Thanks for stopping by.. It's been a fun season so far and I'm eager to take your college football questions.
Bruce, what do you think about OU's chances against the gators D?? I still think this Florida D is overrated, and they have not seen anything close to our offense.
This will be the best offense UF has faced this season, but Florida is very good on D. Brandon Spikes is a terrific linebacker. It will be interesting to see if UF can get the pressure on Bradford that Texas did occasionally with Brian Orakpo.
Give me your take on this: Mid Majors like boise st, Utah, etc.. should begin scheduling more mid-tier BCS conference teams in the big ten, big 12, sec, etc to bolster their early season poll position and maybe even scheduling some top tier teams like OU or Texas, cause even with a loss to a perineal top 10 team, would help them with the computers, wouldnt it?
I don't think it would make much of a difference. Utah scheduled a team that was a power at the time the game was made (at Michigan).. they won..didn't make a huge difference. I doubt the Utes would've been ahead of a two-loss SEC champ if it had come to that. Pollsters would've just re-adjusted.
do i come back next year or am I ready for the NFL?
I think you come back. You seem to be loving the college life as much as any star and the NFL will be very hard.
Bruce, love your work. If Notre Dame gets beat by Hawaii would they consider firing Weis? And your prediction on this game?
Thanks.. Doubt it. Even if ND lost 48-0 I doubt they'd pull the plug. He's getting 2009 and I suspect if he can get ND to a BCS bowl, which considering how soft their schedule seems to be, it's reasonable... I'm picking ND to break the streak.
Course I've been overestimating Weis for two years now...
Will Rich Rod be able to get the offensive linmen to fit his spread option system?
He landed some very good prospects last year and I heard he's already in on a few that'll sign in Feb. Be patient. He'll get Michigan cranked up soon.
How do you think Ohio State will match up with Texas in the Fiesta Bowl? Texas looks scary good.
It depends on whether OSU can handle the speed of the Texas' front seven. Whenever the Buckeyes have fizzled in their big games, it's because their O-line has been exposed.
Which (if any) of the non-BCS bowl games are you looking forward to watching?
Actually, looking forward to a bunch of them.. at the top of the list is the Poinsettia with Boise-TCU.. probably going to the Cotton Bowl to see Texas Tech and Ole Miss.
I think the people in this chat need to get lives.
There is talk of dropping the Orange Bowl and adding the Cotton to the BCS when the new stadium is finished. What would happen with the Big East and ACC Orange tie ins if that occured?
I don't see that happening.
49 passing TD's and 45 rushing TD's - which will Florida's defense have to work harder to stop?
Take a look at Sam Bradfords #'s then compare them to the past 10 Heisman winning QB's. Not even close. Bradford should win the Heisman and thats a fact.
What about Colt McCoy? He was about as close to flawless as QBs get this whole season and his supporting cast isn't quite as good.
Who do you think wins the Heisman? Who would you vote for?
I think Bradford wins.. that's just a hunch. I'm voting him #2 though. All three QBs had great years.
How do you sell a Cincinnati v Virginia Tech Orange Bowl to the TV audience? They'd better have one heck of a halftime show!
Stats are one thing...especially if they are predicated off of weak defenses! Tim's body of work comes against 8 top 15 defenses! None of the Big 12 QB's have even faced a top 40 defense! So I would sum Tim's stats up to equal or better than the rest! Your thoughts?
It's a chicken-egg thing. The Big 12 plays bad defense or the SEC doesn't have more than three decent QBs to put up numbers and challenge those secondaries...
I don't think the SEC defenses are as tough as normal. Florida's been very tough as well as Alabama, but UGA gave up 45 to GT, So Carolina gave up 31 to Clemson, Tenn gave up 27 to UCLA; Ole Miss gave up 30 to Wake, Auburn gave up 34 to WVU while Ark allowed 52 to UT and MSU gave up 38 to GT.. that's a lot of the non-conference games against BCS caliber teams. And LSU's D which was way down didn't face any BCS conference teams.
