Chat with Kevin Seifert

Kevin Seifert
  (3:00 PM)

Hello everyone. Welcome back to our weekly chit-chat. So let's get chit-chatty.

Doug Pretty (Waterloo, IA)

I've noticed Benny Sapp getting more playing time the last couple games for the Vikings, and promptly causing several drive-sustaining penalties. Are they trying to get him more experience, or do you forsee his playing time diminish?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:01 PM)

Hey Doug. Sapp is playing more than he was because of the injury to Charles Gordon. The only way his playing time diminishes is if Marcus McCauley steps up, which to this point hasn't happened. Otherwise, the Vikings don't really have anyone else to play the nickel role.

Ryan (WI)

Kevin, I'm tired of hearing all the outsiders say the reason Green Bay isn't winning is because they let Favre go. Last I checked, Favre doesn't play defense. The defense has been terrible of late, giving up leads late in games so often it's become predictable.

Kevin Seifert
  (3:02 PM)

It's true, Ryan: You would have a hard time arguing that Favre could have helped this defense. But I will say this: The Packers were in complete chaos during most of training camp because of the Favre thing. I don't think you can totally discount that as one of the reasons why they're 5-8.

Do you think the Packers defense misses Atri Bigby?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:03 PM)

I don't know if they miss Bigby, Kimberly. But the way they've been hurt by his injury is that the moved Charles Woodson to safety to replace him. They took one of the NFL's best cover guy and put him in a different position. You would think they would have someone on the roster who could play a decent safety so that Woodson could stay at cornerback.

True or False, Chad Greenway deserves and will be in the pro bowl.

Kevin Seifert
  (3:04 PM)

I'm not sure about that, Dano. He has an awful lot of tackles, but with E.J. Henderson out, someone has to make the tackles on the Vikings' defense. I think Greenway has shown improvement but I don't think he's at a Pro Bowl level yet.

R. Blagojevich ( Chicago, IL)

You've been doing a great job Kev. So great, that you might want to consider going into politics. How does Senator Kevin Seifert sound? We should talk (bring money).

Kevin Seifert
  (3:06 PM)

Thanks. I was actually hoping you could help me get the Cubs for $10.

Ryan (Chicago)

Hey Kevin, love the chats. I'm confused with all the news on the Williams brothers. Will they be suspended or not?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:07 PM)

Thanks Ryan. No one knows what will happen in this situation. At some point, the federal judge in Minnesota will either make a ruling or ask for more testimony. There is no timetable for that and it could go into the offseason.

Jim (New Orleans, LA)

Hey Kevin, love the blog. I'm a devout Lions fan, and I've been having to put up with all their crap for quite some time. I've heard a lot of people calling for 0-16, but I'd really like to avoid that. Anyways, I wanted to ask what you think our chances are against Green Bay? I know we haven't won their in 17 years, but they've been struggling lately and we played them close the first meeting. (Other than the three INTs at the end.)

Kevin Seifert
  (3:08 PM)

Sorry, Jim. From what I've seen, I couldn't in good conscience pick the Lions to beat anyone this year.

dave esparza [via mobile]

What do u think the bears chancesare of winning the division?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:10 PM)

They could make a move as early as this week. There is a decent chance they beat the Saints and the Vikings lose to Arizona. If so, the teams are tied. But in that scenario, the Bears would probably have to win both of their remaining games to ensure the NFC North title. But it could be done, sure.

Jay, Towson, MD [via mobile]

I see the Titans are in the top spot of this week's power rankings... do you agree with this?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:11 PM)

That's the way I voted. Nothing fancy to it. The Titans have the best record in the NFL.

alex, lake minnetonka

Hey Kevin, happy first major snowfall day. did tarvaris show you anything that might indicate he is capable of throwing the ball down field? that 17 yard pass to wade on 3rd down was nice to see.

Kevin Seifert
  (3:12 PM)

It was nice. He's done that on occasion. The big thing is if he's improved his long accuracy. You saw how many big plays Frerotte made because he threw accurately to Berrian and Shiancoe.

Jeremy (chicago) [via mobile]

Do you think anybody else other than forte or ryan has a chance to be roy? And who would you choose right now?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:13 PM)

You could make an argument perhaps for Tennessee's Chris Johnson or Baltimore's Joe Flacco. I'm sure it will be Ryan because he's a quarterback. But when you look at how much of the Bears' offense runs through Forte, you really do need to give him a long, long look for ROY.

