Chat with Bill Williamson

Will (SD, CA)

The chargers have a lot of offseason acquisitions to make. Do you see any big name free agents that might be interested in coming here? and if so, who?

Bill Williamson
  (3:05 PM)

Bart Scott from the Ravens could be a possibility.

Andy (Denver)

Why not the Steelers next season baby!!!!! The Patriots will get smoked 51-13 in the AFC Title game in Pittsburgh when they meet!!!!!!

Bill Williamson
  (3:05 PM)

Next year, already? Enjoy the moment.

Maue New York

Karlos Dansby, good fit for broncos 3-4 or no? him and Williams at ILB, Jarvis Moss and Elvis at OLB. Sounds decent, no?

Bill Williamson
  (3:06 PM)

It's OK. I'd be nervous to try to use both Elvis and Moss at linebacker without knowing what each could do. I think Wesley Woodyard needs to be in the mix more than Moss at this point.

Clint G. (Midland, TX)

What is your take on Ted Tollner for OC/QB coach and John Marshall for DC, if of course this comes to pass as rumored?

Bill Williamson
  (3:08 PM)

Oakland is looking at both Tollner and Marshall and there is a good chance both will end up with the Raiders. Both are longtime NFL assistants.

Maue New York

instead of the raiders drafting a WR high wouldnt it make sense to sign a bunch of guys like Reggie Williams, Michael Clayton, etc and than drafting a WR with speed in the second round?

Bill Williamson
  (3:09 PM)

I think Oakland needs to take a potential star and not try to get by with journeyman every year.

Ryan (Denver)

What was your honest opinion of the Super bowl? Where does it rank in your mind?

Bill Williamson
  (3:11 PM)

Off the top of my head, it was probably a top five game, but until the fourth quarter there was some dead spots. But I'll say this, there were some all-time memorable plays in the game.

PT (Franklin, NC)

I know the rumors that Tom Cable sat in on the interviews for the assistants but does that actually mean he had any say over who was hired?

Bill Williamson
  (3:12 PM)

Does anyone in Oakland really have any say other than Al Davis?

Ryan (Denver)

Will Denver make any sort of run at Julius Peppers or Albert Haynesworth?

Bill Williamson
  (3:13 PM)

Maybe one of them. They could could work well in the 3-4 defense but because the Broncos need so many new defenders I think they may try to get a lot of mid level players and not one big-item ticket.

Tony (Sterling, VA)

Who do you think will be the darkhorse team next season? Like the Cardinals of this year

Bill Williamson
  (3:14 PM)

Just for kicks and don't hold it to me because it is just popping into my head now: Houston

PT (Franklin, NC)

If Crabtree did in fact fall to the Raiders, would he immediately come in as their #1 WR?

Bill Williamson
  (3:15 PM)

No doubt about it.

Ryan (Denver)

Which AFC West team needs the most help in the draft?

Bill Williamson
  (3:17 PM)

I'd say Kansas City. It is the furtherest away from being a contender than any team in the division.

Will (SD, CA)

From what you hear from the league, the chargers organization, and the press, do you think the Chargers are likely to leave San Diego for another city even tho our economic situation?

Bill Williamson
  (3:18 PM)

I think Los Angeles is a legitimate option, yes.

Frank (Omaha)

How long will it take for the Chiefs to become a contender again?

Bill Williamson
  (3:18 PM)

A couple of more drafts.

Jeff (Cincinnati)

What are the chances that TJ Housmansada plays for the Bengals next year?

Bill Williamson
  (3:19 PM)

I wouldn't say the chances are strong.

Ryan (Denver)

Who will have a better statistical season next year under Josh McDaniels, Eddie Royal or Brandon Stokely? Look what Welker did out of the slot last season.

Bill Williamson
  (3:20 PM)

Nice question: I'd say Royal. Yes, Stokley will get his chances but Royal will thrive under McDaniels.

Ben Long Island

would al davis's ego allow him to accept the commish's suggestion and explore sharing a new stadium with the 49ers?

Bill Williamson
  (3:21 PM)

All that new revenue might.

Dave (Pittsburgh)

Are the Steelers America's team?

Bill Williamson
  (3:21 PM)

I think so. Steelers' fans are everywhere.

