Hey everyone. Lets get this started.
I'm expecting the Broncos to be somewhat active during free agency. Who do you think they'll target?
They really have no choice but to be active considering the state of their defense. I suppose I would consider a RB like Ward if the price was right, but for the most part, Den has to attack their D and find guys with 3-4 experience will be key, so DEs like Olshansky and Canty would be ideal.
I've read that Jeff Saturday has expressed some intrest in playing for the Steelers. What are the odds of this happening?
Makes sense for him, but Hartwig didn't do a poor job as the season went along-although Hartwig could play OG. However, Saturday won't break the bank, but he also will not be cheap at all and PGH needs a bigger guy at OC considering their division and what they want to do on O. Saturday is a very good player, but more of a finesse/technique player.
Good signings for Oakland with Lechler and Asmougha or just another financial nightmare, regardless of how good they both are?
Maybe both. I really can't have the slightest bit of faith in what this front office does with their money, but both are excellent football players and maybe the best player at their respective position. But, if you are in the Raiders, you might have to overpay to get free agents locked up.
Hey Matt, I've been getting a huge laugh from your constant ripping of Denvers move to the 3-4. You've just been killing them for it. Thanks for the laughs.
No problem, but if you really want to chuckle, listen to what I have to say about GBay's (& KC's to a lesser extent) move to their new odd front. GBay was at least successful on D lately and they throw that all away. Rediculous.
Im hoping the chiefs go after some people this year in free agency, any idea who they will look into picking up?
KC showed some signs of life last year despite their horrible record, but...they honestly need help everywhere. Everywhere. Okay, maybe not at WR, but probably everywhere else if Gonzo and LJ leave town. Not sure that Gonzo will leave, but LJ is probably gone. So...what positions do you then feel comfortable with? Here is my KC wish list in no particular order: A Bigger RB, a Franchise QB, Two OLinemen, A TE, 1 or 2 3-4 DEs, Maybe a NT, At least one 3-4 OLB and ILB, Probably one Safety and CB. WOW! It is prob a slightly rosier picture than I paint and I would prob ignore QB for the immediate future, but not much rosier.
With the Chiefs switch to a 3-4, will they be forced to trade Dorsey? Does he excell in a 3-4? What do you think we will get for trading Tony G?
Gonzo might get you a late 2nd rounder from a contender who needs just one or two more pieces. That is best case scenerio. I would guess that Dorsey will be the NT, but what a waste of an extremely promising prospect. Dorsey got too heavy last year and supposedly the former coaching staff encouraged that to help him eat space, but this guy needs to be a Sapp/T Harris type penetrator. Its a nightmare.
Hey Matt, What are the chances of Ray Lewis becoming a Dallas Cowboy and how would it affect the team financially??
Can't really comment on the financial side of it, but their cap has to be real tight. I see him staying in Balt-just think about how many 52 jerseys are in that crowd-but if he does leave, he is a J Jones type of signing for sure. I also doubt that one player can completly change the locker room/face of the team.
What are the chances the Giants will go after Percy Harvin? Do you think he would be a good fit?
Not a bad fit, but I really don't see him as a true #1 WR. If they happen to land someone like Housh, Harvin would be great on the other side. But-I don't think Harvin is real NFL-ready from a WR standpoint and NYG needs immediate help. Harvin would be excellent as a specialty player and returner immediatly though.
Is going AWOL from the Combine the worst move ever by a potential #1 draft prospect? I thought it was pretty funny when Ryan Leaf said he would go to Vegas if got drafted #1, pretty much summarized his character.
Says a lot. I heard Mel Kiper on their podcast today and he said it best. It isn't 1975. This is 2009. EVERY prospect has to get great representation and understand what is expected of them. Get coached up. Such an immature move.
Any truth to the rumors about the Skins and Haynesworth contract? If so, does this make sense for the Skins?
No idea if they have a handshake deal or not, but it wouldn't surprise me. Haynesworth is on my Buyer Beware list. Of course, he can be great, but it also would not shocked me if his production dipped a great deal after signing a monster deal. So-in that regard-he is right up Washington's alley.
Hey Matt, what do you think about the Titans landing Plaxico Burriss,
Assuming that Plex is healthy and not in jail, I bet many teams line up for his services. Difference maker. Tenn MUST find a true #1 WR and who else can they really get? Maybe two or three other options and the comp for their services will be firece. But, Fisher certainly puts a lot of value on character and won't put up with Plex rolling in late for every meeting, etc. Tough call.
