Chat with Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (11:54 AM)

Hey everyone. Excited to get started here, so let's kick this chat off a bit early. Gettyup!

chalres fort myers [via mobile]

what are the eagles doing they lost dawkins ltio etc and we have got wideout or anything really in return expect for the o

Matt Williamson
  (11:56 AM)

Yeah, shocks me. I really like the Andrews signing-assuming he is healthy. But..Philly is a worse team today than they were when the season ended. Losing Dawkins was the shocker. I REALLY expected Philly to be a heavy win-now mode and letting him leave doesn't really hold true, esp considering the complexity and aggressiveness of J Johnson's D. Need stability at FS. Now what? Not sold on Demps. Losing Lito didn't break my heart, as I think they have three suitable players at CB-but use that $$$ to help your team!

eric kck

everyone is saying curry to kc but is there any chance of them taking crabtree or maclin with cassel and haley

Matt Williamson
  (11:58 AM)

Would STRONGLY consider Crabtree. I like Maclin, but he is too raw to take that high. To me, the pick is Crabtree or Curry. Safe. Think where Pioli came from. Not big time risk takers in NEng and that O has carried the Pats for a while now. What a group of pass catchers they would have if they grabbed Crabtree and in all reality, they would be very close to done rebuilding that O. Of course the OL needs more help, but one way to really help the OL is to force teams to cover your receivers with more defenders than they want.

Dave (Pittsburgh)

What sort of a compensatory pick can the Steelers expect for the loss of Nate Washington?

Matt Williamson
  (11:59 AM)

Comp picks happen a year after. For example, the Steelers will get comp picks this year for the free agents that they lost one year ago-like Faneca. Would expect PGH to be well compensated.

John (Cincinnati)

Hi Matt...what do you think the Cassel trade will do to other offseason trades? If they only gave up a second round pick for Cassel, will any other team trade a 1 and a 3 for a WR (Boldin, Edwards, etc..)? Thanks.

Matt Williamson
  (12:01 PM)

Don't underestimate just how valuable that specific #2 draft pick is. VERY early 2nd rounder-gold Jerry, gold. Don't have to pay first round money and that rookie doesn't kill your cap. NEng has three 2nd rounders now! That is serious fire power. Still, if I were Phil, NYG, or Minny, I would probably offer up a first rounder for a top flight WR. This is esp true for NYG. They are one player away from being an exceptional football team.

Eli (Export, PA)

do you agree with other articles and overall sentiments that ray lewis has some major egg on his face over the way he's handled his free agency situation?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

Not over yet and no one will care come opening day-including and most importantly, his teammates. I said before free agency opened that some LBs out there were going to be dissappointed with the cash they demanded. It surely didn't help that he is strictly an ILB and doesn't have a lot of position versatility. Obviously his age has been a deterant as well.

mojo (Castle Rock)

Leinhart can't be thrilled about Warner coming back. Is he ready to be a starter? What's his upside?

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

I might be in the minority, but I am not ready to throw Leinhart to the scrap heap yet. Still, resigning Warner was an absolute must for Zona. Did it go through officially yet? Haven't heard. But, back to Leinhart. First off, there is no shame in not being able to beat out Warner for the starting job. Warner is awfully good. Throws a very catchable ball, but doesn't have a real big arm or overwhelming physical tools. QBs like that have to have a great grasp of reading Ds and their specific O. That takes time and he is now on yet another OCoordinator, so that has to have slowed that process a bit as well. Still, would like to see more from him-but I bet some teams would be interested if Zona dangled him out there.

Brian (Michigan)

Would you trade the #1 and #20 picks for a Jay Cutler/Calvin Johnson connection?

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

Probably not both picks, but I would give that first overall. Would have some slight concerns about Cutler as the face of the franchise considering his immaturity issues that seem to have really come to light, but still, the guy can play the game. Not sure we can say that about M Stafford. Minny and TBay should be breaking down the Broncos' door as well. What a mess they have on their hands in Denver!

Craig (PA)

What do you think about the Raiders recent moves to shore up their offensive line? Do you see them trying to draft some more OL help or hoping Crabtree falls to 7?

