Back from Las Vegas, and good to be back with MMA Nation in our regular Thursday slot. Hope everyone enjoyed the MMA Live coverage at UFC 94. As usual, a bunch of topics to get to in the world of Mixed martial arts...Let's do this...
If BJ Penn really does call is quits, who do you think will fight for the vacant LW title? K flo v Sherk? That rematch would be off the tonic!!
Were Penn to retire or vacate his title, I think Sean Sherk or Diego Sanchez would fight Florian for the title. Of course, both guys have fights lined up, and Diego hasn't even fought yet at 155. I think Penn-Florian is gonna happen, though.
Don't you think ufc is having too many split decisions recently? why is this happening? In UFC 94, 5 out of 10 came out split decision I think it's very bad for the sports and the fans.UFC needs to find out better scoring sytem. Some fighters (esp.dong hyun kim)got robbed by current scoring system.
You are not alone in your thinking, John. Frank Mir seems to think the increased # of split decisions are a by-product of the sport's evolution. Most fighters bring very complete games to the table these days, so there have been less finishes of late. I think it sorts of depends on the card. UFC 91 was all about KOs and submissions.
Do you think we will see another Josh koshcheck vs Diego Sanchez 2 ?
Doubtful, Danny. They are in different weight classes now.
Jon, Congrats on the UFC 94 broadcasts. You guys did an outstanding job. What are the chances of you guys being live at other events this year? Would you ever take the show somewhere other than Vegas?
Thanks, Wade. We appreciate it. I think there is a good chance we will do more remotes at future UFC events. As for taking the show outside of Las Vegas, why not? I already suggested we rent a van for UFC 97 in Montreal!
When might cain velasquez or shane carwin get a shot at lesnar? i know they are relatively new but they are the evolution the hvy weights need as far as giving brock a challenge due to size and strength
I think Shane Carwin would be right on the cusp of a title shot with a win over Gabriel Gonzaga. Velasquez is also intriguing.
With your guys' sources, have you heard any news on when the GSP/Alves fight may go down? It seems like the UFC 97 in Montreal event would be awfully tough to pass up if you're GSP.
No inside dirt yet, Anthony. That would be a fairly quick turnaround for GSP, but he wasn't damaged much against Penn, so perhaps he would be inclined to return in April.
how about GSP's interview after the Penn fight. That was crazy how he knew keeping Penn on the mat would make blood rush to his shoulders causing him to slow down.
A tremendously technical, scientific approach to the fight by GSP. We were very impressed, especially with his post-fight explanation that you are referencing.
Wow...who would have thought that Machida would have given us the most exciting fight on the card. I looked at the undercard results and they ALL went to decision as well. The only other fight that didn't go the distance was BJ getting demolished by GSP.
Correct. A huge statement made by Lyoto.
What's up Jon? How do you see the fights between neer vs danzig and stephens vs lauzon? Des Moines needs a UFC event!
I lean towards Danzig and Lauzon. I'd give Stephens more of a shot, if he wasn't a late replacement. Lauzon has a pretty well-rounded skill set.
After all the trash talk of GSP being a quitter by Penn, did you find the ending to his fight saturday fitting?
I did, Craig. You knew BJ wouldn't tap or get submitted, but for all intents and purposes, he was doing fighting after the third round. Complete domination by St. Pierre.
What? No $50 PPV this weekend?
I know, how about that? Some free MMA this weekend. About time...
Jon, it was great seeing ESPN over the weekend in Vegas. The more events they give coverage to, the more the sport will be legitimately recognized. Having said that, is Machida the only 205er right now that has the potential to have a lasting reign as champion in the division?
I think the current champion, Rashad Evans, may have some staying power. But given all the talent, I expect that belt to change hands quite a bit over the next year or two.
Jon- whats the hapse bro? So BJ/Kenny, we all wanted this to happen anyway...
...all I can tell you is that its moving in the right direction.
Were you disappointed with how Diaz performed against Guida? Guida is good fighter, but I expected more from Diaz.
If you ask Nate, he says he won the fight. But I agree with you, Guilherme. He needed to force the pace and let his hands go, especially given the reach advantage. I thought he was passive, and should've lost by unanimous decision.
Hey Jon! "Vaseline-Gate" is really much ado about nothing, right? It seems overblown to me.