Will the Vikings do anything in free agency or just address needs thru the draft?
Curious what the Rosenfels deal really means. To me, this guy just turns the ball over WAY too much for the Vikes, who need to win with D and Peterson. But, the price was right for a potential starting QB. To me though, they can't be done at this position. They need to add one more QB-J Garcia? But, an OT like Oher would be an excellent first rounder and I hear they are looking to lock up Birk.
Matt, Do you see David Maclin from Missourri being a #1 reciever in this league? Also if Crabtree runs a 4.7, can he be a #1 reciever?
If Crabtree runs a 4.7 and is completely healthy, then I would worry. If he is in the midst of recovery or out of shape from the surgery, then I take it with a grain of salt. I still think Crabtree is star. Just take him if the medical checks out. I really like Maclin. Not sold that he is a true #1 though, but I am very tough on throwing that term around. Maybe only 15 true #1s in this league. Give or take. Still, love Maclin.
Has there been any rumblings about any players actually getting dealt? I know that Boldin is a possibility, but what about other guys like the Skins corner Carlos Rogers? Thanks.
Both seem very possible to me. Vick for sure. Plex? Holt? LJ. Gonzo. Could be quite a few really. Most skill pos guys though.
Matt, whats wrong buddy I can sense it in your typing that you cant seem to get over the Pitt loss last night. Go UCONN!
Oh-you are going there, eh? You did watch Pitt/UConn right? No worries.
What about the 49ers? Is Shaun Hill the guy or not? Will they draft a qb? I have no clue what they are trying to do with the team? Do they? Do you have any suggestions?
Not sure that they have a clue, but I really like Sanchez and would not pass on him. However, I wouldn't force myself to take a QB and could live with Hill for one more year to further evaluate. One QB note as we head into free agency-there are some cheap talented options out there in guys like Simms, Losman, Boller, Grossman, etc. SF should grab one of those perhaps. Also, I am not totally ready to flush Alex Smith. Don't get me wrong, he has been terrible, but SF has done a horific job of developing him-no weapons, rotating OCoordinators, etc.
Do you think the Steelers resign Chris Kemo? I think they should let him walk and completely revamp this o-line.
I tend to agree with you. He isn't special and OGs are not hard to find. Will prob make too much for what his true worth is.
Hey Matt, if Dumervil doesn't fit in with the Broncos plan to go 3-4, what could they get in a trade from a team that plays 4-3 and needs a good pash rusher?
He is a good pass rusher and I tend to doubt that he can drop into coverage effectively. But, what would you give up for him? Maybe a 3rd? At most I would say. He is still-and always will be-a major liability vs. the run. One trick pony. But pass rushers don't grow on trees either.
If you were the Eagles would you offer a 1st and Lito (or a 4th) for Boldin or a 2nd and 4th (or Lito) for Gonzo? Do you think it matters for the Eagles if the impact receiver they seek is a TE?
Both are not bad moves and I am all in favor of being real aggresive in Philly this off season. I would prefer Boldin though. Celek isn't bad and you could then use a 2nd or 3rd rounder at TE. Deep draft at both postiions, but WRs don't aclimate as quickly. Use Cutis and Jackson as deep threats. Boldin as a go to guy. Celek as a 4th guy. Mix in Westbrook of course. Great set of pass catchers.
Matt, who do you see the Colts drafting this year in the first rd. OL, DT or a WR. Do you see Gonzo staying wide or moving into the slot?
Indy uses first round picks on Peyton's weapons. Wouldn't be shocked if it happened again in a strong WR draft. Still, DT is the bigger need. Ziggy Hood could be a longshot or even Tyson Jackson and moving him inside.
I've read reports that the Cowboys will release S Roy Williams, won't that leave them short at S considering Keith Davis is also a free agent, Who can they bring to fill the void?
Would leave them short, but I am pretty confident that A Henry would be fine at FS. Still, need to add one.
If the Phins sign Jason Brown will they have the highest paid line in history? I believe Long, Smiley, Carey, and Brown will all be paid among the top 5 at their position.
Pretty sure you are right. Think Parcells and company think that this game is won in the trenches?
Would a 3rd rounder be enough to get 85 out of Cincy? I love Chad when he is on his game..or is he to similar to what they have in Philly?