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

The moves to sure up their OL? You mean letting Jake Grove leave? Can't say they are any better up front now than they were at the end of the season. However, it is certainly a good thing that K Harris will not be back-you talk about a terrible football player. Anyways, I am with you. At #7, if they do not go WR or OT, I will be extremely critical of the pick-as I was of the McFadden selection.

Yatin (LA)

If the Eagles sign Springs as expected, will he play Safety, or will he play DB and they move Sheldon to Safety?

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

If that does happen, then erase some of my earlier comments about Philly. Would be a big fan of that signing and prob would prefer to see Springs as the FS. Instead of changing two starting positions, just switch the one. Would actually be more athletic at FS with Springs over Dawkins.

Kyle (Philly)

What would the eagles have to give draft picks wise to get boldin?

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

Who knows what to believe with the whole Zona/Boldin/Warner fiasco right now, but if they are interested in moving Boldin, I would think one of the Eagles' first rounders would get the job done. Zona will want a package similiar to what Dallas gave up for Roy Williams, but that was a bit steep in my opinion. However, if NYG and Philly or other teams start to compete for his services....who knows.

zack(wa)

Who has done the best job working the FA with their team?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

Pretty fond of what NYG has done. Just collect DLinemen. Love it. Those guys are serious commodities. Could go and trade Kiwanuka for Boldin or Edwards in some kind of package if need be or better yet, just keep bring new big time DLinemen into the game and attacking all game long. Makes a ton of problems go away.

Broncos4ever (Denver)

If LaMont Jordan does sign in Denver, does that mean they won't take a back in the draft?

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

Who knows. That team just keeps collecting C Level free agents. Really can only keep three (maybe four) RBs on the roster, so something has to give. Throwing a lot of stuff at a fan in Denver and seeing what sticks. Will certainly create competition, but these guys are not long term answers at all.

Wayne (St. Louis)

Matt, what do you think the Rams will do at # 2? Jason Brown helps the o-line. Seems like they could go for Crabtree, Curry, or one of the o-lineman now.

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

Agreed. A lot has to do with Pace and Holt. Obviously neither is a long term answer, but if they move only one, I would probably lean towards taking that position (Crabtree or Smith) over the other. Still, can't go too wrong with any of those three you mentioned. I think you nailed it.

Adam Tampa

how do you think derrick ward will do in the bucs new zone blocking scheme, and should we look for the bucs to sadly release the caddy?

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

Can't trust the Caddy. Shame for sure. Just wrote a blog on Ward to TBay-check it out. I really liked the move. They have the makings of a great OL-which I think Ward needs more than most RBs. But he will hit it up in there. No question about that. Plus, his ability in the passing game is huge as well.

RJ (Boston)

Who are the main suitors for JJ Arrington?

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

Was blown away by him going to Denver right as free agency opened. Now, he apparently is not. Still, he is a dime a dozen guy. Good return skills and a bit of a weapon as a receiver, but overall, he isn't anyone to get excited about. RBs are everywhere.

Yatin (LA)

Not exactly a scouting question, but why did JJ Arrington's contract get voided by the league?

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

Good follow up. I have no idea. Can anyone help out?

trevor (reno, nv)

the bucs are not going to be even close to competeing for that divison this year

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

Really dislike their QB situation. The D looks like it will be worse. O Skill positions will be better-no question...but also so volitle. A Bryant and K2? Talk about guys who can be disruptive when times are bad. Yikes. TBay still has a ton of cap room, but what can/will they do with it?

Majeed

M-Dub, Did Miami spend too much on Grove? What about a JT reunion?

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

Would shock me if JT returned. Not exactly a Parcells type of guy. Could see NEng being interested in him, but also not really a BB kind of guy. GBay? Den? Some 3-4 team makes the most sense. Did Miami overpay? Maybe, but that is what gets it done in this market. Just look at how much $$$ that Miami has tied up in their OL-amazing. Pretty clear what they think is the key to winning in this league.

