Chat with ESPN Radio's Scott Van Pelt

ESPNRadio.com
  (12:36 PM)

Welcome to the Chat today. Scott is ready to go. Let's 'git 'er done!

Alec (Cincinnati)

SVP, how long can Tirico bet chalk and win? It's quite remarkable.

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:37 PM)

Hey everyone. I have to give it up to the man. His record this year is sick. But it's like sitting next to a guy at a Blackjack table who is splitting 10s and hitting 14 against a dealer's six. What he's doing won't work over the long haul. He is kicking my a** this year.

Espo (NYC)

How you doing Scott? Who complements you the best as an achor on Sportscenter?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:38 PM)

Neil Everett and me together. He's the jelly to my peanut butter, or vice versa. Something about the two of us out there makes us both as comfortable as we're going to be.

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:38 PM)

Which led me to singing the Randy Watson version of 'Greatest Love' the other night (don't know if anyone saw that). If you did see that, I'm sorry.

Adam (syracuse,ny)

It seems like they picked Pavin only because there was a lack of choice. I respect Pavin as a golfer, I just don't think he's the right guy to captain a Ryder cup team

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:39 PM)

The thing about Pavin that people need to understand is it's his heart that enabled him to compete at a high level. I mean, look at the guy. He's tiny. But he was a bad man in Ryder Cups as a player. I think you might be pleasantly surprised.

dylan ft.myers fla

What do u think about how much money CC sabithia is getting from new york?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:40 PM)

It's almost doomed to fail. It's almost doomed because what level of performance on the field will equal that number? I think he was looking for a reason not to go to New York, and New York came up with $161 million reasons why he had no choice.

Marc (Malden, MA)

SVP, our Redskins stink. Is Zorn ever going to get some guts? Against BAL, they had 4th and short at least 3 times and kicked (2 punts, 1 missed FG).

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:42 PM)

There's a thin line between being clever and being stupid. Punting on first down may have been a smarter play against Baltimore's defense. I don't think what Zorn lacks is guts.

Don (Lansing)

Any more Mayne Street appearances on the horizon?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:42 PM)

One and done. Get in, set the bar ridiculously high and get out. That's what we did (I think).

Nate (Madison)

Huh, I open your chat and the ad on the side of the page is for Jack Daniels. Did you plan that?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:43 PM)

I'm not a Jack Daniels guy. I'm not a brown water guy, unless Diet Coke counts.

Brad (Gadsden,Alabama)

What do you think is going to be the best bowl game and what is going to be the worst?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:43 PM)

Best would have to be Florida-Oklahoma. Unfortunately the worst has a much deeper pool of candidates to choose from. I mean, look at the schedule and you tell me. Outside of degenerate gamblers and parents of kids on the field, who's watching some of these games?

john (cincinnati)

svp, what is going on with john daly? is the incident in australia trivial or the symptom of larger problems?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:44 PM)

I must be honest and admit I truly love JD. But all of us that care about the guy are concerned how the story ends. I'll leave it at that.

Kylie (Austin)

SVP- I need your help. I work with this total jerk... How can I ignore him so I can make it through the day w/o going off on the guy?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:45 PM)

Pretend he's me and flirt with him.

Nick (Chi)

Get your copy of the Dark Knight yet?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:45 PM)

No, I was in Best Buy yesterday and I didn't buy it. I had a dinner with my wonderful staff to get to and I didn't want to be late. I did sleep until 2p yesterday, but that's an entirely different story.

Alec (Cincinnati)

Would you give Heath Ledger and oscar?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:46 PM)

Yes, without blinking. Wasn't that the one performance in a film you saw this year that you still think about today? Because it was for me.

Don (Laurel, MD)

I know you're a true Terp at heart...were you born and raised in MD, and if so, where?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:47 PM)

Yes. Montgomery County most of my life, up until I moved to Florida to work for the Golf Channel. You can take the boy away from the Terps, but you can't take the Terps out of the boy.

Jon (Albany)

Are your sportscenter commericals all you? Do others write them? Don't ruin the illusion for me SVP...I love the one where you are watching tape of what you are doing wrong...

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:48 PM)

There's an ad agency that writes them. But the Jimmy Rollins bit was largely ad-libbed between the two of us.

