Chat with Chris Mortensen

Chris Mortensen
  (11:08 AM)

Good morning...let's talk everything.

Oscar El Paso, Tx.

Do you think Woodley, Harrison, & Company will put enough pressure on Flacco to cause him to turn the ball over?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:11 AM)

I think there will be pressure and moreso because LeRon McClain looked very gimpy when he left the Tennessee game. That means Willis McGahee has to come up huge. But Flacco is a very cool customer.

Coach (Austin Tx) [via mobile]

Good Morning Mrm Mortenson. How safe do you think Tony Romo's job is? As a Cowboy Fan, I've grown weary of his late season short comings and am hoping for a change.

Chris Mortensen
  (11:13 AM)

I would give it another two years before you worry about that. He's had 2 1/2 seasons to show. I think there were other negative factors in play this time around and I see Mike Shanahan as the Cowboys coach no later than 2010 and he loves Romo.

Nate Lincoln NE [via mobile]

Chris what are the chances the dolphins get a big time wr? Or what do you see them doin in the offseason?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:14 AM)

I don't see them spending big money on that type of WR. It is a need but we'll see how they fill it. They will certainly address O-line, continue to build the defense, and find a bigger receiver.

Bradley (Key West, FL)

Where will Matt Cassell be playing football this time next year?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:15 AM)

My guess is he'll be with the Patriots.

Mike (AZ)

Chris, how are the Eagles favored in the NFC Champ? I know they lost on Thanksgiving badly but that was a different team, they were on a short week and had to travel coast to coast!

Chris Mortensen
  (11:17 AM)

"They" meaning the Cardinals. Well, you have an Eagles team, coach QB and others, with a lot of playoff experience. The road team has had a lot of success in the playoffs. I think the Eagles should be favored but I would not be surprised with the Cardinals winning. I think the crowd noise will surprise the Eagles. I think the Cards defense - which has some pretty good players - maturing as a unit and we know the offense has weapons.

Kay (indianola Ms) [via mobile]

why do the colt and the titans have to be sore losers? They basically got out played the whole game

Chris Mortensen
  (11:19 AM)

I don't know what you mean by sore losers. Because they had legit complaints about officials? I think the Titans' gripe was more significant and, be honest, they outplayed the Ravens. But Baltimore forced three turnovers and the injury to Titans RB Chris Johnson (which was non contact) was a big blow. The Ravens are worthy, though, and so were the Chargers.

Mike (San Diego)

There's been a lot of talk about the Chargers releasing or trading LT. What are the odds that he'll be back next season?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:21 AM)

It's an interesting question and I would need to hear GM AJ Smith declare that LT is going nowhere before I dismiss the possibility that LT has played his last season in San Diego. I don't know the odds. He may have some trade value but not a first round pick or anything like that.

Shawn (Toronto)

Hi Mort. What are you hearing about Herm Edwards' future today? Also, is it too early to speculate on whether the Chiefs will retain Bill Kuharich to help with draft?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:22 AM)

Herm will be gone if Kirk Ferentz decides to leave Iowa but there's no indication that will happen. Now that Josh McDaniels has been snatched up by Denver, it's always possible Pioli will let Herm coach in '09 to set up his operation, evaluate everything and then determine the future in 2010. I don't know about Kuharich. Usually, they keep the personnel staff in place through the draft, under these circumstances.

ryan tecumseh mi [via mobile]

Hey mort, big cowboys fan and i was wondering what kind of moves jerry jones will make this offseason to help fix the problems

Chris Mortensen
  (11:26 AM)

I think Jerry's biggest task is to face the truth about the worst locker room chemistry in the NFL (and I think he is aware of it) and make a decision on Terrell Owens. Otherwise, getting Felix Jones back & Marion Barber healthy. Maybe getting more depth with the Oline.

Philip (San Diego, CA) [via mobile]

Hey Chris. Do you think deep down Ken Whisenhunt wants to play my Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:28 AM)

I think he would love to play the Steelers for one reason - it would mean he beats the Eagles this Sunday and go to the Super Bowl. No other reasons.

Spivey (Atl)

After the game, does Willie Parker have over 100 yds rushing ?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:29 AM)

I think he will. Parker is healthy and fresh. The Steelers don't have as good an offensive line as the Titans but you saw Chris Johnson get on the edge vs. Ravens with success.

moon (new jersey)

chris are you hearing anything about the giants keeping plaxico?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:31 AM)

Giants GM Jerry Reese was pretty clear that the door is open for Plaxico to return but he's got bigger issues with the law (and consequently the league) depending on how that case concludes.

jake (hanover, nh) [via mobile]

Hey Chris, who do you see starting@QB for the chiefs next year? Do they give Croyle a shot, stick w/Thigpen after some small signs of hope, or go elsewhere whether it be draft or free agency?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:32 AM)

I don't see Croyle in the mix but Thigpen very much so. I think Thigpen looked a lot like Matt Cassel but with a worse team. I'm sure another QB will be in the mix, too.

