Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (2:57 PM)

Hi folks, how's everyone? Thanks for coming, let's dive right in...

Dustin, Stanford CA

Hi Paul, I have been reading your blog for a long time now. It keeps me sane while at work. I was wondering what the Titans are expecting from the younger members of their defensive line (Jones, Ford, Ball, Hayes)? Are they comfortable this 4 can fill the void if Hanyesworth departs? Are any primed to break out?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:00 PM)

I think if Haynesworth is gone, and I've maintained all along he will be, they have enough to still be good to very good up front. All those guys will have opportunity to do more and are on a good curve...

Eric (Eden Prairie, MN)

I'm a vikings fan (!Skol Viks!) and I'm a little curious about this Rosenfels trade rumor. What do the fans in Houston generally think of him? Is he liked or disliked?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:01 PM)

It's not a rumor, it'll be official tomorrow. He's better than what you've got, in my opinion. Make some bad decisions last year, but has been a capable player. And will be a great locker room guy...

Josh (Charlotte, NC)

Frequent chatter here! Do you think there is any chance that "Housh" may take a small deal and join the Colts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

I don't. Top three factors in free agency in almost every instance, no matter what anybody says: Money, money and money...

Chuck (Austin, Texas)

Matt Schaub is always injured. That being said who will the Texans go after for a backup quarterback?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

Well Chris Simms is tight with Kyle Shanahan. That would be my first thought. But other teams may offer Simms a shot to start. Texans would then have to wade through the pool of veteran backups...

JB (TX)

Housekeeping questions: If free agency starts at midnight how did the Dolphins sign Girbil Wilson already? Also, did the Titans not release anyone for cap purposes?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

He was cut by Oakland. If you're cut, you are on the market, you don't have to wait on a contract to expire... The Titans have around $25 million in cap room, no cuts needed...

Josh (Charlotte)

Paul, do you think I'm silly for saying I'd rather the Colts pick up Hakeem Nicks than Percy Harvin? It seems he's a bigger, more physical guy than Harvin. Wayne already beats DBs deep. We need a jump ball guy.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

I'm with you. I don't know that it should be Nicks, but I do think it shouldn't be Harvin. They need a crisp route runner, and Harvin ran to spots more than anything. Take a look a blog entry I did from combine on that...

Chris (Jax)

Do you see the Jags taking a QB in the draft this year? If so who, when and where in the draft?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

Not early. They have a lot of needs, and only six picks, I believe. The team believes with better protection and better weapons, David Garrard will be fine. So look for OL and WRs....

Peter (Nashville)

I know you aren't high on the Titans taking a wide receiver in the draft, but Reifeldt has said they are looking to upgrade at the position. Don't you think Heyward-Bey would be the perfect fit? Fast, big, decent blocker. Sounds good to me.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

Sounds good to me too. He was impressive when we talked to him. A lot of those guys after Crabtree and Maclin look intriguing and like potential fits. But Fisher's not big on rookie receivers and why bet against a 10-year trend? They are 'looking' to 'upgrade' everywhere. Don't read too much into what they say about one spot...

Andrew (Nashville)

Assuming the Titans don't sign Albert, are they going to spend their leftover cap money, or just use it to line Bud Adams' pockets?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

They'll still spend. But it will be on several guys, not one huge one and they won't necessarily use it all. I was going to say that room isn't as much as we may think when you consider tenders, rookies, etc. But they have no restricted free agents, so those tender offers are not part of things....

charles in Nashville

hey Paulie would scaife had been covetted if he'd have hit the market? was the tag a good move?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

I think it was a good move. UFA TE class is weak. And based on what Hartsock got in ATL last year, better safe than sorry. Against $123 or $127 million that franchise number doesn't seem so big....

Ed (Muncie, IN)

Do you think that Derrick Brooks (tampa bay) would be a good fit for the colts. with his experience and class on and off the field i think he would fit perfectly, but what do you think the chances of the colts picking him up for 2 years to help teach the young players how to do it on and off the field?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

Interesting. But they don't believe in investing a heck of a lot in linebackers or in bringing in age, so I'd doubt it...

Charles (Jax)

Can Garrard get it done? Do Jags need to take a qb if Stafford or Sanchez fall to 8? I'd prefer they try and trade back.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

I'm not sold on Garrard, but I am sold on them being sold. He's only one year into the giant new deal...

Josh (Charlotte)

Do you think the Colts pick up a DT early in the draft or continue with the trend of after draft free agents?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

Later picks and undrafted FAs they can find guys that will work for them there and are bigger. If Jerry fell to them, I could see it. But I think he'll be long gone and I think Polian thinks so too...

Chuck, Miami

The Jets are in need of a big-time WR. What do you think their best possibilty is?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

I don't know that he's 'big-time,' but Coles to Miami makes a lot of sense...

