Whats up everyone? Lets get this started.
Hey Matt, What areas do you see the Vikings going after in the first two rounds of the Draft?
Well, I don't see their QB on the roster right now, so I would suspect that one of those picks is used to draft a QB-or trade for someone like McNabb. How good would this team be right now with McNabb added? Wow. Serious contender. Personnally, I really don't like their OL very much at all with the exception of Hutch. They are not going to replace McKinnie-nor should they-but he is very overrated. Birk is set to be a UFA. The right side is less than impressive. This is a rare case of the RB making the OL look better than they are rather than the other way around.
I understand the Colts will probably never spend high draft pick or free agent money on DT but if you could put anyone in that scheme without cap restraint who would you take college and FA
I don't know the college draft well enough yet, but it doesn't look like a real strong crop of upfield three technique types. Think Warren Sapp. He hasn't worked out yet, but Glenn Dorsey from a year ago coming out of LSU would have been exactly what they are after. As for vets, Tommie Harris immediatly comes to mind. Explosive. Disruptive. Very quick off the ball. Quick to get into the backfield. Harris isn't the best DT in football right now, but when he is on, he is really something. He is the type of guy they would want.
I know Denver's primary concern is DL, do you think they will still grab the best player available in the 1st round or reach for the defensive player?
Denver has plenty of defensive needs, so I doubt that they reach for the best DL, as opposed to the best pure defensive player. Would go almost entirely D on DDay. A big time playmaking safety would really help a lot.
I'll take the win, but the Steelers' O sure looked awful against the Cowboys on Sunday. Cleveland should be an easy win, but any chance they can beat either Baltimore and Tennessee and secure a first-round bye?
Just sent in my PGH/BAL write up and I did pick PGH. Was planning on taking Balt all week, but switched my mind at the last minute. Tenn might not have anything to play for either, so I don't think running the table is out of the question. The one thing you can say about PGH, that you might not be able to say about any other team in the league, is that they simply will not get blown out by anyone. They will be in every game they play and will either win handily, win close or lose a very close one. Such an advantage.
In 2006 Denver went basically d on dday and none of them have panned out. Does Denver need someone other than Shanny to draft defensive guys?
Perhaps Don't completely write all those guys off yet, but I feel ya.
What is wrong with the Bills? How could they go from 5-1 to 6-7 I really thought this was the year I guess not
What a mess, esp on O. The QBs have simply played terrible. The OL isn't blocking anyone, esp in the run game-which makes the wheels fall off entirely. BTW, why on Earth did they get away from Lynch so much last week in a very close game? As for pass catchers, I only see one guy who scares anyone in Evans-that has been a problem for a few years now.
What do the Falcons select in the draft? DL, CB, WR?
Not WR. Just resigned Jenkins. White is a star. Douglass shows promise. Robinson may turn into something. TE isn't stressed in their scheme, but what a great safety blanket that would be for Ryan. One more OLinemen is needed, but I would bet that they stress D more than anything this year. A true FS would be huge. Another CB for sure. A backup/future replacement for Gravy Jackson.
So...Did my Pro-Bowl stock rise an inch or ten?
Wow, I guess the NFC TEs are pretty weak. I suppose Witten is still the top guy. Who else? Carlson? Olsen? Cooley? I guess you have a shot, but wow-weak crop.
"Gravy Jackson"=NICE!!!Instead of calling you Matty Ice (that one's taken already), you can be "Matty Nice". How's that sound? Do the Falcons make the playoffs? What position do they draft for? Man, it's great being able to publically talk about the Dirty Birds, you know, after that whole "Vick" thing.
I stole Gravy Jackson from a question from last week's chat. Loved it. As for Matty Nice-that's no good. Try again. But thanks for playing.
If the Panthers don't make the Super Bowl will it be because of Jake Delhomme or the defense?
Both. If this were the stock market, I would be Selling High on Carolina right now. I am convinced if they played TBay 10 times, that the series would be 5-5. Don't trust the passing game at all outside of S Smith. Don't trust the run D or DL as a whole outside of Peppers. Can Car win it all? Sure. Their running game is terrific, but are they one of the elite teams? I don't think so. Pretty sure that I had them ranked lowest of the ten of us in this week's power pole...but my opinion seems to differ from the group pretty consistently in the Power Rankings this year.
"If the Panthers don't make the Super Bowl will it be because of Jake Delhomme or the defense?" I think the answer here would be "The New York Giants", don't we all agree?
