Hello, MMA Nation! Great to be back with you after a week off. Hope everyone had a great holiday. As usual, a ton to get to, including WEC 37, as well as The Ultimate Fighter semifinals from last night. Fire away...
It's cool to swear, right?
Passionate people cuss. That's what I'm told.
Jon, Love MMA Live! Haven't missed an episode. Is Miguel Torres on your list of Top 10 P4P fighters in the world? If not, why?
Absolutely, Wyatt. He not only wins, but dominates. A very complete fighter...just wish he fought in a more competitive/compelling division.
How do you get ready a day before a fight?
I am not a fighter, so it's pretty easy. Go for a run, eat whatever I want, and then watch the fight.
rampage or silva?
A bit early for UFC 92 predictions. But sources tell me Rampage looks off-the-charts good. So there's an inkling as to where I am leaning.
deigo sanchez is finally moving down to 155lbs according to cagetoday, should they give him someone tough like sean sherk or a easier fight to get his feet wet?
I would think Diego Sanchez would have to work his way up to fight a top contender. But he's a big name, so perhaps he would get one of the top 3-4 guys right off the bat. Maybe Gray Maynard or Tyson Griffin.
Hi Jon, after last night PLEASE tell me we have seen the last of Junie in the UFC?
I doubt it, Leo. There are rumors that he will be fighting at The Ultimate Fighter finale on Dec. 13th. At least Efrain put him firmly in his place.
Any truth to the rumors that I have read that the winner of the rampage silva fight will get the next title shot at 205, and the looser will get Anderson Silva at 205?
I certainly think Rampage would be in line for a title shot with a victory. If it weren't for his traffic episode, he might've gotten an immediate rematch with Forrest. As for the loser fighting Anderson Silva, it's a possibility, but not set in stone.
Who do u consider the best fighter 2 have apeared on the ulta. fighter series?
A great question, and a lot of great candidates. Right now, I think you'd have to say Forrest Griffin. Rashad Evans perhaps? There's also this guy Kenny Florian...
BJ or GSP
Again, way too early for UFC 94 predictions. But forced to pick, GSP.
Are there any reasonable challenges for Anderson Silva for February? Keith Jardine seems logical but I don't think he fits the megafight bill. I don't know if anyone from the UFC92 card will recover in time for February....thoughts?
We might be looking at a James Irvin/Patrick Cote-type opponent once more for The Spider, before (hopefully) a mega-fight against St. Pierre. Of course, that is contingent upon GSP getting through BJ Penn. I'm not all that enamored with a Silva-Jardine fight, either.
With all the work Dana White does, do you ever see him burning out?
It's a good question, Brian. Last time I talked to Dana (at UFC 91), I told him I will never complain about lack of sleep, given his schedule. I will say, though, that Dana has a great staff, a personal assistant, and keeps himself in great shape.
Will the ufc ever be able to set up a fight with Fedor? and is the slice man done
I don't forsee a scenario whereby Fedor Emelianenko fights under the UFC banner. He seems to be the only mixed martial artist on the planet that doesn't yearn to fight in the UFC. As for Kimbo Slice, I said from the moment EliteXC collapsed that we would end up in Japan, and I stand by that forecast.
Jon - please excuse my tardiness - Alvarez/Aoki. Fight of the year written all over it right? And personally, this may put in jepordy a chance to see him in Jersey in Feb, but oh well
Yeah, Rob. Everyone is jacked up for the Alvarez-Aoki fight on New Year's Eve. Some good banter between Florian and McNeil on the show today about that fight. As for his Extreme Challenge appearance in NJ, I would say it is very much in jeopardy now.
Would you say that in the last couple months or so that MMA has become less popular than when it first jumped into the limelight?
No. It is the fastest growing sport in the United States, and the world. The chat room isn't the forum for me to go into all the reasons why. But from the PPV buys, to the cult-like following it has, to the humongous Internet presence, MMA continues to experience an explosion.
