Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Bill Conley

Bill Conley
  (2:59 PM)

The next seven days are filled with anxiety for athletes, coaches and fans as the recruiting wars come to a close. Some players will not end up being as successful as anticipated while others will develop into collegiate standouts. The one thing for sure is the fact that nobody knows how good a recruiting class really is till about two years down the road. At the same time, no one will argue that the last week of recruiting, above all, is exciting. Glad to answer as many questions as possible in this short amount of time.

Brad (Gadsden,Alabama)

Billy, Is Rubean Randle comeing to Bama?

Bill Conley
  (3:05 PM)

There is no doubt the Tide would love to get Randle. What a dual threat he would be with Julio Jones. The Tide also has two other very good verbals in Norwood and Bowman. It may very well come down to Bama and LSU. LSU doesn't have near the depth at that position and Randle is the one guy they really need to get.

Are the Gators in good shape to pick up Charles and Jelani Jenkins? Who else do you think will round out this class?

Bill Conley
  (3:07 PM)

I would say things look pretty good for the Gators for Jenkins. Charles, on the other hand is a real mystery man. He's taking late visits and might not sign till after signing day. The Gators traditionally finish very strong and have an excellent shot at Josh Evans even though he is from New Jersey. Jones is suppose to visit LSU this weekend; they maybe the team to beat. The Gators still have an outside shot at Frankie Telfort from Miami. Look for Urban Meyer and staff to close hard.

Cole (Portland)

Bryce Brown is interested in Oregon still..what are your thoughts on us landing him?

Bill Conley
  (3:09 PM)

Oregon is in the hunt but Miami is still the team to beat. His brother Arthur is a LB for the Hurricanes and blood is thicker than recruiting juices.

Steiny (NYC)

Can Rueben Randle be as good as Julio Jones his freshman year?

Bill Conley
  (3:11 PM)

Randle is indeed a special player and arguably the best wide receiver in the class along with Andre Debose. Randle is a tall and fluid receiver that is a real deep threat and isn't afraid to come across the middle. He has super hands and makes valuable yards after the catch. He should play a ton early and be a premier college receiver before it's over. He can possibly be a difference maker early if he is in the right fit with a good supporting cast.

Ken (NYC)

What's your take on the Gamecocks recruiting efforts so far? It seems like they've quietly put together a pretty strong class.

Bill Conley
  (3:13 PM)

. There's no doubt the Gamecocks are having a very good year and trying to break into the top ten of recruiting classes. They already have 5 of ESPN's top 150 players. The class is extremely strong in the secondary with players like Stephon Gilmore, Devonte Holloman, Chris Payne, and Damario Jeffery along with running back Jarvis Giles.

How do you think running back jordan hall will fit in at ohio state with his former highschool teammate Terelle Pryor running the show?

Bill Conley
  (3:14 PM)

Jordan Hall is a very solid running back that has good vision and accelerates through the hole. He also has exceptional hands and can catch the ball out of the backfield. Hall as well as Jaamal Berry should have a chance to fit into the offensive plans for the Buckeyes with Beanie Wells going pro.

David (LA, CA)

Bill, how ridiculously awesome is Stanford's class considering the team finished below .500 the last couple years? Will Harbaugh be able to keep this up over the next couple years, and tell me which players from the class will be All-Pac 10 before they graduate? Thanks.

Bill Conley
  (3:17 PM)

Stanford is shaping up to have a very good class with 2 top 150 players. It's a little heavy on the offense; I'd like to see them land a couple more real good defensive players down the stretch like Shayne Skov. I think wide receiver Jamal Patterson and quarterback Josh Nunes have a huge upside and Nunes could develop into a very good collegiate quarterback.

Do you see the undesized LB Dorien Bell from Pa being moved to safety?

Bill Conley
  (3:19 PM)

Maybe a strong safety but he really is aggressive with great instincts. He is also a little heavy for a safety but he can run.

Craig (Bowling Green, OH)

Now that Ohio St has lost out on Tahj Boyd they have offered Austin Boucher. What skills would he bring to the table and what are the Buckeyes chances of convincing him to switch from the Redhawks?

Bill Conley
  (3:20 PM)

Boucher is a competitive left handed quarterback who is a little short but throws a good football. He has good feet but is not really a dual threat quarterback like Pryor. He, obviously, would play much sooner at Miami of Ohio. Whether he comes to Ohio State or not, the Buckeyes will have to go after at least one great QB next year.

Joe (Baltimore, Md)

Bill, Looks like a two team battle for Jelani Jenkins. Does he go with the Gators or Nittany Lions? Thanks!

Bill Conley
  (3:22 PM)

It is a battle but I'd have to say the Gators have an edge at this point.

Ron (Tacoma,Wa)

Did tahj Boyd make a decision on where he's going to go yet?

Bill Conley
  (3:23 PM)

. Yes, he chose Clemson over Ohio State and Oregon. Clemson is coming on strong after losing some verbals earlier

Max Ocala, Fl

Alabama commitment Trent Richardson is visiting FSU this weekend. Do you see him possibly changing his commitment?

Bill Conley
  (3:25 PM)

. Anytime you have the last visit, there's a chance. The problem is the Seminoles already have 2 RB commitments while the Tide is recruiting only Richardson. Also, Saban is tough to beat down the stretch.

Mike (Philly, Pa)

Hey Bill, Justin Brown looks like he's down to two. Does Penn State add to Rutgers recent recruiting pain and nab the talented wide out?

Bill Conley
  (3:27 PM)

I think this one will go down to the wire. Brown really likes the Rutgers staff and they have been on him a long time but Penn State normally wins this head to head battle.

Greg (Fort Worth, Tx)

Do you see TCU in the future getting 5 star recruits because of their up and coming program and the new facilities?

Bill Conley
  (3:29 PM)

TCU has no five star recruits but they have one of the very best classes for a non-BCS school and I really like wide receiver Josh Boyce. He not only can catch the ball, he has great speed and could be an outstanding return specialist. Helmets off to the Horned Frogs.

Phil Tampa FL

A Hurricane is brewing! What impact will Mark Whipple make on the last week of the recruiting trail? Go Canes!

Bill Conley
  (3:31 PM)

He is doing a very good job and impressing recruits; the entire Miami staff is getting after it.

Bradford (Boise, ID)

Bill, what are your thoughts on Boise State's recruiting class? Any chance we'll get a couple more on LOI day? Thanks.

Bill Conley
  (3:33 PM)

Like TCU, doing well. Joe Southwick is a very talented quarterback and Charles Leno a very solid offensive lineman.

Oscar (dallas texas)

Will USC have the top recruiting class this year?

Bill Conley
  (3:35 PM)

Dogfight at the top between LSU, USC and Texas. Depends on who closes the strongest.

Where will Marlon Brown end up?

Bill Conley
  (3:36 PM)

One of the big names left. I would say it will end up between Ohio State, Tenn, and Florida.

Bill Conley
  (3:37 PM)

Thanks for all the great questions and next Wednesday tells the tale.