Gray (Chicago)

2005 NFL Draft: Alex Smith, Ronnie Brown, Braylon Edwards, Ced Benson, Cadillac Williams, Pacman Jones, Troy Williamson, Antrel Rolle, Carlos Rogers, Mike Williams - worst Top 10 ever?

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

It has to be! Not ready to completely write off A Smith, but still-they guy has done nothing. Awful top 10.

Sam (State College, PA)

If Brian McFadden signs with the Arizona Cardinals, what impact, if any, do you see it having on the Steelers secondary?

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

If that happens, I expect PGH to draft a CB rather high who also has strong return skills. I think PGH is well prepared, but if McF wanted back at a reasonable price, I am sure they would be quite interested. Good player.

Jake (Peoria,IL)

What are the Bears doing? One signing and no word of any others. They need help in so many areas what is Angelo thinking?

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

I do understand not being overly aggressive in this crazy market, but they had better do something reasonably quick. They do need help in many areas. Agreed.

Justin (Queens, NY)

Who should the Jets look to grab in the draft? They have need at QB, WR and DLine but the draft looks weak at QB. Who whould make the biggest impact?

Matt Williamson
  (12:26 PM)

Sanchez would be a home run-unilikey he is there, but sometimes QBs fall. T Jackson makes sense as a 3-4 DE, but WR is probably the pick. Heyward Bey would be a great get.

bud (baltimore, maryland)

what do you think of the ravens' move thus far, as well as potential ones? do you think ray-ray will return? and how hard are they pursuing matt birk, Vikings C?

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

Sounds like Birk will annouce today if he stays in Minny or goes to Balt. The Ravens could sure use him. Crucial position for them. I like what they have done and I do think Lewis returns. If they get Birk, they are in decent shape all things considered. Gooden could be fine in Scott's spot. Foxworth is good enough. If they land Lewis and Birk, then this team really didn't go backwards-which would be a major accomplishment considering their free agency situation. Could still cut Heap or McGahee to make room. Draft a pass catcher or two.

Dan (Buffalo, NY)

MW, any chance the Browns trade Braylon and draft Crabtree? I know they need A LOT of help on the defensive side, but they picked up an extra second for KW2 and would get at least two picks for Edwards. Thoughts?

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

Surely could happen. Just think of that WR situation without Braylon! Yikes, what a mess. Who is catching passes in Clev if he is gone. Better question-who is dropping them? Still, need to give Quinn some options. That team needs quite a bit though, esp if/when Edwards leaves. Can't say that I am real impressed with Mangini.

Connin (Myrtle Beach)

Matt, What's the hold up with #52 going back to Bmore. Obviously no one else is knocking down his door with an 8 mil/yr deal. Also, if by chance to Ravens sign Birk can they still go get a WR that can get down field for Flacco(Coles?)

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

I would bet pride is interfering, but who is say for sure. Seems like that needs to get done and 52 is more important/valuable to Balt than to any other franchise. Doubt they could swing Birk, Lewis and Coles. WR/TE might have to come on DDay...but it is a real good draft for both positions.

Erik (Forked River)

Any chance Crabtree falls to SF at #10? If not, what do you see the niners doing at that pick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

I know Crabtree is injured. Very similiar injury to what J Stewart had last year from what I understand. Didn't hurt Stewart's draft stock. I think Crabtree's stock is at the lowest point that it will ever drop to right now-assuming the medical is acceptable that is. No way he drops to SF. So many teams could use him. And honestly, how many of these top notch prospects get you real excited? I still think Crabtree is the best prospect in this draft. 1. Crabtree 2. Curry 3. Sanchez 4. J Smith

Mitch (NC)

Do you see the Panthers trading Peppers for draft picks, another player, or keeping him on the roster this year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

Such a massive cap hit to keep him-and then you have to deal with all this drama for another year and maybe franchise him yet again a year from now. Still, the offer has to be right and DE would be a massive need for the Panthers without Peppers. NEng surely could make it interesting though.

Pete (NJ)

With Dallas trading away Henry, isn't their secondary dangerously thin? What does Dallas plan on doing to address this?