Hey Johnathan Anik, my man! Why do you think UFC cut loose Franklin's homeboy Sokoudjou? I thought he brought a fresh style to the octagon.
Cowboy Ron is back. Not sure if we're glad to have him, but he's back. In all seriousness, the Sokoudjou release was a bit surprising. But the UFC wants to keep its total # of fighters close to 180. And they can't keep everyone. If you lose a couple fights, you are, more often than not, shown the door.
what about nate marquardt in a rematch again anderson? thats i fight i really wouldnt mind seeing considering nate was winning the first round until he got caught nate wants that fight and he isnt rumored to be a coach for the 9th season of the ultimate fighter
I would like to see Marquardt and Dan Henderson both get another shot at Anderson Silva. I would also like to see Demain Maia against Silva, and the GSP mega-fight as well.
Hey, aren't you the host of ScoreCenter too?
Yes, Beano. I also host ScoreCenter on ESPN Mobile TV. Thanks for watching.
Bloodyelbows.com had Dana White quoted as saying that after Anderson Silva retires Machida will take over as the company's best Pound for Pound fighter. You agree?
No, I don't agree.
Is Miguel Torres the real deal?
Does a bear **** in the woods? Absolutely.
What is happening with Jon Fitch? He went 5 with GSP, lost, but did go the distance.
He will fight Akihiro Gono at UFC 94.
Do you think Sean Avery could make it in the octagon? He's pretty physical on the ice and has the gift of trash talking but I'm not sure he'd want to do anything to chance that pretty face of his...
Hahaha...Not sure he has any other fight skills other than the mouth. A decent striker, I guess.
Jons, can'ts forget to mention our Nordic hero Martin Kampmann!!!! He is one more fight away from headlining a PPV card for the uFC!!! You heard it right homes!
Strongly disagree, Alvann. But we'll give you the plug, and we will all be watching his welterweight debut at UFC 93.
When will Gina Carano's next fight be
Hard to say, Jeff. The Pro Elite/Elite XC situation is still very much up in the air. My best guess would be May of 2009, but that could even be optimistic.
Jon, any predictions on who will win the Ultimate Fighter Contracts? I would imagine Phillipe and Vinicius are the favorites, especially Vinicius I don't see how Bader fighting style dosn't get him caught in a submission.
Yeah, Leo. I think Bader will get submitted by Vinny, who looked great once again last night. But the 155-lb. fight between Ephrain and Phillipe Nover should be very competitive.
Why don't I get to have my own chat?
You gotta be kidding me, bro. I ask you to do this thing every week. But you're too busy making Prada appearances, I guess. Or training or something.
Jon, you busted out early last week before I got a chance to give you my nickanme for you. Jon Anik-conda choke. It's relevant and it fits!! How long do you forsee Miguel Torres remaining at 135? Rumor has it that he used to fight guys much heavier than him in unsactioned matches. 145 or 155 a possibility for him?
Hey, Joe. I think after 1-2 more title defenses, Torres needs to move up. With all due respect to Brian Bowles, does anyone really want to see that fight. I'd be very curious to see how'd he fare against some of the best featherweights and lightweights out there. We are efforting to have Torres in Bristol next week, and we'll be sure to ask him.
k-flo u should have ur own chat ur awesome
Just a few tidbits to nibble on - Junie is on the televised portion of the TUF Finale (against Dave Kaplan) and Sokoudjou is not "Franklin's boy". That guy must have been thinking of Jorge Gurgel who was ALSO released. Soko trains with Dan Henderson at Team Quest.
Thanks, Bren. But the guy didn't mean Rich Franklin's boy. He was talking about Franklin McNeil.
If you could make one dream match of the best fighters of today. who would it be. mine is GSP vs A. Silva.
Mine too. Although I still am curious to see Fedor-Couture.
FYI, confirmed from the UFC website, Junie vs. Dave Kaplan at the TUF finale.
hey what's up I know Dana white talks crap about Fedor saying he's not the top heavyweight but we all know that's false. Do you really think the ufc has a fighter capable of beating Fedor because I don't think they do and I believe that Dana not signing Fedor is a huge mistake and do u think he will ever be able to sign Fedor? Thanx.