Jim (Lansing)

SVP - confirmed bachelor or still "waiting for the right one"?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:49 PM)

The longer it goes on, the harder it is to change my ways. I'm too picky for my own good. I mean, look at me. Who do I think I'm worthy of waiting for?

Alec (Cincinnati)

SVP, are you going to any bowls?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:50 PM)

There are no directs from Hartford to Boise. I'm sure I'll be working during the best bowls, so I guess no.

Max Power (Parts Unknown)

Where can I find those Lefty Driesell checkerboard pants from when they lost to NC State and got jobbed from the NCAA Tournament in 1974? Now THAT was basketball....and fashion!

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:51 PM)

J Lindeberg, who outfits a lot of the PGA Tour players, has busted out some sweet plaid slacks in the last few years. Not Lefty Driesell sweet, but sweet nonetheless.

Mike Vick (Halfway House)

Where do you see me playing in the 2009 season?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:52 PM)

Somewhere. Somebody will take a flier on the guy. But I wouldn't pretend to know who.

Greg (Knoxville)

How long before Lane Kiffin has a winning season for UT?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:52 PM)

It had better not be long!

Jon (Albany)

Who is the hotter bald man? You or Trico?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:53 PM)

Here's a favorite even I would bet! I'm a 21.5-point favorite over Tirico (minimum). Lay the points!

Marcus (Richmond, VA)

What sports personality do you like to listen to on ESPN radio?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:54 PM)

Cris Carter is a really interesting guy, Barkley is Barkley, Barry Melrose (who if he cut his pinkey would bleed more man than I have in my entire body - he's the king of kings).

Ryan,Baltimore

You agree with Peter King that Matt Ryan should currently be 2nd behind P.Manning on our MVP ballets

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:55 PM)

He's having an unbelievable year, and if they make the playoffs, absolutely. The kid is for real. This is not an accident.

Josh (VA)

Are you as excited as me to see the best uniforms in college football in the Rose Bowl? and I am not talking about USC home red, I am talking about the white on white on white of PSU with the black cleats because on film they make you look slower.

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:56 PM)

I wanted Penn State to play Alabama for that very reason. Old school vs. old school. Plain helmets, plain jerseys. I've got sour news for you, though. The guys in the cardinal red with the song girls, they're the better team in this football game. You win uniforms, they win the game.

Alan (College Park)

Cavs-Boston, 7 game series, who you got? Does it depend on who has home court?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:58 PM)

That's a great question, and it's one people should start asking because the Cavs are for real, and the Celtics seem better this year. LeBron is gonna get rings before he's done.

ESPNRadio.com
  (12:58 PM)

Time for two more before the show!

Barry Melrose

Scott, any thought to ever growing a skullet?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:59 PM)

If you want the line in the Van Pelt-Tirico bowl to go down to pick 'em, I'll grow a skullet.

Nate (Madison)

Who would Mel Kiper say has more potential: Master Shake, Meatwad, or Frylock?

Scott Van Pelt
  (12:59 PM)

Meatwad made a fire-breathing Easter bunny come out of his mind. What has Shake ever done? It's Meatwad, hands down.

ESPNRadio.com
  (1:00 PM)

Thanks for chatting today. Scott will be flying solo and talking to Peter Gammons, Chris Mortensen, North Carolina's Roy Williams, Cole Hamels and Corey Pavin today. You can keep chatting over at ESPNRadio.com...just click on Tirico & Van Pelt!

ESPNRadio.com
  (1:05 PM)

The conversation now carries on without Scott. Listen to the show while you continue to chat away!

Mike Leach (angry)

If SVP doesn't get invited to the SC Anchor Heisman ceremony, then they just shouldn't even have the thing

Max Power (Parts Unknown)

I want a Michael Buffer soundbite to introduce Mel Kiper Jr anytime he is on ESPN Radio.....work on that one

Dan (Buffalo, NY)

SVP ask Tirico how excited he to call a game involving Ken Dorsey on MNF? As a Browns fan I am simply rooting for a higher draft pick.

Mike

Am I the only one who wonders about this whole throwback jersey thing? I mean, the ABA team in New Orleans had nothing at all to do with the Hornets. Why rock the throwbacks last night?

