number 2 in Denver when Stokley is gone. and Royal at the slot. i liked his speed vs the jets
No, they love Royal.
Any chance Haynesworth leaves Tennessee and goes to the Broncos or anyone else for that matter?
Some insiders think Hayneworth could be a Bronco. I could see it.
Do I give Fargas a shot tonight or do I play willie parker against the cowboys
Fargas. But you are in trouble if you need my help.
How bout the Chiefs looking at some young bargain free-agents like Considine and Kevin Burnett. At worst, they would be solid special teams guys.
The Chiefs have so many needs. They could use some bargain players, sure.
Thoughts on Derrick Johnson's move to middle linebacker.
Very interesting. I think it a move where if it doesn't work, Johnson could be on his way out.
Is Royal really as humble and nice as what I read about him? It seems like the standard prima donna requirement of being a WR skipped him
I've only met him once but he was a very nice kid. I hear great things about him.
Any chance the raiders will be a winning franchise in the next year or two?
I thought they could win 7-8 games this season so I am going to reserve judgement.
I thought they could win 7-8 games this season so I am going to reserve judgement.
hey bill do you think Plaxico will be a Giant in 2009?
No. Do you?
Denver has a better chance at beating Baltimore or Indy in the playoffs?
You say you like Thigpen but should the Chiefs continue with the spread offense? I fear that it might not be good in January (assuming the Chiefs someday get there) when you need to run the ball generally.
If Thigpen is the QB, they need to use the spread. That's his comfort zone. If he's the guy, they'd have the entire offseason to plan accordingly.
hey bill I heard you where online awnsering questions. first off I want to say you do a outstanding job reporting on the AFC West and thank you. i want your opinion on tonights game Raiders Vs Chargers, now a smart coach would start Mcfadden to give the raiders a fair chance to win, but if he is a running back why keep playing him at receiver to draw penalty flags and risk injury shouldnt the trick plays stop? thanks for your time.
Thanks, brother. Yes, the trick plays need to stop. Rght now. I am very much with you on McFadden. Kid was the No. 4 overall pick. Use him.
AFC Champ, NFC Champ and Super Bowl champ???
Right now? Steelers. Giants. Giants.
Hey guys, great hour as usual. Thanks for your time. Enjoy tonight's game and Sunday's action. Talk to you next week.
