Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (5:31 PM)

MW here from Mobile at the Senior Bowl. If you want to talk NFL or Senior Bowl, either is cool with me. Let's roll.

isaiah toms river new jersey [via mobile]

How do you think edgerrin james and hightower are going to do against the steelers defense

Matt Williamson
  (5:31 PM)

Not well. Not well at all. I really think PGH's run defense will be too overwhelming.

Carey nashvill tn [via mobile]

Who will k c chiefs draft

Matt Williamson
  (5:32 PM)

They need plenty, but to me, the number one need has to be a DE to get after QBs. They just never came close to replacing J Allen and their pass rush was awful.

mat, Charlotte [via mobile]

How will the steelers attempt to defend Larry Fitzgerald?

Matt Williamson
  (5:33 PM)

I have no idea. Right now, it seems like an almost impossible task. Phil pressed him and also played off-he torched them. Car played a lot of Cover 2-he torched them. The key is rushing Warner.

Steiny (NYC)

There have been reports that the Dallas Cowboys are interested in Ray Lewis. What are the chances he ends up a Dallas Cowboy?

Matt Williamson
  (5:34 PM)

Hard to say. I could certainly see Jerry Jones being interested in his fantasy football world of NFL personnel. One leader isn't going to change the whole persona of a team full of selfish players. However, I just don't see Lewis ever leaving Balt.

Kyle (wisconsin) [via mobile]

What do you think the jacksonville jaguars will do with the #8 pick in the draft?

Matt Williamson
  (5:35 PM)

I would bet they look at OT first and foremost. Their interior OL should be better once the starters return from injury, but Barnes has been a big problem. A true #1 WR would be great as well.

Steiny (NYC)

Jason Campbell wants a long-term deal. Do you think he will get it?

Matt Williamson
  (5:37 PM)

That is a tough one. I like him. But it is just so hard to judge him as he has a new coordinator nearly EVERY year. Makes it just too hard to see how he is really maturing as a player. Also, I really don't think that he is an ideal West Coast QB either. More of a strong armed down the field guy. So that might not be the best marriage.

Eric (Sioux City)

Could BJ Raji play NT in a 34? Green Bay is going to need one.

Matt Williamson
  (5:38 PM)

He has been incredible down here. The North O couldn't even run plays this morning in the team portion because he was blowing everything up. Is he a Wilfork/Hampton type two gapper? Not sold on that. More of a penetrator. But still, I do think he would be okay in that role, but not the best way to use him.

Matt Williamson
  (5:39 PM)

Also, is it a done deal that GBay goes to a 3-4? Honestly, it doesn't make much sense at all considering their personnel. Would waste Kampman to some degree. Same with Jenkins.

Mike philadelphia pa [via mobile]

What round will the eagles take a RB?

Matt Williamson
  (5:41 PM)

Philly has two first round picks and it wouldn't shock me if they went RB with one of them. A physical guy. Depending what happens in free agency with their OTs, they probably need one of those (maybe two) as a top priority though-so second round is more likely. WR would be very hard to pass on as well.

Bryton (CA)

hey, who do u thnik the niners will draft? and what are their needs?

Matt Williamson
  (5:43 PM)

I can live with Hill behind center, but adding one more top notch linemen on O would be huge-especially at RT. A true #1 WR is an obvious need. I don't love their secondary either and a CB and FS could be in order.

Sal (Allentown)

I would like to see the Eagles take two OTs in the 1st, Oher and either Britton or Beatty. Then get a bruiser like Shonn Greene in the 2nd.

Matt Williamson
  (5:44 PM)

Hard to argue with that. I would assume that one of their OTs will be resigned though. Plus, many differing opinions on Oher. He might be long gone. Don't forget about WR though.

Vad [via mobile]

Will matt still be the seahawks QB next season?

Matt Williamson
  (5:45 PM)

Oh I think so. Not time to give up on him yet.

Richard (Eagle River, AK)

How do you see the Broncos moving their D personnel around if they do indeed switch to a 3-4?

Matt Williamson
  (5:46 PM)

I think it is almost an impossible task in one off season. Brutal. I don't see anyone who can excel at NT or DE---that is a problem! Crowder might develop at DE though in time. As for OLBs-Moss and Dumerville? Okay, I don't think that is a terrible start, but do you trust either one to play in coverage at all? I don't. They still need safeties in a big way too.

Tom (Bethlehem,PA) [via mobile]

Who do you think the Texans will take with their first few picks?