That could have something to do with it! Or even the Cowboys. Or Bucs. Or Cards-in Zona. Or Philly if they get in. Won't be an easy road in the NFC.
Do you think the Broncos should/will make a serious push at Albert Haynesworth (who will undoubtedly command a lot of money) when he becomes a free agent in the offseason, or should/will Denver just build through the draft?
That would be terrific and would make Den one of the very best teams in the league, but Tenn isn't going to let Big Al walk. No way.
with Ginn/Bess/Camarillo all playing pretty good this season, do you think upgrading the WR position in Miami will be a top priority like some believe? or do you think they will develope the young guys they have? (Ginn is 2nd year, Camarillo is 3rd year, Bess is a rookie)
I like all of those, but I do think they need to address WR. But only if they can get a true #1 WR. Not drafting another "guy" in the third round or so or brining in a so-so free agent. If they have a shot at someone who can develop into a TRUE #1, that O needs it.
Can the Lions afford to choose anyone other than Andre Smith with the first pick (assuming things stay the way they are)? Wouldn't the Bengals love to get him?
Watching that dude, who wouldn't love to get him? From the little research I have done, it looks like Crabtree and Smith and then everyone else. Of course the QBs stock will inflate, but if I were in charge of Det, I would address the lines first. DL might actually be the bigger priority. I certainly do not love/like Det's OL, but I could live with getting two new OGs (one in draft and one in free agency who is proven) and living with Backus at LT, Cherilus at RT and Raola at OC at least for one more year while I killed the DL with the stronger resources.
If Brian Westbrook can stay healthy is he the most important player in the NFC playoff chase?
Hmmm....yeah, I suppose, although Philly is in a pretty deep hole right now. Maybe Romo. I know Romo didn't play his best game last week, but remember how awful Dallas was with Johnson?
What's Adrian Peterson's chances of landing MVP?
Funny you mention that. In our Scouts Round Table this week, I voted him as the runner up to Peyton Manning...but really could have gone either way. But I have never heard his name brought up for MVP-which is shocking. Minny is a 5-11 type team without him and yes, even with C Taylor. What Peterson does is truly amazing.
The Matt Cassel talk has died down a bit recently. Do teams still view him as a legit starter? Where's he playing next year?
I worry that he is Scott Mitchell. However, I promise that someone will pay him starters money. Det? Been some talk of the Pats' GM and OC starting that rebuilding project. If that were the case, I would condone the move. Otherwise, I would really be concerned.
I know they are two different types of qb's but is there any possible way ryan declines the way young did in his second year?
Of course it is possible, but highly unlikely. Ryan has the things now that take a long time for most QBs to develop. Anticipation. Timing. Feel for coverages. Willingness to drop it in a tight window. Ice. The dude is terrific.
If Kevin and Pat are suspended for the Vikings, do you think they could still make the playoffs?
I guess, but it would be by default. Even with the Williams Wall, Minny will have a real tough time this week in Zona. But, GBay has no D and are basically out of it and Chi just isn't that good.
What do you think the chances are Cassel, McNabb or another solid veteran qb ends up with the vikes instead of another rookie to groom
That would be the right move-esp McNabb. You will hear D Anderson's name a lot there too. I am not a DA fan, am very cautious on Cassel, but really like McNabb for the Vikes. Jeff Garcia is up for free agency and so is Warner, but I really doubt they hit the open market. Time to be aggressive for a vet QB though in Minny.
M-Dub I was reading somewhere that when Westbrook is out of a game theres a 10 point differential. I know that Westbrook is a playmaker & defenses have to account(even shift to him), I'm not knockin him but a 10point difference??
First I heard that. Anth, you seem like a good dude and reputable, but I might need to confirm that from another source before getting too excited about that number. No offense Bro.
Matt, I am a desperate Packers fan looking for answers. Looking forward to the draft, do you think Raji would be perfect for the Packers defensive line. A player of his size could stop the run a little bit.
Yeah, that is a real good fit. To me, it is simple. Last year, the Pack had tremendous DL depth accross the board and just kept rotating in fresh talented bodies. Then they go trade C Williams. Then the injuries. Lose KGB and most importantly, Jenkins. Game is won in the trenches and Barnett/Hawk need to be protected. Plus, with as much man to man as they play, pressure is key. Jenkins will come back and maybe Harrell grows up in a year, but adding at least one more DL, esp DT, is needed for sure.