Asbry park NJ [via mobile]

Does jackson has a problem reading defenses?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:15 PM)

I honestly think he's pretty good at that. His problems have been more about accuracy and confidence than about knowing where to throw the ball.

Chris (Milwaukee)

Brad Childress has never really seemed like a leader to me. Did it strike you as odd that he hadn't spoken with Jackson one-on-one since he benched him in week 3? Do head coaches really do that little one-on-one communication with their players? Especially with their quarterback?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:15 PM)

I wasn't surprised. That's kind of how Childress operates. I'm sure he was talking to Frerotte pretty regularly.

Mark [via mobile]

Kevin Seifert
  (3:15 PM)

Any chance of the Lions trying to lure Floyd Reese as their new GM?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:17 PM)

John, I'm sure they would like to do that. But the only chance they'd have at Reese is if they give him total control over the organization. I'm not sure if that's the model the Lions are looking for after the Matt Millen debacle.

Carl Gerbschmidt (Elk Mound, Wisconsin)

Kevin, do you think Mike McCarthy should be fired? is he on the hot seat atleast? My Packers have been playing terrible this season, especially the secondary.

Kevin Seifert
  (3:18 PM)

Yes, the defense has been terrible, Carl. But since McCarthy is the offensive guru, he can safely make defensive coordinator Bob Sanders the scapegoat if he wants.

Jim Lyon (Sterling Heights, MI)

Kevin, do you think the Lions cutting Brian Kelly is the team looking forward to next year by using younger players?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:19 PM)

I'm guessing Kelly was pretty upset that he didn't play Sunday -- AT ALL -- against Minnesota. No idea why the Lions don't think he's worthy of at least getting on the field.

Renzo (dinkytown)

Why is it that TJack can only complete (or is vastly more comfortable with) play action passes? It was like watching weeks 1 and 2 all over again, except that it was the lions so he went 8/10. Can a passing attack succeed when it is so completely predictable?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:21 PM)

Agreed, Renzo, 100 percent. I think that's the biggest warning sign to fans who think Tarvaris is "back." He had a nice game against a bad defense, running a menu of plays we're all used to. That's why I think the Vikings are still better off with Frerotte because he's got a better chance of stretching the field.

Matt (Dinkytown, MN)

Hey Kevin, if the Giants win the next two, including Carolina, they essentially wont have anything to play for. Do you see them taking it easy or finishing strong against the Vikings?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:22 PM)

One thing I've heard is that the Giants might not want to risk injury on the Metrodome turf. That's a legitimate factor.

Kevin, in a follow up question from Ryan's uestion if you can't discount with what happened with Favre beinging traded to the Jets in the off season then do you think Ted Thompson and mike McCarthy will make any changes on the coaching staff?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:23 PM)

Sanders is definitely a possibility.

Sam Zell (chicago, IL)

The Cubs are worth much more than $10.

Kevin Seifert
  (3:23 PM)

Ok. Throw in Wrigley and I'll give you $15.

Paul (St Louis Park, MN)

Kevin- I owe you an apology. Last week you considered the Packers out of the playoff hunt and I wasn't ready to believe it. I let the mailbag know my disapproval. I was wrong and I'm sorry. What do you think Ted and Mikey will do with a 10th overall pick in the 2009 draft?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:24 PM)

Who knows, Paul. They're not out of it yet, right? As for the draft, you would think defensive line will be the top priority.

alex, lake minnetonka

which city do you like better: Minneapolis or baltimore?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:25 PM)

I actually lived closer to Washington. ... Both very different, but Minneapolis is home now.

Jim (Chicago, IL)

Kevin, assume either the Vikes or Bears win the North as the #4 seed and host Tampa Bay/Dallas/Atlanta for wildcard. Any chance of the home team winning?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:27 PM)

Actually, right now the Vikings have a decent chance at the No. 3 seed. But you would have to give the Bears a chance to win at Soldier Field in January, for sure. And the Vikings looked fairly evenly matched against Tampa Bay if they end up playing them.