Joe (DSM)

Bill - Any chance Denver goes after Bart Scott with his connection to Nolan? What about a player like Igor Olshansky?

Bill Williamson
  (3:23 PM)

Olshansky could be an interesting fit there. I hear he will not return to San Diego.

Alex (Kansas City)

How long before KC hires a new Coach? Any rumors on who they've interviewed?

Bill Williamson
  (3:24 PM)

Everything has been centered around Todd Haley. Until we hear otherwise, I think you have to think Haley may be the guy.

Will (SD, CA)

Is Chris "Beanie" Wells a better option for the Chargers than Knowshon Moreno since he compliments someone like LT or Sproles with his physical presence? Kind of like a Michael Turner?

Bill Williamson
  (3:26 PM)

Right now, i kind of like Moreno.

Ryan (New Jersey)

Who is most likely going to be Denver's NT in the new 3-4?

Bill Williamson
  (3:26 PM)

Just a guess: Grady Jackson.

ryan, SF

do you think the niners draft a QB in the 1st round if sanchez/stafford fall to them?

Bill Williamson
  (3:27 PM)

There's no way Stafford falls to No. 10 but Sanchez is a possibility. I think the 49ers have to think about it.

Bill (Miami)

Will Miami win the AFC East Division again?

Bill Williamson
  (3:28 PM)

If Tom Brady is healthy ...

Brandon Springboro, OH

I noticed the poll on EPSN.com asking if Big Ben was in the 'top 4' of current QB's and the response was overwhelmingly - NO, what are your thoughts? He's not a Fantasy QB, but he is a winner...

Bill Williamson
  (3:30 PM)

Ultimately, I have a hard time arguing with Super Bowl rings. They were saying the same thing about Brady a few years ago, weren't they?

Ben Long Island

100 bucks says denver will go nowhere near grady, who doesnt eat space at his size and still tries to just penetrate wildly.

Bill Williamson
  (3:30 PM)

Pass on the bet, bro, but they are studying him.

Ryan (Denver)

Any chance Shannon Sharpe makes the Hall of Fame next year with Tim Brown, Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith eligible?

Bill Williamson
  (3:31 PM)

Well, I thought he was a shoo-in this year. Now, I have no idea. Cris Carter is still in the mix as well.

Ben Long Island

Burger cant play NFL style football, hes a backyard scrambler... he could never call a diciplined game and get the ball out to timing routes like Eli can. They are both winners, but they both do things well that the other is weak at. and burgers 1st superbowl dont count, even bettis said the plan was to not let ben lose that game, and he still almost did.

Bill Williamson
  (3:33 PM)

Two Super Bowl rings in five years ins't bad for a guy who can't play.

Ryan (America's Finest City)

Word out of San Diego is Jamal Williams was arrested for a DUI. Suspensions coming for him and Vincent Jackson to start off the season?

Bill Williamson
  (3:35 PM)

Yes,. the San Diego Union Tribune is reporting WIlliams was arrested. If convicted he could face some punishment as would Jackson.

Doug Colorado Springs

What do you think the chances of Warner returing as the Cardinals Qb next year?

Bill Williamson
  (3:36 PM)

I think pretty good. This guy has been through so much. It would likely be difficult for him to leave when he is still playing at a high level.

Jeff (Rochester NY)

Since you used to cover the Vikings, I will ask you this question... if Percy Harvin was still available at #22, would they snap him up?

Bill Williamson
  (3:38 PM)

The team's biggest needs is on offense so it would be tempting to get a potential game changer in Harvin.

Rich Miami, FL

Where is Shawn Merriman in his rehab?...If I was a chargers fan to me that is the most important thing, I think you can draft a RB later in the draft and develop him

Bill Williamson
  (3:39 PM)

When I last talked to Merriman (Jan. 11) he said he is way ahead in his rehab. He said he is in the best shape of his life and he is completely confident that he will return by the start of training camp.

Irving (New York, NY)

If Detroit and KC pass on a QB do you think the JETS will get stanford or sanchez? If you look at the draft board there isnt really a team besides those two that need a QB. Or should the trade up to grab one of them?

Bill Williamson
  (3:40 PM)

The way quaretrbacks can tumble down a board on draft day, yes, sure it could happen.