Matt Williamson
  (5:48 PM)

Very easy really. D. DL and DBs. I can live with the LBs, but they need to find two playmakers-one up front and one on the backend. DE would be nice opposite Mario. Also a true run stuffing NT would go a long way.

Chris Firebaugh, California [via mobile]

If Warner retires do u see the Cardinals looking @ Matt Cassell to start next year.

Matt Williamson
  (5:49 PM)

Gotta go with Leinhart. Too early to forget about him.

Eric (Sioux City)

How's Larry English been doing? Is he stout enough for RDE or will he be moved to rush LB?

Matt Williamson
  (5:50 PM)

He looks very good. Edge player with some pass rush juice. Stock is rising. He does look more like a 3-4 OLB to me though than a strict DE.

Nonsense

Shouldn't these teams moving to the 3-4 1st have the personnel to do so? Denver didn't have enough good LBs for a 4-3. And it makes less sense for GB, because it is a bad switch for their best player, Kampman.

Matt Williamson
  (5:50 PM)

I couldn't agree more. Foolish in my opinion. Really sets you back and it isn't an overnight transition.

Scott (OKC)

How has Brian Robiskie looked?

Matt Williamson
  (5:51 PM)

Very solid. Not spectacular, but it is so apparent that he has been coached well since a young age. Gets it. I see him as a starting #2 in the league. Solid.

Steve (GB)

At what point do the Packers give up on AJ Hawk. While not horrible, he is worth near what he's being paid. And he is terrible in coverage.

Matt Williamson
  (5:53 PM)

Another very good example of someone who doesn't fit the 3-4 either. Must be protected and is not a take on ILB.

Bryan cincinnati, ohio [via mobile]

What will the bengals do with thier pick. with issues wit t.j and all is it for sure a tackle is our pick or could it be a wide out or more help on the other side of the ball.

Matt Williamson
  (5:54 PM)

Hard to predict the WR situation. LJ could get Franchised. Gotta think that 85 is out-and should get some draft picks in return. They did use high picks on WR last year. I wouldn't overlook a big time pass rusher either, but OL is probably the top priority, especially at OT and OC.

Jeff (OK)

I know the pro-bowl is a joke, but how did Kerry Collins make it ahead of Pennington?

Matt Williamson
  (5:55 PM)

That is a joke.

New York, NY [via mobile]

Are we looking at another underdog upset or is the Steelers too much to handle?

Matt Williamson
  (5:55 PM)

Picked PGH to win a close one. I just think Zona's inability to run the ball will be more than they can overcome.

Brad (AZ)

Matt, would you trade Boldin? He has been the face of the franchise and a very good receiver; but his game is limited to bubble screens and drag routes. I would take a 1st rounder and move Breaston and Doucet up the depth chart.

Matt Williamson
  (5:56 PM)

I would as well. Might even get more than a #1. A LOT of teams could use someone like Boldin. He isn't worth Fitz money and just is hurt way too much. I agree with your plan and would add one more WR via the draft in the top few rounds.

SHAUN FROM DETROIT MICHIGAN [via mobile]

WHAT DO U THINK THE LIONS WILL DO WITH THERE TWO FIRST ROUND PICKS?

Matt Williamson
  (5:57 PM)

Well, they certainly are not short on needs. Going QB first overall seems logical in this case if they are sold on one of the juniors. I would address the OL more in free agency, especially at OG. The D needs just about everything!

Eddie [via mobile]

Assuming that tom brady will be 100% next season, what do you think matt cassel will do in his future?

Matt Williamson
  (5:58 PM)

I think he will be franchised and then yield some very valuable draft picks in return. Remember, they did use a rather high pick on O'Connell in the last draft. The D is what needs work and Cassel will help get that fixed.

Scott (okc)

Favorite player to watch at the Senior Bowl?

Matt Williamson
  (5:59 PM)

Raji or the USC LBs. Clay Mathews Jr. is much better than I expected.

Jerry (Oshkosh)

Do the Packers need to draft a TE or would you give Jermichael Finley a chance?

Matt Williamson
  (6:00 PM)

The TE situation isn't ideal, but I wouldn't go crazy there considering all their other needs-esp if they do switch to a 3-4.

Trawden uk [via mobile]

What do you make of cameron wake, he just joined the dolphins. a good fit opposite porter? They must be big on him, they gave him the dollar

Matt Williamson
  (6:01 PM)

I wouldnt get too excited. I realize he tormented QBs in Canada, but that is a VERY different league. However, I do very much trust Parcells in these type of siutionas.