Chris (Columbus OH)

if haynesworth leaves, do you see the titans going after a DT in free agency, if so which one?

fresh prince (bel air)

Do Jgas bring Meester back at center? Is Saturday an upgrade or are they the same guy?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

Saturday's an upgrade, but I doubt they chase him. At the right price and without a guarantee he's the starter, they'd like to have Meester back. There are lots of FA centers and a decent crop of prospects too, so I think Jags have the leverage...

Brent (Nashville, TN)

Hi Paul. I heard you this morning on 104.5 The Zone. Since it doesn't appear the Titans are gonna resign Haynesworth, what free agents do you see the Titans going after? Any chance the Titans would sign Ray Lewis or Jonanthan Vilma to upgrade at MLB?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

The Titans MLB is a situational player -- 40 percent of the snaps. They play nickel more often than not with a fifth DB. They're not bringing in the best MLB of his generation....

barney (moe's tavern)

With Taylor, Mike Peterson, and probably Spicer gone, that's 3 of the Jags 6 captains from last season. Where is the leadership on this team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

A good question and a huge issue. They need some form the outside, and they need a guy like Rashean Mathis to take some on....

Josh (Charlotte)

I saw where you said the Colts have the negotiating power with Saturday. Do you still believe that way after the Ravens have chosen not to resign their center? Any chance the Colts up their offer to Jeff now that the salary cap has gone up $4m?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

If the Ravens don't sign Jason Brown, it gives the Colts MORE leverage, not less. There is another quality center on the market to take away opportunity from Saturday...

Paul (Nashville, TN)

Knowing how the Titans like to bring back former players do you see a chance that Drew Bennett might come back to Nashville. Then all we would need is Mason to get cut from the Ravens and Eddie, Steve, & Frank to come out retirement and we might have a chance.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

Before Kearse and McCareins, the Titans never brought back former players unless you are talking Neil O'Donnell in an emergency. Possible on Bennett. But if that's their upgrade over McCareins, they'll get a earful from me...

Gary G

Paul, we heard in Nashville that the Titans may be interested in Nate Washington. Do you think that's a real possibility and if not, who of the WR free agents would be a good fit?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

I think Washington's got to be someone they consider based on what's out there...

Jimi (Indiana)

Why did the Colts let Dom Rhodes test free agency? He's the best option they have at RB.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

Because they presume he won't find what he's looking for and will still be back. Just because a guy gets to the market doesn't mean he's gone...

Bluto (College)

Will there be homes for all these star veterans on the market (Taylor, Harrision, D. Brooks, McAllister,Dunn, etc..) or will a couple have to retire?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

I think there will be homes for most of them if they want to play and will take a cheap deal loaded with incentives. I think some of them will maybe not resurface until camp...

Aaron (Nashville)

Do you think the Titans cut Chris Henry any time soon? With Rafael Little adding even more competition, he's got to be hanging on by a thread, right??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

They save no money by cutting Henry now as opposed to the end of camp. So he won't be gone until late August when Little has beaten him out...

John (Nashville)

Paul, the Titans cap number of +25 mil is how accurate? Does it include the LTBE and the 127 mil cap ceiling?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

Not sure about incentives, but that was before the $4M increase, so it's more like $29...

Gary G

PK, what's your gut feeling about Haynesworth returning to the Titans

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

Not happening...

Jim PA

Do you think the Eagles will make a big name signing in any position?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

I wouldn't be surprised if they got Housh with an early charge...

JB (TX)

I'm a VY fan, but I understand for '09 Kerry likely gives us the best chance to win. That being said, is Kerry looking at any real offers out there on the open market? I can't imagine anyone breaking the back for a 36 yr old, or him seeing a situation (Jets, Niners) better for him than the Titans.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Breaking the bank? No. Setting the market? Maybe. I think the Titans are almost hoping he gets an offer, based on how they said they'd be willing to match...

John (ny)

Do you see the Jags making a play for L coles?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

Maybe. They sure need playmakers. He's not a burner anymore, but better than a lot of what they have. But I'll be surprised if he doesn't go to Miami. And he could be too pricey for Jax....

Eric (Eden Prairie, MN)

What's Payton Mannings contract status? Is there any chance he'll be outa Indianapolis in the next 2-4 years? Are the colts on a downslope?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

Why in the world would he be gone? They looked pretty good late in the season to me, I think they vie for the division crown for at least a few more years....

JB (TX)

So you don't think Big Al is coming back. Does he end up in Washington, Tampa, or somewhere else?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

Yes, Washington or Tampa or somewhere else. Sorry. Teams aren't running out to tell us who they're going to chase...

Steve ( Houston)

Whats Houston going to do in FA or in the Draft?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

Bolster the D, first and foremost, with a DE opposite Mario, a CB opposite Dunta, and a DT to go with Okoye...