I think Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is the only UFC heavyweight who'd have a great chance to beat Fedor. Lesnar? Soon, but not yet. And Dana has made legitimate efforts in the past to sign Fedor, and has offered him big money. But Fedor doesn't like the exclusivity that lies in the UFC contracts. He likes to be able to do his own thing.
Chael Sonnen recently called out Anderson Silva. Why give more motivation to a guy who completely out classes you in every area of mma except for probably wrestling? Whats the expression try not to wake a sleeping giant?
See, I think more fighters should call out the champions. In boxing, Ricky Hatton shouldn't even share a ring with Floyd Mayweather. But, Hatton called Floyd out, and got the fight. He got destroyed, but he made a ton of money. I agree that Sonnen couldn't touch Silva, but I don't have a problem with the call-out.
Hey, what's will all the entries in the chat today saying "via mobile"??? Is there some kind of mobile device or website that we can get our MMA fix from?
As far as I know, the chat link has been posted today to the ESPN Mobile phones. And the response has been great. Thanks!
Jon, any chance I can get you to do an interview with me for a website? The fans need more than just an hour chat each week!!
Sure thing, Joe. Just send me an e-mail at email@example.com.
Doens't anybody pay attention to boxing anymore?
You, me, and a few others. But I don't pay as close attention as I used to. Too much MMA going on, especially in December of 2008! MMA > boxing. Never thought I'd write that.
any word on who the next TUF coaches will be? and will Tito Ortiz ever be back in any ring?
Michael Bisping is one of the coaches. As for Tito, he had back surgery recently. But he's got something left, and wants to fight. So he'll land somewhere, and probably within the next 1-2 months. Before Groundhog Day, how's that?
Non MMA for a sec. Who ya got, DLH or Pacman?
Oscar by KO. Just too big.
It is always interesting to see the hard work and comraderie Nogueira has with his fighters as opposed to Frank's distant supervision. With that being said, I can't see how Mir can beat Nogueira, but this has certainly been good publicity for him.
Having a hard time finding people to pick Mir in the fight, Jason. Mir's first priority has to be cardio. If he can go 25 minutes (it's a big if), he might be okay. And I honestly believe their BJJ is a wash. Big Nog is a better striker. Looking forward to the fight. As for the reality show, Nogueira is extremely likable. But don't underestimate the role producers have in the show. Mir says he was at the house on countless occasions, and never once was it shown.
is there a possibility that the chuck liddell and Anderson silva fight might still take place?
Absolutely a possibility.
Who would win in the octagon- you or Franklin McNeil?
Me. McNeil ain't got no wind.
Is a Shamrock vs Shamrock fight the only interesting fight left for Ken? Also, do you see this happening at all?
I'm not really interested in seeing Ken Shamrock fight anyone. Frank is a different story. I think he's got plenty in the tank. Would love to see him rematch Cung Le.
how's this for a dream match: Dana vs. $kala?
Funny, albeit a bit one-sided.
Does pulver have a shot against faber in their rematch?
He lost 24 of the 25 minutes the first time they fought. I know why WEC is making the fight again, but I'm not all that excited to see it. Faber won't lose two in a row. So, no.
Did the editors also make Frank Mir act like a complete jerk on camera? I understand they could have edited out scenes where he came off as a caring coach and a genuine saint but for the most part he was shown as being a condescending jerk towards Nogueira and some of the fighters.
You are not alone in your sentiments, Bren.
Who you got in the Fight for the Troops? Koscheck, Swick?
I think Yoshida will take the fight into the third round, but Koscheck will get the W. Also expecting big things out of Mike Swick.
Jon, why the step down in competition for Faber? He already dominated Pulver for 5 rounds in June and now he has to go through him again to get a title rematch?
Leonard Garcia really does deserve the title shot against Mike Brown. But I would prefer to see Faber fight Jose Aldo, a very dangerous opponent. Bonnar and Mir both raved about him off-camera at UFC 91.
is there any shot of faber coming to the ufc after he beats pulver again.