KC in KC

What do you think of Jamaal Charles? Everyone dismisses him as a situational back; but that's what they said about Portis, Westbrook, DeAngelo Williams, Priest Holmes, etc.

Matt Williamson
  (6:02 PM)

I hear ya and I do like what he does. Still, he isn't as sturdy as those guys. But, I do think 15 per game isn't out of the question.

Ty17TacomaWashington [via mobile]

Do you think mark sanchez should've stayed one more year?

Matt Williamson
  (6:04 PM)

Nah. Don't get me wrong, it has to be tough to leave such an environment, but he is going to be a very high pick. Hard to argue with that too.

EDDYMON HONOLULU [via mobile]

WHAT ARE TAMPAS NEEDS THIS OFFSEASON AND WHO WILL THEY DRAFT?

Matt Williamson
  (6:05 PM)

QB is a mess with Garcia up for free agency. I still think WR is huge, even if they do resign AB. As for D needs, they are all up front. Two more DL to rotate in would make everyone on that D much better.

Randall [via mobile]

what will plaxico burress see in his future?

Matt Williamson
  (6:07 PM)

A trade or his release. His time with the Giants has to be over.

easton pa [via mobile]

will Herm Edwards get fired before draft

Matt Williamson
  (6:08 PM)

Honestly, I don't really think he is a very good HC, but what they are doing to him is just wrong. Stringing him along.

houston [via mobile]

Which of the 3 linebackers from usc will go 1st in draft and why?

Matt Williamson
  (6:08 PM)

I would have to say RM-he is just the most explosive of the group. The biggest game changer. Instant impact.

clint ,texarkana [via mobile]

what are dallas' needs this off season?and who or what positions do you anticipate they'll draft?

Matt Williamson
  (6:09 PM)

If they part ways with TO, WR jumps to the top of the list. ILB in place of Thomas makes sense, as does one more DE/DL. Not glaring needs though. A backup QB is a must.

Danny sandiego california [via mobile]

Hey what do you think is going to happen to lt and are the chargers going to be a good team next season

Matt Williamson
  (6:11 PM)

Getting Merriman back will go a very long way for that D. As for LT, I bet they let him go, resign Sproles and draft a bigger RB in the 3rd round or so. Good team? Yeah, I do think so. More of Rivers team than ever. Still, that division is awful and that helps.

Chapel Hill NC

What do you think the Panthers can get for Julius Peppers, assuming they place the franchise tag on him?

Matt Williamson
  (6:12 PM)

Quite a bit, but if they franchise Peppers, they probably lose J Gross.

Cal C. Isfun (Pittsburgh, PA)

Hey Matt, I was wondering who do you think is more likely to return to the Superbowl next year. Steelers or Cardinals?

Matt Williamson
  (6:12 PM)

PGH-VERY solid foundation there. Warner is a free agent. Boldin could leave.

Bigman (Knoxville Tn) [via mobile]

How will Indy do without Dungy and what do they do with Harrison?

Matt Williamson
  (6:13 PM)

I think they will remain very competitive without Dungy. Some top notch coaches and Peyton are all still in place. As for Marvin, it is time to cut ties. Adios.

ben pequannock [via mobile]

with the eagles with no big play receiver with height will they go out in free angency and pick someone up like a chad johnson

Matt Williamson
  (6:14 PM)

They could also make a play for Boldin with that extra first rounder. They really need a #1 WR.

Joel , Bellingham MA [via mobile]

Who do you think is the best player in he NFL?

Matt Williamson
  (6:14 PM)

Wow. Tom Brady.

Dave (Denver)

MW - What are the priorities for Denver in the draft? I know Defense - yet where would you start? My thoughts Safety or NT in the first round.

Matt Williamson
  (6:15 PM)

Both are monster needs and I wouldn't argue at all. Not sure there is a S worth that pick though.

Travis, Anchorage [via mobile]

What will the Vikings do about the QB position? What should they do?

Matt Williamson
  (6:15 PM)

Cassell makes sense here. As does Jeff Garcia. Can't go wtih a rookie.

Alex (Chicago, IL [via mobile]

What do you think will end up happening with the Bears qb situation?

Matt Williamson
  (6:16 PM)

I don't love it, but I guess you have to let Grossman go and put the majority of your eggs in Orton's basket. Still, I would use a 3rdish round pick on one for sure.

Matthew: huntsville al [via mobile]

Do you think the eagles will try to make a trade for anquan boldin or andre johnson?

