Chat with David Thorpe

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

Hi everyone. Lots to hit on today. The playoffs are 6 weeks a way and the best have gotten better. " I bet we've eaten every part of a pig...from the rooter to the tooter".

John ( PHX,AZ)

Does Swift help the SUNs at all?

David Thorpe
  (12:01 PM)

As my brother Mike once famously said, "negative".

Mitch (SLC)

ThorpeNation! What are your thoughts on the recent play of Ronnie Brewer? How good can he be?

David Thorpe
  (12:02 PM)

Really good. Especially on that team, in that offense. He's like a power forward/guard.

Paul (cleveland)

Thorpe, I've asked you on a few occassions about Daniel Gibson before. I ask you now, what is going on with him? I would've bet my lunch AND yours last year that this would have been a breakout year. He looks unwilling to shoot or drive. Thoughts?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

"Mental is to physical as 4 is to one". Bobby Knight

Cosmo (Anytown, USA)

Do you teach a 'charge-taking' technique? If so, do you encourage embellishing contact?

David Thorpe
  (12:03 PM)

Yes, Butt down. hands out. Chest out, but stay balanced. Explode away once contact is made.

Rocko (NY)

Can you explain why Del Negro's offense doesn't involve the abilities of Derrick Rose?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

On the contrary, it's all built for Rose.

Chad (Culver City, CA)

Thorpe, help me! I'm shooting the half court shot at half time at the Lakers game this Friday. Any tips?

David Thorpe
  (12:04 PM)

Shoot from the exact middle of the court. And do not leave it short.

Tyler (St. Louis, Mo.)

Is Cleveland the city that least deserves a championship? I.e. low class fans.

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

How would you be acting, at this time of year, if you lived there? I think they are like everybody else.

Jordan (Toronto)

Is Bosh worth a max contract? He is not an MVP caliber player like Wade and Lebron.

David Thorpe
  (12:05 PM)

Every penny.

Matt (IA)

Boomerang? What is the big difference for the Cavs between this year and last?

David Thorpe
  (12:06 PM)

Bingo. Nicely done. Great Thanksgiving scene. They've added a big time shooter-scorer. "The trick is, you got to coordinate".

Will J (Portland, OR)

So how would you rank these guys (1 being guy you would start a franchise with)? Rose, D-Williams, B-Roy, Bosh, Carmelo

David Thorpe
  (12:07 PM)

1. Bosh 2. Williams 3. Roy 4. Rose 5. Melo

Jimmy (Houston,TX)

Who's the best shot blocker you've worked with? And do see any current NBA players ending up with more career blocks than Olajuwon?

David Thorpe
  (12:08 PM)

a French kid named Moussa Badiane. Broke Kenyon Martin's shot block record. And no, I do not.

Chris (NY, NY)

Stephan Curry is knocked for his lack of athleticism but is he any less athletic than guys like Mike Bibby, Mark Jackson, Steve Nash or Mark Price who were all excellent PGs.

David Thorpe
  (12:09 PM)

I think he's more athletic than them.

Paul (Cleveland)

Let me rephrase my question: As a talent developer yourself, does Gibson have a shot at regaining the mental composure he seemed to have as a rookie and sophomore? If so, what will it take? (coaching, himself, practice, etc)

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

All of the above. I'd have to study his misses to see what the problem is.

Mike (CA)

David, if you owned/managed the Warriors, and could keep either Anthony Randaolph OR Brandan Wright (but not both), who stays?

David Thorpe
  (12:10 PM)

Probably Wright, but it's a coin flip.

Santana (North Carolina)

Does Gerald Henderson have the potential to be a Ron Artest player in the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:11 PM)

In that they both have ears, yes.

Ed (southern Virginia)

Hi, Coach Thorpe! I know that you're more a fan of the fundamentals than gimmicks, but humor me for a moment. What are your 5 all-time favorite 'signature' moves? Thanks!

David Thorpe
  (12:12 PM)

I love gimmicks that work. I'll try to throw out some "moves": 5. McAdoo's turnaround J 4. Any shot from Silk 3. Jamison's runners 2. Magic's late career hook 1. Iceman fingerrolls

Jamal (Providence, RI)

Thorpedo!!!! having played basketball all my life and been to numerous camps they stress catching the ball in a triple threat position...is this lost in the NBA, it can be so effective! my favorite player Durant always catches the ball and puts it over his head...isn't that very useless??

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

it's a bad habit, yes.

Jon (Mad-town)

D-Wade looks like he's fully returned to form. Seeing as he had the most dominant performance in NBA Post-Season history a few years back can you see the Heat as a sleeper pick for NBA Champs?