I would agree that is is overblown, but not necessarily that it's a non-story. I don't think it was a case of intentional rule-bending, but Phil Nurse should know better. It obviously had little-to-no impact on the outcome, and I hope MMA Nation doesn't feel that GSP's win is tainted.
wHAT ARE THE CHANCES N SEEING A GSP AND PENN REMATCH??
Not gonna happen, Mike. The series is 2-0 St. Pierre, and I'm not sure too many people are pining to see a third fight between the two.
do u think nate diaz should have won the fight with clay? I think he got robbed!!
Respectfully disagree. I didn't like that Guida stalled and held as much as he did, but the strategy worked. I gave Diaz only one round.
Most in the media believe Damian Meia is a contender at 185. I think he could make weight at 170. After seeing GSP use his size against Penn, Anderson Silva will do the same against Meia.
Good point, Dave. But I still like Maia a ton at 185. Not sure he could cut to 170. I'll ask around.
How fitting would it be to have Guida sponsored by Geico?
Haha. How do I suggest that to Clay without insulting him though?
Who in the heavyweight division can take out Fedor? If Machida gets his title shot against Evans what do you see as the outcome?
No current HW will be favored to beat Fedor, but I would like to see Josh Barnett, Brock Lesnar, and Frank Mir against Emelianenko. As for a possible Evans-Machida fight, I lean towards Rashad. Sick combination of power and speed likely would be too much for 'The Dragon'.
What up Jon! With the WEC now getting rid of the 170 division, what are your thoughts on the UFC just merging all of the divisions from the WEC into the UFC?
Seems like an eventuality, Marcus. We all recognize the WEC puts on some of the best cards in the business, but Zuffa appears to be moving in the direction of a complete merger. We'll see.
I was wondering if it was true that the winner of the Henderson bisbing fight will be the one to fight Anderson silva? And if so do ither of them stand a chance? Thanks
Yes. The winner of that fight is supposed to get the next MW title shot against Silva. Dan Henderson, in my opinion, has a better chance to beat Silva. They fought once before, early 2008, and Hendo won the first round, before eventually being submitted. It's a rematch I want to see. But Bisping could get in the way of that.
I know you want to see Hendo get another shot at the Spider, but he didn't even get out of the 2nd round last time.
Duly noted, Marc. Ultimately, I'd rather see Demain Maia against Anderson Silva. But that may be some time off.
Why don't mma fighter use defense like boxers
Plenty of them do, Miguel. It may not be as big a part of the sport as it is in boxing, but there are a lot of successful MMA fighters whose style is predicated upon movement and counter-punching.
Jon, first time caller, long time listener. Hey man, do you think Frankie Shamrock has any good fights left in him?
B Camps, welcome. I am an unabashed Frank Shamrock fan, and think he has plenty left. He's still recovering from the elbow injury suffered against Cung Le, but Frank will be heard of in the next 2-3 months. Stamp it.
Can you beat Brock Lesnar
Love the show...do you see GSP/ Anderson silva happening??And if it does..would it be this december or probably early 2010??
As long as both guys keep winning, yes. Silva-GSP is the next UFC mega-fight, without question. Silently, the UFC brass is praying neither guy gets beat before they make that fight.
I do think the vaseline ordeal is more than a blip, given who GSP was fighting. It's not like he was fighting a striker -- Penn's corner even said they planned to work off his back. If there was ANY advantage from what GSPs corner did, I'd say it's tainted. That being said, if they fought again and GSP was bone-dry, I still think he'd win. He doesn't need that stuff to win.
Good submission, Matt. Wanted to get that take out there.
How good is Jon Jones going to be in a couple years? Once he refines his striking with his hands he's going to be scary good.
It's amazing what he's done in such a short time. The dude drops out of college to pursue MMA full-time, and already has two quality wins in the UFC. His style is unorthodox and difficult to prepare for. I'm literally champing at the bit to see who his next opponent will be.
Jon, Are you guys going to take it on the road for UFC 98 in Vegas for Lesnar/Mir and Hughes/Serra? I'm waiting for them to announce this officially so i can know when i can bleed my bank account for tix.
I hope so Chris. E-mail firstname.lastname@example.org and tell them you want us on the road for 98!
Zuffa is so smart. This is the slowest sports period of the year in my opinion and we are going to be loaded with free events all of a sudden. 4 UFC and 2 WEC with two PPV in the next 8 events.