Matt Williamson
  (6:17 PM)

Boldin? Yes. Andre Johnson? Pretty sure he isn't for sale.

Bobby (Seattle) [via mobile]

Which CB prospects are impressing in mobile? Or secondary in general?

Matt Williamson
  (6:19 PM)

Not a bad group of CBs. A Smith is good. Butler from UConn is as well. Derek Pegues from Mississippi State is someone who jumps out at me.

brian (syracuse, ny) [via mobile]

Where do you see the dolphins going with there first few draft picks?

Matt Williamson
  (6:20 PM)

Would love to get a true #1 WR. RT is a big need if Carey walks. I still don't like the secondary. That roster still needs a fair amount of work.

Anthony (NYC)

M-Dub we know warner is very effective against the blitz, but against the Steelers Harrison, Woodley, & the rest of the front seven isn't it going to be a bit much for Warner to handle? Plus he still has to deal with Polumaulu & LeBeau.

Matt Williamson
  (6:20 PM)

I hear ya and that will be the matchup that this game hinges on. He has been tremendous vs. the blitz and gets the ball out very quick.

David (austin) [via mobile]

Matt my man! Just how good is Crabtree? Will you please dispel the rumor that he is a product of that system.

Matt Williamson
  (6:21 PM)

I do not think that is the case. Top notch prospect. Still, not a burner. Not sure he will run away from a lot of CBs for bombs.

Jeff (Rochester NY)

Who do you think the Bills take in the first round?

Matt Williamson
  (6:21 PM)

I see a few big needs for Buff-#2 WR, TE, OC and DE. Any of the above would be great.

Fred (Chicago) [via mobile]

Will the bears go out and get a legit wr?

Matt Williamson
  (6:22 PM)

Could see them drafting one in round one, but overall, there is much of a need for WRs in the NFL than the supply can handle.

Joel , Bellingham MA [via mobile]

I was doing some thinking, and I think that the best place for Matt Cassell is the Vikings, mainly because of the games best RB in Peterson a stout defense; and i know there WR's are decent at best with Rice, Berrian and others. Your thoughts?

Matt Williamson
  (6:23 PM)

Mentioned that earlier and they might be willing to part with the most in trade to win now. Much like the J Allen DDay trade last year.

Bill(NY) [via mobile]

Hey Matt so what's Shonn Greens draft status looking like rigt now?

Matt Williamson
  (6:25 PM)

There are five very good junior RBs-Brown, McCoy, Moreno and Wells. Not sure how they will shake out, but Greene is in that coversation and should be extremely attractive to a team needing a power RB...like Philly.

Joel , Bellingham MA [via mobile]

What is the most overrated posistion in Football?

Matt Williamson
  (6:25 PM)

RB or MLB. The big boys in front of these two allow for RBs and MLBs to get more glory than they deserve.

Scott NJ [via mobile]

instead of the eagles trying to trade for boldin wouldn't it be easier for them to try and get Winslow

Matt Williamson
  (6:26 PM)

That isn't a bad call and yes, he would be cheaper. Just needs to pass a team physical though. However, K2 is really just a big WR at this point of his career anyways, but I also worry how much longer he can play. So many injuries.

DLiu (Chapel Hill, NC)

Is it just me, or is Jon Beason one of the most underrated LBs in the NFL?

Matt Williamson
  (6:27 PM)

Surely. Great player.

mark atlanta,ga [via mobile]

The Giants need to replace Pierce a.s.a.p. Do you think they'll pick a backer in the 1st round?

Matt Williamson
  (6:27 PM)

WR is the biggest need to me once Plex departs. LB in general is a need. Don't love any of their LBs.

Tyrell Jacksonville florida [via mobile]

What do you think of the rookie pass rushers Harvey and groves? If they come on next year how much of an impact do you think it will have on the defense?

Matt Williamson
  (6:28 PM)

They should improve, but those guys were also brought in to attack QB when Jax had a lead-that didn't work out so well. Plus, Stroud's loss was bigger than many realize. Those DTs demanded a lot of attention.

Princeton New Jersey [via mobile]

How do you think the new head coach, Ryan, will do with the jets? Will they make the playoffs at least?

Matt Williamson
  (6:29 PM)

Too early for 2009 playoff picks, but I do think it was an excellent hire. That D has talent, but the play calling was so pasive. No more.

Matt Williamson
  (6:29 PM)

Folks, I have to run. McShay is keeping me busy down here. Catch you next Wed at my normal time.