David Thorpe
  (12:13 PM)

No. They had veterans at every important position, 2 deep.

Matt (DC)

Have you seen Jordan Hill from Arizona play? There is a lot to like about his game and potential.

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

Just a little, and yes there is.

kevin (sactown)

What do you think of Petrie, does he keep making mistep after mistep or do some of his moves makes sense? What is best case scenario of us next season?

David Thorpe
  (12:14 PM)

i like what they are doing now, paring salary and guys that will not be part of the solution.

Jon (Mad-town)

Which team is going to win the steal of the 09 FA market in Ben Gordon?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

I don't know, but he's glorious to watch with the ball, as long as he does not pass.

Rich (NJ)

David, who do you like for Most Improved? Devin Harris has to be in the discussion, right?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Probably the leader, no?

Ed (MD)

who is the most under-rated player in the NBA? Recent reports may suggest shane battier. Who else is on your list?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Joakim Noah. Felton is coming along.

adam [via mobile]

who's the most offensively skilled center in the game today?

David Thorpe
  (12:15 PM)

Yao.

Coop (Orlando)

who is your favorite player in the nba right now?

David Thorpe
  (12:16 PM)

Not including my students, I'd lean to Nash, Ray Allen, Kobe, Harpring.

Nick (NYC)

Do you think the Knicks are better off tanking for a chance at Blake Griffin or making the playoffs for the right to be embarrassed by Boston and Starbury?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Playoffs baby.

Mo (Jersey)

Brook Lopez = poor man's duncan?

David Thorpe
  (12:17 PM)

Could very well be.

Rob (Montreal)

No SKY HOOK? UNSTOPPABLE!!!

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Too obvious, but as a diehard Lakers fan growing up, nothing made me smile more than a post feed to Cap on the right block.

Thomas (Clearwater)

Have you seen much tape of Ricky Rubio?

David Thorpe
  (12:18 PM)

Some. Looks to be #2 this year.

Mike (Cleveland)

A movie you should start quoting is True Lies. Arnolds best other than Commando and Total Recall. Any way, why did Tyler rip on us Clevelanders? What did we do? What makes us so "low class?" Predictions for Cavs Celts on Friday? And I think one thing that makes the Cavs better this year is that they care about each other. Who do you think has better team chemistry, Cavs or Celts?

David Thorpe
  (12:19 PM)

I did months ago with "oh yea, oh yea". Where were you then? Good point about the Cavs chemistry.

Sean

What does Durant need to improve on, limiting turnovers and forcing players to shoot over him?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

I'd like to see him make more plays in the paint.

Lou (Dallas, TX)

Gooden to the Spurs = Championship. Yes, or no?

David Thorpe
  (12:20 PM)

if he agrees to play a role, he could be a difference maker. A big one.

Tom (Cleveland)

Flip side question: what are your worst five go-to moves in the NBA today (i.e. moves that a current player uses regularly despite the fact that they don't work). Lebron's patented "dribble off the shot clock for 20 seconds and hoist a fadeaway three over the double team" comes to mind...

David Thorpe
  (12:21 PM)

I'm not fond of the Spencer Hawes left handed throw, if that's what you mean.

Michael (Maryland)

Why so much love for the 'paper tiger' Chicago Bulls? If they have 4 guys you're always praising, why do they suck so bad?

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Michael, think about it for a second.........got it?

Lloyd (Chicago)

Hey Thorpe, as someone who watches every Bulls game I am curious how Noah can be considered under-rated? He constantly gets pushed around and out muscled for rebounds. The one thing he can do is get a had on the ball and try to tap it back. He is a good passer but still is out of position all the time on offense and defense. Am I missing something??

David Thorpe
  (12:22 PM)

Yes. Can someone send me Noah's rebound rate, and where he ranks in the league?

David (Columbia SC)

The utah jazz are the hottest team in the NBA do you think they can beat the lakers or spurs in a playoffs series. And who do think is better Deron Williams or Tony Parker

David Thorpe
  (12:23 PM)

Probably not going to happen, but of course it could. Both guys are better suited for their team.

Travis (DC)

Who has a worse bias: You towards the players you coach, or Simmons towards Boston teams??

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

What's funny is that the agents for the players I teach always remind me to be nicer to their guys. I love all my students, but if I'm not objective with them then I'm not helping them.

Mart(Sacramento)

Noah is 19th on overall rebound rate and 5th on offensive.

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

Hmmmm.

