Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:01 PM)

Good afternoon. Thanks for coming. Let's get started...

T-man Nashville, TN

Just gotta get it off my chest . . . Vince Young trade for Calvin Johnson . . . Hey I can dream can't I??? (Thanks Chief!)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

Vince Young and how many first-round picks? Bad dream...

Bartleby (Miami, FL)

Is there any insight as to what the Colts have planned to do with Marvin Harrison's overwhelming contract. I want to believe they will cut him with the intention with resigning at a lower price. But are Polian and Caldwell possibly debating dropping MH from the Colt's plans altogether?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

Possible they'd drop him, but they will be very diplomatic. Better for all if they can negotiate down. Cut and bring back is difficult, especially where so much pride is involved....

Barrett From Nashville

Hey Paul, Why is it that Jeffrey Fisher avoids almost all negative repercussion from his failure to win the big one? Only 2 playoff wins in the last decade ain't that good of a record. It seems like any other town would boot him regardless of the regular season records over that same time period. What gives with this gibrone? Thanks for your great work at ESPN by the way. Keep it Mild! Barrett

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

Here is why you perceive it that way, I think. A game like the Baltimore game, they had excellent plans on both sides of the ball. LenDale and Alge fumble, Bironas misses, the D can't get a turnover and Pro-Bowler Hope has a bad day. Of that list, what was Fisher's fault? I think they are now an underachieving playoff team, but so are a lot of teams. There is one coach in the AFC with a big time playoff record. There is one coach in the AFC with a Super Bowl title. (Actually, three.)

DJ;Houston,TX

Watz good Mr. Kuharsky? Im a huge Baltimore Raven Fan...Do u think we can win it all?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

No. Too limited on offense. This D is good, but not like 2000...

Dave (Canada)

have any teams stated publicly that they are interested in Haynesworth, Collins or Scaife?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

No one can publicly state anything about players still under contract, so no...

Danny, Nashville, TN

Paul - great stuff in print and on the radio. Where do you rate the Titans' odds of keeping Brandon Jones? Is he an RFA or unrestricted?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

UFA. If he's cheap he's back, if someone bites, they will not overpay for him. Nor should they. Can't play a full load and be effective. Reasonable third guy in their system...

Dave (Canada)

I'm sure that like most people you had a bad weekend of picking games. Did you at least have Springsteen winning the Golden Globe?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

I did and caught it live. Rourke is freakish. But I wanna see the flick...

Dan, Mt. Juliet, TN

Paul...if we lose Jim Schwartz in TN, any chance we'd lose Coach Washburn, too?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

No. Washburn is loyal to Fisher and loves it here. Fisher can offer something Schwartz can't -- stability...

Hosie Holomon III (Nashville, Tn)

What is the likelyhood that Lendale and Alge would have fumbled, had the football been one of those hot turkey legs they sell at LP Field?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

Don't be shy Hosie, state your full name, then deliver your joke...

JB (TX)

In a season full of mistakes, I think VY's first and greatest one was spending a bulk of the offseason in Austin instead of with his new OC. Any word on his plans for this offseason?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

Well if he wants any standing he better be around. Fisher hit that like five times in the press conference. Last year they loved that he was out of town, but now the most important thing is that he's here full time. Funny how different that is, no?

Braeden (Michigan)

Should Detroit trade their first overall for a later 1st and (2nd or 3rd)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

Easier said than done. There is no must-have player and people generally want out of the top six or 10, not into it because if you miss the contracts are hard to swallow....

Steve (Syracuse)

If schwartz is to go to Detroit and become head coach, any fear he brings Albert Haynesworth with him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

They'd have to outbid people by a ton. Albert's not a Detroit guy I assure you...

JB (TX)

So now the Gregg Williams is in NO who is the lead candidate for DC (assuming Schwartz is gonzo)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

McGinnis or Cecil...

Tim (Houston)

Hi Paul, What are your thoughts on Frank Bush and the Texans playoff hopes next year? Thanks, Tim

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

I don't know him, I can't be critical. He's who Kubiak wanted the first time. But from the outside, you have to think new blood is what they need. Let's hope the new D-line coach has no family or Denver connection... And without some personnel, no one is going to do very well there...