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

& Roy Williams is on his way out. They must like the two rookie CBs from last year-and from what I saw, I can buy that to put them opposite Newman. Can also live with Hamlin and Watkins, but overall, yes, at least one more DB, S more than CB, is needed. They don't have a first rounder, but they still can get a guy on DDay. But I feel ya. Also, that pass rush can make some secondary issues go away.

Jared (Denver CO)

Matt W My man!! You Rule and never abondon your chatters! How does J Smith compare to my man Clady? Thanks brother.

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

Good comparison. Light on his feet. Athlete. Fluid. Clady seems like the better run blocker though. Smith really needs to prove to me that he can move NFL DEs in the run game. Still, he certainly has the tools to do so and those pass pro skills are awfully impressive.

Courtney (NC)

do you think the redskins will go after peppers ..or have enough money to ?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

How could they possibly have enough $$$ to do that? Can't say that I know the cap inside and out, but wow, I can't see that working out.

Newport R.I

I was wondering since the colts don't explore free agency, how can they improve their defense within the draft?

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

I don't have a major problem with that D anywhere except DT. Finding DTs is tough biz though. Should be able to add one in the top two rounds, but will he be an immediate difference maker? Debatable. Don't be surprised if they go WR in round 1 though. Indy will always be built to score points.

Jon (Detroit)

Is Stafford a franchise quarterback?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

I have my doubts. Great physical abilities. Questionable accuracy. Can he put his team on his back? Wasn't Georgia the preseason #1 team before last year? A lot of risk with that guy in my option. Also a lot of potential reward though-no doubt.

Anthony (New York)

Hey Matt who do you see fiting in good with the Giants Miles Austin,Marvin Harrison?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

Blah. They need to do better than that.

Sixsmith (Williamsburg Park)

Gimme some draft sleepers. W-Burg Park rules

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

Hmmm...it does indeed by the way. How about AQ Shipley-tough guy OC from Penn State. Will be a long time starter in this league. No doubt in my mind. Along the PSU lines, keep an eye on Derrick Williams. Guy's stock has fallen through the floor. Poor 40 at the Combine. Supposedly he was under the weather though. Could be a third round steal.

Jeremy (Oakland)

Can you name a couple of teams interested in Cal Poly's Ramses Barden and where do you see him going in the draft?

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

Big body. Impressive to look at. Good hands. Would like to see him play huge. Doesn't bend or explode out of his breaks all that well. Looks like a fourth rounder who is worth taking a risk on. Expect very little in year one in the NFL though.

Brian: (Savannah,GA)

Who should be Atlanta's first round pick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

I really think they could go in a lot of ways. I would object if they went DE, DT, OLB or S-although there really isn't a S to get excited about in round one. Could use one more OLinemen as well or a TE like Pettigrew, who would fit their system well. Options.

Ty (Greensboro NC)

With Peppers one year tenure taking up entirely too much cap room, why haven't the Panthers tried to trade him? The team barely has enough money to even sign draft picks!!

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Right. Surely they are on the phones though. Really don't have much choice.

Chris (Broadview Heights, OH)

Is Mangini going to play Shaun Rogers at FB this year in goalline situations? (Assuming Rogers is still with Cleveland).

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

That is some serious beef coming downhill. Those two don't seem to really like one another though.

Jim Tampa

Is Coles ever going to sign??

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Sounds like Cincy might be the leader in the club house. Makes sense. Start him next to 85 with Carson back behind center. Allow the rooks from last year to keep growing up. Draft at least one OLineman-OC and/or OT.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Would Kansas City say no to a Cutler/Cassell trade offer?

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

No idea, but can't see Cutler being traded within the division! Would assume that KC is very happy with their guy.

Doug (NY)

As a Giants fan reading the Braylon rumors, should I be concerned about his propensity to drop passes?

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

Sure. He drops them left and right. Still, capable of great things as well. Would worry about his mouth as well.