When might Anderson Silva be back in action? Even though I don't think he has much Competition.
He will defend his title against Thales Leites at UFC 97 in April.
Dana said he is interested in bringing on several top fighters from Japan, no surprise, but he specifically mentioned Cael Uno, Ishii (don't know his first name), and Kid Yammamoto (sp?). How do you see UFC introducing Kid into the division? How many fights til a title fight?
Kid Yamamoto would get a top 3-5 lightweight right out of the shoot. You'd think he'd be no more than two UFC victories away from a title shot, right?
Stephan Bonnar = Gatekeeper???
Perhaps he would be relegated to that status now, given his so-so UFC record. But I still think Bonnar is very capable of competing with top names at 205. He may be a gatekeeper, but don't be surprised if he racks up some wins in that role.
Too soon for Lidell/ Jones??
Yup. The Jon Jones bandwagon is getting crowded, but I expect the UFC to handle his rise slowly, deliberately. Not disimilar to the way they've handled Shane Carwin.
Is Lesnar/Mir at UFC 98 official? Sherdog.com didn't have it listed on the card.
Jon, It's Cowboy Time!!! Sorry to ring the cowbell on this one, but your boy Stephan Bonnar might be sent down to Class AAA soon after that performance.
Ouch. Cowboy Ron back with a bang. I tend to think it was more Jon Jones looking great than Bonnar looking terrible.
Jon Jones vs Rich Franklin?
I'm intrigued. But now that Joe Silva and Co. see what they have in Jon Jones, I think they will be very careful in selecting his next opponent.
...just not sure he's ready for a prime Rich Franklin...although, Bones would tell you otherwise. His entrance song was the best of the night, too.
Hey bandwagon guys - FIGHT OF THE CENTURY me vs. Bobby Lashley!!!!!! LOL!
hey jon, I was wondering if I was the only person who thought that lyoto should get next crack at the belt. dana white said that if jackson beats jardine that he will have first crack. since jardine lost his last fight I don't see how he would be higher up the ladder than lyoto since jardine is coming off a loss from silva who got killed by jackson.
Jared- While it's hard to argue against an immediate title shot for Machida, isn't it also hard to argue against Rampage? Many believe Quinton Jackson deserved a rematch with Forrest Griffin for the title. His traffic episode got in the way of that, but I understand why the UFC still sees Rampage as the No. 1 contender. Machida is right behind him.
Did you hit up any of the after parties after the fights on Saturday?
My after-party was at the blackjack tables at the MGM Grand. Sorry to disappoint.
What is the point of seeing Rampage vs Jardine? Rampage just knocked out a man who knocked out Jardine in 36 seconds?
Wish I had an answer, Bobby.
Just a note on Bonnar. In Dana's live blog video, it shows after the fight Dana hugging Bonnar, telling him to cheer up and that he and Forrest will never lose their UFC status, the UFC owes them too much.
Yes, I saw that, Robert. And it was nice to see and hear.
Dan Miller/Rosholt - probably the most evenly matched fight on the card Saturday - thoughts?
I agree, Robert that it is the most evenly-matched fight on the card. A bit surprised that Rosholt is a +220 underdog. That's from The Venetian in Las Vegas as of yesterday.
If Cain puts on an impressive performance this Saturday who do you see him fighting next?
Perhaps the Shane Carwin-Gabriel Gonzaga loser. Perhaps Minotauro Nogueira.
I agree with Jared, love the subs by the way. I don't see why Rashad and Lyoto can't fight and then match the winner against Rampage. Lyoto and Sugar could fight tomorrow.
It makes sense, David. I think the UFC really wants to stage a Rashad-Rampage title fight, though. And Machida could definitely interfere with that.
I think that Jake "Rocky Dennis" Rosholt gets outclassed on Saturday. Great future, just too soon
And the Vegas oddsmakers share your sentiment.
What did you think of Akihiro Gono's entrance and do you feel that there is a place for that in the UFC with mma trying to go mainstream?
It's a good point, Marcus. I was actually on the air for the Gono entrance, as we were doing our preview show inside the arena. I'm all for flair, but perhaps it leads to some misconceptions about the legitimacy of MMA.
Out of curiousity how has the volume and quality of questions on these chats changed since you first started?
