Chat with Barry Melrose

Barry Melrose
  (3:00 PM)

Rangers fans big night for you guys. Let's see how you respond.

Tim, Guam

Will Tortarella want Avery?

Barry Melrose
  (3:01 PM)

Interesting. He never spoke highly of him when he worked TV in Toronto. So the Avery plans may have changed. I think a lot depends on how they play coming out of the gate. If they lose three or four in a row then maybe it comes up again.

Dwayne (Minneapolis, MN)

Barry, Is the fact that the Sharks haven't played a meaningful game for a while going to hurt them come playoffs?

Barry Melrose
  (3:02 PM)

No I do not think so. There are enough games against Detroit and Chicago that are meaningful. Those games are measuring sticks. I do not think it will be a problem for them down the road.

Adam (Schenectady NY)

Why would New Jersey send Clemmensen down? With Brodeur back, wouldn't they want to possibly trade Kevin Weekes? It seems like Clemmy would be the more significant backup for the playoffs.

Barry Melrose
  (3:04 PM)

I would agree. I think Clemmensen hasd outplayed Weekes. A lot depends on contracts and maybe they are trying to showcase Weekes. But I would expect Clemmensen to be the backup next season and for the remainder of this season once everything sorts itself out.

Mike : Boston, MA

Will the Bruins trade Manny Fernandez and if so who do you think they'll get in return?

Barry Melrose
  (3:05 PM)

I think the last two weeks have shown Boston that they need more offense. I think they will be looking for a guy who can score. But that is a big contract to move, if they want to do it.

randy newport beach ca [via mobile]

hey berry. What do u think of my ducks parting ways with one of their big men

Barry Melrose
  (3:06 PM)

Well it is the year of the cap and even the Ducks have issues. They got a big win last night and kept them in the race. But this is how the world works. They do not want to move Pronger, but it may have to happen.

Wendy (Vestal, NY)

Barry, is Maxim Afinogenov done in Buffalo?

Barry Melrose
  (3:07 PM)

Yes, I think so. I think that he will be moved or not re-signed. He is not playing much now and he was not playing much when healthy. I think this will be his last year as a Sabre.

Ed (Severna Park, MD)

What's the deal with the Caps Barry? I have a feeling they won't go deep into the playoffs because of their defense situation. I think Jose "Three-or-more" is decent, but with the lackluster defensive players I can't see the Caps bringing me a Cup to DC. Poti and Erskine are probably the only two tough, solid defenseman for the Caps. Do you see McPhee making any deadline trades? If so, what?

Barry Melrose
  (3:09 PM)

Yes I do see them making moves. I think they may go after Bouwmeester. Last night they had two or three breakaways at 2-0. Some nights they are not good on defense. You cannot have all that offense and expect great defense as well. You are a pretty lucky guy with that team. I think they will win the East and I expect them to be active at the deadline.

Justin (St Paul)

With the log jam at the bottom of the West how do you like the Wild's chances of making the postseason?

Barry Melrose
  (3:10 PM)

I like their chances because they do not give up much and they can win with one or two goals scored. Their defensive system is very tough to score against. I expect them to make the postseason.

Evan, NYC, NY

With limited cap space, do you see the rangers making any moves?

Barry Melrose
  (3:11 PM)

It will be tough. It will be tough to move guys who make so much money. Any deal they make will be a small one. With the team that they have, you hope that Tortorella gets something out of them the next 20 games.

Nate (Chicago IL)

Should the Hawks trade Nikoli and get a 2nd line center and move versteeg back tot he wing now that huet is playing well?

Barry Melrose
  (3:12 PM)

I think that is something they are looking at doing. But it depends on the deal. If they can get the right player for Khabibulin then yes. I like this team a lot. If they were in the East they would be one of the favorites to make the Cup. We will be hearing from this team in years to come.

Andrew (Toronto)

When was the last time you saw a team collapse as badly as the Canadiens this year?

Barry Melrose
  (3:14 PM)

Well they got a big win last night. They are limping, though. But in the East, if you make it in, you have a chance to win it because there is no dominant team. That is all they are trying to do right now...make it in.

Ryan (Pittsburgh, PA)

Barry, do you think the Penguins will make any trades at the deadline to get a scoring winger for Crosby? Would they give up Jordan Staal for one?

Barry Melrose
  (3:16 PM)

No I do not think they will. Staal has a good contract, is young, yet experienced. I think there are some guys who they would move, but not him. They need to get more out of guys like Satan and Fedetenko. Could they move Whitney? Maybe, but then you have a big hole in defense. I think they are like the Rangers. Their hands are tied and any moves will be small moves.

