Chat with Bill Williamson

Steiny (NYC)

What are your thoughts on Chiefs defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham leaving the team to become the defensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions?

Bill Williamson
  (2:02 PM)

Hey everyone let's get rolling. My first thoughts on Cunningham leaving Kansas City was that he must think Herm Edwards will be fired. They were close and I don't think Cunningham would leave if he thought otherwise.

philip, sd

what chance do the chargers have of winning it all next year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:03 PM)

This is still a good team. They need a running game, better blocking, a healthy Merriman and an improved secondary. If all of those things happen this team will be dangerous.

Evan Dammarell Wadsworth,Ohio

Is Larry Fitzgerald going to get past the Steeler defense?

Bill Williamson
  (2:04 PM)

A few times for sure. He's too good not to make an impact.

Matt (San Francisco)

Hey Bill, Love the blog. Thanks for keeping us up to date on all things AFC West... What do you think of Mel's mock today with Denver taking Raji at 12? I love the idea of pairing him with Peppers or Suggs. Throw in a little Elvis, and the Broncos pass rush might have some bite next year.

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

It's interesting. I think the d-line has to be revamped and that would be a good start.

Bill Williamson
  (2:06 PM)

Fitzgerald.

TONY IN SAN DIEGO

HEY BILL, WHICH RUNNING BACK IS A BETTER FIT FOR THE CHARGERS AT 16, BEANIE WELLS OR KNOSHAWN MORENO? OR DO WE TAKE A ANOTHER POSITION AT THAT SLOT?

Bill Williamson
  (2:07 PM)

I hear scouts like Moreno better. As far the pick, if he is there and LT is gone, he has to be seriously considered.

Alex (Kansas City)

Do you think Haley will be the next HC at Kansas City? BTW, Raji to Chiefs at #3.

Bill Williamson
  (2:09 PM)

I think Haley could bw considered. There are a lot reasons why it makes sense. As far as Raji goes, the Chiefs need a DE more than a DT at this point.

Patrick (NYC)

Hey Bill! Wanted to get your thoughts on Jack Harry report that the Chiefs will announce a coach by Friday and that it will be Mike Shanahan?

Bill Williamson
  (2:11 PM)

It's unsubstantiated at that this point. Not saying the report is wrong. But it is unsubstantiated at this point.

Rob ( NYC)

Martingale to the broncos has to have Al Davis stewing.....

Bill Williamson
  (2:11 PM)

I would think so yes. That is a big deal.

Paul (KC)

I have to take issue with your labeling Jamaal Charles a "situational back" last week. Westrook, Portis, and DeAngelo Williams are just a few other backs who were pigeon-holed as such. Seems silly that people still use that term.

Bill Williamson
  (2:13 PM)

Thanks for the point. But until he proves he can be a bell-cow back, I think he has to be considered a situational player. Thanks again for your thoughts.

Billy(SD)

I hope Tomlinson stays. I don't care what people are saying, he still has something left. Norv was pass-first all the way. Any true SD fan that doesn't feel the same way is a disgrace.

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

I think you all feel that way. LT is a once in a lifetime player for a franchise.

Alex (Kansas City)

Re: Raji #3-- Is there a DE you can justify taking with the #3 pick, though? Even if you move down a few picks any DEs? Raji and Dorsey in the middle would be awesome! Chiefs are 2 years away from competing for playoffs anyway-- What say you?

Bill Williamson
  (2:15 PM)

The Chiefs need to take the best player on the board. Raji has some moving up to do before he is worthy of the No. 3 pick. If he proves it, then, sure take him.

Tom (Denver)

Are the Broncos switching to a 3-4 D?

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

Yes, that's the plan.

Ryan (San Diego)

Billy, I am a true SD fan and I dont feel the same way nor am I a disgrace. LT is not worth the 9 million this year when other younger players need extensions. He needs to take a pay cut and stay or decide the money is more important and move on. The organization is bigger than 1 player

Bill Williamson
  (2:19 PM)

I had a feeling it wouldn't take long to find an opposing view. Good stuff. Here's my take: He takes a pay cut and everyone moves forward for another year. If he continues to slide and/or continues to get hurt (both are real possibilities for a 30-year-old) then he will likley be gone in 2010. But LT needs to be a Charger in 2009.