Brett (Jacksonville) [via mobile]

Hey Kevin, will there ever come a day that you admit to being pro-vikings and a packers-hater? Just wondering...

Kevin Seifert
  (3:28 PM)

Funny, a lot Vikings fans think I favor the Packers at the expense of the Vikings. Oh well.

Emanuel (K-Town, TN) [via mobile]

How far do you think the Titans will go this year?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:29 PM)

I think they'll at least make it to the AFC Championship game.

Jim (Austin)

Kevin, you can't seriously be calling for "wholesale changes" to Green Bay's D? They certainly need more talent on the D-line and maybe a new D-coordinator, but they have a lot of talent on that side of the ball. It's just one of those above average injury years.

Kevin Seifert
  (3:30 PM)

They need three new defensive linemen, in my opinion. They are set at many positions, but you can't get too far without a good defensive line.

Kevin Seifert
  (3:30 PM)

I'll amend that response to say that Cullen Jenkins would count as one of those "new" starters whenever he gets healthy.

Alex (Dallas TX)

I think it's bad for the game if the Lions go 0-16. You concur?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:32 PM)

It would definitely be hard to argue the "parity" theme, that's for sure.

Martin (minneapolis)

Good to see Taylor getting more work in the offense. Every time he touches the ball it seems, he gets a first down. Any chance they rest AP if the clinch the division in the next 2 weeks?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:33 PM)

I doubt they sit him but it would make sense to give him 10-15 carries a game, tops, in that situation.

JIM, Birmingham

Yo, Kev!!! Simply for fun, you have a chance to choose A.Peterson and T.Jackson, or Matt Ryan and Michael Turner. Which pair do you choose to start a franchise??

Kevin Seifert
  (3:34 PM)

I think I go with Turner/Ryan. ... I'll take two really good players, especially at those positions, over one great one and one whose future is undetermined.

Will J (Portland, OR)

Kevin, how much is the Packers run defense hurt by the injury to Barnett?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:34 PM)

It was a problem before Barnett got hurt.

I can only execute the plays I'm given. Why not turn me loose?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:36 PM)

I don't disagree. If he's worthy of being a starter or No. 2 quarterback, you've got to let him run the offense and find out what happens.

Andy Allgood (Columbia Heights, MN) [via mobile]

Is Carl Gerbschmidt a real person? Or a fictional character created by Dan Barreiro?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:37 PM)

Well, he's got his own blog on the KFAN web site, so ....

Matt, Houston

I think there should be a real concern for the lack of 2nd half performance by the Bears. They haven't scored more than 7 pts in the 2nd half for a 6 weeks. If they find themselves behind in any of their remaining games, they might be in real trouble. Thoughts?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:38 PM)

Wow. I hadn't looked at that stat. I guess you could argue that games are more often decided in the first half, and that comebacks are more the exception than the norm. So regardless, the Bears need to come out swinging in all of their remaining games.

Zygi Wilf, Minneapolis, MN

How about you buy the Metrodome for $15? and I'll throw in the Vikings for an extra $5

Kevin Seifert
  (3:39 PM)

Cool. Then we can turn the press box into a huge owner's suite.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Kevin: One knock on the Vikes was that they couldn't win outdoors. It seems like they have gotten much better at it. Do you think it's because of AP or is it something else?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:40 PM)

Better defense, in my opinion. The used to get run all over in the outdoors and fall behind by 10-20 points in the first half. No more.

Jon (mad-town)

Shouldn't the Bears be playing Chris Williams, Earl Bennet...etc? Even if they do win the Division they won't win the Superbowl, so why not start building towards that ultimate goal?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:41 PM)

As long as they're in contention for division title, they need to play the players that give them the best chance to win now. I can't see how putting a completely inexperienced rookie in at left tackle would be productive. Remember, Williams didn't even play in the preseason.

Paul (St Louis Park. MN)

Kevin- Do you think the injury to Tauscher will play a large role in how the rest of the year plays out? Have you hear anything else about his chances to stay with the Packers?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:43 PM)

Rob Demovsky had a good story in the Green Bay Press-Gazette today, suggesting that Tauscher now might have a better chance of staying because it's unlikely he'll get a lucrative offer on the free agent market with a torn ACL.