No. He wants to get the belt back, and Faber is in no rush to move up to 155.
Hey Organic Jon Anik....Buy Or Sell that Rashad Evans is on his way to becoming a top 3 pound-for-pound fighter in UFC after he knocks out Griffin? I think your boy Franklin McNeil would stand on his head on set if that ever happened.
After talking to Keith Florian last week, I got a trainer's insight as to just how good Rashad Evans is. He's a gifted wrestler and striker...just a very complete fighter. He will give Forrest Griffin a tough fight. As for that pound-for-pound list, I'd slow your roll a bit. But maybe someday, after a few successful title defenses.
Any word on whether or not "MMA Live" will be taking another road-trip at the end of December (a la UFC 91)?
We remain hopeful. But nothing definitive yet.
Do you think De La Hoya will ever step foot in the octagon?
Maybe before an Affliction fight just to show his face. But no, Oscar will never take part in MMA. He's too handsome, and has way too much money. One of his goals now is (not kidding) to become a billionaire.
Will bobby lashley sign with the ufc?
Perhaps someday. His MMA debut is December 13th, and we'll know a little bit more about his potential after that fight.
Been swamped with work today almost missed chat. Anyways, who you got winning next week in the Finale? or are you saving that for next weeks chat?
Hi Craig. Good to have you back. I like Vinny Magalhaes to submit Ryan Bader (how could you not, after what we saw last night). As for the LW final, I am waiting to make a prediction.
Any chance Florian give MMA Live a shoutout after his next fight?
You'd like to think so, right? He told ESPN Radio's Steve Cofield that his MMA Live TV duties actually helped him relax during the week leading up to the Stevenson fight. So, we helped him, and he still gave us no love. Man...
If Rashad loses to Forrest you think he should drop down to 185?
No. He's still among the top guys at 205. Could he? That's a different question.
Hey Jon, I think Keith Florian is a strapping Brazlian-American man. Why doesn't he have the stones to step in the cage, though?
Oh, it's not about stones Roxanne. Keith would be a tremendous mixed martial artist. But he is one of the best trainers in the world, and runs his own business. And I think his wife wants to keep that mug just the way it is...
Jon - since you cover both - who would have made a better boxer? Arlovski or Mousassi?
You say 'would have'...They both could end up boxing. I'll go with Arlovski. Ridiculous hands.
Smokin' Joe Villasenor. That's all. It's just that it's 3:11, and he hasn't been mentioned yet. Now we can move on with the chat.
Jon, you've been chatting for 39 minutes and not mentioned me yet. Where's the love?
I guess I beat you to the punch.
Jon, how do you feel about Joe Silva's assistant taking over the match making duties for the WEC? I'm not a fan of Joe Silva's rematch happy match making, and we're already seeing the effects of that with Pulver/Faber 2. I think Scott Adams did a pretty good job, except for not properly promoting all of the contenders. Your thoughts?
It's a very good question, Joe. And I know I'm not telling you anything you don't know when I say this, but...mega-fights sell. It's really that simple. One of the inconvenient truths of being a combat sports fan is that there are no rankings that regulate the sport. So the match-ups that should happen from a competition standpoint oftentimes don't materialize. That said, I think Joe Silva does come up with some pretty intriguing match-ups...Franklin-Henderson upcoming at UFC 93 should be great, the Hazelett-McCrory fight at UFC 91, etc.
Any new news on the Elite XC fighters still in limbo? Mainly Nick Diaz, Robbie Lawler, Jake Shields, and Eddie Alvarez.
Only Eddie Alvarez, who evidently has the written consent that the others don't to continue his career. Sherdog reports Alvarez is expected to fight Shinya Aoki at the Dynamite!!! show on New Year's Eve in Japan.
Jon, True or False: Frank Shamrock will fight Ken Shamrock in 2009. Follow-up True or False: Fans will care. (Rhetorical answer of False).