John(seattle)

14.9 rebounds per 48...good for 11th in the league

David Thorpe
  (12:25 PM)

For a 2nd year guy who is probably better served to be a pf, not bad.

Jason (IA)

What percent chance do you give for this era to be remembered as the "Durant" era instead of the "LeBron" era?

David Thorpe
  (12:26 PM)

0.

Nick (Cleveland)

As per Noah, please. I hate when people use the rebound rate, or any stat per 48 minutes. I think that stat is so overrate. That is like saying if J.J. Hickson played 48 minutes he'd average 13 RPG. Well guess what, there is a reason these guys only play 22-24 minutes a game (In Noah's case). I don't know how anyone could consider Noah under-rated and you got owned by a Bulls fan who watches every single game.

David Thorpe
  (12:27 PM)

I'll not defend Noah further, but I will defend the stats. You are suggesting that coaches always play the better players more than the other guys. You really think that is the case?

Raptor Nation

Hi David, Talk us off the ledge.. What is the best case scenario for the Raptors over the next year and a half?

David Thorpe
  (12:28 PM)

pressing the reset button-after doing a sign and trade with Bosh and getting a whole heap of young guys and draft picks.

Shaq

David, you are the Rupaul of trainers.

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

Shaq you very much.

Chris (Kalamazoo, Michigan)

Would it kill you to say something about the Pistons?

David Thorpe
  (12:29 PM)

it would not. Let's see-Denver is better without AI. Pistons too. Do the math.

Washington (Arizona)

What coach do you think would be right for the Bulls?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

D'Antoni.

MoNgO (Cleveland)

What do ya think - Free the Crab! Lebron's famous crab dribble sure seems legal based on what MJ did and what KB do on a regular basis - what do you think?

David Thorpe
  (12:30 PM)

The crab dribble is legit. What LBJ did is traveling. he crabbed, then took a step.

Paul (Cleveland)

Per 48 min Anderson Verajao averages 12 reb, and he is shooting 52+%, AND he is a turnover causing machine, he has GOT to be in the top 5 underrated players. He is the glue for the cavs D, period.

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

I'm a huge, huge fan.

Ryan (LA)

If you're the Lakers, you will probably need to choose between Lamar and Ariza this summer. Who do you take?

David Thorpe
  (12:31 PM)

I'll decide in June.

Sokol Las Vegas, NM

Who would you put on your all time tough guy list? I like Harpring, Malone, Van Lier, Stockton, Sloan and off the bench Millsap...Yes, I see I put alot of Jazz players any list you could come up with? Top Five Tough Guys?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Haslem, Evans, Artest, Harpring, Truck Robinson.

Crab

We perfer to call it scuttling.

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Thanks for that!

Coop (Orlando)

Do you think the Magic have any chance at the Eastern Conference Finals this year?

David Thorpe
  (12:32 PM)

Not much of one now, but still a chance.

John (Chicago, IL)

Noah's rebound/48 minute rate is 14.9 -- that ranks 17th in the NBA. But if you go simply by that stat than Marcin Gortat (17.9 boards/48 minutes -- 4th in NBA) is WAY more underrated (and better) than Noah. FYI, Aaron Gray is right behind Noah on this list, at 14.7 boards/48 minutes. Does that mean Gray is underrated, too?

David Thorpe
  (12:34 PM)

C'mon guys, it's so simple. I answered a question about Noah's rebounding. And a different question about underrated. There's a lot more reasons I think he's underrated than just his board numbers. It's like a chat version of telephone line in here.

Terry (Madison)

What should I get for lunch?

David Thorpe
  (12:36 PM)

Spinach salad with Basalmic and grilled chicken and red peppers. A whole orange. Some fresh Florida strawberries. And pomegranite tea, iced.

Colin (Detroit)

Laimber and Mahorn would each take Haslem behind a shed and whoop his butt.

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

I met and exchanged emails with Mahorn the other day. Great guy!! And for the record, when I asked him who in this league could have played on his team in Detroit, Haslem was one of his picks.

Dan (Buffalo, NY)

Thorpedo, Joe Smith > Mikki Moore and Marbury. Right?

David Thorpe
  (12:37 PM)

Right.

Dyami, Los Angeles

After watching D Rose lead my Bulls to a 4th quarter come back and a win, what is Del Negro thinking when he benches him in the 4th. Do you think that will also hurt him in the R.O.Y voting?

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

That comeback was mostly due to a total Artest meltdown. But no, he's still a strong ROY candidate.

Enrique, Zaragoza, Spain

wich of those deserves more the HOF? Bernard King, Artis Gilmore,

David Thorpe
  (12:38 PM)

King.