Dan, Mt. Juliet, TN

If the Titans are able to re-sign Big Al and Kerry C, does that significantly impair their ability to go after a guy like TJ Houshmanzadeh?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

Not financially. But I wouldn't expect them to chase Housh...

West Warwick, RI

I say, when it's a turnpike superbowl, lets play it halfway between. Beaver Stadium holds 110,000 people and even with the cold....it WOULD be filled. Plus that is football weather. Happy Valley, in Feb.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

That would be a scene...

Steve (Syracuse)

Is JMac out of town? He wasnt even watching the game from the bench this past saturday...even the announcers picked that up.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

If a guy is trying not to throw up after a concussion, does his head need to be in the game? Injured guys get the benefit of the doubt -- McCareins was bad this season and they need to upgrade. But we have no idea what his state was at that point... Same with CJ, who is taking way too much grief. Why, exactly, would he want out of that game?

Jake (Hilton Head, SC)

Maybe I am merely being stupid here, but if Schwartz leaves, what's the harm in making Washburn the DC? Is he not a DC kinda guy? More one position or what?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

He's not a DC kind of guy. And what's better, a good contract and security under Fisher in a place you like with guys you helped pick and grow, or a bigger title, maybe a money bump and a move to Detroit where the talent is bad?

Riley Grant (Aurora)

If the Broncos were to chase Big A, would they become a contender?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

I think they will chase him. I think their defensive concerns cannot be fixed with one guy. He'd be a start...

Dan (Nutley, NJ)

During the game, they spent a few minutes showing Justin McCareins sitting on the bench with a pouty look on his face. They were commenting on how bad his body language was and how he wasn't even watching the game. Is there anything to this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

He's always had terrible body language. I believe he also had a head injury when he was out of the game. I was hoping they'd actually pulled him, but it's not like Paul Williams was an upgrade...

ALAN(INDY)

Colts need a DT(always do)WR(especially if Marvin is let go)O-Line(preferably one who can run block). With the low draft spot they have which need do yousee with the first pick(or do they just take the best player available)?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

I think the kind of DTs that can work for them aren't necessarily first-day guys. I think Ugoh should be on the hot seat and that OT or WR may be priority....

Dave (Canada)

I've heard some talk of the NFL getting rid of the salary cap in 2010. Can you shed some light on this and what it might do to teams with less wealthy owners?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

Under the current deal, 2010 is an uncapped year. It's a CBA device to force them to negotiate a new CBA, because all involved know once it went away it wouldn't come back...

Jake (Hilton Head, SC)

Is it just me, or is Schwartz crazy if he goes, yeah I know Head Coaching opportunity....but do you wanna send you kids to school in Nashville or Detroit? Enough Said!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

I find Detroit to be nicer than it's reputation, if you can come to terms with the weather...

Dan, Mt. Juliet, TN

It's early I know, but where do the Titans look in the 1st round of the draft? Upgrades at LB? Last time they took an LB with a lower 1st rd pick it turned out pretty good...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

Best available. With leanings to DT if Albert is gone and WR. A lot from there depends on what happens in FA....

Evan B (Parker, CO)

Say the Lions trade their 2nd round pick for Champ Bailey, is that a good deal?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

I'd take the Champ side if he is healthy...

Jeff (Nashville)

Paul, who looks like the front runner for AFC south champs next season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

Colts and Titans will slug it out. Houston a notch behind, maybe in Wild Card hunt if they add the right people on defense. Jags need some time....

Evan B (Parker, CO)

What do you think of rookies getting paid more than veterans before they've even played a game?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

It's 10 or 15 rookies really. The salaries top of the draft is an issue for sure. But you make it sound like a second-rounder is outearning a Pro Bowler, and he's not...

steve (Mass)

do you see the cowboys really releasing TO,what would be their plan after that and who would you see making a play for TO

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

They should release him. And any team that signed him to something longer than a year would just be asking to implode...