Cosmo (Anytown, USA)

Before last week's games, who was playing better defense - Philly or Pitt?

Bill Williamson
  (2:20 PM)

I'd say the Steelers.

Luke (St. Louis)

Who is the next coach of the Oakland Raiders?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

I'd say Tom Cable but why is it taking so long?

Steve (Moscow, ID)

Any idea how much cap space each team in the AFC West has?

Bill Williamson
  (2:22 PM)

Hi Steve, I am going to address a little later as it becomes more relevant and when teams start making moves to create more space.

Jack (Boston)

Are the Broncos in a rebuilding year or can they get the personnel that fits McDaniels Offense/Defense?

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

We see fast turnarounds all the time and let's face it, there are some nice building blocks here. I can see Denver getting better in a hurry. But getting better defensive players is the key.

Matt (KC)

We already know what you think about Charles. What do you think of their other talent on O -- Thigpen, Bowe, and Bradley? They have to think long and hard about Sanchez.

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

I like that offense. My take on Thigpen is to keep him another year. He is servicable. Fill other, more pressing needs (defense, defense, defense) now.

Focus

Are you on the phone. This chat just slowed down to a crawl.

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

The phone never stops ringing. But the chat moves on.

PT (Franklin, NC)

Can either Johnnie Lee Higgins or Chaz Schilens be a number 1 WR for Oakland or are they both number 2's at best?

Bill Williamson
  (2:29 PM)

Until they develop and they both deserve time to develop, Oakland can't count on them being the top guy.

PT (Franklin, NC)

Is offensive line or defensive line a bigger need for the Raiders?

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

I'd say Oakland's two greatest needs are LT and WR.

Matt (Philadelphia)

How can we expect this division to improve much in 2009 with all the teams facing Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and the NFC East?

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

Great point. Wins will be difficult to come by again in 2009.

PT (Franklin, NC)

So you don't believe that Mario Henderson is the answer at LT in Oakland?

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

That is correct, sir. The Raiders need an upgrade there.

Shane (Phx, AZ)

Bill Williamson: (2:21 PM ET ) I'd say Tom Cable but why is it taking so long? You dont think there is any truth Al Davis may want to try to nab Todd Haley? He may be just waiting for the SB to end; typical Al Davis though...string his coach along while all the head coaching vacancies are filled.

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

I have heard for several weeks (way before he became the flavor fo the month) that Haley was on Al's radar. But if Haley has a chance to go to Kansas CIty or Oakland, where do you think he'd go? Remember, his boss, Ken Whisenhunt, waited a year for a better job rather than moving forward with the Raiders three years ago. It could be a similar situaiton if Kansas CIty doesn't pan out for Haley.

Ryan (San Diego)

Are you blogging year around or just til after the Pro Bowl?

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

Year round, baby.

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

Year round, baby.

Luke (St. Louis)

Why did Matingale bolt to Denver if he was so loyal to Al Davis?

Bill Williamson
  (2:36 PM)

Excellent point.

Shawn (Toronto)

I hear you on giving Thigpen another year and that the Chiefs need defense, defense, defense but I don't see any defenders in the draft worth of the #3 pick, do you?

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

Yes, it is kind of weak. Maybe the Chiefs could trade down a few spots and get another first rounder. This team needs volume.

Ray (El Paso TX)

Hey Bill, Do you see Denver drafting a RB within the first three rounds?

Bill Williamson
  (2:38 PM)

With running game gurus Bobby Turner and Rick Dennison sticking around, I don't think so. I think the same approach will be taken.

Jerry (Booneville, CA)

What do you think of San Diego's ILB's? Cooper is solid, but not a differnce maker. Dobbins and Wilhelm are fringe players. Why not give Siler or Waters a chance or draft Maualuga.

Bill Williamson
  (2:40 PM)

Cooper makes plays. I think they like Dobbins but if Maualuga is there, the Chargers will do back flips. I think Denver may eye him as well at No. 12.