Everybody says Tebow won't make an NFL star (at any position) or even an average NFL quarterback. Why is that? As much as I love to hate him, he is very athletic and a fierce competitor, both of which seem important. What do you think?
Not sure.. I wouldn't bet against him, although if you're not a precise passer, you won't succeed in the NFL. I'm sure there are doubts about him, but who knows. Other "prototype" guys failed. Regardless of how he does in the NFL I hope people don't try and use that to take away from what an amazing CF player he has been.
Patrick Nix get fired in Miami?
Doubt it. I don't think Shannon wants to have a revolving door there. A few years back they changed OCs every year it seemed like and it hurt the QBs in the program.
How do you feel about Ohio State (SOS=38) going to the Fiesta Bowl over Boise State (SOS=105)?
I think Boise is more deserving, but it's a business and OSU will being more fans and more dollars to that game.
Time Tebow or Vince Young, which was/is the better college QB? Vince had potential at the NFL level, and still does, if he keeps his head on straight, with the right offense, say in KC where Herm Edwards is talking of going to the spread, could Tebow excell in a system like that?
I dunno. I'll say VY was the best clutch player I've ever covered. Tebow has been great too. Young's the better run. Tebow's probably the better passer at this point.
I think I have the answer to your chicken-egg/SEC defense-Big 12 offense question. Virginia Tech put up 35 points (all offensive) in Lincoln against Nebraska, who finished with a 5-3 in-conference record and was 6th in the Big 12 in total defense.
Thanks.. it cuts both ways.
What do you think is the most important matchup in the NC game?
OU O-line vs. UF DL. Last time the Sooners played for it all in Miami, USC's D-line destroyed a highly touted Sooners front and that was it.
If Ole Miss beats Texas Tech and Florida beats Oklahoma does that put to rest the argument of which conference is best?
Yeah, I think so.
Can you envision a scenario that leads Notre Dame to join a conference?
Realistically? Nope. I can't.
Bruce, Why should I show up to New Orleans? I'm seeing reports we've already lost.
Because your team is like you..pretty fearless and I suspect they relish being the underdog.
Does Texas have a shot at a share of the National Title?
Not any more.. I wonder if USC would've been in the Fiesta if UT had been impressive beating the Trojans would that have given some voters pause (assuming that OU beat UF)..now people will just dismiss it as 'Ah, it's the Buckeyes... everyone beats them."
Florida should have virtually every starter back next year, save for Louis Murphy and a couple OT's. On the flipside, Bama loses a QB, safety, OC, and probably LT. Would you say we'll see a repeat in Atlanta next year?
Don't know..let's see if Tebow, Harvin and Spikes come back.
Is Tebow just like Brett Favre. A pretty good player, but the media slobbers all over him and has annointed him "GREATEST PLAYER OF ALL TIME"
I don't get how people can dismiss Tebow as hype. Are they watching the games????
Percy or Reggie Bush?
In college I'll say Reggie Bush.
who should i hire to be our head coach here at mississippi state?
I'd say go for an offensive guy...Dan Mullen might be a good realistic option.
Bruce, if Boise pulls out the 'W' against TCU, where would you have them finishing? And with their youth, where would you have them preseason next year?
Probably top six and somewhere in the top 10 for '09.
Can the other UT get back to prominence with Kiffin calling the shots
Not sure. Curious to see what kind of staff he puts together. Having his dad to run the D is a good start, but recruiting there will be tough against UF, UGA, Bama and LSU.
Does Turner Gill get the Auburn job, or is this interview more for show?
Not sure. I think that's a bad spot. Gill's a hot name right now. Wonder if he might be better served waiting to see what comes open next year rather than takeAuburn. Heard a rumor that Jack Del Rio might be in the mix for it.
Put Boise State against Ohio State's schedule and see how they do.
Fair point, but I'm not sure OSU wins at Oregon either.
Where would Crabtree go in the draft if he enters after this season?
Top 10. He's big, super tough and very instinctive. He won't run a sub 4.4, but he'll probably wow them in individual workouts.
I wish I still had a job. Crabtree would go #1.
"Not sure. I think that's a bad spot." Is that a "bad spot" overall, or just for Gill?