Joe Fan (everywhere)

You're biased you unworthy reporter. You made negative comments about my team based on analysis! I am outraged despite the fact that every team in the division has clear flaws!!! Fan Angry Fan SMASH!!!

Kevin Seifert
  (3:44 PM)

Thanks. Appreciate the sarcasm.

J. Garcia (Tampa Bay, FL)

Any reason why the Vikings passed on me in FA two years ago?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:44 PM)

No reason that's defensible, no.

Jim (New Orleans, LA)

How do you feel about the whole Scott Pioli, Josh McDaniels, Matt Cassel to Detroit theory running around?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:45 PM)

Hadn't heard that through any official channels. But I will say that every time a team fires its GM, people start suggesting they hire Pioli. He hasn't wanted to leave up to this point. Would he choose now to leave for the Lions?

Matt : Segog

Has the sudden emergence of Shiancoe made the tight end a much less glaring need in the offseason?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:47 PM)

Yes. Count me among those surprised at how productive he has become. For all of last year and the first part of this season, he was a bust. But he's holding on to the ball now, which is a big plus.

Sharell (Raleigh, NC)

Should Rich McKay of the Falcons be on the Detroit list to run the team? I'm not sure he is happy with his new role. As a Falcon fan I know the Petrino hire was a disaster, but he did pick some good draft picks that fans are now raving about: Jerious Norwood, Jenkins, White, Bobley, Babineaux and he got Abraham from the Jets.

Kevin Seifert
  (3:48 PM)

I would say that McKay's track record as a GM is spotty enough that he might not be the wisest choice.

richard (mn)

what do you think about the nfl laying off 150 workers when it is a multi billion dollar industry and players making millions of dollars?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:50 PM)

Hi Richard. ... Economic tough times hit everybody. It'll be interesting to see how owners respond during free agency. Will they spend up to their cap or cut back?

David K (Portland, OR)

Regardless of whether or not the Chicago Bears make the playoffs, they have had some serious defensive issues this year which have put them in this position. Due to the fact that they've had to stack the box a lot of the time to stop the run, is it fair to say that the defensive line and not the secondary is the bigger cause of their problems?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:52 PM)

Pretty fair, yes. It all starts there. Their defense is predicated on the front four dominating the line of scrimmage without help.

Uncle Sam

Don't worry, soon I will buy everything from everyone.

Kevin Seifert
  (3:52 PM)

Let me know when you get around to buying our mortgages so we can get lower rates.

Jon (Mad-town)

But what's the point of winning your division if you can't win the SB? I would trade several post-season trips to build a perrenial contender not a psuedo-contender.

Kevin Seifert
  (3:54 PM)

There is also the idea that once you get to the playoffs, everyone is even. Did anyone think the Giants were built to win the Super Bowl when the playoffs started last year? Not too many.

alex, lake minnetonka

im curious... you surely enjoy covering football more than baseball because the travel isn't as bad, right?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:54 PM)

The travel is fun when you're young. I saw the country on someone else's dime.

Pheaney (Peoria IL)

Any new news on Ferotte?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:56 PM)

Nothing more than yesterday. Lower back contusion, day-to-day. I wouldn't be surprised if he misses the game at Arizona.

Kevin McHale, Minneapolis

How about me as GM of the Lions next year? I'll be unemployed in April, and I couldn't be worse than Millen, right?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:57 PM)

A lot of people have called you the Matt Millen of the NBA.

Mike (Lincoln NE)

Of all the assistant coaches in the division who do you see being potential head coaches in the next few years?

Kevin Seifert
  (3:58 PM)

Two guys that many people are impressed with are Tennessee DC Jim Schwartz and Giants DC Steve Spagnuolo.

Kevin Seifert
  (3:58 PM)

OK people, let's take one or two more...

rick (chanhassen MN)

Who is the better linebacker AJ Hawk or Chad Greenway?

Tyler (Minneapolis)

I'm do you pick which questions to respond or comment on? I only ask because I have asked a couple of questions and have yet to get a response whereas others have had multilple responses. Not that I'm complaining or anything......

Kevin Seifert
  (4:00 PM)

Just trying to keep it somewhat balanced from a topic perspective. Come back next week and I'll get to you...

Kevin Seifert
  (4:00 PM)

Thanks everyone for being here and we'll chat next week.