Ray (Detroit)

Mort, many of the draft experts thinks the lions should draft Matthew Stafford. What do you think? Is he mentally tough enough to be the lions franchise quarterback?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:34 AM)

Matt Stafford has a chance to be another John Elway, so I see him being mentally and physically tough enough. I do think he needs work on all the fundamentals and nuances of the game but it's always a process. My guess is you'll see all the incredible raw talent the first two years with Stafford and then it will start to take off big-time in years three and four, and beyond.

moon (new jersey)

chris do you think Steve Spagnolo will be a head coach next year? if so where?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:36 AM)

Spagnuolo is in the mix with the Jets, Lions, Rams and maybe the Chiefs. But there is a chance he could remain with the Giants. For one, the owners hiring coaches right now are all paying around $2 to $2.5 million (in Spags' range as DC with NY). I think he will only go somewhere he feels is the right situation. I don't know exactly where but maybe the Giants keep him.

mike (az)

any news on the rams head coaching spot? As a cards fan im really hoping they go with jason garrett b/c he has bust written all over him. Not nearly as creative as he is given credit for so id love to see the rams stay in the basement for several more years.

Chris Mortensen
  (11:39 AM)

I think Garrett one day will be a very successful head coach, especially without a TO type to compromise his team. He wasn't creative because you have a guy in TO who is a shaky route runner, doesn't do extra work in film study, and the other WR Roy Williams came in almost midway through the year with a foot injury. They lost Felix Jones and Marion Barber couldn't run the last month. That'll make you look simple.

Andy (LA)

How much did economics effect Bowlen's decsion to hire McDaniels?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:40 AM)

It was a factor. But I think he could have had most of the other candidates in the same ballpark range.

Nick (Saratoga, New York)

Where do you think Rex Ryan is going to end up? He's been so good for so many years. Don't you think if he wants to be a head coach, he'd be one already?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:40 AM)

I will be shocked if Ryan isn't coaching the Jets or maybe the Rams in 2009.

Cooks (oakland)

How much longer until Al names Cable HC? He cannot get anybody better, so might as well name him and give him a chance to fill out his staff before all the good coordinators take other jobs. Any idea on who will be DC?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:41 AM)

I think Kevin Gilbride could move ahead of Cable in this derby. He meets with Al Davis on Thursday. No idea on the rest of the staff.

Rob (Corry, PA)

Do you think Kurt Warner will end up elsewhere after the seasons end regardless of how Arizona finishes?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:42 AM)

I have to believe Warner will be back with the Cardinals or retire. I think he'll be back.

David: Reno, NV [via mobile]

Hey there Mort...big niners fan do you see them improving next season under Singletary?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:43 AM)

I really liked what they did this year but I'd be concerned about the offense as of now. Mike Martz and Singletary were pretty good for each other. I think it may have been a mistake to let Martz go.

Jon (Denver)

Did you see the powerpoint that Bill Romanowki sent to Bowlen? If so, what are your thoughts?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:43 AM)

Nice try, Romo. A for effort, B for bizarre.

Andy (NYC)

Mort, will there be any changes in the Bills coaching staff at all in the offseason or are they going to stay with what they have at this point?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:44 AM)

I've heard they're sticking with their staff, that Dick Jauron really believes their relatively young team needs stability.

Jim Chicago

Is it worth the Bears upgrading at WR to help Orton look better or is it more important to get an elite QB in Chicago and put the below mediocre wide-outs around him?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:45 AM)

I think it's more important to get back to being a dominating defense. Keep building the O-line. The Eagles have "mediocre" wideouts, too, by the same perception. I don't know what they will do with the QB position yet.

Dan (Buffalo, NY)

Mort, how many phone calls to you take/make in a given day? And Browns news?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:47 AM)

So many phone calls that my nose woulldn't stop bleeding for 10 hours on Monday!!! (No I don't talk or hear with my nose). On the Browns, we're just waiting to see if George Kokinis will take the GM job and Mangini will build his staff. I think the most interesting question is what Mangini will do with the QB position - he likes competition. Or do they get an offer for Derek Anderson they can't refuse?

drew in sag harbor

Mort- The Raiders have some great building blocks..depth at RB, young promising (?) QB, shutdown CB...Is there hope?

Ryan (San Diego)

Will Ron Rivera be hired somewhere as a coach this year? I'm really hoping he stays in San Diego for one more year with Merriman coming back

Chris Mortensen
  (11:50 AM)

Ron is going to get a chance to interview in Detroit but I think he'll be back in San Diego.