I think bad spot overall... You're replacing a guy who just won six straight over the archest of arch-rivals, also beat a lot of top 10 teams... didn't have a ton of off-field arrests like some schools do and the boosters are supposedly pretty nutty. Oh and now you're up against Saban going at full speed at Bama. No thanks to that one.
How do you see getting the San Diego State job?
Heard Glen Mason maybe because he and the AD worked together. Think they'd be smart to go after DeWayne Walker or a guy who has recruited a lot out there.
Why is Charlie Strong NOT higher up on the lists for coaching vacancies?
Good question. I talked to him after the game Saturday and he seemed resigned to the fact that he's out there and people should know him by now. He's right they should. He deserves a head coaching shot. I do think more teams are looking for guys who come from the offensive side of the ball right now, which probably doesn't help (Sark, Kiffin, Swinney, Locksley to name a few).
Is USC rebuilding or reloading on defense next season?
Reloading..You lose Ellison and probably Mays along with Cushing and Maualuga and Moala.. Let's see how hard Everson Griffen wants to work. They'll get back some good CBs (Shareece Wright) and people rave about Chris Galippo as the MLB. It'll be a step down from this year though.
The Tebow hatred is just asinine around the country. People who pimp Bradford just like to mention his stats, not any intangibles. Also, Tebow has to keep living up to last year's numbers, and since he got off to a slow start (which actually looks like it benefited UF more as other guys got involved early) everyone dismissed him. If people didn't watch him against FSU and Bama then they really missed out.
Just because you're celebrating one guy doesn't mean you're slighting another. You can have more than one guy be "great."
Just because you're celebrating one guy doesn't mean you're slighting another. You can have more than one guy be "great."
UGA question here...I know we were a letdown this year but what does the future look like?
Good but it depends on whether Stafford and Knowshon come back.
Bruce...of all bowls this year, bcs, non bcs. Which are you the most excited to watch?
Gotta start with the BCS title game first.
Bruce, quick, top 3 bowls this year.
Wait, I did this list on my blog yesterday. Check it out.
Bruce, Florida by 2 TD's, what you thinking?
I never said that.. I'm leaning to UF by less than a TD.
How do you think the Detroit Lions would fare aginst the BCS teams?
They'd destroy them. Wouldn't even be close.
Do you think Colt McCoy is going to get more Heisman votes than me because the voters feel bad about Texas getting jobbed?
I bet he might.
In LSU's case does having a month to prepare instead of 7 days take a little bit out of the sting of the trip option.
You'd think it would.
How about Ed Orgeron for SDSU?
I think he'd be interested if their search firm called. He knows that area and has the recruiting connections to bring a lot of talent there and that's vital in turning that place around.
Who do you see taking the Syracuse job?
I keep hearing Skip Holtz, but not sure. I know Doug Marrone and Al Golden made strong cases and I think that Turner Gill if he wants it would go over well.
Any chance Brock Lesnar loses against Mir in a rematch?
Sure, he caught once before, so anything's possible in MMA.
was sam bradford a red shirt freshman
Yes. Bradford's actually two months younger than Jimmy Clausen who is a second-year sophomore.
Is USC better off without Steve Sarkisian? The offense wasn't what we were used to seeing with USC.
It might look better in '09 since the O-line won't be so young and almost everyone is back. If John Morton, the WR coach gets it, he's taking over a ripe situation.
three more questions..
I'd give back the extra three weeks to prepare if I got Pelini and Dorsey back.
I bet you would.
Everyone is talking about whether UT should have made it over Oklahoma. But what is your opinion on whether Florida deserves to be playing in the National Championship over Texas based on the top teams that each played? Oklahoma vs Alabama Texas Tech vs. Georgia Oklahoma State vs Ole Miss Missouri vs. Florida State
I think after beating the top-ranked team in the SEC title game, UF is deserving. Ole Miss is a good team. Florida didn't play well but they responded and built a strong resume.
Any chance Norm Chow comes back to USC?
No, I don't see that happening ever again.
Thanks for all the questions.. if you have others that I didn't get to, please send them into my blog inbox.