Junior (San Antonio)

I for one am so happy the Cardinals didn't win the Super Bowl because this pitiful team went 9-7 and got dominated in several games this season. They are not a Super Bowl type of team like the Steelers which are TRUE Super Bowl Champions and contenders.

Bill Williamson
  (3:42 PM)

The Cardinals certainly wouldn't be considered one of the best teams ever had they won. But it would have shown that all that counts is getting to the playoffs.

Bill Williamson
  (3:42 PM)

The Cardinals certainly wouldn't be considered one of the best teams ever had they won. But it would have shown that all that counts is getting to the playoffs.

Maue New York

ben didnt say hes a bad player, just that he cant play structured football. and isnt that true?

Bill Williamson
  (3:43 PM)

I'm not trying to pounce on anyone, but no, it's not true. The guy has won two Super Boews in five years. He's going soemthing right in NFL styles and in structured football. The guy gets it done.

Corey (Philadelphia, PA)

Which rookie OL would you choose to anchor your offensive line for the years to come: Miami's Jake Long, or Denver's Ryan Clady?

Bill Williamson
  (3:44 PM)

Clady was amazing. He is a special player.

Bob ( Washinton DC)

Do you think Tyler Thigpen will be a starting QB in the league

Bill Williamson
  (3:45 PM)

I think his best chance is in Kansas City. If not, he may have trouble finding a job right away but I think he can be an effective player.

Mike Austin, TX

Will Pittsburgh try to address its OL problems via free agency or in the draft?

Bill Williamson
  (3:47 PM)

The Steeelrs love building through the draft and they do a great job of it. Expect them to target an offensive lineman in the first round.

Ryan (Denver)

Peyton Hillis sure looked like a gamer last year, do you think he will be Denver's starting RB next year?

Bill Williamson
  (3:48 PM)

I really like Hillis too. He is a tough player and he can play many positions. I think there will be a place for him. Remember, after he was hurt, Denver didn't win another game.

Mitch (Denver)

I hear Rey might not be all that effective on 3rd downs. If this is true, can the Broncos with all of their glaring holes on D afford him? Or is there a better pick?

Bill Williamson
  (3:49 PM)

He is not a totally polsihed player and he plays almost too fast at times. But he is a very good prospect for Denver.

Greg (Sixburgh, PA)

Ben has won two Super Bowls in four years.

Bill Williamson
  (3:51 PM)

Two in a five-season career is what I was saying. Thanks, BW.

Rich Miami, FL

Any chance that a team for econmical reason, passes on a pick (like the vikings did not for econmical reason) and wait a few picks to take there player?

Bill Williamson
  (3:53 PM)

That would be crazy. There is always someone looking to trade up. The draft slots are too valuable to just give away.

QUESTIONTO BILL WILLIAMSON AT 4,O5 PM HI BILL HOW YOU SEE STEELERS NEXT YEAR

Bill Williamson
  (3:55 PM)

I see them being the legitimate Super Bowl contender they are. Not many holes there.

Maue New York

When your an owner and your facing a 60 mil check economic reasons start to make a lot of sense come draft time..... how can you not think that?

Bill Williamson
  (3:56 PM)

Because draft picks are so valubale. Why pass on a pick when you can get an extra third-round pick by trading it?

Scott (Pittsburgh, PA)

I'm a big fan of Cutler in Denver..Any sense that this year will be his breakout year ? To finally step up ?

Bill Williamson
  (3:57 PM)

I think 2008 was his breakout season. That's why he in Hawaii today.

Ryan (Denver)

Why do teams like Detroit have, i think it's 15 hall of famers and Denver is stuck at 2? I don't understand it.

Bill Williamson
  (3:58 PM)

Many people in the Denver facility wonder the same thing, Ryan

Dave (Denver)

It sure looks like in Hillis and Spencer and Woodyard the Broncos found some football players and not the usual workout warriors that seem to get drafted. When will the scouts and drafting people realize that what is proven during games is more important than combine workouts?

Bill Williamson
  (4:00 PM)

I've long thought that. Workout warriors break your hwart. The latest may be Vernon Gholston who after having a great combine was terrible as a rookie for the Jets who picked him with the No. 6 choice.

Bill Williamson
  (4:01 PM)

Great hour, folks. Thanks, talk to you next week. BW