Blueman(IND)

Colts could realy use Sproles.(I know it ain't gonna happen)Any chance they will sign or draft a big play threat? They haven't had a top flight return man forever and really could use someone who can score on a short pass/long run.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

Depends on how they evaluate Addai. I suspect his down year will be chalked up to injuries and O-line struggles...

Jared, Minot ND

If you could take one player to start a franchise from this weekends games who would it be?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

Probably Big Ben, though he'd be instructed not to hold the ball so long so often...

Jake (Minnesota)

What do the Packers have to do to recapture the NFC North next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

Rebuild defensively and establish an identity. I was surprised by their fade and think, in that division, a quick turnaround is absolutely possible...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

Regarding if college Player X is a good fit for Team Y, I've got nothing for you, sorry. Will be awhile before I am up to speed on college talent, and you can find way actual draft experts in these chats...

Jake (Minnesota)

How do you think Aaron Rodgers progresses next season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

I thought he was good, think he'll be better and put little blame for the overall failures on him...

Terence Fails Nashville TN

Paul, was Chris Carr wanting playing time next year at CB or the nickel?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

I would t5hink situational. Silly to think he'd be a starting CB. And if Fuller is back, and they should sign him, Carr is the dime at best and they played little dime in 08....

Dave (Canada)

With Fred Taylor seemingly on his way out should the Jags get an every down back to split the load with MoJo in order to prolong his career or should they just get a change of pace back and give MoJo the majority of the carries?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

"Change of pace" is tricky. I'd get a complimentary guy with a different skill set and expect MJD to take 55 or 60 percent of the carries and the new guy to get the bulk of the rest...

Blueman(IND)

With the mess that went down this season in J-Ville,would M.Holmgren be a possibility, would be good on the field and help the front office.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

They've reorganized. Are you talking about next year? I think he can do better and I think he's a far better coach than GM....

Erik (Salt Lake City, UT)

Now after 3 seasons can we finally say that VY winning the ROY was a mistake and just another QB loving media mishap?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

That VY has busted since his rookie year doesn't wash away his rookie year. He was still pretty good that season and it was hard to make a better case for anyone else... The award does not come from the AP with a note that says you are obligated to be good going forward. It's for what you did, not what you are going to do...

Randy(Knoxville)

With the A.Boldin trade rumors any chance Titans would be a player in possible deal?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

Use history as your gauge. How often have they stepped out to do something bold at receiver?

vanessa (memphis,tn)

What were the top 5 nfl defenes of the 2008 season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

By yards: PIT, BAL, PHI and WAS... Three of four still alive...

Ben, Miami FL

How difficult is it to beat a team 3 times in one season, has it ever been done before?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

Titans did it to Jags in 1999 with third game on the road, which i believe was a first. Hard but not impossible...

Terence Fails (Nashville)

Anything to the blowup between Lendale White and Ahmard Hall last week? Who do you think is Chris Johnson's change of pace back next year? And how seriously do you take Lendale White's vow to get in shape for next season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

Hall said it was typical in-game stuff, he had one assignment, LenDale saw something different and they exchanged words about it. This stuff happens weekly and people like it to be investigated by the Feds... LenDale's around for another year and I expect he had that role. I think he will be more serious about shape, but still not serious enough....

Dave (Canada)

The AFC South will play 16 games vs. the NFC West next year. How many wins will they get?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

A lot. But things turn fast. Watch Seattle or SF be really good out of nowhere...

Erik (Salt Lake City, UT)

If Reggie Bush had achieved the rookie numbers that Maurice Jones-Drew did, would he have been ROY instead of VY?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

We want to play pretend? If I threw for more yard than VY, would I have won?

Tom (River North)

Paul, I've seen a number of chatters ask about Boldin going here and there, but considering he's under contract for another year and seems to be very loyal to his teammates, I don't think he's going anywhere. You?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

Nowhere. Why would you mess with that formula even if he's moaning?

Luke (South Bend, IN)

Do you see the Colts moving out of the Cover 2 now that Dugy is gone and Meeks is a head coaching candidate elsewhere? Caldwell is more of an offensive guy, and the defense could be up in the air.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

Why, if their personnel is tailored to that, would the new coach having an offensive background mean some huge change for the D?

