Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

The deadline is gone, so now we can look forward. Hurray! We'll take a few moments to look back, but then let's focus on the future. Ok? Glad you all could be here, and sorry about Wednesday. "10 years man. 10. 10 years. 10 years!! 10. Ten yeeeaaarrrsss!! 10 years!"

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Oh, and I've got a groovy cd, "Jazz and 80's" playing. Great jazzy sound to some of my faves from the hold high school/college years.

John (Santa Monica, CA)

Despite the fact that Kobe was the bigger star during the olympics, why does LeBron continuously get more media coverage from the US media.

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Partly because he's the best player in NBA history, for his age, I suspect.

Newman

Let me let you in on a secret. Zip codes? They're meaningless

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Thanks, fat man.

JZ (Palm Beach)

Thorpedo - you like the Cavs odds to win it, pending they get healthy?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

No, I would not list them as faves. But they are clearly in the running.

Kevin Love (Minneapolis)

So can Shelden Williams help me out a little?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

I still think he can find a role. But he may have lost his spirit.

Zach (Burlington, IA)

Where does John Salmons fit in on this Bulls team? Does he start and let Ben Gordon go back to the 6th man, or does he become the back up 1,2,3?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

First guy off the bench in the short term at 2 and 3. Kirk still backs up Rose. But I'm not sure he'll be a good player in that role.

Magic Fan (Orlando,FL)

Does alston make the magic contenders again?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

No.

Mike (Akron)

Great job on the quote...you should have used the poem that is given to Cusak at the reunion. Anywho, would you have liked the Cavs had they traded for Shaq? Not sure if he would have meshed well with that teams chemistry. And are you surprised the Cavs didn't do anything else?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Good call. "Grosse Pointe Blank" is a top must see. I don't love the idea of Shaq in Bron Bron town. I am a little surprised they didn't do anything, yes.

Pete (Switzerland)

Experts are praising OKC deal for Thabo. So looking back on Thabo's time as a bull, what went wrong? Was he just a misfit there?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Didn't get any real run. I'm a fan.

Brian (McLean, VA)

the team i coach (9-10th graders) has our first playoff game tomorrow. we can beat a full court press easily, but struggle against a half court trap (which the other team institutes). i know to keep the ball towards the middle of the court but any other general advice on good ways to beat a half-court trap? thanks!

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Swing the ball just before your team crosses the half court line. Emphasize diagonal passes. And have your best dribbler attack the middle off a swing pass and get into the teeth of the zone. Yep, that'll do it.

Adrienne (Missouri)

Will you elaborate why you do not believe Alston will make the Magic contenders? I think that he was a steal considering what the Magic already had. I mean Anthony Johnson and Ty Lue? Eww.

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

He's no Jameer. It's as simple as that.

CC (New Jersey)

Four good games in a row for Anthony Randolph...will we see him climbing in the rookie rankings?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Likely!!

Gabriel (Bristol, CT)

Is Aaron Brooks ready for this? Will he be a Rajon Rondo or a Matt Maloney?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

In between, and I like Kyle.

Jake (VA Beach)

So are you a fan of all the Bulls' moves as much as Adande and Mashburn?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

No.

Fabin,Germany

Who's the best player you ever coached, who didnt make it in the league? keep up the good work !

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

Daniel Santiago is terrific when used right. Zabian Dowdell is an NBA player. So is Elton Brown.

Debbie (Monterey Park, CA)

Who are you interested in seeing now: new-look Knicks, new-look Bulls or new-look Kings?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Bulls probably.

Purdman (NYC)

Mike D'Antoni is obviously a super positive motivator, so you think he can revive the career of Larry Hughes, or jumpstart the career of Chris Wilcox? I can't wait to see some monster throwdowns for Wilcox off the pick and roll from Duhon.

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

Hughes will fit better in that system than almost any other. And Wilcox is underrated.

Chris (Phoenix)

Thorpe, Do you think that The Suns coaching change could have the biggest impact from the week of the trade deadline?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Without doubt.

Sam (Chicago)

The Bucks kept RJ, will they go all out and try for the 8th seed now?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

With Skiles as coach, you bet.

Jake (VA Beach)

So not a fan, but interested to see the Bulls. So care to elaborate a small bit?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

I'm not convinced that they 2 Kings will make a huge difference. I'm interested to watch and see if I'm wrong.

Dean (Chicago)

Not allot of insight in an answer "No" on if you like the bulls moves. It would be nice to get clarification, afterall people do appreciate your insight.

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Salmons is as much of a ball-stopper as BG, and a lot more whiny when he does not start. Miller is not a low post option on offense, and has not been healthy for a bit. Salmons also overrated as a defender.

Jeff (Baltimore)

Do Anthony Randolph's tears drop him in the rookie rankings?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

No, not at all. They only remind us of how young and immature he is. But young'uns grow up eventually.

