Hi folks, let's get rolling as free agency ticks closer.
Is there any word on LT? When are we likely to find out if he will remain a Charger for the 09 season?
No word yet, Larry. Chargers general manager A.J. Smith is speaking to the media in less than an hour. Unless there is major progress, the word is the LT situation may need a litlte more time to develop.
what is the big word on Ray lewis where is he likely to end up
This may be resolved in a day or two. Look at Dallas and the Jets right now.
Do you think releasing Derrick Brooks was the right move for Tampa Bay?
No, I don't. It is always sad when a legend gets cut when he can still play. I think he should have been allowed to stay,
Hey Bill! Seeing as though you have experience covering the Packers, do you see Ted Thompson breaking out of his shell and actually spending some of that cap space on signing a free agent or two? If so, who do you think they may target?
Well, Zach, I was in Green Bay 10 years ago (and I'm still chilly by the way) so I'm not on the pulse there. But the Packers need defnesive help so Ted may want to change coruse and spend a little money.
Will I miss Josh McDaniels in the o9 season?
Probably a little, sure.
How about Ray Lewis to Denver? Has played under Nolan and Denver needs not only a run stuffing ILB but a LEADER. They also need 3-4 experience. Isn't he a perfect stopgap for the Broncos?
I see where you are going and it makes sense, but I'm hearing that may not happen.
who are the chiefs taking 3rd?
It's early but I think they like Aaron Curry, the linebacker from Wake Forest. he had a great combine and, most importantly, he was producitve last season.
I know that the Raiders are shopping Derrick Burgess. What do you think they will get in return for Burgess?
A mid-rounder, I'd say. They won't get more.
I know Haynesworth or Peppers would be a reach, but who do you see Denver pursuing?
Think lesser names but guys who can fill the starting lineup. That may be the prudent way to go. Denver needs a lot of help. One big name isn't going to fix the porblem.
Do you see Chris Canty ending up somewhere in the AFC West? If so, who has a better shot at landing him? The Broncos or Chargers?
Who know what? I'm keeping my eye on that one. I think he could help both teams, yes. Maybe Kansas CIty as well.
Are the eagles going to make a serious push for a #1 reciever like they did last year or are they afraid it will look like they caved to McNabb's will?
I would think the Eagles are going to make a push for T.J. very early in free agency.
Any more news on the Javon Walker situation in Oakland, do you think he will take a big enough pay cut to stay with the team?
The word last night was that Walker was leaning toward taking a big pay cut because he knows he won't get any more money on the open market.
Do you think the Raiders will go after Nate Washington?
He could be a good fit. He won't be pricey and he coudl help. Expect Oakland to try to re-sign Drew Carter as well.
Never mind about Niswanger - The Chiefs just extended a 1.5 million tender, 2nd round compensation to him. (just reported by KC Star.)
I don't see anyone matching that deal. He should stick for the year.
the chargers never sign big FA or anyone really for that matter.... will this change this year?
Well, I think their goal will continue to be keeping their own and working on the deals of LT, Rivers and Gates. But maybe one or two free agents could be on the way. But, as usual, don't expect a bombshell
Could the Chiefs try and get Vick. If not where do you see him going.
I don't see it. I don't think Vick will play again until 2010.
Isn't America great?! I have convinced multiple teams to offer me upwards of $15 million per year and maybe even $100 million total! And all I had to do was play well for one year!
What a country.
Do you see the chiefs going after Cato June?
Sure, I can. The Chiefs need some help at linebacker and June could be a possibility.
Do you see Parcells and Co making a big splash in free agency or will they build through the draft?
They already started by securing safety Gibril WIlson, who was cut by Oakland last week.
what was the size of drew carters deal when he signed with oakland?
It was very modest. Not like the other disasters of 2008 in Oakland.
where you from. i love all this kc love. how do you think they will do this year?
I'm the AFC West guy, bro. I have to take care of my people.
i dont get it, none of my questions are showing up on the post mabye this one will work, what free agent OL do you see possibly going to Oakland?
Patience Patrick, I just answered your question.
Are there any FAs you think should have a "Buyer Beware!" label on them?
Sure, let's start with Haynesworth. He has been known in the past for not giving his full effort. Will he take a dive after a huge pay day? It's a fair question.
Will McNabb leave if the eagles cant sign a #1 receiver like Houshmanzadeh?
I think it may be a little game of chicken. Anyway, the Eagles control him. They have the ultimate leverage in this one.
Do you see KC or Denver trying to land Duce.
Maybe not right away. There could be other options.
sorry about that, just didnt know if it was my computer or not. Thanks anyways.
Anytime, thanks for participating.
Alot of ppl are saying that Denver should target another receiver through free agency. you think its necesary Bill? and who?
I'm not so sure. I think they are OK. But I think Marvin Harrison could be a nice fit there as a rotation option.
you are my new favorite espn person.
I'll take it.