Nick Johnson (Washington)

What do you think about the firing of Shanahan?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

Bold. I think he was stale. I like the new guy, but why hire the next Shanny when D has been the issue for so long?

brad (Austin)

Should the Titans experiment next year with lendale at full back? It really was annoying when they would try to give him carries and he would only stumble forward for a couple yards. He could be taught blocking schemes and would give defenses confusion as to what to expect if he ever plays like he did 2 years ago

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

No. He's a running back, he's not a fullback. And they have a good fullback. Guys rarely change positions in the league, and with the Titans I can't think of one significant move with a guy who actually played... Did you also think Mike Williams could light it up as a tight end?

Nick Johnson (Washington)

Do you think the AFL will fold?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

One can hope...

JB (TX)

PK, what's the chat sched gonna be like out of season? Still weekly?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

Not sure yet. But I think we'll go through Super Bowl and then see. Will keep you posted in the blog...

Dylan Blackburn (Jonesboro, IN)

So I saw that you dont think Baltimore has what it takes to win the super bowl. My question is...how much offense do they need to win it? The Pitt/Balt game wont be high scoring...and they already putt McNabb on the bench once this year. I just dont understand your reasoning here.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

My reasoning is that they made three or four big plays on offense against the Titans... And I don't think they win twice more with three or four big plays. And I think a rookie QB, who's been excellent, eventually has a bad game... I am allowed to think the Steelers are better...

Don Nashville, TN

Why are you not more competitive in your fantasy leagues?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

I need to hire a consultant to get to the bottom of this... This year it was drafting Brady, though I traded Edwards for Rivers and should have been able to survive it. I hit home runs with Slaton and Daniels, but was a RB short... The year before I scored very well but kept getting beat by even better days... I don't do enough at RB in first four or five rounds, I think...

Nick Johnson (Washington)

Your answers are pretty gloomy, did you drink coffee today?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

Diet Coke. I'm Paul, nice to meet you. I'm not a rainbows and unicorns and chocolate sprinkles guy, generally. Unless I am at the dog park with my pup or Avon on the Jersey shore or with my pals in Vegas...

Erik (Salt Lake City, UT)

LOL! Yeah my friends all tell me the same thing but I just have a hard time letting it go since I am an obvious fan of MJD. On to other things how hard is it for an o-lineman (Vince Manuwai) to recover from ACL surgery? Is it as easy as for a QB or more like an RB?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

Easier than skill guys as he doesn't have to cover nearly as much ground. I would think he'd be ready to roll come camp...

JB (TX)

What do you think about the Pro Bowl moving to the week before the Super Bowl? I think they'll have even more dropouts then they currently do. If the whole game just went away would anyone miss it?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

I agree. The ninth RB could start and then be a Pro Bowler. Name the team. Do away with the game., Have a big skills competition -- fastest, strongest, most accurate -- and a big banquet...

Adam (Columbia, TN)

How you doin Paul?? I think the Titans should resign Big Al, resign Collins yet let him and VY know that if VY gives his 100% effort and shows improvement and has a better offseason (offseason program, training camp, preseason) that he has a chance at the starting job. Collins would be my starter going in to next season with things subject to change. Resign the role players (Scaife, Fuller, E.King, Bironas) then look at CB in the first round or possibly DT if they dont resign Big Al? What do you think???

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

So re-sign everyone, give VY a chance? Not real realistic...

Jason (Bmore)

Please hate on the Steelers like last week. It brings good luck.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

Because I said SD could win was hating? C'mon Jason, that's a little thin skinned, no?

Baltimore

Three or four big plays is all the teams that beat the Ravens this year had. That is all you need

Blueman(INDY)

Heard anything about Jeff Saturday?Rumor at the start of the season was he was to expensive to keep and he had some injury problems this year. But the o-line was really bad without him.Which way do you see them going with him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

Would be hard to move forward without him. Very valuable in what they do. Imagine they pray there isn't much of a market for him. But I think you have to pony up and see if he'd be willing to do a two-year deal...

Terence Fails (Nashville)

Paul, do you see Jim Schwartz taking any Titans staff to Detroit?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

A young assistant names Matt Burke. Maybe Marcus Robertson. I don't think much -- guys have great security and loyalty with Fisher...