Eugene (LA)

Hey Thorpe! Place these centers in order of which you would draft them based on what you've seen and their potential. Bynum, Bogut, Okafor, Lopez.

David Thorpe
  (12:39 PM)

4. Bynum 3. Okafor 2. Bogut 1. Lopez Injuries were part of my thinking on this.

B-Kune (NYC)

How can you have an all-time tough guys list without Oakley and Buck Williams?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

I'll conduct a re-vote next week.

Ryan Russillo (ESPN)

Why am I the only ESPN employee who talks about Lebron faking injuries like a soccer player?

David Thorpe
  (12:40 PM)

FYI-Ryen spells his name with an "e".

Chris (OKC)

A couple of weeks ago I unfairly received a lifetime ban. I was wondering when would I be allowed to ask a question again?

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

You just did.

Jeff (Philippines)

Hey David. Who's your top 5 MVP right now? Salamat(Thanks)!

David Thorpe
  (12:41 PM)

3. Kobe 2. Wade 1.LBJ And nothing has been decided yet.

Marc, Charlotte

Come on Mr. Thorpe, I've been asking the same question in multiple ways for 30 minutes (at least I'm not copying and pasting the same thing over and over again). What are your thoughts on the Bobcats playoff chances?

David Thorpe
  (12:42 PM)

Sorry Marc, there are 900 questions in this chat as of now. In think they have a shot-I've watched them twice recently and am impressed.

Ray San Antonio, TX

Everyone in San Antonio thinks i'm crazy but do you think it is so far fetched to think about trading Tim Duncan now for the future

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

Yes I do.

Mike (Chicago)

Oh man after that lunch idea I'm STARVING. Just kidding. Hey Thorpe, can you elaborate on why Bosh deserves a max deal? I mean, just last night he was stroking jumpers all night. Stroking jumpers is not a bad thing, but don't you want your franchise center to be a bid more of an inside presence?

David Thorpe
  (12:43 PM)

First of all, he's not a center. And I'm sure his spirit is gone.

adam

what percent chance do you give of lamarcus aldridge becomes the star of portland instead of b-roy?

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

0.

Chris (NY, NY)

David, nice to see you give props to Bernard King. He was one to the most unstoppable offesive player ever in his Knick days when Hubie called his name everytime down the court and they had nothing around him

David Thorpe
  (12:44 PM)

Bernie on the left wing was a force of nature.

Steve (Detroit, MI)

Dave, if the Pistons continue to play like them old selves, and add Bosh this summer, can they be right back on the top next season?

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

I think so.

Binh (Vancouver)

Guys like Noah and Varejao do nothing but help a team win. Cut from the same cloth, I would say. Awkward offensively but so useful from a hustle, energy, defensive, and rebounding standpoint. I got nuts when people (the Internets) dog them just because they're not offensive players.

David Thorpe
  (12:45 PM)

Since when is passing not an offensive skill?

Jim (the 'Ham)

How good is Al Horford? 10 and 10 guy for the rest of his career? Or does he have a legitimate shot at being more effective than Durant will be?

David Thorpe
  (12:46 PM)

I think he can be a 15+ and 10+ guy, but he's not in KD's league. Few are.

Dave (Vancouver, BC)

Is Bargnani beginning to make Bosh expendable?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

Not remotely.

ryan(NJ)

ugh. Horford and Durant couldn't be more different players. Horford definitely has 18 and 15 all-star caliber upside. By why go there with Durant?

David Thorpe
  (12:47 PM)

I thought the question asked me to compare him to KD. Did it not?

Joel (philly via youngstown)

KIRBY! Did Danny Ainge drop the ball by not waiting to see what deveoped with Joe Smith? I mean, Mikki Moore is decomposing before our very eyes. His impatience is even worse now that Smith fills a gaping hole for the Cavs after the Wallace injury.

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

I missed the Kirby line-aweome stuff. Ainge could not have known what would go down.

Cody (Houston, TX)

What do you thing about Rockets chances in Playoffs? They have looked great as of late and have Battier and Ron Ron to stop the opposing teams best player. Can we rely on Aaron Brooks as point guard?

David Thorpe
  (12:48 PM)

The bigger question is, can you rely on Ron Ron?

ryan(NJ)

my comment was directed at the person askign the question. Your response was dead on.

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

Ok, good. Thanks.

Joe (Columbus)

David, I spent about an hour convincing myself that Joe Smith was a better fit for the Cavs (mid range jumpers, better teamate, able to defend 5's) than Drew Gooden (fallout with LBJ, needs to be on the floor more to impact the game) Am I crazy?

