Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:00 PM)

Hello sportsnation. Thanks for joining our merry group. Let's get started. I've got Mozart's " Die Zauberflote" going, so it's all good. "It's just like the Titanic, but it's full of bears!!!".

Jimmy Mac (Chicago)

Hey David, I think Thabo is going to be a perfect fit in OKC. Do you see him being a Pippen-type stopper defensively? What's his ceiling? I'm really a fan of how he disrupts opposing teams into bad decisions.

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Perfect fit, maybe. He's no Pippen, but he should compliment their scorers very well and play great d.

dave, ny

You dave Im confused why is marbury so coveted I mean he isnt that good

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Dave, we all want to know the same thing.

Brian (Durham, NC)

Hey Mr. Thorpe, if Eric Gordon continues to drop 20+ and chip in with 4 boards/4 assists a game... what are the chances he can be ROY? Thanks and keep up the good work!

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

No-the team is too bad and too many others have played well for a longer period.

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

By the way-this Mozart opera may be better known to you as "The Magic Flute".

Rob (Portland, OR)

Would Blake Griffin's recent concussion worry you if you were thinking abut drafting him?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Not by itself, but I would want more history.

Mario Florida [via mobile]

Why wouldn't the celtics add someone to back up the 2 or 3 spot off the bench instead of a 5th big?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Like who?

Jacob (Bhosadi ki aulad, Oregon)

Beasley's been looking awfully good lately. Any chance he wins ROY?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Very unlikely.

Rocko (NY)

Speaking of rookies, who is your rookie of the year right now Thorpedo?

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

4 way time. The report should be up and published soon. We did a video scout as well on Lopez.

Sportsnation

YOU SUCK!

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

But I just got started? Can't I get warmed up first?

jackie (LA)

How surprised would you be if Gilbert Arenas posted 25ppg and 6 dimes next season after taking virtually 2 years off?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Not very. He's very special.

Jon (Mad-town)

How do you like the Bulls chances to make the playoffs after all of their trade deadline moves?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Excellent, especially considering the issues facing some of the other teams.

Dan (NY)

If you had to sign one: Krypto-Nate or D. Lee?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Lee.

charlie (chicago)

The bulls are playing some really inspired basketball of late, save the bad early morning loss to the pacers. I feel that the road team seems to always come out flat in the noon or earlier tip offs, your thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

Agreed. It's up to the road team to get themselves up and ready. I like my guys to work up a bugger sweat than usual in their pre-game drills.

Cesar (Tempe)

How much you want to bet Majerle is the Suns head coach next season! GUARANTEED my friend!

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

Thanks for the tip.

Jad (Arlington, VA)

Is Brook Lopez a shock to you? Top 5 Center in 2-3 years is that a stretch?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

I didn't see him enough in college to be shocked now. he was good in summer league. Top 5 center in 3 years is likely, I'd guess.

Mike (Mpls)

Earlier in the year I was thinking Kevin Love was the Corelli of basketball (very underrated) but lately I have noticed his +/- has been atrocious. How much stock do you put in a stat like +/-?

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

Not much overall, but i do look at it nightly. It's a small chapter of a big book.

Nizar (Detroit)

What is Stephen Curry's ceiling? Dell Curry or Ray Allen?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

A quicker Mike Bibby.

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

With a smaller entourage.

Justin (MN)

Thorpedo thank you for saving me from at least an hour boredom today at work! What is Kevin Love's ceiling? Can he be a Chris Webber-type at least when it comes to rebounding and facilitating the offense?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

I don't think he can be that kind of scorer. But he does have all-star potential.

Jon (Mad-town)

We all know you have a difficult time seperating Rose, Mayo, Lopez and Westbrook this year, but which one would you take for the next 5 years?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

They are close enough that I'd have to see what else my team has. I can make an argument for everyone but Mayo-he's special but not as unique.

Eric Gordan (LA)

You just hate me because I'm better then you at everything. I even listen to Mozart better then you do.

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Hate you? I think not.

Russ, Granada Hills CA

Who is really in the conversation about the BEST closer in the NBA besides Kobe?

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

Wade.

G (DC)

David - did you read the NY Times "Money Ball: NBA" piece, and do you have any thoughts on adjusted +/-, the new school of NBA management (Morey et al.), or whether Battier is really as good as claimed?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

Devoured that article. Yes, I'm a huge fan of Shane.

JR (Chicago, IL)

Brad Miller and Tim Thomas looked really good together last night. Not only that, they create a lot of space of Derrick Rose to operate.

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

I wasn't aware that the best offense is to create space for one guy.

Morgan (PA)

Do you think Hansborough will be as dominant as a NBA player than he is as is college?

