Chat with Bruce Feldman

Bruce Feldman
  (4:01 PM)

Thanks for stopping by. Excited to be here to talk some college football.

Brad (Gadsden,Alabama)

Bruce, Are you going to the sugar bowl? im going and im pumped

Bruce Feldman
  (4:02 PM)

I would be going to the Sugar, but it's the same day as the Cotton Bowl and since I haven't seen OIe Miss all season I'm going there.

Joel (cleveland, TN)

with the news of Demarco Murray out of the BCS championship, do you think it will affect OU's offense at all?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:03 PM)

I think it will, but OU is pretty deep at tailback. It'd be a much bigger blow if it was their starting QB or even starting center (Jon Cooper) who were gonna be out.

Jevan Snead (Oxford, MS)

It is wrong of me to take SWEET PLEASURE in Texas getting jobbed twice and knowing that I prevented Florida from potentially having a perfect season and Tebow from winning his second straight Heisman?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:05 PM)

You know I hadn't though of it like that, but I guess there would be some irony in that.

Kate (UF Alum in DC)

Hey Bruce-- while most people can't say if Florida or Oklahoma will win, most would agree that the difference will come down to who can stop the other's offense better. So, whose defense has the greater advantage over the other's offense? Remember, the question isn't whose offense is better, but whose defense is more likely to stop or at least slow down the other's offense? Thanks!

Bruce Feldman
  (4:06 PM)

I think Florida's D, especially in the back seven is better, and I also think UF has better special teams.

John Heisman (New York, NY)

What is your opinion on how Tebow was left out of the 154 Heisman ballots?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:07 PM)

I was surprised although I guess some voters really believed in the Texas Tech guys and/or Shonn Greene.

Craig, Grand Haven, Michigan

Bruce, Michigan's transistion to the spread offense was rough. What do see changing and improving for next season? Thanks.

Bruce Feldman
  (4:08 PM)

The O-line will be a lot better I think and the incoming freshman QB from Texas might be sharp enough to win the starting job. They also need to get a lot better in the secondary.

james (south bend)

hey bruce, my friend and i are making nd shirts next year that say 'in weis we bust.' can i put you down for a few?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:10 PM)

Eh, probably not, but I think my neighbor who pitched for ND would buy some.

Ashlee (Bradenton, FL)

Can you please explain to me why it is such a big deal that Tebow was left off of ballots? Bradford and McCoy were as well...

Bruce Feldman
  (4:11 PM)

I think it would be a really big deal if they gave voters a top five and they were left off with just three, I don't think it's outrageous to tout someone else at #3.

David, MO

Has the Heisman turned into an award for the QB of the best team or are they always the most deserving?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:12 PM)

I think it's been like that pretty much for generations.

Matt (DC)

Does Arizona have a chance to take down BYU saturday night?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:13 PM)

Yeah, they have the firepower on offense to do it, but it depends on Willie T. He needs to be on.

Jeff, Provo

Does BYU have a reasonable shot at Te'o? I know he has a lot of family there. He would be an amazing signing for us, but is there any hope?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:14 PM)

I wouldn't bet against BYU on it, although I think USC will put on a hard sell as well.

joe (chicago, IL)

has any coach ever had as much success as weis has had in recruiting, who's teams performed so poorly on the field? if weis snags another top 15 class and has another bad season next year, what is it going to take to get him fired?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:15 PM)

It's really not a question anyone can answer realistically because people have only been talking about recruiting rankings for the past seven or eight years. As for the latter, I think he has to win at least nine next year against that soft schedule.

Will (Huntsville, Alabama)

How will Chizik even compete in recuiting at Auburn against Georgia, Alabama, or Florida, which all have WAY better head coaches?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:17 PM)

It'll be uphill, but let's see who he hires on his staff. Kids are going to do what they feel is best for them. Not everyone feels like it's best to play for a given school.

Matt Kent, OH

You surprised with VT making a BCS Bowl? and with everyone not giving respect to VT you consider them the powerhouse of the ACC & a team to contend for a national championship year after year?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:18 PM)

A little given how poorly the year started out... I don't think there is a legit powerhouse in the ACC at this point.

DJ (Cedar Knolls, NJ)

Bruce - getting ready for my Bowl Pick'em pool, are you going to post your picks soon.

Bruce Feldman
  (4:19 PM)

The first batch of picks goes up later this week.

Bryan (Springfield, MO)

Hey Bruce, what's your opinion on the no-hire of Turner Gill by Auburn?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:20 PM)

Honestly, I think Gill is fortunate. In my mind, taking the Auburn job for anyone isn't a good spot right now.