I'll say True that they will fight. And False that fans will care. I like that question, Jonny. A meatball right down the heart.
Who do you think is the best up-and-comer in the UFC today?
What is the hardest thing about cutting weight? I was thinking about dropping five for my high school reunion. Should I just drink a lot of water, or instead try Lipozene?
Hahahahaha...the hardest thing for me is not going to McDonald's. I mean Burger King.
my brother in law and i are arguing he says no pro wrestler could be an ultimate fighter and i tell him some could be and some ultimate fighters could be pro wrestlers its just like any sport who is right
The UFC heavyweight champion of the world, Brock Lesnar, used to be a pro wrestler. That should end the argument.
Any idea of when Diego Sanchez will be fighting again? Against?
Adam, there are rumblings that Diego will down to 155. So his opponent down there could be anyone.
True or False: The prospect of Ken Shamrock fighting is just sad.
True. After what happened on 10/4, I am more than all set with Ken Shamrock. Good to have you back in the chat room, Hondo.
Buy/Sell Robbie Lawler/ Frank Shamrock, being better than Shamrock/Le?
I'll sell, only because Frank might employ a different strategy against Lawler. Frank chose to stand and exchange with Cung Le to put on a show. If Shamrock wants to beat Lawler, he'd be well-served to switch it up and show off his versatility. I am a Frank Shamrock fan, if you can't tell.
whats next for randy? i was crushed when he lost to brock so is he gonna be done now or will he go back down to 205?
According to a source, Randy Couture would like to stay at heavyweight. Perhaps he would face the loser of Mir-Nogueira.
Law And Order recently did an episode about MMA amd portrayed it in a very negative light. As an avid fan, does this misconception by the public upset you?
Much of the public remains very uneducated on the topic of Mixed Martial Arts. Football is EXPONENTIALLY more violent than MMA, and I would argue that with anyone. And I will go to my grave knowing I am right. In football, there is a violent collision on every single play.
how do you think your buddy frank mir looked with his new shaved head?
So who would you take in a Shamrock Villsenor fight?
What, you want me to pick against Villasenor? As Dana Carvey might say, not gonna do it...
you think wand will beat rampage for a third time?
Nope. But I won't go on the record with a prediction until the week before the fight.
The best draft beer in the world right now is...(think potential sponsorships!!)
Whoever wants to sponsor MMA Live...I drink liquor.
That Law and Order episode had Forrest Griffin as the star (along with Ice T's Coco!) so I guess he didn't feel it was bad publicity for the sport. Secondly, do you have anybody guest appearing on MMA Live soon?
We are hopeful that Miguel Torres will be live in-studio next week. But it's not set in stone just yet.
Are the rumors true that you are going to get married inside the Octagon at the Mohegan Sun Arena?
It's on the short list, Roxanne.
Jon - for the last chat of the year - are you going to grace us with an extended chat and allow us a forum style approach to MMA Live chat "awards of the year" (fight, fighter, ko, sub, etc.)?
As long as I'm not in Vegas bud.
when arona is ready to fight again do you think ufc will sign him right away or is dream more likely?
Seems as though Affliction is the only party to express interest thus far. But all are possibilities.
where can we send x mas gifts for you to jon ? AKA a bottle of grey goose so delish
Do you know anything about Vinicus (Sp?) on the ultimate fighter's two losses? The dude looks like the real deal, were his other losses at HW?
Not sure, Finn. According to Sherdog.com's Fight Finder, he lost a decision to George Bush (I kid you not), and by verbal submission to Raphael Davis in his last pro fight before the show. Was as surprised as you to see that 2-2 record.
true or false, BJ Penns standup is underated
True (outside of Hawaii). In Hawaii, nothing about Penn is underrated.
Get the bosses at the "worldwide leader" to give you more resources so that we can talk more about the Japanese scene.....
No. I actually think MMA Live does an admirable job covering the Japanese promotions. We cater to our audience.
Oscar or manny?