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

That's risking a ban, Morgan. Of course not.

clark(baltimore)

Do you see the rockets going deep into the playoffs now that we know there is no TRACY coming back, and do we try to trade him in the offseason and re-up Artest. What other possible moves could we make?

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Deep, probably not. But they could win a series if they can get to seed 4-6.

Mike (Chicago, IL)

In an interview this past weekend, Tim Thomas said that back in Milwaukee Vinny told him to be succesful in the NBA a player needs to concentrate on being good at 3 things. Do you agree with that or do you take a more rounded approach with your players?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

More well rounded, without question. What are the Collins twins good at? Or Mikki Moore? Or Eddie House? 3 things?

Rocko (NY)

Is Joakim Noah's ceiling close to what Andris Biedrins is doing?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Yes, plus he's a far better passer.

the_truth [via mobile]

hey mr. thorpedo, got a question for you!, what do u think will happen to the celtics if ever they get marbury?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

What's that line the Queen says in "Shakespeare in Love" when asked about how things will end? "With tears, and a journey".

Michael (philly)

wow, so are you just the most pretentious guy on the planet? seriously, who name drops Mozart in German...

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Actually, I just cut and pasted it. Does that still impress you?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Incidentally, you would recognize some of the music from "The Magic Flute" if you have children-from the "Little Einstein" videos.

Antoine (New Orleans)

Mr. Thorpe you have your second great Collins twins joke in as many weeks. Keep up the good work!

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

What did I write last week?

Ray (San Antonio)

Lets get Tropical Thorpedo!

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

Nicely done!!!

Brett (Houston)

Hi Dave, do you think if DWade was ever moved strictly to point guard, he could transition himself to be mentioned in the same breath as CP3, DWilliams, Nash, etc.?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Maybe, but it would make no sense.

Katy (Spain)

Will Ricky Rubio be the number 1 pick?? And can you explain a bit who the lottery works, i don't find anyting on the net, can you help me

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

Rubio could be #1, depends on the team drafting. Every team that does not make the playoffs gets to participate in a lottery to see who gets to draft when.

Justin(chicago)

David, you may have to ban yourself. Sure Lopez has been good, but not being able to decide Rose over Lopez if you were starting a team? Really?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

I suggested that it would depend on who else we already had. Lopez is good enough that if we already have a good pg, we would take Lopez. Don't hate him because he does not jump out of the gym-he's really special.

Marcos (Wellingtin, FL)

Isn't Manu one of the best closers in the game too?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

I think he is.

Nick(Tampa)

Does C. Lee's vertical when shooting give him a higher ceiling as a scorer?

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Not by itself. It's his other talents that do, though i don't see him scoring big on that team for another 2 years.

Russ, Granada Hills CA

Do you see any problems with running up the score during high school games?

David Thorpe
  (12:24 PM)

I hate it, and never did it (except once when I was 23 and trying to impress a college coach in the stands-I was young and dumb). But the losing team just needs to focus on themselves and try to get better.

Mark (Sacramento, CA)

If you were running the Kings, what would you do from here to make the team competitive again?

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Develop all their young assets, Hawes, JT, DG, and the 3 picks up coming. Then keep some and move others for vets.

Steiny (NYC)

Do you think Nowitzki is going to be a Maverick for life?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Yes.

Rocko (NY)

Is Tyrus's offense looking more natural to you, or is it just me?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

Yes, he is getting more and more comfortable. But that could change with those new guys arriving. TT's mins will likely get cut again.

Lacy (Toronto)

Thorpe! Bargnani is so quick and coordinated for a big, yet he jumps like he's wearing metal boots - quite the disconnect. Is there anything he can do to improve his vertical?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

There's lots he can do.

Phillip

Thorpe. Who has the best all around game in the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

LBJ.

Ryan (Madison, WI)

Follow-up on Hansbrough - how good will/could he be? 14 and 8? Role player?

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

More like 7 and 5 guy, at least for a few years.

Morgan (PA)

You ever realize that you're probably the only ESPN analyst that averages 4 words per an answer?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

Is that bad...Morgan?

Rod (Ut)

David, you are such an east coast homer, it's ridiculous. Seriously, dude, it's getting old.

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

You mean LA has moved east? I have to read more articles. I grew up loving the Lakers. I have a 2nd son playing in Sacramento. Get over yourself.

Jason (Brooklyn)

Thorpe keeps his word / answer ratio low and his wisdom percentage high. That's why he's got our dream job.

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Jason to the rescue!! Thanks!

Mike (CA)

Is this Shelden Williams last chance in the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

Probably. But I hope he gets his spirit back and gets into great shape. He can be a rotation guy in this league.