Debbie (Monterey Park, CA)

I'm glad to see ESPN didn't trade you, David. Love your chats :)

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Thanks. I heard Yahoo offered a 6 pack of Yoohoo's and a dozen bagels. ESPN wanted more!!

Scott (Los Angeles California)

Why isn't there a reality show on nba tv of "Where are they now?" I'd be interested to see cameras following Isaiah Rider, Glenn Robinson, maybe Sasha Danilovich.

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

You'd be all alone.

Dave - Phoenix

Hey Dave - just an update for you. Amar'e Stoudemire is going to miss the next 8 weeks after undergoing eye surgery this morning for a detached retina. Ouch!

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Really?

Jake (VA Beach)

Can James White find a role in the NBA after his performance in the D-league dunk contest. Or, is that his limit?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Probably not.

Mike (Akron)

"Me??" "Yeah." "Go G?!" "Yeah." "On you?!" "Yeah." "Never!" Best part about Grosse Point is the interaction between Cusak and Dan Ak. Why didn't the Wizards trade Jamison? Are they still holding out hope? I figured thats at the bare minimum what the Cavs could have got for Wally.

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Great stuff!! Plus, the "10 years" line comes from Ari Gold. I think the Wiz are stuck on the idea of trying to play one season with a healthy roster.

Mark Toronto

Did T.O. or Sac get O'Bryant? Hoopshype shows him under Sactowns salary cap???

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

I think he is in Toronto. Europe next year, I'd guess.

PaulieP (SCottsdale)

RE Amare, KTAR in Phoenix is reporting the same thing. that sucks.

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Yes it does.

John (Santa Monica, CA)

Who is your current picks to win the NBA championship?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

It's not relevant. Those games are played in June.

clutchfans (h-town and china)

mr. thorpe happy year of ox to u!! u r the chairman mao of espn.com! do u think we can win a playoff series this season without tmac. and who can we beat in the 1st round??

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

I'd guess not.

Brandon(Atlanta,GA)

I know he isn't playing right now(not sure of the reasons) but wouldnt Steve Francis come at a pretty cheap rate for someone needing some firepower off the bench for a playoff push???

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

I think he's auditioning for Scott's "where are they now" show.

John, Switzerland

Do you think Thabo can succeed with the Thunder and is he going to start? Is Mason really out for the season?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Yes, I think Thabo could be a long term starter there. He fits in great with KD, Green, and Westbrook.

Mitch (SLC)

ThorpeNation! Is this just a good stretch for the Jazz, or do you think they can contend in the West when Booz gets back?

Romeo and Illinois

Mr. Thorpe, with the bulls making these two big deals, do u see them as a serious contender for one of the 2010 prize free agents? there are rumors Chicago is Bosh first option....

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

I'm sure Bosh will consider all options. No way he's locking in on any one target now.

Charlie (Hamilton, NY)

Did you read the Michael Lewis article about Shane Battier's undeniable value and influence on a team's ability to win? Why don't more players take the same sort of professional (almost scholarly) approach to defense that Battier does? There are a lot of smart guys in the league..

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

Loved every word of that. I always read Lewis, so it was great to read him discussing my world!!

Anthony (Florida)

I got a a fact why Kobe should be considered a better offensive player then Jordan was. When Jordan played there was no zone defense allowed. Kobe would of scored 50 a game in Jordan's era.

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

That's great, because the way refs call the games now, MJ might have averaged 60!

Mitch (SLC)

No response on the Jazz question ThorpeNation?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Sorry! It didn't post. I wrote that I doubt contention, but I think they'll make a respectable run.

Robert (Atl)

First I read that my favorite analyst (you) is on Facebook. Then this morning I discovered that my favorite player (Shaq) is on Twitter. Is this the new trend?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

That Shaq stuff was great. I think some of us just like to connect with a lot of people.

Casey (Sacramento)

Kings have any more hope than before? Possibly the next to last worst team instead of the last?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

I'm sorry, but 2011 is probably the first time Kings fans will be able to smile. But I think they have a plan now that just might work.

Joey (Chicago)

What does Phoenix do without Amare now, force Shaq to run up and down or slow it down again?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Lose a lot and cry.

Steiny (NYC)

What do you expect from Monta Ellis the rest of the season?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Continued improvement. It takes awhile to get the feelings back.

Elton Brand (PA)

Do you see my career as "done"?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

No.

Kris NJ

Do you think Spurs can withstand Manu's absence for 3 weeks?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Of course.

Scott (Sac town)

Thorpedo, You think this was the Kings clearing money because they were losing money? or because they need to sign a couple good free agents to turn this thing around when they get a new arena?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

It's all about clearing cap and gaining a roster spot or two going forward.