Last week, we had almost 1,000 questions submitted. Our first chat had about 50. I just try to answer as many questions I can, and as quickly as I can, Hondo.
Jon, what upcoming UFC fight has you jumping out of your chair and getting a high top fade because you are so excited? (what's up to all US Veterans!)
A lot of good upcoming fights, GP. I like Luis Cane-Steve Cantwell. Curious to see Wilson Gouveia-Nate Marquardt. The list goes on...Maia-Sonnen...
Jon, not enough estrogen in today's chat. Scott Smith was once touted as a banger who could really be on the road to big exposure. Now he is toiling in Jared Shaw's basement and drinking Monster energy drinks, playing XBox. What does his future hold?
Hahaha...M'Arcy increasing the comedic value in this chat ten-fold. Scott Smith has competed since the EliteXC debacle- a devastating and quick KO of Terry Martin for Strikeforce. I'd expect him to compete, and for Strikeforce soon.
Update: MMA Live Episode #39 is up! 39 shows already, and that doesn't include Vegas...wow.
Could you imagine a fight with Jon Jones and Lyoto Machida? I'm not saying Jones is ready for that type of competition, I'm basing this on how awkward both their styles are... it would be nuts!
Agreed, Ahmed. Now we just need to exercise some patience.
Wat are your thoughts on Jon "Bones" Jones? His takedowns and throws are sick. At 21 you have to believe he'll be a contender in the years to come, correct?
A lot of Jon Jones love in the chat today. And yes, I'm as high on his performance as everyone else. A future contender for certain.
Jon. Who do u think is the best pound 4 pound in mma.
It's a difficult week to answer that question. I'll stick with Fedor for now. GSP and Anderson Silva are right on his heels.
If Henderson beats Bisbing and his next fight would be against Silva, does he move down to 185 or does Silva move up to 205?
Any interviews on today's show? Your prfight interviews with Bonnar and Fisk were great, by the way. I did not know Fisk had a sense of humor.
Yeah, Jon Fitch was in a great mood when I had the 1-on-1 with him last Thursday. No major guests on the show today, but if anyone missed it, be sure to go watch the MMA Live at UFC 94 Post-Fight Extra. Interviews with GSP, Guida, Jon Jones, and Karo Parisyan.
Right now on ESPN there is a 40-question poll with one question being: What do you like more MMA or bowing? Currently boxing has a slight lead. Are you surprised by that?
I am surprised that boxing has a slight lead. MMA Nation better go change that after the chat!
yeah...i didn't know that either...
Will Andrei Arlovski be more sucessful in MMA or boxing?
He's already realized a lot of success in MMA, and that would be tough to duplicate in boxing. However, given the dearth of top boxing heavyweights, were AA to devote himself 100% to the sweet science, he could be staring up at a Klitschko pretty soon.
Is Karo is no-mans-land? Nobody wants to see him get a title shot, but he's still better than most at his weight? What did you think of his awkward "I think I've already made a name for myself, Kenny" comment?
Yeah, it got a little contentious there on set. I couldn't believe Karo kept listing guys he took lightly...Dong Hyun-Kim, GSP, Thiago Alves. Didn't come away all that impressed.
Where does Carlos Condit stack at the WW Division???
I say bottom half of the Top 10. The Venetian in Las Vegas has Condit as a -160 favorite against Martin Kampmann. That just gives you some idea of how good people think Condit is. And I think he's worthy of that line.
When is Affliction going to create another card? Do you think that this (3rd event) is going to be their make or break chance?
Probably not until July or August. Way too long in-between cards to build any appreciable momentum.
Sam Caplan has an article basically stating the the WEC has run it's course. Do you agree, or do you feel that the casual fan will accept the lighter weights - they tend to hold the more exciting fights (on avg - like boxing)
Another intriguing piece from Sam. He makes a lot of good points. My lone dissenting argument would be that the UFC is already over the # it would like to be at, in terms of total fighters. Adding two more divisions would be tough. But I do think Sam is right, and it will happen, eventually.
Do you see a title fight for Anthony Johnson anytime soon? How many more fights till Anthony gets a shot? Personally, I think Johnson could give GSP a run for his money, if only because of Johnson's size.