Any chance you guys do a 2009 Predictions on the last show of the year, where each of you make a bold prediction about something that will occur in 2009? I think that would be interesting
Good idea. Perhaps. Although I never get to predict anything, anyway.
Do you think Brock will stay the champ, because in the fight with randy brock was breathing hard I beleive before the first round is over, but with his strength even if he is gassed one punch could end it.
I know Lesnar looked gassed, but I don't think he was. If the fight had gone into a 4th or 5th round, he would've been able to take it. Brock is so gifted and so disciplined. His cardio will continue to improve. It'll have to against a guy like Big Nog.
Jon I have to agree about covering the Japanese scene - - great job sir!
What are you getting K-Flo and McNeil for Hanukkah?
That's a good question. Kenny has everything. Maybe I'll get Franklin a gift.
Jon, What would your enterance music be heading into the Octogon?
I've been asked this several times, and it changes constantly. All Eyez on Me (2-Pac) would be in the running. Maybe a Flight of the Conchords number. I'd have to switch it up.
What exactly caused Rampage Jackson's breakdown?
A combination of factors. The loss to Forrest had something to do with it. Then, shortly thereafter, he didn't eat for four days and only drank energy drinks. So physically he was in bad shape, and got into a delusional state. His drug tests were 100 % clean. Just a mental breakdown.
Celtics will repeat?
What are they, 18-2? Looking like a real possibility.
appearently I caused it
You think UFC 94 will come close or even beat the ppv buys for 91?
Solid question, Brian. I do think UFC 94 can do 650,000+ PPV buys, but I'm not sure it can top UFC 91.
Besides MSG where is the one place that you would want to see a major PPV at - -besides Jersey of course - -which they need to come back BTW
As a Boston native, I would love to see a UFC event at TD Banknorth Garden. But there really is nothing like a championship fight in Vegas. Also wouldn't mind going to Dublin, Ireland in January.
You said that Dana wants to keep the roster around 180... is there any chance the UFC produces more frequent cards so they can house more fighters?
Jim, the UFC schedule is already quite heavy. I just don't see it. It's hard to manage 100 fighters, never mind 180. I think 200 is the absolute max.
Is Kenny's facebook profile actually his?
Kenny does have a facebook page. But I've never checked it out. I'm not a member. But I believe MMA Live has a page.
mr anik the correct answer to rob's question is JERSEY........ only fans that pack the stands for the prelim's
The stands in Minneapolis (at UFC 87) were packed at 6PM!
Do you ever hang out with any other ESPN TV personalities?
I've tried, but they don't know who I am. I'm a big Paul Severino fan.
How will the HWs playout after Werdums loss? Where does Gonzaga fit in now? Are they destined to fight AGAIN or maybe we see one of them fight the winner of Bader/Vinny?
Benjamin, I think Gonzaga is next in line to get a title shot after the current title picture sorts itself out. Lesnar will fight the winner of Mir-Nogueira, and Gonzaga should be next. Shane Carwin would seem to be the other name in the mix. Bader and Vinny are more than likely to stay at 205.
Casual MMA viewer...but I hear a lot of talk from " Analysts" and "Experts" but from a fighters perspective, is MMA built for the long run with mass appeal or will it eventually make its way back underground?
I'm not a fighter, Jonathan. I host 'MMA Live'. So you probably don't want my opinion. But I'll give it to you anyway. MMA isn't going anywhere. I wish there was a bit more competition for the UFC. But the good news is that the UFC is an absolute monster. Fan base is enormous, and not going anywhere. MMA is on the rise.
Dany lauzon or chris horodecki at affliction in cali?
Looking forward to the fight. Huge test for 'The Upgrade'.
What is the likelihood of lesnar vs. Fedor?
Soon? Not likely at all. It's up to Fedor, if you ask me. Because Dana White won't allow Lesnar to fight him under any other promotion. Nor should he.
Alright, folks. Nice, lengthy chat today. Episode #30 of MMA Live is up for your viewing. Enjoy the show, and we'll talk again next week. Until then...-JA