JD Minny

Hey Dave, lovin' the chats, jus shake the haters off. Who's your dark horses in the West and East? Get tha funk out ya face!!!

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

In the east, I'd say...nobody. The west could be Utah or Houston.

Rocko (NY)

Coach, what is your definition of a Pure Point Guard?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

A ppg is someone who manages every aspect of the game except for scoring. Like Jacque Vaughn.

bob (Oakland)

Do you think larry hughes can contribute to helping the knicks reach the playoffs? How long before the rust wears off?

David Thorpe
  (12:33 PM)

I do, actually. He fits what they want. Give him another 2 weeks.

Jon (Mad-town)

Luol Deng is getting the reputation as a "soft" player in the league. Would you agree?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

He's 6th for sf's in double-doubles in the NBA, first or second in 2009. So I'd say no.

Victor (San Juan)

Will JJ Barea be Kidd's replacement at PG in the near future, or an NBA journeyman like Carlos Arroyo?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

He is an excellent backup.

Paul (Buenos Aires)

I think that Scotty Brooks is doing a good job in OKC, do you think that he should keep the job after this season?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Yes I do.

Charlie (Hamilton, NY)

Can you think of any player who has a wider spectrum of things thought about him than Rafer Alston? Kenny Smith thinks he's one of the best pgs in the league, others say he's one of the worst starters. Kinda funny.

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Kenny Smith has only watched half the league.

Myron Cope (Steel City)

DeJaun Blair: Paul Millsap or Michael Sweetney?

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Reggie Evans without the baggage.

Ben (NYC)

Thorpe - Speights a starter next year? what say you

David Thorpe
  (12:35 PM)

Yep.

Cosmo (Anytown, USA)

With the right amount of practice, what FT% should be expected throughout the league? It should be much much higher than it is, right?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

80% is the answer.

Mike (conn)

Do you think Charlie Villanueva's great year is an abberation or him just realizing his immense talent?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

It's no surprise players play better when being pushed.

Chris Paul

My team can't afford me. Where should i go next?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Wherever they have a shooter on the wing and a high flyer inside.

mendel (fl)

wade puts up 50 on sunday night and hands out 16 dimes tuesday night. hes leading lebron in ppg, steals, blocks and assists is there any chance he can still get the mvp?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

Not unless the HEAT win more often down the stretch. A lot more often.

Jeff (philly)

So by your earlier definition, is Rondo the best pure point guard in the league?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

He's right there.

Logan (Tulsa, OK)

No one seems to want to touch this question. Should I not get too attached to this young and exciting Thunder team? I have a bad feeling Durant will bolt for greener pastures as soon as he gets a chance. Tell me I'm just paranoid.

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

You are. KD will love playing for a city rabid about their team much like TD is down in Texas.

Rocko (NY)

Is Luol Deng really a good fit in the Bulls offense, when he lacks the 3-point shot around a playmaking Point Guard like Derrick Rose?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

It's not that-he actually is an excellent shooter with range. But he may lack the top 1 on 1 skills that seem to be needed in that offense.

Rick(New Orleans)

Hey Dave, I know you are a Facebook guy. Are you constantly changing your profile pic and updating your status every hour?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

No. Same profile pic I started with, and I usually update my status once a day. Is that bad?

Vin

"Reggie Evans without the baggage". Take it your not a big DeJaun Blair fan

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

On the contrary-I'm a huge fan!! Evans should have been a first round pick and has made lots of money playing in the NBA.

Brian (Michigan)

Why does Ben Gordon get criticized so much? He's a great shooter/scorer and has been very consistent. Yeah he's not very good on defense but he can't grow 3 inches.

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

If the NBA had a 1 on 1 contest, BG would win the 6'4 and under division. He's simply spectacular as a shotmaker.

Katy (Spain)

david, do you answer all the questions

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

You mean that are asked ? No, I'm over 740 questions as of now, with over 1000 likely before 1pm. But yes, I am the only one here typing, if that's what you mean.

Rocko (NY)

So what type of point guard is Chris Paul if he averages 20 a game?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

An amazing one.

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

I think the official term for CP3 is "super fantastic point guard".

Spencer (SLC)

Ben Gordan better than Dwill or CP3 I don't think so...

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Believe it.

Troy Madison, WI

A lot of hype about Ramon Session. Do you think he'll be a force someday or no better than his current slightly higher than league average PER?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Not a force, but a solid starter.

Ben (NYC)

Will rondo ever develop a 3 pointer?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

Not likely.

Rich (NYC)

Biggest surprise player thus far?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Roger Mason Jr. maybe?