Kevin Boston [via mobile]

Its unlikely but if the Patriots did sign peppers but if they did how successful would he be in a 3 4 or would he simply play OLB

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

Would be an OLB. Is certainly talented enough to make the switch. Such a great athlete. Plus, not the toughest guy in the world and would probably prefer to move a few steps away from the middle of the field to play in space more. Any pos switch is dangerous, but worth it for him.

Lonnie (P-Burgh)

How close are the Steelers and Harrison to a new deal?

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

Just read today that his agent was very optimistic. Would be shocked if it didn't get done. PGH has been real quiet. Due for something like that to pop.

Eric (Long Island,NY)

hey matt! you mentioned cincy but not buffalo. are they out of the race?

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

For Coles? No I think they are in it. Both make sense. Buff certainly needs another pass catcher as well...as usual.

Mike Dunn (Williamsburg Park)

Who drops more balls, Braylon or TO?

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Braylon. TO has his drops, no doubt, but I think his reputation look a big hit that season that he played about half of the year with a broken hand. Makes catching passes tough. Braylon was embarrassing last year. Still, it should be noted that these guys have had a lot more passes thrown their way that Joe Average WR.

Dave (Long Island)

Jets improved their defense but not their pass rush... are there any moves to come there? Hard to rely on Ryan fixing whatever is wrong with Gholston, especially with all your talk about the dangers of switchin positions...

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

The pass rush will improve under Ryan. MUCH more aggressive play caller. I thought Mangini really didn't get the most out of the 3-4 last year-way too predictable. That will not be the case any more. The OLBs without Gholston are pretty solid as is and he did have a poor rookie season, but that pos switch takes a little time, he came to camp late and should be much improved in year two. Should be Ryan's pet project. I like the Jets' D. As for the passing attack....ouch.

JP (Dallas, Tx)

What can the Titans expect to get out of Nate Washington next year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

Some wow plays. Deep speed. Incredible ups. Also a lot of drops and inconsistency. Will make you pull your hair out once in a while. I like him and he has consistently improved year after year, but I would really worry as him as a true starter right now. Gage and Washington as the starting WRs? Hmmm

jacob (va beach)

who should kc take with the 2nd rd picks? oh wait they got cassel. damn good trade

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

Indeed

Brett (Houston, TX)

Is Sage Rosenfels a starting QB? Will he start in Minny, and if so, be successful?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

He will start. Best guy they have and for that reason, well worth a fourth round pick. But-a bad fit in Min. They need a guy who doesn't make a lot of mistakes. Hand it to Peterson. Make the throws that are there. Let the D be great and get rested. Rosenfels is not that guy. Gunslinger without gunslinger tools. Too many turnovers.

Sean (Boston)

What should the Patriots do with that new second round draft pick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

Bro, they have four picks on Day One! A WR is not out of the question with one of those picks and I could also see them grabbing a RT somewhat early, but for the most part, NEng is going to rebuild the Back 8 of their D. Such a great franchise.

Brett (Houston, TX)

So did Minny make a bad move getting him? Who should they have targeted?

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

Hard to say that using a fourth round pick to upgrade at QB was a bad move. But, I just don't like his style for them. Cassel certainly would have been FAR more expensive, but he could have made them a great team. Would have offered the Vikes #1 for him. But, you do bring up a good point-not a lot of QB options out there that fit my description for them. Garcia maybe, but not much of a fan of his here-also quite old.

Jeremy (Boston)

Who do you see targeting Donald Brown? He's gonna be a steal for someone. Eagles? Cards?

Matt Williamson
  (1:00 PM)

Agreed that he will be a good NFL RB. Looks like a 2nd rounder to me though. Doubt he lasts until those teams' 2nd round picks...but would fit both teams well. SD if LT leaves? Not a ton of team in need of a RB.

RJ (Pittsburgh)

Ron Brace to the Steelers in the first -- thoughts?

Matt Williamson
  (1:01 PM)

Nope. Need DE more than NT and that is also a bit early for Brace. MANY teams will be interested though, since so many now have went to a 3-4.

Matt Williamson
  (1:02 PM)

Okay everyone. Let's do this again next week. Same time. This was a grin as always. Adios.