Devlin (MN)

Before it's al said and done will LBJ be in the greatest ever discusssion with MJ or will he be the only?

zach (indiana)

no he needs rings

Max Power (Parts Unknown)

Barry Melrose....best laugh ever

A Rod (NYC)

Rings? What are those? I have Madonna!

Alec (Cincinnati)

You ever listen to Beano Cook on The Herd on your day off? He's nuts.

Kylie (Austin)

Can you have a weekly interview with Colt McCoy next football season?? That was hilarious!

Turner (Boise)

SVP, I'm sure there are a few flights here to Boise that wouldn't take you more than most of the day.

ESPNRadio.com
  (1:18 PM)

I'm surprised by the lack of dating requests for Scott today. We had been at a record pace in the chat over the last few weeks.

Tim (Suwanee, GA)

It appears this MLB free Agency period is all about the money. More specifically, how much money can Mr. Boras make for his guys and him...sigh!!!

Tim (Covington, GA)

Tony Romo is choke artist. Trade him quickly and pursue Michael Vick.

Jason (Seoul, Korea)

How about this: The Yanks/Mets just asked for $450 million from NYC. For what?! To raise ticket prices, sign "flashes in the pan" to decade long deals? Wow.

Tim (Suwanee, GA)

Hold on about Romo. Wade Phillips, defensive specialist is getting hammered. The offense seems to be doing quite fine, thank you very much.

Kylie (Austin)

ESPNRadio.com guy... Thanks for that... I know I haven't been as vocal with my SVP crush lately b/c sadly, I feel it is a fruitless endeavor... :)

ESPNRadio.com
  (1:23 PM)

The fortune cookie says life is full of difficult endeavors.

Tim (Suwanee, GA)

Speaking of the eternally single SVP, when will we get a webcam view of his bachelor pad?

ESPNRadio.com
  (1:25 PM)

Send the suggestion to MTV for the next season of 'Cribs.'

Tim (Suwanee, GA)

If SVP lives in a crib, how did he have the intelligence to learn to let himself out?

Kylie (Austin)

HaHa Well this endeavor would be much less difficult if you would help a girl out, ESPNradio.com!

ESPNRadio.com
  (1:33 PM)

I'll see what I can do. Many of the great love stories of our time have been written through chats. Plus, ESPNRadio.com is a pretty romantic place.

Mike (Va Beach)

Who needs eharmony when you have espn radio chat

Kylie (Austin)

Especially on Thursdays.

ESPNRadio.com
  (1:37 PM)

Pretty soon we're going to have to start making commercials featuring all of the couples we've put together.

Brad (Mancelona, MI)

Some of the greatest couples ever have met here: Greenie and Golic, Cowherd and Carrol....

Kylie (Austin)

Cowherd and Carrol... that's great!

Kylie (Austin)

Have you been successful in match making?

ESPNRadio.com
  (1:41 PM)

Anyone who is here in this chat regularly on Thursdays should know the answer already.

Alec (Cincinnati)

This chat is getting too personal

Nate (Madison)

Cherry Coke Zero was sent down from heaven.

Chris (Roanoke,VA)

How is what Plaxico Burress has done worse than all of the Pac Man stuff?

Kylie (Austin)

I think what he did was stupid, but at the same time I understand, sorta, why he felt he needed extra protection. He just went about it the wrong way.

Mike (Va Beach)

I think we need some hockey talk on here. Where's Bucci at?

ESPNRadio.com
  (1:53 PM)

You can also listen to the Hockey Today podcast with E.J. Hradek and Matthew Barnaby in PodCenter.

Kylie (Austin)

Or no hockey talk would work too...

Chris (Chicago)

wait, Hockey is still around?

stout (wichita)

the cowboys are too inconsistent.. the giants had a bad game last week, but over all they have a more well rounded team than the cowboys.

Kylie (Austin)

Well ok then Stout.. That's good to know.

ESPNRadio.com
  (2:00 PM)

It has been a pleasure to spend the last 90 minutes with all of you, but every good thing must come to an end. We'll see you back here next Thursday. Stay safe, take care of each other and have a good week!