Matt (Rhode Island)

Can you explain your Marbury hatred for me? He looked in great shape in preseason, and other ESPN analysts seem to think he will help Boston.

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

I've known him since he was 16. So let's just leave it at that.

JB (Tucson)

Which NBA stat is the most overrated as far as actually helping a team win? I say it's blocks, as a lot of them don't even result in a change of possession, and many result in an easy basket for your opponent.

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

But good shot blockers effect far more shots than what they actually block. I'd go with...fouls.

Tim(DC)

I just found out that Gerald Green only has 4 fingers on one hand but is on a NBA roster isn't that remarkable?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

You mean remarkable that you just found that out?

Ben (NYC)

Whose the high school player that's getting the most hype right now???

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

I've no clue. Couldn't name a single one other than Nathan Sowada, the son of my best friend growing up.

Patty (LA)

David, DON'T BAN ME, this is a serious question. Gulp, okay. I think Chris Paul is over-rated in the sense that I think he dominates the BALL too much and it can hurt his team. For example, he'll have 16 assists on the night, but the rest of the team combined will have 3 assists. That's not good ball movement and it makes the team too reliant on his getting everyone going. I don't think a team can win a title that way, and I wonder why no one ever talks about that. It's not good.

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Patty, let's just pretend that you didn't write that. Seriously. Just slink away and come back next week as if you've never been here before.

Jason (Brooklyn)

Do you think Russell Westbrook is a full-time solution at PG? Should the Thunder be looking for PG, an SG, or a big man right now?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

Yes, he's their pg of the future. Finding an athletic, shot blocking 5 or a rebounding machine is the answer for them.

Ash (Pittsburgh)

I have to say that when Barbosa of Phoenix is having a great game, he's extremely entertaining to watch. It's hard not to root for a guy like that either. One question is why does he never dunk even on wide open fast breaks?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

it might hurt his knees.

Starbury (Boston)

You're a bum. You're nothing. You're caught up in basketball. Get caught up in life

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

I rest my case.

Travis, SLC

No one ever talks about the deveolpment of Ronnie Brewer. His offense is getting better and better. His FG % is over 50%. He guards the best player on the other team usually every night. What is his ceiling?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Solid starter. I'm a big fan-he's perfect in that system.

James (Cleveland)

What do you think lebron is going to do next year, will he stays with the cavs or will he goes to the nets for his friend jayz

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Enough-we don't know!!

rob, toronto

who has the best nickname in basketball? im tired of the first initial and abbreviated last name...

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

Hibachi is cool. Agent 0 too.

mendel (fl)

so i guess you were of the school of thought that had lbj as the mvp before the season ever started. ill tell wade to add you to his hate list!

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

That's a ban!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mick (NY)

WHo's your pick for NBA champs?

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

It's not LA, since I hate the west. Or Boston, since I'm a Celtic hater. Or the Cavs, since I think LBJ may leave in 2010. Who's left?

David (houston, TX)

How do u keep track of who gets banned?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

David, between you and me, I don't. SSShhhh.

Jon (Charlotte, NC)

What are the ceilings for Roy Hibbert and Brandon Rush? Both have shown flashes of being great and both have shown flashes of NBDL, where can we expect them to be 4 years down the road?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

A pg, sf, pf, and a c. They may have the pf and c, both guys are just so young right now.

Pat (Chicago)

an athletic big who can block shots for the Thunder, you mea like Tyson Chandler? What the heck happened there anyway

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

Should make for an interesting story this summer.

Stefan Nellemoes (Denmark)

How come guys like Sean Williams don't realise that they have a special gift and use their freaking talent? If he was on a young team (besides the Nets) and getting 25+ minutes a night, he would have a nice boxscore often (Imma' stats-geek). Do you think he is a future starter somewhere?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

Why did Bernie Madoff do what he did? Some guys are just messed up in the head (sorry if that's too technical).

Graham, (Burlington Vt)

For all the people who complain about these chats, could you sift through a thousand questions and give responses with the expectation you know EVERYTHING and can please EVERYBODY?

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

1081 now, and yes, I'll try!

RapsFan

Did you see Bargnani dominate in Minny last night? He could get whatever he wanted, and only shot two 3s the entire night. How much upside does this guy have?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Considerable, if in the right system. He may be the biggest surprise thus far.

Pierce, Baltimore

Thorpedo, what position would you say you play when you're actually lacing them up?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

Depended on who I played with. I was a pg and a 2 in HS, then a scorer for my frat.

Joe Smith (Redwoodville)

Who is your favorite player?

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Magic, Magic, Magic. That is it.

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Time to go, but thanks to all of you. Hope you had fun. See everyone next week. Have a nice weekend and be safe.