Tyler (Murfreesboro, TN)

I know that agents and owners can pull the "Hypothetical" card, but if Big Al signs immediately with the Redskins, would the Titans have a case against Snyder and Speck for tampering?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

It happens all the time though. Yeah, it could slow down a deal with Washington for appearance's sake. But not if Tampa or someone else is going to edge in...

Matt (Ham Lake, MN)

Does sage rosenfels actually have a shot at being minnesota's starting qb next year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

I said already I think he's better than the two current candidates...

John (ny)

Paul, Why are you a Jaguar hater?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

I'm not. But they were by far the worst team in the division and many don't like to hear that said out loud...

Mad Mike (Houston)

Paul: I would like to see the Texans bring in Warrick Dunn on a 1 yr. deal to spell Slaton. I think he would be good for 100-125 carries and about 30-40 catches. Great pick up IMHO, thanks....MM

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

I like the idea Mad Mike. Make it happen...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

1) Polian 2) Reinfeldt Smith and Smith -- not enough of a body of work to judge...

Bongo Nashville TN

Paul tell us why TN let Mookie go over the turd WR's if they knew 92 was history?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

I can't explain it, they won't answer it except to say Amon Gordon was as good as Mookie, which I'm not buying...

Ed (Muncie, IN)

greg jones (number two behind jones-drew)...under rated with great potential, or just a filler till they get something better?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

I'm not sure. But I do think they need someone with a different style than MJD and I don't know that Jones fits the bill....

Ryan, TN

So if AH actually signs w/ the skins, what's the chance of the Titans filing tampering charges and what would be the possible ramifications the league decides it actually happened?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

I don't think the Titans would pursue, but I will ask if it unfolds like that...

Ray (Frankfurt, IN)

Will the Colts D be better under Larry Coyer?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

Yes. I think the Colts D will be less predictable with coverages and blitzes and use more of each, provided their personnel can handle such expansion, and I believe it will be able...

timmy (sp, co)

What do you know about Mel Tucker, the Jags new DC?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

Younger than me. Recent background in a 3-4. Likely to have Del Rio be hands on with D in such a big year job security wise...

John (Nashville)

Paul, are there any FA's you expect the Titans to go after?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

I'd be guessing like everyone else. They've not tipped their hand...

Shane (Los Angeles, CA)

If AH signes with the Skins (or any other team outside their division) it will be a huge blessing for the Titans. The guy cant stay healthy, plays only 2/3rds of the snaps, and only played at an All-World level during his two contract years. Good riddance. AH will be the most overhyped, overrated, and overpaid FA in this years FA class. That being said, with or without him, the Titans will take a considerable drop from their performance last year. I see the Colts and the Texans being much better. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

If he goes somewhere else and underperforms, it doesn't mean he wouldn't have played well here. With 65 percent of the snaps and 14 games, he was awfully influential... I can see why they won't match the numbers we are hearing now. I still have trouble with their justification of handing away the second franchise tag so easily...

dave ill

why wont the colts make a play for tj houch

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

They don't have that kind of money and they don't believe in free agency...

Ed (Muncie, IN)

Washington is my number two team, behind the 2010 World CHAMPION COLTS!!!! I would love to see them get haynsworth. I havent heard anything about this supposed mis-dealings with him, can you fill me in?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

They can't afford him and Caldwell answered a question about him at the combine by saying they don't live in fantasy land...

Adam, New York

Why is Gibril Wilson's signing with the dolphins a day before free agency not considered tampering? Aren't teams not allowed to negotiate with players before midngiht tonight? Thanks for taking my question.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

He was cut. He wasn't waiting on a contract to expire...

Jordan ( New Rochelle,NY)

The jets are in need of a qb, and are in a "win-now" situation after a successful free agency last year. What's their best option for the upcoming year, drafting sanchez or freeman,or signing someone to a one yr deal?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

At some point, they have to find a long-term solution. Who's won big by by looking to available, veteran QBs on one-year deals?

Terence (Nashville)

Of the Titans' DBs Carr, King and Fuller, what are your feelings on who will stay and who will go?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

King is least important and cheapest. Carr isn't going to get starting CB money. Fuller is very important. But not knowing who else is interested in them and at what price, I can answer...

Weslaco, Tx

Whats the real reason keeping Kerry Collins and the Titans apart, do you really think he is worth Kurt Warner money?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

He wants more than they are willing to pay. That's the real reason keeping any player and team apart right now. Warner could help set up some context. He's not saying he's worth KW money. But once he knows what KW is worth, he can say I'm worth 2/3 or that or however much....

Malcolm Lexington

With Jim Schwartz in Detroit will the Lions steal fat Albert away from my Titans?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

Doubt it. Schwartz and Albert aren't especially tight and Albert will have warmer options...