Sykesville, MD

Hey Paul... what would you say if I told you Baltimore is going to shut out the Steelers on Sunday?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

I'd say you are an unreasonable fan with ridiculous expectations...

jon- louisiana

im a saints fan and they just hired greg williams as their new d coordinator..you think theres any chance he can turn their defense around while brees is still playing lights out and they can go all the way?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

I think if they turn it over to him he can do good things, especially if the DEs show they've still got it and they add some pieces. It's a good hire...

Luke (South Bend, IN)

Dungy worked heavily on the defensive side of the ball. Now that his help is gone I think they'll really struggle if they stay Cover 2. I thought maybe Caldwell would consider hiring a 3-4 guy or a heavy blitzer as his next DC.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

Has Meeks left? The transition to a 3-4 takes time. They can contend now. Why would they slow themselves down like that when they have two top flight DEs in Freeney and Mathis?

Bill (HOU)

Matt Shaub a playoff caliber QB or just keeping the spot warm until they can find "the man"?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

They think he is the man, which is all that matters. We need to see him play 16 games...

steve (Mass)

BREAKING NEWS Jim Schwartz is the coach in detroit-good fit, dont know much about him

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

I wish him luck. Smart guy who will put people in position to succeed.. Needs to be thick-skinned to criticism...

Rockett - Herndon, VA

Do you think the titans will move towards VY as early as next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

No I don't. I think it'll be status quo or close and that he'll be gone in 2010...

Wade Nashville

I am still baffled by all the calls for VY. What causes this mass mind set that thinks you make QB changes to a 13-3 team? (Unless forced due to KC departure.)

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

Wade, if you could research and get me an answer to that, I will hire you. It's crazy how steady the flow of this is, isn't it?

Adam (Columbia, TN)

Hear me out Paulie - KC was very good this year for our team. He says make me the starter or im going to the farm. He earned it, i agree. BUT look at the numbers 2676 yds 12 TDs 7 picks, VY's numbers in 07 - 2546 yds 9 TDs 17 picks but also had 400 yds rushing with 3 tds. However he had Mr. Consertative (Chow) running the offense plus no CJ in the backfield. You saw just like everyone else what our offense looked like with Lendale in the backfield the 2nd half of the Ravens game. I just dont think you automatically say Collins is my starter for the 09 season. I say you resign him letting him know that things could be subject to change esp if VY gives his 100% effort!!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

And VY will be dedicated and good all of a sudden because _______? Fill in the blank...

Jason (Bmore)

Looks like this upcoming draft is going to be a great one for RB's. Moreno, Wells, MCcoy, Greene...They could all end up being studs. Do you see the texans having their eye on one of these guys, as to lighten the load for slaton?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Defense first. But a bigger RB to use with Slaton would be good...

Blueman(INDY)

Will J-Ville ever sign a big time wr and can the defense bounce back after a poor season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

Who's a big time receiver? People talk like there is this long list out there to be signed. Housh is the one big proven guy who's going to be a UFA. Jax took a shot with Porter and it was a disaster... I think DT is a priority and the Jags are going to need time to get it turned around...

Leah

I just want to say that I'm not worried at all about the switch to Caldwell. He has the support of Dungy, Jim Irsay, Bill Polian, Peyton, Reggie, everyone. I'm not worried at all and in fact, I'm very optimistic and have a good feeling. Colts fans, calm down! Give the guy a chance. I trust Bill Polian who is one of the most knowledgeable people in football.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

Very sensible. No reason not to give the guy a chance. Continuity with a team like that is key...

Rockett - Herndon, VA

Any way you see VY playing another position? All that talent seems terrible to waste. Best College player I have seen in my life. No future with the NFL after 2010?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

No way at all. See earlier response about position changes...

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

Well folks, time for me to write a blog entry on Jim Schwartz. Thank you for coming. Hope to see you next week. And I will be chatting from 11-11:30 ET Monday as part of a day long chat fest once we know the Super Bowl matchup. Please stop by... Enjoy the games, hit the mailbag any time... Cheers!