That might be a enough-but who knows with Cincy. They turned down a tremendous deal a year ago from Wash for 85. Still, that would make them very short at WR and with Palmer coming back, 85 could improve. More I think about it, I doubt Cincy pulls the trigger on 85 for a third.
Which available free agents fit the NT spot in a 3-4 defense?
Not a lot. Gravy Jackson comes to mind, as does Tank Johnson. Different type of NTs though. Maybe Colin Cole could do it. Dwayne Robertson has-but did it poorly. Weak crop.
Is the earlier post correct that the Chiefs are switching to a 3-4. They don't have the players for that, do they?
They are and they sure do not
What do the detorit lions need to do in order to become an actual threat in the NFL?
Put together two exceptional off seasons. ATL and Miami both had exceptional off seasons last year and if Det can match that, they will be respectable. That seems a little far fetched though.
Obviously they cannot screw up the first overall pick as well.
Speaking of T Harris, he's been working out with Sapp in the offseason and hopefully stands to benefit from Rod Marinelli coaching him on the sidelines. Do you think he returns to the Terrible Tommie of two years ago?
Wow, Chi REALLY needs that. Used to love that guy. Now-not so much. Those are great signs though.
So, why is it that teams are going to avoid Andre Smith like the plaque for leaving the combine, but will line up for Plaxico's services, despite a long history of problems, team fines and now actually breaking the law? He'll be on his third team (Is this the T.O. script?)
We both know that both players will get plenty of attention. I didn't say teams will avoid A Smith. The guy can play. Potentially great RT or elite OG. Moves bodies. Plenty of teams in this league will gamble on character.
What's the deal with Shaun Rogers? Why is he unhappy in Cleveland? Is it Mangini?
Not sure on the specifics, but it doesn't seem like the best environment in the league right now. Losing year after year. Not a real player-friendly coach now. Could be a miserable year in Clev.
How happy are Ron Brace and those DE/OLB hybrids with all these teams switching to the 3-4?
Tremendous for them. Raji could fall into that category as well and for big dollars. Guys like Canty, Olshansky, A Smith, etc, will be really sought after.
Is there a QB in the Draft who's a better prospect than Matt Cassel?
I am very up and down on Cassel. I give him all the credit in the world for his improvement and he seems smart with enough physical ability to succeed. But he was in a very friendly environment and had zero expectations on his shoulders. Starting to get enamoured with Sanchez and I have always liked him more than Stafford. I think I would take Sanchez of the three if I had my choice.
How happy is Aaron Kampmann with the Packers moving to the 3-4? Hilarious.
He should be furious
Can P. Jerry of Ole Miss, play nose in a 3-4?
No way. Far too light. Upfield penetrator. Not completley sold that he can consistently hold the point at DT in a 4-3. Disruptive though.
What are your thoughts on one of your fellow Scouts Inc brothers getting picked up by the Broncos?
Excited for him. Kidder is a great dude and very good at what he does. I think he has his work cut out for him with that D, but is also sitting pretty with the O. Now part of a real good organization in Denver. Good stuff overall.
Who should the Lions take at #1? If Qb, would you take Stafford or Sanchez? Or would you go with Curry or an Offensive Lineman?
Like I said, I like Sanchez more than Stafford. Curry would probably be my pick though. If Crabtree can light it up between now and then, I would actually consider him as well. Of course I am in the minority there, but he is the best player in the draft and this project will take two years. They really need everything.
Apparently the 49ers will have a lot of cap space, any idea of where they will be spending it?
A RT would go a long way. Maybe they bring in M Smith or Runyan. A WR would be huge as well and I would guess that they look into Housh. Another DB (Greer/McFadden) would be very welcome accross from Clement. They are not hurting for needs either.
Will Deangelo Hall leave the Redskins if they sign Albert Haynesworth?
Not sure how they could afford both. Would assume you are right and then Rogers comes off the trading block.
Come 12:01a.m Friday morning! Do you think we will see alot of signings within a hour or 2?
A few. Surely there are a lot of talks going on right now. Everyone says it isn't happening...but come on.
Do you think the ravens will make a play for any free agents especially at cornerback?
Will be tough. I would guess that CB is addressed in the draft and they will look to sign their own free agents-wisely.
Anquan Boldin ran a 4.7....just sayin
Very good point. Made a first rounder into an early 2nd rounder. Some players don't know how to run the 40. There is a lot of technique to it. Boldin certainly isn't a burner, but he doesn't play like a 4.7 guy either. Watch tape!