Will (Detroit, MI)

Mr. Melrose, College graduate looking for a job. Need a new golf caddy this summer?

Barry Melrose
  (3:17 PM)

I have two college graduates lined up for that job. So you need to get in line. But you sound like a smart kid, and I am sure your red Wings will give you something to cheer about while you are looking for a job.

Joe (Dallas)

If, at the trade deadline - Florida is sitting with a group of teams on the playoff bubble, do you see them trading Bouwmeester?

Barry Melrose
  (3:18 PM)

I think they have to. I just do not think they can let him leave for nothing. Atlanta got four players for Hossa. I just think they need to get something.

Don from Kentucky [via mobile]

Are the wings good enough with osgood or do you see them making a move

Barry Melrose
  (3:19 PM)

Do not forget Osgood won it all last year and we were asking the same questions heading into the playoffs. Are they going to pick up Khabibulin? They would have to give up a lot, and Chicago would not want to let him go in the West. I see Osgood staying.

vince dallas, tx [via mobile]

should the stars try to add help before the deadline ends or just wait until they get healthy?

Barry Melrose
  (3:21 PM)

They cannot afford to lose five or six games in a row waiting for guys to get healthy. So I see them trying to make some moves to ensure they make the playoffs.

Matt (Denver)

Hi Barry, I was wondering what your reaction is to Bucci's claim that Malkin has the potential to be better than Ovie and Sid both. Also, please send help to my Avs. Anything will help. Magic mullet potion maybe? Thanks!

Barry Melrose
  (3:23 PM)

Tough loss for the Avs against Atlanta, cannot lose that game. But Bucci comes out with a lot of stuff that no one can understand. Malkin is a good player, but I think if you asked 30 GMs who you would want between the three, I think Malkin's name would come in third almost every time. Bucci's voice is the lone one in the wilderness on that one, and that's okay.

Larry (Boston)

Do you think that with the financial situation the Phoenix Coyotes are in that they move back to Winnipeg?

Barry Melrose
  (3:24 PM)

No. I think the NHL will keep them in Phoenix. There should be more teams in Canada, but Gary has made it clear he wants to expand to new areas. I think Gary would like to keep them in Arizona, a major market with a great arena.

Joe (Frostburg MD)

Do you see the caps moving nylander at the deadline or any other role players? If so who?

Barry Melrose
  (3:26 PM)

I could see them moving him for an elite defeseman. He is not a very critical player on the team right now, although he is very talented. They need defense more than forwards so yes, maybe.

Do you think the Flyers should make any moves? Also do you think they should think about trading Daniel Briere?

Barry Melrose
  (3:27 PM)

Briere is damaged goods right now; he has been hurt and has a huge deal and they are against the cap. I am not sure they will be able to do anything major.

Redford Michigan

do u think that the Detroit Redwings are still top dog in the NHL?

Barry Melrose
  (3:28 PM)

I think they are. They played SJ a few times and have a winning record, Hossa is having a great year, and they have won a Cup with Osgood, and so I still think the road to the Cup goes through Detroit.

Ron from Columbus,OH [via mobile]

Barry, with the Blue Jackets making their first ever playoff push in franchise history, can they make the playoffs and are they buyers at the trade deadline and can they add to help them?

Barry Melrose
  (3:30 PM)

I think they will be buyers. This team needs to make the playoffs. They are looking for the same thing everyone else is looking for. But they do have young players to move and they do have cap room. So I think they will be aggressive at the deadline.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Bergeron has been really good since returning. It seems like he's back to being the Bruins 2nd best forward. Agree?

Barry Melrose
  (3:31 PM)

Well he scored a great goal last night and held the puck a lot. Great news for Boston and it may change their outlook at the deadline.

Sharky (San Jose, CA)

The sharks are the best team in the NHL as of points to number of games, they have the best record and they haven't been under the five spot on the power rankings. Why are the Sharks the underdogs in tonights match against the Detroit Red Wings?

Barry Melrose
  (3:33 PM)

I do not think there is anything wrong being the underdog. It gives you motivation. And it is because Detroit won the Cup and they added Hossa, who is playing great. So those are the reasons and again it is not a bad thing being the underdog.

Barry Melrose
  (3:37 PM)

Not a better team to start against than Toronto for you Rangers fans. This should be a lay up for your team.

Barry Melrose
  (3:38 PM)

See you next week.