Not to get ahead of the curve here, but don't you see alot of Peyton Manning in me? 1)Kind of Dorky 2)Studies the Playbook 3)Well-educated 4)Knows how to read defenses 5)Drafted to a terrible team 6)Stays at home to study the playbook while others are out partying The similarities are frightening!!!
Not too far off. Matty Ice's Daddy wasn't a Pro Bowl caliber NFL QB-nor is his brother. Still, I feel ya a bit.
Why in the world do I get to start for the Vikes? I mean the only thing it seems like I have on Tarvaris is the deep ball.
Gus, I think you and TJ are both terrible. TJax certainly has more upside though and you would think that you might protect the ball a little better than you do, but wow. Mess.
It is very tough to win in this league in spite of the QB position.
Will Denver draft another RB in next years draft?
Probably, but not until after the first few rounds. Plug in yet another guy. Torrain will be back. As will Hillis. Pick up an under the radar free agent. Build the D!
Any chance the Broncos can sneak away from Carolina with a win? I have a feeling this could be a trap game for Carolina, after a big Monday night win over a division rival and preparing on a short week.
Could be a let down for Car for sure. Still, I just don't see how Den stops that running game. One thing about Den though-they play to their competition like no other team in this league. Could surpise as they did in ATL a few weeks ago.
Would Larry Johnson look good in a Broncos uniform?
For sure. Can't see him being traded within the division though.
M-train, who's turnaround has been most impressive, Miami, or Atlanta?
M-Train, eh? Hmmm. Nope. Back to the drawing board. I would say ATL just because of the gigantic mess that was the Vick and Petrino fiasco-more off the field than on really. Tough call, but ATL also has a rook at QB.
Would you say Joe Flacco resembles a more athletic and mobile Drew Bledsoe with his size are arm strength?
Not bad. Taller. Much more mobile like you said. Certainly more than a pocket passer, which was all Bledsoe could do.
M-Dub, the Eagles play down to their competition like nobody...not even Denver. I'm worried about this Monday night game...should I be? Or, is Dorsey going to feel the effect of the Iggles D?
Philly surely does as well. Don't worry. Clev is a complete train wreck. They have been respectable in their national TV games like this, but Dorsey can't throw the football. Jim Johnson will complete crush that running game-then it is all downhill from there. No worries.
LJ in Denver with his court record? More likely with Jerry's Kids in Dallas. Denver would not trade for LJ, too old too much money left on his contract.
That is true-LJ is nearly untradable. However, do not think for one minute that Denver/Shanny wouldn't take a chance on someone with questionable character.
Would the jets trade favre for rodgers?
I would in a heart beat.
Matty Wise, who is more valuable to his team: Forte, Flacco, or Pennington?
Going to go with Forte here. He would have to be Chi's team MVP right now-no doubt. As for Balt, I think that honor goes to Ngata. With Miami, I guess Pennington gets it, but watch them lately-every D they face is completely crowding the LOS to kill the run and very short passing game. Henne will start there before long. Still, Miami would have been a mess without Pennington this year. Who is Miami's team MVP? Porter?
After the whole Travis Henry debacle, Shanny is done with questionable character guys. That's why he went Eddie Royal over DeSean "it's all about me" Jackson.
I am not buying it. Marcus Thomas. Brandon Marshall. I am sure there are more.
Ryan-what is America's Finest City anyways? From Pittsburgh like me?
Does 2-1 get it done for the Cowboys?
I think so and I also think they beat NYG this weekend.
I hadn't heard of Jared Gaither before your chat a couple weeks ago. I watched him every snap Sunday night. Guy is a freak and may be the strongest guy in the league.
He really is something. Legit 6' 8". Light on his feet. Just a puppy. Was blown away with how late he went in that supplemental draft. Like I said back then, I fell in love with him from watching him at Greenbelt HS while I was doing recruiting at Pitt. From Maryland, went to Maryland, then to Baltimore-they just know more about him than the other teams in the league? Give Ozzie a ton of credit for that move. LTs don't grow on trees!
Come on!!! If Pennington finishes strong and takes Miami to the playoffs he should be in the conversation for NFL MVP not just team MVP. This team would be AWFUL without Pennington. BTW Very short passing game? Better check the ole YPA on Pennington.
No, I know that with his TPA, but it seems to be changing of late. You can't convince me that he is a strong deep passer. Still, I respect his game and yeah, Miami surely would be in big trouble without him. Never disputed that.
Fact or Fiction: KC upsets SD this week to mathmatically end the Chargers playoff hopes.