Mike (KC)

Denver should draft Maurice Clarett again.

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

I think he still may be tied up for a while.

Bill (Boulder)

Yeah it is gotten to be "Which would rather do: Have a root canal or be the HC of the Raiders?" and most are getting the Root Canal.

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

At least that pain is gone in a couple of days.

Alex (Brooklyn Center, MN)

Maybe Crabtree to the Chiefs? It would be interesting to see how Thigpen would be if Crabtree is good and Gonzalez stays.

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

And don't forget Bowe. Yikes. That would be scary.

Jonathan, (Aurora,CO)

Hey Bill, seeing as you live here in Denver you have had to have heard of Gartrell Johnson from CSU. Do you see the Broncos maybe drafting him on the second day? Seems like he would fit well here.

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

I've talked to some folks about him. He is a down-hill runner that Denver craves. But I think the Broncos are looking at all defense in the early rounds.

Stu (KC)

How about Andre Smith to the Chiefs. He and Albert would be awesome.

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

But will he be there at No. 3?

Jeff (San Diego, CA)

What position/player do the Chargers look at in the first round? Thanks.

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

LB, RT, RB.

Eric (Sioux City)

If Millen were still in Detroit KC could trade their 1st for Detroit's two 1sts.

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

The Millen bashing continues. Poor guy.

Jesse (Annapolis, MD)

Do you think San Diego lands long term contracts with Rivers or with Merriman? Or both?

Bill Williamson
  (2:48 PM)

I think Rivers is re-signed soon. I think the team wants to see how healthy Merriman is before committing long term and that makes sense.

Bill Williamson
  (2:48 PM)

I think Rivers is re-signed soon. I think the team wants to see how healthy Merriman is before committing long term and that makes sense.

Steiny (NYC)

Do you think Larry Johnson will be back with the Chiefs next season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:49 PM)

No, I think he is long done.

David (San Diego, CA)

With the success that A.J. Smith has had in finding good running backs in low rounds (Michael Turner was a 5th-rounder, Darren Sproles a 4th), it seems to me that the OL and LB are bigger priorities for round 1.

Bill Williamson
  (2:50 PM)

I agree as well. The other needs are greater ... unless LT is gone and there is no suitable replacement.

Nate (Detroit)

Please, no sympathy for that idiot Millen. He ran the Lions into the ground, yet still gets a job with CBS. No shame, classless.

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

Love the passion, Nate.

Aaron (K.C.MO.)

Who is the next team to be sucked into the hole that is Pac-man?

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

My prediction: No one.

Luke (St. Louis)

The reviews seem mixed on Russell. Do you agree a good supporting cast and the right offense-not west coast- will make him into a very good qb?

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

I agree that he needs a better supporting cast. He needs help. But I think he also needs to get a lot better himself.

Jesse (Annapolis, MD)

I think the Chargers could be very effective using Sproles and LT as the Jags have been doing with Jones-Drew and Taylor. How come the Chargers didn't use this approach or spell LT very effectively this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

I'm with you on that, Jesse. I thought they could have mixed it up better at times.

Max (Portland, OR)

any news on nnamdi or shane?

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

Not yet. That will start popping at the end of next month.

Kyle (Brockport. NY)

With Raji dominating at the Senior Bowl, and GB switching to the 3-4 defense too, will he still be there for Denver at 12?

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

He does seem to be popular right now. Green Bay has to be eying him.

Steiny (NYC)

Will Al Saunders become the next offensive coordinator of the Oakland Raiders?

Bill Williamson
  (2:57 PM)

Al Davis has long been a fan. It makes sense. But let's see who the head coach is first.

Shawn (Toronto)

What kind of draft pick do you think the Chiefs could get for Larry Johnson?

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

With his age and baggage? Not a whole lot. Maybe a conditional mid rounder.

Dave (Oakland)

Doesn't Al always build the staff first and then hire the head coach?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

Yeah, every year or two. It's works out pretty well, doesn't it?

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

Hey folks, great hour. Thanks for the fun. Talk to you nex week.