Sylvain (Calgary)

Hey Bruce is it a lock that Greg Hardy is going to skip his senior season and declare for the draft?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:21 PM)

He's an awesome talent. I'd be surprised if he comes back for another year in college.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Where would be a good fit for Turner Gill?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:22 PM)

Maybe if/when UVA comes open next year. Or let's see if Hawkins can get CU into a bowl game next season.

Clay (Oakland, CA)

Is it possible to defend the decision to not even interview Mike Leach after an 11 win season but hire the guy who won only 2 games in the same conference?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:24 PM)

Not sure that wouldve been a great fit, although I'm surprised Washington didn't pay up to get Leach.

Bernard (Princeton, NJ)

JoePa signed a 3 year contract extension today. Surprised? Thoughts?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:24 PM)

Not really.. I'll be surprised when he says he doesn't want to coach any more and decides he wants to take up golf.

Scott (Baton Rouge)

Do you think big-time recruit Russell Shepard will solve our quaterback issue next year at LSU?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:25 PM)

That's asking a lot of a first year QB.. plus the defense also was a big reason for the disappointing season.

Bruce Feldman
  (4:26 PM)

Larry, I probably shouldn't stray into those waters.. And I'd like to think that's not the case.

Clay (Oakland, CA)

Do you know much about Buffalo's returning talent for 2009? Can they repeat as MAC Champs?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:28 PM)

They lose a good QB but they have a stud TB James Starks who is a junior and Naaman Roosevelt the WR is also a junior and the best players on D are all young. So if they find a solid QB and the two skill guys don't bolt, yes.

Bill (Baltimore)

How do you think Shonn Green (Iowa) might do in the NFL?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:29 PM)

I think he'll be a force. He's a power back with good feet who doesn't have a lot of tread on the tire.

Peter (NYC)

Shafer is out in AA, who is there out there to replace him?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:32 PM)

Maybe he goes after DeWayne Walker from UCLA. He's very well thought of in coaching circles. Not sure yet.. I haven't talked to anyone up there.

tom (new york)

Who will take over at qb for the RedRaiders and who will he throw to with the possible loss of recievers such as crabtree?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:33 PM)

Taylor Potts will and Leach is pretty high on him. They have a ton of guys back, but Crabtree will be very tough to replace.

Kennan (Ohio)

Have you heard any indication on who may be the next coach at Miami University?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:34 PM)

I'd heard Curt Mallory the other day, but not sure if that's gonna happen.

JoPa was friends with Bear. Do you think he is afraid to retire because he will end up like Bear did? (decesed about 5 minutes after he took the hat off)

Bruce Feldman
  (4:35 PM)

I wouldn't be surprised if that's part of it.

Kris (Iowa)

You think Green will be a force in the NFL, but you also think he doesn't have a lot of tread on the tires? Seems contradictory to me.. Or do you not know what "doesn't have a lot of tread on the tires" means?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:36 PM)

Sorry.. I goofed that up while texting someone..bad multi-tasking over here.

Zach Rastall (Marinette, WI)

Is there even a chance that Wisconsin beats Florida State?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:37 PM)

Sure, if their big guys handle FSU's big guys I think they have a shot.

Brian (Texas)

Are my questions going through?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:37 PM)

That one did.

Carol Stoops (Norman, OK)

Which team is better, the 2004 Oklahoma Sooners led by Jason White and Adrian Peterson or the 2008 Oklahoma Sooners led by Sam Bradford and DeMarco Murray?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:38 PM)

I think the 08 version is.

tom (new york)

If penn state wins the rose bowl will joe pa retire?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:38 PM)

B (Iowa)

Just wondering who you think Iowa State's coaching list should include?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:40 PM)

Bill Cubit, Brent Venables, Jay Norvell.

Bruce Feldman
  (4:41 PM)

Dan McCarney

Casey (Santa Clarita CA)

Do you agree with McShay and Kiper that Tebow will not be good in the pros?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:42 PM)

I'm really not sure. It's such a different game for QBs. I wouldn't bet against him though.

Sooner (Norman, OK)

Since Sam won the Heisman, do you think most people from ESPN felt bad about it?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:43 PM)

Honestly on the whole, I really don't think people at ESPN care one way or the other.

Brett MS

There have been many preliminary guesses as to where Michael Oher and Peria Jerry would go in the draft. With your knowledge of these two outstanding players, what would be your guess?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:45 PM)

I think Peria is the better player. Now where they get drafted will depend a lot on how they work out, but I still expect Peria to have more of an impact over his career.