Good question, Bryan. I think Rumble rolls over Luigi this weekend. And he's certainly a name to monitor at 170. As for # of fights until a title shot, I'd say 3-4 wins. But I'm just throwing that out there...not based upon any internal conversation or source.
Affliction will never be taken seriously until they can develop a beyond solid card that does not include Fedor.
Do you see Matt Hughes having anything left in the tank? And if so will he ever get another title shot?
I think the fight with Matt Serra will be the last for Hughes. His days of fighting for the title are done. Next stop? UFC Hall of Fame.
61 is better then 52
Yeah it is. And 81 is better than 61.
I'm a rather new MMA fan, sorry if you've answered this before, Whats the ceiling with kenny florian and who does he fight next?
No problem, Jason. More than happy to have some new MMA fans in the chat. Kenny's next fight will definitely be for the lightweight title. It should be against BJ Penn, as long as BJ is down for it. As for Kenny's ceiling, he's not 26. He's gonna be 33 soon, so it's not like he's a prospect or up-and-comer. I will say I think he is peaking as a fighter right now, and would love to see him taste UFC gold. He truly deserves it.
Any chance of a GSP/Anderson Silva fight?
Yes. 2010, as long as they both keep winning.
Jon, I loved how GSP responded to the A.Silva/GSP potential matchup by saying he would need much time to prepare his body and put on more muscle to level the playing field size-wise. I think that sort of attitude will result in better fights when fighters move weight classes, rather than the GSP-Penn affair we witnessed on Saturday. As the sport grows, and fighters become better in all disciplines, things like "this guys bigger" will make a huge difference. Do you follow?
Agree. Couldn't have put it better. Mixed martial arts is evolving to such an extent. Royce Gracie wouldn't be submitting the light heavyweights of 2009.
Sorry Jon please allow me to clarify my last question - I meant will the casual fan accept the WEC for adopting 125 - leaving them with 25,35,45,55
Well, as long as the fights are good, isn't that what matters? I'll admit to having little to no interest in the flyweights, but WEC cards always deliver.
What are the rumors for UFC 100? It has to be an absolutely massive card, right?
No real tangible rumors, Mike. Fighters' calendars make it very difficult to come up with a huge, elaborate plan. Perhaps you'll get two title fights at the top. I think it will be in Las Vegas, either July 11th or July 18th.
best place to party in vegas? rob and i need 2 know the hot spot for ufc 98
Hard to go wrong in Sin City. I've heard XX at Wynn is awesome. I like Tao at the Venetian, Tabu at MGM or Mandalay. More of a sportsbook guy myself.
Do you think that Team Florian views BJ Penn differently after seeing his fight this past weekend? In other words, will they prepare differently?
Kenny answers that exact question from MMA Nation today on MMA Live. Gotta tease when I can, Jim.
Is Kenney ever going to take a turn on the chat machine? Not that I'm trying to get rid of you or anything?
He was here last week, and I tried to make him sit down. I think he went to film MMA for Dummies instead. I will forward the request his way.
...at least I know how he thinks...or so I think...
When does fadors contract end with affliction
Not sure, Jeff. It's a joint deal with M1-Global. I'll ask McNeil. Send the question to email@example.com.
Jon, Why wouldn't UFC 100 be on the 4th of July? GSP/Alves and Evans/Machida or Rampage would be a great start to the card.
Could be on the 4th of July, but I'm hearing it won't be.
Do you think GSP can eventually move up to 205, since interviews during PRE UFC 94 said he is very strong, & could he beat the Spider?
I think 185 would be his limit. Now, could he beat several high-level light heavyweights? Yes, but he can make 170 with ease.
Why did you guys sell the Arlosvki vs. Fedor Rematch. Andrei was beating him until he made a mistake in peoples eyes. We need to have a rematch to make clear. I think if Andrei sticks to his gameplan he will win. Just like Paul Buentello beat Kiril aka. Baby Fedor. Speed Kills.
I didn't sell it, Rolando. That was Florian and McNeil. And I tried to make your point. If people say AA won the first round in dominant fashion (I wouldn't go that far), then why wouldn't you want to see a rematch?
What do you think Alves' strategy will be going into the GSP fight?
Stand and trade. Throw a bunch of kicks to wear him down. Thwart takedowns at all costs.