Dan (Buffalo, NY)

Mort, reports in Cleveland say that Randy Lerner didn't want to talk to Floyd Reese because he was too old. Any truth? Any chance they hire someone to watch over all Football Operations like Parcells in Miami?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:52 AM)

That's age discrimination. Age is what you make of it. Look at some of the best defensive coordinators in the NFL over the past several years - Dick LeBeau, Monte Kiffin and Jim Johnson. All nearing 70 and coaching is more taxing than personnel, for the most part. It's ridiculous that some of the guys who are available in personnel can't even get a sniff. I think it's negligent and age disciminatory.

John (Watertown, NY)

I know the Raiders still have a bunch of needs, but ultimately what do you see them doing in the draft? Do you think they make a play for Crabtree or grab a #1 WR via FA?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:54 AM)

The Raiders have some cap problems and made a huge mistake with Javon Walker. Maybe a TO will be available!! Otherwise, Crabtree would make sense but it remains to be seen whether he's truly evaluated as a top 5 talent.

Nick: (Saratoga, New York)

Mort, do you think Tim tebow can pull off being a solid NFL QB? it seems like he can do anything. why wouldn't a team want a guy like him? A guy with an amzing ability to effect the play of his teammates positively. Don't you think every team wants a guy like him?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:56 AM)

Yes, I'm among those who think Tebow can be a solid QB in the NFL and everybody likes terrific football players. But don't over-reach on him being able to impact the play of his teammates. He will have to prove he can play big-time before anyone would embrace that kind of leadership. Trust me.

jerry (tucson, az) [via mobile]

Hello mort. if kurt warner can lead the cards to the super bowl has he just got himself a new deal? and what do u do matt leinart?

Chris Mortensen
  (11:57 AM)

I think Warner deserves a new deal but I would not trade Leinart yet. He is financially affordable.

Jon (NY, NY)

Do you remember when you said that Matt Jones would be a dominant NFL player? What happened?

Chris Mortensen
  (12:00 PM)

I also knew that Matt's biggest enemy would be himself and I bet on the idea Matt would dedicate himself. He did not. Now, in his first two years, he was among the top 3 productive WRs in his rookie class. Year 3 was awful - he rebelled against coaching change at his position. And this year he led the team. But he has not become a dominant player because he lacks the work ethic and desire and obviously he has been influenced off the field. Maybe the light will come on but right now, he's just an average-plus wideout.

Mark (NJ)

Mort, you have pull w/the big wigs in the NFL right? So why haven't we ever seen an option to view the game in a vertical fashion? Like how you watch game tape. Would be a neat option to see the field the way the QB does. Any hope?

Chris Mortensen
  (12:02 PM)

I don't have that kind of pull but I have always felt games could give us those looks and make us understand better what the QB is seeing or not seeing. But they like close-ups and they spend an awful lot of time with graphics. I think they should consider what you're talking about.

Nick: (Saratoga, New York)

Do you think, regardless of the outcome in the Steelers-Ravens game, that the Ravens will be good next year, and after that?

Chris Mortensen
  (12:05 PM)

Yes. Ozzie Newsome's track record as a GM has proven consistent and his next challenge is to keep the defensive personnel at a high level and obviously find another WR for Flacco. I like Harbaugh as HC, Cam Cameron as OC (great job by Cam), and now I'm sure they will have to find a capable DC for Ryan. But all in all, the Ravens should remain competitive and playoff-caliber next year.

steve detroit [via mobile]

do you think marinelli learned his lesson or is he still gonna go after tampa's defensive rejects?

Chris Mortensen
  (12:06 PM)

Rod Marinelli won't be making personnel decisions with the Bears. He will be the D-line coach.

Sean (Philly)

Mort, I have Chris Johnson, Ray Rice, Jonathan Stewart and Kevin Smith in a keeper league. Which two will be better over the next several years?

Chris Mortensen
  (12:07 PM)

My guess Johnson, Stewart, Smith and Rice, in that order. Smith could leapfrog the other guys.

Chris Mortensen
  (12:07 PM)

Dave (Boston, MA)

Mort, What is your prediction for this weekend's AFC and NFC Championship Games? Will Boldin play this weeknd?

Chris Mortensen
  (12:09 PM)

I haven't had time to analyze the games yet because of all the coaching/GM activity. Been that way for 6 weeks. But I'm thinking we'll have an all Pennsylvania final. Prepared for anything, though. Will pick for sure in a couple of days.

Chris Mortensen
  (12:10 PM)

All right, gotta run. We'll have our radio show Fridaynight again from 7-9 ET. Sunday Countdown at 11 am ET and it should be a blast. Good luck to all your teams and God Bless!