Bruce Feldman
  (4:46 PM)

Oher has improved a lot in the last year and gotten stronger, but I think Peria Jerry might be the most underrated defensive player in the country.

is there a rivalry between you guys and the guys from sports

Bruce Feldman
  (4:48 PM)

Yeah, it all started when Stew Mandel dunked on Forde in a pick up game and did some trash talking. It's been outta control ever since. Actually, none. I think we all get along really well especially since you see everyone on the road so much.

Cosmo (Anytown, USA)

Worst uni's in college football?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:49 PM)

Not a fan of some of Cal's.. Best were the ones Army wore in the Navy game.

Clay (Oakland, CA)

how frequently do you update the blog in the offseason?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:50 PM)

Offseason three times a week.

Remorseful Gator Fan (Gainesville, FL)

Do you think Ron Zook deserves a 2006 National Championship Ring from the Florida Gators for recruiting all those great players that Urban Meyer used to win his 1st national title?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:51 PM)

Not a ring, but it's nice to see some UF fans acknowledge him. I've seen coaches who leave a program on probation and get treated better.

GB (Sebring, FL):

Forget the Heisman, who would win in a cage fight between Bradford, McCoy, and Tebow?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:52 PM)

I'll go Tebow on this. If it's any other sport, I'd take Bradford.

Bruce Feldman
  (4:53 PM)

The only QB I might not take Tebow over in the cage fight is Josh Nesbitt although if memory serves Nick Stephens might be a big martial arts guy.

Donald D (Eugene, OR)

Will anyone from UA ever admit running Dick Tomey off was a huge mistake?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:53 PM)

Doubt it, but it's a good point.

Larry (Glendale, CA)

Better match-up...Texas vs. USC in the Fiesta Bowl or the current Rose Bowl match-up?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:55 PM)

I'll say Texas-USC

Rob (Omaha, NE)

Bruce, I'll take Army's QB in a cage match. Call it a hunch.

Bruce Feldman
  (4:55 PM)

Fair enough.

Bradford (Boise, ID)

Bruce, Are you on the TCU bandwagon too? Why does everyone think the Broncos are gonna get rolled? Thanks.

Bruce Feldman
  (4:56 PM)

Nah, I'm staying on the Boise bandwagon.

dan mullen - starkville ms

just found out UM is allowing me to playcall the NC game... good move??

Bruce Feldman
  (4:56 PM)

Yeah, continuity, that's a good thing.

Clay (Oakland, CA)

Who you got in the J-School Bowl in San Antonio?

Bruce Feldman
  (4:57 PM)

Orange Man (NY)

Does Ole Miss have a chance vs.Texas Tech? Many people say it is a good upset pick.

Bruce Feldman
  (4:58 PM)

Only if the Rebels D-line can get a lot of heat Harrell. If not he'll pick their secondary apart (and those DBs are the weak spot of that team)

Mark (Evanston, IL)

Better Journalism school, Northwestern or Mizzou? Or should we just settle it on the field?

Bruce Feldman
  (5:01 PM)

Settle it on the field although I always believed where you go for a program isn't as important ashow well you can think on your feet or how hungry you are.

Bruce Feldman
  (5:01 PM)

three more questions...

Peter Bayer (Colorado)

Did Ohio State really deserve a BCS bowl game?

Bruce Feldman
  (5:02 PM)

I would've taken Boise over OSU but it's a business decision. Boise didn't lose any games and won at Oregon which is a bigger win than anything OSU had this year.

Chris (LA, CA)

Does Terry Bowden get a job this year?

Bruce Feldman
  (5:03 PM)

Does he want Iowa State that bad?

Rob (Baltimore)

So Bruce, what you mean is that Penn State is a better team than both Texas and USC, clearly, and Texas would give USC a better chance of winning, right? Seriously, when will Penn State get credit for being a good football team?

Bruce Feldman
  (5:05 PM)

Nice... unfortunately and this is from something a guy posted in one of my previous chats, even if PSU beats USC a lot of the media will dismiss it as USC not taking the game seriously and that'd be unfair. .. the real issue is the Big Ten image is so far down from the Ohio state BCS losses than the conference desperately needs OSU to beat Texas and PSU to beat SC to restore some of the luster.

Bruce Feldman
  (5:06 PM)

Thanks for all the questions.. sorry I couldn't answer more of them. Send the ones I didn't get to into my blog inbox.