Aaron (Nashville)

This has been overlooked quite a bit - but any chance Albert sees any punishment from Goodell for his accident on I-65? A felony speeding offense that puts a guy on a walker/wheel chair is a big deal. Could he be benefitting from the little to no TV coverage this accident received?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

Goodell sees all under the conduct policy, he'll know all the details...

Jarrod (Tempe, AZ)

Why wouldn't the Titans make a serious offer to Kurt Warner? He's loads better than Collins imo.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

They don't have a pass-based offense and he would go to waste. They aren't in the market for a guy who can throw to great receivers, as they have none of those...

Mr. Sensation (Omaha Springs, Eygpt)

Would you give up the 30th pick in the draft for Matt Cassell?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

Depends on my level of need at QB. But I expect he will cost more than that. I am not sure he's a sure thing, particularly in a different environment, if that's what you are asking... I actually covered him when he played in the Little League World Series...

Mad Mike (Houston)

Paul: Specualtion around here that the Texans have Jacoby Jones on the block for a fourth round pick. They are tired of the muffs and his immaturity. Do you see they can get a 4 for him, not likely in my book. Thanks.......MM

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

I could find a guy to muff punts for far less than that...

BrianNY

PK - Marvin Harrison going to Philly?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

Seems a logical marriage, but I don't think it happens for a good while...

Matt (Columbus)

What do you think of Polian's statement that the Colts haven't ruled out bringing Marvin back? I'm all for it at the right price.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

Everybody says that at any amicable parting. It's always a long shot....

Ryan, TN

There were rumors at the trade deadline that the Titans had a trade set for Tony Gonzalez (was even supposedly reported by Schefter on NFLN that it was done) but it fell through b/c KC up'd their price at the last second. So if that's true... they were trying to upgrade on Scaife during the season but then tag him to work out a long term deal? Seems like a 180. What are the odds we see a sign and trade w/ Scaife?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

I never heard anything credible about Gonzalez to the Titans. 'Supposedly reported' by NFL Network included...

Mike (Philly)

Which DEs should Houston be targeting to bookend with Mario?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

Boy does Orakpo look impressive. Probably won't last to 15...

Weslaco, Tx

How serious are the Titans about Vince Young? If Kerry doesn't sign, are they willing to go with Vince or will they bring in another vet QB to compete.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

There is no scenario where VY is anointed the starter at this stage without competition...

David (Jacksonville, FL)

How do you think Jones-Drew will in a starting role. Should they get a slasher-type to complement him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

I think he benefited a great deal from working with Fred and they'd be wise to find a similar compliment, a creative fast guy....

Josh (Charlotte)

Any chance that the Colts sign Carr? He'd be a nice return man and fill in CB in passing situations.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

He'd be a nice add, and it could be nice to take away from the Titans. But if he's looking for starter money, he's certainly not getting it there...

BrianNY

PK - How does Gage and Jones on the outside, and Hawkins in the slot sound?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

They can do better. Jones can't necessarily handle a full load. He was better with No. 3 snaps, even if they came outside..

mike (dallas)

is deanglo hall too expensive for the texans?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

Never mind the price, you want that guy in your locker room?

Jason Chicago

Do u think the titans would trade a 2nd round pick for Shaun Rodgers he would be an acceptable replacement for albert h

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

They are not in a situation where they have to go get someone to replace Albert. Jason Jones is his replacement. Lots of upside and a good player, though unlikely to be dominant like AH, at least not yet...

JB (TX)

Why are teams (Colts, Bucs) getting away from the Cover 2? Didn't it win 2 super bowls this decade?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:04 PM)

People have gotten better at attacking it. But the main answer is that Kiffin and Dungy are gone. Colts will still play it plenty, they are built for it...

Cay (DC)

Hey paul do you think the titans will give Lendale White another contract if he has a similar season as 08

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

Depends on the price. If he's looking to hit the jackpot, and I suspect he will be, then no...

Randy, NJ

Can Joe Addai handle the Colts running game by himself, or should they think of drafting another RB in the 2nd-3rd round? And any chance you don't answer my question with an ellipses...?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:07 PM)

No one can handle a run game by himself anymore. They need Rhodes back and Hart to help out, ideally. Please note end of that. And of this.

JB (TX)

Texans question: why exactly is Dunta disgruntled? Didn't he see this as a possibility, especially only a year of that devastating injury?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:07 PM)

They told him at one point they wouldn't franchise him. So he felt they lied. And he gets no money under that tag until Week One...

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:09 PM)

Always a fast hour, folks. Thanks for coming. I hope your team signs someone wonderful in the first five minutes. I'll be ready to comment. Chat's back to weekly at this time. Spread the word and please come back...