Don Nelson (The Bay)

My team is no longer an easy out. What now?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Lots of fun, to be sure. It's a great place to catch a game.

Donald Sterling

What would it take to get you to run my Clippers as far as coach or GM goes?

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

You would have to promise that you could somehow eradicate all diseases, or something grand like that. Because no amount of money would draw my interest.

Steve (Ithaca)

Friday and a Thorpe chat, what could be better? Did you watch HORSE, and if so, what did you think? The lack of trick shots made it a little ho-hum to me, but Durant's comeback (and range) was amazing. When is the general public going to catch on to how good he is?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

I watched twenty horrid seconds of the rookie game, and then shut off the tv for the rest of the weekend. KD is so special, when the Thunder get playoff good everyone will know.

Mike (NJ)

Do you think Brook Lopez can be ass good as Duncan?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

No. But he can be an all-star.

Tom (New York)

How could you not ban Anthony from Florida?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

It's Friday!!

Patty Buckets

You have to tell me whether or not Gallinari is going to be successful in this league, I cant handle another NYK bust

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

I think he will.

Dylan (alaska)

David, i thought some big trades were going to happen this year. was it owners not wanting to spend money? or what?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

Yes-every team it seems is counting dollars. I understand.

Chuck (Hardly Working)

What are the chances the Hornets eventually leave New Orleans?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

I have no idea. But I certainly hope it never happens.

Rock (Memphis)

What's up Thorpe, getting soft? Some dude asks if Brook Lopez can be as good as (actually "ass") Tim Duncan and he doesn't get banned?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

That's how high I am on Lopez.

Chad (Grand Rapids, MI)

Is it correct to say that the Piston's current struggles illustrate that basketball is a TEAM game, and that a talented group of individuals does NOT necessary make a good team?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

I think it's more about how important a coach is.

Chris(Cali)

If Lebron had Shane Battier's or Mike Miller's athleticism, would he be in the league?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Yes, his size and passing ability is still unique. It's a great question.

Vincent (Tucson, AZ)

Yo, Thorpe! Who first taught you basketball skills back in the day?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

No one really. Strategy and defensive fundamentals came from my high school coach.

Brian (Jersey)

You and Hollinger are my two favorites, which is why I love it when you two disagree. He says Hughes cant pass or shoot, which makes him a bad fit for Mike D's system, you seem more positive on the move. Thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

He won't be the first guy to play better in Mike's system.

Steven (Toronto)

Is it too early to have 7 and 8 year olds run 3 man weaves at practice?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Not at all. It's a great way to teach passing and catching while moving. Asking them to dunk at the end-that would be too much.

Ron (Portland, OR)

If a coach is so important - why are you so down on Nate in Portland getting the kids to be on pace for 50?

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

I'm not!!

Piss Poor Analyst

I don't understand how you have a job for ESPN. Your answers are short, don't really answer the question at hand and your the one that is picking these questions. You need to do your job a lot better.

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

So you're saying that maybe Yahoo didn't really offer anything for me?

Jim (Chicago)

Who's pick did the Bulls get for Thabo, the Suns or Nuggets ?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

I think Denver's.

Jennifer - Tempe

Should we Suns fans just give up on the year? Any chance Mikki Moore would help?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

Now that is almost a ban!! Mikki Moore and Amare-who would you rather have Jen?

Nick Miami,FL

Friday, Now you ruined my hump day!

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

Sorry. My family spent a few days at Universal. Plus, I wanted to wait until after the deadline.

Chris (Hacienda Heights, CA)

Am I the only person in the world, besides D-Wade, that thinks Miami actually has a shot of making a run at the title?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Yes.

Jason (Brooklyn)

Do you think there's anybody playing today who might be able to break McHale's record of 60% from the field and 80% from the line for a season?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Not likely.

Dan (Teaneck, New Jersey)

O.J Mayo is just a rookie, but he's already one of the best shooters in the league. However, he seems a bit one-dimensional on offense, as he doesn't get to the free-throw line as often as other top scorers. What can he work on to increase his free-throw attempts?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Lots more fakes. Back smaller pg's down into the post more. Drive into off-balance players more too.

Josh (Toronto)

Any chance O'bryant finds his game in TO?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

He has no game to find. Horrible draft pick.

Tony (Argentina)

great, now i'll have to watch amundson, robin lopez and maybe even courtney sims(?) for eigth weeks. Can the Suns still make the playoffs?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Very unlikely.

Rob Portland

Thorpe why didnt my blazers give up Rudy Fernandez (or Sergio or Steve Blake) to get Derrick Rose? If we had Rose we could be awesome

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

You pushed and you pushed. So fine, you get your ban. Wake up Rob!

Jim (NYC)

Hey DT, does Boston have any chance of winning home court if Garnett is out for any significant amount of time?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Probably not.