Back to the Gibril Wilson signing with Miami... what is your opinion of the signing and why did Oakland cut him.
I think he is a solid player. He is not great because he struggles in coverage but he is a tackle machine. I think Oakland should have found a way to keep him. It was a bad move.
Who will the Steelers pick up in free agency and will they pick up Jeff Saturday?
Saturday is definitely a guy for Steelers fans to keep an eye on. I think the team will target offensive linemen.
Bill, it seems like Oakland is moving towards a youth movement. Does this set them back again or are you confident that the younger players will step up for them?
I think it is a forced movement. Remember, Oakland made all of those big signings last year because they wanted it to work. Now it's a youth movement because the other moves didn't work.
Bill, thanks for the great chats, and for your time here in Denver! I've got Denver's fool prrof 2009 offseason plan for a better Def: Sign FA's: Canty/J. Sanders/Grady Jackson/B Mcfadden/A Smith (DE ARI) Draft: Maualuga/Brace and K Ellinsworth What do you think?
I think it's a nice start and I think you are really into this stuff. Good work and thanks for the kind words.
HEY BILL. ROMEO CRENNEL, ERIC MANGINI, CHARLIE WEIS... NOT THAT LUCRATIVE OF A LIST. DO YOU THINK JOSH MCDANIEL WILL SUFFER THE SAME FATE OR SUCCEED IN DENVER?
It's a very fair question. We will see. I'll tell you this: If McDaniels fails, other Belichick assistants may have trouble getting head coaching gigs.
With the switch to a 3-4 in Green Bay next year, they need a giant to fill the middle at DT. Who's out there that fits that bill?
Maybe Grady Jackson in free agency or B.J. Raji in the draft.
Will the Pats be the best team in the AFC this year?
I like their chances with a healthy Brady. Who wouldn't?
Hey Bill, who do you see Igor Olshanski going to?
Denver maybe? I don't think he is returning to San Diego.
What are the chances of bart scott coming to KC?
He may sign with Baltimore before the party starts. If not, I think there are other options for Scott before he'd talk to Kansas City.
I am not trying to be rude, but my questions never get answered on this chat!
Ok, what's your question?
Bill, back to the Oakland youth movement, I've read in different places that the Raiders have some young propects that may turn into legit starters, a DT and S off the top of my head. Does this sound reasonable to you? It seems with the fiasco that was last and this year's free agency, they may have to lean on them quite a bit.
Here's a few guys Oakland hopes develops this year: Defensive end Trevor Scott and receivers Chaz Schilens and Johnnie Lee Higgins.
Is Darren McFaden going to have a break out year?
I thought he was going to be great as a rookie. He needs to stay healthy. His rookie season was really altered by injuries.
Do you think Coles could make a return to FL where he played his college ball and sign with Tampa? they need some WR.
Or Miami maybe.
the raiders should get jason brown what do u think and how much salary cap room do the raiders have
Brown will get bigger offers than what Oakland can do, I think.
Great chat Bill! Do you think Mangini and Kokinis will clean house and make a lot of changes to the Browns roster or stick mostly with what they have for now? There is already reports the best defensive player (Rogers) from last year wants off the team.
I am very interested in seeing what happens with Rogers. The Browns could get something decent in return for him in a trade.
Do you see the Eagles making a move for Marvin Harrison?
It sure makes sense to me.
Well, my question is regarding the new leadership in Denver. It seems to me that all I keep hearing out of xander's mouth and others is about saving money and how one person shouldn't count that much against the cap. I am a die hard bronco fan and to me that sounds like a front office that doesn't want to win. I understand we have several areas, but please at least one big free agent on the "D" side of the ball needs to be signed!
I think the Broncos will spend but don't expect any huge names.
What do you think the steelers need to target the most during the draft?
Will the Giants resign Derrick Ward?
I think he will go elsewhere, especially after the Jacobs' deal.
Is Brandon Marshall a future TO off field wise? should The broncos trade him, or sign him to a 10 year 65 million dollar contract that he has asked for
Brandon is trying very hard to do the right thing off the field after a tough 2007 and ealry 2008.
can the Denver broncos get either bart scott or ray lewis?
Maybe but I don't think it is likely.
what are the chances of the Browns landing Derrek Ward
I think the Browns are certainly in the mix, yes.
whos gonna be rb in kc this year. lj gonna get traded?
I think he gets cut soon.
Can Miami afford, Jason Brown, Coles, and Canty or Igor? If so, they might be able to challenge NE next year.
The Dolphins will be busy. They already got Wilson. I think Miami, if Pennington can be the same QB he was in 2008, will be dangerous again.
Wow...I gotta say, after seeing what the Raiders and Carolina did in terms of messing up the overall salary structure of the league with Asomugha and Gross, if I had a receiver as good as Marshall who ONLY wanted 65 million for the next 10 years, I'd take him up on it.
Many in the league are not happy with that Nnamdi deal.
OK, folks, great hour. Enjoy the free agency madness. BW.