David Thorpe
  (12:49 PM)

For that and other reasons, I like where each player ended up.

Jon (Charlotte, NC)

Its pretty comical that Troy Murphy has done a better job of leading his team than Chris Bosh has, no?

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

No. But Murph is tearing it up now.

ryan(NJ)

while i have your attention, do you think Luther Head will help Miami? Taking Quinn's minutes away and hittign a few open 3's seems to be what they need.

David Thorpe
  (12:50 PM)

Zzzzzz...

Robert, Huntington WV [via mobile]

I'm tired of hearing guys like Stephen A. Smith say LeBron is the best player in the NBA. Kobe is clearly the best in the league.

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

He's not alone, Bobby.

Terry Sowada ,Clearwater, Fl

How long before Calathis hits the NBA?

David Thorpe
  (12:51 PM)

What's up neighbor!! 4 months, I'd say.

Mike (Cavs town)

What would be a better duo; Bosh and Wade, or Bosh and LBJ?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

Does it matter?

Dan (Buffalo, NY)

Thorpedo, The Grant Project that I work for is up in September and we just found out we will not be getting re-funded. Can I come work for you?

David Thorpe
  (12:52 PM)

I'm looking for a fast typer. What are your credentials?

Mark(NYC)

Wanna guess who's currently the worst free thrower in the league? It's Josh Smith with 55%. What's wrong with him?

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

I'd guess lack of focus, for one.

Lee (Fargo)

Love the insight. I was wondering if a team can productively run an offense with two combo guards who share point guard duties. Does a team NEED a true pg if both guards are decent.

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

No, not at all.

Jenna - Tempe

Hey Dave - Your thoughts on Lou Amundsen's hustle? (Actually - Lou just wanted me to get his name in one of your chats)

David Thorpe
  (12:53 PM)

Oops, he's one of my faves. Seriously. I love that guy.

Tim (ChiTown)

Will Luol Deng and Vinny be a part of the Bulls starting the season next year?

David Thorpe
  (12:54 PM)

I wouldn't be surprised if one or the other was not there.

James (NY)

Thorpedo - what's with all the Bargnani hate? The guy can really play.

David Thorpe
  (12:55 PM)

Indeed he can. Are you suggesting he's in Bosh's league?

teddy

Faves??? Are you 12?

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

Teddy, just FYI-I try to answer lots of questions in the hour allotted. So I tend to use as many shortcuts as possible, and still seem reasonably smart. Comprende?

Craig (PA)

Josh Smith is only playing poorly because the other Josh (Childress) is missing. Their basketball powers are like the wonder twins...Form of....a free-throw shooter!

David Thorpe
  (12:56 PM)

Shape of...a bricklayer.

Skein (Devils Eyebrows SD)

Tough guy list without Maurice Lucas???

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

Great call.

Jason (Madison)

David...impressed with the Bucks? Any chance Scott can win the coach of the year?

David Thorpe
  (12:57 PM)

I am impressed. But I don't think he can win it.

Cory (San Antonio, TX)

Is Gooden healthy enough to go the distance? Last I heard he could need surgery.

David Thorpe
  (12:58 PM)

I honestly do not know.

derek(medina,oh) [via mobile]

does joe smith give the cavs the edge over boston since he was especially such a troublemaker against the c's in last years playoffs?

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

i honestly think he can be the key addition to make a special play to win a game or series.

James (NY)

Thorpedo, I've got an answer for you, or are you too scared to post it? No, but at half the cost, and with quite a bit more seasoning left until he reaches his peak, I think he may be a better long-term piece. Plus, Bargnani can actually mix it up a bit down low. Bosh gets shoved around so easily it's pathetic.

David Thorpe
  (12:59 PM)

James, it is you that should be scared. The name Bosh and pathetic do not mix.

Mike (NYC)

What do you think of Russell Westbrook's. Is he be better than Rose and Mayo?

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

He could be...

Alex (Orlando, FL)

Courtney Lee is the Magic's current and future starter at the 2. This isn't a question, it's the truth.

David Thorpe
  (1:00 PM)

Maybe.

The Wolf: (LA)

Teddy, If David is curt with you it's because time is a factor. He thinks fast, he talks fast...

David Thorpe
  (1:01 PM)

but eats slowly.

Phil (LA)

Excellent chat once again...

David Thorpe
  (1:01 PM)

Thanks Phil, and to all of you. Almost 1300 questions. You guys are the best. See everyone next week-be safe!!