Sorry to go back to Guida, but I had a serious problem with his fight against Diaz. While everyone was glowing about his transformation to a more cerebral fighter, I thought it was just plain boring. Granted, he got the W (the only thing that matters in the ring), it would seem that this style would alienate his followers and lower his crowd appeal, which is not what you want in this sport. Agree or disagree?
There is no classier act in the UFC than Clay Guida, but you have a point. I thought The Carpenter stalled quite a bit to get the W. Diaz deserves the bulk of the criticism, though. He couldn't get anything going, in my opinion.
Is jardine a live dog? Whats up with the sandman moving down to 185? The bellator tourney is gonna be awesome, how do you see it?
Don't see Jardine as a live dog. Don't care much about Irvin moving down to 185, although I was a bit surprised to hear it. As for Bellator, very excited to see MMA on ESPN Deportes. Some good names on the roster...Eddie Alvarez, WIlson Reis, etc.
Buy or Sell: Vitor Belfort's next fight will be back in the UFC.
Buy. He's a free agent.
GSP/Alves...GSP is actually going to be the smaller man that night. Hard to fathom.
Could be 10-12 pounds smaller when they enter The Octagon.
Just joining the chat while at work. What match at the UFC in Ohio do you see as a sleeper/surprise. Looking forward to Carwin vs. Gonzaga!
I'm a big fan of the Columbus card. Matt Hamill-Mark Munoz...Hamill could have his hands full...some value on Munoz in that spot. Also excited to see Gray Maynard against Jim Miller in a very important fight at 155.
How about Jon Jones vs. Mark Coleman? It would be new guard vs. old guard. Nonetheless, the WWs and LHWs are stacked in the UFC!
I wouldn't wish that upon Mark Coleman. I like your creativity, though.
You could see the defeat in penns eyes with the way gsp handeled him. How much will th is change his future opponents strategy and how much confidence will it give them.
Watch MMA Live to get the answer from Kenny Florian. I still think BJ Penn can roll out of bed and beat most of the fighters in the UFC. He's still a confident guy. About as naturally gifted as any MMA fighter I've ever seen.
Hi Jon, who do you think will win the upcoming Matt Serra vs, Matt Hughes fight, and how long before the winner gets another crack at GSP for the title?
Not sure either one is on the cusp of a title shot. Leaning towards Hughes in the fight.
What fight u think is next 4 forrest griffen and will he get another title shot
He is injured, so it remains to be seen. But you'd think Forrest Griffin would be back in the title mix with another high-profile victory.
Who would win in a fight, Jon Jones or a hurricane?
Jon Jones, obviously.
Smokin' Joe Villasenor would also be favored over a tropical storm of any kind.
I know it's early, but don't think Chael Shonnan has a little more than a slight chance to defeat Maia on 2/21?
Ummm...I don't know, Jim. You're talking to a guy who is sky-high on Maia. Not down on Sonnen, but I think Maia will submit him. I'm going out on a limb, huh?
Randy Couture vs. Lyoto Machida at LHW, if Rampage beats Jardine, and give the winner a title shot? Just call me Joe.
I hear Couture is staying at heavyweight.
Am I the only one who has no interest in the Serra v Hughes fight? I feel like the steam behind that one is long gone for most fans. Are they really capable of putting on a good show?
I think the legitimate animosity between the two will make it a good, if not great, fight. But we do get a lot of questions about it, so the buzz is there, Hondo.
What if the Tropical Storm's name was TS Smokin' Joey Villasenor?
UFC needs to have some sort of MW, LHW tournament or something. That last card was painful to watch. TOO many decisions! You agree?
Tournaments in the UFC are a thing of the past. But I would agree that the UFC 94 card, up until Machida, was below average at best.
What do you say to people that say MMA is vicious or too violent?
Not enough time to answer that in this forum. But football and boxing are far more violent, even if it doesn't appear that way. In MMA, fights are stopped. In boxing, you can be concussed, but as long as you can regain your feet in seconds, you are allowed to continue. And don't even get me started on football...a violent collision on every play.
How about Mark Colman vs an Eggplant? They may not be the same weight, but they are the same colour.
Bradley swings below the belt. Funny, though.
Alright, folks. Business calls. Thanks again for chatting with us. I vow to chat for at least 90 minutes next week. Enjoy Episode #39 of MMA Live. Go check out the MMA Live at UFC 94 Post-Fight Extra, and we'll chat again next week. Until then...-JA