Fiction...but certainly possible. SD breaks my heart a bit. Thought they were primed to blow up after their bye week. Stuck my neck out for them. Even though they killed Oak last week, I was rather unimpressed. Still, real long week helps a lot this time of year.
"Matty Wise" it is, M-dub on occasion will also work (it's just so generic). So is ATL all but out of the playoffs if they don't finish 3-0?
On the fence on Matty Wise. Nah, can't go there. Yeah, I think that is accurate for ATL. Still, terrific season. They will be back.
Well what's most likely to happen? Denver upsets Carolina (shortened week) or KC upsets SD (long week).
KC over SD-less faith in the Chargers than Carolina. Plus a cross country road trip, which never seems to end well for the West Coast team.
What has been the Chargers main problem this year? coaching? LT? defense?
Whew-all. The OL is a shell of what it used to be. LT is playing hurt-no doubt in my mind. The coaching gets away from the running game too much and doesn't play Sproles enough, which puts too much pressure on Rivers-and I am convinced that he isn't built to handle that kind of stress. The D coaching was atrocious under Cottrell-so conservative. Merriman has really been missed. Cromartie went backwards this year, but also has been playing with a bad hip. Correctable though.
Matt, how much do you think the Chargers are missing Lorenzo Neal?
Quite a bit-or at least someone more like him. Seems like the O philosophy is changing away from the power running game (that was incredibly succesful) to a pass first mentality.
Even I know that we shouldn't be 4th in the power rankings! But thanks for the props, Matty Dubs!
What if PGH doesn't come back? Two of those Dallas losses were with Johnson behind center. The Boys are a force. How high do you put them after they win this weekend vs. NYG?
Go out on a limb and predict the AFC East winner!
Looking at the schedules, I lean towards NE, but they are just so beat up now. The Jets should win it, but they have simply collapsed over these past two weeks. Give me the Phins. Wow.
What does it take to get McNabb for the Vikes? Giving up a 1st and 3rd for Allen has so far panned out.
Guessing: a 2nd rounder
Even though we've gotten smacked around the last 2 weeks we still deserve to be 13th in the power rankings ahead of a lot better teams.
I voted you guys 14th. But wow, can that team/coaching be any more conservative? Crippling on both sides of the ball. Get aggressive!
Matt, are you convinced that Garrard is the QB for the Jaguars?
I am. But he can't do it all. That OL is horrible right now and needs more than the two OGs getting healthy-although that will help a great deal. Their WRs are horrible too. They don't help him one bit and he gets so little time. Don't blame Garrard or MJD-the rest of the O is to blame.
Do you think Marvin Harrison has done enough return next year.He has looked better the last 4 weeks but is a huge cap number next year.
I don't know the # off the top of my head, but like you said, it is a very big hit. I would let him walk for sure or restructure if he is willing.
And the Head Coach for the Browns next year will be.........
Dubster, If Miami does indeed win the division, Sparano better get COY, Porter DPOY, and C-Penn for MVP! And Of course, Tuna for Executive of the Year!!!
Biased at all?
What will we get for Winslow? 2nd or 3rd?
I would think the big speed bump with K2 will be his physical. A LOT of ailments. Depends what the Doc says. But, lets just say that he is 100% and your team doc thinks he is in tip top shape (unlikely mind you). If you were say, Tampa or Buff or Carolina or Philly (off the top of my head)-I would give up much more than a 3rd. Maybe even a late first.
After drafting me, Jerry Jones said I was their future starter. oops.
Doug-your name seems to come up just about every week in my chat. That is rather odd to me. Is your family big fans of my work?
$25m for Marc Columbo. The salaries of just our oline is rediculous. Big Davis is the only who deserves his check.
I like Gurode as well. Flozell's signing looks like a big mistake as well.
M-Dub...usually agree with you, but a late first for Winslow? He's as over-rated as you can get. Is it because the lack of TEs in the league? What's the rationale behind that?
When right-which isn't nearly often enough-I really believe that Winslow is a major difference maker and one of the top 3 (or so) receiving threats at that position in the league. Move him all over the formation. Very competitive. I am a fan of his play. Some of his other behavior is suspect and his health will be the big road block.
Remember the season that K2 put together in 2007? For a while there, he was uncoverable. Wore down...which he tends to do.
Okay folks. I am out. Sincerely, Big Willy, Matty Wise, M-Dub, etc etc etc See ya next week.