Wilbur (the left coast)

Thorpster, sorry to overload you with Kings Questions but with all the movement they didnt touch, Martin,Hawes,Thompson,Garcia, plus they are on the way to Blake Griffin, thats a pretty good core no?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

No. That's one possible all-star and maybe some rotation guys. We'll know in a year or so if JT and Hawes are starter good. Maybe they are. But they are still 2 all-stars short from being real contenders, and they are hard to get. Griffin is not a lock for them.

Charlie (Hamilton, NY)

Speaking of Mike Miller, I saw two games in a row he got stripped trying to drive from the top of the 3point line first by Caron then Wade. It was kinda funny-- talk about Miller not knowing his role. (You're a shooter, not a driver/slasher.) How do certain players go about protecting the ball on drives so as not to get it stripped by the defender?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

Hide the ball on the opposite him from the defender. Or wrap it up (Bron style). We teach both.

Cosmo (Anytown, USA)

What can be done to improve a player's basketball IQ?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

Lots of studying and teaching.

Chris (chicago)

word is kg has a torn acl? is this true?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

I hope not!!

Jonny, Queens

Whats your opinion of Ray Allen, not just now but over his career, he seems highly underrated athletically

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

He was a great athlete and super skilled-a rare combo.

Sean (Chicago)

I know Salmons isn't an ideal fit, but can he be a passable fit at SG next year if the Bulls lose Gordon as expected?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Possibly, but he's basically been a 3. And he's no BG as a scorer.

Sunny (NY, New York)

Lowry or Brooks - who's starting?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Brooks today. Lowry tomorrow.

The MPAA

How old will your boy have to be before he can sit down with you and watch something like say.. National Lampoons Vacation? Or maybe Caddyshack?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

great question. I'd say the twins will be ready for that by 12 or so. The PG 13 version anyway.

Chris(Cali)

Coach, do you agree with my statement...Lebron is an elite athlete that plays basketball and Kobe is a good basketball player who happens to be a good athlete?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

No. Both are elite athletes with elite skills.

Cosmo (Anytown, USA)

As a teacher, when watching an NBA game, what frustrates you the most about the average NBA player?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Poor passing skills. Lack of heart.

Chris, Ca

David, love your chats. Dont know what that guy was talking about, you give great insight on things, and you answer more questions than any other host. Keep up the good work. Your views on life and your family are what others should strive for.

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Thanks Chris. Just doing things the only way I know how.

Sean (Chicago)

I know he's not BG scorer but hopefully he's not a BG defender either (I know Gordon isn't as terrible as some suggest but he's not good either). The Bulls just need someone to stand at the 3pt line in that spot, maybe slash now and then. Ideally Rose and Deng should be the focus of our offense right now.

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

Good point. BG always has to be a focus on offense, he's amazing at that end.

EJ (Atlanta)

There's no excuse for a guy like Josh Smith to have games with no rebounds right? What is his problem?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

He's always been a mystery. Just kind of floats too much.

Wolves Fan

I would have taken Bobby Brown the singer just to get rid of Rashad McCants

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

I think both teams are happy with that deal.

Chad (Grand Rapids, MI)

Can you think of any guys in the NBA who can only play ONE position?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

Of course. There are many. Can you?

Mike (Akron)

Regarding Chris from Cali's question? Do you think LeBron would be the best TE in the NFL right now? Or maybe even the best LB? 6 '9 280 and that quick is beyond freakish. Gotta think he would come close to killing a qb. Admit it, it would be interesting to watch.

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

I'd play him as a DE.

Jonny, Queens

Is Lebron a top 5 passer in the league, vision wise?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

Probably.

Chris (San Diego)

Love the chats Mr. Thorpe! Bulls moves - no superstars, but it seems like the players they acquired fit much better. Miller isn't going to launch 20 footers all day (Gooden)and Salmons currently is a much more efficient player than Nocioni. Just seemed like the moves improved fit without hurting long term goals.

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

Great point about Miller. Deng should get an extra bucket a game from Brad on a slash to the rim.

ed ny

what do the Suns do now that stoudemire is out?

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

Punt.

Don (Edmond, OK)

Coach, Do you think Westbrook is a true point or would the Thunder be better off to move him to 2 and get another point?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

He's not a true pg, but who cares. With the right guys around him he can man that spot really well.

Jeff (NYC)

Regardless of what happens in 2010, I'm pretty impressed with Donnie Walsh as a GM. He managed to trade Jerome James!!!! Tell me that isn't amazing Thorpedo!

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

He's obviously good at what he does.

Boudreau (Grosse Pointe)

I'm coming for ya! Bing Bing Bang, Popcorn!

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Great way to end this week. Thanks everyone and I'll chat again on Wednesday at our normal time. Have a great weekend and be safe!!