Any chance the Bills are targeting Haynesworth?
Would be shocked. Their DTs are not terrible and Stroud is a stud. That is also a franchise that has had a lot of financial problems. Can they swing it?
Do you think the Vikings will re-sign C Matt Birk? Or do you think he will hit the FA market?
Rumor has it that they are close. Real good OC draft, but you don't want to let him get away. A team like Buff or Cincy should be hoping he hits free agency!
I'm with you on Curry, Matty Ice - the only can't miss guy in the draft. Although Jason Smith and Eugene Monroe are pretty close.
I don't dislike those OTs, but I also don't see utter greatness in either. Not O Pace/T Boselli type prospects to me. Some of those elite OTs are just no brainers. My sister can see that they are not like everyone else. Not sure that is the case with any of the OTs in this year's class. Plus, is Backus horrible? He isn't great and I understand the value of a star LT to build around, but with all those holes, I might live with Backus and Cherilus for a year.
The stats bear out that Boldin doesn't perform well against top corners. Should teams be afraid to make him their #1 guy?
No question. Excellent point. I like the guy, but also would really worry about him. Misses a LOT of time due to injuries. Also, I do think he has benefited from Fitz more than Fitz has benefited from Boldin. But, if I am in NYG or Philly's shoes-I am real interested.
Do you think OLB Michael Boley will be a good signing for some team?
We touched on him on today's podcast with JG. Needs a change of scenery but also needs to really improve vs. the run and play tougher. There are a lot of LBs out there though when you add up free agency and the draft this year. Not a tough position to find.
Matt, what do you think of tyler thigpen? do you think there is any chance he could turn out to be a good qb tih a whole off season as a starter? can he learn traditional offense?
I don't think that the Pistol is for real. Can use some aspects of it for sure, but they do need to become more traditional. That will be a transition for sure for TT, but I would probably stick with him for this season to see what you have at least.
Do you think some team will try and convert Ty Law into a safety? It could keep his career alive for another year or 2?
If he would be up for that move, I think it makes some sense. Woodson type of move. He is physical enough. Does he want to learn new tricks though? Old dog for sure.
You said Kampmann is furious with a switch. The dude makes millions. Get over it. Id clean all the toilets in Lambeau Field for what he makes. More proof that pro athletes have no sense of reality.
Really has nothing to do with what we are talking about. I have no idea if he is furitous or not, but the switch isn't beneficial for his skill set. Of course athletes make a ton of money. Get over it. Such is life.
What do you think the Bucs should do at QB: go w/ McCown, Griese, trade for Cassell, or use the 19th pick to get one?
Not a believer at all in McCown. Shocked that they are so excited about him. Freeman makes a lot of sense for TBay. The Bucs have a ton of $$$, so maybe they can eliminate a lot of needs in free agency and then use the draft for the QB of the future. Trade up if Sanchez starts to fall? They really need a WR though and at least one more DLinemen. Another CB wouldn't kill them either.
Why does Jason Brown want guard money from the Ravens when he plays center for the Ravens?
Able to play both and he will be in very much demand. Would assume that he is the highest paid OC in the league within the next few days.
MW - I heard Ralph Wilson called you and offered you the league minimum to start at DE for Buffalo. Barring that, who can they get in there (finally) to get some pressure up front??
I can get after the QB Bro! Well, maybe I should shave a few lbs first. Yeah, DE is a massive need and honestly, I like Buff's D a lot if they can land a pass rusher. Orakpo/E Brown would be ideal, but I doubt they are still there. Have some worris about Maybin.
Who do you think will lead the Browns in '09? Quinn or Anderson? thanks
Quinn. I look at DA as someone who needs the conditions to be perfect. Not an improviser. Not saying Quinn is great, but I like him more of the two. DA is the better deep thrower though.
Do you think if Rey Maualuga is still on the board, the Buffalo Bills should draft him and move POZ to OLB? Perry Fewell hinted to this type of scenerio during the combine!
Not a terrible call and I watched Maualuga live in Mobile and thought that he might be a very good edge pass rusher in time. Could develop that talent in Buff. Buff must find a OC though too and at least one more pass catcher they can trust.
Folks, I am out. I am also subbing for JG on Friday at 4PM. Check me out then and stop back next week and every week here on Wed at noon. Adios and enjoy free agency. Friday's chat could be crazy.
